to the ECC Tournament for the sixth straight year before falling in the finals. They posted a 25-25 overall record,14-13 mark in ECC action and included five AllConference players. A highlight of the season came postplay when junior pitcher, Bobby Lanigan was drafted 92nd overall by the Minnesota Twins, the highest draft pick in Adelphi history and the first since 1993. In 2007, Scala helped Adelphi to a record of 35-17, including an ECC regular season and tournament title. The Panthers earned their second trip in three years to the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional, placing third. The Panthers had two players earn All-America honors in outfielder Mike Testani and pitcher Mike Myers. Adelphi also swept the Player and Pitcher of the Year in the ECC as six players were selected to the all-conference team. Scala guided the Panthers to a 21-23 overall mark and a third seed in the ECC playoffs in 2006. He also coached six players to All-Conference honors and saw freshman Bobby Lanigan earn Rookie of The Year honors. In 2005 Scala steered Adelphi back to regional prominence, leading the Panthers to their first NCAA Division II Northeast Regional since 1999. Adelphi finished the season with a 25-19 record, earning Scala ECC Coach of the Year honors. In his first year Scala took over a team that had won just seven games the previous season and three in the conference. Scala immediately turned things around, guiding Adelphi to a 12 game improvement (19-22) in the win column and a return to the ECC Tournament with a 1010 conference mark. Since accepting the head coaching position, Scala has seen four players taken in the Major League Baseball draft and had six others sign professional free agent contracts. Bobby Lanigan was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the third round of the 2008 draft, Keith Couch was taken by the Boston Red Sox in the 13th round in 2010, Robert Nixon
was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 46th round in 2011 and Dillon McNamara was chosen by the New York Yankees in the 27th round of the 2013 MLB draft. Scala came to Adelphi with an impressive professional and collegiate career. Drafted in the sixth round by the Oakland A’s in 1976, he was acquired by the Yankees as the bullpen coach from 1978-1986. During his nine-year stint with the Yankees, he was a member of the 1978 World Championship and the 1981 American League Championship teams and worked with such legendary coaches as Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Gene Michael, Jeff Torborg and the late Dick Howser. From 1987-1990, he became the Advance Major League Scout and Special Assignment Scout of the Pittsburgh Pirates under Jim Leyland. In addition to maintaining his own baseball camps since 1990, he has served as director of many others, including the New York Mets camp and the Dave Winfield camp. A standout athlete in both football and baseball at St. Francis Prep, Scala played third base at St. John’s University from 1972-76. A collegiate third team AllAmerican and two-time ECAC All-Star, Scala posted the sixth-highest single season batting average in St. John’s history. A team captain, he batted .408 his senior year, good for 15th in the nation, and was named the team MVP. Scala also serves the Director for Athletic Development and has been instrumental is many large University projects, including the building of William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. Scala helped raise funds for the state-of-the-art baseball field which was opened in 2007 and continues to aid in sponsorship and field signage efforts. Scala has also taken on the duty of organizing the annual Fall Cocktail Reception, a trademark event put on by the Adelphi athletic department that has featured high-profile guests such as Willie Randolph, Goose Gossage, David Cone and Bucky Dent.

The Northeast-10 Conference The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The conference consists of 16 member institutions located throughout the Northeast in the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont.
Also during the 2011-12 academic year, Southern Connecticut’s Amanda Thomas won national championships in the 200 and 400 individual medleys, and for her efforts was named the 2012 NCAA Division II Women’s Swimmer of the Year. Southern Connecticut’s Nick Lebron (heptathlon) and American International’s Dominic Smith (400 meter dash) also claimed individual national titles at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The institutions that make up the Northeast-10 include Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.), American International College (Springfield, Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), Franklin Pierce University (Rindge, N.H.), Le Moyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), University of Massachusetts Lowell (Lowell, Mass.), Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.), University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), The College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.). The 16 member institutions are spread geographically from Syracuse, N.Y. to Waltham, Mass. and Colchester, Vt. to Garden City, N.Y.
In all, 59 different Northeast-10 Conference teams were selected to participate in NCAA Championship play during the 2011-12 academic year. The 59 programs represented 15 of the 16 conference institutions. From the field of play to inside the classroom, the Northeast-10 honored a number of student-athletes for their academic accomplishments. Over 50 percent of all conference student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA throughout the 2011-12 academic year and were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll as a result. Of the nearly 6,000 honor roll selections for the fall and spring, 244 earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. The conference also honored 260 student-athletes that excelled at a high level on the field and in the classroom as members of academic all-conference teams.
Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, Manchester, New Haven, Worcester, and New York City. The conference was proud to welcome the New Haven and Adelphi in its latest expansion, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic institutions.
Today’s Northeast-10 Conference remains focused on complementing the academic integrity and missions of its member institutions with a commitment to a broad-based championship program, as evidenced by the 23 sports the conference offers in championship play, the most such of any Division II conference.
The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasize the education, both on and off the field, of more than 6,000 student athletes. Among the many accomplishments of these institutions are NCAA Division II national championships in women’s basketball, women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s track and field, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving.
Through the establishment and enforcement of regulations, the conference aims to encourage policies that enable intercollegiate athletics programs to contribute to and be considered an integral part of the total educational offerings at our member institutions. The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of success including the growth from seven original member institutions to more than double its size 30 years later, the contention for and winning of multiple national championships, and the recognition of student-athlete performances off the field and in the classroom.
The conference is coming off a successful 201112 season, as the Saint Rose women’s soccer team claimed the first national championship in the school’s athletic history with a 2-1 victory over Grand Valley State in Pensacola, Fla. The UMass Lowell field hockey team also advanced to the national title game for the sixth time in seven seasons, while the Bentley women’s basketball and Stonehill men’s basketball teams both advanced to their respective NCAA Final Fours.

Adelphi Wins First Ne-10 Title In Program History In Rain-Shortened Championship OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - On May 15, 2011, Adelphi University won the 2011 Northeast-10 Conference Championship as the final series between the Panthers and Franklin Pierce University was unable to be played due to rainy conditions. The Panthers, who served as the host for the championship, won each of their games during the weekend, defeating Franklin Pierce 8-5 on Friday afternoon, and then knocking off Southern Connecticut State University 6-2 on Saturday. Adelphi received solid pitching performances during the weekend, with Robert Nixon throwing a complete game in the first win, and Mike Scudero going the distance in an impressive win over So. Connecticut, the regular season champions.
2011 NE-10 All-Championship Team Mike Scudero, Adelphi Omar Velazquez, Adelphi Anthony Zarrella, Adelphi Gregg Downing, Franklin Pierce Zach Mathieu, Franklin Pierce Matt Jacobs, UMass Lowell Tim Shea, So. Connecticut Most Valuable Player Omar Velazquez
Due to rain which fell throughout the evening on Saturday and into Sunday morning, the championship game(s) could not be played. Franklin Pierce knocked off So. Connecticut on Saturday afternoon to earn a berth into the NE-10 Championship, but would have had to defeat Adelphi in two straight games to earn the title.

Long Island There’s more than plenty to do on Long Island. Arts, culture, history, beaches, golf and shopping. There are five distinctive regions in Long Island North Shore, otherwise known as the Gold Coast, with dozens of historic sites dating back to colonial days and Gatsby-era mansions . South Shore, the Island’s spectator sports and entertainment center, with world-famous Jones and Fire Island Beaches, and home to the New York Islanders. Central Suffolk, with beautiful forests and natural
inlets, the world’s largest factory outlet center and a huge water park. North Fork, with an array of vineyards, waterfront ports and farm stands. South Fork, widely known as “The Hamptons,” with its pristine beaches and exclusive villages.
New York City It is impossible not to find something interesting to do and see in Manhattan. The most renowned of New York City’s five boroughs, Manhattan offers the best of everything— Broadway shows, concerts, sporting events, museums, shops, restaurants, parks, parades, cultural landmarks and one-of-a-kind neighborhoods. New York City is only 30 minutes from the Adelphi University Campus. On a trip to Manhattan, you could: • Head to Central Park to catch the finish of the New York City Marathon, or pack a picnic basket for lunch on the grass at Strawberry Fields; • Ring in the New Year by watching the famous ball drop in Times Square; • Catch a Tony Award-winning show or late-night TV favorite David Letterman on Broadway; • See the Knicks take the court or the Rangers hit the ice at historic Madison Square Garden;

Motamed Field In 2008, Adelphi University announced the naming of its athletic competition field, part of its new outdoor sports stadium, in recognition of the generous support and leadership of its Board of Trustees Chairman, Thomas F. Motamed, Class of 1971. Motamed Field was the site of the 2011 NCAA Division II and III women’s lacrosse championship. It also played host to the 2010, 2011, and 2014 Northeast-10 Women’s Lacrosse Championships and the 2011, 2012, and 2014 Northeast-10 Men’s Lacrosse Championship.
• Adjacent to the Motamed Field is a practice space. • The tennis courts are located just beyond this field and anchors the complex in one contiguous area. • All-weather surface material to allow for year-round practice and competition. • Four main light standards help illuminate the field for evening training and competition, as well as working media and game operations. The Outdoor Sports Complex features Motamed Field, which is the home for the Adelphi men’s and women’s soccer, lacrosse and field hockey programs.
• A heated/air-conditioned Press Box is located at the top of the stadium seats. Located midfield, the press box accommodates sports information, working media and game operations, which maintains the scoreboard and public address sound system. • The Panthers’ live in-game stats of soccer, lacrosse and field hockey events originates out of the press box. • Addition of a one-level parking structure for over 300 cars below the field.
