THE HARBINGER - A PROPHETIC WEEK IN REVIEW October 2nd 2011 Settlements and Sanctions Negotiated or a UN Imposed peace?
By Luke
The International Community is loosing patience not only with Israel's ongoing defiance being flaunted in the face of the UN General Assembly, but also with an American veto used in Israel's favor over six decades, which the world community clearly perceives as a double standard. The Turkish Prime Minister said, "Until today, the UN Security Council has issued more than 89 resolutions on prospective sanctions related to Israel, but they've never been executed," Erdogan said, asking: "One might wonder why no sanctions have been imposed on Israel." "When it's Iran in question, you impose sanctions. Similarly with Sudan. What happens with Israel then?" Erdogan said, adding that had "thesesanctions been imposed in this day and age, the Palestine-Israel conflict would have been resolved a long time ago." A group of 26 ex-EU leaders has urged the union to impose sanctions on Israel for continuing to build settlements on occupied Palestinian territory. They said Israel "like any other state" should be made to feel "the consequences" and pay a price for breaking international law. "Time is fast running out" these former EU ministers stated. In a letter sent to European governments and EU institutions they suggested an ultimatum be sent to the Israeli government, if it has not fallen into line, that they should seek "an end to the US-brokered peace process - in favor of a UN solution." The current European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek said the sea change in the Middle East suggested that a business-as-usual model was no longer effective. "Following the tremendous changes brought by the Arab Spring, all the more (shows) the status quo is not a viable option," he said. "The time for peace is now." And now Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is warning that any American action, even symbolically, toward recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel must be avoided for the reason that it would jeopardize the peace process. An apparent last ditch attempt by the Obama administration to salvage the "peace process" and put some pressure on Israel before the hands of the clock strike twelve. In this case before the end of - twenty twelve. We shall see.

Dec 10, 2010 A group of 26 ex-EU leaders has urged the union to impose sanctions on Israel for continuing to build settlements on occupied Palestinian territory. They said Israel "like any other state" should be made to feel "the consequences" and pay a price for breaking international law. The signatories include the former EU foreign affairs chief, Javier Solana. The letter sent to European governments and EU institutions, asks EU foreign ministers to reiterate that they "will not recognise any changes to the June 1967 boundaries and clarify that a Palestinian state should be in sovereign control over territory equivalent to 100% of the territory occupied in 1967, including its capital in East Jerusalem". It also asks ministers to set the Israeli government an ultimatum that, if it has not fallen into line by April 2011, the EU will seek an end to the US-brokered peace process in favour of a UN solution, according to the EUobserver website. "Time is fast running out", the letter warns, because "Israel's continuation of settlement activity... poses an existential threat to the prospects of establishing a sovereign, contiguous and viable Palestinian state." In addition to Mr Solana, the letter was signed by 10 former leaders of European countries including Romano Prodi and Giuliano Amato of Italy, Richard von Weizsaecker and Helmut Schmidt of Germany, Mary Robinson of Ireland, Felipe Gonzalez of Spain and Norway's Thorvald Stoltenberg - 10 former ministers and two former EU commissioners. In a letter of response to the former leaders, sent on Tuesday and seen by EUobserver, Baroness Ashton said the EU's approach to Jewish settlement expansion would remain unchanged for the time being. In a statement following the US announcement, she said: "The EU position on settlements is clear: they are illegal under international law and an obstacle to peace. Recent settlement related developments, including in East Jerusalem, contradict the efforts by the international community for successful negotiations."
Erdogan: UN sanctions on Israel could aid Mideast peace process http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/erdogan-un-sanctions-on-israel-could-aidmideast-peace-process-1.387007 Sept 27, 2011
Sanctions imposed by the United Nations on Israel would have resolved the issue of Mideast peace long ago, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in an interview on Monday, adding that he felt the Quartet on the Middle East was not genuinely seeking to resolve the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
"Until today, the UN Security Council has issued more than 89 resolutions on prospective sanctions related to Israel, but they've never been executed," Erdogan said, asking: "One might wonder why no sanctions have been imposed on Israel." "When it's Iran in question, you impose sanctions. Similarly with Sudan. What happens with Israel then?" Erdogan said, adding that had "these sanctions been imposed in this day and age, the Palestine-Israel conflict would have been resolved a long time ago."
Europe supports Palestinian statehood http://www.upi.com/Top_News/Special/2011/09/29/Europe-supports-Palestinian-statehood/UPI26251317302802/
Sept 29, 2011 BRUSSELS, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- The right of Palestinians to advance in the international community as an independent state is "unquestionable," the European Parliament declared. The U.N. Security Council announced Wednesday that it referred an application for full membership submitted by Palestinian authorities to a U.N. committee tasked with vetting new members. The submission was part of a unilateral statehood initiative launched by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The European Parliament, in a resolution passed Thursday, said lawmakers viewed the Palestinian bid for statehood as legitimate. "The right of Palestinians to self-determination and to have their own state is unquestionable, as is the right of Israel to exist within safe borders," the resolution reads. European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek said MPs expressed support for Israel and an independent Palestine living side by side in a peaceful relationship. Washington has said it opposed the Palestinian initiative, believing the best path forward was through close negotiations between both sides, a track pursued with few breakthroughs for several decades. Buzek said the sea change in the Middle East suggested that a business-asusual model was no longer effective. "Following the tremendous changes brought by the Arab Spring, all the more (shows) the status quo is not a viable option," he said. "The time for peace is now."
Clinton, in a Sharp Turnaround, Warns Against Even Symbolically Recognizing Jerusalem as Capital of Israel http://www.nysun.com/foreign/clinton-in-a-sharp-turnaround-warns-against-even/87496/
Sept 27, 2011 Secretary of State Clinton, in a sharp departure from her stance when she was a senator, is warning that any American action, even symbolically, toward recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel must be avoided for the reason that it would jeopardize the peace process. Her warnings were issued in a brief she has just filed with the Supreme Court — in which she is arguing that a law she voted for when she was Senator is unconstitutional because it could require the U.S. government to give to an American citizen born at Jerusalem papers showing the birthplace as Israel.

Al-Maliki said the Palestinians have two options for the ninth vote: Colombia and Bosnia. The Palestinians are focusing their efforts on gaining the support of Bosnia. Al-Maliki said that Russian, China, India, South Africa, Brazil, Lebanon, Nigeria and Gabon will support the statehood bid. Clinton calls on world to 'pressure' Israelis, Palestinians http://www.jpost.com/DiplomacyAndPolitics/Article.aspx?ID=239902&R=R1
Sept 29, 2011 US secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday called on the world to "pressure" both Israel and the Palestinians in order to bring about the resumption of peace negotiations, AFP reported. Speaking at a joint press conference with her Egyptian counterpart, Mohamed Kamel Amr, Clinton said that "Egypt, the United States, the Quartet, everyone must be prepared to put pressure on both parties to try to move towards an agreement on outstanding issues." Addressing the contentious issue of settlements and the Palestinians' insistence that talks cannot begin until Israel agrees to freeze construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, Clinton stated, "if there was an agreement on borders, there would be no debate on the settlements, because everyone would know which side of the border was Palestine, and which was Israel." Clinton's statement comes the same day Quartet representative Tony Blair voiced concern over Israeli plans to build 1,100 new housing units in the south Jerusalem neighborhood of Gilo, which is located over the 1967 Green Line, official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

Sept 29, 2011 UNITED NATIONS — The UN Security Council on Wednesday pushed back a decision on the Palestinian bid to join the United Nations in a move that will give more time to international efforts to revive direct talks. But UN envoys for the two foes wrangled over who is to blame for the latest yearold negotiations deadlock, with diplomats warning both sides are hardening their positions. The 15-member Security Council sent the bid made by Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas last Friday to a special membershp committee to give its verdict. A full session of the council met for barely two minutes in the first public discussion of the bid that the United States has vowed to veto when it comes to a vote.
"Unless I hear a proposal to the contrary I shall send the application of Palestine to the committee on new members," said Lebanon's UN ambassador Nawaf Salam, president of the council for September. No comments were made and Salam hurriedly brought the gavel down to get the meeting over.
