FROM THE EDITORS One thing we are not gonna do is go on and on about COVID. We'll just say, get the vaccine so we can get this shit over with. And if you don't want to, please stop reading. This ain't for you. Now, on to something much more important: celebrating us. We've been at this now for 10 years. The guide started as a lark, an expansion of two of the most prestigious beer blogs in Austin. Luckily we live in a city where this type of ridiculous activity is encouraged and can thrive. We probably could have made this our full time gig if we wanted, but maybe because we are some sort of hybrid of Gen X'ers and Millenials, we were too lazy or felt too inadequate to make that kind of move. Nevertheless, we soldiered on and this is our 28th mag! One thing you might notice about this issue is the change up in the layout of the brewery listings in the back. Instead of grouping them into geographical sections, we jammed them all together into an alphabetical mega list. Don't worry, we kept the maps. We know everyone loves them. Also in this issue, you'll learn all about this city's culture of coopetition (p.30). No, that's not a typo. Austin is a soccer city now, in case you missed that. To get a taste of the action we beer and loathed our way to and through a recent Austin FC match (p.36). Lucky for us, we saw them actually score some goals and win. We checked in with breweries surrounding the stadium as well to see how fútbol fever has affected them (p.08). For a multitude of excuses, it is hard for us to make it to every new brewery that opens. This issue we did our best to rectify that situation (p.22). Maybe we should get some interns. We also spent some quality time with Chad at Red Horn to hear about their newest location and things to come (p.16) and Caroline Wallace dropped in to school us on all things Texas Craft Brewers Guild (p.12). Lastly, we checked in with our dude Brian and his pony-turned-coffee trailer. Get buzzed (p.72). Thanks for reading and partying with us over the last decade. Here's to 10 MORE YEARS... maybe. –AC

NEWS & BREWMORS

This is the News Oof. A lot has happened since we last published news. Putting a whole year’s worth into this issue is daunting. We’ll try to remember what we can and hit the high (and low) points. Sorry if we forgot you, hopefully we at least shared something on Twitter. NEW STUFF We’ve welcomed a brewery or two since last fall. Some are highlighted in a feature later in the book, but here’s a quick roundup of ‘em all, in no particular order. Not long after our last issue came out Meanwhile opened with coffee, seltzer (and seltzer cocktails), food trucks, soccer field, playground, and concert stage. Oh, and beer. Vacancy doubled the number of breweries on St. Elmo when they swung their doors open this spring. Dripping Springs is fl anked by two new breweries, Fitzhugh Brewing (on you know where) to the north and Ghost Note to the south of RR 12. Suds Monkey is still in Dripping but

moved operations, reopening with a much larger taproom. Hopefully, the third time is a charm in Pflugerville as Willard's opened in the former Rogness and Flying Man space with beer and a slew of seltzers. Lockhart has a brewery yet again with the opening of Hawkins Farmhouse Ales. Round Rock has a new brewery and

Austin FC pens deal with Austin Beer Guide, making them the official media sponsor of the Austin Craft Beer Soccer League, with matches to take place every weekend at Meanwhile Brewing Co.

Newly formed Save Pinthouse Now falls short of signatures needed to put a measure on the next ballot that would require Pinthouse Brewing to serve pizza. Beer influencers find new revenue streams through the new subscription service OnlyCans. Starbase Brewing, the “Official Beer of Mars” set to open in former Orf spot. Wait, we’re being told this is real news.

Despite pleas from their head brewer and ABG to rebrand Oddwood Ales to Oddwood Lagers, a compromise it met with Oddwood Brewing. Jester King begins offering chartered helicopter rides from their recently opened Jester King Inn to Austin FC home matches, making them the newest member of the North Austin Brewery District. To encourage vaccinations among beer fans, Thirsty Planet offers case of beer in exchange for vax shots, proving more succesful than Draught House's Growlers for Guns promo from 10 years ago.

NEWS CONTINUED . . . restaurant with Irish-inspired Cork & Barrel off 79. CLOSED STUFF As 2020 came to a close, so did Hops and Grain (at least for now). After nearly 10 years, they closed their original taproom at the end of 6th St. At the time of closing they mentioned you would see products on the shelves in 2021, but we are yet to grab a sixer of Zoe. We will make a quick editors’ note that we personally appreciate Josh Hare’s support of the Guide, long before his doors were ever open, and years of hospitality, as well as the endless employees we friended. Roll on, Josh. Round Rock lost a brewery with the closing of Compadre this May after a three-year run in the former Idle Vine space. ORF! closed this summer, but dammit, he did it for a few years! Starbase Brewing is moving into the space.

some non-distro beers? Our kids are older and annoying on the drive out there. MOVING STUFF Hi Sign will be moving from its current location to a larger and more accessible spot just two miles closer into town at 730 Shady Lane sometime in the spring of 2022. The building has some history, once serving as a Shiner distribution center and then Hill Country Brewing & Bottling. SILVER CELEBRATION Everyone has celebrated an anniversary since our last issue. Congrats to all of you. But, 25 years is a pretty big deal so special shout out to Real Ale. Go party with them on September 18 in Blanco, it’s always a rad time. We included you in our first issue 10 years ago and have you solely to blame for us expanding to wrap in the greater Austin/ Hill Country. TEXAS CRAFT BREWERS FEST RETURNS TCBF is back, baby! People are ready to party, as evident by the less-than-onehour VIP sellout for this year’s fest. Have no worries though, you can still snag a regular ticket and try beers from around the state and be reminded of how awesome and good we have it with Austin beer.

MORE STUFF Second locations are so hot right now. Red Horn opened up their new brewery/ roastery/taco place in Cedar Park off Scottsdale Road (read more in this issue’s Over a Pint on p.16). Last Stand’s in-town taproom on way South Congress (read more on p.22). Pinthouse Brewing, the brewery’s fourth location, is now open off Ben White just east of 35. There is really only one thing you need to know before you go: there's no pizza. The location is more of a taproom than brew pub vibe with salads, snacks, and sandwiches. Lazarus is under construction on a second location off Airport Blvd at the old I Luv Video/Coldtown Theater location. Family Business’ in-town location at the St. Elmo Public Market is no longer a go, sadly. Nate, if you are reading this can you bring us

ASK A BREWER

Major Leagues

SOCCER MATCHES ARE SHORT, SO THEY DON'T GIVE YOU A LOT OF TIME FOR BEER. Luckily there are plenty of nearby breweries to hit up before watching the Austin FC do their thing. We checked in with a few.

Have you brewed anything special for game (sorry, match) days? Anything green (sorry, verde)? MIKE FOSTER 4th Tap Brewing Co-op We just brewed “Stuuuuv!” It’s not green. SEAN FARMER Adelbert’s Brewery We have been brewing our Mexican lager ¡Dale! in honor of Austin FC for a while now. The light, crisp, and clean flavor has made it a favorite among supporters and patrons alike. In addition to that, we also participated in the Los Verdes Brewery Collaboration in which we all made our own versions of an Extra Pale Ale. Unfortunately, our stocks of that beer sold out rather quickly. WILL GOLDEN Austin Beerworks We have worked with both fan clubs to make special release cans. Los Verdes we made a single 16oz can for the first game. Austin Anthem we made a series of cans for all the home matches featuring both teams. DAYTONA CAMPS Celis Brewery Our collab pale ale for Los Verdes is a double dry hopped version. If the fans want an extra kick, we got green food coloring in the back. BEN SABEL Circle Brewing Co. You bet! We partnered up with Austin Anthem, one of the main supporters groups for

ABG_Summer2021.indd 8

the team, and created Austin Anthem Ale, a Matchday Golden Ale available in cans and on draft. We are also doing cask versions of the Verde Hasta la Muerte Pale Ale in partnership with Los Verdes, another supporters group. JOHN STAPLES Fairweather Cider Co. Yeah. We made a thing. It’s also green. It’s verde in Spanish. It’s called POWERFADE and it is a frozen cider-based cocktail and it fucking rips. ALEX LIMON Hopsquad Brewing Co. We’ve brewed a few soccer, sorry Futbol inspired beers. Our Zapatista Mexican Lager, is reminiscent of our own experiences getting plastered on lagers at soccer games in Mexico. The other has been our collab with Los Verdes, Verde Hasta La Muerte Pale Ale, which has been really fun to do. We’ve brewed it twice with a bunch of different hops like Strata, Huell Melon, Lotus, Haullertau Blanc, Chinook. Probably gonna try out some Simcoe, Hbc 472 and Liberty for next one. Will you be showing the matches live at your brewery? JOHN STECKER 4th Tap Brewing Co-op Yes. SEAN FARMER Adelbert’s Brewery We show every game (with audio) whether it is a home or away game. We like to give supporters a more relaxed environment to enjoy the game

with family and friends, so we focus more on having an enjoyable and chill atmosphere over throwing lavish parties. WILL GOLDEN Austin Beerworks Si, we cleaned up and brought our original taproom back online as the Verde Room for viewing matches. DAYTONA CAMPS Celis Brewery We are showing all games with sound on our 3 TVs. BEN SABEL Circle Brewing Co. Yes, we’ll have every match on, with sound, in the taproom and for big matches will have a large LED screen in the parking lot. JOHN STAPLES Fairweather Cider Co. Yes we show the games with audio on a giant ass projector that we have. ALEX LIMON Hopsquad Brewing Co. Yeah, we’ve always been soccer fans and have always liked the idea of mimicking the atmosphere we grew up around. Roar of the stadium in the background, surrounded by awesome passionate fans and great beer and tacos in hand? Yes please. How big is your TV/screen for live viewing of matches? MIKE FOSTER 4th Tap Brewing Co-op In actual inches or internet inches?

SEAN FARMER Adelbert’s Brewery Our largest right now is about 120” and can be viewed from anywhere in the taproom, and even viewed through the glass doors of our patio. We also have several other screens spread around the taproom to make sure no one misses anything.

WILL GOLDEN Austin Beerworks I have not and also request the contact of whoever is giving out the hook-up!

MICHAEL GRAHAM Austin Beerworks Roughly 1800mm (soccer is an international sport so I assumed you wanted metric).

BEN SABEL Circle Brewing Co. Ha, no, we did not. But, Austin Anthem has a great network of members that can probably connect you with some Supporters tix, if you’re looking.

DAYTONA CAMPS Celis Brewery We’ve got 3 80” TVs in the taproom. Our beer garden that is about to open will have bigger viewing options—more to come! BEN SABEL Circle Brewing Co. 20ft?! Plus multiple TVs throughout the taproom. JOHN STAPLES Fairweather Cider Co. Fucking huge. ALEX LIMON Hopsquad Brewing Co. We have a 12ft screen with a projector in the taproom, an outdoor 10ft LED screen we rent from Lara Productions every match day and a couple of TVs in the taproom we only turn on during match days.

DAYTONA CAMPS Celis Brewery No, not yet! Would love some—send me that contact!

JOHN STAPLES Fairweather Cider Co. No, also HMU if you get free stuff. ALEX LIMON Hopsquad Brewing Co. We bought season tickets early on, we spread the love to the entire staff and raffle some off to raise money for some charities. Most recently Out Youth. We did get a chance to tour the stadium before it opened and shotgunned some Zapatista on the pitch while the tour guide turned a blind eye which was dope. What is the estimated increase in revenue from match day tap room sales?

Did you get free tickets or swag from Austin FC? If so, can we have that contact?

MIKE FOSTER 4th Tap Brewing Co-op The real increase is the revenue in your heart.

JOHN STECKER 4th Tap Brewing Co-op We totally got a sweet flag. And a number of scarves. For Summer.

SEAN FARMER Adelbert’s Brewery About $3.50. In seriousness though we are seeing an acceptable increase in revenue.

SEAN FARMER Adelbert’s Brewery I have several staff who would love if this was the case.

MICHAEL GRAHAM Austin Beerworks We’re far enough away from the stadium that we don’t get swamped for the pre- and post-match crowds, but we definitely see a nice bump

ABG_Summer2021.indd 10

since there’s so much free parking in our area. DAYTONA CAMPS Celis Brewery It seems like a 50% increase on match days and rising.

JOHN STAPLES Fairweather Cider Co. Depending on the day 50–100% due to our proximity to the stadium.

C

ALEX LIMON Hopsquad Brewing Co. Substantial. What pro sport do you want to see next come to Austin? JOHN STECKER 4th Tap Brewing Co-op Kubb. SEAN FARMER Adelbert’s Brewery Rugby. MICHAEL GRAHAM Austin Beerworks Affordable housing. WILL GOLDEN Austin Beerworks Gelande Quaffing! DAYTONA CAMPS Celis Brewery Let’s put that F1 stadium to work—a racing team would be incredible to watch. BEN SABEL Circle Brewing Co. Women’s Soccer. JOHN STAPLES Fairweather Cider Co. Sports where Marijuana isn’t considered a banned substance. A ALEX LIMON Hopsquad Brewing Co. One of our bartenders has turn me on to Footy or Australian rules football. That shit gets intense. Also Cheese Rolling, it’s horrifically awesome to watch.

BREWER’S BRAIN

Caroline Wallace ON MARCH 11, 2020 I WAS AT FREETAIL Brewing Company’s production facility in San Antonio with a few dozen Texas Craft Brewers Guild members. We were gathered to brew the souvenir symposium beer for the Craft Brewers Conference® & BrewExpo America® (also known as CBC) which was set to take place in San Antonio the following month. The American brewing industry’s largest conference and trade show coming to Texas for the first time in 13 years was a big deal, one we Texans had many best-laid plans and lofty expectations for. But it was hard to ignore the elephant in the room. South by Southwest announced its cancellation five days earlier. The Houston Rodeo called it quits that very morning. As we mingled and bumped elbows on the production floor, speculation that CBC could be next was muttered from more than one pair of yet-to-be-masked lips. Still, the yeast didn’t understand we were on the cusp of unprecedented times™, so if the official word was that CBC was still happening, it was time to brew this beer. One-by-one brewers lined up to add some ceremonial hops to the recipe. We snapped a group photo. I drove back to Austin with some naive optimism still intact that the conference would go on as planned—that life would go on as planned. By the next evening the White House suspended air travel from Europe, the NBA cancelled the remainder of its season, American treasure Tom Hanks tested positive for COVID, and I made a late-night run to my heavily pillaged neighborhood H-E-B to try and secure a few groceries before the next morning’s inevitable apocalyptic scene. Oh yeah, and CBC was cancelled. In those 36 hours everything changed for our country, and in the week that followed, everything would change for the Texas craft brewing industry. Some breweries, like my neighborhood Oddwood Ales, closed down their taprooms preemptively—shifting to beer-to-go only models. On March 17 that became the law of the land in Austin when Mayor Steve Adler ordered all restaurants, bars, and brewery taprooms to shift to take-out only effective at Noon that same day. The hospitality industry scrambled. On March 19 Governor Abbott signed an executive order closing things down statewide and I watched as breweries in other parts of the state that had not yet shutdown scrambled too. When I think about that week and how it changed our industry, I can’t help but think of another memory—one that came nine months earlier inside the taproom at Austin

ABG_Summer2021.indd 12

Beerworks and the last time that something Governor Abbott signed had a major impact on craft brewers. There, we gathered for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission Sunset Bill signing ceremony—an important piece of legislation making several modernizations to the TABC—but the headline grabbing piece was Representative Eddie Rodriguez’s historic amendment which made Texas the final state in the country to legalize Beer-To-Go sales from manufacturing craft breweries. The Guild had been fighting for Beer-To-Go for more than a decade, and victory came just in time it seemed, because now, as COVID hit, Beer-To-Go was the thing keeping many breweries afloat. What came next for the Texas Craft Brewers Guild was the Great Texas Beer Run, the Save Texas Breweries campaign, the Texas Brewery Passport™ app, and pushing the Governor’s Office for breweries to get temporary rights to deliver and ship beer direct-to-consumer (and the beer community pushed too—contributing 21,000 signatures to our online petition and sending thousands of emails to Abbott’s inbox). As a 501(c) (6) non-profit trade association we rely heavily on events like our annual Texas Craft Brewers Festival and our educational conferences—so now there was also the task of figuring out how to transition to virtual events on top of day-to-day continuing operations during a Global Pandemic. And there was lots and lots of resource gathering and regular “COVID-19 Update” emails—chock full of the acronyms of the time—EIDL (Economic

Injury Disaster Loan), PPP (Paycheck Protection Program), ERC (Employee Retention Credit) and CBMTRA (Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act), to name a few. Zoom sessions. Conference calls. Email threads. From the Governor’s office, to TABC, to state legislators, to congressional offices, to the Brewers Association, to our fellow state brewers guilds, we leaned on each in our updates and advocacy. What came next for each brewery was the task of rapidly pivoting business and service models. Beer-to-go drive-thru lanes and curbside pickup zones were propped up overnight complete with QR codes and online ordering. Every Crowler machine worked overtime as an impending aluminum can shortage loomed. There was a ton of ingenuity, but there was also a lot of fear and uncertainty. Countless barrels of beer sat spoiling in fermentors and kegs across the country. Small brewery owners grappled with the prospect of losing the dreams they worked so hard to build. Workers, jugging the risk of losing their livelihoods with maintaining their own health and safety, masked up, subjected themselves to frequent temperature checks and nasal swabs, and kept going out into this unnerving new world every day while many of us had the privilege of living our lives at home through Zoom. Another executive order in May meant breweries could re-open, but by June yet another meant any brewery that had historically been a “51%” alcohol establishment was now known as a bar and was forced to re-close. Suddenly a red or blue sign that had long hung on a businesses’ doors to denote whether handguns (yes, handguns) were permitted on the premises became a precedent for a decree holding each brewery’s fate—only in Texas. Creative strategies for Beer Garden Autonomous Zones (unpermitted outdoor patios adjacent to the brewery where customers could enjoy their beer-to-go) emerged only to be squashed as soon as they were pseudosanctioned. Eventually enough hoops were jumped through, enough Chips & Salsa & Beer Combos were sold to transform a “bar” into a “restaurant” in the eyes of the state of Texas, and breweries began the slow, slow march to resuming normal operations—all while becoming the unwitting frontline for mask enforcement and enduring the difficult customer interactions that came with it. unprecedented winter storm and infrastructure failure which saw Texas brewers stepping up to provide clean drinking water for animal shelters, apartment complexes, college campuses, senior living facilities, and anyone who showed up at the taproom with a spare container. And, sadly, as a beer community we lost some beloved Austin institutions—some a part of our lives for many years, some relatively new and gone too soon. North by Northwest. Skull Mechanix. Brewers Table. Hops & Grain. The list goes on. Each place a piece of our community packed full with past memories of beers drank and merriment made. As I write this, there are growing concerns about the emergence of the Delta variant, and it’s clear we’re not totally post-COVID. Things are not back to normal just yet. But, the last few fully vaccinated months have brought some little doses of normality back—of small, old experiences that feel like new ones. I’ve seen movies at the Alamo Drafthouse again, eaten inside of restaurants, flew on an airplane, hugged my parents, and bellied up to the bar at my local breweries. You know, normal stuff. (I’ve also cheered on Austin FC while drinking a Pearl Snap in a stadium with 20,000+ fellow humans, which was a whole new experience, but one that’s quickly becoming part of the fabric of Austin.) And the beer industry is starting to feel a little more normal too. In midJuly we had the chance to gather back together in person in Denton, TX for the Guild’s summer conference and trade show, the Education & Safety Summit. As our first in-person conference—really our first major in-person event since that fateful brew day at Freetail back in March of 2020—it was incredible to reconnect. And as we’ve moved past red and blue guns signs and ever-changing executive orders, the Guild has gotten back into good old fashioned regulatory advocacy mode, providing continued input as TABC moves to implement the final rounds of changes to come out of the 2019 Sunset bill—removing the archaic distinction between “beer” and “ale” in our alcoholic beverage code, consolidating licenses and permits, and making some very necessary technology upgrades to alleviate tediously long approval times. Overall, one of the best normal things about where we’re at right now is the simple pleasure of having a beer with friends again. And on October 23 I’m looking forward to doing just that—with a few thousand friends— at the Texas Craft Brewers Festival. OVER A PINT

Chad Misner of Red Horn Coffee House and Brewing ON THE MORNING OF JULY 5 WE HOPPED IN THE CAR AND HEADED UP 183 TO THE NEW RED HORN COFFEE HOUSE AND BREWING CO. OFF SCOTTSDALE DR. AT THE CEDAR PARK AND LEANDER CITY LINES. WHEN WE MET CHAD MISNER, ONE OF THE FOUR OWNERS AND ALL THINGS OPERATIONS GUY, WE TOLD HIM NO MATTER HOW THINGS WENT, THIS PRENOON OVER A PINT WOULD EASILY BE THE EARLIEST ON RECORD. WE GRABBED SOME CORTADOS AND TOURED THE SPACE WHERE WE RAN INTO BREWER/ OWNER ZACK GARNER IN THE BAND-NEW, ALMOST ONLINE BREWHOUSE. WE THEN GRABBED SOME BEERS AND MADE OUR WAY INTO THE OFFICE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THEIR LATEST ENDEAVOR. EDITED FOR CLARITY AND LENGTH.

Austin Beer Guide: So we're here pre-noon with Chad Misner, one of the four owners of Red Horn Roastery and Brewery, Brewing and Roaster… Chad Misner: Brewery and Roastery, Coffee House and Brewing Co….everything. That’s been a story in and of itself on the branding Whatever it is, we’re here. Cheers. We just finished walking around the new space out here off Scottsdale and 183a. So Red Horn's been around six years now? Yeah, March 2015 And we're coming out here because we're not at the, what do you call the original location? We've been calling it the OG. Referring to it in context as Parmer and 1431. Yeah, but the OG, and we're trying to figure out a name for this one. It hasn't really come naturally. We keep saying the mothership but we’re not even brewing beer and roasting coffee out here yet so it may not be the mothership yet.

ABG_Summer2021.indd 16

But it is shiny and new. When did you open this one? This one opened two weeks ago, actually today. So whatever that would have been (June 21). We did a Monday night friends and family, invite-only little stress test. And everyone we were expecting showed up within a 15-minute window and everybody was in the weeds for an hour, the kitchen and the bar staff. But it is a great little way to say, “Hey here's what potentially could happen if we can grow this thing and be busy.” And it's not a surprise that you have a second location. I think it’s not a great kept secret that for a long time that you were looking at opening something. Can you kind of talk about that journey? A lot of people say they're disappointed. “I wanted a Red Horn South. I want Red Horn Central.” They wanted one in their neighborhood and you ended up 10 minutes down the road. Yeah, well, if you go all the way back to the business plan John (Lamb) and I wrote seven years ago, the entire concept was to scale the company and to never just be the OG location. It was gonna be much bigger than what it was. So I guess maybe two years into opening that concept we started browsing and we looked at stuff downtown, we looked just south of the river, stuff in Georgetown, Hutto, kind of everywhere. And we just kept coming back to our own community and our

neighborhood, which is Cedar Park. We’ve gone through a lot of paperwork and almost signed the dotted line on a handful of leases. And for whatever reason, you know, backed out at the last minute or that economics just didn't work or timing didn't work out something didn't work out so we just kept pursuing without a great sense of urgency. We thought we would find the space when the time was right. And this location was actually behind another location that we almost committed to. And so we would see it every time we'd go check out that space and it kind of became plan B. And then the stars just started to align and we sign that lease and then a fucking pandemic happens and you’re trying to keep your dream and your business alive while planning to put your foot on the gas pedal when we come out of the pandemic. We knew there was going to be an opportunity where we weren't going to be in a pandemic for the rest of our lives, or maybe we will, I don't know. People are so gonna want caffeine and alcohol, that's it. I thought we'd be primed to be there and pounce on the market once things got back to normal. So, here we are. We should have been open, in a perfect world, probably this past April, three months ago, but it was two weeks ago. But yeah, here we are and the community seems to be treating us pretty good thus far. We haven't had an issue hiring folks and retaining folks and promoting folks that have been with us for a while to new positions. So things seem to be moving positively for us. I mean, surviving the pandemic alone with the original location is something I think to just hang your hat on for any business. Then to open this at the same time. Have you had time to even reflect on that or are you just still in churn and burn, get everything going mode. Yeah, I don't think I've had my full Zen moment yet. You know, just sitting here, like “holy shit” you know, at some point. This is that moment, take it in! At some point we’ll pat ourselves on the backs because yeah, it's been really hard. And that's not unique to us. It's been hard for everybody. Business owners, families, everybody. Can you talk about what you’re accomplishing with the new space? The flagship, the mothership, whatever you're calling it? Yeah, well on our glasses here, the beers were having, it says “Coffee, Beer and Good Vibes”. That's always kind of our focus. And what we're striving to do. And this concept, down Scottsdale drive, we've added a full

ABG_Summer2021.indd 18

taco concept, we partnered with taco Maya, which is a local food truck to operate the kitchen. So here, we're really focused on coffee beer, tacos, and good vibes. And with the underlining kind of goal of scaling everything. So we're going to bring the coffee roaster over here. That will provide coffee for both locations. And we'll ramp up some wholesale accounts and we have a pretty successful subscription online program, scale that up. And then definitely on the beer side, start ramping up from six, seven, eight-hundred barrels a year to hopefully over a couple of thousand and find a place for all that beer to go... packaging our mainstay products and getting into stores is a goal that we have on the calendar for happening very soon. And then certainly some draft accounts. Again, just more product out there. I think roughly speaking about 75% of our beer in the past has gone over our own bar so we don't distribute a lot of beer at all. This model will be significantly different. We'll be sending a lot, maybe closer to 50/50 or something like that and then once we get our feet beneath us here, we'll probably start looking for a third location. That's, that's what we do. You know, if you're not growing, you're dying. And with that third location, this will kind of be the hub and we'll be able to distribute the coffee, distribute the beer, maybe to just a non-production kind of a cafe space. Maybe do our own food. Maybe partner with another food vendor. No telling where that place will be.

“I’ h

You mentioned production, the brewhouse at the original occasion will remain in place. The brewhouse at Palmer, will remain in place. We're gonna take a couple of the cold side tanks away, bring them here. So production over there will drop a little bit, but severe our brewer over there, kind of let him do what we like to think Red Horn has always done. Have some of your, you know, your clean lagers, some really good IPAs, and some pastry stouts and imperial stouts, things like that, but then really just doing one-off crazy shit over there. Whether it's our Pop-Tart Ravioli. Our ghost pepper brown ale. Friday we're releasing Aloha Y'all Pina Colada milkshake IPA. We enjoy brewing stuff like that. You know, and pushing the limits on the brew side to see where we can stand out there. Seems to be a big enough market that's interested in those beers. So the third and fourth, whatever locations, those won't have brewing operations. Well, that's what we say for now. Do you see yourselves growing within this community or do you think, “Okay,

next time we really are gonna go a little beyond.” Or do you have no idea? Right now you’d probably get four different answers from the four-person ownership team. There's a selfish side to it, right? I live in Round Rock straight down 1431. John lives, probably equal distance, five to seven minutes away from both locations. Zack is an Austinite through and through. And then Marco (Leal), he's from the valley. He lives in Pflugerville. So three of the four of us are suburban, you know, family guys. And there's just a selfish component. I mean I don't want to drive to South Austin every day to launch a concept, at least at this phase in the company. Zack is all about it. He's ready to get an Austin location because that's his hometown you know. So yes, staying in the suburbs provides us the convenience of getting to and from work, being integrated into our community, easily popping over here with the family to just check on something. You know you need to go have a meeting... or drink 11:30 am beers with some homies, it makes it easy. So there's definitely that component, but sometimes we still pinch ourselves. It's hard to believe that people, and you mentioned it earlier, but people come to us directly like,” are you guys ready to come to South Austin?”. People are excited. So it doesn't seem like it would be a terrible play for the market. But at this point in the company, we kind of like it in our backyard. Plus doing business in the city of Cedar Park has been tremendous from the onset. There are so many people that live up here that lived in Austin proper at one point and they've gone up to the suburbs. So yeah, I don't know. Maybe we just have a little suburban niche, you know. On our tour, we saw some horizontal lagering tanks out there and got excited. Yeah I’m at that point in my beer drinking. Most of us probably always loved lagers, but I've gotten to the point where that's almost all I'm drinking right now is loggers. Just really nice clean loggers. When we were planning this, Zack really wanted those and that was an easy conversation. All four of us shared the same vision. I like to think our lagers are pretty solid. But, you know, now brewing on this brand new state-of-the-art 15 barrel brewhouse and getting into some horizontal tanks, it's pretty exciting, yeah? We probably won't do a whole lot of lagers at the old place but with those two that are here, we're pretty damn excited about if it goes as well as we're hoping. You know, the IPAs in the stouts, I mean those are popular, but at the end of the day the number of

ABG_Summer2021.indd 20

people that just appreciate and drink an approachable clean logger, those beers just fly and we love drinking them. So why not brew them? You guys do a lot with Austin breweries. Is that purposeful to keep the connection to Austin or does that just happen? Do you think it's important, as we put our marketing hat on for a minute? I think it's definitely important. But I say pretty candidly that's never been the driver, right? There are so many good people in this industry and I think you just find folks that are like-minded, whether it's in their business practices or their beer styles, or you just really look up to them, you know, like a Jester King, right? Getting invited into somebody's brewery, or having them up here, as you guys know is just a beer-drinking fest and we buy Torchy’s every time. Maybe we'll have to start buying our own tacos... But it's just a party. It's just a way to get everybody up on the brew deck for a couple of photo ops and otherwise just sit around and drink beers and shoot the shit So we’re gonna pause here to say Austin Beer Guide is always open for collaboration. You know how to find us if you want to collaborate with us.

We proceed to swap collaboration stories and get way off track So by the time this is published (September 28), or more likely by the time someone is actually reading this, you should have beer pouring that’s brewed here, or at least in the tanks. Yeah, three to four weeks from now. We’re hoping to be getting some of the first package stuff distributed Labor Day weekend. That’s kind of a goal that we had because you have a target, otherwise you just kind of float around. So we identified that as a target but there’s a lot of shit that has to line up between now and then. I'm not gonna be mad if that doesn't happen. Let me put my money on by the time you read this, you can go by here, maybe not in the market, and get something brewed on site. Okay, I gotta take a piss break... a coffee and a beer are running through me. Yeah, and we’re about to run out of beer. So this is how they work. We usually wrap these up as we're ready to refill. Is there anything you want to say? I appreciate you guys coming out and making a trip to South Dallas.

New2Us

I’m not sure if it is us getting comfortable in our old age, increased responsibilities, similar tastes, or the fact that we are blessed with a plethora of outstanding breweries within a very small radius of our Brentwood and Mueller neighborhoods (and even more just outside it), but we don’t get out like we used to. Rather I should say, we don’t get out to new places like we used to. It could also be they keep coming at a rapid pace and we are coming off a year where getting out beyond the comfort zone was not easy. So what’s the best way to break a habit and force our hand on adding in some new stops? A Beer Guide feature! In the return of the listicle, we present a roundup of “New to Us” breweries that have opened in the last 18ish months. But unlike those freelance hacks working remotely in Idaho, we got in the car (because most of these aren’t in town), visited the taprooms, had the beers, and snapped a few pics with our mobile phones. For some of you, these may be your new local, and for that, you are blessed. For more of you, they may be completely new. Hopefully, it will whet your palate or inspire you to venture out. And yes, this is not a complete list. We probably forgot someone (or they were out of our greater Austin radius). Plus there a few heavy hitters we have been talking about for years and have ‘grammed enough that you should know who they are (looking at you Hold Out, Meanwhile, and Beerburg). So here it are 11 new places to grab a pint. See, people can get unstuck from their ways. –JS

Does Fitzhugh Road need more beverage spots? For us central Austinites, maybe not (it’s a long and calculated drive back). But for those that have permanently migrated west or have more stamina than us (and a willing driver), bring it on. Like all Hill Country breweries, there are picnic tables under shady live oak trees, but the Joanna Gainesinspired white modern farmhouse taproom/brewery set Fitzhugh apart from some of its peers. So do a few of brewer Jonathon Rice’s unique beers, like an Ethiopian Tella and Zoigl Bavarian lager, that sit along a Kolsch, Hazy IPA, Blonde ale, and more. Rounding out the space is an in-house, smoked meat-heavy kitchen with snacks, sandwiches, and a kid’s menu to accompany the playscape out back.

HUMBLE PINT - 11880 Hero Way W Suite 208, Leander Within minutes of walking into Humble Pint, I texted a friend who lieaves in Cedar Park, “You should visit this.” It checks a lot of boxes. Clean pub, affable staff, approachable beers, games, in-house food (with kid’s’ menu), and more at the end of a strip center in Leander. “Founded” in 2017 but opened right as COVID rared up in April 2020, the Ppacific northwest-inspired brew pub began by offering to-go beers, pizza, sandwiches, and more. Owned and operated by the Wennstrom family, Humble Pint is a refreshing visit to the classics, like a NW Pale Ale, ESP, Hefeweizen, and Blonde. From our time there, they’re already gaining regulars. The only true Leander brewery, it should be on regular rotation for anyone who has retreated to the burbs, or definitely a stop for those making a crawl up north.

VACANCY BREWING - 415 E St Elmo Road 1-D2, Austin In town but south of the river and surrounded by some of our old staples, Vacancy is still a new detour for us. Across St Elmo Rd from The Yard in another row of industrial warehouse, Vacancy provides a small, bright, and Instagrammable taproom reminscent of Fairweather before they blew the walls out. Co-owners Sarah Hamza and Brett Watson have already created some fast-favorites with their core Lucille Sprakling Golden Ale and June Pilsner. Regulars will keep coming back with rotating taps including plenty of hoppy options (a Pale Ale along with West Coast, Hazy, and Juicy IPA and more lagers on our visit) and Trill Foods parked out front. Now you can bookend your Yard crawl with beer here and at St Elmo Brewing while grabbing some wine, coffee, saké, and whiskey in between.

Ghost Note diverts from the large and clean tap rooms going up at most new hill country breweries, and it works. With a quaint brewing barn fronted by a bar and friendly staff with a large covered patio, most of the picnic and adirondak seating is scattered amongst the oaks, stage, food truck, and requisite play scape. Another place Ghost Note diverted on our visit was with a low-fi 90s girl band rather than the usual folk/country/bluegrass. Brewer Tyrell Elliot is pumping out clean and approachable beers like a pils, classic IPA, and Saison while rotating things like a Rye Lager, fruited Sour, and Imperial Stout. Post up for the afternoon or add it to your next Dripping/Wimberley/Driftwood circuit.

FRONTYARD BREWING - 4514 Bob Wire Road, Spicewood Frontyard isn’t new, but a larger brewery with a proper taproom is. Originally located in a small warehouse on Cuernavaca Rd since 2018, the bright and outdoor-focused space in Spicewood just 10 minutes from the entrance to Pace Bend Park opened in October of 2020. Whether you live on the lake, are making a day trip, or are just breaking away from the campsite, there is a little something for everyone with a large family-friendly turf lawn, pickleball courts, food trucks, adjacent 5 Soul Wine Co. tasting room, hard seltzer cocktails, and slushes. Frontyard has expanded beyond its heavy-hitting higher abv original lineup of a 9.1% Rye IPA and Coffee Milk Stout with offerings like a Hazy IPA, Kolsch, and the locationally appropriate 4.3% Boat Beer.

LAST STAND SOCO - 7601 S Congress Avenue, Building 6, Austin How does 2015’s “Editors Pick: Best New Brewery” make this list? Because we go west less and now we just have to head to South (for us, way south) Congress to get a local taste and experience of this “early to Fitzhugh” brewery. The original location, with a small taproom, shaded garden, and separate brewing barn is not very big. This one is. And it offers a little bit of something for everyone:. Last Stand staples, like the Citra IPA, easydrinking lagers and ales, guest taps from friends, cider, wine and seltzer. Add in pizza from Southside Flying Pizza, an expansive air-conditioned space, and industrial bier garten with a stage for live music and you’ll have to work to find something you don’t like. Our hearts will always be with the OG, but our time and gas budget appreciate the second space.

CORK & BARREL CRAFT KITCHEN + MICROBREWERY 4000 E Palm Valley Boulevard, Round Rock Ever wanted to get the feeling of having a brew in a swanky ski resort mixed with an Irish pub? Well, Cork & Barrel in Round Rock awaits. Some serious cheese went into opening this place and it shows. Enjoy one of their “microbrews” inside, but don’t forget to check out the expansive backyard—you can sit inside a giant barrel! Foodwise, they call themselves a craft kitchen, which is a 2021 way of saying gastropub. They have small brew setup where they keep on three to four house beers on at all times, including Island Time juicy ipa and Black Labrador vanilla stout. They also offer 20+ guest beers to round out their beer program.

WILLARD’S BREWERY - 2400 Patterson Industrial Drive, Pflugerville Third times a charm? Let’s hope so for Willard’s, as they are the third brewery to have a go at this location (RIP to Rogness and Flying Man). They are doubling down, offering up freshly brewed beer and seltzer. We haven’t tried their seltzer, but their Forbidden Helles is good and their Fistful of Fury Hazy IPA is tasty and holds its own among the hazy bois in town. Go for the beer sure, but stay for the big ass fan cause that thing does wonders. As things cool off you might want to spend time outdoors though and they have plenty of seating on the patio to accommodate just that. While out there, snag a taco or two from Mojo food truck.

BARKING ARMADILLO BREWING 507 River Bend, Georgetown Barking Armadillo, which opened right at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, has everything you’d want in a local urban brewery, but in a SUBurban environment. Their parking lot patio is dotted with picnic tables with assorted shade structures, the perfect spot to sip on their Mexican-Style lager, El Guapodillo. Or you can hide from the sun inside the cool taproom and enjoy a Poolcrusher IPA with a side of tomfoolery on their standup arcade games. Make sure to grab some grub from one of the rotating food trucks on site.

HEDGEHOG BREWING - 3200 Woodall Drive C-1, Cedar Park If you dig through the ABG archives, you’ll see Hedgehog mentioned here and there for a while. After a few years of possible locations, crowdsourcing, and concepts, they landed in the still rural part of Cedar Park. As I pulled up it felt oddly familiar, and I soon recognized the original Twisted X spot (and after that Thousand Oaks). Founded by brothers Chris and Jonathan Harris, Hedgehog might best be known for their farmhouse ales, which you can find bottled around town, but a trip to the taproom also offers a variety of saisons, hoppy beers (hazy IPAs on our visit), and stouts. You’ll want to plan your trip around the weather as currently there is only outdoor seating with mobile ordering (use the restroom if you want to see the inner workings), but it is a nice detour from the new norm and trip down memory lane for those of us that remember when you could only drink in (or just outside) an industrial housed bootstrap brewery

SOUTHPAW BREWING, 2415 S Bell Boulevard, Cedar Park Southpaw opened in late summer 2020, but unfortunately had to close June and July of this year due to construction issues. The closure meant we were not able to make a visit, but they did thankfully fully reopen before we went to print. Sandwiched between Lakeline Boulevard and Avery Ranch Blvd and facing 183, Southpaw barely makes it past across the Cedar Park city line. Their current lineup is great for anyone looking to revisit the classics with a Pale Ale, Imperial Red, IPA, Hefeweizen, and Porter. A stop will be in order soon so native Orlandoan Aaron can grab a pint of Flordia Man, a “crushable" light ale.

The Heart and Soul of Austin’s Brewing Community

by Rob Hill “Then ask yourself, and yourself alone the question . . . Does this path have a heart? If it does, the path is good. If it doesn't, it is of no use." —Carlos Castañeda - The Teachings of Don Juan The craft brewing scene, in general, is a mostly congenial and collaborative one. But, like many things in Austin, there seems to be more at play, here, a something extra, over and above professional courtesy, or an expectation of something in return. Austin beer is undeniably great. But the heart, the love, are what sets it apart. “Austin is kind of over the top, and sets a standard that doesn’t exist anywhere else,” says Austin Russell, who owns Southern Heights Brewing with Chris Rich. “I have other friends that work in the brewing industry outside Austin and in other states, and they’re close, they help each other out, but I think people here actively go out of their way to see if you need anything. “People like me and other newcomers only know that that’s how it is and how it should be.” Sharing ingredients is a constant occurrence, Russell says. “It might be, ‘do you have 11 pounds of this, or a bag of this?’ I feel like that happens with all the brewers, to the point where I don’t even think about it anymore… Everyone asks each other for stuff, because things happen with inventory, where you need help, and people help each other out.” “Last month, I got yeast from Live Oak,” he recalls. “Made our first hefe with it. Texted a buddy, went over there, they filled up a brink of yeast that would’ve cost several hundred dollars if I was gonna buy it,

ABG_Summer2021.indd 30

gave me a beer there, and gave me a case of beer… I went to get several hundred dollars worth of yeast, for free, and they gave me a beer, and beer to-go. And that happens often.” A few years ago, Southern Heights didn’t even have to ask for a very special ingredient. In fact, they didn’t even really see it coming. Wet-hopping is a very special, and very expensive, thing. Most beers are brewed with pellet hops, which are made by grinding whole hop cones and pressing them into pellets. In wet-hopping, whole cones, whole buds, of hops are picked from their bines (not vines – hit that Wikipedia), in the morning, often in Washington or Oregon. They are flown, same-day, to the destination brewery, which immediately dumps them into the whirlpool. There are a couple of different types of waxy oils that shape the flavor in your beer – they can add bitterness, and/or lovely floral or herbal notes. With just-picked whole-cone hops, those oils are super-fresh, delivering beautiful aromas and flavors. But, the fresh cones, as well as the resulting brews, have a short life. At some point, Pinthouse Pizza got an incomplete shipment of these full-cone, fresh hops, and they couldn’t use them – they had to wait for another, complete shipment. “Jake [Passey], from Pinthouse, dropped off those hops to us. Out of the blue. Free of charge,” Russell remembers. “They needed to go to a home that day, needed to be used within a short amount of time. So, they just drove them over and gave them to us. That was amazing, because we definitely, at the time, could not

afford to buy those hops. So, we used them the next day. Pinthouse has a beer called Blind Jake, so we named ours ‘Kind Jake’, after Jacob.” That was Southern Heights’ first wethopped beer, a sort of test and rite of passage for any brewery making IPAs. Michael Doggett, of Red Horn Brewery, says that while he hasn’t worked outside of Austin, he agrees that there’s something different afoot here, and thinks there’s a pretty simple explanation. “It’s definitely a southern hospitality thing. You get folks from other places coming to Texas, and they see that people genuinely want to help, and it’s not about being nice to try to get a leg up or get anything back. Here, you’ll help each other out with hops or whatever until your shipment gets in, and hey, take this six-pack, too.” Russell agrees, adding a bit of geographical reasoning, as well. “I think it’s the proximity of the breweries in Austin. You can go to a city that has as many people and breweries as Austin, but they’re really spread out. Austin is still a big, small town – it still feels small to me, and I think the other breweries still feel the same way. So, you talk to each other, hang out with each other, ask each other for help, like you would if you were in a small town.” Doggett and Russell also have a pragmatic view when it comes to the question of competition. Austin calls it “coopetition,” and Doggett explains that, “we’re not fighting each other - we’re fighting bad beer.” Russell adds, “You kind of hold each other accountable, quality-wise. You talk

to other people in the industry, to see what they’re doing, you’re like, ‘man that beer was great, how are you doing that,’ and I don’t think anyone shares all their trade secrets, but they want your beer to be better, just like you want their beer to be better. Everyone wants everyone’s beer to be great because it only helps you, and everybody else. And it’s also the pride in the city, too.” But some communal desire for consistent and ubiquitous quality, a mutual self-interest, and a commitment to excellence are not enough to give a community a unique reputation for cooperation and to mark it as having a significant heart. Among the breweries, there’s a recurring theme of relationships, empathy, and caring. “Everyone that works at all the breweries, everyone knows each other,” says Russell. “Everyone is friends, and they want to help each other out because at the end of the day, you want them to succeed, and they want you to succeed, as well, so you work with each other and help each other out. What’s good for them is good for you, and vice versa.” Very often, those friendships and the goodwill manifest themselves in simple help. In fact, when I visited Russell at Southern Heights to talk about this article, I found a brewer from Lazarus and someone from 512 helping out in the brewery. “Yeah, those guys are just people I’ve known for a long time that have been at several breweries in Austin, and their background and pedigree is insane, and they just wanted to come and brew and help me out, and I was like, ‘yes, please!’” explains Rus-

sell. “It was a lot of fun, and now I’m going to go to one of their houses later today for a birthday party with their family. Like, you helped me brew yesterday, and now I’m going to go to your house and have brisket.” At a couple of points in another conversation with Russell at Lazarus Brewing (who, he appropriately points out, has helped him out multiple times, with things like a weirdsized clamp that once saved the day), he talked about how many people from Austin breweries had even helped in the planning and build-out of Southern Heights, an experience echoed by Grady Wright, of Brew and Brew and Holdout Brewing. “Ours was such a long journey that just about everyone in the city helped us out,” Grady says. We had a lack of experience, we were starting from complete scratch. Early on, we needed sanity checks on our numbers,” Wright says. “We had projections for volume per year, time lines equipment lead times, and buildout costs and feasibility. The guild forums helped, but there’s not a cookie-cutter way to do this so we needed some real-world Austin experience. “Josh Hare at Hops and Grain, we had a long relationship, We went to him with, ‘is it possible?’ and he was encouraging, and said, yes. I cold-called Joe Mohrfeld, at Pinthouse. He was busy on their meteoric rise, about five or six years ago, but he took the time to look at our plans, confirm that the number of seats and our costs were

We talked to Ryan from Pinthouse, that heads up their construction and buildout, and he helped round that budget out.” “Coopetition.” Maybe it’s the norm here because the Austin brewery pie is big enough to not begrudge someone a slice. But in the exploding brewery community of the last decade or so, brewers and employees have moved around. And while the business world is replete with non-compete agreements, in the Austin brewing community, breweries have been happy to see their employees, and other “competing” breweries, rise. As Holdout began its own entry into the Austin brewery scene, Brent “Schmitty” Sapstead, left his post as Head Brewer and Production Manager at Real Ale Brewing Company to come on board. Wright was amazed at “their overall positivity to lose a critical employee, then not think twice about helping out our project.” “Once Schmitty joined the project, Real Ale was very helpful,” Wright says. “They let us brew a collab on their pilot system, and they had a couple of facilities engineers that helped us get our on-site controls spec-ed and helped us connect a lot of the dots on our buildout.” Russell has been on the other side of that situation – he himself cut his teeth at Zilker Brewing Company, and their friendly relationship continues, and he and Marco Rodriguez, Zilker’s brewer, contact each other for help constantly. He jokes that the reaction of Austin breweries to employees leaving for another brewery is generally, “Oh, you’re taking our brewer? Cool. We’ll deliver him, what else do you need?” For so many local breweries, this special environment, this community, the “coopetition,” is what drew them to even exist. “I wouldn’t pick a different community,” says Wright. “It’s the one reason I’m in this at all. Just seeing the overall community caused me to leave the corporate world and set out on this crazy beer path. It’s woven into every thread of the Holdout story, going back to leaving my 9-to-5 job, and Brew and Brew, and the new brewery.” Russell agrees, to the point where he knows he’s locked into the brewing industry. “Breweries help each other out so much, to where if you ever left the industry, and you went to a different one, you might forget that’s how it is. It would be so confusing to me. I wouldn’t know how to be in another industry that didn’t have people

helping each other out all the time.” It‘s that specialness among the Austin brewing community that has always drawn me to it, as well. I’ve heard many of these stories and even watched them happen, for years. But one event demonstrated the full scope of it to me, and I think, to a lot of people. In 2017, the Austin brewing scene lost a friend. A loved one closely tied to at least three breweries but known by just about all breweries. I was lucky to know him. A kid with shining blue eyes, that worked at Austin Beerworks, and then Hops and Grain, that always made me, and escaped attorney and thed, and not like some outsider, some poseur. He always, every day, seemed excited to see me. One day, I was walking through the cellar at Austin Beerworks, and he yelled, “Hey, Rob, wanna hear something terrifying?” Knowing that it didn’t involve spiders, I acquiesced. He took me into the sound-shielded room that contained the centrifuge, which spins at 20,000 revolutions per minute, half the velocity of a mad neutron star, to push all the heavy material that he didn’t want out of the beer, to be flushed out, and down a pipe. It was a terrifying, amazing sound, the sound of jet engines and banshees, and the passion for making a beer taste and look a certain way, and he grinned at me the entire time, loving all of it, delighting in sharing it with me. After his passing, there were memori-

als, tributes, a bike ride, and get-togethers. I remember never feeling as loved by so many, never hugged so tight and almost desperately, an automatic greeting and display of love that hasn’t fallen off in the brewery community to this day. We knew and loved Peder, and we all became even more aware, more appreciative of our love for each other, and for the community. There is so much more to Austin breweries than just an industry – it’s a vast, extended family, that produces exceptional things out of conviction, and passion, and most importantly, first and last, love for the beer and for each other. It is the heart that inflects our experiences with the breweries in Austin. It is in Electric Jellyfish, Pearl Snap, Prodigal Pils, Carl, Fresh Kicks, Peak Season, and just about everything brewed in this city. Austin says, “maybe we’re still in, like, this ‘baby phase’, this fun phase.” But he’s hopeful that “in ten years, if Austin has quadrupled the number of breweries… this conversation is still relevant, and we’re still talking about everyone helping each other out.” Beer is but a dumb thing. It is water, with some sugar and yeast and hops. A mindless thing, unimbued with a soul at its inception. But it can have a heart, and in Austin, it does. Good beer is a recipe. Great beer, the magic, comes from the humanity behind it all, a magic that lives here in spades, borne of the goodness of the humans behind it. Behind every beer you love, especially here, there are people and there is love.

BEER & LOATHING

Green Beer Hooligans I think it would be safe to call us casual soccer fans, but a crawl around the breweries surrounding Q2 during an Austin FC home game was ripe for a Beer and Loathing. Our original intent was to hit every brewery in the North Austin Brewery District for some prematch beers coupled with a few taproom watch parties, but days before the match against the Portland Timbers, tickets fell into our hands thanks to our friend Julien. We adjusted our stops, discussed “pacing,” and prepared for our march. ¡Listos!

Our adjusted schedule meant we were too early for Austin Beerworks’ new Verde Room (located in the old tap room) to be open. And we were probably already at the brewery the weekend before. Or after. Maybe both. With that in mind we decided to stick east of Burnet and grab post-work beers at Turnstile, a newish coffee-beer-cocktail-burger stand. They aren’t serving any cherry limeades out of the former Sonic space, but we did find Hold Out’s Nice-And-Clean American Light Lager. At 3.8% ABV we joked from here on out every beer had to be a little higher than the last. We eagerly awaited to see if anyone would show in response to our tweets and Instagram stories about the crawl. No one did, but when closing out one of the bartenders said, “hey, you’re the guys doing that thing to the game.” We could not have put it any better.

Did you know you can have open containers on the streets around Q2 and on most city streets? We’ve been told we can no longer give legal advice so maybe look it up before you just pop one open. Adelbert's even sets up a “lemonade stand” for walkies, but again we were a little premature. Thankfully they have cold singles in the tap room so we snagged some ever appropriate Dale Mexican-Style Lagers to keep us refreshed for the next half mile. We took the back way to do a spot check on Oskar Blues (it’s still there).

It’s true. We love you so much that we took our advertising budget for this quarter and put it into the research and development of some tasty new beers. We think you’ll enjoy the results. Order up at southernheightsbrewing.com or call 512-358-4350

It was time for a beer break and there's no better stop than the Beverage Place, aka Fairweather Cider. That walking beer had us feeling... heavy. We used our most excellent decision making skills to split a can of LOL Wut?, a Tempranillo barrel-aged Basque cider made in conjunction with the Austin Winery. Looking back we were very insecure about splitting a single can and went into way too much detail about our evening with the sweet and intently listening servers. About this time our only hopalong joined, Colin Barnett. Colin is a former brewer and one of the original Austin Beerworks brewers turned registered nurse. We swapped cycling stories and soccer knowledge while polishing off our text-inspired ciders. Ready to get back in our comfort zone, Colin joined us as we popped over to 4th Tap. This is when the crowds started picking up and we began to feel the energy of the impending match. A guy even walked in with a green drum. We grabbed a few easydrinking Sound Check Crispy Boys and enjoyed the last bit of air conditioning, and seating, we would have for the evening. Colin headed back to Fairweather to meet his mates and we pressed on, making our way towards our next stop, cutting across the Metric parking lots and slyly trying to get a Budweiser from the fans tailgating before making their way in (guess we gotta try harder next time, this Bud was not for us).

BOOM! Now we were in it. If you didn’t already know, Hopsquad is... hopping... on match days. With the stadium in sight and time ticking, we decided to divide and conquer the growing lines. Josh in the outdoor can line, Aaron grabbing grub from High Mileage Burgers. We popped open our El Zapatista Mexican-Style Lagers, waited for flat top burgers to come off the grill and greeted Julien and his son as they arrived for the match. By the time we were finished eating, lines were almost non-existent and a walking beer was tempting us, but... pacing.

In regular Beer and Loathing fashion we were behind schedule and chants of “Verde!” were beckoning so a dip into Circle for a beer was nixed. Next time, Circle. You looked like you were doing just fine without us that day. A nice person slapped some C4 energy drinks in our hand outside the stadium and we downed what we could before navigating security.

There are plenty of places to grab a beer in Q2, but our journalistic duties required us to visit the Beer Hall while Julien secured our space in the Supporters Section. A 20+ minute wait later we were afforded the opportunity to purchase two $18 drafts of Pinthouse’s not-so-elusive Electric Jellyfish. The price was much talked about on social media when the stadium first opened and our dedication to the fully immersive experience meant we swiped that card without a second thought.

“Dale, dale, dale, A-T-X!” Six beers and a couple of miles later, we were in position! Going into this, we joked the “loathing” part would come from a third straight scoreless match at McKalla Place. We’ve never been so happy to have to do a rewrite. 180+ scoreless minutes at McKalla Place had the crowd at a fever pitch, and when that first home goal went in the place exploded. Green lights, smoke, and expensive beer showers. Who knew soccer could

be so much fun? If you ever get a chance, we highly recommend the Supporters Section. There isn’t a better atmosphere in Austin. Some 24oz Dos Equis at the half, three more goals (and three more beer showers), ended in a win that had us feeling euphoric. As “True Love Will Find You In the End” filled the stands, we headed to the catch the #3 bus home with grand plans to wrap up the evening at a proper pub, Draught House. With the victory and energy of the match it was hard to find loathing, so maybe this was more like Beer and Exhaustion. More than six hours on our feet crawling around north Austin breweries and cheering on the local club had our beer and sweat soaked bodies spent. Before we rolled under 183, Aaron was out and so was a final pint (which would have surely brought the loathing). We took the win, said goodnight, and thanked ourselves in the morning.

Opened in 2015, 4th Tap Brewing Co-op is the first 100% worker-owned cooperative brewery in Texas.

Kevin Brand moved back to Austin in early 2008 and began brewing beer that summer. The initial lineup was the Wit, Pale, and IPA, but quickly added Pecan Porter. Lucky for all of us, (512) began bottling their beer last year and they are available in your favorite bottle shop or grocery store.

You’ve had their kolaches, now you can enjoy their beer as well. The beers are brewed in their new brewery just across the parking lot. Lounge in the expansive backyard or chill in the comfy bar taproom.

It would be silly to say there was a vacancy where South Austin Brewery used to be, but now there’s not... but since when have we been worried about that. Anyway, that’s where Vacancy Brewing is located. Not to hate, but they are a major upgrade.

BEYOND BEER

Brian Knowles If Brian looks familiar but you can’t place it, maybe he once made you a cappuccino at Brew & Brew or you caught him on stage soundtracking an ABG Best Of awards party at The ABGB as DJ Mild Mild Life. Now you can find him six days a week at Terrible Love, his coffee trailer currently parked outside Oddwood Brewing.

FAVORITE AUSTIN BEER? RIGHT NOW? The Oddwood/Zilker collab Wolfmobile Hoppy Oat Lager is a perfect summer beer. I don’t keep any in the trailer. Also, I know it’s not “Austin,” but Fireman’s Light has been the only beer I’ve bought in the grocery store for at least a year. WHAT’S YOUR LEAST FAVORITE DRINK TO MAKE? It depends. I usually don’t mind making any of them, but during a rush it can be tough to make a bunch of hot lattes back-to-back because steaming milk can take a minute.

IF YOU COULD ONLY DRINK ONE TYPE OF (COFFEE) DRINK FOR THE REST OF TIME, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Maybe cappuccinos. To me it’s the perfect ratio of milk to espresso and they can work as breakfast in a pinch. Plus, dicking around with latte art is always fun.

BEST PLACE IN TOWN FOR A CUP OF DRIP COFFEE?

a little “bourbon oak” dark roast with “pecan chocolate “ medium, add a big pour of “half & half,” and we’re in business.

COFFEE BEERS. YEA OR NAY? For sure. Although I don’t fuck with stouts much these days, I love like 8 ounces of a good coffee pale. WHAT'S WITH THE CASSETTE TAPES? I like albums and they’re way cheaper and easier to handle than vinyl. It’s also ended up being a pretty good conversation starter putting the case of the tape I’m playing on display. (My cassette players keep breaking in the heat, so I’m looking for a Walkman I can take out of the trailer everyday. Let me know if you see one.)

I don’t remember the last time I ordered drip, but if I did there are several shops in town where I know they’d nail it. Among them are Brew & Brew, Figure 8, Try Hard, and Fleet.

YOU'RE IN A TRAILER THAT ORIGINALLY HOUSED MINIATURE PONIES. HAVE YOU TIRED OF LI'L SEBASTIAN JOKES YET?

WHERE AND WHEN WAS YOUR LAST GAS STATION COFFEE?

I made a joke about Shetland ponies in the Sprudge write up and they ran with it. The guy I bought it from said he thought the previous owner used it for pigs. Finally, I’m free from the lies.

Road trips going out West are ROUGH when it comes to coffee options (hell, gas stations are kinda hard to find), so I usually stock a cooler with cold brew and avoid pit stop caffeine entirely. If my hand is forced, I like those spots with like 14 varieties on drip. Mix
