MD1 Concil Chair Speaks: anton173@comcast.net
Md-1 Lions and Leos, Welcome to the new Lions Year. I am extremely honored to have been elected as the Council Chair for the 2022-2023 Lions Year. I am so very excited to serve the MD-1 Lions and I can’t wait to get started. I want to sincerely thank the Council of Governors for electing me to this position. My job as Council Chair is to help them to achieve the goals that they have identified. I take this position very seriously and will do whatever it takes. I look forward to working
with all of you this year. You are a group of very dedicated Governors who want to serve their District and State. I would like to offer my thanks to CC John Barsanti for his service to my Council. Additionally, I would like to thank the outgoing Council who I had the pleasure of serving with last year. I wish you all nothing but the best as you pursue different avenues in the wonderful world of Lionism. Some of you, have accepted Chairman positions and I look forward to working with you this year. A big thank you to all incoming State Committee chairs, for taking the initiative to serve. For those of you who do not know me, let me introduce myself. I have been a Lion since 2010 and a proud member of the Orland Park Lions Club (District 1-A), which has been around for over 58 years. I am also the Service Chairman for the club this year. Hopefully, we have navigated our way around the pandemic and can move forward the way we used to, but not take everything for

granted. We seem to be living in different world from a couple years ago. I have been asked by some Lions what my goals are as CC? Frankly, I have 3 goals. 1. To communicate, communicate & communicate with everyone. 2. Have fun, that always make the work easier. 3. Work with the FVDG & SVDG’s to acclimate them to the MD-1 state experience. I am also a big supporter of the open-door policy. Please feel free to let me know your ideas and your concerns. The COG will continue to work closely with the GMA to grow membership. Which is the number 1 issue in the state. Watch for more information from the COG and GMA team as they formulate their plans for this important initiative. I have included the dates and locations for this year’s Council Meetings. All are welcome to attend. 2nd Council Meeting – September
9-10, 2022 Embassy Suites East Peoria, IL 3rd Council Meeting – December 23, 2022 – President Abraham Lincoln Hotel, Springfield, IL 4th Council Meeting – February 3-4, 2023 – Holiday Inn, East Peoria, IL 5th Council Meeting – May 17-21, 2023 President Abraham Lincoln Hotel, Springfield , IL Don’t forget on Friday night of the Council Meetings, there will be a Hospitality Room for fellowship hosted by the Council of Governors. From IPID Bob Block:
was part of the directors that had a three-year term.
Thank You …… For the opportunity to serve as an International Director from MD1 - Illinois on the International Level of the Lions Clubs Association. What an experience!! Hello and thank you for this memorable journey. Lion Brenda and I have had a wonderful experience as an International Director. It is something that we will never forget and be thankful to the Lions of Illinois for a long time. It is your confidence and support you have shown to allow us to be on this two or now three-year journey. As a Director, you are to have a two year term, but due to the pandemic I was honored to have that third year. This happened due to the cancellation of the convention and a nonvoting year for new officers. I
Over the three years, we have had several trips, flew over 125,000 air miles, attended numerous district & state conventions/conferences and yes more than I can count, participated in an abundance of “Zoom” meetings. We have visited 40 plus states in our country. Unfortunately, because of travel restrictions, we were not able to travel outside of the United States. So, we lost some of that experience as a Director. Regardless, we still had a great time. It was exciting to visit other districts and share their ideas and projects they have and are doing in their community. I found that we all have the same problems of membership and leadership. It was interesting to see how they were handling it in their own way. Some had good ideas and methods while others could use some more guidance that I was able to offer during my visit. Being a director, has given us the full experience of being a LION. When talking about membership,
4 The Illinois Lion & Leo
we talked about the friendship that is made through being a Lion, not only in our club, district or state, but worldwide. We found that wherever our travels took us, the Lions were there to greet us with open arms. Meeting and celebrating their success were a warm and refreshing experience. Yes, this was the best part of the job. As we move forward, Brenda and I are looking forward to coming home and getting involved with the Lions of MD1. I hope that soon, we have the opportunity to share those
thoughts and ideas on the growth of leadership and membership. And, to see how we can apply some of the good ideas here in Illinois. Thank you once again for this great and humbling opportunity….. Lion Bob and Lion Brenda International Director 2019-2022 615 205th Pl, Dyer, IN 46311 219-671-0287

A Message from the MD1 GMT
GMT State Coordinator Greetings Lions of MD1! First of all, I want to thank the 2022-2023 Council of Governors for this opportunity to serve. I also
want to acknowledge my excitement of serving with my other GAT Team members, PDG Joni McMillian, MD1 GST and IPDG Lori Chassee, MD1 GLT. These are two excellent and devoted Lions. I have a quick story I’d like to share. I received a phone call the other day from a district’s Lion leader. It wasn’t good news. A longstanding club was basically imploding. Members walking away and resigning, members transferring to other clubs, lots of angry and hurt people. I am sure some of you have heard of or been involved in a similar situation at
5 The Illinois Lion & Leo
some point in your Lion journey. The issue you ask? Well, in this case some of new members came in with new ideas for service and fundraising. In order to do some of these things that dirty word, CHANGE, would have to occur. Some of the established members who had served long and hard objected. Disagreement and frustration ruled. As I reflected on this, I asked myself how could this have been avoided? The club was getting new members, but they didn’t feel valued. What could have been done to honor all members desire to serve? Is there anything club leadership could have done differently? Are there processes in place for new members to become involved, share their passions, and be an asset to the club and their community? How should a club integrate their new members? I think these are questions many clubs need to discuss. Perhaps the new member induction process needs to be modified. Maybe there needs to be a process for checking new member satisfaction. The bottom line is we are losing more Lions
than we are gaining. This membership decline can be reversed, but it is going to take some effort from the club level up. The tools and people are in place to help, we just need to devote ourselves to the work. More hands can mean more service, new, different, and needed service for our communities. There will be opportunities provided for Lions across MD1 for planning, sharing, and gaining knowledge and skills to help build our clubs, our leaders, and our service. Please consider what time and effort you can give. I have always considered going to institutes, forums, and other meetings just another form of service and an opportunity to serve better as a Lion. As we go into this new Lions year, I have so many things I am passionate about and so many good things I want to happen for all our Lions. I hope you will join me and your fellow Lions on this journey toward our future in MD1. Thank you for all you do. PDG Deb Greaney MD1 GMT --------------------------------------

Campaign 100: Thank You to All, We Exceeded our Goal!
Having spent some years in the publication business the one major headache for any writer is “lead time”. The time from when an article is written until it reaches the reader. Even in our high-tech society it still exists.
That brings us to my dilemma as we wind down Campaign 100. This must be written with a few open days for contributions to hopefully flood into the Lions Clubs International Foundation fund. So, without any hope of giving you numbers for MD1, Illinois we will spend this time in gratitude. I know the numbers are great, and we will have those later. So, let’s tell the real story. Lions helping people. When we began, the objective was to reach a point where LCIF can help two billion people. That is like a hug and handshake to so many folks that need assistance. As we worked towards that objective the world-wide need continued to grow in all areas of Lions help. Plus, we added an insidious virus that needed funds. Maybe like six million. Also added to the list was the plight of Ukrainian refugees. Close to two million has been granted to help there, across Europe. Illinois has stepped to the plate in many ways thanks to all of you Lions, who reached out with a dollar, five dollars or obviously, so much more.
10 The Illinois Lion & Leo
The story was told by the many District Coordinators who served over the four years. Some the entire time, others as they could. We had several Multiple District Coordinators. To ALL, we give a huge THANK YOU, for serving, giving,
and caring and reaching our goal of $300,000,000 to $324,687,263! Campaign 100 is concluded, but LCIF will continue to need support. We will be sharing good news soon, but needs will continue. Look to hear from your coordinators, and God Bless You All. -PDG Ed Carter
