WELCOME! Thank you for choosing to share a part of your holidays with us. This time of year, we focus on the things most important in life: the joy that comes from time spent with loved ones, reflection on the events and experiences we have shared, the anticipation we feel looking forward to the New Year, and making memories that last a lifetime. While The Kentucky Center has faced some challenges this year, we are excited to continue moving forward and staying true to our mission of building lifelong relationships through the arts. This month, in addition to the performances you see in this program guide, The Kentucky Center is brimming with family entertainment, like VOICES of Kentuckiana, the oldest LGBTA arts organization in Kentucky, bringing its new show Red and Green to the Bomhard Theater; singer-songwriter Jim Brickman performing A Joyful Christmas and Angels in Disguise presenting A Country Christmas with Mark Oliverius and special guest Pam Tillis, both at the Brown Theatre; and StageOne Family Theatre’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever having a special run at Louisville’s Memorial Auditorium (970 S. 4th St.). Looking forward to 2019, we are excited to ring in the new year with exciting performances and premieres. Kentucky Center Presents brings thrilling dance performances, including Dorrance Dance, DIAVOLO and Malpaso Dance Company. Kentucky Opera brings Verdi’s masterpiece Rigoletto to life on The Brown Theatre stage. Louisville Ballet partners with Louisville Visual Art for the innovative dance and visual art experience Human Abstract. Louisville Orchestra presents Festival of American Music I: Kentucky Spring, which features dancers from the Louisville Ballet and a new “folk opera” from Louisville native Rachel Grimes. StageOne Family Theatre rounds out its season with Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. Of course, one of the biggest shows to talk about in 2019 is PNC Broadway in Louisville’s production of the cultural phenomenon Hamilton, making its local debut in June! On behalf of our entire Kentucky Center family, thank you for joining us tonight and thank you for your continued support of the performing arts. We look forward to sharing new and exciting arts experiences and making memories together in the months and years to come. Happy holidays and a joyous New Year!

Louder Than Life presents

Sleep With Quintron’s Weather Warlock Tuesday, December 11, 2018 • 8 p.m. • The Brown Theatre

I

t must be gratifying for Sleep to hear the audience roar in approval when guitarist Matt Pike plays the opening notes of Dopesmoker, the live set version coming in around 40 minutes, slimmed down from the studio recording, which clocks in at a little over an hour and three sides. Years after the release of Volume One in 1991, Sleep’s Holy Mountain in 1992 and Dopesmoker in 2003, Matt Pike hard at work with High On Fire and bassist/vocalist Al Cisneros with OM, heavy music needed one of its essential minerals back. In 2009, falling in on either side of Neurosis drummer Jason Roeder, Sleep, like a wooly mammoth awoken from centuries of frozen slumber, once again walked the earth. You could almost hear the universe sigh in relief that Sleep was back. 2014 saw Sleep release a single sided 12” with a new song, “The Clarity,” giving fans a glimpse of what would

hopefully be more to come. And so, the wait began… All good things take time. In April 2018, Sleep fans had a reason to break out their finest and get it lit with the release of the new Sleep album The Sciences. than 20 years, much of it in collaboration with artist/puppeteer Panacea Theriac aka “Miss Pussycat.” In 1999, Quintron helped to foster a DIY analog synth revival with a patented instrument called the DRUM BUDDY, a light-activated analog drum machine which creates murky, low-fidelity, rhythmic patterns. Quintron’s current focus is on a weather-controlled analog drone synthesizer called Weather Warlock and a website devoted to streaming its music called Weather For The Blind (weatherfortheblind.org). Weather Warlock has also spawned a live band consisting of various musicians improvising during sunrise or sunset to the sounds of this instrument doing its thing. Recent collaborators have included Steve Shelly, Sean Ono Lennon, Gary Wrong, Miss Pussycat, Aaron Hill (of Eyehategod), Nels Cline, Rat Bastard, DJ Lespam and several members of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Quintron continues to live and work in New Orleans, Louisiana, as well as touring, teaching and lecturing in this world and beyond.

The Kentucky Center presents

Christmas with the Kory Caudill Quintet featuring Chester Thompson Saturday, December 15, 2018 • 8 p.m. • The Kentucky Center, Bomhard Theater

D

on’t let the “aw-shucks” demeanor of world-class pianist Kory Caudill fool you. The jeans, boots, plaid shirt and University of Kentucky ball cap can be misleading, but his musical prowess is as polished as it is natural. When Kory was just a few years old, his parents were stunned to see him walk to the piano and play the melody to John Williams’ “Theme from Superman” immediately after it aired on television. They knew their child had a gift, and they worked to provide him with every resource available to develop his musical abilities. At the age of four, Caudill began his involvement with the Kentucky Opry at the Mountain Arts Center in Prestonsburg, Kentucky. As the Kentucky Opry’s popularity grew, Kory had not only become a key member of the organization,

but he was the group’s most popular performer. Concertgoers were constantly amazed by his performances, which have been called “touching” and “inspiring” by thousands of patrons. During high school, Caudill was one of eight pianists selected statewide to attend The Kentucky Center Governor’s School For the Arts (2003, Instrumental Music), where he received the school’s top honor. While completing his degree at Belmont University, Kory became the first piano major in the school’s history to perform as one of four

artists in the school’s prestigious Commercial Showcase, which touts past performers such as Brad Paisley and Trisha Yearwood. During Caudill’s final semester, he was requested by the school’s president to be the featured performer at the highly acclaimed “President’s Concert.” Fast forward to 2018, and Kory Caudill has traveled the world and become one of America’s mostsought-after pianists. His fluency in nearly every genre, as well as his highly acclaimed virtuosity, has given him success in multiple facets of the music industry. Whether it be recording and producing projects for artists, touring with country superstar Justin Moore, or selling out concerts of his own, it has become clear that the Caudill is a force to be reckoned with in today’s music industry. Kory constantly created his own brand of music and is now on the verge of a career that looks to bring that music to a worldwide stage. His style is as unique as his abilities, and his knack for connecting with audiences that span every demographic is a sight to behold. His innovative blend of country, rock, jazz, bluegrass and classical music caught the attention of Naxos of America, the No. 1 independent classical music distributor in the U.S. and Canada. The innovative and forward-thinking organization was highly impressed by Kory, which led them to sign him as the flagship artist to their new imprint, Suite 28 records. Since the release of 14

his debut album, Tree of Life, the young artist has celebrated groundbreaking achievements as an instrumentalist. Having now released three albums, Kory has enjoyed topping the iTunes chart in multiple genres, directing and starring in hit music videos, and selling out concerts of his own. Staying true to his ambitious nature, the young artist is set to release three albums across multiple genres in the coming year. He is currently putting the finishing touches on Christmas With Kory Caudill & Friends (Vol. 2), a Jazzy offering of holiday favorites featuring renowned drummer Chester Thompson set for release this fall. The album was recorded live to tape—yes, two-inch tape like the old days—with four microphones and limited overdubs. Whether in front of thousands of people under shining lights or in the intimate setting of a local church, Kory’s kind, humble spirit is always present to compliment his amazing talent. When you experience the music of Kory Caudill, you will be touched. https://korycaudill.com https://www.facebook.com/ Korycaudillpiano/ https://twitter.com/korycaudill https://www.instagram.com/korycaudill/
