Entry 1 Women’s Wear Daily NARS Does Andy Warhol 8/24/2012 9/9/12 This fall NARS cosmetics will release an Andy Warhol inspired line that will sell exclusively at Sephora. This will be t h e Wa r h o l Fo u n d a t i o n s l a r g e s t collaboration to date. Those familiar with the line will be familiar with the already released Edie Eyeshadow and Chelsea Girls Lip Lacquer. These Warhol inspired products are in the permanent collection but now NARS consumers will get to see more items similar to these. Today Warhol is still one of the most well known figures in the pop art movement, even after his death over 20 years ago. So why does NARS want to put out a Warhol inspired line when they already have Warhol inspired products? Because this quote by Warhol inspired the brands founder and creative director, Francois Nars “If everybody’s not a beauty, then nobody is.” NARS wants to produce products that help make these words a reality. When creating the line NARS looked into Warhols love of makeup. With that, NARS put out the 29-piece collection which aims to capture the spirit of Warhol inspired from his many muses, including Edie Sedgewick, Debbie Harry and Candy Darling.

Entry 2 New York Times Top Balenciaga Designer Is Leaving the Company 11/5/12 Balenciaga’s top designer Nicolas Ghesquiere has announced that he is leaving the company. Francois-Henri Pinault, the companies chairman and chief executive, states that ending their partnership was a joint decision. Pinault praises the work the Ghesquiere’s work saying that his talent has enhanced Balenciaga and given the house unique and artistic aesthetics. Nicolas Ghesquiere joined Balenciaga at age 25. He excelled and was made creative director in 1997. During his time at the company he reinvented the image bringing it up to date. There are many questions after his departure such as who will replace him and where will he go from here? Bernard Arnault is chairman of various fashion houses under LVMH (Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton). He has tried to recruit him for positions in their brands such as Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, TAG Heuer and Veuve Clicquot. Rumor has it that he has been offered his own label under his name that would be overseen by one of Mr. Arnaults children who also work in the fashion industry. With the state of the economy branching off and creating his own brand would be a risky career move. With his talent and the way that he successfully transformed Balenciaga it would be smart for him to enter an already established fashion house and develop it the same way. He has created a solid following and many will follow him where ever he ends up. 7

Entry 3 Vogue The Skin You Are In: Sarah Mower On The Risks And Rewards Of Wearing Leather 12/1/2012 Mower talks about one time that she spoke about older women wearing leather as a fashion don’t, this remark was highly criticized causing her to come back to it time to time. Many have been known to associate the iconic black leather jackets with rock and roll and a tough personality however these days leather has transformed into one of the most beautiful textiles seen on the runways. Leather today is often used in very feminine silhouettes in dresses and skirts to give a new twist on a classic look. We can also

see leather used as a trim/ detail to add an edginess to a feminine piece.

Entry 4 Womens Trends As Seen In Fall 2012 Peplum Tops 9/28/12 Peplum tops have been seen on the runway for the past few seasons, transitioning easily from spring/summer to fall/winter. The look its self is flattering on many different body types and can transition from casual to dressy. The classic silhouette differs from color, pattern, texture, fabric, and sleeve lengths as the seasons change. For fall we not only see the peplum style in a basic top but also in jackets, dresses, and skirts. In 2011 we see peplums enter the industry seen mostly in formal wear. In 2012 the peplum style dominates as one of the most seen silhouettes. The look can be office appropriate for the office, a night out, or just a comfortable casual look.

Entry 5 Soft And Hard Line Merchandise 10/1/2012 The department store Sears sells a multitude of products ranging from clothing's, home decor, and kitchen appliances. While walking through the store one can see that there are some trends that dominate a variety of products. The first trend that I saw was warm dark tones. For example, the color maroon is big this season and when I was walking around the store I saw a variety of clothing's items that were in this color ranging from men’s, women's, and children's clothes. Bedding and rugs were also this color, even small kitchen appliances such as blenders and mixers were produced in this color! The second trend that I saw was faux fur. Faux fur is used in women's and juniors jackets, both as the whole textile on as a trim. faux fur also is used in home decor as throw blankets. Lastly we see faux fur in many accessories such as hats, mittens/ gloves, bags, and shoes. The third trend that I saw was metals. I saw metals in jewelry, appliances, and furniture. Stainless steel is a big common denominator in the products in the store. Many stoves, refrigerators, and microwaves come in this finish these days. The popularity of these appliances have inspired other home products to match this finish so that they can have a complete look about their home. Jewelry also comes in this finish because it isn't damages easily, its durability makes it a desirable material to use. 13

The fourth trend that I saw throughout the store was cotton. This fabric is popular not only through mens, children's and women's clothing but also in bed linens and towels. I think that cotton is a major fabric here because of its low price point and the consumer demographic. The fifth trend that I saw was animal print. Animal print was all over, it was a popular choice for junior and children's clothing, pillows, accessories, shoes, bedding, and even rugs!

Entry 6 WGSN Trend Reports 10/9/2012 The first trend that I reported on was the color maroon. We see deep reds become very popular on the runway this season. I am not surprised that it is also seen in other areas, such as home decor. I think that this color is timeless and that it makes sense that other industries picked up on it as well. The second trend that I reported on was faux fur, this also was seen on WGSN. Faux fur is popular in fall, I think that it gives a feeling of luxury and can be found almost anywhere, even at a low price point such as Sears. The third trend that I reported was stainless steel, this wasn’t really on WGSN because most of it was in accessories or appliances. I do think that it was probably a popular thing to use for hardware on an accessory for example. Its matte finnish made it very on trend. The fourth trend that I saw was cotton fabrics. I think that you will find cotton anywhere no matter what season because of its durability, simplicity, and low cost. The fifth trend that I reported on was animal prints. Animal prints are seen every season in some way shape or form. I saw a lot of animal prints done in faux fur which tied two trends into one. Looking at WGSN reinforced the trends that I saw by also showing the trends, mixing the trends together, and talking about how the various trends applied to each season. For example, deep reds are very reminiscent of the fall time making them a popular choice for a variety of products during the time that the weather changes. I think that it is interesting to see how trends flow through different departments throughout the store, this can help to give the store a cohesive image and tell the consumer what their kind of product is.

Entry 8 Global Trends 10/25/2012 BRAZIL: Looking through the various Brazilian designers we can see that bold colors and prints are a dominate trait about the clothes in this region. Due to the climate we also see many light weight fabrics and resort type pieces. Many of their pieces are locally sustained and produced. Each collection becomes less typical beach wear and more Brazilian sophisticated. I predict that the Brazilian economy is going to get a big boost with the olympic games that their fashion industry will become very popular and start making a name as being one of the top fashion capitals of the world, supplying a majority of the resort and summer wear around the world. I also think that the typical brazilian colors and patterns will establish themselves and become iconic. RUSSIA: Russian fashion is as bold, angular, and elegant as the people who wear it. I think that they have European and American looks integrated in how their pieces are put together. There are a variety of fabrics, colors, and textures that are different than the ones that you typically see for various seasons, for example they use rich dark colors year round. When looking at the runway shows I saw a lot of theatricality in the clothes and the way that the runway show was produced. Russian fashion week looks are bold, the fabrics are luxurious as well as the colors. I think that the luxury of Russian Fashion week could influence the other fashion weeks. I also predict that Russian style could possibly give 18

American or European fashion more of an edge due to the success that the Russians have with mixing fabrics, textures, and colors in a way that comes off very expensive way that I see them do effortlessly. I predict that in 2 years Russian fashion will impact the USA by developing the Americans fabric choices making them more luxurious bringing that theatricality to other fashion weeks. JAPAN: Japanese style influences the world all the time. Weather its the way that they construct their clothes, their fabric manipulations or even the playful way that they pair pieces together that. The way that they emulate western fashion isn't successful in my opinion. We see on the runways that the Japanese produce beautiful and intricate pieces of clothes that are works of art. I think that there is already a lot of Japanese influence in western clothing and it only keeps growing. I predict that with the growing popularity of Japanese culture that Japanese fashion will become more dominant in the clothes that

Americans wear. In 2 years I think that fabric manipulation such as pleats or a type of surface treatment will emerge that will take the Americans by surprise.

Entry 9 Visual Displays 9/31/2012 & In Stillwater, MN, I visited a small boutique downtown. I thought that this store was merchandised really well. One thing that I thought made the store look interesting was that all of the c l o t h e s we r e organized by color. There was one long rack that looked like a r a i n b o w, i t caught your eye from outside of the store making a consumer curious what was inside. Another location that I visited and found not only visually stunning but inspiring was the furniture store Luminaire. This store supplies very simple minimalistic furniture that is set up in a way. In this particular display they created a very comfortable room that has a cozy atmosphere about it even though there were no walls and it was in the middle of the show room.

Entry 10 Influence From A New Movie: Anna Karenina 10/23/2012 The film Anna Karenina dates back to the 19th century. Costume designers interpreted a 1870 Russian style for this film adaptation of the classic novel to recreate what actual looks of this time would be. These costumes capture the spirit and the period. Each character had a different silhouette that showed their social standing, gender, etc. These lavish dresses demonstrate Russian aristocracy in a way that someone watching can easily understand without knowing about how the Russians dressed. If I had to describe the costuming I would say that it is reminiscent of 1950s couture, the garments have a strong silhouette. I think that these clothes will start trends that modernize 19th century Russian dress. I envision elaborate gown with deep colors that transform into easy day to night pieces.

Entry 11 Designer Collections: Kanye West Kanye West Ready-to-Wear Spring / Summer 2012 These designs are quite high-end to me, at first I was unsure as to what Kanye West could offer the fashion industry but his collection was interesting and innovative. I think that high end department store clients would be interested in his clothing. I think that this particular design is interesting because he used white on white. I think the asymmetrical hemline on the skirt is visually appealing. I like the laid back aspect of this outfit as well, I think it could easily be dressed up or down.

Entry 12 Fashion Jobs

Fashion Designer: A fashion designer is someone who is hands on while creating original clothing designs. They are the ones who physically sketch designs, select colors and fabrics, and who is in charge of making decisions on what the final outcome looks like. This person in the head creative mind that fuels the company to produce their vision.

Fashion Buyer: A buyer is someone who decides what products will be stocked in a retail store based on his or her knowledge of what is popular and on trend. This person has to be able to understand the trend market so they are always buying products that will satisfy the consumer and keep the store in business. This person is able to know what the consumer wants before it is available

Product Development Manager: Someone who knows both the design and retail aspects of the industry and can help guide those to create products that will sell and fit the needs of the consumer. This person also oversees the trend and product distribution to monitor and research how things do in retail stores so they can help develop products to be the must successful that they can be.

Entry 13 Fashion Don’ts!

1.Tights are not pants. Tights are made of a very sheer material that is mainly used as a layer under another piece of clothing, not by any means to be worn alone as pants. If something is created as a layering tool to be modest or keep warm one should not disregard the main purpose of that item.

2.Socks and sandals. I never understood why someone would pair these two, if you don't want your feet exposed don't wear sandals. You never see anyone pulling this look off. It looks touristy or like an old man. Pick one or the other.

24

3.Pants that are too tight and shirts that are too small. I always felt self conscious for those people who walked around with their muffin top hanging out. Clothes are meant to fit you, if you have to squeeze into them I bet they are too small. If it takes a lot of work to get your clothes on your body, you have to disregard the tag and go up a size. You will probably be a lot more comfortable and you will look better.

4.Head to toe print. There are very few circumstances that I can think of that would call for one to wear head to toe print. Less is more. Most of the time a head to toe print will come off tacky or busy and land you on the worst dressed list. I think a print is best worn as either the main focus with simple accessories or done in small doses that only work to enhance the look. Unless it is halloween you should refrain from dressing like an animal.

25

Entry 14 Possible Career Opportunities

Creative Director: I am interested in the creative aspect of the industry without necessarily being the one who brings the idea to life. I would love to work with others to create products that we thought would be profitable in retail situations. Also I am interested in working in teams, not only in product development but in stores and online.

Company Branding: I find it interesting knowing what a company believes in and how they want others to perceive them. I think that it would be interesting learning how to make a company grow and become successful working with others in the industry to get your name out their and create a presence.

A Stylist: I don’t think that I would do this as a career but I think that working with people to create an image for themselves that makes them feel confident is a powerful thing. I would love to be a part of a styling company or business at some point in my career. I think that this job would be a good fit for me because I can work well with people and understand what their needs may be and how their closet does or does not fit that and work to adjust it the way that they need.
