ne misunderstanding about leadO ership is thinking that those at the top of an organization, or people with
a microphone (or a pulpit), are leaders. Certainly, these are noteworthy leaders, but they are not the ONLY leaders. Leadership has been defined as influence. If so, then everyone is a leader, whether at the top of the “org chart” or not. Moms and dads, grandparents, cousins, in-laws, aunts and uncles are leaders. Friends exert a tremendous influence. The attitude and behavior of teachers, secretaries, custodians, and kitchen workers influence, too. Fellow workers can inspire and motivate us. Children, students, and seniors all have leadership opportunities. Those with Down’s syndrome and their families often show us a more excellent way.

I remember how David Thomas modeled Christian ministry during my teen years, and ever since. I remember John Keefe opening the door for me at Epworth in West Tulsa for three years. I think other students and professors at O.R.U. and at Asbury Seminary. Since adulthood, Dana has been by far the biggest influence on me of anyone. I am grateful for the gracious laity who received and trained me as a young and inexperienced pastor in Vici/Lenora, in Sallisaw, at Sunny Lane in Del City, and here at Asbury, too. I think of Bishops and District Superintendents who have served as leadership and pastoral care models. I think of pastoral friends and fellow staff members serving with me in The United Methodist Church. Bill Mason, in particular, has had a huge impact on me.

W hat does church growth look like?
I believe that everyone who is part of Asbury wants us to grow and is willing to work toward making that happen. Every so often Tom is asked if we are more focused on growing the number of members and worship attendees or if we want growth to be measured by deepening levels of discipleship. Tom’s reply is always the same: we must grow in both measures. We want growth in our numbers and we want more people becoming more complete disciples of Christ. Asbury’s growth strategy has been the subject of discussion recently. Last year we lost 195 members due to death, transfers, etc. It takes that many new members just to stay even. Last year, including our young people going through confirmation, we accepted 474 members for a net addition of 279. This month I want to talk about several things that contribute to Asbury’s growth. Our most effective “advertising” outreach is the Perceptions radio spots that Tom does each day. These play on several local stations none of which specifically target a Christian audience. Even though they are very low-key (Tom simply mentions Asbury’s name at the end of the spot) many people first come to Asbury because they heard Perceptions. It is amazing that Tom writes a different script for every business day. His stories are very effective. Many of us have heard people outside of Asbury observe that the messages are a good general witness to the community. All of us who give financially to Asbury contribute to making this a successful part of Asbury’s growth.
requires hundreds of volunteers to help on Sunday morning and to lead small groups for students and for many other tasks. Many additional volunteers are needed for special events such as Spring Break Mission trips, Vacation Bible School, Upward Basketball, and camps, just to name a few examples. We minister to almost 1,000 children and students every week. It takes significant facility, staff, and financial resources to support all of this, including the support of these many volunteers. The investment makes a huge difference in the lives of the kids and the entire family.
In the future I may talk in more detail about how our other ministries impact Asbury’s growth in numbers and discipleship. For now, due to space constraints, I’ll just list them: Music, Worship, Adult Ministries, Care & Marriage, Discipleship (Adult Communities and Roadmap), Celebrate Recovery, and Missions and Outreach. In each case you can think about the manner in which they help us grow. I invite you to also think about Our ministries also contribute to growth. Two that what is required to make them successful. Leadership
WHY? by Katie Ruley
- A stay-at-home mom steps out of her comfort zone and into faith -
W hy would one want to step up and serve in leadership? In today’s busy beyond belief, over-scheduled, over-committed world, why would one choose to do this? Like we need one more thing to be responsible for? As if we want to risk the chance to look like a hypocrite?
So many potential risks…literally, your reputation at stake. Take my word for it, when our great and mighty God calls you to step up, don’t miss out on the opportunity! “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.” I Peter 2:9 It was Spring 2004 when God clearly laid on my heart that I was to start a Bible Study for South Tulsa Moms. “Absolutely!” I said. “In a couple of years, I will be
delighted to!” God responded, “No Katie. The time is now.The study will be this summer and in your home.”
That would not have been such a big challenge for me to take in had I not just had my third baby a couple of months prior and two other small children to care for under the age of five. I did not know how in the world it was all going to come together, but I knew without a shadow of a doubt that I was to obey the call. Needless to say, it was one of the most beautiful small group Bible Studies I had ever been a part of. Everything came together, and God provided everything needed to make it successful and fruitful. (Philippians 4:19) Looking back, I have seen miracles
Page 4
unfold from those 13 weeks that our small group spent together. And all because little ole me, a stay at home Mom, obeyed. “The Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does” (Eph. 6:8). The following Spring 2005, I was contacted by a member of Asbury’s Roadmap Council to see if I would prayerfully consider leading a Bible Study at Asbury that coming summer. I was so honored to even be considered. But, once again, insecurities started to creep in. What if no one signed up, what if someone asked a question I didn’t know the answer to, what about my kids - is it okay to leave them once a week? After contemplative prayer, I knew the answer was to be “yes”. Once again, God was calling me to step out of my comfort zone and serve His kingdom in this way. Fast forward four years. Asbury’s Summer Bible Study grew to the God-size number of 160 women! To have the honor and privilege to be a part of a leadership team who helped make this incredible outreach to women all over Tulsa possible is something that I will forever hold dear in my heart. The past several summers have allowed me to grow as a mother, a wife, and most importantly, a woman of God. Being a part of Christian leadership allowed me to seek Christ in a whole new way. The only way to fulfill His good and perfect will is to be filled with Him and Him alone. People skills and project management only go so far. It was with the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit that I was able to be used in this regard.
Page 5
As Tammy Lou Waite writes in her article on Christian leadership, “First and foremost, you have to be able to love all people without limit. You have to be willing to go into dark places and shine the light of God’s hope. You have to be brave and bold enough to stand up for absolute truth and refuse to be swayed by popular rhetoric. You have to have the heart of a servant and want to give the best of yourself to communicate God’s love to a hurting world.” Combine these traits with intense study of the Word, daily intimate prayer and last, but not least, the real you, and you are armed and ready. No one relates to a fake, a perfect person or worse yet, a liar. The way to draw people to God is to allow Him to work through you, and that means flaws and all. Your story, and your personal hope, will draw people to Him. Be yourself and He will shine! Looking back over the past six years is such a testament to the power of God.The way that He used a stay at home mother of four’s obedience and willingness to bring forth abundant fruit for His Kingdom is phenomenal! He certainly doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called. When we are weak, then He is strong. As II Corinthians 12:9 states, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Look at the Heroes of Faith in the Bible, each of them were ordinary people that God used in extraordinary ways. If you do anything this year, let it be an act of faith. Choose to step out so He can step up.You won’t regret it. Eternity for someone could be at stake.

- YoungLives provides spiritual mothers to teen mothers in need -
By Sylvia LaRose
It is a celebration of pink and blue, food and games, encouragement and
smiles. And here, Mother’s Day isn’t recognized only on May 9th, but at every gathering of Asbury’s YoungLives. Bringing the good news of Jesus Christ into the lives of adolescents is the mission of YoungLife, a nationwide ministry based on nurturing youth in God’s Word with adult guidance. YoungLives is a spin-off of that organization which pairs teen girls, who are expecting or raising a child, with mature Christian women to provide counseling and ongoing support. The group is about laughter, respect and eternal life. It’s about letting teen moms be teenagers, and providing relief from isolation with someone to help them figure out who they are and who they will become. It’s about modeling Christ’s love to young women who may not have experienced real love before. One Asbury member who is providing friendship, advice and love to these high school girls is Doris Schlafke. Years ago, while looking for organizations specifically serving parenting teenagers, she was saddened to realize that very few groups exist. While many organizations served pregnant teens, very few were available to teens who chose to raise a child on their own. “How could I, as someone who believed that all life is created by God, and therefore, sacred, ask a pregnant teenager to give her child life and then not offer her encouragement, resources and practical assistance?” says Doris.
That question became an obsession. And now, Doris is a mothering mentor to young women who need her. She and YoungLives offer fun, as well as meaningful time for a serious and relevant look at Christ. For many of these young women, their involvement with a mentor is the first time they hear of God’s desire to give them a personal relationship with Christ. “At first I thought the mentoring experience would take off and be a piece of cake,” says Doris. “But it was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my whole life. I wanted to quit several times because it did not look like a success. But to look back and see what God has done after I got out of the way has been incredible.” Teen moms face many challenges because they are truly living in two worlds. They have a desire to be a teenager, yet they have all the responsibilities required of parenthood. They often feel alone and abandoned by significant people in their lives once their child is born. Mentoring is about relationships. And real relationships can be messy. “In the beginning, I found it intimidating to leave my comfort zone and view life at their level and bring God into their world,” Doris continues. “The magnitude of the needs of these girls can be pretty overwhelming. I learned to just focus on the fact that Christ is going to meet their needs. I could only meet some. Their biggest need is their need for Christ – having a relationship with Him is a revelation for them. When that happens, we see their parenting change. We see the focus of their lives change.” Page 6
shows that Recent data the rate of teen pregnancies is falling, although the US still has the
highest number of teen births in the western industrial world, with 35 percent of young women becoming pregnant at least once before the age of 20. Teen mothers are less likely to complete high school, let alone earn a college degree. Oklahoma is one of the top ten states for births among women 15 to 19 years of age. Research also shows that today’s youth can benefit from a planned mentor program. Just as Jesus treated people with compassion, grace and a personal touch, mentors at Asbury, like Doris, are touching the lives of teens and their children by being able to meet them right where they are and helping with parenting, housing, job placement, schooling and transportation. They provide a listening ear, emotional support and prayer. By teaching teen parents how to value their children, mentoring is impacting this generation and the next. Doris trusts that God will multiply those efforts. “My experience as a mentor enriched and stretched my life in ways I would have never dreamed,” Doris exclaims. “Mentors don’t pretend to be perfect, but (we) have a willing heart for spiritual mothering, and God is using each one of us in a labor of love.” A former member of YoungLives reveals, “You have helped me, even when you knew I wasn’t on the right path. Your organization gave me so much courage even when I was miles away from you in a whole different state – to still attempt to walk the path of righteousness, to hope when no hope seemed real and available to me, for my life and my child’s life. And now look! I have three beautiful children, a wonderful and safe place to live, marvelous friends and family with whom I share my support, and my loving God who forgives me at every turn and whim. God is good all the time.” Friend to friend, mother to mother…pouring the love for God into another. They will begin to see His mission for their young lives.
“I will teach all your children, and they will enjoy great peace.” (Isaiah 54:13 / NLT) Page 7
TEn Steps
TO LEADERSHIP By Kim Beair, MS, LPC, NCC
are born with a Spiritual Gift to lead, but all of us lead SOME PEOPLE every day whether we realize it or not. A full-time mom leads when she tends to a play group, a teenager leads when he gives the convenience store clerk back the change he was over-paid, and the retiree leads when she gives up her space in the coffee shop line to accommodate a rushed business man.
Consider even the smallest events of your life as leadership opportunities and evaluate your efforts based on the following guidelines for success:
1. get real
We must assess any situation accurately; not what we want it to be through our feelings, but through the honest truth of the situation.
2. shoot straight
If we mince words, people may not truly understand where we are coming from. Direct is always best, whether people like that approach or not.
3. future focus
Visualize a bright future and have the ability and gumption to go for it – in a structured way. Assess if this is a viable option to pursue, then predict and anticipate obstacles. Move forward with a plan B or C if necessary.
4. bounce back
You have already planned for predictable obstacles, but realize there will be obstacles you did not anticipate. Bounce back with a clear vision of whether you should stay the course or jump ship. Even if you abandon your effort, be resilient in your recovery.
5. be bold
Know that the path of least resistance is oftentimes the fastest way to tragedy and heartache down the road. Strength, courage and truth must always be in the forefront because it is harder to do the right thing than the easy thing. Everyone may say what others want to hear, but it might not be what people need to hear. Being the “bad guy” at times is a given for a person of truth and strength.
Page 8
6.
MAInTAIn bALAnCE
Sympathy (mercy) tempered with boundaries. It is always good to attempt to understand where people are coming from, but no one will progress without clear boundaries and accountability to the truth.
7. Seek counsel then evaluate
Know yourself, get sound advice when needed then act confidently on what you know. Ensure your accountability team wants what is best for you rather than just telling you what you want to hear.
8. self-aware
Know yourself so well that you can evaluate your strengths and weaknesses and make adjustments when needed.
9. run with the pack
Ensure you are in the right pack. Strong horses yoked together can be pulled down by one weak horse, and so can you. Be aware of who you let into your inner circle, and only travel with those of like mind. Beware of the wolf in sheep’s clothing; be as innocent as doves, but as shrewd as snakes (Matthew 10:16).

It is true that Eagles fly alone. Eagles fly high and rise above the chickens, which end up in the frying pan. Though we need to stand for our convictions and rise like the eagle in life, we need to remember that in community, we need to interact as Dr. Harry Clarke Noyes describes in “The Goose Story” (ARCS NEWS, Vol. 7, No. 1, January 1992): discovered that geese fly in V formation, because as each SCIENCE HAS bird flaps its wings, it creates uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in V formation the whole flock adds at least 71 percent greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own. People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.
When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those who are headed the same way we are. When the Head Goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point. It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs with people or with geese flying south. Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. What do we say when we honk from behind? Finally, when a goose gets sick or is wounded and falls out of formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly, or until it dies. Only then do they launch out on their own, or with another formation, to catch up with their group. If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand up for each other like that. “Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.” 1 Timothy 4:16.

T
he matter of spiritual gifts and the Holy Spirit has perplexed many Christians through the years, just as in John Wesley’s time and right on back to the Apostle Paul and even Jesus’ first disciples. The problem for many Christians is that they try to define or put the Holy Spirit in some kind of box and think “now we understand the working of the Spirit.” Some of this stems from our insistence upon various denominational perspectives and experiences and also perhaps from a cultural bias that lacks personal experience. When we drink deeply of the scriptures, it doesn’t take long for us to come face to face with the reality of the Holy Spirit. It’s obviously important to Jesus and his ministry, as well as his desire to share the Holy Spirit with his disciples and subsequent generations of the faithful.
There is a natural tension established in the followers of Jesus between simply doing those things “I” think are good, and doing those things God wants me to do, (Romans 10:1-4 and Ephesians 2:10) It is all too easy to simply become zealous in a cause and then ask God to bless it instead of seeking God’s good purposes for which he created us. For me, this is the key, God created each of us for his awesome purposes so that we are somehow mysteriously and wonderfully connected to the greater body of Christ and the Kingdom of God. If you’ll take a moment to really meditate on and savor this image, you’ll realize and revel in the knowledge that God’s good purposes for your creation have cosmic implications. Paul wrote of creation rejoicing when a follower of Jesus does as the Spirit directs because that means salvation
“The role of the body of Christ is to provide opportunities to stimulate awareness of one’s gifts, help nurture those gifts so that they grow strong and bear fruit...” Page 10
or redemption, healing and restoration to wholeness in a way only God can provide. (Romans 8:18-27) After receiving the Holy Spirit, a follower of Jesus begins a journey of discovery of the spiritual gift(s) specifically chosen for them to develop and deploy for the building up and strengthening of the body of Christ. Some spiritual gifts challenge us to step forward as leaders while other gifts invite us to work quietly and gently behind the scenes. Some gifts challenge us to be bolder and more daring in our witness, like Peter, Paul, Priscilla and Phoebe, while other gifts might dare us to become encouragers of others like Barnabas, Tabitha and Junias. (Romans 16) The gifts of the Holy Spirit are numerous with some authorities saying there may even be over 125 identifiable gifts in the scriptures! No matter how many you count, the point is that every follower of Jesus receives at least one spiritual gift that is desperately needed to be put into service today. Many of these spiritual gifts are often quite obvious to the individual follower or to others that they have come to trust with their opinions and show up as passions that are energizing to that individual. But, not all spiritual gifts are initially obvious. They could be latent or under the surface gifts that only through continued maturation in Christ develop, grow to maturity and become evident to the follower or other disciples. Like all spiritual gifts, if the follower doesn’t recognize and exercise their spiritual gifts they will atrophy and die. The role of the body of Christ is to provide opportunities to stimulate awareness of one’s gifts, help nurture those gifts so that they grow strong and bear fruit so that new seeds of faith are created and planted in the world and can be nurtured towards maturity in the gospel and spirit of Christ. Asbury provides our members with an opportunity to gain insight into this special work of the Holy Spirit by offering a free, simple survey that can be taken in the comfort of your home using your computer. On the Asbury website, www.asburytulsa.org is a Spiritual Gifts tab. After hitting that tab you will be asked to fill out some information and then submit it. The service we have contracted with will usually respond within 48 hours to provide you with a special code so you

may then return to our website and enter that code which will give you access to the Spiritual Gifts Survey. Upon submitting your answers, (and if you run into any problems utilizing the survey, you can contact Doroto during normal office hours for assistance,) your responses will be evaluated and you will be provided a document which outlines, based on your particular personality, the Spiritual Gifts you have been blessed with. There are always a few surprises that you had not considered and should begin to develop further through the many opportunities at Asbury and the Oklahoma Annual Conference. It can also be a great point of discussion between family and friends or in your community and a marvelous starting point of a new relationship with Christ both in study and service. Do you know why God created you and selected special spiritual gifts for you? Are you fulfilling those purposes as a follower of Jesus? Get started today! It’s an exciting journey. BEYOND MEASURE - FINDING GOD’S LOVE AND GIFTS THROUGH MOTHERHOOD WITH SPECIAL NEEDS -
By Jonni Segnar
“Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Phil 3:13-14)
I BEGIN WITH THIS VERSE
because it reflects how I feel at this point in my life. I love how the Word speaks the truth to us in our circumstances and keeps us centered. As a little girl my only true aspiration was to be a mom. I also always felt certain that I would have a child with special needs. When I was pregnant with Michael I would lift prayers up that if he were to have special needs please God do not let it be autism. What I knew about autism up until that point made me think it was the one and only disability I would not be able to deal with. At the age of three and after a long journey of questioning, our son Michael was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, which is high-functioning autism. This is when I fell in love with the Mother Theresa quote, “I know God will not give me anything I can’t handle. I just wish that He didn’t trust me so much.” I pictured having a child with autism to mean that I would have a child who couldn’t love me back. Our Michael is now eleven years old and the love he offers me is beyond measure. The challenges families face when they have a child with autism are so similar and yet so different from one to the next. While we felt fortunate to have a child in the high-functioning category, it came with unique challenges of its own.
Michael has one foot in the real world and one foot in the world of autism. He doesn’t seem to fit in either world completely. He looks like every other child yet he stands out. I was never fully comfortable with dropping Michael off at Sunday School. If the volunteers in the class were not personal friends I felt like I had to stay with him. There was too much to explain and sometimes explaining just wasn’t enough to provide understanding. I have found myself thrust in to leadership positions many times but never before had I felt called to do so. In 2007, I heard about efforts to start providing support for children in our church with special needs. I was frustrated that things weren’t moving at the pace I hoped for. I found that my thoughts on this were all-consuming. No matter how hard I tried I could not think of anything else. Having worked for an autism pilot program in our state, I had seen the bigger picture. I knew that my family had skipped many “family friendly” events which were not “Michael friendly.” I was finally comfortable with the fact that Michael was no longer invited to birthday parties. Our social circle does not expand in the way other families do – getting to know other parents through your kids’ activities. Not only did my family have to fight the isolation that comes from having a child with autism, but the Page 12

majority of the families I worked with were believers who didn’t feel like they could go to their church. A church should be the one place you feel safe and yet it was the place they felt the most judged. This was bigger than just me. I made an appointment to speak with Pastor Tom and gathered up some notes. While he wasn’t able to immediately solve my Sunday morning dilemma, he did suggest that I start a support group. I left that meeting knowing that none of my problems were solved and yet I felt like a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders. This is how the Asperger’s Support Group for Moms (Tulsa RAM – Resources for Asperger’s Moms) began. From Pastor Tom to Charlene Giles to me starting in a tiny little room on Thursday evenings where we began just months after one meeting. That come. there. tended similar Page 13

storming that goes on in this group can be life-altering. Even the professionals we pay to help on this journey are not able to provide us with the knowledge and support we gain from each other. For many, we are merely a springboard towards getting started down this road. We understand each others’ struggles and we rejoice in each others’ victories. God has blessed me with this group of women. It is as much for me as it is for them. We can support each other in ways our families and friends cannot. And as for autism, it was not the curse I perceived it to be. Michael is nothing less than a gift to us. We have been blessed with both of our boys and I am more assured of His faithfulness each and every day. But that’s a whole other story. Note: Tulsa RAM meets the first Thursday of each month (except for July) in room 1506 from 7-9p.m. Email Jonni at thatsbaloney@gmail.com for more information.
With This Life
- a couple’s legacy of their 42 years with Campus Crusade
By Nikki Boyd
Don and Sue Myers
want to leave a legacy that says, “Have faith in God, have fun with people, have feelings for others, and have thankfulness in everything.” And they have cultivated that kind of heart for God and people not only in their family. For the last 42 years, they have poured their lives into fellow servants and national ministers on the field - leading them and loving them into a deeper knowledge of Jesus Christ. The Myers married in 1952 and as a young couple, spiritual leadership wasn’t a priority. “Neither of us were really true ‘born-again’ Christians,” says Don. “And, my Air Force experience had only deepened our secular spirit and lifestyle.” Upon returning from military service, Don and Sue settled in Tulsa and went to work with Don’s father at his floor-covering business. A few years later in 1963, a conversation over coffee would completely change the course of their lives. It happened during a business call Don had with an old high school friend. After talking “carpet” for a while, the friend began to ask questions, the last being,“Don, since Jesus Christ will not invade your life without your permission, would it surprise you if you discovered that Jesus was still waiting on your decision?” Don was flustered by the question. “I had to admit that there was no time in my memory when I had consciously opened my life to Christ,” recalls Don.“If that were true, then that might explain some of the many problems in my life - my spirit of anger, my vulgar vocabulary and our troubled marriage.”
He began to tell God how sorry he was for the bitterness, envy and pride in his life. Don claimed God’s forgiveness and asked Him to take control. Knowing Jesus made a drastic change in Don’s life, his language cleaned up and anger tantrums vanished. Don’s attitude and behavior transformed so rapidly that his family took notice - especially his wife, Sue. Sue wanted the same transformation. She began reading books about the Christian life and finally prayed to God that if He could change lives - even her husband - then He could change her. As she “willed her will to be God’s will,” the Peace that passes all understanding entered into her heart and life. As Don and Sue grew in their faith, the desire to do more for God deepened. They began to consider seminary or the mission field, though some thought them too old or having too many children. But within two years, the Myers were serving with Campus Crusade in New Staff Training. Though this new position met their spiritual and theological needs, God was opening other doors. “Without realizing it, I married a woman who had always harbored a secret desire to become a missionary in Africa,” says Don. When he got the news of a new assignment involving Lay Training in Nigeria, Don says Sue got so excited he “practically had to peel her off the ceiling!” Sixteen of the 42 years Don and Sue served with Campus Crusade, they directed the Africa ministry. In 1973, there was a staff of 67 thinly spread over six countries. In 1989 when the Myers handed the leadership
Page 16
over to three African leaders, the ministry had grown to 750 on staff, representing 28 countries. Of those serving, 68 percent of the staff and 80 percent of the leaders were African! The legacy of Don and Sue has reached worldwide. They have conducted more than 60 conferences
pastor in Surinam stood up at the end of the training and said with tears rolling down his face, “Now I know what to do! Now I know what to do!” Personal mentors like Dr. Henry Brandt and Dr. Bill Bright have inspired the Myers. “Both of these men spoke into our lives many times in many ways,” Don
“Our usefulness to God can endure to and though tribulation, trouble and into ripe old age because inwardly He renews our spiritual energy and the joy of serving Him.” (FamilyLife Marriage, Parenting and other staff conferences) in 31 countries. They have reached out to executives in London’s suburbs. And the Myers have also participated in discipleship and pastoral training in Kenya, Uganda, Nairobi, Jamaica, South Africa and South America, just to name a few. Don recalls some experiences of how God moved in the lives of missionaries they were training. One father of four was profoundly appreciative, learning that his wife and children deserve top priority. How they should have ‘interruption privileges’ to bring him out of any meeting at any time. One Dutch missionary

says. “They demonstrated risky faith and showed us how to ‘step out’ for the Lord and risk failing unless God showed up!” Don and Sue continue to “speak into the lives” of so many, building a legacy that honors God and leads others to Jesus. With hearts empowered by the Holy Spirit and the same determination to trust and obey, we can do the same. For those who wish to lead the way, the Myers offer encouragement: “Our usefulness to God can endure to and through tribulation, trouble and into ripe old age because inwardly He renews our spiritual energy and the joy of serving Him. So never give up!”
100th Wesley United Methodist
to celebrate
Anniversary in Motown Style
After 100 years of service
to the Lord and to this community, Wesley United Methodist, now known as Wesley Chapel Praise & Worship Center, will celebrate its centennial anniversary by bringing in musical talent known for its love songs: The World Famous Platters. “The history of this church shows that Wesley has always been a people of love,” says Pastor Chris Beach, who is leading the congregation into its next century of servanthood. “We see that now more than ever, our North Tulsa community needs a message of love to transform the challenges of this day.” May 1, a Saturday night, will feature the Platters performing its hit favorites at Venue 68 to raise funds for North Tulsa youth initiatives aimed at educating, inspiring and encouraging the future generation to be leaders marked by character, compassion and servanthood. The cost for full concert tickets will be $20 and must be ordered prior to the event.Tickets may be purchased by calling 734-0471 or going to www.wesleyministrycenter.org. May 2, Sunday morning, the Platters will perform several gospel songs during the 11 a.m. worship services at Wesley, located at 2750 North Cincinnati. At both venues, Wesley’s efforts to transform the children and families of its community will be featured in video and brochure format to allow others in the community to partake in efforts to rebuild the North Tulsa community. Not surprisingly, many of Wesley’s 100th Anniversary activities are centered around youths and preaching the good news of God’s love in Jesus Christ. “We find that the children have always been the top focus at Wesley,” says Doris Colbert, who supervises many youth initiatives at the church including Sunday School, summer camp and movie nights. “The new outreaches that have been developed for children will help instill in them positive attitudes, spiritual growth, a sense of unity and leadership skills.”

Wesley Chapel Praise & Worship Center is a member of the United Methodist connection that was formed in 1910, rebuilt after Tulsa’s 1921 race riot, and thrived and prospered to make disciples of Jesus Christ and reach the lost at any cost ever since. Now located at 2750 North Cincinnati, the church has a rich heritage of ministry to youths, families, seniors, and those who struggle with deep life issues. From Grandpa John’s Journal By John C. Westervelt
A
pril 2008 - The four-year-old class would be entertaining their mothers at a luncheon on this late spring day. Round tables in the parlor next to the children’s classrooms were covered with table clothes in several spring colors. The bright colors continued in the placemats made by the children for their mothers. In the center were fresh, spring flowers. The little girls wore their prettiest dresses for this occasion. As McKinlee entered the classroom in her ankle-length dress, Kiara said,“You look like Mary Poppins,” and she did. November 2008 - Jordon was drawing at an art center in the weekday preschool four-year-old class. As I stood nearby, she looked up and said, “Grandpa John, my little dog Jenny died.” I said, “I am sorry. What happened?” Jordon said, “Jenny and a big dog were let out together at the kennel. The big dog bit Jenny, and Jenny died. I miss Jenny, and so does my mommy. When Mommy talks on the telephone about Jenny, sometimes she cries.” May 2009 - Zane, in the four-year-old class, looked up at me and said, “There was a car accident and a girl was hurt really bad. It was on TV. The helicopter came to get her. If they had not, she would have died.” I said, “I am glad they saved her.” Zane said, “The helicopter coming was smart thinking.” February 2010 - The first thing the four-year-olds do as they enter the Asbury preschool classroom in the morning is pick up their wide-ruled sheet of paper and print their name. In the fall, the teacher had written their first name at the top in big letters. For the second semester, their last name is at the top for copying. Sitting at the table with the children to check their work and collect their papers, I told Cora, “You look nice in your pink striped dress.” Cora looked across the table at me and said, “I am not clashing any more.”
February 2010 – Miss Sue was trying to help the threeyear-olds understand that they were born in Oklahoma. First, she pointed out two children who were born in Iowa. Looking into the children’s faces on the rug in front of her she asked,“Where were you born?” Jordyn raised her hand and said, “The pink building.” Miss Sue, Miss Jan, and I knew that she meant Saint Francis Hospital. Reign’s hand was up, so Miss Sue called on her. Reign said, “A doctor took me out of my mommy and washed me in the sink.” February 2010 - My sister’s great grandson, Will, was being interviewed for readiness for kindergarten. The teacher asked,“Can you draw a circle?” Will said, “No.” Drawing with her pencil, the teacher asked, “Is this a circle?” Will said, “Actually, no. It’s an oval.” February 2010 - As I left the sanctuary after the 9:15 service, I passed a boy scout holding a sign telling about an upcoming spaghetti dinner. Drawn to the uniform similar to one I had worn seventy years ago, I stopped to look at the boy. As I studied his smile, I said, “You are Rich Capps!” Rich replied, “Grandpa John” and held out his arms for a hug just like he had done so often as a three-year-old in my Asbury preschool class. After visiting for a moment, I turned and walked down the hall toward the north door and out to the parking lot. My step was lighter than usual as I thought about the miracle of a child who had so quickly become a handsome, mature boy.

I stopped to think for a moment about her use of a big word and then reasoned she likely picks her clothes to wear, and at some time in the past her mom had said, “Those colors clash.”

Tuesdays, May 4-July 27 (will not meet June 15) 1:30-3:30 p.m. Room 1335 Instructor: Dewey Sherbon Cost: $5 No childcare
In a recent study, the Barna Research Group revealed the stunning statistic that only 9 percent of professing Christians have a biblical worldview. Because of this, today’s believers live very similarly to non-believers. We are, in short, losing our bearings as a people and a nation. To counter this slide within the body of Christ, Focus on the Family launched The Truth Project, “one of the most ambitious and powerful projects in the history of our ministry.” The Truth Project is a DVD-based small group curriculum comprised of 12 one-hour lessons taught by Dr. Del Tackett. This study is the starting point for looking at life from a biblical perspective. Each lesson discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life.
This 6-week course is designed to teach, encourage, and promote the memorization of God’s Word. Learn what the Bible Thursdays, June 3-July 15 (will not meet June 17) says about memorizing God’s Word as we examine the different 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Room 2820 learning styles, memory theories, and processes. These two concurrent 34-week courses are for adults wanting to study the whole Bible in order to learn what it means to be a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. No previous Bible knowledge required. Second half of the course continues in the Winter 2011 RoadMap semester, beginning in January. Those interested in participating in either Class A or Class B must attend only one 6:30 – 7:30 PM Orientation in the CLC to register. Orientation schedule:Tuesdays, July 27 or August 3, or Thursdays, July 29 or August 5.
In this biblical guide to authentic repentance and restoration, Beth examines why devoted followers of Jesus Christ can fall into the traps of Satan. Christians are still subject to Satan’s attacks. He is determined to disrupt the lives of believers, destroy their ministry, and steal their joy. Sadly, those who have “fallen” may not recognize the devil’s schemes until they have already been caught in a snare of defeat. This six-week Bible study is written in three parts. The first part is a warning to believers, while the second part shows women how to prepare for attacks by the Enemy. The third part is directed to those who have been snared by seduction, and compassionately points the way back to God. Please attend an orientation on Wednesday, May 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the CLC to get your book and sign up for your small group.
