Chicago Arirang Lions Club inducted 6 New Members during their 40 th Anniversary Celebrations held at European Crystal Banquets at Arlington Heights on October 19, 2013

Greetings from Council Chair Lydia I hope that everyone has their calendars marked to attend the upcoming MD 1 Forum to be held November 8-9 in Normal. This is always a very informative event to attend and a time to catch up with Lions friends that we do not see often.

As we all know, IP Barry Palmer has a theme this year to FOLLOW YOUR DREAM and I want to share with you some thoughts on the word DREAM. D is for dedication. We as Lions, Lioness and Leos are dedicated to helping those that we serve. We work in many areas: sight projects, hearing projects, work to eradicate river blindness, providing measles shots to those who are in need of them, provide assistance in areas where a disaster has struck, and Leader dogs for the blind and guide dogs for those who need other assistance to live a normal life.

R is for responsibility. We as Lions, Lioness and Leos feel that it is our responsibility to work in our Communities, our Districts, our State and with Lions Clubs International to provide the needed funds to carry out our many projects. It is our duty to promote the work that we do. We must let people know about our work and the projects that we undertake and the results of our hard work and determination.

Thank you to every Lion, Lioness and Leo in MD1 who work to make things happen for those that WE SERVE. Your hard work is appreciated. Thank you to all the clubs who have taken on the task of doing the CEP (Club Excellence Program) in their clubs, and I encourage more clubs to go thru the process to see where they can better themselves. CONGRATULATIONS to DG Tawny Hall, DG Fred Peska, DG John Pajkos, DG Johnny Anderson, DG Molly Penny and DG Dave Wheeler. They were awarded the Silver Star pins in this year’s Dream Achiever program. I will be presenting DG Johnny Anderson, DG Tawny Hall and DG Dave Wheeler their pins at the upcoming MD1 Forum. DG Fred Peska, DG John Pajkos and DG Molly Penny received their pins at the USA Canada Forum that was held in Overland Park, Kansas.

E is for education. As Lions, Lioness and Leos we must always be open to learning more about our Organization. We must work with our new members to help them gain knowledge about being a member. Lions International has many learning opportunities available on line and thru webinars. We must continue to learn to maintain our membership and remain the greatest service organization in the world. We should all strive to learn something new each day of our life.

In Lionism, CC Lydia Ellis

A is for attitude. Wow this is a good one. Your attitude will determine your altitude in life and Lions. We must all work to attain a good, uplifting altitude and this can be very difficult. We will have many negative thoughts come our way but we must work to keep a positive attitude in all things. Easier said than done, but in Lions, Lioness and Leos we have a good support system with others who can help us thorough the rough times.

Editor’s Note: MD1 Web magazine is getting popularity amongst Illinois Lions. I received nothing but positive remarks which make me very proud to be the editor of this magazine which I want to publish every month without fail. Let us make this magazine a mouthpiece of MD1 Lions by contributing valuable articles on various subjects which will make Lions Clubs in our communities more alert and more receivable by fellow citizens.

M is for motivation. What is your motivation on behalf of Lions this week, this month, the rest of this year, and next year? Is your Club working on getting food baskets ready for the holiday season? Are you touched by someone who has asked for help with eye glasses or a hearing aid so that they can have a productive life? Let your heart be touched and you will be motivated to work just a little bit harder to make things happen for those that WE SERVE. So Dream your Dream and then work to FOLLOW YOUR DREAM to make it come true. Dream of getting some new members into your club and then ask them to join you at a meeting or a fund raising event. Dream of getting a new club started in your district and then work to see that happen. I received word that we have a couple of new Leo clubs that the paperwork is being filed with International and there are several more Leo clubs in the works. Great job to all who have worked to make these Leo clubs happen.

I humbly request all our State Chairpersons to take part in this magazine by sending your articles. As chairpersons you should have something to say to all lions and here is an opportunity for you to communicate. I believe in deadlines and my deadline to receive all articles, news and photographs is 20th of every month. Share your clubs unique activities with other clubs so that they can also become successful and popular. State away from ‘best kept secret’ as nobody will know what we do. We have so many opportunities due to social media and let us make use of the same. Let all clubs in MD1 have facebook pages, twitter and websites. Facebook and twitter will cost you nothing other than some of 2

your valuable time. Take pictures and place them facebook and show the world what Lions do in their communities. If you need any help to start a facebook page or how to upload pictures, do not hesitate to contact me and I will do the best.

events, Lions who complete their BINGO card will be eligible for drawings. And there is always the chance that you will be the winner of the 50/50 drawing. Clubs or individual Lions can send a message or promote an event by purchasing an ad for the program booklet. Price for a half page ad is $30 and a full page ad is $50. Copy and payment can be sent to the Lions of Illinois State office, Inc., 19702 State Highway 123, Petersburg, Illinois 626757570.

Media is the best medium to get publicized; let all lions in MD1 make use of it. If you do not have a facebook page or website, what are you waiting for? Step up to the plate and do something* -Austin D’Souza, MD1 State Magazine Editor

At the September 26th 1-D NW Central Zone meeting the German Valley Lions presented DG Fred Peska with a check for $1,275 to be donated to Leader Dogs for the Blind. The donation was made possible by the proceeds of the German Valley Lions Dog Days of Summer fundraiser. Thank you to the German Valley Lions, Leaf River lions and Freeport Lions for making this event a success.

In addition to the great sessions organized for Saturday that will provide top notch learning activities for MD-1 Lions, those in attendance will have numerous opportunities to network. Networking allows Lions to share information about an upcoming event, discuss fund raising activities, celebrate a success, or come up with possible solutions to a problem. During lunch, discussion teasers will be provided at each table. Lions will be encouraged to share an idea and discuss what they know. There will be many chances to “borrow or tweak” ideas to take home to clubs.

Pictured in the presentation from L-R are Leaf River Lions Kristi Olesen and Terri Lindstrom, Freeport Lion and Zone Chairman Darla Van Buskirk, 1-D Leader Dog Liaison PDG Judy Shaw, German Valley Lions President Duane Collman, 1D DG Fred Peska, and German Valley Lions Treasurer Donald Plock.

Exhibitors will be on hand to share information about the Lions Clubs International Foundation, the Lions of Illinois Foundation, and the Host Committee for the 2017 Convention. Attendees will also have a chance to play Lions BINGO to win door prizes. During the day’s 3

Building an excellent Lions club is a process. As a professional, I also had an opportunity to build a small business. Building a business is about offering something that people want or need. It's about developing a group of hardworking people who want to contribute to the growth and success of the business. It's about continuously looking for ways to improve. It's a lot like building an excellent club. 7

As I shared with you in July, the Club Excellence Process (CEP) isone of the most effective ways to keep your club on track for growth and success. CEP gives you the tools to strengthen your service, improve club effectiveness and enhance your membership experience.

Crete Lion Dan Mulderink (l) recently presented a plaque to Eagle Scout, Jacob Darabaris of Boy Scout Troop 123 for the bathroom remodel at the Recycle Center. The Boy Scout troop received help and donations from Crete Ace Hardware, Walt’s, and Crete Lumber. The bathroom is now called Troop 123 Watercloset, thanks to the great job of the Boy Scouts*

And we've made it even easier to participate in this program by offering two versions of CEP to choose from: 

CEP Pro is designed for clubs that would like to have a trained Lion facilitator to come in and guide members through the workshop.  CEP Lite is for clubs that would prefer to have a member of their club lead the workshop.  The Club Excellence Process will make your club stronger. I'm asking you to take CEP to your Lions and share with them how critical the program is to your continued success. Your club will be recognized with a banner patch when you complete CEP and submit a brief half-page report to LCI. And coming soon, your club will also receive special CEP recognition in the Find a Club section of the LCI website. 

Share CEP at your next club meeting, and decide which version is right for your club!

Lions have a history of aiding the blind and visually impaired, and perhaps no one needs our help more than children. Many children with vision loss don't attend school, and many schools are unable to meet the needs of the visually impaired because they lack the assistive technology and resources.

If your club is still looking for a visionrelated service project for our Sharing the Vision campaign, I encourage you to help a local school or library acquire the assistive technology and resources to help visually impaired children realize their full potential. This also advances our Reading Action Program (RAP), which is dedicated to increasing reading and literacy rates among children around the world. So share literacy, share hope and share the vision with children who need it!

To learn more about our service and membership goals, check out my special presentation that can help advance the goals of your club and Lions around the world!

You can help protect a child's sight – it's as easy as taking a picture. Throughout October, Lions celebrate World Sight Day (October 10th) and the "Sharing the Vision" global service action campaign. This year's World Sight Day theme is universal eye health and the importance of making a "pledge" to maintain your eye health and have a regular eye exam. LCIF partner Johnson & Johnson is celebrating World Sight Day with Lions by promoting eye exams and raising money for our shared initiative, Sight for Kids. The Sight for Kids program was selected by Johnson & Johnson as one of a select few charities to benefit through their free Donate a Photo mobile application. Now through November 30th, 2013, you can help provide a vision screening and save a child's sight simply by uploading a photo. For every photo donated via the app to Sight for Kids, J&J will donate $1 towards Sight for Kids screenings.* Since 2002, Sight for Kids' mission has been to remove barriers to eye care for children in the most underserved areas across Asia – providing eye exams, glasses and treatment. To date, Lions and Sight for Kids have screened the vision of nearly 18 million children. Consider donating a photo each day for Sight for Kids to help Lions protect a child's sight... It's as easy as downloading the free mobile app and taking pictures! How to Get Started 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Download the FREE "Donate a Photo" app for your Apple or Android device by searching for it in iTunes or Google Play/Android. Once downloaded, follow the easy, in-app steps to set up an account and profile. Choose LCIF's cause: "One Photo helps protect a child's sight... with Sight for Kids." Take a picture – any photo will work but "selfies" and "eye selfies" are preferred! Or choose a photo from your device's library or album. The entire setup process should only take around two minutes.

Your photo will be displayed like this: Photo Guidelines Users can donate up to one photo a day, every day, to the Sight for Kids cause through November 30, 2013. Any appropriate photo helps, but Lions are hoping to share photos of faces or eyes to raise awareness about the importance of accessible eye care and eye exams. Are you planning a project or event for Sharing the Vision month and World Sight Day? Be sure to tag photos with the hashtags #lionsclubs and #eyepledge on Facebook and Twitter. We will share select photos through the Lions Clubs International official Facebook and Twitter pages. The Donate a Photo app is available in the United States only. No matter where you live, be sure to get the word out about Lions Sight for Kids program and the importance of eye exams for our children. Photos shared are not used for any commercial purposes.

Thank you for your support and for protecting children's sight!

Three events have shaped his life – getting Hodgkin’s cancer at 17 after being a 3-sport athlete, filling a college scholarship requirement by working in a school in Chicago where 8 students were lost to violence, and learning on his previous job that change can only happen so fast. One of his goals is to require all students to perform some service activities. Picture: SV Lions secretary Curt Freeberg, SVHS Principal P. J. Caposey, SV Lions President Marty Typer.

"We are pleased to confirm that at its meeting October 6-10, 2013, the International Board of Directors approved the redistricting proposal for Districts 1-B and 1-K to become District 1-BK. This newly redistricted district will become effective at the close of the next international convention." (July 8, 2014 Toronto Convention) The leadership of the Lions of Illinois was directed by the members to actively submit a bid with the City of Chicago to host the 100th Anniversary of Lions Clubs International. Three years ago, Lions of Illinois, Multiple District 1 was selected as the host District for this convention. In the past years, I have been gathering information from Lions Clubs International, the most recent International Conventions and looking back at what we did in 2007 when the Multiple District hosted the 90th Anniversary of Lions Clubs International.

The above paragraph was taken from a letter written by Ann Laube, Manager of the English Language Department at Lions Clubs International, dated October 11, 2013. The letter contains the confirmation that the merger between Districts 1-B and 1-K has been approved by the International Board of Directors. As a result, the new District 1-BK will begin operation following the close of the Toronto International Convention on July 8, 2014. Many Lions, from both districts, were involved in the fifteen month process, and without the full cooperation of each and every one of them, the merger would not have been possible.

Plans are underway for a Joint Special Convention, to officially elect new officers for its first year of operation (2014-2015). The convention will be held on Saturday, November 23rd, from 10am till noon, at the Marseilles Lions Den. Delegates from both districts will be certified to vote for the officers. A new District 1-BK Constitution and By-Laws will also be adopted during the convention.

The 100th Lions Clubs International Convention will be held at McCormick Place in Chicago. The convention dates are Friday, June 30 - Monday, July 4, 2017. The International Parade will be on Saturday, July 1, 2017. Right now, the City of Chicago has not yet confirmed the route, but we understand that it will be similar to that of the Chicago Holiday Parade that happens on Thanksgiving Day.

Each district will still conduct its own individual convention in the spring, with their own international guest attending. No elections will be held at the spring conventions. District 1-B will be holding its convention the weekend of March 21-22, 2014, and District 1-K's convention will be the following weekend, March 28 and 29.

Even though we are four years away from the convention, there is plenty of work that needs to be done before the convention can begin. Over the past couple of months, volunteers have stepped up to serve as SubCommittee Chairpersons for the variety of committees that make up the MD-1 Host Committee. There will be representation from all the Districts in the State. These District Coordinates will be meeting at the various State meetings such as the MD-1 Forum and State Convention. This will create a better line of communication between the District and the Host Committee.*

Congratulations to both districts, and to all involved in making the 1-BK merger a success! -PID Bud Wahl

As the information about the Host Committee becomes available, regarding the different activities, fund raising projects and positions to help, please take time and look it over. You will find that everyone has that special talent that is needed to serve on the committee. There will be something for everyone to do not only in Chicago, but throughout the State. The success of the committee will take a total State involvement to make it happen.

Please feel free to visit our website or like us on facebook. Both will be updated with the Convention information has it becomes available. If you would like to volunteer and get involved, please contact Lion Steve Anton, PDG …. santonlions@comcast.net or myself, Lion Bob Block, PDG ….. gov8990@aol.com.

family affair! Lions Brian and Tonya Franas brought along their daughters Reyna and Sarah to collect donations and hand out mints. For now, I thank the Lions of Illinois for allowing me to serve as your chairman of this committee. I look forward in showing the world of Lionism …. HOW PROUD the LIONS of ILLINOIS are is serving the LIONS of the WORLD at their 100th Anniversary. -Lion Robert Block, PDG, Chairman

Whenever you go out on Candy Day, you go with no preconceived notions as to weather, people and money you may collect. Well three Lions went out for the first time in a long time to stand in front of a Walgreen Drug Store, after first getting permission from the store manager, who by the way really thinks the Lions are great! The senior Lion decided that he would brave the street, after all that morning he felt invincible! The two female lions decided on the front door where people came and went. And so, with a limited amount of candy, some handmade Candy Day Cans and one Lions Apron which I believe had to be older than “dirt” because it was orange and not the yellow now worn.

young moms, foreign people, men, women and kids. One little child about 6 was with her mom and was asked if her daughter could have some candy. The mom said yes and a roll of mints was given to the daughter with no indication that she had to put something in the can. When the mom and her daughter walked out of the store, the little girl had a dollar bill in her hand, and with a special smile – she handed it to the one lion to be put in the can! That’s what Candy day is all about! The major highlight of the day was when a man came into the parking lot, parked his car and when he walked by he was asked if he could “help the Lions on Candy Day”. He immediately said “yes,” reached into his pocket and pulled out a large roll of money – sorted through it and handed the Lion $20.00 – She freely said she had never received this large a contribution before. The three lions were only there for a little over 2 hours, used up the small amount of candy they had to give, met

The lady lions were truly amazed at the “foot traf-fic” coming and going in the parking lot, into the store and then leaving. Even the assistant store manager’s husband was a lion in the suburbs! Some people who were dressed in their country’s clothing had no idea what Lions were but, when she came back out of the store she presented us with a dollar and her thanks to people such as the Lions! Some people indicated that they would catch us on the way out and about 90% of them did with no further talk on our part! People really do care and want to help in any way they can.

some very nice people who had relatives who were involved with other lions clubs, handed out “palm cards” which told what the Lions did and hopefully made some new friends for next year. Their total collection count in the three cans for the 2 hours they were there was $170.00. It was truly a memorable Candy Day for Mayfair Lion PCC Georg Toft, Lion Ann Elliott and Lion Judy Toft!

In the meantime the Senior Lion on the Street was really working the lights and more often than not more funds were put in his can – mostly dollar bills! He even

Embracing New Ideas Change is a constant in today’s world. Is your club embracing this change? Or, is your club stagnant and stuck in the mud? This session will focus on ways to move forward with new ideas and opportunities for your club.

Presenter: Jim Addington, PDG (1J)

Room: Redbird G

The Goal of this session is to enable those attending to better understand that decision making is a complex process and leadership is challenged to facilitate the process through to a positive end.

Moderator: Clyde Gaffney, PDG (1K) Decision Making the Key to Success

Presenter: Herb Zimmerman, GLT Coordinator 1A Moderator: Steve Willet, VDG 1 (1F)

The session will touch on the three categories of learning as knowledge, skills, and attitude are key factors in decision making. Decision making approaches from the military direct orders model to the team oriented shared decision making approach will be covered. Specific leadership styles such as autocratic, consultative, collaborative will be presented as each is related to decision making.

****************************************** To Touch Lives We Need Funds: Share Your Best Fund Raising Ideas Raising funds is key to providing service to our communities. Does your club or district have a sure fire way to bring in the money? If so, come and share a success story from your club. If not, then just listen and borrow a great idea from another club. It just might be that another club’s idea can be tweaked to make a profit for your club.

Many times the need for decision making is related to developing creative solutions to problems. We will address brainstorming as one method of moving from problem identity to a solution decision. To be effective the brainstorming method must be planned. The Delphi Decision Making Process will be reviewed and discussed.

Room: Beaufort Presenter: Lydia Ellis, CC (1CN) Moderator: Dave Hanson, DG (1A) Session 7: 3:30-4:15

Often, organizations such as school districts, city governments, and charitable, service, and fraternal organizations must operate within the limits and requirements of laws, agency policies, and requirements of adopted constitution and by-laws documents. We will discuss the type

of decision making that we work with in the Lions at the District, State and International levels.

A Special Video Presentation from MD1 Alert Once you watch this Video you will never go back to your life not following Safety Rules and Short Cuts!

Those attending will each receive a resource packet of material related to different styles of decision making. Room: Redbird G Presenter: Dr. Steven Breckom, VDG (1H) Moderator: Pat Gaffney, RC (1K) ****************************************** Using Social Media to Enhance Service Can using Facebook really build your club and provide more service to your community? You bet’cha! When it comes to meeting challenges, our response is simple: WE SERVE! In 208 countries and geographical locations, in hospitals and senior centers, in regions battered by natural disaster, in schools and eyeglass recycling centers, Lions are doing community volunteer work, helping, leading, planning and supporting. Because we're local, we can serve the unique needs of the communities we live in. And because we're global, we can address challenges that go beyond borders. We want everyone to see a better tomorrow. That's why we support sight programs and services including vision screenings, eye banks and eyeglass recycling. Provide eye care services to those at risk of losing their sight. And raise donations through campaigns like SightFirst and Campaign SightFirst II.

We believe everyone deserves a healthy life. From providing health programs that focus on hearing loss to supporting efforts to control and prevent diabetes, and most recently measles, Lions volunteers are working to improve the health of children and adults around the world. We empower the next generation. Whether it's providing youth volunteer opportunities and leadership experiences in a Leo club or sharing a message of peace through our Peace Poster contest, our youth programs invest in the future by reaching out to young people. We serve local communities - and protect the planet. From performing hands-on community work and service projects to providing emergency assistance, our community and environment programs improve our communities - and protect the environment.
