Greetings! Lions, Lionesess, & Leos: I truly humbled and very honored to be the District Governor of this great district, the Mother District of Lionism, District 1-A of all over the world. I am humbled and honored because you have elected a woman, the 2nd woman in the 98 year of Lionistic History in Chicagoland.
You, my fellow lions have shown me how you have used your personal gifts, your blessings and your talents and turned them into expressions of selfgiving. I have enjoyed your creativity and felt your dedication. I have seen the compassion in your eyes and the desire to improve someone else’s life.
I will do all I can, the best that I can to work for you, and for and every member of this district.
I have seen and heard every lion demonstrate a strong commitment to our Lions organization and the people in our communities who are in need of our services.
My solemn promise to you, my friends I will not only be your Governor for 2014-2015, I will also be a team player in whatever activities your club intends to perform. All you have to do is call me and I will try my very best to be there to help.
So my friends, as your Governor and as your team player I have developed a few goals for us in District 1-A that we all need to set our sights on in order to accomplish success for District 1-A, and through us our State and Lions Clubs International.
During the past two years when I was your 2nd and then 1st Vice District Governor and even before as I was your First Lady X2 times, and then as your Northside Sector Coordinator covering 37 clubs, I was in a learning phase to be your Governor. During all my learning, I had the opportunity to meet so many lions, their family members and their friends.
My one and constant goal would be identifying, mentoring women leaders.
I had participated in club, region, cabinet meetings, fundraisers, Governor Visits, memorial services, golf outings nite at the races, dinnerdances, bowling tournaments and so many other special events. Through these activities, during these past years, I have seen the pride and passion you, as lions have for lionism.
And now finally through all of experiences, I have come to realize my experiences as a lion have been. I’ve also come to realize that all of us are a part of change. We lions work so hard because we believe in what we do. We are contributing to a global effort by participating at a local level. We make a difference, we improve our communities, and we change lives! We appreciate the gift of sight is and strive to preserve it among those in our communities who are in peril of losing it; the young, the elderly and the diabetic. We are witnesses to “Lionism in Action” knowing that it is best seen, best experienced, best felt at the local level. We are partners of “Leadership in Action” at
the Club, District, State, National and International levels. Yes, Lions, Lionesses and Leos of District 1A, we are all part of the “big global picture of Lionism.” So, my dear lions I salute and thank each and every one of you for electing me as your District Governor. I was so happy last week to hold the first ever Braille Directory of District 1A in my hands at the Rush hospital bed. Yes my friends, I accomplished one of my goals already! My sincere thanks to The Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind for helping me in producing this First Braille Directory. As I end, I would like to share two different thoughts as you plan your activities for the coming year. Remember if your mind can conceive it, and your heart can believe it, then you can & will achieve it. And my second thought for you is Yesterday is gone, Tomorrow is not yet here, We only have Today. I am so sorry that in the first few weeks of July as your governor, I will not be able to take part in your club activities personally; in spirit I am there with you. Rush Hospital Doctors gave me my discharge date from the hospital on July 22nd. By that time I will be well and hearty to resume my governor’s duties in person. So let’s get started. District 1-A YOU ARE the Best. My sincere thanks to all of you for your loving prayers, cards, facebook wishes, flowers and e-mails. Thank you, I Love you all.
-Lion Terry D’Souza
Editorial: I will be your District Governor’s Newsletter editor this Lionistic year. I have set a cut-off date to receive articles to this newsletter – every 20th of the month. There will be no reminders to those who do not send. This is the only reminder you have for the rest of the year. So mark your calendar right now and schedule your task to send me your article. Any good articles which will promote Lionism in our district and strengthen our leaders will be published on this e-Newsletter. If you have any ideas, please pass it on to me. I received several calls from past and present leaders of our district on what to do when our Governor is in the hospital for few weeks in July. All PDG’s promised me their kind help in taking care of the business in Governor’s absence. So Lions, Lionesses and Leos, keep going and keep on doing what you have to do in your communities. I will be there to attend every program of yours if you invite me separately; not in a group mail or blog or on facebook. Until Governor Terry gets well, we also have Vice District Governors to take care of the business. We see that you will miss nothing to conduct district business. District Braille Directory is already ready and print form is going to the press on July 7th. It will be ready for distribution on forthcoming Cabinet Meeting. If any club doesn’t receive this directory, please call your Zone Chair and ask them to give it to you right away. I am publishing District Leaders information in next few pages so that you can recognize who is your Zone and Region Chair to contact and keep informed. Let us all play a team role so that we can win our goals for this Lionistic year. -Lion Austin D’Souza, Ph.D.
FROM I VICE DISTRICT GOVERNOR:
THE INTERNATIONAL
We are approaching the end of anther Lions leadership year and are getting ready to begin another. The month of June has been filled with installations of officers, induction of new members and the recognition of the club members for their outstanding contributions to the club for the past year. The sign of that a leadership year is coming to an end. As your 1st VDGE it was a privilege to perform the installation and induction duties for the respective clubs. It was also a privilege to be in attendance as the lions club members were recognized for their work for the club. And after these duties have been completed I will have enjoyed the fellowship of all the Lions present at the gathering. These will be the memories that I will always treasure as your 2nd VDG.
ASSOCIATION OF LIONS CLUBS
My upcoming year as 1st VDG is starting with a trip to Toronto for the 97th International convention. My wife and I (Sue) are looking forward to being with the Illinois delegation as well as the Lions of the World. Seeing all these Lions will give me a global perspective of Lionism; how huge our organization is and the service work it does on a global level. It is my greatest hope that the upcoming year will be a great one. That clubs will develop the strategies needed to grow their clubs; to do more service work in our district and to promote it in their area of service and the district. I will be working side by side with outstanding Lions in our district who want to see our district prosper and improve. I am also looking forward to working with our DG Lion Terry D'Souza and 2nd VDG Ernie Lapid as we move into the next leadership year. In closing I would like to ask that all the Lions of District 1A and Multiple District 1 keep Lion Terry D'Souza in their thoughts and prayers as she moves forward to a full recovery from her recent stroke And may God bless all the Lions of the District 1A, Multiple District 1 and the Lion Clubs International. -Lion Ralph Zarada, 1st VDG District 1A

One of the goals formulated during the creation of V.O.I.C.E.S. LIONS1A was that
V.O.I.C.E.S. would continue to support the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) and Lions of Illinois Foundation (LIF) in their projects and program by seeking and applying for contributions from like minded foundations, corporations and individuals who were not familiar with Lions services.
Just as the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) partners with outside sources to achieve their successes, the directors of V.O.I.C.E.S. LION TERRY D’SOUZA’s 2014-2015 GOALS
William “Bill” McKinney (PCC Lydia Ellis)
As a constant goal, Recognize, Encourage, Mentor and Support the huge contributions made by the females and young adults. This is not to take away from our male counterparts, who have carried the district thus far, but is welcoming and inducting new female & young adults into our clubs. It is a means of injecting our district with fresh ideas and new energy. I will encourage and promote more female involvement and by doing so, have them seek and serve in more leadership roles. Encourage ALL LIONS to work on creating Lionistic attitudes, respect and appreciation for each other in joining together towards our motto of “We Serve”, working, communicating and creating service projects together in order to help our communities and the world with my motto
