Report from the Head of School

Report from the Board of Trustees Chair

Dear Families and Friends of the Trinity Community,

Dear Trinity Community,

What an exciting year this has been! The highlight was our dual accreditation by Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) and Southwest Association of Episcopal Schools. After completing an extensive self-study and documentation of adherence to standards, a visiting team composed of independent school teachers and administrators came to campus for three days to observe classes, and visit with teachers and staff to verify the information we provided in our documents. It was affirming to hear the accolades from colleagues at the recent ISAS Heads’ Meeting where we were unanimously approved for membership.

As we begin our fifteenth academic year at Trinity Episcopal School, we reflect back on the history of our vibrant school. Jane Hill, with the support of visionary founding families created a school committed to Each Child, Each Day and the core values of academic excellence, family, diversity and a Christian foundation. Our community of wonderful teachers, administrators, families, and students has lived those values at Trinity since our first class in 1999. Pat Adams, our Head of School since 2009, has achieved much in her commitment to our mission and core values. During her tenure, Pat helped raise almost $16 million, oversaw the construction of three new buildings, and led us through an outstanding accreditation effort that demonstrated our multi-dimensional excellence. Pat will retire at the end of this academic year and we are incredibly grateful for all that she has done for Trinity. Thank you Pat!

We received commendations in numerous areas from the visiting team including: evidence of living our mission and core values; an intentional commitment to our Episcopal identity; diversity reflected in inclusive and welcoming attitudes; energetic, collegial, and professional teachers who care deeply about their students; our professional learning community which supports adult growth as well as student growth; our students who are encouraged to take risks in numerous ways throughout the day; a beautiful, well-maintained campus; and focused committed leadership at all levels. It is clear that our community is passionate about our people and our programs and that we are an exemplary school.

In the song, Turn Turn Turn, written by Pete Seeger in the 1950’s, he based the lyrics on a passage from Ecclesiastes 3.1, “To Everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven.” So it is for stages of life. I will complete my 44th year in education at the end of the 2013-2014 school year. My life has been immeasurably enriched by my time at Trinity and I am happy to end my career at such an amazing school. Trinity is in an excellent position to welcome a new leader to guide us into the future. Warmly, Pat Adams

Maryann Bell

Pat Adams

As a result of the generosity of our community, our fundraising efforts were exceptional. Who can forget the success of our Disco party at A Night to Shine with the plentiful polyester and go-go boots; Annual Fund surpassed our goal; and Trinity Tomorrow, Completing the Vision contributions totaled nearly $16m at the end of the year. We are moving forward with the field and working through the permitting process with the City of Westlake Hills. A “home-field advantage” is in our near future, and planning for a second gym continues.

We began the search for a new Head of School over the summer. Todd Hanna is leading the search committee and will provide thoughtful communication to all of our constituencies during this process. This is an exciting time for our community and we encourage all to meet our candidates when they visit our campus. Over the summer, we have continued progress on our campus build-out. We completed the acquisition of the second parcel of land needed to build our athletic field and we are actively engaged in the permitting process with the City of Westlake Hills. We continue to raise the funds for this project and our board is committed to approving spending only when funds to cover costs have been raised. For this school year, the board unanimously selected our leadership team that includes Todd Hanna, Chair-Elect; Gavin Gray, Vice Chair; Jeff McDowell, Treasurer; Vicky Gregg, Secretary; and Mike Wyckoff, who will serve as our Clergy member. We welcome three new members: Victor Alcorta, Erin Peloquin and Milam Newby. We appreciate all who serve and look forward to the engagement of our newest members. We also offer gratitude to four retiring trustees who have each offered invaluable service to our school. Many thanks to Marty McCartt, Miles Brandon, Wilson Allen and Alejandro Ruelas. The beginning of school is always an exciting time for the Trinity community. We feel energized for a new school year. As we begin this school year, we are particularly grateful for all who have served as leaders, educators and champions of Trinity Episcopal School. Our school’s future is bright. Best Regards, Maryann Bell

Report from the Board of Trustees Treasurer 2012-13 brought continued growth to Trinity, with enrollment and the operating budget both increasing. In spite of the growth and change, Trinity finished another year with a balanced budget. The school started the year with a strong balance sheet and finished the year with an even stronger one. Throughout all of this, the Administration’s fiscal management continues to impress. In board meetings, the Trustees regularly reflect on Trinity’s mission and strive to support that mission with our expenditures. With that in mind, we continued to invest heavily in Trinity’s most valuable asset, our faculty and staff. Over 76% of your tuition dollars are spent on faculty and staff. We also increased the amounts spent on financial aid and professional development. In addition, we continued last year’s precedent of investing in the school’s financial sustainability. In practice this means contributing money to the school’s endowment fund and facility maintenance reserves, as well as retiring debt. In response to the Strategic Plan’s goal of long-term sustainability, we have institutionalized this practice, and it will serve to strengthen the long-term financial health of Trinity.

The Board of Trustees, the Finance Committee, and the Administration work hard to manage Trinity’s finances in a fiscally prudent manner. This year we were pleased to have outside validation of these efforts in the form of multiple commendations from the ISAS accreditation team on Trinity’s financial oversight.

Jeff McDowell

2012-13 was another exciting and successful year at Trinity, and I am confident that next year will bring more of the same!

Trinity Tomorrow, our capital campaign, is taking the school’s facilities to the next level. Thanks to our extremely generous community, we have raised nearly $16 million since launching the campaign in January 2009. We have completed our parking project, the 6th-8th grade academic building, the dining hall, and Jane Hill Hall, our new chapel and performing arts facility. We have also acquired two key pieces of real estate which will enable us to develop a full-size athletic field as the campaign progresses. Rarely do individuals have the opportunity to be part of building an institution that will impact the lives of children and families for years to come. Our deepest thanks to the following visionary donors who are helping us create the Trinity of Tomorrow. $1,000,000+ The Durant Family Foundation Trinity Board of Trustees

Annual Fund - Each Child, Each Day

More than just a slogan, this notion illustrates Trinity’s commitment to our students. Each day, we dedicate ourselves to providing the most challenging and fulfilling educational experience to each Trinity student. All gifts to the Annual Fund play a significant role in supporting our students by providing exceptional faculty and programs, plus equipment and materials which ensure the margin of excellence that makes our school unique. Faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, trustees, alumni (and their parents) and friends of the school participated in this effort. Together, we have accomplished great things: •

We surpassed our financial goal by raising more than $600,000

100% of Trinity’s faculty, staff and trustees made a gift to the Annual Fund

Parent participation in the Annual Fund reached 99%

Grandparents contributed more than $60,000 of the total raised

Trinity is sincerely grateful to the following donors to the 2012-2013 Annual Fund campaign. You helped fund our mission to provide an exceptional experience for Each Child, Each Day. Trinity alumni often come back to campus to attend events. Volunteering as ‘Couselors in Training’ at Camp Trinity, joining the festivities at Holiday Happenings, and visiting with fellow alums and faculty at annual gettogethers are among the activities that keep our Trinity alums engaged in our community.

Endowment is the ultimate source of long-term security for an institution because it provides a secure source of money that will always be available for designated needs. In addition to stability, endowments also allow for flexibility in meeting the ever-changing needs of an educational institution. Endowment

Grandgivers

The Grandgivers Club honors those grandparents (and great-grandparents) of 2012-2013 Trinity students who contributed $500 or more to the 2012-2013 Annual Fund. We treasure all gifts from grandparents at any level as these gifts are expressions of the value placed on a Trinity education for their grandchildren.

The General Endowment Established in 2002 by the Board of Trustees to accommodate undesignated gifts to the School. The funds are to be used to meet the School’s most pressing needs as determined by the Board of Trustees. The Jack Webster Grigsby Foundation The President’s Endowment Fund Established in 2003 in honor of past-president AnnMarie Kocher as a means of honoring all presidents of the Board of Trustees for their service to the School. The Financial Assistance Endowment Established in 2004 for the purpose of benefiting students who qualify for admission and demonstrate financial need. The Watson Endowment for Excellence Established in 2005 by the Watson Family for Trinity’s continued excellence through focused research, meaningful measurement and national benchmarking. The Arzonetti-McClure Fund for Faculty Travel Established in 2006, this dedicated fund supports faculty travel by expanding their experiences through advanced professional development.

2013 A Night to Shine Sponsors DANCING QUEEN Anne Moore Texas Capital Bank

Trinity’s spring gala, A Night to Shine – Oh What a Night, was a special evening of community building. All of the proceeds from this event directly enhanced our 2012-2013 Financial Assistance and Faculty Professional Development programs which are core to Trinity’s mission and values. Over 475 guests attended in their finest disco duds to enjoy an al freso reception and silent auction; a dinner and live auction program in the Studio 54-style gym; and cut a rug to the best 1970’s beats. Proceeds exceeded $320,000 while a great time was had under the disco ball. In 2012-2013, more than 13% of our student body received tuition assistance totaling $664,793, helping to maintain a socio-economically diverse community. Faculty development opportunities provided in-depth learning experiences and new teaching techniques for our faculty, including ideas on how to innovate curriculum and deeper study of specific disciplines. A Night to Shine relies on the many volunteers and generous donors who give their time, talent and financial support. We thank all of those who contributed to making this year’s A Night to Shine such a success.

Mission and Core Values At Trinity Episcopal School, we will nurture each child academically, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. We will honor each child’s spirit for learning and life, ever mindful that we are all children of God. This mission statement is the reflection of our clear and continued commitment to the four Trinity values:

NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION US POSTAGE PAID AUSTIN, TX PERMIT NO. 2744

Christian Foundation Trinity Episcopal School embraces Christian values, and incorporates time for discussing the implications of our faith in historical, spiritual and personal ways. At Trinity, the teachings of Christ are modeled and educated. This fosters the child’s ability to make moral and ethical decisions. Students at Trinity attend chapel daily. Enriched Academic Excellence Trinity Episcopal School provides a challenging, comprehensive and highly enriched academic program. The curriculum is tailored to personalized development. Students are served through small classes, master teachers, and a safe and disciplined environment.

A Diverse Community Trinity Episcopal School is ethnically, culturally, religiously, and socio-economically enriched. This diversity offers the entire community an invaluable opportunity for learning, by exploring differences and discovering and building on commonalities. Family Commitment Trinity Episcopal School encourages and motivates students, parents, faculty, and staff to take active roles in the life of the school. This involvement in children’s education is integral to healthy development and academic success. Contributions of time and talent are welcomed.

Trinity Episcopal School admits students of any race, color, religion, national, and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the School. It does not discriminate in the administration of any policy or program. Trinity Episcopal School is incorporated as a not-for-profit organization. The Annual Report acknowledges contributions and volunteer participation for the period of July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013. Although every effort was made to ensure that these listings are accurate, there may be errors or omissions. Please contact the Development Office regarding corrections.
