To All Our Readers:

January, 2014

2014 should hold much promise for everyone - the promise of new members, the promise of keeping our present members, the promise of new Lions clubs and the promise of new Leo clubs. I want to remind you that to induct new members is great but your work does not stop there - you must instruct/orientate them about Lions and the great work that we do. Take a few minutes at your meetings to talk about your club and your events and about Lions and what we as Lions do in the world. You will not only be teaching your new members, but you also be reminding your present members about what a great organization we are.

Message from Our Council Chair:

Happy

New Year Greetings to All; I hope that everyone had a good Christmas season and you are now looking forward to the start of a New Year. The 2013-2014 Lions year is half over and there is still so much to be done in MD 1. There is still much cleanup and rebuilding going on in communities that were hit by the November storms and they will continue to know the Lions presence in their efforts. I want to say THANK YOU to every Lions Club and/or individual who responded with donations and/or money to help in the process of putting lives and homes back together again. Also THANK YOU to every District Alert Chairperson who did their job prior to the storms and were prepared and ready to assist the damaged areas, and to those Alert Chairpersons who are not prepared or have not taken the time to get prepared, I hope that this has been a eye opening experience for you and you will now step up and work on getting better informed and ready in the event that when (and we will) have more disasters hit our state that you will also be prepared. It would be so rewarding for all the District Governors of MD 1 to be able to say that “We are all ready in the event a disaster should strike my district. I also want to say THANK YOU to LCIF and the personnel that worked with the 6 District Governors in their Disaster aid requests.

Remember also to utilize your GMT and GLT persons in your district to help in the orientation of all your Lions members, and include our Lions of Illinois Foundation Trustees in the process also, so that everyone knows/remembers what we do here in MD 1 to help those that WE SERVE. MD 1 District conventions will begin in February and I urge you to take the time to attend your district convention. It is a time to learn more about Lions and to meet up with Lions friends that you do not see often. It is also a time to meet and get to know the International speaker who will be at your convention. I encourage and challenge everyone to work to make 2014 a great year in Lionism here in MD 1. Please contact me at any time that you have questions, comments or concerns about happenings here in our state. I will be glad to talk with you.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!! -CC Lydia Ellis 2

Editorial: Six Months to Go!

and put those dreams to work, our dreams will remain like those white clouds on the skies which never produce rain. Remember – even Melvin Jones teamed up his friends to make his dream a successful mission in this world. Be a missionary to spread the word and show them in actions. -IPDG Austin D’Souza, Editor

Fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos: 2013 is history and 2014 is our future. It is time to look back and see where we stand in achieving our “Lionistic Year Goals for the Year.” We have only six months to go to reach our goals and to highlight our accomplishments of success. It is time to bring back our enthusiasm, strength and courage to set our goals to a higher standard.

---------------------------------------------------------------

TO ALL OUR READERS

Happy Holidays! May your God bless you and keep you in Good health to serve, Good humor to attract, Good cheers to comfort, Good love to share, Good enthusiasm to care Good thoughts to support, Good friendship to strive, Good courage to participate, Good patience to survive, Good wisdom to defend, Good ears to hear, Good eyes to see & Good life to live, Amen.

Where your lionistic troops are standing in the battlefield of lionism? In a front row or they are on break since your recruitment? Some of us like our titles so much, we do nothing and the promises we gave to our Governors or Council Chair remains without any fruitful results. Such business is not fair to our District or State Leaders. We must run Lionism just like business – seeking for good and maximum results. Even though we are volunteers, there should be accountability for our actions and then only we can show our growth. Our goals should be reachable; thus we can reach our success with greater glory. One person can do nothing in Lionism. We need stronger teams to accomplish our Goals. We can just dream day and night; however, if we do not follow our dreams

While most people slept in the pre-dawn hours on Monday, five Orland Park Lions hitched a trailer to a truck and headed south to deliver much-needed relief to the people of tornado-ravaged Washington, near Peoria. “This is going to be a sobering [three-hour] ride,” predicted Jim Smith, as he drank some coffee in the unseasonably cold weather at 5:40 a.m. “But we’re up for it.” 4

Smith was joined in the relief effort by fellow Lions and Orland Park residents Herb Zimmermann and Jim Jankowski, whose daughter, Sandra, and son, James, pitched in and made the trip. Both young adults were taking the day off school to participate in the mission of mercy — Sandra from Moraine Valley Community College and James from Sandburg High School. The Lions managed to just about fill their trailer in a mere 48 hours after they put out the call to help Washington in the wake of the Nov. 17 tornado that killed at least one person, injured many others and damaged about 20 percent of the Central Illinois city of 15,000. The trailer was loaded with items requested by authorities leading the cleanup: buckets, mops, sponges, paper towels, trash bags, bottled water, large and small plastic storage bags, manual can openers, baby formula and more. About half of the items in the trailer were purchased by the Lions. The rest was donated by people in the area, as well as a few outside organizations like the Mt. Greenwood Lions and Chicago Heights Lions. Also in the trailer was a good deal of school supplies, some of it donated. “[The tragedy] touched the hearts of a lot of teachers in this area, and they responded well with donations,” added Jim Jankowski. Keeping with their nearly century-old mission to prevent blindness and improve eye care for people around the world, the Lions brought with them a supply of vouchers that the people of Washington can use to obtain prescription eyeglasses at a nearby LensCrafters shop. “A lot of people lost their glasses [in the tornado], either through damage or simply because with a tornado coming, they had

no time to grab anything, even their glasses,” Jim Jankowski observed. “We can’t erase the pain that the people of Washington went through. That never goes away. To see 1,500 homes just flattened like that, to see them turned to rubble in a matter of seconds — what do you say about that? Do you say that things are going to be OK? I don’t know how or if you can do that,” Smith added. “But there are some things we can do, which is why the Orland Park Lions did what we did,” he continued. “This is a very good organization that does a lot for the [Orland Park] community, and now we’re reaching out to others in their time of need.” Shortly after 6 a.m., the truck, trailer and another vehicle pulled out of the Orland Park Lions Christmas tree lot near 143rd and La Grange Road. At about mid-day, Smith called The Regional News from the road, shortly after the Orland Park Lions had unloaded their trailer and headed back. “If there’s one thing I can say, it was a sobering experience, that’s for sure,” Jim Smith said, echoing what he had predicted hours earlier. ------------------------------------------------------

On November 20, the Harvard Lions Club sponsored a public informational meeting about Leader Dogs for the Blind and Disabled. Judy Shaw, PDG, Freeport Lions, spoke about the training facility in Michigan that train Guide Dogs at the approximate cost of $38,000 each. The dogs are then given, free of charge, to the disabled recipient. The recipient goes through 26 day training with the canine companion learning guide dog care and commands.

Thank you. -CC Lydia Ellis The German Valley Lions filled three backpacks with new warm clothing and winter wear to be given to the Freeport Area church Cooperative who is filling 30 such backpacks for the homeless in our area. Also, a local Puppy Raiser, Kathryn Gooding of Crystal Lake, brought Wilson, a 6 month old Leader dog in training. Wilson is raised in a home for socialization and simple command training for one year before being turned over to the Michigan Training Facility. Some 300 dogs a year are raised in this fashion. The difficult part for the Puppy Raiser is giving up the puppy, but the understanding is the dog will provide a better life for the new Guide Dog Owner.

Freeport Lions announced the end of 2013 District 1-D Peace Poster Contest, "Our World, Our Future", and subsequent award of 2nd Place Winner awarded to 6th grade Freeport Middle School student, Laila Al-Shwaili. The award presentation took place on the morning of December 5, 2013, during a 6th grade assembly in front of Laila’s fellow students who broke into applause when Principal Nick Swords made the announcement. Art teacher, Melinda Cook, said that she is very proud of her student’s thoughts and efforts put into this winning poster. The artist's beautiful poster depicts a heartshaped earth floating on a field of twinkling stars and wrapped in a ribbon of flags from different nations.

Trey Culbertson, a 6th grade student at East Dubuque Elementary, has taken the first step to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning a local competition sponsored by the East Dubuque Lions Club. The11-year-old from East Dubuque’s poster was selected by popular vote for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “Our World, Our Future.” Runner up is Max Bowman of St. Mary’s School. The judging was held at East Dubuque District Library. The East Dubuque District Library graciously offered viewing and voting space for the Lions Club yearly event. District Library Director, Michelle Wessels said “it was an honor to hold the event at the library and was impressed with the increase in library attendance during the weeklong event.” East Dubuque Lions Club President John Lang said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at both East Dubuque Elementary and St. Mary's Schools. “It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.” -------------------------------------------------

Have you ever wondered what happens to the glasses that you donated to the Lions of Illinois, in particular the Oregon Illinois Club? Well, they crossed the table at the Lions of Illinois Foundation Center in Sycamore where they were sorted by Lion Members. The attached photo shows the table with a “pile” of glasses being sorted and boxed. The members from lower left clockwise are the Manager of the Glasses Program Lion Rick Tonozzi, PDG, Lion Duane Moser Oregon Club, Lion Van Stone the Executive Director of the Lions of Illinois Foundation, and Lions Wayne Cole and Pat Slowiak also members of the Oregon, IL Club. Most glasses collected within this State by the Lions of Illinois cross this table and are sorted by either gold, silver or plastic and packed into card board containers weighing roughly 30 pounds. On this particular day the Oregon Lions sorted and packed 7 boxes each containing 900 pair for a total of 3,600 pairs of glasses.

23

The Foundation receives 7,000 to 10,000 donated pair of glasses per week. By comparison this amounts to nearly twice the residents of Oregon donating one pair of glasses per week for ever. Astonishing numbers!

glasses to take on their medical missions. The Foundation ships approximately 300,000 plastic pair annually. *

New Lenox Lions Breakfast with Santa; Santa visiting with his elfin helpers! --------------------------------------------------------Message: Fellow Lions: I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I’m sure as Lions, we all remembered to pray for all of those less fortunate than we are. A safe and wondrous Merry Christmas to all! A continuing thank you to all the clubs for the warm welcomes I am receiving at my club visits! I hope to contact the remaining clubs I have not yet visited within the next few weeks and get them scheduled. Well, as you know, on Sunday, November 17th, terrible storms ripped through Illinois causing loss of life and extensive property damage, with many, many families losing everything. The Lions of Illinois have rose to the challenge and have supplied much needed supplies and money to help those areas affected. Right here in our own district, Fayette County was hit rather hard as well, and I should be receiving grant money to help them soon. St. Elmo Lions Club has taken the lead and is already helping those in need, but it will be an ongoing process. Clubs wishing to donate funds to be used in Fayette County can send a check to District Treasurer Dean Keller at 10653 East Aminoff Drive, Effingham, IL, 62401. Make checks payable to Lions of Illinois, District 1-L, and write

Share Your Thoughts on the MD1 Forum: The MD-1 Forum committee has already begun planning for the MD-1 Forum 2014. In an effort to increase participation the committee felt it was important to connect to all Lions within our multiple district. Please go to the link provided and respond to the following questions. Your input is important whether or not you have attended the MD1 Forum. Thanks for taking the time to assist the committee in preparing such leadership opportunities.

President John Knudson along with Lions Mark Turk, Missy Honiotes, John Joseph, and (former Leo) Amanda Honiotes did their shopping today at Aldi for the Joliet Spanish Center on Eastern Ave. $300.00 will get you 36 boxes pasta, 76 boxes various breakfast cereals, 27-1 lb bags of rice, 40 - 5 lb bags of flour and 8- 5 lb packages of corn meal. Lion Mark's back was acting up a little so while the rest of the crew shopped and loaded the truck, Lion Mark (the human calculater) kept track of our shopping costs....we actually spent $300.03. Photo was aken at the center.

Dear Lion: Please take 2 minutes to answer one of the questions. Your response will assist the committee in planning future events. What makes me happy during this time of year is sharing love with the people who fill my life, my children, my friends. And the certainty that the simplest things in our daily lives hide thousands of drops of happiness. You only have to open your hands and let them fill with dreams. I hope the greatest promises of the New Year become reality, and that 2014 becomes a better year for everyone. I send you all my love and best wishes for these holidays.
