WELCOME! Can you feel it? Spring is finally in the air. After this long and tough winter, it can’t get here a minute too soon. As we all emerge from our winter cocoons and enjoy the season, we are so grateful that you chose to join us this evening. As always, there is no shortage of fantastic, live entertainment on our stages. In addition to the performances listed in this magazine, the coming weeks are filled with amazing events including Louisville Orchestra’s performances of Teddy Talks Brahms, Beethoven’s 9th and Storm Large: Love, Lust + Rock ‘N’ Roll, the Louisville Ballet’s Cinderella, StageOne Family Theatre’s The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, the Louisville debut of America’s Got Talent champion comedian Preacher Lawson, the triumphant return of The Paul Thorn Band and, of course, the Broadway event of the season, Hamilton. Soon, The Kentucky Center will add a new stage to our family of venues with the opening of Old Forester’s Paristown Hall, our new 2,000 person standing room venue in Louisville’s historic Paristown neighborhood. In addition to attracting new national touring bands, this will provide a home for collaborative projects, new works and nontraditional performance experiences by the region’s arts and cultural community. There will be a lot of new information about the new venue in the coming months, so I encourage you to follow The Kentucky Center on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and join our free e-club at kentuckycenter.org, to make sure you receive updates. Of course, what is happening on our stages on our stages is only part of what The Kentucky Center and Brown Theatre have to offer. Looking outside the buildings, The Kentucky Center’s access and education programs connect with teachers and students throughout the Commonwealth, helping bring the arts into classrooms in all 120 Kentucky counties. Soon, The Kentucky Center Governor’s School for the Arts will begin its summer program, where more than 250 of Kentucky’s finest young artists will be guided through three weeks of intense and rewarding arts instruction. This amazing program creates opportunities well beyond the summer. On behalf of The Kentucky Center, I thank you for being here. Every time you come to one of our shows, not only are you able to enjoy unparalleled entertainment, you are also helping our mission to bring the transformative power of the arts to all.

Who’s Who Greg Proops Greg Proops is a stand-up comic from San Francisco. He lives in Hollywood. It’s not that bad. Really. The Proopdog is best known for his unpredictable appearances on Whose Line Is It Anyway?, both in the U.S. and UK. The show is starting its 6th season on the CW. Professor Proops has a hit podcast called The Smartest Man in the World. He records it live in Australia, New Zealand, Montreal, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, San Francisco, Austin, London, Paris, aboard a ship in the Caribbean and, somehow, Cleveland. Find it at Proopcast.com Mr. Proops’ book The Smartest Book in the World is based on his awardseeking podcast. He did a podcast and signing at Shakespeare and Co. in Paris. Visit it at smartestbookintheworld.com. Greg has lent his voice to Hell and Back, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and he really was Bob the Builder. Gregory is doing a West End run of Whose Line Is It Anyway? this summer at the Palladium Theatre in London. Last summer they played the Adelphi Theatre. Proople Rain is a frequent guest on @midnight on Comedy Central. You may socially network with Greg on Twitter at @gregproops. Jeff B. Davis Jeff B. Davis is an actor and comedian, born and bred in Southern California. His career began at age 4 as “Linus” in a terribly ill-advised, all-children production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown at the Groundlings Theater in Hollywood. At age nine he was cast as “Louis” in Yul Brynner’s final production of The King and I, which toured nationally and closed
on Broadway when Jeff was 11, after nearly 800 performances. In high school Jeff began improvising with Los Angeles ComedySportz, where he learned the skills he would later need as a frequent guest on the television show Whose Line Is It Anyway? Jeff has a long list of TV credits, including Steven Martin’s NBC comedy The Downer Channel, WB’s On the Spot, NBC’s Happy Family, The Sarah Silverman Show, Drew Carey’s Green Screen Show and Improvaganza, to name a few. Jeff spends many nights of the year performing live with Whose Live Anyway? with Ryan Stiles, Greg Proops, Chip Esten and Joel Murray to standing ovations all over North America. When he’s not on stage, Jeff is in Hollywood trying to break George Clooney’s record of “most failed television pilots.” Jeff is currently a recurring guest on CW’ss reboot of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, and can be heard on the highly-acclaimed, deeply weird Harmontown podcast with NBC’s Community creator Dan Harmon. Listen at your own risk Feel free to bother Jeff on Twitter at @JeffBryanDavis. Dave Foley Dave Foley co-founded the comedy troupe Kids in the Hall in 1984, and in 1989, a self-titled show reached American television audiences on HBO. By the end of its run in 1994, The Kids in the Hall played on CBS primetime and enjoyed frequent reruns on Comedy Central. In 1995, Foley landed a starring role on TV’s NewsRadio and went on to both TV and film acting after the show’s long run. You can follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveSFoley.

The Kentucky Center and Live Nation present
Sebastian Maniscalco: Stay Hungry Tour Saturday, April 20, 2019 • 7 p.m. • The Brown Theatre
L
et’s face it: In our increasingly tepid, polite and politically correct culture, we need more people like Sebastian Maniscalco. Forever able to seize the moment, never failing to speak his mind, always telling it like it is, this is one man who isn’t afraid to put it all out there. Yes, the Chicago-area born, Italian-immigrantraised comedian behind wildly successful network specials including last year’s Sebastian Maniscalco: Why Would You Do That?, What’s Wrong With People?, and Aren’t You Embarrassed? is that little voice within all our heads. The one we are too timid to unleash. Maniscalco is bearing the burden of our bizarre and head24
scratching modern-day world. You can thank him later. Make no mistake: Maniscalco’s is a meticulous, hard-won comedic point of view. “Every night you’re getting up there and doing something new,” says the comedian, who now has hordes of fans pouring into venues across North America to witness his outsize, highly physical brand of comedy. That’s when he’s not appearing on Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, or making return visits to late-night shows like The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers and CONAN. “It’s just working out a muscle, man,” he says of maintaining his comedic
A U D I E N C E
chops. “You don’t become a bodybuilder the first day you start lifting weights. You gotta work each muscle. Same thing with comedy. You gotta flesh out your joke, your bit. You add and subtract. You see what works.” Distinguished by the The New York Times as having his “own kind of panache,” Maniscalco is a success story resulting from years of hard work and a keen selfawareness of innate talent. A natural-born storyteller, one constantly regaling his family with madcap tales at the dinner table, Maniscalco moved to Los Angeles in 1998 and began pounding the pavement on his comedic quest. The tireless worker first made his name at the city’s famed Comedy Store where he performed at every opportunity—even if that meant rushing over to the club on a break from his waiter job at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. “I felt if I missed an opportunity to be onstage I missed an opportunity to somebody being in the audience and seeing me.” His persistence paid off: then-massive comic Andrew Dice Clay saw him onstage one night and took a young Maniscalco out on the road with him. But not until Vince Vaughan
enlisted him for his popular Wild West Comedy Show did his career begin to explode. Says Maniscalco: “From there things started to snowball.” It’s quite the understatement: Maniscalco now sits as one of the premier standup comedians. And a multi-faceted one at that: Following a massive standup tour of theaters, the 2016 Just for Laughs Stand Up Comedian of the Year enjoyed a number of monumental recent events. In addition to starring in his own wildly popular SiriusXM program, The Pete and Sebastian Show, his major motion picture portfolio has expanded to include a voice-over for character Johnny the Groundhog in the animated feature Nut Job 2, a role in the New Line feature comedy The House starring Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler, and a role in TAG, starring alongside Ed Helms and Jeremy Renner. Throughout 2019, Sebastian continues to tour North America on his Stay Hungry tour, named after his inspiring, uproarious collection of essays that hit shelves in 2018 from publisher Simon & Schuster (Gallery Books). Still, for Maniscalco, the work continues. Says the comedian, “There’s a voice always in the back of my head saying, ‘Don’t rest!’”
