When I was in the Baylor Executive MBA program, my employer was beginning to expand globally, specifically starting operations in China. A lot of what we were studying at Baylor focused on THE GLOBAL ASPECTS OF BUSINESS. The timing couldn’t have been better for me. I ended up going to China twice in a month – once with my Baylor class and once for my employer, which is an example of how closely aligned the program was to the business. > Study with other executives

Be Curious.
W
by Kathy Bell Hargrave
I have always been curious by nature. As a writer and interviewer words and questions are my passion.
hen people ask me, ‘why a female editor for a men’s magazine?’ I reply with the obvious question – Who could be more curious about men than a woman? In his book, It’s Not What You Sell, It’s What You Stand For, Roy Spence suggests that curiosity is one of the basic principles of purpose-based leadership. He cites “curiosity in action” as looking beyond the obvious, learning and questioning everything about the competition and the customer. It is the curious ones who seek the truth. Roy also wears a pedometer as a curiosity meter. If he hasn’t walked 10,000 steps a day, he says he hasn’t been curious enough. I have always been curious by nature. As a writer and interviewer, words and questions are my passion. This very welcome journey into the world of the opposite sex begins with this issue of Austin Man. Roy Spence represents the quintessential Austin man. He loves everything ‘Austin’ from the landscape to the people to a strong bond with the University of Texas. I was curious to learn how one of the most successful and colorful personalities in Texas and advertising, built his agency from scratch and what made him tick. Exactly what is the Roy Spence brand? I wanted to learn from the expert what brands the Austin man. There is also an entrepreneurial spirit in Austin that people are curious about, so we tapped into four Austin Spirit Makers to learn their thoughts and secrets. Tito is the acknowledged forerunner, leading the way for bold moves by Chad Auler, Tom Nall and Daniel Barnes to develop innovative brands such as Republic Tequila, Treaty Oak Rum, Waterloo Gin, Deep Eddy Vodka flavored tea and Savvy Vodka. 12 AT X M A N

In each issue we hope to bring our readers entertaining and enlightening information for and about Austin men. We have assembled a group of Austin insiders and columnists that share our love of and curiosity about the great city we call home. From sports to clothing to investments to real estate to must – see places and must – do events to people to know and ways to get fit and stay healthy, we cover the ATX waterfront from Lady Bird Lake to Lake Austin to Lake Travis and everything in between. Knowing that men are curious about the women in their lives, we have also included the perspective of the opposite sex and some music for your ears in the luring siren songs of ATX female singer/songwriters. In Roy’s words, “The spirit of Austin fosters and celebrates creativity and encourages entrepreneurial types to take a risk and try something new. We are a city of dreamers with big ideas.” The journey of 10,000 steps begins here. Hopefully we have been curious enough. Money, sex, fast cars, sports, good food, great music, women – what piques your curiosity? Let us know. We will be listening.

I can honestly say that this has been both one of the scariest things I have ever done and absolutely the most exciting adventure I’ve ever embarked upon.
Dear ATXMAN Readers,
O
ver the years, I have enjoyed watching austinwoman magazine grow. As my wife Melinda and I made the rounds to events, parties, seminars, etc. all over Austin, rarely was there an occasion when we were NOT approached by a man (and more than a few women) who were quick to compliment AW and its success celebrating women in Austin, but always followed by a single question: “When are you going to do this for the MEN in Austin?” Our response was always the same and delivered with a wincing smile …“Well, you never know!” Until recently, that is, when we were FINALLY able to give the answer these men were looking for – and one that I had been wanting to give for several years ... “Glad you asked – we are launching ATXMAN – Austin Man Magazine in June 2011!”
With the hard copy of the magazine, we are also launching an iPad/iPhone app which will be available on the App Store June 1st. Additionally, we have developed a new website (atxman.com) and will be updating content regularly to keep you connected and informed. Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter @ austintxman. We want to be everywhere you are. I can’t say this is where I thought life would take me – as I am fairly new to the publishing business, but I can tell you that it has been exciting and affirming to receive the outpouring of positive response that has flowed in the last few months – and that’s without the actual magazine in hand. I can’t wait to get your feedback on what we have developed for the “other half” of Austin. After putting this first issue to bed, I can honestly say that this has been both one of the scariest things I have ever done and absolutely the most exciting adventure I’ve ever embarked upon. Thanks to all of you who have asked over the years: “When are you going to do this for us? What about the MEN in Austin?” Our Time is Now!

contributors Austinites are passionate about their city, and I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to photograph them and learn more about the home we love!
ERIC DOGGETT
Unlike other photographers, Eric Doggett didn’t start shooting when he was three years old. In fact, it was at the age of 33 when he first picked up a camera and began learning everything he could about photography. After a few years of shooting weddings and families, Eric moved into commercial
photography where he now looks for ways to combine ideas, lighting and processing to create fun, highimpact images (with a little bit of humor thrown in). When he’s not shooting for clients, Eric enjoys spending time with his wife Lisa and his two sons Brandon and Trevor. You can see more of his work at doggettstudios.com.

Davis Cup The List:
by john mcintosh
July 8-10, Frank Erwin Center
When Andy Roddick returns to Austin from Wimbledon, he’ll have some huge names - Rafael Nadal and Jim Courier to start - and about 15,000 enthusiastic fans making the trek with him. The attraction making Austin a tennis mecca is a Davis Cup quarterfinal match using tennis between the United States and top-ranked Spain at the Frank Erwin Center. Roddick lobbied hard for years to get Austin its first-ever contest in the 111-year-old tournament, the first on American soil in two years and first in Texas since 2002. Tickets for all three days sold out almost instantly in April, but can be purchased through ticket resale sites for anyone willing to part with a minimum of a few hundred dollars. Pricey? Of course, but for tennis buffs, the chance to see one of Roddick’s bullet train serves delivered on his home turf is worth it. 18 AT X M A N

Josh O
Frank By Chad Swiatecki
pening a drive-in movie theater will make a man out of you quick - just ask Josh Frank, founder and owner of Austin’s Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-In Theatre. “I’m a fix-it man now, way more than I ever used to be,” he says with a laugh, admitting that before opening the East Chavez site last summer, he was far more of an artist than a handyman. “I know about electrical circuits and wiring stuff and pretty much taught myself how to take apart and retrofit our speakers. I had to learn about different voltages and soldering in a very DIY way. I probably do it wrong, but it ends up working.”
Recreating Movie Nostalgia – Austin Style
What Frank has created is an exciting pocket on the edge of East Austin that’s become a haven for local movie buffs. For roughly the price of a pair of first-run movie theater tickets, patrons get the retro experience of pre-movie shorts, a vintage speaker on the car window and a mix of classic and quirky movies shown by a staff that cares about every piece of the movie-going experience. Describing the Blue Starlite lot located behind Austin’s Starving Artist studios (which he also manages) Frank says, “There’s something whimsical and DIY about it and it’s got a special energy to it. Decorated with antique
children’s cars, posters and wall paintings, the lot provides a distinct island of misfit toys vibe. “With a set place you can light it in different ways to create a special ambiance and play around with things to create the atmosphere you want.” Frank, a Texas native, attended film school in New York before becoming a published author. At age 35, he bounced between Austin and the Big Apple several times before deciding early last year to open a food trailer on South First Street. Showing movies on the side of the vehicle began as a way to tempt customers to stick around. Gradually Frank’s cinematic love won out. “I scrapped everything about that business that I didn’t like and I was left with showing movies in this open space”.

Orange or Maroon?
it DoesN’t MAtteR BeCAUse A meeting with the owner of the building that now houses Starving Artist Studios gave him some room to play around with movies when he wasn’t managing a team of artists concentrated in one space. What was intended as a one-off drive-in date night with his now fiancé caught the attention of the artists inside, and possibilities began to emerge. “People from the gallery came into the back to see what we were doing and they were really into it,” he said. “That’s when I started realizing this is something that really excited people, and then it shifted gears to something I could do for the public.”

What Frank has created B.J. Myers, DDS is an exciting pocket on the UT/A&M Alum edge of east Austin that’s become a haven for local Hi-tecH dentistry in a comfortable setting. movie buffs. By August of 2010 he was up and running. The Chavez site can now hold 16 cars per showing while a second, occasional location at the East Side Drive-In on Sixth Street can accommodate 24. Encouraged by the interests of a town that’s growing into a film buff mecca in the same way Austin has been drawing musicians for decades, Frank is not slowing down. “I’m looking for perfect space downtown, with more infrastructure and an awesome view that’s just perfect. This is an idea you can take anywhere.”

Entourage: The Complete 7th Season Release date: June 7, 2011
Irish writer Paul Murray’s Skippy Dies (Faber & Faber, $28) takes place at dreary Seabrook College, an all-boys Catholic prep school in Dublin – dreary, that is, until Skippy Juster dies during (but not exactly because he’s a part of) a doughnut-eating contest. Murray then circles back to the particulars of Skippy’s funny, beleaguered and inspired life, with its dramatic first love and epic nerd vs. thug battle. Murray memorably and hilariously evokes life at the age of 14 - not an easy task, given that for so many of us, returning to the age of 14 is akin to drinking castor oil.

Technology in 2011 is all about tablets. I was skeptical at first ... but then I got my hands on an iPad. If you’re still on the fence, here’s why I’m sold: I find that its functionality and portability are an unmatched combination. Roger Hazard, producer of A&E’s Emmy-nominated Sell This House, made a career out of selling homes. Now he’s establishing a new home in Austin and building a full-service design firm that should thrill local homeowners. Moving from New York, Hazard sees an opportunity to tap into what he calls Austin’s “unique energy,” with his venture, Design Hazards. While so many have found reasons for pessimism, the noted designer revels in the enthusiasm of Austinites.

imprint on the decor of his new city, the television personality already sees a lot of attention to design in Austin. In fact, the burly Texas native thinks he can describe a specific characteristic for Austin’s look; a manly one. “Austin has a very masculine aesthetic. There is nothing froofy about it, with a lot of iron and native stone. We are still in the heart of Texas, after all. Combine that with expensive fabrics and materials, and it’s a city that really seems to respond to design.”

About the pairings: “When pairing wines with Chef Bull’s tasting menu, my main goal is to allow each dish to shine its brightest,” said Beverage Director and Sommelier June Rodil. “The wine should be the supporting actor that elevates the protagonist (the dish) into the spotlight...” Course 1: Champagne and Caviar is classic. The spherical bursts of flavor of the caviar are mirrored in the mousse-like bubbles of the Roederer. Plus, Champagne is never a bad choice to start off the meal. It’s fun and wakes up the palate with its lighting-like lift. Course 2: Raw, sashimi grade fish is delicate and pristine. It’s important to find a wine (or beverage in this case) that doesn’t over-power the dish. Divine Droplets tastes like the purest rainwater, tinged with anise and fresh pineapple and enhances the ethereal nature of the Hamachi. Course 3: The snapper dish is open and fresh, like a new spring day. The green notes and Meyer lemon enhance the beautiful fish, so I chose a wine that enhances the green peas and Meyer lemon - a citrus, mineral driven chardonnay from Burgundy. Course 4: Comforting and nostalgic, the beef short ribs calls for something easy to drink, but powerful enough to stand up to rustic short rib, bordelaise and creamy burrata. Casa Ferreirinha (a Portuguese red blend) is an older vintage (‘02), so it drinks smoother, but still has rich fruit and rugged earth components to match the dish.
Course 5: Red meat + Napa Cabernet = Paul Newman. It’s just classic and ageless. The sweet, succulent, sun - kissed fruit matches with the mid-palate sweetness of the smoked caramel and complements the bitterness of the espresso. Course 6: Something a little playful here. Madera (fortified wines from the Madera Islands, near Portugal) is off-dry and mirrors the whimsy of salty-sweet cheese and beer nuts. The saltiness enhances the richness of the cheese, and the sweet, nutty note plays well with the beer nuts. Course 7: It sounds crazy, but you need something really rich with chocolate. It has to be balanced in sweetness and weight, or the chocolate tastes astringent and bitter. Sweeter style Sherries are perfect and have a dried fruit component that goes wonderfully with white chocolate as well.

CAZAMANCE
THE PEACHED TORTILLA
cazamance.com • 512.844.4414
thepeachedtortilla.com • 512.761.3241
90 Rainey St., Austin, TX 78701 MWF: 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. & 6 - 11 p.m. Tu: CLOSED Sa.: 6 p.m. - midnight Su.: 6 - 11 p.m.
The original truck has a spot at Star Bar (600 W. 6th St. 78703) on Fridays and Saturdays 7 p.m. - 3 a.m., but the truck also roams! catering@thepeachedtortilla.com or call if you’d like the truck at your location.
Eating at Cazamance gives you the full trailer experience of community, good food and a friendly Austin vibe under the shade trees. It’s across the street from Clive Bar (where you can order Cazamance and eat there) and smack downtown off Red River and Caesar Chavez in the Rainey District - super-easy to bike to from just about anywhere. Also, Iba is open on Mondays when most trailers are not - so if you’re hunkering for something different and nourishing, I absolutely recommend trying Cazamance at your next trailer outing. The peanut soup is a good option for vegans, and the bunny chow is a hearty meal involving seasoned meat stuffed in bread. Iba uses his creativity and is inspired by his home country of South Africa when developing his weekly menu. Recent options have included cinnamon rosemary smoked brisket and red curry smoked brisket.
Their second location is a trailer which permanently resides near UT at the corner of Guadalupe and Dean Keaton (next to Cream Vintage). The trailer is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. (closed Saturdays/Sundays). Asian/Southern Comfort Street-food fusion is the culinary concept behind the Peached Tortilla. My personal favorite is the pad Thai taco, which fills you up for $3. The pork banh mi is their best-seller which includes Vietnamese braised pork belly, pickled daikon and carrot salad, sriracha mayo and cilantro in a delicious bun. Want fries with that? You’ve got some choices for your dipping sauce: peach mint, truffle mayo, bacon ranch, smoky roasted peach bbq or sriracha mayo. You can catch the Peached Tortilla truck on the move throughout town, or stop by their trailer on campus for a lunch that is easy on the pocket-book, but ranks in high in flavor and quality.

cool drinks on A hot day
Waterside!
by Marshall wright
TOP PICK: Soleil Few things are as rewarding after a long day on the job than a cool place to hang out and have a few drinks with friends. Toss in million - dollar views of the lake and you’ve got a winner every night of the week. So, as prime happy hour season heats up, I stopped by one of Austin’s newest and nicest lakeside watering holes that is sure to become a go-to happy hour spot. Soleil, located in the lakeside Oasis, Texas village at 6550 Comanche Trail is the new Robert Del Grande Italian Mediterranean inspired seafood restaurant overlooking Lake Travis. The elegant dining room is set in soothing water-inspired tones with 180-degree views looking out onto Lake Travis that feels perfect for date night or a more refined happy hour setting. The killer view is from the spacious patio that wraps around three sides of the dining room and adjacent Azure Raw Bar.
Taking our seats on the outside patio, we were immediately rewarded with streaks of orange, blue and red washing across the partly cloudy blue sky – that spectacular sunset the Oasis is known for as we looked out toward Mansfield Dam and Hudson Bend. Immediately, it felt like the perfect spot to unwind after a busy day at work. The happy hour menu is divided into three sections - $3, $5 and $7 options – and is available weekdays from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. The menu kicks off with a selection of three daily handcrafted draft beer choices from upstairs neighbor Uncle Billy’s Brew & Que. Each pint is priced at $3 and with selections ranging from the Agave Wheat, Hill Country Organic Amber, Bottle Rocket Lager, Ax Handle Pale Ale and Hop Zombie IPA, even the pickiest beer drinker will find something they like.

Starting at $5/glass, the happy hour menu boasts a selection of wines by the glass, from Pinot Grigio to Cabernet Sauvignon, along with your choice of three select liquors – Tito’s Vodka, Jim Beam Whiskey and Captain Morgan’s Rum – should you need something a little stronger to kick start your favorite cocktail. The $7 portion of the happy hour menu stays nicely within the Italian - Mediterranean theme of the restaurant with appetizer choices like baba ghanoush, roasted pepper hummus, bruschetta, spicy meatballs, calamari and a cheese plate. After reading through the menu, we started our visit off with a round of cocktails - a Mariner, Spicy Peach Basil Mojito and Blackberry Mojito. By far, the clear winner at our table was the Mariner (see recipe at atxman.com). Whereas, with a traditional margarita, the lead liquor is tequila, the Mariner flips tradition on its head for a modern spin with Grand Marnier stepping out in front. The juxtaposition of components made for a more full-bodied and sweeter take on our beloved marg and we quickly ordered another one. For those who don’t like margaritas, but don’t want to be odd man out when the table gets a round, this will be your way to save face (and probably have the best drink on the table). Mojitos continue to be all the rage, especially this time of year, and we particularly liked the Peach Basil Mojito. Slivers of Fresno peppers added a nice touch of heat that played well against the sweetness of the peach syrup and the herbal notes of basil and mint. If you prefer a sweet drink, the Blackberry Mojito has you covered. I’m a big fan of fried calamari, despite its ubiquitous presence on Austin menus and will order it more often. Soleil’s version was great.

The calamari steaks are marinated overnight in a buttermilk bath and then cut thick, battered and gently fried resulting in melt - in your - mouth tenderness. Creamy garlic aioli and housemade marinara served alongside for dipping complemented the calamari nicely but with just a fresh squeeze of lemon to brighten it up, the condiments weren’t necessary. A deal for seven bucks. Balance when ordering is always a good thing, so finding the right combination of flavors that touch on all the elements of taste - spicy, sweet, sour, salty and umami is important. Especially when enjoying a well - crafted cocktail, you have to be careful not to overpower the food with competing flavors. Something spicy always goes well with a good drink and the spicy meatballs hit the spot perfectly. A mixture of ground pork and beef blended with herbs and red pepper flakes then braised in housemade marinara, the meatballs are finished off with a bubbling blanket of gooey mozzarella cheese. A first cut through the mozzarella split the meatball in half and let the marinara penetrate into the center for the perfect bite. Just as we contemplated another bite, our mouth exploded. With a rush and a kick, our forks went back to the plate for another bite. Then another until we threw in the towel, mouths tingling and reaching for our drinks. Again, seven bucks. Deal. Overall, the happy hour menu offers a little something for everyone with a value that underlies the upscale casual elegance of the restaurant. We look forward to our next visit.

hane Matt, DDS, came to Austin because the trade magazines sold it as a great place to start a dental practice, and because it was a great place for live music. His experience in Texas certainly supports those conclusions. This spring, Dr. Matt found a new way to combine his burgeoning dental practice with his love of local music, hosting a live music event at his downtown office during the annual SXSW festivities. The three-day parallel festival was called “Mouth-by-Mouthwest,” and the name itself was perhaps the biggest impetus behind the show’s creation. “It actually started as a joke,” Dr. Matt recalled, “I was saying that we should have a show called ‘Mouth-by’ and the girls at the office kept talking about it, because the name was so funny. One day, I was telling David Garza about it, and he said we had to put that together. That’s where it came from.” Dr. Matt’s event raised money from donations and bar receipts for HAAM and MusiCares, two organizations that focus money towards healthcare for musicians. It was a natural fit for a dentist who already provides inexpensive dental care for local and traveling musicians. your kiimby card they will donate a percentage of the sale to the charities in your kiimby profile. You will also earn kiimby points that can be redeemed for rewards at other participating businesses. "kiimby is a way for Austinites to shop local, support their local charities and earn rewards for that support," says co-founder, Drew Arnold. Looking to volunteer? Go to Hands On Central Texas for an extensive list of volunteer opportunities that benefit charities in the Austin and Central Texas communities. handsoncentraltexas.org
After one successful festival, Dr. Matt has plans to make Mouth-by a regular part of the Austin landscape. The venue is small, though, so you might need a reservation to get a badge next year. “Actually, we were still seeing patients,” Dr. Matt laughs. “We made ‘all-access’ badges for them. When they finished, they could go upstairs and have a drink, and listen to the music. Hopefully this will become an annual event.” About HAAM: The mission of the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians is to provide access to affordable health care for Austin's low income, uninsured musicians, focusing on prevention and wellness.

Playing a round of golf – outdoor therapy for the ATX Man
BY Katy McIntosh
Austin is home to some of the finest golf courses, not only in Texas, but also in the country. We asked men in Austin where they like to play and came up with a list of six of the best golf courses in Central Texas. Here are the facts, the stats and tips from the pros.
a t x m a n . c o m 37
Austin Country Club
Slope/rating: 75.2/149 | Public/Private: Private Interesting Fact: ACC, which was founded in 1899, is one of the oldest existing clubs in Texas and home to one of the greatest golf instructors who ever lived, Harvey Penick. Penick trained both Tom Watson and Ben Crenshaw on the links at ACC.
Pro Dale Morgan on what makes the ACC course a stand-out: Pete Dye designed a fantastic golf course that gives you nine holes of Scottish links style that plays along side Lake Austin and then brings you to the back nine where you play a more traditional Hill Country type course. Greatest Golf tip: Penick often made the point that golfers should keep it simple and work on one fault at a time. “Go out and have fun,” Penick said. “Golf is a game for everyone, not just for the talented few.”
Club Director Michael Rushing on why you should play here: Barton Creek is the number one golf resort in the state of Texas. Our courses are nationally ranked. The course is both a beautiful and adventurous round of golf. Both the design and terrain are unique. Creeks, streams and ponds figure into play on as many as seven holes. With five different sets of tees, the Foothills course caters to golfers at every level. Rushing’s favorite tip: Play from a set of tees that fits how you hit the ball. Play within your set. Finish balanced and strong at the end of your swing.
Interesting Fact:
Golfweek magazine rates the Foothills #4 among America’s 50 Best Resort Courses. July marks the 25th anniversary of this course.
Slope/rating: 74.0/138 Public/Private: Private, or you can play as a guest of the resort. Cost: Packages start at $249 per person for a one night stay and unlimited golf
BARTON CREEK RESORT & SPA:
FAZIO FOOTHILLS
FALCONHEAD
Slope/rating: 75.0/129 Public/Private: Hybrid Cost: Weekdays: $65, Weekends: $85
Interesting Fact: Falconhead was the first course in Texas designed by the PGA Tour.
Pro Steve Septoski on why you should play Falconhead: It’s a great test for every skill level. Pro Steve Septoski on best tip they’ve ever given or received: The key to great golf is good misses.
GREY ROCK COUNTRY CLUB
Slope/rating: 73.6/131 Public/Private: Hybrid Cost: Mon-Thurs $80, Fri-Sun: $100 (Twilight and 9-hole rates are discounted)
Interesting Fact: The course has equal numbers of dogleg lefts and dogleg rights. You’ll be using every club in your bag. On some of the par-3s you can use longer irons or even woods. The 2011 Austin Open was played here in April. Brian Novoa won with a 2-round total score of 139.
General Manager and Director of Golf Chip Gist, PGA Professional: Why play at Grey Rock? Grey Rock offers the best, classic-style golf course in Austin and hands-down, the best service, staff and atmosphere of any golf experience in the Texas Hill Country. My philosophy is clear. When customers come here to play golf, I want to create the conditions for them to relax and have fun. It’s as simple as that. Best golf tip ever given or received: Practice putting as much as you practice your full swing. Use your sand wedge for more than just the sand. Tee the ball lower in the wind.
RIVER PLACE COUNTRY CLUB
Golf Professional Steve Darby talks about Hancock: Hancock is a gorgeous little course. It’s an oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle of downtown. It’s challenging, but forgiving enough to be fun. Best tip: Harvey Penick said to me, ‘Steve, go play as little golf as you can.’ He meant that I should take as few strokes as I can and play efficiently. Interesting Fact: Established in 1899, Hancock Golf Course stands today as the oldest golf course in the state of Texas.
Slope/Rating: 65.2/112 Public/Private: Public Cost: Weekday: $12.00 for nine holes, $19.50 for 18 holes, Weekend: $13.00 for nine holes, $21.50 for 18 holes
HANCOCK GOLF COURSE
Slope/rating: 72.2/135 | Public/Private: Private Interesting Fact: River Place underwent a multimillion dollar course renovation in the mid 1990’s by Tom Kite and Roy Bechtol.
Head Golf Professional Chris de Keratry on why he plays at River Place: The more you play River Place, the more you enjoy River Place. Every single shot is memorable and you can never get bored playing the course. The course challenges you, but at the same time, gives you lots of opportunities for birdies. What is the best golf tip you have either given or received: When it comes to full swing, I’d say a good tip for slicers is to simply learn to get the back of your hand and forearm to turn over through impact. The ball will go where the back of the hand is pointed at impact (in a neutral grip). So if you are hitting the ball to the right (for righties), then you’re hitting it with the side of your hand. Your need to really feel the arm and hand turn over on the downswing!

Mayor of

by Debor a h H a milton - Ly nne
On Branding & the Unique Brand that Defines Him, His Business, Austin & the Austin Man
“Brand” is a word that can be used as both a noun (a new brand of cola) and a verb (they branded each calf). While Roy Spence is technically a noun (person, place or thing) most people would agree that “The Reverend Roy” (as he is affectionately known) is truly a verb (action).
a t x m a n . c o m 43
From dawn to the wee hours,
Roy is constantly in motion. At an age when some men would consider slowing down, Roy is ramping up. There aren’t enough hours in the day to expand his horizons – meet new people, gather new ideas. There are not enough days in the week to set in motion all of his ideas, which multiply as he speaks. The Mayor of Idea City has a mission. After four decades building one of the most successful advertising agencies in the country, Roy has added speaking engagements and a project that moves him to “higher ground.” Filled with passion and purpose, he founded the Purpose Institute to help people and organizations discover and live their purpose. His energy and certainty is infectious. In his presence, people become verbs or as Roy likes to say, “doers and dreamers and no in-betweeners.”
Roy is well-known and often chided for his enthusiastic ‘Royisms’ which he delivers with the zeal of a fundamentalist preacher: W a l k t h e w a l k . Ta l k t h e ta l k . D r i n k t o n i g h t f o r t o m o r r o w w e r i d e at d aw n . T h e r e ’ s a ‘ c a n ’ i n e v e r y ‘ c a n ’ t.’ Grow big by ac ting sm all . We are not in the a dvertising business. We are in the idea business. Id e a s a r e t h e c u r r e n c y o f t h e 2 1s t c e n t u r y.
He takes it all in stride and is well known for his antics as well as a creative sense of humor. Roy Spence just can’t help himself. He was born to communicate and to help people articulate their purpose, live life with gusto and make a difference in the world. Growing up in the small town of Brownwood, Roy learned what the Spence brand stood for – love of family, Texas, country and people in general; hard work and compassion; recognizing and combining unique strengths and passions to honor your calling. He learned about leadership and teamwork as the quarterback of his high school team, taking them to win the state championship in his senior year. He learned compassion and respect for differences from his sister, Susan. Born with spina bifida, she was wheelchair-bound throughout her life. In Brownwood, Roy learned the values that would become the basis for his value-based branding strategies that would define his personal life, as well as his business.
His years at the University of Texas at Austin
shaped his future. There he met the loves of his life –
Mary (his wife of 36 years) and his business partners, Judy Trabulsi,
Tim McClure, Jim Darilek and Steve Gurasich. With no other purpose than to create work that they loved and stay in Austin, GSDM was born over beers at Scholz Beer Garten. Positioning themselves as specialists in the ‘youth market,’ the agency began with no money, no experience and no accounts. The team pitched accounts with enthusiasm and no small measure of naiveté, believing that big ideas could make a difference – a hallmark of the GSD&M brand today. From a humble beginning representing Contessa West dormitories and working on the unsuccessful U.S. Senate campaign of civil rights pioneer Ralph Yarborough, the agency grew to become one of the most successful advertising agencies in the United States, helping brand corporations and industry giants from Southwest Airlines to Walmart to BMW to Dreamworks, to the U.S. Air Force to the PGA Tour and the Clinton Global Initiative. GSD&M campaigns such as “Don’t Mess with Texas” and “The Freedom to Fly” are legendary. In 1997, Idea City was built on the corner of Sixth Street and Lamar, a self-contained, city-within-a-city and a tribute to Austin as a place for visionaries looking to make a difference. The core values, which guide the agency, are literally carved in stone in the rotunda of the post-modern building – Community, Winning, Freedom & Responsibility, Curiosity & Integrity.

Along the way, Roy never met a stranger. In the early 1970s, Roy met a passionate young couple working on the McGovern presidential campaign. They would go on to become President of the United States and Senator from New York as well as Secretary of State. Bill and Hillary Clinton remain two of his closest friends, and he serves them as a trusted advisor. Early this year, Roy accompanied President Clinton to Haiti to assess the situation and continuing needs of the stricken nation. His creativity, loyalty and sense of humor helped Roy make friends of clients including industry giants Sam Walton, Red McCombs and Herb Kelleher. Embracing the credo It’s Not What You Sell, It’s What You Stand For, Roy has written a bestselling book of the same title sharing what he has learned in 40 years in the ad game as well as ways to utilize his purpose- and values-based approach. He has received many awards including Ad Man of the Year and Idea Man of the Century. He is a Distinguished Alumni of the University of Texas and sits on the board of the LBJ Foundation. He is a highly sought-after speaker doing what he loves most – spreading the gospel according to ‘Reverend Roy.’
If the Mayor of Idea City, Roy Spence, were to be a noun or to be branded, it would have to be with words like “joy, passion, purpose, entrepreneurial, creative, driven and visionary.” However, Roy Spence lends himself more to the word “brand” used as a verb. Once you meet him, his intense joy for life is branded in your brain and you can almost hear the sizzle as he leaves his mark.
The Reverend Roy On the Choices You Make in Life: T h e f o l l o w i n g c a m e t o R o y d u r i n g h i s w a l k a c r o s s A m e r i c a :
In life, there are many choices. It seems there are many foods you can enjoy; many friends; many ways to worship. There are many careers and jobs you might enjoy; many ways to raise kids; many sports and activities you can enjoy. There are also many choices in cars, drinks, homes, watches, clothes and yes, even perhaps, many different kinds of people you can love, date and marry. I know that there are those who will argue with some of these analogies. In fact, there are many ways to go through life as we know and live it. There are those, of course, who deeply believe that there is only one way to “have everlasting life” or only one way to “save your soul” or only one way to “find the right soul mate.” I shall not (for I am neither a scholar in these fields nor do I wish to) enter the debate in these highly personal and deeply spiritual and cultural arenas. I want to and I am going to walk – literally – into a discussion of what I am sure is one highly debatable and philosophical arena. I want to go on record that I have not had any kind of formal educational studies in this field, but I have made a lot of “in the field” observations.
You become what you seek. If you seek enemies, they will find you. If you seek hate, it will bring you down. If you seek gossip, it will consume you. If you seek fear, it will follow you all your life. - ORIf you seek friends, you will be befriended. If you seek love, it will lift you up. If you seek the truth, it will set you free. If you seek hope, it will lead you to higher ground.

What Women Really Think About Men & Their Cars
uys and their wheels? You bet, we gals notice; we just act like we don’t. Hello! We just don’t want to look like the golddiggers you already think we are. Expensive cars are nice, but we’d rather you spend your money on us – (I kid, I kid!) Believe me, women rarely overlook the “B” on the front hood, or the SL500 emblem. Drive an expensive car? Rookie girl will start envisioning you taking her to Vegas, the spa, and weekend getaways to Napa, while the more experienced, smart girl will be on guard, looking for signs of a shady pimp, still skeptical of

how you got the money to afford the ride. Believe me, she’ll be watching closely to see if you pay the tab with two credit cards. Of course, the expensive ride rules out even the suggestion of going ‘Dutch.’ Plus, no one goes ‘Dutch’ these days and still gets a second date, right? It’s funny what cars say about us, even if it’s not true. I had to convince people I wasn’t a stripper when I drove my cute little Mitsubishi Eclipse in college. Life isn’t fair, I know. Maybe this is subjective, but let me tell you what these cars say to me:
Mercedes, BMW & Audi: Ah, Europeans, they always get it right. Classy and sophisticated, as long as there are no spinning rims.
Lexus, Infiniti & Camry: Nice guy.
Subaru: So, how often do you listen to Alex Jones?
Mini-van: What the hell are you doing even trying to date?
Tinted Navigator: So, are you tryin’ to go gangsta on me?
If the lady’s savvy, she won’t be too impressed with your wheels. Anyone can lease or borrow a BMW 7 series, and believe me, she started her background check on you long before you picked her up. Why? A lot of us gals know plenty of guys who’ve spent all their cash on some bangin’ wheels, but somehow are still behind on their car insurance payment and live with mom. Some guys still have Daddy payin’ their bills. Or worse, they’re borrowing their dad’s car. (Maybe we should just meet the dad!) Seriously though, that’s why a lot of us don’t get too carried away with what you’re driving. Just sayin’!
Remember this is Austin, not Dallas and whom are you trying to impress? Kim Kardashian? Remember, this is Austin, not Dallas and whom are you trying to impress? Kim Kardashian? Sorry to break it to you, you’re never gonna get a date with her or her sisters. Let it go. Good time gal might like your expensive wheels, but the marrying kind of gal (please don’t run to the hills) wants a sensible guy with a professional car (careful with those 4-door sedans though, they scream pharmaceutical rep or guy going through a divorce). If she’s from South Austin, you’ll get points with a smart car or hybrid (gas guzzlers are sooo 1990’s). And don’t forget the Texas gals who get excited with the sound of a V8 – nothing reeks of testosterone like hot rods and trucks. But you’d better back it up! If you
have a 4-wheel drive truck with an extended cab and 21-inch wheels, please own a ranch. Nothing screams “poser” or “insecure” than a guy with a pickup truck who doesn’t use it to haul hay, haul dirt or haul whatever gear you take on your guy trips. If you don’t, guaranteed she’ll be hauling ass out of there. Okay, now let’s talk about what happens INSIDE the car. (No, you’re not that lucky – yet), I’m talking about car cleanliness. A free, little tip here: PLEASE, before you pick her up, get rid of all those lip glosses and ponytail holders your ‘friends’ have left behind. Tip #2 – she’s spent all day getting dolled-up, so there’s nothing worse than us sitting on a seat covered with dog hair. We love Flaco too, but not on our new dress! Here are the two kinds of car slobs I’ve spotted over the years: The “OMG-he-lives-out-of-his-car” Guy (which is semi-ok if you’re a real mover and shaker in this town). The kinda guy who’s rarely home because he’s running from the boardroom to business luncheons to the gym. We get it, you’re busy and that’s hot. If there’s an instrument case in the trunk or back seat, you are definitely forgiven. Just make sure your place isn’t as messy as your ride. Messy is fine, and in my opinion better than the “OMG-he-eats-atMcDonald’s-twice-a-day” Guy. The stray fries in your cup holder kinda gave it away. Sorry, the trans-fat and dried ketchup on the console don’t rev-up our libido. All jokes aside, though, if you’re an amazing guy who is honest, faithful and funny as hell, you could pick us up on a burro and we’d still love you! Just make sure you make us feel sexy, pretty, special and definitely more important than your car. It doesn’t matter if you drive the hottest car in town, trust me – no woman is going to take a back seat to your ride for long. Got it? Now, go get her! Good luck, comrades!

5 Myths and the Truth about Male Sexuality BY DARLINE TURNER-LEE
“If you want my body and you think I’m sexy, come on honey tell me so. If you really need me, just reach out and touch me, come on sugar, let me know.” Rod Stewart’s 1978 hit “Do You Think I’m Sexy” asks the questions that many men struggle to answer. Are they attractive and sexy enough for women to want to sleep with them? These are honest questions. What man doesn’t want to be desired by women? At the very least, what man doesn’t want to be desired by his special woman?

S u m m e r 2 0 11
A large part of male sexuality is attractiveness to the opposite sex. Men want women to want them because men want women. Specifically, men want to have sex with women. This is not new news. However, male sexuality is not solely defined by physical attractiveness or physical activity. Just like female sexuality, male sexuality is multifactorial and has many layers. Sexuality in general is not easily defined. Dictionaries say, “The state or quality of being sexual” (Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary). Yeah, that’s really clear and easy to understand! Other definitions include, “Sexuality is the sum of the physical, functional and psychological attributes that are expressed by one’s gender identity (perception of being a man or a woman) and sexual behavior, whether or not relating to the sex organs or to procreation.”
-or
“Sexuality encompasses the psychological, social, emotional and spiritual makeup of an individual and the manner in which individuals express their own roles, relationships, values, customs, and gender”(Wikipedia). More simply put, your sexuality is how you express your individual essence, as a man or woman, to the world. Myths about sexuality abound. For example, “Women want love, men want sex.” What sweeping generalities! Many women have voracious sexual appetites and many men are concerned with the deeper meanings inherent in sexual expression. So what are the major truths and myths about sexuality, male sexuality in particular? Here are five myths:
All Men are Not Created Equal There are endless myths and jokes about the size of a man’s penis. Men of some races are reported to have larger penises than men of other races. Art often depicts the penis as smaller or larger depending on the culture from which the art comes and the prevailing ideal of what’s attractive. The truth is (based on controlled urological studies) that most men have a penis on the average range of approximately four inches when not erect and between five and six inches when erect. The average girth of the adult male penis when erect is threeand-a-half inches to four inches. Studies have shown no major difference in size between men of difference races or ethnicities. While some women may say that they prefer a man with a larger penis, most experts (and women) agree that size is not the determining factor when it comes to sexual prowess or sexual satisfaction. Women and men both say that overall interest in one another, sexual technique and compatibility are far more important indicators of healthy sexuality and sexual satisfaction than penis size.
Men Always Want To and Are Always Ready To Have Sex While men typically like to engage in sexual activity more frequently than women do, men too have their off times. If a man is worried, stressed or sick for
While men typically like to engage in sexual activity more frequently than women do, men too have their off times example, he may not feel like having sex. There is nothing wrong with him sexually and his dip in libido is appropriate to his life situation. Yet because of prevailing myths, he may worry that there is something wrong with him. Likewise, if there are problems within his relationship with his partner, he may be less inclined to have sex (at least with his partner). A man’s sexual appetite may also change if he is experiencing erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation or any other performance problems.
Men Just Want Sex “Men just want sex and men are always ready to have sex.” While this is true to a point, men are also interested in having loving, intimate relationships with their partners. Many men have multiple partners at one time or another, but it is not an absolute, across the board for all men. Many men enjoy (lots of) sex in the context of a loving, intimate, monogamous relationship.
Sex Is Purely Physical For Men The main reason that men are more interested in sex is because there is a primal instinct in men to copulate, to put their penises inside of women (yes, we are using the plural here) and deposit their sperm. It’s that simple. Men and women are designed to come together to reproduce and men have been programmed at the genetic level to get this done as often as they can and with as many women as they can to not only ensure that their genes live on, but also so that the species lives on. This primal urge is what
has kept the human species in existence for thousands of years. Now admittedly, this does not sound glamorous. But nature addresses the practical first and pretty later! The bottom line is that our collective survival has depended on this primal instinct for thousands of years and it has paid off. Male sexuality is complex and is even harder to understand because of all the myths and fables surrounding it. In upcoming issues, we’ll explore common myths about male sexuality and provide concrete facts men can use to enhance their sexuality and (hopefully) their intimate relationships.

BIKE Split Lunge Jumps

When performing split lunge jumps, start in a lunge position with separated legs at 90-degree angles. Make sure to keep your shoulders aligned over your hips and your knees directly over your ankles. From this position, jump in the air for height and switch feet into the opposite lunge position. When jumping, make sure you press through the front heel and bring the back knee straight down to two inches above the ground. This motion will simulate riding on your bike, gaining strength with every jump.
SWIM Zipper Pulls
Using a weight between 5 and 15lbs, depending on female or male, begin on your knees. From this position, bring your arms in an upward motion as if you are zipping up your jacket. Keeping your elbows high, straighten your arms above your head and reach out in an outward motion until you come back to the original position. This will simulate your swimming motion. To do a more advanced move, try it while balancing on a BOSU ball.
RUN Single Leg Burpees While standing on one leg, hop forward for a distance. Land softly and immediately jump back into a one legged push-up position. From there, use your abdominal muscles and arm strength to bring both of your feet back together in a standing position. Try this about 15 yards, 10 or so burpees, on the same leg. Then, repeat motion on opposite leg. To do a more advanced version, add a push up while in the push up position. This exercise will help increase your speed and balance.
By adding these exercises to your daily routine, you will swim stronger, peddle faster and run harder! Always remember hard work pays off!

Generations Generations of of Travel Travel A Dad
Navigates Inclusive Family Vacations
When sitting down to plan a vacation, all of the parties need to disclose their budget with specific dollar amounts, as awkward and painful as it may be. If anyone is hosting anything, whether it’s airfare or a group meal, that needs to be very specifically discussed. Stick to the plan. Although the sentiment, “If you get in a pinch, we can help out” is nice; it can really lead to misunderstandings. Disclosure may feel awkward, but it will minimize hurt feelings down the road, and might even serve to start a healthy conversation between generations about financial reality.

everal days of close confinement with the in-laws isn’t what most people call “fun.” It is, however, what an increasing number of families are calling “vacation.” Multigenerational travel has been on the rise in the last several years, and it’s not difficult to guess why. With fewer days off, we live farther apart and budgets are tighter than ever. Combining Spring Break and a trip to Grandma’s house into a single outing seems reasonable, if somewhat risky. Our family has taken several vacations of this kind, and they provided some of our happiest memories. There are, however, plenty of pitfalls for extended family travelers – in-laws, siblings and cousins traversing unfamiliar territory together can easily stumble upon simmering rivalries and long-dormant family issues. Three topics in particular can trip up multi-gen travelers, and all can be addressed long before you ever strap Grandma to the roof of the family truckster: Money, Logistics and Rules. In days of yore, generations of Austin fami-

Travel separately and plan all meals ahead of time. Airports make people crazy, families especially. Spare yourself your mother-in-law’s need to be at the airport four hours early. Spare her the sight of her grandchild throwing a kicking and screaming fit in 37C, D and parts of E. Time in transit is not of the “quality” sort. Start the clock on the family vacation when you arrive at your destination. Pre-planning every vacation meal may make you feel like a control freak or the kind of traveler that prefers fanny-packs, but remember that hungry kids are a nightmare. Adults are worse. Sure spontaneity takes a hit, but hissy fits are spontaneous, too.
Rules At some point, your kids’ behavior will embarrass you. They will suffer utter lapses of gratitude, they will whine, they will declare stone hatred for their favorite food. These episodes will pass. Overreacting will only lengthen the episode. In addition, your fellow traveling parents/relatives will inevitably have a precisely opposing philosophy on nutrition, sleep, discipline and everything else. Let your kids know ahead of time that things may be relaxed on the trip, but the rules are waiting patiently at a t x m a n . c o m 77 home for their return.

Achieve Your
Financial Goals When the market goes off the tracks, knowing why you originally made a specific investment can help you evaluate whether your reasons still hold, regardless of what the overall market is doing. Understanding how a specific holding fits in your portfolio also can help you consider whether a lower price might actually represent a buying opportunity. And if you don’t understand why a security is in your portfolio, find out. That knowledge can be particularly important when the market goes south, especially if you’re considering replacing your current holding with another investment.
Anyone can look good during bull markets; smart investors are produced by the inevitable rough patches.
If an earlier choice now seems rash, sometimes the best strategy is to take a tax loss, learn from the experience, and apply the lesson to future decisions. Expert help can prepare you and your portfolio to both weather and take advantage of the market’s ups and downs.

Consider Playing Defense.
During volatile periods in the stock market, many investors reexamine their allocation to such defensive sectors as consumer staples or utilities (though like all stocks, those sectors involve their own risks, and are not necessarily immune from overall market movements). Dividends also can help cushion the impact of price swings. According to Standard and Poor’s, dividend income has represented roughly one-third of the monthly total return on the S&P 500 since 1926, ranging from a high of 53% during the 1940’s to a low of 14% in the 1990’s, when investors focused on growth.
Even the best investors aren’t right all the time.

The Facts of Life
Why Every Man Needs a Legal Will BY John a. Hay III Guys, no one likes being pushed around or told what to do, especially in the world of finances. Why should it be any different after you are gone? While most men don’t like to think about what will happen when they are gone, and tend to procrastinate when it comes to drawing up a will, you need the facts if you want to be in control of your estate – a final say-so if you will, so listen up. Here are the facts you may not know.

Did you know that when you die without a properly drafted will (and when I say properly drafted I am not talking about a fill the blank, do-it-yourself form you find online) the courts and the Texas Probate Code decide what happens to your estate – your property, your investments and all those fancy, over-indulgent toys you have worked so hard to accumulate? Your wishes don’t count and neither do the wishes of your family or heirs.
Most importantly, a legal will with your directives clearly spelled out can save your family the thousands of dollars in dealing with your estate and the fight over who gets your BMW and Italian suits. It’s all about the law. Although the cost of having a will drawn up might seem unnecessary, by doing so you are saving your loved ones hundreds or even thousands of dollars in probate costs in the long run. Properly drafted, a legal will help you stay in control of what is going to happen to your estate after you are gone. A properly prepared will may also include all of the necessary medical related documents such as your directive to the physician spelling out your stated wishes to a hospital or physician in the case of incapacitation. Most importantly, a legal will with your directives clearly spelled out can save your family the thousands of dollars in dealing with your estate and the fight over who gets your BMW and Italian suits. This is a practical and necessary part of any man’s life and one that certainly bolsters credibility – after all, it is the responsible thing to do – part of taking care of your life and your family now so that when you are gone (no matter how far into the future that day may be) your legacy can be one of fond memories rather than hard feelings over a lengthy probate battle. Man up, make the appointment to draw up a will, then sit back and smile, knowing that you have written your final chapter.

Hug 2: Hug your faith – Hug your God. Hug 3: Hug your family – Yes, hug all of them and hug the pets, too.
Hug 4: Hug your friends – Hug your old ones, new ones and those who don’t even know you are friends.
