Plus, just in time for Halloween, StageOne Family Theatre presents the delightful story Bunnicula in the Bomhard Theater.
In the coming weeks, we are thrilled to herald the return of Dance Theatre of Harlem to Whitney Hall as part of our Brown-Forman Midnite Ramble Series, presenting a new vision for ballet in the 21st century. Entertainment Events presents the uproariously funny Late Nite Catechism in The Kentucky Center’s MeX Theater. Louisville Ballet’s haunting tale of love and betrayal, Giselle, takes center stage at the Brown Theatre. PNC Broadway in Louisville presents the amazing story of the one-and-only Tina – The Tina Turner Musical.

PAT METHENY
Friday October 6, 2023 | 8:00pm | The Kentucky Center
Pat Metheny was born in Lee's Summit, MO on August 12, 1954 into a musical family. Starting on trumpet at the age of 8, Metheny switched to guitar at age 12. By the age of 15, he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City, receiving valuable on-thebandstand experience at an unusually young age. Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974.
Over the course of his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton, the young Missouri native already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style, which blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility — a way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded
deeply in the jazz tradition of melody, swing, and the blues.
With the release of his first album, Bright Size Life (1975), he reinvented the traditional "jazz guitar" sound for a new generation of players.
Throughout his career, Pat Metheny has continued to redefine the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument.
Metheny's versatility is nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. Metheny’s body of work includes compositions for sologuitar, small ensembles, electric and acoustic instruments, large orchestras, and ballet pieces and even the robotic instruments of his Orchestrion project, while always sidestepping the limits of any one genre.
As well as being an accomplished musician, Metheny has also participated in the academic arena as a music educator. At 18, he was the youngest teacher ever at the University of Miami. At 19, he became the youngest teacher ever at the Berklee College of Music, where he also received an honorary doctorate more than twenty years later (1996).
He has also taught music workshops all over the world, from the Dutch Royal Conservatory to the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz to clinics in Asia and South America. He has also been a true musical pioneer in the realm of electronic music, and was one of the very first jazz musicians to treat
the synthesizer as a serious musical instrument. Years before the invention of MIDI technology, Metheny was using the Synclavier as a composing tool. He also has been instrumental in the development of several new kinds of guitars such as the soprano acoustic guitar, the 42-string Pikasso guitar, Ibanez’s PM series jazz guitars, and a variety of other custom instruments.
It is one thing to attain popularity as a musician, but it is another to receive the kind of acclaim Metheny has garnered from critics and peers. Over the years, Metheny has won countless polls as "Best Jazz Guitarist" and awards, including three gold records for (Still Life) Talking, Letter from Home, and Secret Story. He has also won 20 Grammy Awards spread out over a variety of different categories including Best Rock Instrumental, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, Best Instrumental Composition at one point winning seven consecutive Grammies for seven consecutive albums. In 2015 he was inducted into the Downbeat Hall of Fame, becoming only the fourth guitarist to be included (along with Django Reinhardt, Charlie Chrisitan and Wes Montgomery) and it’s youngest member. Metheny has spent much of his life on tour, often doing more than 100 shows a year since becoming a bandleader in the 70’s. At the time of this writing, he continues to be one of the brightest stars of the jazz community, dedicating time to both his own projects and those of emerging artists and established veterans alike, helping them to reach their audience as well as realizing their own artistic visions.
AN EVENING WITH DAVID SEDARIS
Tuesday, October 17, 2023 | 7:30pm | Brown Theatre
David Sedaris is one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. He is a master of satire and one of today’s most observant writers.
Beloved for his personal essays and short stories, David Sedaris is the author of Barrel Fever, Holidays on Ice, Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls, and Calypso, which was a Washington Post Best Book of the Year. He is the author of Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary, a collection of fables with illustrations
by Ian Falconer. He is also the author of an essay length ebook titled Themes and Variations.
Each of these books was an immediate bestseller. He was also the editor of Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules: An Anthology of Outstanding Stories. His pieces regularly appear in The New Yorker and have twice been included in “The Best American Essays.” The first volume of his diaries Theft By Finding: Diaries (1977-2002) was a New York Times best-selling book. As a companion piece to the book, Jeffrey Jenkins published and edited an art book of Sedaris’s diary
covers, entitled David Sedaris Diaries: A Visual Compendium.
His book, The Best of Me (Little Brown/ Hachette, Fall 2020), is a collection of 42 previously published stories and essays, about which novelist Andrew Sean Greer wrote in The New York Times: “You must read “The Best of Me.” It will be a new experience, knowing that enough time has passed to find humor in the hardest parts of life. More than ever — we’re allowed to laugh.” His other books include second volume of his diaries, A Carnival of Snackery, Diaries (20032020) (Little Brown/Hachette, October 5, 2021); and his latest title, Happy-Go-Lucky (June 2022).
Searis and his sister, Amy Sedaris, have collaborated under the name “The Talent Family” and have written half-a-dozen plays which have been produced at La Mama, Lincoln Center, and The Drama Department in New York City. These plays include Stump the Host, Stitches, One Woman Shoe, which received an Obie Award, Incident at Cobbler’s Knob, and The Book of Liz, which was published in book form by Dramatists Play Service.
Sedaris has been nominated for five Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. His audio recordings include “David Sedaris: Live for Your Listening Pleasure” and “David Sedaris Live at Carnegie Hall.” A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premiere at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). Since 2011, he can be heard annually on a series of live recordings on BBC Radio 4 entitled “Meet David Sedaris.”
In 2019 David Sedaris became a regular contributor to CBS Sunday Morning, and his Masterclass, David Sedaris Teaches Storytelling and Humor, was released.
There are over 16 million copies of his books in print and they have been translated into 32 languages. He has been awarded the Terry Southern Prize for Humor, Thurber Prize for American Humor, Jonathan Swift International Literature Prize for Satire and Humor, Time 2001 Humorist of the Year Award, as well as the Medal for Spoken Language from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In March 2019 he was elected as a member into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2020 the New York Public Library voted Me Talk Pretty One Day one of the 125 most important books of the last 125 years.
You can follow David on Facebook at facebook.com/davidsedaris or visit his official website at davidsedarisbooks.com
“Sedaris ain’t the preeminent humorist of his generation by accident” – Whitney Pastorek, Entertainment Weekly
“Sedaris has hit upon the narrative equivalent of Pepsi, or the PlayStation, or oxygen, or the haircut: something that others in the world might actually want and find useful... He’s smart, he’s caustic, he’s mordant, and, somehow, he’s... well, nice.” – Bill Richardson, Toronto Globe and Mail
“Sedaris’s droll assessment of the mundane and the eccentrics who inhabit the world’s crevices make him one of the greatest humorists writing today.” – Chicago Tribune
“Sedaris belongs on any list of people writing in English at the moment who are revising our ideas about what’s funny.” – San Francisco Chronicle

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSELIVE IN CONCERT
Friday, October 20, 2023 | 7:30pm | Brown Theatre
Let’s go back to where it all began with this concert event!
Featuring a soundtrack that blends symphonic orchestral music with hiphop, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Live in Concert pairs a screening of the Academy Award®-winning animated film with live musicians and turntables featuring a DJ scratcher live on stage. Emmy® winner Daniel Pemberton composed a sprawling score of boundary-pushing original music that
is complimented with song contributions by Post Malone, Lil Wayne, Jaden Smith, and Nicki Minaj.
The hip-hop based score results in a sonic universe that is woven throughout the fabric of the film, supporting its themes of resilience and universal heroism. Joining the tour is The Broadway Sinfonietta, an all-women and majority women-of-color orchestra led by conductor Emily Marshall.
ABOUT THE FILM
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask. A superhero classic for a new generation, Miles is an Afro-Latinx
teen who is bitten by a radioactive spider in the subway and gains mysterious powers. Joined by spider-heroes from parallel universes, Miles must master his new powers to save his city from a villain who could destroy it all.

WHO’S WHO
DANIEL PEMBERTON is an Ivor Novello winning and multi-BAFTA nominated composer well known for embracing a wide range of musical mediums — from electronic to orchestral — throughout his work. After more than a decade establishing himself as one of the most inventive and experimental voices in British television — scoring countless Emmy and BAFTA award winning dramas and documentaries such as COMPLICIT (2013), PEEP SHOW (2003–2015), UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS (2010), DESPERATE ROMANTICS (2009), SPACE DIVE (2012), OCCUPATION (2009) and HIROSHIMA (2005) — Pemberton moved into the world of film with the period supernatural thriller THE AWAKENING (2011). His hybrid choral, orchestral and electronic score caught the ear of Ridley Scott who, heavily impressed with the standout work and what he called the composer’s “10,000 hours in the garage” hired the composer to score his feature THE COUNSELOR (2013). He collaborated again with Scott on the director’s first foray into television — THE VATICAN (2014). This work, alongside scores to other features such as BLOOD (2012), IN FEAR (2013) and CUBAN FURY (2014), led him to be named ‘Discovery Of The Year’ at the prestigious World Soundtrack Awards 2014. Other credits include the acclaimed soundtrack to Guy Ritchie’s THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. (2015). Featuring a kaleidoscope of unusual instruments — including cimbaloms, harpsichords, bass flutes and exotic percussion — the bold 1960’s influenced music caught the attention of cinema goers and critics alike and has established him as one of the most versatile andexciting voices working in film today. Now collaborating with yet another legendary director —
Academy Award®-winner Danny Boyle — Pemberton continues to approach the world of scoring from a new angle, creating another unique and unexpectedly inventive soundtrack with his latest works — STEVE JOBS (2015), GOLD (2016) and KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD (2017). Well known for his creative and incredibly versatile approach to writing no two scores ever sound the same.

POD SAVE AMERICA LIVE
Saturday, October 28 | 8:00pm | Brown Theatre
Pod Save America brings its signature no-BS conversations about politics to Louisville. There are no off years in politics or political podcasts, and with important elections this fall in states including Louisiana and Virginia, Pod Save America is back on the road. Former Obama administration officials and co-hosts Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, Tommy Vietor, and Dan Pfeiffer break down the political news that makes us laugh, cry, and scream into the void – to help figure
out what matters and what each of us can do about it.
Jon Favreau served as Barack Obama’s head speechwriter from 2005-2013, a role that was far more senior and influential than Jon Lovett’s. Since leaving the White House, Favreau has written and spoken about politics and speechwriting to audiences throughout the world. In 2017, he co-founded Crooked Media, where he’s a co-host of Pod Save America and host of The Wilderness. Jon grew up
outside of Boston, graduated from the College of the Holy Cross, and now lives in Los Angeles with his wife Emily and their dog Leo.
Jon Lovett is a podcast host, former presidential speechwriter, and straight shooter widely respected on both sides. In 2017 he co-founded Crooked Media, where he co-hosts Pod Save America and hosts Lovett or Leave It, two popular podcasts that are very good. Before Crooked, he served as a speechwriter in the Obama White House, co-created a comedy on NBC called 1600 Penn (canceled after one perfect season), and wrote speeches for Hillary Clinton. He recently switched to oat milk.
Tommy Vietor is a cofounder of Crooked Media, cohost of Pod Save America, and the host of the foreign-policy focused Pod
Save the World. In a past life, he worked for President Obama for nine years, including a stint as White House National Security Spokesman. Originally from outside Boston, Vietor now lives in Los Angeles with his wife Hanna and their dog Lucca. He tweets too much.
Dan Pfeiffer, Co-host, Pod Save America — Despite several members of the Morning Joe panel calling for his firing, Dan Pfeiffer served President Obama for eight years as his Communications Director on both the 2008 Campaign and in the White House and finally as Senior Advisor to the President. He is a CNN Political Contributor and the author of Yes We (Still) Can: Politics in the Age of Obama, Twitter, and Trump. Dan was born in Delaware and has been banned from traveling to Russia by Donald Trump's friend Vladimir Putin.
