From the Head of School 2016–2017
Choosing courage over comfort. It’s what the best creative minds do. And it’s why we, as educators, are in the profession we’re in—to successfully prepare today’s young generation to be tomorrow’s problem solvers and leaders. At Trinity, we build sharp intellects and compassionate hearts. Here, our students establish critical skills to become informed, thoughtful citizens by using their strong sense of empathy and responsibility. Learning is carefully designed to not only provide access to knowledge, but to give students the tools to use it effectively. Trinity teachers know learning is most effective when students are engaged in active, authentic experiences for which they have interest and passion. This is the whole premise behind the design-thinking movement, and it is why we have embraced it so deeply. Design thinking is about creating new solutions to real-world problems, and making the transition from knowing to doing. Last year, we saw the successful integration of design-infused innovative thinking into curricula—across multiple core subjects, capstone classes, and tailored after-school programming. Although our two in-house makerspaces inspired all kinds of innovation—from 3D design and printing to stop motion animation—creativity wasn’t confined to the D-Lab. It was everywhere. We were inspired last year by the creative work of our Trinity community. Whether it was the students’ performance in the classroom, in the studio, or on the stage; the teachers delivering engaging instruction; or the parents sharing their talents planning events, decorating the campus, or fundraising to support Trinity programs, the creative spirit was felt by all. That inspiration is why we saw our most successful year in annual giving. That inspiration is why I am once again reminded of God’s invisible grace that fills our halls and strengthens our community. I am truly honored to share this report as it illustrates the many ways creativity is personified in our community every day. As you turn the pages, I hope you feel as proud to be a Trinity community member as I am. After all, it is you—our students, teachers, staff, parents, grandparents, alumni, trustees, and friends—who make Trinity so very special. And, for that, I am forever grateful. Faithfully,
Marie H. Kidd Head of School

community
CRE AT I V I T Y IS…
The contagious energy of our community is seen and felt in our classrooms, on our playing fields, and in the broader community we serve. Whether it’s the genuine care we show one another or the warmth and friendliness that exudes from each and every person, the Trinity community is truly one-of-a-kind. A simple hug from an eighth grader to his kindergarten buddy, the enthusiastic voices of our students, parents, faculty, and staff as they sing “A World of Difference” in Chapel, the supportive cheers of a teammate during Trinity Olympics—it’s these special moments, and the people around us, that make Trinity a place where all children and families feel happy, welcomed, supported, included, and above all, loved.

The strength of community. Trinity is sustained by the continuous support of our community. A sincere “thank you” to each faculty and staff member, parent, trustee, grandparent, alumni, and special friend—past and present—who gave their time, talent, and treasure last year.
“We have been in love with this school since our son began in kindergarten. The faculty and staff really develop and grow the children into wonderful, independent-thinking young adults. The Trinity community truly is family. We are proud to be part of this school.” – Kathy Erben, Parent of 2017 graduate

Through authentic, relevant learning experiences, Trinity students think differently, take risks, and act boldly. Whether engaging in writing workshops, reading a book of their choosing for class, or conferring with peers about how to solve a problem, they open their minds and do the hard work. They become the scientists. They become the writers. They become the mathematicians. Their diverse perspectives and out-ofthe-box thinking fuels new ideas beyond imagination. From inventive playground designs at DesignFest to captivating poems at the Poetry Cafe to ideas for improving Trinity's carpool system at the Innov8 Festival, there are no boundaries for our students. They are taught to think for themselves, which in turn, drives courageous expression.

The foundation of courage. The Trinity Leadership Council (TLC) is comprised of those courageous donors who have given or pledged lifetime totals of $50,000 or more to the school. It is the continued support of the TLC that allows us to dream, design, and construct a strong foundation on which many future dreams will be built. We are honored to recognize these very important donors, and welcome into this generous and supportive group our new members listed in red. Trinity Leadership Council $1,500,000+

Trinity was created in the truest spirit of philanthropy and innovation. Our founders were mothers, fathers, grandparents, and educators who started small and dreamed big. Today, we are in an extraordinary position of helping shape the future of so many young men and women thanks to the generous and courageous path set forth by our founders. Our school has flourished quickly, but with a solid foundation and a deep commitment to the mission and core values that guide us each day.

Our Episcopal identity is the foundation for who we are and all we do. At Trinity, matters of faith are not boxed into Chapel or religion classes. Rather, an intangible spirit is infused into all aspects of school life. In the classroom, we approach problem solving by teaching our students to look, listen, and question before identifying a solution. We encourage them to brainstorm, build on their ideas, and go back to the drawing board if needed. In Chapel, we are reminded daily to love others as God loves us. We balance reflection and prayer with action to deepen understanding of ourselves and those around us, and strengthen our ability to create change in our community and the world. We seek to celebrate not just our similarities, but our differences. Through service to others, we explore social justice issues and their role in the local and global community. We volunteer with our local food bank, team up with Mobile Loaves and Fishes to prepare and deliver meals, mentor underserved children through Horizons AustinTrinity, and so much more.

Meet Our New Chaplain “I am passionate about certain issues (stewardship of creation, community development, and servant leadership/service learning), but my real passion rests with the students. Being in relationship with them as they grow and mature, equipping them with the spiritual, moral, and ethical foundations so they can successfully engage the challenges they will all face. I want them to know every day that they are loved, valued, amazing gifts from God who, once they discern their calling in the world, can have the foundation to be who God created them to be.” – The Reverend Canon Ken Malcolm, Chaplain

CRE AT I V I T Y IS…
“The most impactful learning moments are the ones where students have a personal stake in the curriculum. They design the scope of their project, set goals, and, in the end, get to make something— often out of nothing—and reveal it to the world.” – Sarah Venkatesh, Middle School faculty and D-Lab visionary

Inspiring innovation. A N IGHT TO SH I N E FU N D-A-N E E D
2016 Update | Learning by Design With the generosity of parents, teachers, and students toward the 2016 A Night to Shine Fund-a-Need initiative, the D-Lab space and program are more vital, more applicable, and more inspiring than ever. The support enabled Trinity to transform a modest, movie-making corner in a computer lab into two separate makerspaces outfitted with the D-Lab mantra in mind—design, dream, discover. D-Lab is a place where diversity of thought and creativity thrive. It encourages students to empathize and share perspectives, leading to better decision making and problem solving. Many thanks to our entire community for inspiring endless curiosity, the “thinking with our hands mentality, and the physical actualization of ideas using a combination of digital and analog tools.

2017 Initiative | The Natural Classroom Outdoor classrooms promote creative scientific exploration and observations of realworld phenomena, engaging the mind and soul, and encouraging a healthy interaction between nature and society. Thanks to the incredible success of the 2017 A Night to Shine Fund-a-Need initiative and the over $40,000 raised, these donors will help realize the dream of providing students an outdoor garden, compost center, rainwater collection system, shaded outdoor classroom, and related science equipment. CRE AT I V I T Y IS‌
YET COM PASSIONATE
Competition teaches our students many lessons—teamwork, dedication, passion, success, failure, and so much more. While there are many challenges along the way, one thing remains clear: Trinity studentathletes represent our school with pride, compete at the their best level, and most important, demonstrate a mutual respect for their competitors. Whether it’s hitting a homerun for our brand new baseball team, swimming the formidable butterfly to help the team win the relay, or going for gold at Model UN or the Math Pentathlon, competition and compassion are seen everywhere at Trinity.

captivating
CRE AT I V I T Y IS…
Imagination is woven throughout Trinity's curriculum and appears in many forms. Our Specials, Electives, and Fine Arts programs draw inspiration from masterpieces in literature, visual art, music, and theatre; and provide space and support for students’ creativity to take flight. The boldness expressed in their works—on stage, on paper, in Chapel, and on our walls—bring great pride to our community each and every day.

SAY I NG H E LLO TO TH E CL ASS OF 2025
Last year, Trinity's Class of 2025 took its first steps on a nine-year journey toward graduation. Although just 5 years old, they were more than ready for the challenge. They approached each learning experience—from growing vegetables in the Kindergarten Garden, to building chick habitats, to performing onstage—with a sense of eagerness and innocence that continuously inspires us to live fearlessly and let our creative spirits soar. Alumni Spotlight: Miranda Weber ‘15 Miranda Weber is still in high school, but you wouldn’t know it by all she’s done to preserve biodiversity on our planet. Last summer, she and 10 other students embarked on a research expedition with Operation Wallacea. They traveled to Guyana, to the heart of the vast Guiana Shield forest, which is one of the last strongholds of intact tropical rainforest left on the planet. After several days of training with scientists, Miranda and her peers went into the jungle to conduct biodiversity surveys, analyzing every kind of flora and fauna as well as conducting annual monitoring that tracks the growth and regeneration of the forest itself. Scientists will use Miranda’s data to drive trends and focus conservation efforts going forward. Her work will undoubtedly shape the future of our planet, making it a better place for us all.
Tornado Club While at Trinity, our students learn the importance of giving back with their time, talents, and treasure. We are proud of the 2016-2017 Tornado Club alumni who have given $10 per year since graduation. State of the School 2016–2017
Trinity began with a dream and a plan. Creative by design. The creative dream—an independent school grounded in the core values of a Christian Foundation, Enriched Academic Excellence, Diverse Community, and Family Commitment. The planned design—Trinity Episcopal School, where we nurture each child academically, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, honoring each child’s spirit for learning and life, ever mindful that we are all children of God. That spirit of dreaming and planning, of creating and designing, has allowed Trinity to flourish over the past 18 years, and it continues to inform our collective work today. I am honored to serve our community as Chair of the Board of Trustees, supporting Trinity in its efforts to prepare today’s students to be tomorrow’s leaders. With input from Trinity faculty, staff, parents, and students, your Board recently updated the school's strategic plan, focusing on student experience, educational leadership, community, sustainability, and stewardship. We also adopted a new campus-wide master plan, working to fulfill our responsibility to provide exceptional educational opportunities for current and future students. Throughout these efforts, we have been dreaming and planning, creating and designing. We are excited to work with the Trinity community on implementing these important initiatives. The future of Trinity Episcopal School is exceptionally bright. On behalf of the Trinity Board of Trustees, thank you for your continued support of our school and its students, faculty, and staff. In service,
Milam Newby Chair, Board of Trustees
“The state of Trinity Episcopal School is strong. Let me revise that … the state of our school is exceptional.” –Milam Newby, Board Chair

Preparing for the Future In January 2015, Trinity purchased a 2.1-acre parcel of land adjacent to the east side of the school’s campus. We then asked the community to dream big, think strategically, and help us design a future that best supports our mission and serves our students. To that end, Trinity has worked diligently to update our five-year strategic and master campus plans. We are now well positioned to begin the preparations for future capital improvements. Be watching for more information.
Strategic Plan: The Next Chapter It is only through thoughtful, strategic planning and hard work that we can effectively respond to the ever-changing needs of our students, faculty, and physical spaces while maintaining the identity and traditions that are uniquely Trinity. We have four areas of focus to guide us in developing the next chapter in Trinity’s story:
1
Student Experience
2
Educational Leadership

“I’ve never heard Clayton say no when asked to serve, “While my time on the Board has fallen short in length, it and she always does it with a smile and zeal that has been bountiful in quality. I accepted your generous makes it fun to work with her. I'm lucky to have gotten invitation hopeful that I would learn more about how to know her over the last seven years as a mom, independent schools are run, what a religious education neighbor, Trinity Board member, Trinity volunteer, has to offer in the 21st century, and best practices for lawyer, ranch girl, and friend.” –Robyn Malloy school and Diocesan relationships. And indeed, you have taught me all manner of such things.”
Gavin Gray “There’s no question of Gavin’s loyalty to Trinity and commitment to his family. Be it around campus, bringing an after-school snack to his boys on the sidelines, or in the boardroom, Gavin always makes sure to be there when you need him.” –Dan Ahearn
David Middleton “Why we love David: His steadfast support, leadership, and guidance on the Master Planning committee, pointing us in the right direction for Trinity’s future. His thoughtful and insightful questions and comments to help move the strategic plan forward. His dedication to his girls as witnessed every morning as they pour out of the car and into school.” –Michelle Cline
Kyndel Bennett: “Our successes as a school over the past few years are a testament to Kyndel's leadership and success as our Chair. Our school has thrived because of Kyndel's wisdom, counsel, and most of all, his passion for Trinity. I will miss him as our leader, but am thankful to call him my friend.” – Milam Newby
