The Artic Stranger

Page 1

Knitting, sewing, embroidery, felt are traditional techniques which are still playing an essential role, they can mix with contemporary research where new technologies such as laser cutting or the widespread use of computers are experimented. Aspiration to modernity, however, does not hide the awareness that we should preserve what hundreds of populations have left. There is a strong feeling that all this can be eroded day by day. Like Artic glaciers, traditional techniques are likely to disappear. These are threats that do not seem to touch our daily lives, they are distant and elusive. The stranger who arrives on our doorsteps, however, reminds us that nothing is far way, that everything is linked, as in a thin plot connecting all. The Artic Stranger is a suggestion, an invitation to experience the possibility of fusion between old and new. Thus the past can become fully part of the present, not as a relic, but as consciousness of a more stable relationship between human beings, beauty and nature, as the need to build a more solid aesthetic.
