LEWIS BLACK-ALIVE IN CONCERT! Thursday, October 3, 2019 8:00pm • The Brown Theatre

LEWIS BLACK, Grammy Award-winning,

stand-up comedian, is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. He executes a brilliant trifecta as a stand-up comedian, actor and author. Receiving critical acclaim, he performs

8

more than 200 nights annually, to sold-out audiences throughout Europe, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. He is one of a few performers to sell out multiple renowned theaters, including

A U D I E N C E

Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooks Atkinson Theatre, New York City Center, the Main Stage at the Mirage in Las Vegas and most recently, a sold-out Broadway run at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City. His live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. He is a passionate performer who is more pissed-off optimist than mean-spirited curmudgeon. Black is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world. Black came into national prominence with his appearances on The Daily Show in 1996. Those appearances led to comedy specials on HBO, Comedy Central, Showtime and Epix. In 2001, he won Best Male Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards. He has released eight comedy albums, including the 2007 Grammy Award-winning The Carnegie Hall Performance. He won his second Grammy Award for his album Stark Raving Black and has published three bestselling books: Nothing’s Sacred (Simon & Schuster, 2005), Me of Little

Faith (Riverhead Books, 2008) and I’m Dreaming of a Black Christmas (Riverhead Books, 2010). In 2012, he performed eight sell-out shows at Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway as well as did one of his two HBO specials, Black On Broadway. In 2015, Black notably voiced the character “Anger” in the Academy Award-winning Pixar film, Inside Out. Additionally, Lewis Black does a live streaming show called The Rant Is Due at the end of each of his standup performances. This show is written by the audience watching throughout the world and also by the audience in the area of each show. With so much to get off their chests, people use Lewis’ platform to rant about what on their minds.

“Black is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world.”

AN EVENING OF SONGS & STORIES Friday, October 11, 2019, 7:30pm • The Brown Theatre

WHEN ASKED ABOUT THE FIRE that

fuels SWITCHFOOT’s acclaimed live performance, bassist Tim Foreman says, “We don’t play all these different shows all over the world to JUST bring people together. We play these songs to show that all along we never were that far apart.” With a career spanning over 20 years, 11 albums, a film and millions of tickets sold, the Grammy Award-winning band SWITCHFOOT is embarking on one of their most ambitious endeavors to date. Grab your seats and get ready to join SWITCHFOOT as they set out on a quest unlike any they’ve ever taken before. SWITCHFOOT is performing not one but TWO sets back to back each night.

12

It’s like having two SWITCHFOOT concerts in one evening: a stripped-down acoustic concert with untold stories and inspirations behind some of your favorite songs PLUS a full-blown rock concert to end the night. They will play the old and new songs, and promise to dive deeper into the catalogue than ever before. This tour comes on the heels of the SWITCHFOOT’s much anticipated 11th studio album, NATIVE TONGUE, released in January. CODY KO & NOEL MILLER: TINY MEAT GANG LIVE Saturday, October 12, 2019, 8:00pm • The Brown Theatre

CODY KO AND NOEL

MILLER are two former software engineers who left their rock solid, bullet proof careers to become pretty decent comedians with no health insurance. They started the Tiny Meat Gang podcast late last year, and since then are still doing the podcast, No Flex. In January, they finally achieved the American dream by setting out on a self-financed comedy tour and entertaining tens of hundreds of people around the 9th smartest nation in the world.

The duo believes that the key to their success lies in their ability to overcome their small-ish physical stature with their 6-foot, 7-inch tall personalities. Now they’re finally taking their athlete confidence and—again, pretty decent—senses of humor to the stage for an hour and a half of literal balls-out comedy where you can learn how to summon your inner tall guy.

THE COLONEL OF COMICS: ZOMBIES, ANTI-HEROES & THE ART OF TONY MOORE Wednesday, October 23, 2019 • 5:30pm Reception, 6:30pm Program The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, Bomhard Theater

TONY MOORE was “raised by a

career, perhaps the most precious of all was being commissioned by Governor Steve Beshear as a Kentucky Colonel, following in the footsteps of his grandfather.

wild pack of televisions” in the small town of Cynthiana, KY. Moore (top) spent his formative years on his grandfather’s tobacco farm dreaming of little else than growing up to be a comic book artist.

Tony will have a conversation with University of Louisville’s Dr. Joe Turner. Joe (bottom) was born into a family of Kentucky transplants. According to family lore, his great grandfather was involved in the infamous TurnerHoward feud in Harlan Co., KY, which led his grandfather to resettle in Baltimore, MD. Two generations later, Joe earned a Ph.D. at the University of Delaware before taking his job as an English professor with UofL.

His mother never stifled his passions or fussed over his interests in darker media, allowing him to soak up the wealth of influences that still inform his work to this day. The freedom to explore the world in his imagination, coupled with the tenacity he learned from the hard-working farmers around him, set Tony Moore up for achieving that dream. Graduating from Harrison Co. High School in 1997, Tony went on to nearly complete his BFA in drawing from the University of Louisville’s Hite Art Institute before abandoning his studies to pursue his career illustrating comics. Most known for his work on The Walking Dead, Moore also co-created the books The Exterminators and Fear Agent, and has since lent his hand to bombastic runs on Marvel’s Ghost Rider, Punisher, Venom, and Deadpool, and has drawn covers for countless others. He has been nominated twice for the comics industry’s prestigious Eisner Award. Of all the honors he has received throughout his sterling

Joe first became interested in comics in 5th grade, when the X-Men cartoon began airing on Saturday mornings. His fullfledged love for comics developed when he found Neil Gaiman’s Sandman a few years later. Now he regularly teaches courses on comics, where he gets to share his love for the medium. He is convinced that comics is one of the few remaining media in which innovation remains truly possible. Join us for an evening exploring the pastoral landscapes and personal demons that have inspired and resurrected the mind of Colonel Tony Moore to bring life to today’s darkest comic heroes.

Month, Kentucky to the World is teaming up with the Let’s Empower Employment Initiative for a dynamic program featuring multiple female speakers from our booming culinary arts ecosystem.

In the past few years as Kentucky’s reputation as a food and beverage mecca has grown, female chefs have been at the forefront in many ways. Local figures like Damaris Phillips, Loreal Gavin, Annie Pettry, and Ouita Michel are appearing on nationally televised programs, from Top Chef to Next Food Network Star, all while staying firmly planted in The Bluegrass State. They’re truly doing the work of bringing what we all know is special about Kentucky to the world stage. The LEE Initiative, co-founded by Chef Edward Lee and Director Lindsey Ofcacek in 2015, is currently in their second season of their Women Chefs Initiative program. The Initiative pairs female chefs with mentors and focuses 16

We’re lucky to live in a state with incredible access to local agriculture, an unparalleled connection to bourbon, and an absolute wealth of wonderful, local restaurants and exclusive dinners. Our program will touch on all of these points, but in true Kentucky to the World form, we’re going to be shining our spotlight on extraordinary individuals and the experiences that shaped them.

“The Initiative pairs female chefs with mentors and focuses on community building in an immersive learning experience to advance their careers.” If that’s not exciting enough, The LEE Initiative will be announcing their next season of female chef mentees live on stage that night and you’ll be the first to know. Don’t miss out on this amazing evening!
