As I sit writing this, it’s a blustery “winter” day in Austin – I don’t know about you, but this string of gray, overcast days has really gotten to me. I feel a bit sluggish, my dark circles seem more pronounced, and getting out of bed in the morning is unusually difficult. Wow, are we spoiled! Austin, which boasts over 300 days of sunshine a year, has definitely altered my perspective of what a “winter” should be, considering my upbringing in the snowy, gray Midwest. The good news is all this hunkering down in the office has produced many exciting new ideas and events for aw. We are excited to announce our first annual Healthy Living event to be held April 1st at the Renaissance Austin Hotel. The day will be packed with dynamic speakers and exceptional vendors keeping you up-todate on all the latest in Healthy Living products and services, plus, a special “Meet the Doctor” area where medical professionals from a wide array of specialties will be available for you to meet and get to know in a relaxed atmosphere. We are so thrilled that three of Austin’s top medical facilities will be presenting this event along with us – Austin Regional Clinic, Seton Family of Hospitals and St. David’s HealthCare. You can find more details about the event and information on how to purchase tickets on page 94. As you read last month, we are expanding further into Williamson County and will be doing our WOW section each month featuring exceptional women in Wilco. See p. 65 for a wonderful profile of Wilco’s own Kris Whitfield. Ok…So now for the REALLY BIG news…In June 2011, we will be launching the first EVER publication for and about the great MEN in Austin—Austin Man Magazine. Over the years, not only have we had many supportive and loyal male readers of aw, but we have encountered so many more who deserve the kind of recognition and celebration that we have given to women in Austin for the past eight years. Stay tuned and watch as this great project unfolds! Thanks for reading aw and allowing us to celebrate the great women of Austin and Williamson County. We truly have the best job in town. And it’s about to get better! Stay warm … summer will be here before you know it! Warmly,

Birthplace of Complex Care for Central Texas
Nicole and Schoen
Nicole’s child was due to arrive August 29, but eight weeks before then she was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. To fight the disease aggressively and minimize her baby’s exposure to it, Nicole was scheduled to deliver through C-section — only 31 weeks into her pregnancy. Soon after delivery, Mom was transferred to our dedicated oncology floor to begin treatment, and her little boy, Schoen, was admitted to the NICU. Thanks to the highly skilled, award-winning maternity team at Seton Medical Center Austin, Nicole’s experience has a happy ending. Read her full story, or find an Ob/Gyn on our medical staff, at seton.net/austinbaby.
For more than a century, families in Central Texas have turned to Seton Medical Center Austin when experiencing the miracle of birth. Here, we strive to offer the highest-level and continuum of care for mom and baby, offering:
Michelle Gooch, MD, Ob/Gyn (Austin Regional Clinic)
• Recently expanded unit with new patient rooms and modern amenities for comfort and healing • Expert teams of Ob/Gyns and specialists on medical staff, and a nursing team recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for excellence in care • Nationally renowned transformational practices for safer labor and delivery Seton Austin’s Level III NICU, the highest level of neonatal intensive care available in the area, is also supported by access to world-renowned pediatric subspecialists at Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas, another member of the Seton Family of Hospitals.

Secrets of a Sexy Marriage Understand What Your Husband is Thinking BY S u s i e D av i s
D
id you know that February 15th is Do a Grouch a Favor Day? Kind of interesting that day follows Valentine’s Day … which makes me wonder: Why so many grouches? Hmmm. I can think of two reasons: A) Maybe the wives are grouchy because they got lingerie for Valentine’s Day when they really wanted a massage at Woodhouse Day Spa … alone. B) Or perhaps it’s the husbands that are grouchy because they got a Valentine’s dinner of pizza (with the family), followed by a lengthy round of grade school homework and a tired, little wifey that fell fast asleep in her flannel pajamas? In my very unscientific study, I vote ‘B’ – for the husbands. Why? Because I’ve written a book called Uncovered and in writing it, I discovered a lot about men. I’ve been married over 25 years and we talk, so I thought I knew it all. That is, until I looked at research about the way men think. Stunning. And then to top it off, I interviewed a dozen married men and asked them detailed questions about love, life, marriage and sex. I’ve included an excerpt: For lunch, would you prefer a really good cheeseburger or a rendezvous
18 austinwoman f e b r u a r y 2 0 1 1
in bed with your wife? John: You’re joking, right? Jack: I am surprised you thought a silly cheeseburger might stand up to a nooner. Not even in the same universe. Carson: A cheeseburger, served in bed, with my wife is optimal. Okay . . . silly answer to a silly question. If my wife offered me a rendezvous where I didn’t have to play games with wondering whether she was going to be open to the idea or not, I’d take that in a minute. If it is the burger versus the having to play the right part, walking on eggshells, wondering if she has changed the mating ritual this week and whether I will have the right ritual to impress the female, I’d rather have the burger. At least then I know where I stand. How much time elapses, during a typical day, between your thoughts about sex? Chad: If I said “once a day,” then I would be lying. So let’s just agree – guys are wired differently, and any number of things can trigger a thought about sex during the day. I haven’t tried counting and figure that would just be depressing. So I will hedge and say three – morning and night when I am in bed with my wife and when she gets out of the bath (I
figure we are pretty close to naked at that point anyway). Jack: Have you ever tried to study with the radio on? Thinking about sex is kind of like good music continuously playing in the background . . . it’s always on, so you just learn to work around it. Interesting, huh? As wives, it’s our job to try and understand how our husbands think. Because it’s in understanding how they think – and taking some creative action – that’s bound to keep us from having a grouchy husband in the house.

Valentine Nothing fires up the romantic flames like a little hair tousle, a wink-wink and a nudge-nudge and perhaps a little nudge from the beauty department. Whether for yourself, him or her, get a little glam before you step out … or even if the plan is to stay in. Valentine’s Day comes way too soon post-holidays and I am all about the smoke and mirrors; why not in the form of mascara, a smoky eye and some gloss? Here are some tips to get you from A-to-V [Day].

Who says Valentine’s Day is just for celebrating with your significant other? Celebrate your love for your children too by hosting a “Bee My Valentine” party for your children and their special friends. Here’s a step-by-step guide to throwing the perfect bee-bash that will have your little guests buzzing with excitement. Step 1: Create a buzz with your invitations. These adorable invitations and all of the other party printables featured here were custom-designed by Bird from Bird’s Party for this party and in support of Operation Shower – a nonprofit organization that honors the sacrifices of our military families by coordinating unit-wide baby showers and “showers in a box” for pregnant military personnel in a deployment or high-stress situation. For more information on Operation Shower, visit operationshower.org. For a limited time, these party printables are available to you at a reduced price, in support of this great cause. So buzz over to birdsparty.com and download the entire collection. Then simply print on cardstock, cut and use to embellish your party.

Step 2: Decorate your beehive. Set the scene with pink-and-black party decorations – of course, you’ll be off to a flying start if you use the party-printable collection featured here. In addition, transform some pink helium-filled balloons into buzzing bees by using a black marker to add stripes and a cute smile. Alternatively, you could hang pink-and-black paper pompoms around the party venue, or, as featured here, some darling, wooly bumblebees hung with fishing wire (see sidebar, “Fuzzy Buzzy Bees” for tutorial). The beehive centerpiece featured on p. 26 is made from pink “honeycomb” scrapbook paper and black cardstock, cut into a beehive shape and mounted on Styrofoam blocks. We used floral wire, curled to resemble antennae, to attach the bumblebees to the beehive. Step 3: Serve up some bee-dazzling treats. Use pink-and-black stripes as the inspiration for the food you serve at the party. The pinkand-black parfaits featured here are so simple to make and taste great – just layer strawberry yogurt and crushed Oreos in a parfait glass, top with whipped cream and serve. Make bee cupcakes by topping your cupcakes with strawberry frosting, then layer crushed Oreo crumbs in horizontal stripes across the top of the cupcake. Pipe some chocolate wings and antennae onto parchment paper and use them to embellish the cupcakes, along with candies or chocolate chips for the eyes and nose. Make bee marshmallow pops by dipping both ends of some strawberry marshmallows in melted chocolate and chocolate sprinkles and, again, add chocolate wings. Serve up more Oreos and pink marshmallows, à la carte. Pink lemonade goes great with these treats! Step 4: Entertain with some bee-guiling games. Honey-coat some classic party games and keep your little guests entertained. Pin the Stinger on the Bee: Draw a large pink and black bumblebee on poster board. Cut stingers out of black construction paper and put double-sided tape on the back of each stinger. At the party, blindfold the children, in turn, and get them to stick their stinger on the bee. The closest to the correct location, wins. “Bee” Bag Toss: Purchase inexpensive beanbags, or fill pink socks with rice and beans, and decorate them with black felt strips and pipe cleaner antennae so that they resemble bees. Create a large “honey pot” with a bucket or plant pot and have the children take turns to toss their bees into the honey pot. Bug, Bug, Bumblebee: Play a bee-themed version of “Duck, Duck, Goose” by using the words “Bug, Bug, Bumblebee” instead. Step 5: More honey to-go. At the party, have the children make bee antennae to wear at the party (instead of party hats), using black headbands, pink pipe cleaners and black wooly pompoms from your local craft store. The bee antennae also make great party favors for the children to take home. You could also offer up some “honey jars” filled with pink hard candy, as shown here. Fuzzy Buzzy Bees:
Formerly Known as Vanity Rocks
To make one Fuzzy Buzzy Bee, make three pink pompoms and two black pompoms, using the following method: (1) wrap the yarn around the palm of your hand numerous times; (2) remove the yarn from your hand and tie the bundle of yarn around the middle using more yarn; (3) cut the loops on each end of the bundle with scissors, then fluff. Thread the center of the pink-and-black pompoms, using needle and thread, in alternating colors, to create the body of the bumblebee. Attach googly eyes (from your local craft store) and wings cut from cardstock, using hot glue. Use the bees to decorate your dessert table or hang them around the party venue using fishing wire. Relational Etiquette Top Five Rules to b y Relational Success
I
J a n G o s s
t’s February. Chocolate sales soar, Cupid shoots his arrows and heart-shaped valentines are passed to giggling young girls. You may find yourself reminiscing of simple days when
love seemed less demanding and trouble-free. Relationships can be … well, shall we just say ... complicated. They can be complex for a variety of reasons, but nothing complicates our relationships more than the ambiguity of personal rules and boundaries. Clarity brings prosperity in every arena, including relationships. Have you ever thought about what unspoken rules you live by – and require of others – both in personal and professional relationships? We all have them. We all need them. Healthy relationships require rules and boundaries that are understood and agreed upon by both parties. Could you imagine driving on a street where everyone drives by his or her own set of rules? Our relational streets need rules and boundaries as well, or people and relationships crash. Rules give us clarity. Boundaries keep us on track. We penalize ourselves, and sometimes the whole “team,” when we don’t follow the guidelines. Just ask the NFL. Fortunately, there are rules of etiquette that can help us play the relational game without getting benched or kicked off the field! The good news is that experts agree on the basic rules for civility in relationships. Here are the top five relational etiquette guidelines to ensure that you win in your relationships:

hearts hanging: By using the elegance of nature you can have a happy heart tree by gathering a couple of twigs from your yard and hanging heart ornaments or even cut out hearts from the branches or leaves. You can use this for a unique centerpiece.
saying i love you: Create a banner for your wall or window that says “I love you” written out on different pages. Pick up letter stamps from a craft store to spell it out and you will have a sweet message greeting you in your home.
sugar sugar: I love making people cookies and they are also a way to add a touch of color to your kitchen. Sugar cookies with pink or white icing add that extra something and keep people’s tummies happy.
jars and jars: In tune with the sweetness of cookies there is something special about displaying your baking ingredients. What about a line of jars filled with sprinkles or candy hearts?
40 austinwoman f e b r u a r y 2 0 1 1
These sweetly simple ideas will bring valentine’s day to your home in a tasteful and elegant fashion. wrapped in ribbon: A clever way to transform your bookshelf is to take a few old books and wrap them up with ribbon. Displaying what you already have with a seasonal twist has a timeless effect and is easy to clean-up after the holiday is over.
vintage collage: Finding old pictures and letters from family members is such a special way to celebrate Valentine’s. Arrange old photos or love letters on your coffee table or put them on your fridge to remind you of the different love stories in your family.
all dressed up: There is something elegant about the perfect pair of heels sitting on the chair in your bedroom waiting to be worn. Why not set them on a pretty brown box on your dresser or in a chair by the door? This can also add elegance to any nook.
mirror love notes: A lipstick love note on a small mirror can add a whimsical air of romance to a small entryway or side table – an inexpensive décor piece that can be easily cleaned up after the holiday as well. XOXO!

In 2009, the luxury brand sold a scarf every 20 seconds. Madonna, Jennifer Lopez and the Kardashians flaunt Hermès’ famous Birkin bag. There is a six-year wait for a mortal to snag a Birkin. The company recently reported a 55% first-half net profit with sales soaring 45% in Asia and 26% in the United States. Yet, Hermès Spring Paris Fashion Show honored its humble beginnings as a saddlemaker. The first clue was the wood chip mulch. Who knew that the French put mulch on the floor for their fashion shows? Male fashionistas patiently raked the runway. An hour passed. Still no fashion show; still no models. Perfectly-groomed waiters distributed champagne from silver trays, which only fueled the impatient crowd. The rowdy French paparazzi whistled and hooted for the show to begin, like rednecks if the bullriding starts an hour late. But when the curtain finally opened, everyone from Janet Jackson to Matisse’s granddaughter gasped, leapt to their feet and applauded. Eight riders cantered their Arabian horses around a white ring under crystal chandeliers at the end of the runway. The horses bowed to the crowd.
jean paul gaultier hams it up with one of the Hermès models.

The long-legged models strode down the mulch like lightning in gorgeous equestrian wear. Each one looked as if she had just hopped off a horse. Many carried riding crops. All had flat-topped riding hats like those worn by Stevie Ray Vaughan or Argentinian cowboys. There were jodhpurs, riding boots, short bolero jackets, waistcoats and long dusters. Unlike much of current fashion, all of these clothes were wearable rather than a crazy designer’s impractical fantasy. Every model sported Hermès’ specialty: rich supple leather as pants, vest, jacket or belt tied around a model’s neck and crisscrossing her body. The tones were black, mahogany, rust and tan, with a random shot of green, red or Hermès trademark orange. All the while, the beautiful dressage horses pranced and bowed a synchronized dance in the ring at the end of the runway. The fashion critics loved the show and the clothes. The day was, however, bittersweet. It was the last Hermès show for Jean Paul Gaultier, who had served as Hermès’ designer for seven years. Gaultier burst on the international fashion scene in the early 1990s as the French fashion bad boy. He designed Madonna’s pointy bra for her 1990 Blonde Ambition world tour and
dared to design kilts for men. Gaultier became Hermès’ designer in 2004 and brought an edge to the traditional design house while respecting its history, a formula that spelled success. He ended his reign at Hermès the way he had begun it seven years before in his first fashion show. Gaultier shone the spotlight on Hermès’ heritage as a saddlemaker. There was no drama to Gaultier’s departure. Designers in fashion houses come and go. He left while on top with a spectacular finish. Gallantly, Gaultier described his time with Hermès as a love story, but, “like all love stories,” he said, “it has an end.” MORE INFO hermès.com

LOVE
Ask LOIS Online Dating Dos and Don’ts Editor’s Note: This month, we are pleased to welcome “Austin’s relationship guru” Lois Goodman and her “Ask Lois” column to AW. We believe her practical, no-holds-barred approach to love and relationships will be as valuable to our readers as it has been to so many of her clients. A little background: Lois is an intuitive consultant and teacher who began her work in 1990, practicing on everyone and anyone she could find. When a complete stranger offered her money for her services in 1994 (word was out!), she began her professional career. In 1995, she started teaching intuition and relationship classes. Although Lois provides often painfully truthful insights, she generally delivers the information with love, compassion and deep understanding. Her educational background is in business, so she is known for her ability to get to the heart of the matter and focus on details where necessary. She is exceptionally skilled in relationship matters as she has had many different kinds of relationships for many years before finally meeting the love of her life in 2002. Although not a licensed therapist, we believe Lois brings a lighthearted and practical approach to the perils, pitfalls and excitement of love.

Do it at home!
My husband is neither rich, nor the romantic type, nor a very skilled cook, so what’s a girl to do, right? Well, we have come up with a really fun way to cook nice dinners together, which is something romantic you can do any night of the week, on a shoestring budget. Here are some of my tips to make this evening something you and your sweetie will certainly enjoy: Plan a menu. If he is into helping with input, plan it together! Otherwise, secretly plot to make some of his – or your – favorite dishes. Make a list and shop carefully for all your ingredients to avoid the last minute “oh no, I forgot the carrots!” That’s a big buzz-killer. Go to your favorite wine retailer and ask for help picking wines to pair with your dinner (see Uncorked for more info). A good bit of advice from one of our experts: “If you’re one of those folks that’s been saving that special bottle for that special night, well … break it open!”
52 austinwoman f e b r u a r y 2 0 1 1
If it’s a vintage red, decant it ahead of time, at least an hour or so. That way it will have aired and opened-up, and will be ready to drink. If he’s not really into cooking, put him to work anyway. My husband’s jobs include assistant, dishwasher, bartender and DJ. He plays music we like and keeps our glasses full while I do the chopping and cooking. He is also in charge of the appetizers: I buy ready-made things like cheese and crackers, dips, olives and such, and he serves them on the kitchen island for us to nibble on while we work. Enjoy a glass of bubbly together while you prep. Advice from the experts: “Good Champagne is often wasted on large groups, but when you are just a twosome, you can pour it as an elixir. There are many delicious Champagnes all around town, at all price points.” If your sweetie is of the barman persuasion, maybe he can make you guys a special cocktail!
Set a pretty table. Get the fancy dinnerware out, that’s what it’s for anyway! Use the good wine glasses, for sure and cloth napkins. Add candles and fresh flowers or a nice centerpiece. Have fun cooking. Even if you are not a professional, doing it with love will make all the difference. Savor your dinner. Whether you go all out or keep it really simple, sharing a meal is a bonding, sensual experience. Have a good conversation and laugh a lot. My husband always earns extra points for making me laugh. Laughing wakes up the endorphins, you know? Have a light dessert, like chocolates and fresh fruit. So you don’t go into a food coma with something too heavy and rich. Or, as our expert suggests: “Have a dessert wine, like the Chambers or Campbell’s from Rutherglen, Australia, to get those lips pucker-prepared.” Grrrrr!

Oh, and she even found time to open a (since-closed) fashion boutique – Enjoi – as a sideline. Crazy? Maybe. Firing on all cylinders? Always. “I’m a serial entrepreneur,” she says, her signature laugh ringing out as she shrugs and rolls her eyes. In 1984, Bruce Colegrove was a proud delegate for Ronald Reagan at the Republican Convention in Dallas. He took his eldest daughter along, giving her a taste for politics, which stayed with the 18-year-old for years. “I’m a patriot, and love my community, and I really thought I would have a career in politics,” says Copeland. Over the years, she poured her energies into helping candidates such as then Governor George W. Bush and Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison. (She was Hutchison’s point person in Williamson County during the Senator’s run for Texas Governor.) And yet, despite her passion for politics, Copeland’s dream of running for office faded and died.
Crazy? Maybe. Firing on all cylinders? Always. “I’m a serial entrepreneur,”
Maybe it was having a front row seat that was just a tad too revealing. Or maybe being jaded with the political machine. Either way, Copeland resolved that her energies were better spent on increasing the voice afforded to women, and providing economic opportunities for women and young people to rise in the industry she loves. With her focus on women and youth, she joined forces with Robin Ford in founding Project 19, a nonpartisan, issue-neutral organization dedicated to advancing women into leadership roles throughout the public, private and nonprofit sectors.

lisa On Fashion You’re either ahead or you’re behind. But if you’re like me, and don’t ever give anything away, you’ll always have something to wear … I designed my house around my closet. I have a checkout system for loaners to friends. (I’m not joking!) I have a passion for clothes. I love outrageous, I love big jewelry, and I love bling. I liked bling when bling wasn’t cool. And I’m a shoe fanatic, with over 300 pairs. Look for a sale. And then look for a sale. Bottom line: you’ve got to be authentic to who you are. There’s a lot of style at FIAT. I saw the president of FIAT North America, Laura Soave, making a press announcement wearing a great leather dress.

The Rear-View Mirror Reflections on Life by Lisa Copeland Give back. Find something that the entire family can get behind. Our family has been involved with Special Olympics in Round Rock for years, which gave my daughter her heart for special needs kids … I am so proud of everything my kids do; they don’t care about money or prestige. Copeland’s own community service includes: Metro board, YMCA of Greater Williamson County (2005-2010); Round Rock Serving Center board (2004-2006); Round Rock Chamber of Commerce (2006-2007); Cheer coach, Round Rock Christian Academy (2001-2002). A great leader stands by her word, but also admits if she makes a mistake, and has the flexibility to change course. I look up first. When my Dad died three years ago, the person that picked me up most was God. I have a God that did not let me down. My number one driver in business is God, and I feel a lot of responsibility to take the talents and treasures God has given me and help other people. In politics, you have to learn how to come together and talk things through. Because there is no right answer, and there is no wrong answer. Robin Ford (co-founder of Project 19) and I were on different [sides of the aisle] on several things, but with Project 19, we wanted to show people how to open the conversation. We also want to empower women to have a voice, to lead and to want to help other women.
Give people a second chance. If people had thrown me out every time I made a mistake, I don’t know where I would be today. I think if somebody whom I hired and trained fails, it is my fault. It’s a training issue. Loyalty is important. It’s the way I was raised. I believe you stand by your word. I need my stuff. I can’t travel with less than two large suitcases. Robin tried to change me by making me carry them through Grand Central Station – in high heels. But I’ve still not learned to pack light. Do the right thing in business, even when it hurts. Nyle Maxwell taught me that. I’m proud of being able to work and stay in a community, and hold my head up, because I’ve always tried to do right by people. The number one thing that women bring into any business environment is transparency. I’ve been in meetings with my employees where I’ve cried for them and with them. I see that as a strength, not a weakness. Be authentic – in life, in fashion, in sales. If you’re real, and people like you, sales is not a hard job.

Tooting Her Horn: Lisa is… “Loyal, vibrant, energized and intelligent, straightforward and professional. Fun, fun, fun! And hilarious without trying … I have never seen anyone who runs a-million-miles-an-hour like her, connects people the way she connects and is able to raise stellar children and love her friends … While I was paralyzed, Lisa loaded me up – wheelchair and all – to go buy an Easter dress for my daughter. We came home with a house full of furniture for me, samples from every cosmetic counter in Macy’s and no Easter dress!” - Amy Dillon, founder, Souled Out Ministries “A very rare find. She’s a smart businesswoman – she has her SEC, insurance and mortgage licenses; beautiful and vivacious. She celebrates your successes as much as she does her own. She expects the very best of those around her because that is what she gives. She doesn’t require that your 100% match hers (no way it could) but she has no room in her life for mediocrity.” - Robin Ford, co-founder of Project 19 Foundation
“The big sister I never had … Lisa has achieved anything she’s gone after. From owning her own clothing boutique to running a traditionally male-dominated organization, she has let nothing stand in her way.” - Stephanie Lendecky, longtime friend “One of those rare individuals with an overabundance of energy and passion for the job that she’s tasked to do ... Her passion for engaging people; her enthusiasm for whatever she is representing and her tenacity make her a great salesperson.” - Nyle Maxwell, former Round Rock mayor and owner of the Nyle Maxwell Family of Dealerships “Always looking for ways to support women … She gives unselfishly of herself and her time. That’s just who she is.” - LisaBeth “LB” Thomas, President, Texas Women in Business
Buckle Up: 0-to-60 with Lisa Copeland First car? A 1982 Cutlass Supreme, brome green, with a green landau roof … I’m like my Dad – I really like cars.
Next car? A pink FIAT, with shag carpet and Swarovski crystals.
Football fan?
Growing up you wanted to be? Queen, and walk around wearing a crown!
Date night? Our favorite time is on Sundays, when we go ride our horses. I can just do ponytail, hat and go run. Horses make me happy.
Best girls’ night out?
Yes! The Aggies – because of my kids – and the Dallas Cowboys. I love football. I like the competition and the team camaraderie.
Wine and shopping at The Domain – I love it there. Something good always happens at The Domain.
Obsession?
Worst habit?
Princess Diana. I got up at 4:00 a.m. to watch her wedding, and when she died, I stayed in bed for three days. I’ve probably got 20 Princess Di dolls, with different outfits. I loved her resiliency. I love everything about the British monarchy – I think the Queen is the classiest world leader.
Shopping. I shop when I’m happy; I shop when I’m sad.
What makes you cry? Sad movies. Injustice in the world. Anything bad that happens to kids.
What makes you laugh? I laugh a lot. When I like people, I laugh.

AW chats with Round Rock City Council member and volunteer extraordinaire Kris Whitfield.
T
here are only 24 hours in a day, but don’t tell that to Kris Whitfield. Not only is Whitfield the president and co-owner of CheckSmart Recovery, a
check collection agency, but she also serves on the Round Rock City Council, the Round Rock Chamber, the Chamber Board of Directors and volunteers with almost 20 other organizations. She does all this while being a wife, mother and grandmother. The Round Rock Chamber of Commerce named CheckSmart Recovery “Small Business of the Year.” She and her business partner, Scott Swindell, have run the company for 12 years. They run a check collection agency with heart. “When people think of collection agencies, that does not always conjure up the most pleasant thoughts,” Whitfield said. “Our company philosophy is that we not only are helping our clients recover their money, but we are also helping the folks who wrote the bad checks solve a problem.” Whitfield’s commitment to Round Rock hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 1997, the Texas Senate recognized her commitment to community service, naming her an "Honorary Governor of Texas.” Whitfield has lived in Round Rock since she moved from Abilene in 1992. She and her husband Eric will be married 18 years on July 4th. Her husband currently attends the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin and hopes to become an Episcopal Priest. Their daughter Britta is 38. Britta and her husband Jeff (both are Round Rock High grads) have two children, Liz and Tip, and live

in Glen Allen, VA. Another son, Eric, 32, is working on his Bachelor’s in business.
austinwoman: What do you like about living in Round Rock? Kris Whitfield: Round Rock has such a smalltown community spirit, even though we have rocketed to a population of over 100,000 and are still growing. We have tried very hard to keep that small-town feel in our community. Events like Christmas Family Night where we close down the streets in our small downtown area and thousands show up to see Santa Claus is one of my favorite examples. I love all of the familyfriendly events.
AW: What do you like best about serving on the Round Rock City Council? KW: I am humbled and consider it a great honor to be elected to represent the community. We do not have single member districts, so we are able to represent everyone. I enjoy talking to community members about their ideas; what makes Round Rock a great place to live, work and play and to help figure out how
Kris’s Love life In honor of Valentine’s Day, AW wanted to know our WOW woman’s secrets of love. What makes their marriage work: “We communicate a lot and we have fun,” Kris said. “We support each other in everything we do. I like to do things that make him proud.” What Kris says about Eric: “He is my encouragement for many of the things I get involved in. He understands the importance of volunteering and giving back to your community as much as I do – he was on the Round Rock school board in the ‘90s and has been a community volunteer through many organizations over the years.” What Eric says about her: “What everyone sees first in Kris is her easy smile and instant charm. She has no pretension. She is a country girl at heart, who is also a smart businesswoman and a compassionate leader.” What they do for date night: “We cuddle up and watch a movie,” Kris said. “No kids, just us and the cats.”
to continue to make that happen.
AW: How do you balance your job, all your commitments and your family? KW: It is a scale that sometimes tips both ways. I am involved in a lot of activities. Everyone in my family is also involved in things that make them happy and help them feel as though they are giving back to our community and to God.
AW: What do you struggle with? KW: I have so many passions and I can’t do them all. My interests are so scattered. I am horrible at saying “no.”
AW: how do you decompress? KW: I do not give myself much downtime, but when I do, I usually have a glass of wine and snuggle with one of my kittens.
AW: Do you have any guilty pleasures? KW: I love hiding out at our cabin in the Rockies in Wyoming. I love to fly fish and hike and do not make
three things you should know about Kris: She was raised by her sister. “My mother passed away from breast cancer when I was 12 years old, and my sister, who was 21 years older than I, raised me like one of her own daughters,” Whitfield said. “There were three of us girls that grew up in Abilene as sisters. We call ourselves ‘sisters’ now and I call my real sister and her husband ‘Mom and Dad.’” She loves with open arms. “When I married my husband, Eric, I had no children and his family instantly became mine,” she said. “I now have several children that I call my own. We also have sort of adopted other kids along the way that did not have attentive parents. God has blessed me with a constantly growing family. I also love mentoring people that want to find their passions in life.” She is passionate about Round Rock (in case you couldn’t tell). “I call Abilene and West Texas ‘where I am from,’ and Round Rock my ‘home.’ I love to drive through Old Settler’s Park and see the many families enjoying it. I love driving through downtown and being able to hear live music. I love that we have a professional symphony (Round Rock Symphony) and we have a professional theatre (Penfold). There really is no reason to leave Round Rock for entertainment anymore.”
much time for that here.

Divorce Divorce is often a catalyst for reflection and reinvention. For Lori, the end of her marriage meant the opportunity to explore her sexuality. “I needed to figure out what’s important to me, what works and what doesn’t, so I can communicate this to a future partner.” Lori is ready to take intimacy to a deeper level. “To me, sexual intimacy extends well beyond the physical. atalie Perry, 43, and her daughter, Chelsea, 21, each boast a large cross tattoo on the upper right side of their backs. The two women, who could pass for sisters, are among hundreds of women who sport body art to remember their loved ones. Chelsea’s older brother Blake died in a freak ATV accident on February 24th, 2008, just eight days after returning home from the Persian Gulf and weeks away from his 21st birthday.

“I got my tattoo in the exact same spot as my brother had his,” shared Chelsea. “I honestly never wanted one, but it was a way to keep his memory alive.” After their loss, the Perry family turned to the grief support organization, which has saved lives, jobs and marriages for tens of thousands of individuals. Susan and Don Cox founded For the Love of Christi in 1987 after they lost their daughter, Christi Lanahan, to a drunk driver (see AW’s profile in November 2007, also by this writer.) With

Natalie said Blake would appreciate the irony of her cross tattoo, which also contains his dog tag insignia. “I found out about his first tattoo when I saw this atomic sticker on his truck. I asked him when he got the tattoo and Blake was amazed that I knew!” she recalled with a smile. “I told him he couldn’t hide anything from his mother!”

Billie Fullingim, 69, is a long-time Christi Center volunteer. She admitted she was quite a rebel growing up in a small town. Her peacock tattoo, gracefully adorning her ankle, is not only a tribute to her late husband Sam who died from pneumonia in July 2005, but the fulfillment of a childhood wish. “I always wanted one – I would draw tattoos when I was a kid and my middle-aged parents were bewildered by this,” said Fullingim. “The peacock symbolizes the birds that would come up to our Georgetown house. Sam would make arrangements with their feathers and always had one in his hat.” Nathan Glenn Leggett, who died from drowning in November 2001, was his mother’s dove, a “gift from God.” “I was told early on I would never have a child because of the internal injuries I suffered when I was young,” recalled Trudy Leggett, 44. “But, then I was blessed with Nathan who grew up to be such a giving young man.” Nathan worked with the homeless, donated a portion of his HEB check to the Red Cross, and then, died at 17 years old, while helping another during an Austin flood. cuddles the left side of her neck. Cathy Collins, 55, could easily pass for a “biker chick” with her long blonde hair and hip clothes. Her ankle tattoo is made up of different flowers, representing her four sons and her brother, Stephen Taylor Barbour, who was murdered January 3, 1990. “The flowers are intertwined, which keeps me understanding that my brother’s soul still lives with me and his nephews,” said Collins. She is an intake specialist at For the Love of Christi, helping other family members who have lost loved ones to murder, suicide and other circumstances. Kate von Alt, 50, showcases a large “G” surrounded by a Gaelic poem on her right arm to honor her twin son Garrett who died when he was 15 years old. “When you lose a child, nothing about you remains the same. The tattoo is an expression to let the world know how different you are,” said von Alt. For the Love of Christi

e left Oceanside, CA two days ago in a rented van and had been chasing cyclists across three states and two Indian reservations. It was midnight and we were somewhere near the Arizona-Utah border. “Pull over here and let’s get some sleep”, said Ryan. “But we are in the middle of nowhere!” I exclaimed. “No we aren’t. We’re in Monument Valley.” I looked out the window into darkness. Rafael slowed the van and carefully drove off the side of the road into a field of loose red gravel. As we pulled the back seats out of the van to make room for another night of van-camping we heard the “whirr, whirr, whirr” of a lone cyclist pedaling past us with their support car following closely behind, lighting the way and playing Brazilian music from a loudspeaker. Not to worry. We would catch them in the morning when we started another day of interviews, photos and video. We were Media Crew Number Three for the 2010 Race Across America. And as I slowly fell asleep next to Rafael, a complete stranger as of two days ago, I couldn’t help but think that by this time next year, I would be the one on the bike as part of Team Ride Red.

Race Across America Facts raceacrossamerica.org The race covers 3,000 miles, starting in Oceanside, CA and crosses 14 states through the center of the country to finish in Annapolis, MD. $35,000 is the average race budget to support a team of 4 racers and 13 crew members, including a race entry fee of $8,295. $2 million dollars was raised in 2010 alone by racers for charities and nonprofit organizations. Teams are not required to fundraise. Solo riders have up to 12 days to finish (average is 10 days at 12 mph) and teams have up to nine days to finish (average is seven days at 16 mph). Over 450 racers represent more than 25 countries. Competitors and crew race nonstop in sleepdeprived states (as little as one hour-per-day) resting wherever they can (RVs, hotels, or WalMart parking lots).

Hi-tecH dentistry in a Home-like setting. Race Across America (RAAM) is a 3,000-mile, nonstop bike race across the United States. The idea of RAAM generally elicits one of two reactions from people: “That’s so cool!” or “Why the hell would anyone want to do that?” The route has varied in its 30-year history, but in 2011, over 450 racers comprised of soloists and teams of two, four and eight people from 25 different countries will start in Oceanside, CA and cross through 14 states and 55 time stations to finish six to 12 days later in Annapolis, MD. Team Ride Red will be there. George Thomas, race director for Race Across America, said, “We are very excited to have Team Ride Red racing in 2011.They are strong women and what better way to promote health and fitness, than having these women race 3,000 miles.” While female racers only make up a small percentage of the RAAM race field (19 female riders out of 302 in 2010), our numbers are slowly growing. Based out of Austin, TX, Team Ride Red is comprised of four women over the age of 40: Susan Farago (myself), Carol Pope, Vicki Ford and Sue Schrader. Our mission? To represent the American Heart Association Go Red for Women of Central Texas at the 2011 Race Across America event and help bring a voice to and take action against the number one killer of women – heart disease. “Even though we have made great strides, heart disease remains the number-one killer of women and too many women still die because they are unaware of how they can reduce their risk,” said Erika Holland, executive director of the American Heart Association Capital Area Division. “We are pleased that the four athletic women who comprise Team Ride Red are willing to go to

February is Heart Health Month Take Action Now and Don’t Become a Statistic Later*. Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women, claiming approximately 430,000 women each year, about one every minute. While one-in-30 American women die of breast cancer, about one-in-three die from cardiovascular disease. More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next five causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. 90% of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. Heart disease is largely preventable. In fact, 80% of cardiac events in women may be prevented if women make the right choices for their hearts involving diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking. *Data provided by the American Heart Association, GoRed for Women 2010/2011 FACT Sheet.

such extraordinary lengths to help raise funds and spread awareness to fight this largely preventable disease.” Team Ride Red has received overwhelming support from the Austin community. “It is so energizing to share our team’s mission with everyone and with the support of our sponsors, we can’t wait to get to the start line in Oceanside!” said Ford. The Heart Hospital of Austin, one of the team’s primary sponsors, recognizes RAAM as an opportunity to promote women’s heart health locally AND nationally. “We are happy to support Team Ride Red in their endeavor to raise awareness of heart disease in our community and across America,” said David Laird, CEO of Heart Hospital of Austin. “We have a common goal to educate women about the signs of a heart attack and we applaud the team for their efforts”. The team is looking forward to solidifying race details over the next few months such as: finalizing the 13-15 crew members to support the racers, determining food requirements for a caravan of almost 20 people for up to 10 days, making reservations for RVs and plane tickets, and partnering with sponsors like Hoo-Ha Ride Glide by Reflect Sports (anti-chafing chamois cream to help those female parts prone to sensitivity after 3,000 miles in the saddle). We will put everything to the test at the Hill Country 600K bike race in March which starts just outside of San Antonio. RAAM will be a life altering event for Team Ride Red. And just like women facing heart disease, it is a journey of mental and physical demands that go beyond any imaginable experience. Heart disease isn’t someone else’s problem – as women, it is our problem and fortunately we are also the solution. Tradition Comes Alive b y J es s i c a B i l l e a u d
Austin Dance India Takes Center Stage
W
hile Austin Dance India celebrates its 20th anniversary, its upcoming February performance is steeped in tradition a thousand years beyond its Austin beginnings. Celebrating its first performance on The Long Center stage, and the first time the venue has hosted any Indian-costumed dance event, Austin Dance India invites you to witness its rich cultural history February 4th through 6th. Titled Parampara Part II, the performance follows last year’s sold out show and features the company’s founder Anuradha Naimpally, as well as renowned dancer Gina Lilla – the two bringing years of combined experience and profoundly deep appreciations of this unique art form to the performances. Austin Dance India’s 20th anniversary coincides with the 1000th anniversary of the Brihadeshwara Temple, where this style of classical Indian dance originated. Naimpally brings the tradition from South India to Austin in a vivid show, featuring colorful saris and the fluid, yet angular movements of the Bharata Natyam style of Indian dance. The tone of the performance is a joyful one, said the director, employing creative and innovative techniques to best showcase the dance style, which originated in Hindu temples as a mode of worship. “There was a whole class of people who dedicated their lives to dancing,” said Naimpally, adding that in 1947 the venues were changed from temples to theatres. “When I was five, I saw a dancer who taught me. It drew me in and I knew I had to do that. It’s not a conscious choice. You have to have the passion,” said Naimpally, a native of Canada who has danced internationally for over 30 years. She was named Best Dancer by the Austin Area Critics’ Circle in 2001 and was nominated again in 2008. Her contributions to the community include teaching sessions and talks in

area schools, festivals and libraries. “It is an extremely difficult art. Not only does it require the stamina but also the technical skill and the artistic expression. You have to be possessed by it.” Naimpally hopes audiences will also be possessed by the drama of the February performance. While Parampara Part II fuses tradition with contemporary twists, the dances tell age-old stories. “You will hear a lot about the gods. There is a lot of human drama amongst the gods,” said the director, who will take the stage with senior students – among them is her 16-year-old daughter – in a series of solos and duets. Naimpally will perform the 26-minute-long Varnam, which is the “crowning jewel” of the suite. Set to the traditional Indian music of strings, percussion and flutes, guest artist Gina Lilla will also take the stage. Having danced most of her life, Lilla was inducted into the Austin Arts Hall of Fame in 2003 for her contributions to theatre and dance. “The dance has a profound effect on the audience. It is meant to be beautiful, ornate and full of subtle emotions. It is such a state of higher consciousness,” said Lilla, who is also an astrologer and teaches meditation classes. “I saw a dancer in New York City and decided that is what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. That was 50 years ago.” As with many art forms, the artists hope to transcend the medium so that audiences will connect on a deeper level. “It expresses something more universal that everyone can connect to,” said Naimpally. “It is a treat for the eyes and for the soul.” T h e c o m p a n y ’ s f o u n d e r A n u r a d h a Naimpally (se en here) has b e en dancing internationally for over 3 0 years .

• Mar.21-apr.20 Last year was as pleasant for you as a visit to the dentist, and just as necessary. 2010 was the year to drill the “tooth” that was bothering you, and in 2011 you get your cavities filled (with gold) and your teeth capped – metaphorically. A powerful social push for you moves into alignment this month and you should know exactly what you want to do and be well on your way to doing it. But, if you need a little shove, you definitely get it by the middle of March. Expect to be in love with your career by then.
Taurus
• Apr.21-May.21 And, so begins the year of contemplating your navel and other interesting, personal things. Begin this month in solitude and sort your plans. You won’t work any less, that’s for sure, but much of what benefits you and makes you money happens behind closed doors. It’s a case of “don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.” (Such as secret plans, etc.) Your career is on fire this month, and you can do no wrong. Pay attention to your brilliant and intuitive ideas, especially those concerning travel, education, publishing or foreign influences. These can be transformative.
Gemini
• May.22-June.20 Adventure is your middle name now. You can dream, hope, and feel good about yourself: If you wish it, it will be! Reach out beyond your normal sphere. Create more diversity in your friendships and groups and you’ll find new ways to generate income and fulfill your goals. Take action and jump impulsively: Do something you’ve always wanted to do, but haven’t had the chance or courage to do. You’re more bold and enthusiastic than usual this month. As your confidence and joy increases, you’ll have lots of energy for higher studies, travel, new subjects or anything exotic.
We can celebrate the Chinese New Year traditionally on February 2nd by playing poker, or celebrate it in our hearts by saying a silent prayer that 2010 is over. According to ancient Asian tradition, we are entering “The Year of the Rabbit (or Cat),” and that means a year of quests for peaceful solutions, for a quiet home life and for minimal stress. You can bet on that.
Cancer
• June.21-July.22 Your ship is in. After years of adventuring, you’re finally docking. Whatever your issues with partnerships were in the past, those don’t apply now. It’s a new era with new royalties and residuals, new insurance settlements, mortgages, bank loans and transformative partnerships. Think about new ways to share resources, and at the same time, expand your career and social standing. You’re still working on home and family – past and present – but this month a good wind seems to be blowing in your direction. Expect a surprising career gust in March forcing new, strong action. All concerned will be left breathless in your wake.
Leo
• July.23-Aug.23 Finances were a dominant theme in 2010, and still are this month. They will not, however, define 2011. What will define this year is a spirit of adventure, the chance to travel, study or open up your world. Go ahead and focus on your financial game now – there’ll be extra planetary support from the 19th to the 21st of April. Work is still “go, go, go” with no stopping point, but at least now you know where you’re going. Relationships are intense and powerful, so take lots of short trips and communicate. Communicate a lot. Every day is good.
Virgo
• Aug.24-Sept.22 You’re entering a period of intense fun. Happiness goes along with this, of course, but fun is the operative element. It’s true, you are working constantly and that won’t change much. It’s just that you’re going to have fun doing it, and you’ll start to see (finally) the fruits of your labor. Lots of fruit. Fruit will drop into your lap from some surprising sources. Of special interest are the fruits you harvest in conjunction with a partner. The fruits of seeds sown from hard work on last years’ partnerships will astonish you, because they’re so unexpected. Enjoy!
Libra
• Sept.23-Oct.22 This month is all about you in a fun way, though it hasn’t been for a while. You’re still in your formative mode (Who are you? What is home? How do I want to work? What kind of diet do I need to live on?) and you have a couple of years of that, but something exciting began at the end of January and you’re finally having fun. Look to some big, important changes in your relationship status, with a big surprise at the beginning of March. Use this month to clean house and re-stock your bar. Expect company.
Scorpio
• Oct.23-Nov.21 Everyone is talking about “Virtual Storefronts,” and the impact the web is having on commerce and productivity. It seems that physically locking oneself into a location may not be the best use of time. This month, the best use of your time is on the phone texting or tweeting, on the computer answering emails, and finetuning your web presence. If the computer is not part of your everyday work world, that will change. This will either happen with you as a willing director of the change or unwilling victim of it. Memorize the phrase “Transformation through communication.”
Sagittarius
• Nov. 22-Dec. 21 It’s February – the month for Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year and World Nutella Day. I think it’s time for you to step out and have some fun. I know, you have so much to do this month, but that’s exactly why you need this. Beginning this month, (actually the end of January), you’re going to play more than usual, even for a Sagittarius. Creative opportunities open up like clouds on a sunny day and suddenly all your big plans are doable. You’ll want to stay in touch with everyone, from staying connected to your job to friends and social groups. And, take a road trip.
Capricorn
• Dec.22-Jan.20 2010 was quite a year for you guys, but all of that was small potatoes compared to the five-course meal you get from this month to the end of the year. All the changes that were forced on you are turning out to be the best things that could have happened to you. You shine at work, you are charming and clever to everyone you meet, and you finally get the great home you deserve. If you have to move, so be it. Let go of the past and move on to your new future ... home.
Aquarius
• Jan.21-Feb.19 It’s too bad that I can’t write a note and explain to all who aren’t Aquarians that you need to be mobile and fluid. You’ll get so much more work done if you aren’t stuck in one place, you’ll be self-actualizing and efficient, and if you utilize communication technology you will make everyone money. Embrace technology and make it your own. Put yourself out there and write. The pond you’re fishing in is too small: You need a bigger pond.
Pisces
• Feb.20-Mar.20 Pisces is happiest when he/she isn’t working overtime, weekends or getting work calls at home. These last several years have been a little intense and chaotic, but this month things are looking up. Get out from behind the desk, get out of the office, create an office in your guest room. Expect big changes in your work situation. Find a way to work remotely. Soon, your physical presence won’t be nearly as important as the work you do, and you can work anywhere. Be proactive and approach whomever needs approaching and suggest this. You may be surprised.
