Gerfalcon
The Gerfalcon (Falco rusticolus) is the world’s largest species of falcon. It visits Europe only in winter and it stays near the coast. Gerfalcons fly extremely fast and have been cherished as hunting falcons since the Middle Ages. White gerfalcons were regarded as especially noble and valuable. To this day they are used for hunting (and as gifts) by the rulers of the Arab regions.
In fall 2012 Matthias Claudius Aigner designed an exquisite life-sized model of the gerfalcon from which three porcelain varieties will be fashioned: in Biscuit, glazed and one handpainted version.
Porcelain is the ideal material to capture the noble look of the animal. Its guise and grace are expressed especially well by the sensitive surface. The hand painted version features authentic plume drawings and the raptor's fiery, glistening eyes.
Matthias Claudius Aigner, born in 1971, graduated from the master class of Alfred Hrdlicka in Vienna and is a visual artist. He lives and works in Linz. He has been working for Augarten Porcelain since 2012.
