BLACK VIOLIN: THE EXPERIENCE TOUR

Thursday, March 21, 2024 | 7:30pm | Brown Theatre

A U D I E N C E 6
It’s a unique thing that brings people together who aren’t usually in the same room, and in the current climate, it’s good to bring people together.

For nearly two decades, Black Violin has been merging string arrangements with modern beats and vocals and building bridges in communities along the way. Members Kev Marcus and Wil Baptiste first met in orchestra class at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, becoming classically trained on the violin and viola through their high school and college careers. Post-college, they reconvened to produce beats for South Florida rappers, and began building an audience in local clubs. They later went on to win Showtime at the Apollo in 2005, and eventually sold out headline performances at venues across the country, including a sold out two-night headline run at The Kennedy Center in 2018.

NPR took note and declared “their music will keep classical music alive for the next generation.” Black Violin’s 2019 album release, Take the Stairs, earned a Grammy Award nomination for “Best Contemporary Instrumental Album”. The band also recently received their second ever Grammy Award nomination for the track “The Message” as Best Americana Performance, in collaboration with The Blind Boys of Alabama.

Black Violin plays roughly 200 shows a year; many of which are performances for young, low-income students in urban communities. In the last year alone,

the group has played for over 100,000 students with the goal of challenging stereotypes and preconceived notions of what a “classical musician” looks and sounds like. “The stereotypes are always there, embedded so deep in our culture,” says Wil. “Just by nature of our existence we challenge those ideas. It’s a unique thing that brings people together who aren’t usually in the same room, and in the current climate, it’s good to bring people together.”

In 2019, the group launched the Black Violin Foundation Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth by providing access to quality music programs in their community. BVF believes that music and access to music programs should not be determined by race, gender, or socio-economic status. Black Violin Foundation’s inaugural program the Musical Innovation Grant for Continuing Education will provide scholarships to young music students to attend a program of their liking that fosters musical creativity and innovation.

PROGRAM NOTES

Travel down the rabbit hole MOMIX-style with Moses Pendleton’s newest creation, ALICE, inspired by Alice in Wonderland. As Alice’s body grows and shrinks and grows again, MOMIX dancers extend themselves by means of props, ropes, and other dancers.

“We don’t intend to retell the whole Alice story,” he says,“but to use it as a taking off point for invention. I’m curious to see what will emerge, and I’m getting curiouser and curiouser the more I learn about Lewis Caroll. I share his passion for photography and his proclivity for puns”.

The Alice story is full of imagery and absurd logic – before there was Surrealism, there was Alice. Alice is an invitation to invent, to let the imagination run wild. “Go Ask Alice”, sang Grace Slick in “White Rabbit” – she also said, “feed your head”.

Pendleton continues, “You can see why I think Alice is a natural fit for MOMIX and an opportunity for us to extend our reach. We want to take this show into places we haven’t been before in terms of the fusion of dance, lighting, music, costumes, and projected imagery. Our puns are visual, not verbal. It’s not modern dance, it’s Momix – under the spell of Lewis Carroll, who was under the spell of Alice – who was still learning to spell.”

As with every MOMIX production, you never quite know what you are going to get. Hopefully, audiences will be taken on a journey that is both magical, mysterious, fun, eccentric, and much more. As Alice falls down the rabbit hole and experiences every kind of transformation, we invite you to follow her.

We see Alice as an invitation to invent, to dream, to alter the way we perceive the world, to open it to new possibilities. The stage is our rabbit hole, we welcome you to drop in!.”

WHO'S WHO in the COMPANY

MOSES PENDLETON

(Artistic Director) has been one of America’s most innovative and widely performed choreographers and directors for over 50 years. He co-founded the ground-breaking Pilobolus Dance Theater in 1971 while still a student at Dartmouth College. Pilobolus shot to fame in the 1970s. By the end of the decade, he had begun to work outside of Pilobolus, performing in and serving as principal choreographer for the Paris Opera’s Intégrale Erik Satie in 1979 and choreographing the Closing Ceremony of the Winter Olympics at Lake Placid in 1980. In that same year he created MOMIX, with Alison Chase, which rapidly established an international reputation for inventive and often illusionistic choreography. The troupe has now been creating new work under his direction and touring worldwide for over four decades. Mr. Pendleton has also been active as a performer and choreographer for other companies. He has worked extensively in film, TV, and opera and as a choreographer for ballet companies and special events. He staged Picabia’s Dadaist ballet Relâche for the Paris Opera Ballet and the Joffrey Ballet, and Tutuguri, based on the writings of Artaud, for the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He created the role of the Fool for Yuri Lyubimov’s production of Mussorgsky’s Khovanschina at La Scala, choreographed Rameau’s Platée for the U.S. Spoleto Festival, and contributed choreography to Lina Wertmuller’s production of Carmen at the Munich State Opera. Mr. Pendleton has created new works for the Arizona Ballet and the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and he teamed up with Danny Ezralow and David Parsons, both former MOMIX dancers, to choreograph AEROS with the Romanian National Gymnastics Team. Mr. Pendleton choreographed The Doves of Peace, featuring Diana Vishneva and 50 Russian ballerinas, for the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Winter

Olympics at Sochi. Film and television work includes the feature film F/X2 with Cynthia Quinn, Moses Pendleton Presents Moses Pendleton for ABC ARTS cable (winner of a CINE Golden Eagle award), and Pictures at an Exhibition with Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony, which received an International Emmy for Best Performing Arts Special in 1991. He has also made music videos with Prince, Julian Lennon, and Cathy Dennis, among others. Mr. Pendleton is also an avid photographer whose work has been presented in Rome, Milan, Florence, and Aspen. He was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1977, a recipient of the Connecticut Commission on the Arts Governor’s Award in 1998, received the Positano Choreographic Award in 1999, and the 2002 American Choreography Award for his contributions to choreography for film and television. In 2010, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts (HDFA) from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where he delivered the commencement address. In 2021, Mr. Pendleton received the degree of Doctor of Arts, honoris causa, from Dartmouth College, for his lifetime contributions to the arts.

AN EVENING WITH BRANDY CLARK & HAYES CARLL

Friday, March 29, 2024 | 8:00pm | The Kentucky Center – Bomhard Theater

BRANDY CLARK

A 17x Grammy-nominee, CMA Awardwinner and Tony-nominee, Brandy Clark is one of her generation's most esteemed songwriters and musicians. In the midst of yet another landmark year, Clark released her widely acclaimed self-titled album this past spring and is nominated for six awards at the upcoming 66th Annual GRAMMY Awards: Best Americana Album (Brandy Clark), Best Americana Performance ("Dear Insecurity" feat. Brandi Carlile), Best American Roots Song ("Dear Insecurity"), Best Country Song ("Buried"), Best Country Solo Performance ("Buried") and Best Musical Theater Album (Shucked).

Produced by 9x Grammy-winner Brandi Carlile, the album features Clark's most personal songwriting to date and landed on several "Best of 2023 So Far" lists including the Los Angeles Times, The Tennessean and Variety, who praises, "one of the year's best…further clarifies that she's one of America's treasures," while Forbes calls the album "an Americana Masterpiece" and Billboard declares, "Clark continues to convey her inexorable talents as both a song-crafter and vocal interpreter."

In addition to her work as a solo artist, Clark has written songs such as "A Beautiful Noise," the Grammy-nominated duet performed by Brandi Carlile and Alicia Keys, and Kacey Musgraves'

"Follow Your Arrow." She also composed the music and lyrics for the hit musical comedy, Shucked, alongside her longtime collaborator, Shane McAnally. With the show, Clark won Outstanding Music at the 67th Drama Desk Awards, while Shucked was also nominated for nine Tony Awards in 2023.

HAYES CARLL

The country simplicity that imbues Hayes Carll’s songs can sometimes hide the social conscience and sharp humor that also runs through them, but if you want to find those things, they are there. In fact, Carll has spent over 20 years having a conversation about what it is we’re all doing here with anyone who will listen. He makes us laugh––but then he makes us cry. We judge a song’s protagonist, only for Carll to spin us around to commiserate with them.

“I like to tug at heartstrings, find commonality with others, reflect on my own life, and sometimes I do it in a lighthearted way,” says Carll. “A lot of musical styles found their way onto this record, but my first and most formative influences came from country music. This is a country singer-songwriter record. It’s just unapologetically me.”

Carll is talking about You Get It All, his eighth album. His voice, rich but

worn, has never sounded better. As a songwriter, he is in top form, turning droll confessions, messy relationships, motel room respites, and an exasperated, hitchhiking God into modern nuggets.

The New York Times likened Carll’s ability to undergird humor with a weightier narrative to Bob Dylan. When Carll talks about the sounds that are in his own head, he mentions Randy Travis. That juxtaposition defines the singularity of Carll’s career: He exists in a space of his own, informed by John Prine, Tom Waits, and Dylan but also by Travis, Kenny Rogers, and Hank Williams, Jr.

Those influences may have made him hard to pigeonhole, but he’s still been embraced. Two Americana Music Awards, a Grammy nomination for Best Country Song, and multiple Austin Music Awards line his resumé. He’s had the mostplayed record on Americana radio twice. His songs appear on the screen regularly and have been recorded by Kenny Chesney, Lee Ann Womack, and Brothers Osborne, to name a few.

You Get It All was produced by Allison Moorer and guitar legend Kenny Greenberg. Carll credits his partnership with singer, songwriter, and artist Moorer, his wife, as a force that helps both clarify what he wants and challenge selfimposed limits. “She’s a world-class artist

A U D I E N C E 26

who has a way of helping me articulate my vision,” he says.

Opener “Nice Things” layers a laughout-loud narrative exposing humanity’s botched stewardship of Earth –– and one another –– over vintage country cool. In the song written with the Brothers Osborne, God comes down to check on us –– and she is not impressed. “It’s social commentary, but it’s not dour,” Carll says. “I hope the song can make people sing along, laugh a bit, and maybe recognize that we can do better.”

The title track is classic Carll — a frontporch singalong with a deeper message for those who want it. Self-deprecating and sweet, the song is an ode to bringing one’s whole self to a relationship ––t he good and the bad. “I’m at a point in my life where that rings true to me,” says Carll. “What I want, and what I think a lot of people want, is to feel like they’re getting the real thing.”

“Help Me Remember” is a feat of storytelling that tackles an underrepresented topic in art: dementia from the perspective of the patient. “It’s a visual song. To tell this story, we had to put the listener right there,” Carll says. “I was thinking about how scary and sad it is for the person who is suffering from it, and how heartbreaking and frustrating it is for the friends and family going through it with them.”

Among Carll’s co-writers is singersongwriter Brandy Clark, who helped him pen and perform “In the Mean Time,” a gorgeous, honky-tonk waltz which perfectly depicts the damage couples can inflict on each other when they’re at their worst. The multi-dimensionality of relationships is a thread woven throughout the entire album. “When we’re our weakest or most afraid, real

damage can be done to our relationships, as well as our spirits,” says Carll. “You can love somebody, everything can be as good as you could’ve imagined, but when your traumas or fears come out, all that love can disappear in an instant.”

Rollicking through snarling 80s country guitar licks, “To Keep From Being Found” is an escape to a motel room with a TV on wheels, a bath, and line after delectable line.

Subdued album closer “If It Was Up to Me” aches through a list of wishes that seem frivolous at first but build into a portrait of pain that’s far more complicated. Written with Moorer and Sean McConnell, it’s a gorgeous example of one of Carll’s favorite artistic devices: leading listeners to underestimate a character with whom they’ll ultimately empathize. “The way humor and sadness can work together is powerful,” he says.

Honest and sometimes subversive, but never mean-spirited, Carll keeps writing sad, funny, compelling songs in which nobody’s perfect or predictable –– at least not for long. And he can’t quit wishing we’ll all realize that’s the way anything worth having or being has got to go. “I hope this record helps people feel good, laugh a bit, and maybe give them something to lean on when they need it,” he says. “I hope they dance to it, too.”

DUSTY SLAY: THE NIGHT SHIFT TOUR

Friday, April 19, 2024 | 7:00pm | The Kentucky Center-Bomhard Theater

In 2018, his show stealing showcase at the prestigious Just For Laughs Comedy Festival caught the attention of Hollywood tastemakers, but Slay’s irreverent sense of humor developed before he even stepped on stage, through over a decade of working thankless blue collar jobs.

Long before anyone had ever even heard of Tik Tok, at eighteen years old, Slay dropped out of community college. At 19 his plans to join the army were foiled by an arrest. By 21 he moved from his hometown of Opelika, AL to Charleston, S.C. On the coast, Slay worked as a waiter and pesticide salesman

A U D I E N C E 31

for over a decade while moonlighting as an obscure, often drunk, open mic comedian.

It wasn’t until he quit drinking in 2012 that he started to take comedy and his unique talent for telling jokes seriously. His smooth baritone voice and relatable stories about growing up poor in a trailer park quickly made him a local Charleston favorite. After being voted Best Local Comedian and winning the Charleston Stand Up Comedy Competition, both two years in a row, his well-intentioned friends and colleagues encouraged Slay to move to LA and take a shot at the big time.

While this may have been sound advice for the average aspiring artist, Dusty wanted to try to make it in comedy on his own terms: by living the South, without getting too far away from the home that grounded him.

Today, Slay has close to half a million Tik Tok followers, four Late Night appearances, a Comedy Central set and a Netflix half-hour special under his belt. He enjoys selling out comedy clubs across America on weekends, then chills out at home in Nashville, Tenn., with his wife Hannah, and daughter Daisy. He’s even a regular at the legendary Grand Ole Opry, sharing the stage with the musicians he grew up loving.
