WELCOME

We have much to celebrate this month both on and off our stages as we head into spring with new performances and new beginnings. The Kentucky Center lobby restoration is finally complete following the June 2018 fire. Your home for the arts on Main Street is better than ever, with a more accessible ticketing counter, expanded women’s restrooms, beautiful lighting that highlights the new ceiling, and acoustics that make the lobby not just a gathering spot before shows, but a performance space on its own. Our world-class art collection is uncovered and on display again, with more pieces scheduled to return to The Kentucky Center building soon. We’ll celebrate all of this — and YOU — during an upcoming community event. Be on the lookout for more details. In addition to the shows featured in this book, we are welcoming a wide variety of exciting and diverse performances to our family of venues. At The Kentucky Center, we celebrate PNC Broadway in Louisville’s premiere of Anastasia, the premiere StageOne Family Theatre’s fun and magical Dragons Love Tacos (the April 11th Main Lobby, I cannot wait!), Louisville Ballet celebrates our Old Kentucky Home with Kentucky! Volume One, Kentucky Opera’s Youth Opera Program brings a fresh take to the classic story of Robin Hood, and the Louisville Orchestra will have you saying “Mamma Mia!” with they perform with Arrival from Sweden, the world’s greatest ABBA tribute show. At the Brown Theatre, Kentucky Performing Arts Presents the 30th Anniversary tour of Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story, and Louisville Orchestra partners with Squallis Puppeteers to bring the family favorite Peter + The Wolf not only to the Brown Theatre, but also to our standing room venue Old Forester’s Paristown Hall. I encourage you to visit our website, KentuckyPerformingArts.org, and click on “All Shows” to see the full calendar of shows and events. I think you for being here tonight. You make great art come alive on the stage and throughout our community. I look forward to seeing you soon and experiencing more performing arts together. Enjoy the show.

listed his religion as “musician” on Dweezil’s birth certificate). Dweezil’s early years were spent largely away from the spotlight—something of a rarity for the child of a celebrity, but perfect for cultivating a close relationship with his family. Having watched his father perform concerts from the side of the stage since he was in diapers it was no surprise that he began to show an interest in music early on. At age 6, he received his first guitar, a Fender Music Master from his dad. It wasn’t until he was 12 that he began to show a serious interest in manipulating the instrument to make music.

Dweezil Zappa was born on

September 5, 1969 in Los Angeles the son of Frank Zappa. It was inevitable that from the moment of his birth his life would be filled wallto wall with music (his father having

Having primarily heard the music his father was working on or listening to at home while growing up, Dweezil soon found himself exposed to some new sounds on the radio. Besides his father’s music he began listening to the Beatles, Queen, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Who and Jimi Hendrix. Like many aspiring guitarists of his generation, Dweezil’s ear was caught in a stranglehold by the trailblazing guitar styles of Edward Van Halen and Randy Rhoads. He listened to their records for hours on end trying to figure out a way to translate

what he was hearing in his head to his fingers at the other end of the guitar. Along the way, he had opportunities to ask his dad for some help. “I remember asking Frank to help me figure out the song ‘Revelation/Mother Earth’ from Blizzard Of Oz. I really didn’t know anything about chords and in that song Randy Rhoads was using classical music elements that were really new to rock guitar at the time. Frank helped me learn the finger picking intro.” To gain more fundamental knowledge of technique and scales Dweezil was fortunate to have some assistance from one of the musicians in his father’s band at that time, Steve Vai. Dweezil became remarkably proficient in a very short amount of time due to his intense practicing sessions. “Steve made a notebook, which I still have, of scales and exercises and I

practiced the stuff from that book at least 5 hours a day.” In 1982, at the age of 12 he made his first onstage appearance with his father’s band at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. “That was a great experience. I was so excited to have been asked to play but I was incredibly nervous. Since I could only really play lead in the key of A, Frank devised a hand signal for the band to modulate the song ‘Stevie’s Spanking’ down to A from its original key of B. Acer I finished my solo he gave the cue for the band to modulate back up. It was so cool how he had so much control over the music, it almost seemed like a magic trick to me. It made a big impression on me and has stuck with me my whole life.” Later that year he recorded his first single, “My Mother Is A Space Cadet”, released on Frank Zappa’s Barking Pumpkin label.

The amazing story behind that recording is that it was produced by Edward Van Halen. (On the sleeve it is credited as being produced by De Vards in order to avoid any contractual issues for Van Halen.) Dweezil was 12 years old and had only been playing guitar 9 months when this track was recorded. Edward Van Halen played the opening slide guitar riff and the outro melody with the double stop bends. Dweezil plays all the rest of the guitar parts. “There are no words to describe how inspirational it was for me to be able to work with Edward on that recording. I was 12, a novice player and in complete awe of his super-human accomplishments. I had a terrible sense of rhythm and he tried really hard to help me with that. I had only been playing for around 9 months and I had never practiced with a metronome. He was funny in the studio. We were all so young, just 12 and 13 and Edward joked that it was time for us kids to have a milk and cookie break. When I played the solo on ‘Space Cadet’ Edward worked on getting the right guitar sound. That was one of my favorite parts of the session. We were using one of Frank’s brown Acoustic combo amps. He had 5 or 6 of them that he was using on tour and Edward played through all of them to see which one sounded best. At one point he was teaching me about doing punch in over dubs, he explained that I had to play along with the parts that were already recorded so that it would seamlessly blend with the new part I was about to record. I remember it being very difficult to do since the stuff I played for the solo was not worked out ahead of time. “I did the whole solo with all of the finger tapping stuff and vibrato bar dives. Edward made up a cool part that he showed me for acer the solo that

“Dweezil proved that he could reach his goal to form a core band of previously unknown expert musicians capable of respectfully executing his father’s music.” lead back to the vocal but I couldn’t bend the unison notes in tune since my hands weren’t strong enough. So he ended up playing the unison bend melody acer the solo. The slide guitar intro came about around then as well. I couldn’t play that in tune either since I had never played slide before and it’s a specialized technique that takes a long time to master. He played that intro as well. Watching him do that stuff was so impressive. I did all of the other guitar stuff that you hear on the record” In 1984, Dweezil contributed guitar solos to both “Stevie’s Spanking” and “Sharleena” on Frank’s album Them Or Us. In 1986, Dweezil made his debut in Hollywood as an actor with his role in the classic 80s film Pretty In Pink. 1987 saw Dweezil raise his profile further with another film role alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mick Fleetwood in The Running Man. In television he worked as a guest MTV VJ. During that same period he recorded and released his first full length album, Havin’ A Bad Day. This album contained the single “Let’s Talk About It” which featured Moon Zappa on vocals and found itself on regular rotation on MTV. The video featured cameo appearances from Frank Zappa, Robert Wagner, Don Johnson and Jane Fonda as well. Around this same time, Dweezil made his own cameo appearances on records for a variety of diverse artists. He played a solo on the Fat Boys’ “Baby You’re A Rich Man”.

Dweezil also played on the Grammy Nominated cover of “Wipeout” with Herbie Hancock and Terry Bozzio from the Back To The Beach film soundtrack. He was asked to join Stevie Ray Vaughan and Bonnie Raitt in contributing guitar performances to Miami Vice star Don Johnson’s solo album. While Dweezil actually played on the song “The Last Sound Love Makes” it was his appearance in the video for Don Johnson’s single “Heartbeat” that would most notably link him to the project.

There were a handful of live shows played to support the Confessions album. That tour saw the band develop a unique set of skills and usher in the birth of a remarkable non-stop medley that grew to contain 200 songs performed in 20 minutes.

1988 saw Dweezil sign a deal with Chrysalis Records, releasing his second album My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama.

Armed with a mountain of material and no permanent drummer the band entered the family owned rehearsal space called Joe’s Garage and rehearsed with several different drummers who ended up playing on tracks for the new album. Those drummers included Terry Bozzio, Mark Craney, Toss Panos, and Tal Bergman. Rather than move to a studio they set up for recording rehearsals. The band recorded over three dozen tracks at Joe’s Garage. The Shampoohorn album was completed in 1992 but awaited its release over a year later. It was eventually released with 2 different track listings.

The title track and video, a cover of the Frank Zappa single, found its way into the MTV rotation. More TV work followed in 1990 Dweezil and Moon Zappa starred with Laverne and Shirley legend Cindy Williams in a sitcom for CBS titled Normal Life. With the release of his third album Confessions in 1991, Dweezil began to branch out musically, blending his heavy rock approach with touches of his father’s distinct compositional insignia. Guest appearances on this album pointed the way toward the future for Dweezil, including contributions from Nuno Bettencourt, Gary Cherone and Pat Badger of Extreme and legendary guitarists Warren DeMartini, Steve Lukather and Zakk Wylde as well as Frank Zappa sidemen Mike Keneally and Scott Thunes. Moon Unit Zappa also added vocals to the album. Dweezil conceived and directed two videos from the album, Gotta Get to You and Vanity both of which featured Robert Wagner as a guest star. Robert Wagner has appeared in 4 of Dweezil’s videos as well as the Music for Pets infomercial spoof.

After completing the Confessions tour, Dweezil formed a new band and project called Z. The band was primed to make a new album. Just as the band started to solidify the drummer Josh Freese exited.

The band featured Mike Keneally and Scott Thunes and initiated its new drummer, Joe Travers, before departing for a world tour. Thunes was replaced by Bryan Beller in 1994. The band toured the US and Europe in 1995. They played original material as well as some more oddball medleys including the infamous “Peavey Medley.” It was created to take the audience on a tour of the history of music from the 60’s-90’s. The medley was only performed once at a NAMM show function for Peavey Electronics in 1995. Dweezil and the band were introduced that night by Dick Clark.

In 1996 they released a follow-up album, Music for Pets, which had been pieced together over the previous three years. By the time of the album’s release, both Beller and Keneally had left the band and Z gradually ceased to exist. Dweezil stayed in the public eye however, with several projects including composing the theme music for the Emmy Award winning Fox television show The Ben Stiller Show and on camera TV appearances including taking the role of Ajax in the Klasky Csupo animated series Duckman and a TV series for the USA network called Happy Hour which he starred in alongside Ahmet. 2000 saw Dweezil issue his first solo album since 1991’s Confessions with the release of Automatic. By this time, Dweezil’s musicianship had come full circle as he showed off his

guitar virtuosity with eclectic all guitar orchestrations of “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch” and “Hawaii 5-0.” In 2003 more television work came about as Dweezil formed a band for the WB unconventional improvisational comedy On the Spot and performed live in each episode. He also composed the theme music for the WB series The Jamie Kennedy Experiment and composed dozens of tracks for the music library Extreme Music. Many of these tracks are heard on various television shows around the world. The next several years saw Dweezil preparing to take on an extremely difficult challenge—bringing his father’s legendary music back to the concert stage. In 2006, some indication of what could be expected surfaced with Dweezil’s next solo album Go With What You Know. The album featured Dweezil’s most creative, advanced guitar work to date and he was aided by keyboardist Aaron Arntz and bassist Pete Griffin, who would soon become involved in the live band Dweezil was putting together. Finally, in the spring of 2006, Dweezil’s new live band Zappa Plays Zappa hit the road for their first, tour. Playing a long, ambitious set of Frank Zappa favorites and obscure gems to big audiences of crazed Zappa fans, Dweezil proved that he could reach his goal to form a core band of previously unknown expert musicians capable of respectfully executing his father’s music. He was uniquely qualified to bring these compositions back to life with complete authenticity from the page to the stage. Helping to deliver the goods was his absolutely stellar band of first-rate musicians including brass/woodwinds/

keyboards/obvious fan favorite Scheila Gonzalez among others. Without a “cosmic crystal ball” it was impossible to see to how far into the future this project would last. Bearing that in mind Dweezil decided to add some extra frosting to the cake and invite some former FZ band members to join him on the inaugural tour. The earliest ZPZ tour included band alumni Steve Vai on guitar, Napoleon Murphy Brock on tenor sax and lead vocals and Terry Bozzio on drums. This lineup was captured in the group’s first Zappa Plays Zappa release on CD and DVD in 2008. This project netted Dweezil his first Grammy Award win for Best Instrumental Performance for its version of the Frank Zappa classic “Peaches En Regalia”. In 2007, the tour continued and new elements were introduced. Ray White joined the tour on vocals. This lineup of the band recorded their next live outing Return Of The Son Of… which was issued under Dweezil’s name in 2010.

Apostrophe (‘), in its entirety. A DVD from that tour featuring performances by George Duke performing with Dweezil and his band has completed post-production and is awaiting a release date. Constantly learning and evolving his guitar art, Dweezil Zappa is both the modern face of Zappa music and the person who can bring it fully-formed into the future. Since 2010 Zappa Plays Zappa has released a few F.O.H recordings and altered its band members. It’s current lineup is known as the “rocking teenage combo.” Now a seven-piece band, they are firing on all cylinders propelled by the rhythm section of Ryan Brown on drums and Kurt Morgan on bass. Boundless energy is contributed by the

Once again Dweezil found himself up for Grammy contention when the version of Frank’s guitar solo vehicle “The Deathless Horsie” was nominated for Best Instrumental Performance. 2009 saw ZPZ undergo personnel changes. Both Aaron Arntz and Ray White left the band and were replaced by keyboardist Chris Norton and Ben Thomas on lead vocals and trumpet. The band continued their run of successful worldwide tours, playing to devoted fans and showcasing a constantly changing selection of Frank Zappa compositional gems. In October 2009 the band started to become known as Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa, and in 2010 they embarked on a US tour during which the band played one of Frank’s best-loved albums, A U D I E N C E

rest of the line-up which includes original core member multi-instrumentalist Scheila Gonzalez as well as multi-year veteran Chris Norton on keyboards along with vocalist, Cian Coey and all-around musical genius, Adam Minkoff. Dweezil has developed his online guitar course for students. It’s branded as “DWEEZOLOGY” and is available here on the DZW site as well as online at truefire.com. He has also participated with the likes of Jazz legends Mike Stern and Lee Ritenour in the top-notch Crown Of The Continent guitar festival in Montana, 2014 -2016. A Frank and Dweezil Zappa scholarship was created to help students attend the camp. 2015 marked a milestone for Dweezil’s Zappa Plays Zappa project. The band has consistently played concerts around the world for the past 10 years. Racking up well over 1,000 shows. In that time Dweezil did not have a time to cultivate his own music. November 27, 2015, marked the release of Dweezil’s first new album since Go With What You Know in 2006. Dweezil Zappa has returned to his musical roots with his new CD release Via Zammata. Fusing analog tape and tube guitar amps alongside surprising instruments such as fretless guitar and the oud, Zappa draws you into his intimate, and multifarious musical world. Armed with unexpected vocal arrangements that sound like the Beach Boys procreated with the Bulgarian Women’s Choir, this collection of 12 uniquely orchestrated songs represents a true metamorphosis for Dweezil Zappa the solo artist. The album was produced and arranged by Dweezil Zappa and features songwriting collaborations with Frank Zappa and venerable actor John Malkovich.

In 2016, Dweezil found himself in the midst of a conflict which resulted in a name change for Dweezil’s touring project. Dweezil stopped using the name Zappa Plays Zappa and now continues to make music and tour under his own name. The current band lineup is Dweezil’s favorite so far. “This is the best version of the band I have ever had. The musicians are able to tackle the hardest instrumental passages and cover a limitless range of vocals.” Dweezil’s most current album release (2018) is Live In The Moment II, a guitar solo compilation record in the style of his father’s Shut Up And Play Yer Guitar discs. Live solos interspersed with studio tracks and interstitial palette cleansers. Dweezil’s proudest accomplishments are as father to his two daughters Zola Frank Zappa (born 2006) and Ceylon Indira Zappa (born 2008). He lives in Los Angeles with his daughters and his lovely wife Megan, whom he adores. Produced by Kentucky Performing Arts and ProductionSimple.

TOMMY EMMANUEL, CGP with special guest, Sierra Hull Saturday, March 14, 2020 • 8:00pm • The Brown Theatre

“For me, music has always been about collaboration–the push and pull you get from another human being’s energy,” Chet Atkins. Today, he plays hundreds of sold-out shows every year from Nashville to Sydney to London. All the while, Tommy has hungered for what’s next. When you’re widely acknowledged as the international master of the solo acoustic guitar, what’s next is an album of collaborations with some of the finest singers, songwriters and, yes, guitarists alive today.

Tommy Emmanuel has achieved

enough musical milestones to satisfy several lifetimes. Or at least they would if he was the kind of artist who was ever satisfied. At the age of six, he was touring regional Australia with his family band. By 30, he was a rock n’ roll lead guitarist burning up stadiums in Europe. At 44, he became one of five people ever named a Certified Guitar Player by his idol, music icon

“For me, music has always been about collaboration–the push and pull you get from another human being’s energy,” explains Tommy. “Even when I play solo, it feels like I’m playing to the emotions I’m getting from the crowd. To feel the love or the joy or the hope coming through these other pickers and singers was electric–I played in ways I never would on my own.” Accomplice One is a testament to Tommy’s musical diversity, the range of expression that stretches from

topped the country charts in another era, with Tommy’s propulsive rhythm supporting Crowell’s sly lyrics while his tasty lead playing weave in and out.

– Jason Isbell

For those hankering for virtuosic hot picking, the rave-up “Wheelin’ and Dealin’” sees him trading licks with J.D. Simo and Charlie Cushman, while a jawdropping rendition of “Purple Haze” with Dobro master Jerry Douglas captures all the fire and energy of the Hendrix original as the two modern masters push each other to new heights with each raunchy slide and bend. On “You Don’t Want to Get You One of Those,” a sly vocal and acoustic duet with Dire Straits’ legend Mark Knopfler, there was a third, invisible presence in the studio– the late Chet Atkins.

authentic country-blues to face-melting rock shredding, by way of tender and devastating pure song playing. The songs are a mix of new takes on indelible classics and brand-new originals from Tommy and his collaborators. The artists who stepped forward to join Tommy in the studio are an impressive list of some of today’s most respected performers, from across the musical spectrum–a lineup including Jason Isbell, Mark Knopfler, Rodney Crowell, Jerry Douglas, Amanda Shires, Ricky Skaggs, J.D. Simo, David Grisman, Bryan Sutton, Suzy Bogguss and many more. This is an album for all types of Tommy Emmanuel fan–from longtime guitar aficionados who’ve followed his career for decades, to lovers of great songs and melodies who flock to Tommy’s shows for the emotional authenticity driving every performance. Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Jason Isbell conjures up the sweaty atmosphere of his Muscle Shoals roots on opener “Deep River Blues,” a classic fingerpicked blues which has been a longtime staple of Tommy’s live shows. Country and bluegrass legend Ricky Skaggs lends his mandolin and unmistakable voice to “Song and Dance Man,” a chronicle of a life lived for the next show. Tommy’s subtlety and tastefulness blends with Amanda Shires’ gorgeous vocal and fiddle playing to transform Madonna’s “Borderline” and Rodney Crowell’s “Looking Forward to the Past” could’ve 20

“Mark and I both learned so much from Chet–he was a hero and a mentor to each of us, and we’ve tried to bring his spirit forward into the future in our own playing,” says Tommy. “This song that Mark wrote captured Chet’s sense of humor so well and I had the time of my life in the studio with him conjuring the master as we laid it down.” While this was the first time he and Knopfler had collaborated, the album also featured some of Tommy’s longtime fellow road warriors, who have covered the miles in buses and planes around the world on tour over many years. “Djangology” is a gypsy jazz treat cut live in Havana, Cuba with Frank Vignola and Vinny Raniolo and “Rachel’s Lullaby” reunites Tommy with Hawaiian ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro. The song, written for Tommy’s youngest daughter, shows him continuing to find inspiration from an evergreen source–his love of his family.

A U D I E N C E

Since he and his brother Phil taught themselves to play as toddlers, the guitar has been Tommy’s real first language– and he’s more articulate on his signature Melbourne-made Maton acoustics than most people are with words. His unerring sense of groove marked him as Australia’s youngest rhythm guitarist as The Emmanuel Quartet crisscrossed the country. By the time he made it to the big city in his late teens, Tommy was a rock star, slinging a Fender Telecaster alongside the biggest stars of the day. It was a good life, but deep down Tommy knew there was more to his musical destiny. A shy country kid with little confidence, it took an encouraging meeting turned jam session with his guitar hero Chet Atkins to build his self-belief. By the late 80s he was ready to go it alone, to make

instrumental guitar records made for an audience broader than just guitar fans–a move with zero precedence in Australian music. Despite the odds, Tommy released a string of hit albums, racking up awards wins and nominations, and becoming a huge celebrity in his home country, culminating in an incendiary performance with his brother Phil at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Influenced by the Merle Travis/Chet Atkins fingerstyle of guitar picking, Tommy developed a style of solo guitar playing that encompasses the range of a whole band– covering drums, bass, rhythm and lead guitar and a vocal melody simultaneously. No loop pedals, no overdubs, just one man and ten fingers. While some artists take ten-piece bands on the road and still fill out the sound with backing tracks, Tommy builds a complete sonic world entirely on his own.

“His approach is always song and emotion first, his music the embodiment of his soulful spirit, sense of hope and his love for entertaining.” For many players, the technical mastery of the technique would overwhelm the emotion of the music, but not for Tommy. His idols are not just the great players, but also the great pop songwriters and singers–Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, The Beatles and their ilk. While thousands of fans have spent years trying to unpack and imitate Tommy’s technique, for him it’s just the delivery system. His approach is always song and emotion first, his music the embodiment of his soulful spirit, sense of hope and his love for entertaining. Which is not to say he dismisses the CGP, the Guitar Player awards, the Grammy nominations, the numerous magazine polls naming him the greatest acoustic guitarist alive. He’s grateful for it all, and the incredible journey that’s led him to the most invigorating period of his career–six decades into it. For Tommy though, the greatest reward is always the same–to make the next great record,

and to see the beaming audience at the next great show. “When I was a kid, I wanted to be in show business. Now I just want to be in the happiness business–I make music, you get happy. That’s a good job.” Tommy isn’t the kind of man who looks to nostalgia–it’s more that he treats his history in the same way he treats the history of music overall: There’s magic threaded in through all the eras that’s worth celebrating and revisiting. Now in his sixties –although on stage he can seem 25–life and music are about improvisation, variety and happiness. “Making Accomplice One has been this great journey through so many of the worlds I’ve inhabited through the years,” concludes Tommy. “Playing with old friends, new friends, heroes, people I’ve been like an older brother to… and musically to jump around from bluegrass to jazz to blues to just pure songs, it’s like going to the world’s greatest buffet and picking out all my favorite meals. People try to categorize what I do, to put me in a genre or put a label on me. I always go back to that old Duke Ellington line, about ‘there being two types of music, good and bad.’ Well I try and play the good kind, and on this record I got to play it with the best people.”

Kentucky Performing Arts presents

GOITSE Sunday, March 15, 2020 • 7:00pm • The Kentucky Center-Bomhard Theater

The popular and multi-award-winning

quintet Goitse was forged in the whitehot creative crucible of Limerick’s Irish World Academy. Named Live Ireland’s “Traditional Group of the Year”, Chicago Irish American News’ “Group of the Year”, as well as winning the prestigious “Freiburger International Leiter 2016” award in Germany, Goitse have become a leader of the new generation of traditional Irish ensembles. Goitse has released five critically acclaimed recordings and maintains a year-round touring schedule that includes performances throughout Ireland and the UK, Germany, France and the United States. Their distinctive sound lies in the quality of their own compositions interspersed with traditional tunes from the countryside

Goitse (Go-wit-cha) is an informal Gaelic Irish greeting meaning ‘come here’. of Ireland and abroad, which make each performance unique. Laying the foundations for the music are World and All-Ireland Bodhrán champion Colm Phelan and Conal O’Kane, who is fast making a name for himself as one of the finest guitarists of his generation. The gripping rhythm section sets a powerful drive for the music while the sweet, charismatic voice of Áine McGeeney draws audiences into a song the way few performers can. Together, the quintet Goitse makes what Irish Music Magazine calls “Music that’s brimming with energy and creative zeal.”
