CDs FOR THE PARTY

I write "introductions" every month for AUDIO, where there is no shortage of topics. An invitation to the Audio Video Show happens only once a year. It's a celebration, and I am honored by the privilege, though it's not always easy to come up with something new. I looked at last year's entry to make sure I wouldn't accidentally write something too similar, and I humbly (yet proudly) concluded that I couldn’t come up with anything more clever. So, this time, without much fanfare, I’ll draw attention to a specific detail.

This year, for the first time in twenty years, there has been a rise in CD sales. For most of the history of the Audio Video Show, we have witnessed the decline of CD players as they

first gave way to computers, then network players, and of course... turntables, which add prestige to every presentation. However, very few people come to the Audio Video Show with their own vinyl, and not many exhibitors would agree to spin records of uncertain quality. Meanwhile, music streamed from the internet still tends to be finicky at such events – sometimes the device logs out, or it freezes... And time at the Audio Video Show is precious. So, let's remember the CD: open it, place it, play it. And 99.99% of the time, it will play. In my opinion, it remains the most convenient medium, especially at such events, provided that the exhibitor agrees to let guests listen to their own music.

In the Studio TV3 hall at the PGE National Stadium, the second most expensive system of this year's Audio Video Show will be presented – a set from Dwa Kanały specialists costing over 1 million EUR. It includes the latest Magico M7 speakers, the latest MSB Cascade DAC digitalto-analog converter, and a separated amplification system from PILIUM –Cronus monoblocks and the Olympus preamplifier.

Audio Group Denmark continues to expand its flagship Aavik 880 line of devices. After last year's presentation of the SD-880 streamer, C-880 line preamp, and P-880 power amplifiers, this year the 880 series is joined by a new phono preamplifier. The R-880 supports all cartridge types: MM, MC, and even DS-Audio optical. Joining us will be audio industry legend Flemming Erik Rasmussen and Michael Børresen, who is responsible for the development of device designs at Audio Group Denmark.

World premiere of the latest flagship model from Clarisys Audio – Atrium. Clarisys has built its reputation in the audio world by offering full service and rebuild kits for Apogee speakers. For several years, the company has been offering its own designs, based on Apogee speaker technology, but with many improvements in the materials used. Surprisingly, the speakers are characterized by high efficiency (101dB) and high impedance, making them easily powered by tube amplifiers. Alongside the new Clarisys speakers, you will be able to listen to the latest version of Lampizator's flagship DAC –Horizon360.

Audio Research Ref 330M

The premiere of the latest reference monoblocks from Audio Research. According to the manufacturer, these are not the largest or most powerful amplifiers in ARC's history, yet they surpass all previous designs in sound quality. The latest monoblocks can be heard alongside Wilson Alexx VFX speakers (another premiere) and a digital source consisting of the dCS Vivaldi APEX system.

The device is designed as 100% dual mono, with independent and isolated circuits for the right and left channels. To minimize interference, the power transformers are housed in a separate box.

Master Tape Copies from Analogue Audio Association in Germany. The Analogue Audio Association is a registered association for the preservation and promotion of analogue music recording and reproduction. In the last few years, we have created an opportunity for music lovers to enjoy analogue master tape copies. In order to do justice to the demanding project with a high degree of vertical integration, only analogue studio equipment is used. We only use Telefunken and Studer machines and mixing consoles, which are regularly maintained and adjusted by experts. For all master tape copies offered, we, as licensee, have received from the licensor a 1st generation master tape copies with CCIR equalization and a tape speed of 38 cm/s. From these master tape copies, we create analogue 1:1 copies with the parameters you have specified, i.e. CCIR or NAB equalization, tape speeds of 19 cm/s or 38 cm/s on 26.5 cm NAB reels with studio tape or 18 cm plastic reels on long play tape. You might be surprised how fantastic our so-called small master tape copies sound on the 18 cm plastic reels with long play tapes.

The Lektor series is the Polish manufacturer’s best-known product line and has been in development for 26 years. Launched at last year’s Audio Video Show, Lektor Joy won the grand prize for the most important Polish product awarded to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Poland’s High Fidelity magazine. At this year’s show, we will be showcasing its more affordable version, the Lektor Step – a futuristic design made of aluminum and black glass. The electronics are virtually identical to those in the Lektor Joy, the only difference being the stereo DAC (the Lektor Joy has two mono DACs). The new Lector series will be accompanied by the company’s new power amplifier. At this year’s show, GigaWatt will be launching the limited 25th Anniversary Edition of its PowerMaster conditioner on the Polish market. This year’s show is an excellent opportunity to present some of the iconic brands in Hi-Fi Club’s portfolio – companies which have been setting global standards in the high-end industry for many decades. Connoisseurs of sophisticated sound need no introduction to America’s legendary McIntosh Laboratory. Established in 1949, the company is currently celebrating its 75th anniversary. On this occasion, we will be presenting the referencelevel MC2.1KW Anniversary Edition amplifier (boasting an impressive 2000 watts of power), C12000 Anniversary Edition preamplifier and MCD12000 Anniversary Edition CD/SACD player as well as the MT10 turntable with the Lyra Etna Lambda cartridge. The system will be paired with the Orion speakers from the American brand Rockport Technologies, a full-range floor-standing speaker system

that uses the company’s latest technologies when it comes to cabinet and driver design. Our next highlight is a presentation of the latest award-winning AW-800 mono-block power amplifier from Norway’s Electrocompaniet. At 2:00 p.m., we will be meeting in J.Sikora’s room at PGE Narodowy. In a session co-hosted with Wojciech Pacuła, Adam Czerwiński, a jazz musician who runs the AC Records label, will be presenting his latest album High Fidelity Presents: Art Farmer in Wrocław. This special two-disc 45 RPM album was released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of High Fidelity. Our anniversary will also be the central theme of the next session, which will take place in the same room at 3:00 p.m. Zbigniew Bielak, one of Poland’s best-known cover designers, will be talking about his favorite heavy metal records. The final session is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Sunday and will be held in the Accuphase/Estelona room at Golden Tulip Hotel. With higher brightness and a new static HDR processing algorithm, they provide even better 4K and 8K HDR quality. In the DLA-RS4200, the manufacturer has also increased the native contrast ratio to 150,000:1, resulting in a much more vivid image. Like its predecessor, the DLA-RS4200 features a 100 mm all-glass lens that provides incredible sharpness. Both models have also received Gen2 e-shift for greater clarity and detail with 8K content. The entry-level and mid-tier DLA-RS1200 and DLA-RS2200 models are entirely new designs. In addition to being more affordable, they have a reduced chassis footprint and weight compared to JVC’s previous native 4K projectors. Both models use D-ILA technology. The mid-tier DLA-RS2200 has twice the native contrast ratio of the earlier models and features a cinema filter to reproduce a wider range of colors in 4K. For our presentation, we will be using a Stewart Filmscreen fixed-frame screen with a GreyHawk 0.9-gain surface at a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The projectors will be installed on professional-grade Peerless-AV PRG-UNV mounts, which are adjustable with micrometer accuracy. The entire setup will be complemented by Purelink cables. Audio in the room will be provided by SVS with their EISA 2024–2025 award-winning Ultra Evolution line of high-quality loudspeakers. In addition, we will be demonstrating SVS’s latest PB-17 Ultra subwoofer. The product had its world premiere at the last HIGH END Munich, where it received fantastic reviews and began a worldwide audio odyssey. The model features a carefully designed and elaborate plinth that eliminates vibrations even more effectively, as well as BennyAudio’s unique belt drive that matches the best direct-drive turntables with its measured performance. In addition, the Odyssey is equipped with a proprietary tonearm. All these features work together to deliver superb sound quality that is hard to find even in more expensive designs. The source will be paired with electronics from the Dutch manufacturer Van den Hul in a system that has not yet been shown in Poland. The idea has been to combine the best-in-class loudspeaker drivers (Wavecor), Class D amplifiers (Purifi), Digital-to-Analog converter (Okto Research), room acoustic treatment (GIK Acoustics), measurement technology (Klippel), software engineering (Audiovero), professional woodwork (ROSE Handwerk) and experience in speaker building (Joachim Gerhard). All this is applied to a generic speaker in an imperfect room and can achieve outstanding performance! In this set-up music is streamed via Roon running on a ROCK kit audio server. The two-channel input is split into six channels. The speaker and room correction are applied together with a digital linear phase crossover via convolution. The output channels are fed to a DAC and then into the power amps, one for each chassis. It all sums-up in perfect low-distortion sound reproduction.

Rethm has been making speakers for 24 years. However, we are still relatively unknown as we are a boutique company that has consistently adhered to our core beliefs in sound reproduction, which is that musicality and an emotional connection are at the center of any fulfilling music listening experience. To this end, our speakers are designed around wide-band drivers as the musical signal cannot be chopped up into little pieces and put together by multiple drivers. As soon as a crossover enters the signal path – the music is dead in our opinion. Each of our four models therefore has, at its heart, a custom-designed wide-band driver that is built in-house. These drivers reproduce all the music from the upper bass frequencies all the way up into the high frequencies. We then bring in a powered bass module with four bass drivers per enclosure (in isobaric configuration as we do not like ported bass) to fill in the important bass and mid-bass portions of the music. We also believe that speakers should be highly efficient. This not only allows one to use even a 3-watt valve amp, but also makes every bit of nuance to come through as a result of the lightness and speed of the cone. Dynamics, transparency, cohesiveness – which also translates into spectacular, deep, threedimensional soundstage reproduction. And most of all you will hear an amazing, unforced ease to the way the music flows into and fills the room. Lots of detail, but zero fatigue. Something that is not common. Rethm last showed in Warsaw in 2019. Since then, we have completely redesigned our line, inside and out. We are showcasing amplifiers from the English company Sugden, which has been making highend audio products for more than 55 years. The company’s founder, James Sugden, developed his first pure Class A solid-state amplifier in 1964. Class A designs are characterized by a very simple circuit topology and the absence of audio signal distortion that is present in other classes of amplifiers (AB, C, or D). Sugden’s best-known integrated amplifier, the A21a, has been in production with minimal changes for more than 30 years. The company’s idea for 2024, however, is radical: to combine amplifiers into a 5.1 multichannel audio system. At the show, we will be playing DSD SACDs with music recorded in 5.1 multi-channel technology (which is pure audio, not a cinema effect). Sugden amplifiers do an excellent job with 5.1 surround or quadrophonic productions on SACDs, revealing the musical aspects of the recordings that are not available with two-channel stereo setups. By connecting the stereo amplifiers into a 5.1 audio system, we will be able to showcase a few different Sugden products at the same time, seamlessly working together to deliver a coherent multi-channel musical space. To build 4D musical shapes from 5.1 SACDs, we will be using our large and highly efficient Type-A loudspeakers together with their smaller version, the Type-A-Mini. Using this new model, in which “Mini” stands for reduced phase distortion, is essential in order to successfully render the 5.1 multi-channel musical space. And as for the 5.1 DSD SACDs, while symphony orchestras and jazz and rock concerts sound great on them, it is electronic music albums that offer the most interesting “effects”.

For the first time at the Audio Video Show, we are demonstrating the capabilities of smart projectors from XGIMI.
