OSTEOPOROSIS
is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. Osteoporosis affects one in two women and one in four men over 50 and is generally missed. Bone fracture is the “heart attack” of the bone. New treatments reduce the risk of fracture and build new bone. A bone density test is the only way to test for osteoporosis. We have the latest bone density testing equipment in Texas, and provide instant bone metabolism, medical consultation, and treatment options.
DO YOU KNOW YOUR BONE DENSITY?
Optimal health is the ideal, yet achievable, health of your body as you reach middle age and beyond. Your biological age is a measure of how well your body functions, compared to your actual calendar age. Our specialized equipment allows us to measure and evaluate your biological age, a composite of your brain age, bone age, heart age, and vessel age. We help you achieve your optimal health, a major factor in the quality of your life as you age.
TEST YOUR BIOLOGICAL AGE TO ACHIEVE OPTIMAL HEALTH.

Gynecologic Care after 40 Ask an Expert “Because gynecology is all I do, I can focus on what matters for those of us 40 and up–wellness, cancer prevention and maintaining an active physical and sexual life.”
Dr. Sherry Neyman is a board certified OB/GYN who has practiced in Austin for nearly 20 years. Her practice focuses on gynecology and wellness. “When it comes to the over-40 patient, I feel I have an instant rapport since I am experiencing the same ‘midlife’ challenges.” Her growing practice appeals to women who like knowing their gynecologist won’t suddenly leave an appointment to deliver a baby. “Because gynecology is all I do, I can focus on what matters for those of us 40 and up–wellness, cancer prevention and maintaining an active physical and sexual life.” She sees patients and performs in-office surgery at Renaissance Women’s Group–North Austin and performs major surgeries at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center and at Arise Austin Medical Center in West Lake Hills.
Sherry Neyman, MD, FACOG Renaissance Women’s Group 512.425.3875, rwgdocs.com/sherry-neyman-md Dr. Sherry Neyman, FACOG, is a board certified OB/GYN specializing in gynecology and wellness for women of all ages since 1996 as a part of Renaissance Women’s Group.
What is different about an annual visit after a woman turns 40? We have an enhanced emphasis on wellness and prevention, providing individualized counsel on diet as well as supplements to maintain bone density and manage menopausal symptoms. Of course, we start ordering mammograms at age 40 and bone density screenings at 50. We can take care of everything— blood work, sonograms, urodynamic testing for incontinence, mammograms and bone density screenings—in one visit, under one roof.
What preventive treatment do you recommend for a woman in her 40s? Many women are deficient in vitamin D and that’s very important to stay ahead of in your 40s if you want to maintain bone density. As you experience menopause and its associated lower estrogen support, you can lose over 20 percent of your bone density. If you are deficient in vitamin D and calcium in your 40s, you increase the risk of developing osteoporosis in your 50s. Don’t wait until you are in a menopausal place to increase your intake of these essential vitamins.
Why does an OB/GYN track weight, BMI and dietary habits? Because of hormonal changes in midlife, women can gain weight around the midsection that may contribute to chronic health problems like diabetes, 6 Guide to Good Health 2 0 1 6
heart disease and cancer. Weight gain from thyroid imbalances can happen suddenly and medications can help you get back to normal. We will also watch your testosterone levels. Adding a supplement can help you retain lean muscle mass.
When should a woman begin hormone testing? I tend to begin testing in a woman’s early 40s so she has the tools to regulate symptoms before they become bothersome. A soy or herbal supplement can help relieve hot flashes and melatonin may relieve sleep disturbances, but if a woman decides to incorporate hormones, we talk about a patch, pills, cream or bio-identical hormones. Insurance benefits may cover hormone therapy, including bioidenticals.
How do I start a conversation with my OB/GYN about painful intercourse? Actually, your OB/GYN should be the one to initiate a conversation about sexual health and function. I always ask before the exam so that I can look for physical causes. We may discuss options to treat painful intercourse. For decreased libido, common in a woman’s 40s and 50s, I am certified to prescribe the new female arousal medication Addyi, and we can also discuss androgen therapy.
Speaking of uncomfortable topics…what about incontinence or prolapse? As many as 50 percent of women will
experience prolapse, the relaxation of the bladder, uterus or bowel, and nearly 45 million Americans have incontinence issues. It’s common, but not normal to leak urine, so talk to your OB/GYN. You can restore your quality of life with physical therapy, medications and, as a last resort, minimally invasive surgery.
What can I do about heavy and unpredictable periods in my 40s? The median age for menopause is 51, and every woman is unique in the transition, but periods do tend to become problematic in a woman’s 40s. Focusing on gynecology helps me provide the most up-to-date treatments for bothersome midlife menstrual issues. I can offer permanent solutions such as in-office ablation and single incision hysterectomy utilizing the da Vinci robot. Minimally invasive surgery results in less downtime and discomfort. I have personally performed over 400 robotic surgeries; in my role as a certified proctor training other surgeons, I have assisted on many more.
How often should an over-40 woman see her OB/GYN? If your paps are normal, you may space out testing for up to five years. However, there is still a need to come in every year for a pelvic exam. The idea that a pap smear is the sole reason for a well woman visit is a misconception, so don’t forget to schedule an annual exam. Without a pap smear, it just gives us more time to talk about other issues.

When Should I See a Chiropractor? Ask an Expert “Spinal health will be viewed in the future much the same way that dental health is viewed today.”
Dr. Katerina Sheffield Dickey has a prediction: “Spinal health will be viewed in the future much the same way that dental health is viewed today. Poor spinal care is often tolerated in the same way that poor dental health was once tolerated. Thankfully that’s changing as people learn the importance of good spinal care. Seeing your chiropractor regularly is central to avoid accelerated aging, decreased mobility and unnecessary pain.”
Dr. Katerina Sheffield Dickey Westlake Chiropractic 512.306.1625, westlakechiropractic.com Dr. Katerina Sheffield Dickey is a board certified chiropractor who graduated from Parker University in Dallas, and the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy with honors. Her upper cervical specific approach combined with gentle full spine and extremity adjusting is structurally based, with an emphasis on global balanced weight bearing and curve restoration.
How Can I Benefit From Chiropractic? Chiropractic is a clinically proven, holistic approach to relieve musculoskeletal pain without drugs, surgery or other invasive therapies. Car wrecks, sports injuries, childhood falls, and poor posture cause the spine to misalign and lose its ability to move properly. These misalignments irritate the nerves that run through the vertebra, wear out discs and ultimately contribute to accelerated aging and poor health. Gentle spine care slows accelerated aging, restores structural integrity to the spine, relieves pressure on nerves and allows them to communicate freely and effectively. Conditions that respond favorably to structurally based chiropractic treatment are back and neck pain, sciatica, osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, non-surgical scoliosis, headaches, and even migraines. As pain is decreased and balance is restored, patients often experience positive secondary benefits, such as improved cognition, better sleep, better digestion as well as relief from hip, knee and foot pain. As a pharmacist I understand all too well the negative side effects of drugs, but as a chiropractor, the positive ‘side effects’ of chiropractic constantly amaze me.
Why Should I See a Chiropractor? According to a study published in the Journal of Manipulative and 8 Guide to Good Health 2 0 1 6
Physiological Therapeutics, chiropractic is one of the most cost-efficient forms of healthcare. Research found that people under chiropractic care spent 85 percent less on pharmaceuticals, had 62 percent fewer outpatient surgeries, 60.2 percent fewer hospital stays, and shortened their hospital stay by 59 percent when they did have to check in. These numbers are significant. It has been estimated that up to ninety-percent of world-class athletes take advantage of chiropractic care to prevent injuries and increase their performance potential. You may not be a world-class athlete, but you might be a world-class working professional, parent or spouse, and your body is every bit as valuable and important to the task. Take care of it!
How Quickly Should I Expect Results? It depends on your goals and your commitment to achieve them. Every patient is different, but typically it depends on the amount of trauma a patient has been subjected to and how long it has gone untreated. Untreated trauma builds up, causing accelerated aging, and it takes time to reverse. Some patients realize dramatic, early results, but for most, the process takes time. Exercise, core and muscle strengthening and yoga and massage therapy can support effective spine care, and patients who utilize these modalities usually see faster results.
How Should I Choose a Doctor of Chiropractic? The choice is indeed a personal one, but here are some things to look for: First and foremost, look for a doctor who will listen to your goals, do a thorough history and exam and design a custom treatment plan for you. Bedside manner is important: does the doctor display genuine care and concern for you and your family? Results, however, are the key. There are many different chiropractic techniques, and your results could vary from one technique to another. If you don’t get the results you’re looking for, don’t give up on chiropractic; look for a doctor whose technique matches your goals.
When Should I See a Chiropractor? It’s never too early to seek chiropractic care. I have a patient who started seeing a chiropractor when he was a teenager, and we found, at age 50, that he has Bertolotti’s Syndrome, a condition that typically causes pain and immobility in a person’s twenties. He credits chiropractic care for allowing him to live freely and without pain for thirty additional years, and he credits chiropractic care for keeping him mobile today. If you have pain, see a chiropractor. If you’re active and want to perform at the highest level, see a chiropractor. If you’re healthy and want to live a wellness lifestyle, see a chiropractor.

CommUnityCare practices street medicine Ask an Expert “Street Medicine is the first essential step in achieving higher levels of care.”
The Street Medicine program is led by Patricia Barrera, MA, LPC, who currently serves as CommUnityCare's Health Center practice administrator at the ARCH (Austin Resource Center for the Homeless) and DSRIP (Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment Program) Mobile Health Teams. The Street Medicine program is an important step toward implementing viable solutions for the homeless population of Austin. A well received addition to the programs in place for assisting Austin’s homeless, Street Medicine is laying a foundation for better health and wellness in our city by reaching out to those who are in desperate need of a helping hand.
Patricia Barrera, MA, LPC CommUnityCare 512.978.9015, communitycaretx.org As a bicultural and bilingual professional, Barrera works with varied populations utilizing her experience in health care management, crisis intervention, substance abuse therapy and case management. Barrera's specialty and interests lie in working with vulnerable and disenfranchised populations such as in the mental health arena and with homeless populations.
What served as the inspiration for the creation of the Street Medicine Program? How many times have you crossed over a roadway bridge, driven by an underpass or gone down a busy road in Austin? Probably more times than you can count. Many of us go along with our daily lives in a rush to get to our next appointment without a thought ever crossing our minds that there is a whole other world of people living under those bridges, underpasses and even tucked away in heavy brush throughout some of our busiest parts of town. This world is made up of individuals experiencing homelessness that have no other place to go. Many have exhausted their resources and networks, others may not have the mental or physical capacity to access a safe residence and many others just may feel this is their best option.
How is CommUnityCare addressing the need for health care in the Austin Homeless community? In an effort to reach the most vulnerable and disenfranchised in our community with health care, CommUnityCare launched a Street Medicine Program. It is a component of the CommUnityCare
1 0 Guide to Good Health 2 0 1 6
Mobile Health Teams. Street Medicine is the provision of medical care directly to those living and sleeping on the streets through mobile services such as walking teams, medical vans and outdoor clinics. In our case, we are using walking teams. For CommUnityCare, Street Medicine is the first essential step in achieving higher levels of care through assertive, coordinated and collaborative medical management. This is intended to reach out to those individuals who are experiencing homelessness who would otherwise forgo health care. The main goal for the Street Medicine team is to reach out to these individuals and provide needed health services.
Who works in the Street Medicine program and what services do they provide? The Street Medicine team is comprised of a medical provider, two nursing staff members and a case manager. These team members have significant experience in working with this population either by having worked or currently working at our clinic at the ARCH. Additionally, we are partnering with the PATH (Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness) team from ATCIC (Austin Travis County Integral Care), behavioral and mental health specialists, and the Community Health
Paramedics with the City of Austin EMS. Working collaboratively we are able to not only identify the encampments and areas where the individuals are living, but we’re also able to address the whole person’s emergency medical and mental health needs at once.
Has the Homeless Community been receptive of the Street Medicine Program? Drawing from the experience of each of the organizations represented is critical to serving the needs of this population that is often faced with a lack of resources to care for multiple chronic conditions. To date our street medicine team has been working for about month. In this month, we have accrued a wealth of knowledge on how best to serve these patients and provide them with access to health care they otherwise wouldn’t receive. The Street Medicine team has been warmly received and to quote one of our new patients who expressed his sincere gratitude. “Thank you for taking care of us, I didn’t think anyone cared”. For more information on CommUnityCare’s Street Medicine program, please contact Monica Saavedra, Director of Marketing and Community Relations at Monica.saavedra@communitycaretx.org.

I’m ready to get pregnant. How can I prepare my body to boost preconception health? We live in a health-conscious community, so it’s a way of life that will pay off when it’s time to get pregnant. Now more than ever, embrace wellness by eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and adding a prenatal vitamin each day to get the recommended dose of 400-800 micrograms of folic acid. Not all pregnancies are planned, but if you are able to talk with us three months prior to conception, your OB-GYN will provide a preconception checklist to help you follow a clear path to a healthy pregnancy. This includes assessing your vaccinations to ensure that you are up to date before getting pregnant.
Are there habits that I absolutely have to break? Yes. Your OB-GYN will provide counsel and resources to help you identify and quit any practice that will harm your baby such as having unprotected sex, smoking cigarettes, drinking excessive amounts of alcohol and taking some forms of prescription drugs and any illegal drug. Ask your physician about any areas of concern.
How do I know that I am ovulating? Your body is sending you clues each month that it is primed for pregnancy. 1 2 Guide to Good Health 2 0 1 6
Pay attention to your menstrual cycles now and track your ovulation with an over-the-counter kit. Having regular periods is a good sign that you are releasing an egg each month, so see your OB-GYN if you experience irregular, painful or heavy periods. Also, calculate your body mass index (BMI), as fat cells produce estrogen that can cause problems with ovulation in women who are underweight or overweight.
It’s taking me longer than expected to get pregnant. Should I worry? Are you over age 35? In addition to ovulation problems, maternal age is one of the leading causes of infertility. As a general rule, we ask women under 35 to consult with a physician after 12 months of trying to get pregnant. Women over 35 should raise the red flag after six months. Ideally, you have already set a preconception health appointment so we will develop a timeline together.
What is on my checklist when deciding on an obstetrician? A good rapport is essential, of course, but we also advise women to consider experience and expertise as must-haves for an OB-GYN. The majority of pregnancies proceed along as planned— from first sonogram through labor and delivery. If you do have a complication arise, however, you will benefit from partnering with a physician experienced in high-risk OB care. The RWG team has
privileges at St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas at North Austin Medical Center, with immediate access to Level III Neonatal Intensive Care if needed. What’s more, all of our nurses and sonographers are trained in providing the very latest in prenatal diagnostic services.
I’ve heard about genetic screening. Who needs this test? Advances in DNA mapping now make it easier and more affordable than ever to learn essential facts—prior to conception—that can safeguard the health of your baby. Many people are symptomless carriers of inheritable genetic disease. When two people who are carriers have a baby, there may be as much as a 1 in 4 chance of passing along the active form of a disease like cystic fibrosis. Some ethnicities are at greater risk, so ask your OB-GYN about the benefits of preconception carrier screening.
Which is better for my baby: natural childbirth or an epidural? This is an emotionally charged question for many of our Austin-area patients. We are by your side, offering support and research-supported facts about all of your pain management options, including natural pain control, or an epidural, spinal or even general anesthesia. We will support you in whatever choice you make.

Cosmetic Dentistry: A New Smile for New Self-Confidence
Ask an Expert “The most common concern we deal with is that patients want to be sure they know what they are getting and what their smile will look like.”
According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), 99.7 percent of all Americans believe a smile is an important social asset. People gravitate towards a beautiful smile because it radiates many positive qualities, including confidence, openness and warmth. More and more people each year undergo cosmetic dentistry procedures to attain the smile of their dreams. Before you decide to have a cosmetic dental procedure, it's important to know more information about specific treatments and how you can improve the chances of getting the results you are looking for. Dr. Mark Sweeney, a renowned cosmetic dentist and the founder of Austin Dental Spa, explains what cosmetic dentistry is, how certain procedures can drastically improve your physical appearance, and offers advice for those wanting a renewed, beautiful smile.
Mark Sweeney, DDS Austin Dental Spa 5512.380.1300, austindentalspa.com Dr. Mark Sweeney has practiced cosmetic dentistry for 35 years and is committed to continuing education and keeping abreast of the latest techniques in dental care, offering a range of cosmetic, general and restorative dentistry treatment options.
WHAT IS COSMETIC DENTISTRY? “Cosmetic dentistry includes a variety of procedures that can rejuvenate your teeth, gums and bite,” Dr. Sweeney says. At Austin Dental Spa, his dental team uses advanced treatments such as teeth whitening, porcelain veneers and gum lifting techniques to transform a patient’s smile. Dr. Sweeney offers the in-office teeth whitening methods of Zoom! Advanced Power, which can brighten teeth up to 8 to 12 shades, and the KöR Whitening Deep Bleaching System for deeply stained teeth. Porcelain veneers, Dr. Sweeney explains, have the ability to dramatically improve the aesthetics of your smile once the thin ceramic shells are bonded to the front of your teeth. Meanwhile, a gum lift procedure can remove excess gum tissue for patients who are experiencing a gummy smile. Cosmetic dentistry can also include restorative treatments such as dental implants for patients looking to replace missing teeth or address misalignment issues.
1 4 Guide to Good Health 2 0 1 6
WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR COSMETIC DENTISTRY TREATMENTS? Anyone can explore the possibilities of cosmetic dentistry to enhance the natural beauty of his or her smile, Dr. Sweeney says. Based on your needs, you can talk with a dentist about removing spaces, reshaping, whitening or straightening your teeth.
HOW CAN I MAKE SURE I’LL GET RESULTS THAT LOOK NATURAL? “It is important that patients choose a dentist with the proper experience and technical skill to maintain as much of the original tooth structure as possible. Nobody wants to have something done over again,” Dr. Sweeney says. He also advises to look for a cosmetic dentist that will try to improve the function of your bite and teeth in addition to aesthetics. A talented dentist, Dr. Sweeney notes, will produce results that look and feel as natural as your original teeth.
CAN I KNOW WHAT MY SMILE WILL LOOK LIKE BEFOREHAND? “The most common concern we deal with is that patients want to be sure they know what they are getting and what their smile will look like,” says Dr. Sweeney. “We are able to get very close to exactly the look the patient is going for before we ever touch their teeth.” He recommends looking for a dentist with advanced tools and technology that can provide a preview of your potential future smile with a prototype or image.

Ask an Expert “Patients have a variety of goals, from looking good in a business suit to restoring the body they once had in their youth. Most of my patients just want to look as young as they feel!”
Who gets plastic surgery? One of the biggest misconceptions about plastic surgery is that it is limited to models or people who are preparing for summer pool parties at the W. That couldn’t be further from the truth. The majority of my patients are working men and women. Patients have a variety of goals from looking good in a business suit to restoring the body they once had in their youth. Most of my patients just want to look as young as they feel!
What questions should patients interested in plastic surgery ask when deciding on a surgeon? Austin has many great plastic surgeons. Here are some questions to ask to make sure you have a good experience: 1. Is my surgeon board certified in plastic surgery? 2. Where is my surgery performed? 3. Who is performing the anesthesia for my procedure? 4. Does my surgeon commonly perform this procedure? 5. Ask to see before and after pictures. Be open about your goals that you hope to achieve from your procedure. Your plastic surgeon will help guide you and make sure that you are a good candidate for the procedure with realistic goals.

Vitalogy's patient-centered, research-backed, informal academic care philosophy has set the standard in skin cancer detection and treatment as well as overall dermatologic health and wellness in Central Texas for nearly a decade. Responding to a growing need expressed by patients for a plastic surgeon with these same health and wellness-oriented values, Vitalogy Skincare has now added Plastic Surgery to their offerings.
Johnny Franco, MD Vitalogy Skincare 512.930.3909, vitalogyskincare.com Dr. Johnny Franco began his doctoral venture in Texas, but has trained, practiced and performed thousands of surgeries from Galveston, to St. Louis, Taiwan, Belgium, Miami, and now in Austin. His experience spans the latest cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries. This RealSelf Top Doctor now brings his worldwide aesthetic expertise to Austin.
What are the newest procedures in plastic surgery?
What nonsurgical procedures do you recommend?
Butt Augmentation: The fastest growing aesthetic procedure in America is buttock augmentation, which is accomplished with silicone implants or fat transfer (known as the Brazilian Butt Lift). The Brazilian Butt Lift has allowed plastic surgeons to sculpt the body in a way that we were never able to do before. Fat is removed from unwanted areas such as the love handles and abdomen and used to sculpt the buttock and hips. In my current practice it is one of the most common procedures I perform. I truly think this procedure will continue to be more common as people continue to embrace their curves and figure.
People who get on a good skin care regimen early in life will thank themselves for it later on. Sunscreen is especially important in a city like Austin. Our love for the outdoors is incredible but sun exposure can add up over time. The damage that we do to our skin in our youth will catch up with us eventually! Botox and fillers have become so popular because they give a very natural, but rejuvenated appearance without the need for surgery or downtime. I tell patients to start with small amounts of these products, as they just want to enhance the great features they already have that make them gorgeous. The idea is to maintain your beauty and not change your unique appearance.
Breast Augmentation: Gummy bear breast implants are an incredible advancement that have improved the results that plastic surgeons have been able to achieve in both breast augmentation and breast reconstruction. The cohesive gel of these implants give them unique characteristics that allow patients more options to achieve the shape and size that they desire for their breasts. It is now possible to individualize every breast augmentation to the patient.
Who is the perfect candidate for facial fillers and Botox? Botox is perfect for anyone who is has started to notice wrinkles in their forehead and around their eyes. Botox can also be used as a liquid brow lift to open a patient’s eyes! When done correctly, Botox can give a very natural, smooth, youthful appearance. Fillers such as Restylane or Juvederm are great for anyone who has started to notice that their face is sagging, deflated or just not as youthful in appearance as it once was. The process of aging typically includes fat loss in the face so to treat this problem we need to restore the volume that has been lost as we age. Fillers do this with a simple office visit.

When it comes to knowing your options about emergency medical care, it’s important to get your answers from an expert. Dr. Lee Chilton from Neighbors Emergency Center is covering the basic questions about where to turn for the best treatment when medical emergencies arise. Knowing your options beforehand and being well educated on what emergency care is best for you, and your family, is invaluable. Get answers about the differences between freestanding emergency rooms, hospital ERs and urgent care, and learn about the benefits that come with choosing Neighbors Emergency Center as your emergency health care provider. See how Neighbors Emergency Center is making lives better, and making a positive difference in the world of health care.
Dr. Lee Chilton Neighbors Emergency Center nec24.com Dr. Lee Chilton is a proud graduate of Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Chilton joined Neighbors Emergency Center in 2013 as the Medical Director for the Mueller center, assisting with bringing the freestanding ER industry to Austin. Dr. Chilton has worked and served in Austin’s emergency rooms for more than 15 years.
What are my options if i, or someone in my family, needs immediate medical care?
What is the difference between urgent care and a freestanding emergency room?
What does it mean to receive emergency medical care by a Board Certified Physician?
When you need immediate medical care that does not require the use of 911, the first line of advice is to find emergency medical care. These options range from traditional hospital emergency rooms, freestanding emergency rooms, and urgent care centers. However, all three of these options range in their availability, wait times, and locations.
Urgent care facilities are limited in the type of care that they can provide. If you need immediate medical attention, but not on a level that prompts an ER visit, you can visit urgent care. However, unlike an ER, you will not be able to visit urgent care centers around the clock. Most urgent care centers are open anywhere from 8 hours a day to 16 hours a day. If you do visit an urgent care center, and your medical situation is deemed an emergency, you will be referred to a local ER.
For any doctor to practice medicine in the United States, they must be licensed by the state that they work in. However, just because a doctor is licensed does not mean that they are qualified to practice a medical speciality. Examples of specialties are surgery, family medicine or dermatology. Board certified doctors voluntarily meet extra standards that go beyond basic licensing. This demonstrates their expertise and requires additional education including the step of passing an exam that tests medical knowledge and clinical judgment. In addition, to remain board certified physicians must actively stay updated with the latest advances and demonstrate best practices.
What is the difference between a hospital ER and a freestanding emergency room? Hospitals and freestanding emergency rooms will provide you the same level of care in emergency. Freestanding ERs, like hospitals, operate 24/7 with the requirement of being open 24 hours with ER physicians on site. Freestanding emergency centers also must have the proper emergency equipment found in hospital ERs. One of the main differences you will find between hospital ERs and freestanding emergency rooms is the location. Traditional ERs are located on hospital grounds, while freestanding ERs operate off-site. They also normally operate independently of hospitals. Because freestanding emergency rooms are not limited to being in hospital locations, they are typically closer to patients, and provide access that is much more convenient. In addition, wait times are normally much shorter with nursing staff accessing patients quickly.

What makes Neighbors Emergency Center different than other freestanding emergency centers? What differentiates Neighbors from other freestanding emergency rooms is their sincere culture of caring. The organization is rooted in and driven by a purpose that sets them apart from the healthcare industry as a whole. Neighbors Emergency Center’s purpose drives its vision, which is inspired by their patients, culture, and community. Neighbors Emergency Center has taken it upon itself to completely reimagine what emergency care is capable of. Neighbors believes in providing extraordinary care that is dedicated to making lives better every day. Neighbors Emergency Center operates around an unfaltering vision to be “The Best Neighbors Ever.” This means providing unparalleled medical care driven by compassion, respect, and dedication.
Does Neighbors Emergency Center have Board Certified Physicians? The Neighbors Emergency Center takes pride in only hiring board certified physicians to care for patients. This allows it to serve with the dedication and knowledge patients should expect from their physicians. By doing this, it provides nothing less than the high-quality patient care they believe all emergency facilities should maintain. The hiring process targets physicians to join a team that is confident in the passion of creating a patient-focused experience with the proper medical knowledge and clinical judgment to diagnose, treat and save lives.

minimally invasive gynecologic surgeons Ask an Expert “What’s next in minimally invasive surgery? You have to see it to believe it. Soon we will be able to safely accomplish even more through less.”
Dr. Devin Garza was one of the world’s first surgeons to use a single-site robotic approach for benign gynecology, performing over 1,000 procedures and given the distinction of da Vinci Mentor/Epicenter surgeon by Intuitive Surgical, Inc. He champions the use of minimally invasive surgery (MIS), training surgeons, and lecturing around the world on robotic techniques. Last month, Dr. Garza, a board certified obgyn, co-chaired a post-graduate course in robotics at the American Association of Laparoscopic Gynecologists (AAGL) 2015 Global Congress, and addressed the pressing issues and exciting breakthroughs on the horizon for today’s gynecologic surgeons and the women they serve.
Devin Garza, MD Renaissance Women's Group 512.425.3835, devingarzamd.com Renaissance Women’s Group, an expert team of board certified obgyns, provides comprehensive obstetrics and gynecology services for women, from adolescence into their senior years. We are proud of the compassionate, caring environment in our offices, as well as the professionalism and expertise of our physicians and staff.
What is the #1 challenge that minimally invasive gynecologic surgeons face today? A surgical technique called mechanical morcellation* has disappeared from the surgeon’s toolbox, and the conversation is now focused on alternatives. A morcellator would break up tissue into small pieces for removal through small incisions. Problems arose when the devise dispersed existing unknown cancer cells in the specimen throughout the body. Rather than resorting to open surgery, I teach surgeons how to safely remove tissue using a preferred minimally invasive approach, containing tissue within a pouch, and removing often very large specimens through a one-inch incision. This gives surgeons a tool with which to maintain MIS management of a large uterus for hysterectomy and myomectomy. *Renaissance Women’s Group does NOT use morcellators for gynecologic surgery.
Who is an ideal candidate for minimally invasive surgery? People of all ages, stages and conditions benefit from MIS, but your physician will determine whether you are a high-risk or a low-risk patient for any surgery, and should discuss all viable alternatives. Increased risks include: medical conditions, previous abdominal surgeries, advanced endometriosis and large tumors. The parameters for who is and who is not a candidate for MIS can also depend on the experience of your surgeon. 2 0 Guide to Good Health 2 0 1 6
Are all surgeons trained in the minimally invasive approach?
I am considering surgery. Are there questions that I should ask my physician?
Most are, but some surgeons are more experienced than others. You would expect that the pilot of your airplane has logged many hours in the air and in flight simulation and will continue to sharpen his or her skills. It’s the same with surgeons. The type of hands-on training that I teach across the U.S. and other countries as an Epicenter/Mentor Surgeon prepares experienced physicians to perform the latest robotic techniques and safe tissue removal—often the very next day. This hopefully gives a patient who would have been offered open surgery as the only option the opportunity to have small incisions and a greatly reduced recovery time. Like the illustration of a rising tide that lifts all boats, when we further the knowledge of MIS, patients benefit.
You will, of course, have discussed all of the options to surgery, and the pros and cons of an MIS approach. If your physician does not recommend an MIS approach, due to the size of your uterus, especially with the morcellator unavailable, then I would ask: 1. Why is this not going to be a minimally invasive surgery? At Renaissance Women’s Group, our MIS rate approaches 99 percent. 2. Is there a surgeon you trust in the local medical community that can perform this particular surgery using MIS? Collaboration among surgeons is key to maintaining a high MIS rate for our patients. 3. Is there a scenario that always warrants an open surgical approach? The answer should be: Rarely. Even with cancer present, surgeons perform MIS 80 percent of the time.
How do you teach physicians to perform surgery? At my advanced and masters level courses, we take a systematic approach— with reproducible steps—so that surgeons learn how to manage complex cases. Sometimes I narrate as I perform the procedure live or via teleconference, or most often, refer to video from prior surgery. At the 2015 AAGL Global Congress course, for example, we used cadavers, robotic simulators and taught tissue extraction using plastic models, extracting beef tongue through a one-inch opening.
What’s on the horizon in MIS? There is international buzz around the new da Vinci Xi robotic platform, and we were among the first to use it. The new platform will further improve surgical outcomes in gynecologic surgeries, as well as other specialties. Technological advancements, including improved vision, increased range of motion and access to complex pathology, all help maintain MIS.
painful periods Ask an Expert “Heavy menstruation and severe cramps should be evaluated further by a specialist.”
Most women experience discomfort when Aunt Flo comes to visit. However, there are varying degrees of pain associated with menstruating, as it affects women differently depending on the symptoms and causes. Heavy menstruation and severe cramps not alleviated by healthy lifestyle and use of over-the-counter pain relievers should be evaluated further by a specialist. When your body doesn’t respond to these tactics, it could potentially be more serious and even require surgery. Endometriosis, adenomyosis, uterine fibroid tumors, ovarian cysts and prolapse are some of the common diagnoses for women suffering from pelvic pain and/or abnormal bleeding.
Lisa M. Jukes, MD Dr. Lisa M. Jukes, MD 512.301.6767, lisamjukesmd.com Lisa M. Jukes is a board certified OB/GYN who specializes in gynecologic health and wellness and focuses on minimally invasive procedures.
Dr. Lisa M. Jukes outlines the causes and treatment options for heavy menstruation and agonizing cramps.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF AN ABNORMAL PERIOD? One sign is pain that doesn’t respond to Motrin, or [the patient] has to dose frequently and take several Motrin to be able to get relief and go about their normal activity. As far as unusually heavy bleeding (i.e. Changing a Kotex every hour or two.) that would be considered not normal. Staining bed clothes at night or having to get up a couple times in the night to change a Kotex would also be considered not normal. If your pain does not respond to various therapies (healthy diet, exercise, pain relievers, birth control), if you are bleeding between periods, experiencing a heavy flow or if your menstrual cycle is interfering with your quality of life, preventing you from going to work or leaving the house, then it is time to seek help from a women’s health professional.
WHY DO HEAVY MENSTRUATION AND CRAMPS OCCUR? Painful menstrual cycles can occur as young as the early teenage years, but tend to peak in a woman’s 20s and 30s. The painful symptoms typically go away with pregnancy and then oftentimes return for women in their 40s. Pregnancy can provide relief of 2 2 Guide to Good Health 2 0 1 6
symptoms from endometriosis and pelvic pain for several years. Endometriosis is a condition in which endometrial type cells have implanted outside the uterus, causing severe cramps, abnormal bleeding and other pain, including pain with intercourse. Endometriosis can affect at least 25 percent of women. It can be genetic or even associated with congenital uterine anomalies. There’s a condition related to endometriosis called adenomyosis and that’s a common reason for severe menstrual cramps as well as heavy bleeding. It’s a condition where the endometrial lining has implanted in the muscle wall of the uterus. Pain can also be caused by uterine fibroids and can cause bleeding problems if the fibroid is affecting the lining of the uterus. Fibroids are benign, non-cancerous, fibrous-like tumors in the myometrium (muscle layer of the uterus). Pelvic pain should be further investigated to assure that it is not related to a gastrointestinal, urologic or musculoskeletal disorder. Heavy bleeding can even start with a young woman’s first few menses. Up to 25 percent of these adolescents may have a hereditary bleeding disorder, which can be determined by simple blood work. Later on, heavy bleeding, bleeding between cycles or with intercourse can be secondary to overgrowth of the
endometrium, uterine polyps, fibroids or adenomyosis.
WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS? The first step would be to see how the body responds to pain relievers and possibly hormonal contraceptives. If the body is not responding, the next step is evaluation and possible ultrasound in order to determine the etiology. The treatment depends on what we find and whether that person wants to have children or has completed their family. If the findings are suggestive of endometriosis based on history and physical exam, then we typically proceed with a laparoscopy, which, in my experience, I prefer using da Vinci surgery. The da Vinci robotic system gives me 3D visualization, better magnification and use of instruments that have more precise movements. Laparoscopy allows me to see into the abdomen through small incisions in order to diagnose what is causing the pain or bleeding. I am now able to perform more complicated, minimally invasive surgeries rather than making large abdominal incisions, including single-site umbilical laparoscopic surgery. With da Vinci, patients experience less pain, less risk of infection and scarring, and shorter recovery time, among many other benefits.

Dental Health Guide Ask an Expert “Being proactive, instead of reactive, makes treatment and its outcome more beneficial and longer lasting.”
When choosing a doctor, it’s smart to consider your personal goals for your health. This goes for searching for a dental health professional as well. The longevity of your teeth and the look of your smile are important to your overall well being. Not all dental treatments are equal, and you want a dentist who has experience with the services and treatments you seek. Choose an office with a caring staff who takes the time to really listen to you. No two patients should be given the exact treatment. Your personal desires, budget, and long term goals should all play a part in the treatments you opt for. The Hills Dental Spa offers a luxurious spa-like environment for your total comfort, but even more importantly, the staff is trained to listen carefully to your needs and work for you to create a customized plan for your best health.
Benjamin L. Nemec, DDS The Hills Dental Spa 512.347.0044, thehillsdentalspa.com Dr. Benjamin Nemec is a board certified general dentist with advanced studies in cosmetic and implant dentistry, CAD/CAM 3-D dentistry, and special training on TMJ and occlusion.
Whether you are looking for cosmetic solutions to change the look of your smile, or just want to learn what you can do to keep your teeth healthy for the rest of your life, Dr. Nemec and The Hills Dental Spa can help you formulate a solution.
What can be done to reduce overall tooth sensitivity? Many people suffer from chronic discomfort in their teeth. Some people can never drink ice water because the cold liquid causes the teeth to ache. While sensitivity is a common problem, there are solutions to reduce and eliminate discomfort. Several different factors can cause sensitivity, including misalignment of the teeth that leads to a destructive bite, gum recession, nighttime grinding, cavities, or even using the wrong dental products at home. A simple change of toothpaste could help. Or you may need to discuss realigning the teeth for a better functioning bite to reduce pressure on specific teeth. It is always a good idea to ensure any active decay is removed to reduce sensitivity caused by cavities. Nighttime clenching and grinding could be the culprit, in which

case a custom-made splint can relieve sore jaw muscles and reduce pain in the teeth. We can now provide night guards that are streamlined and far less bulky than the traditional style. There is rarely just one cause for tooth sensitivity, but it is treatable and at your next dental checkup, you should discuss it with your dentist.
If you know you are trying to get pregnant, discuss your dental health with your dentist and make a plan to be as healthy as possible before pregnancy. And if you are already pregnant, consider seeing your dental hygienist two to three times during the pregnancy to help treat or even prevent infection in the gums.
Is it safe to have dental work during pregnancy?
What’s one thing that will prevent dental pain and emergencies?
Good dental health is always important, but especially during pregnancy. To avoid prenatal issues caused by poor dental health, be sure your mouth is healthy before you are pregnant by having any decay and cavities removed, rebuild any teeth that show signs of fractures or cracks, and be sure your gums are healthy and free of infection. Pregnancy Gingivitis is a common occurrence, even for patients who normally have no dental problems. This condition occurs when your body is focused on the health of the fetus and infection begins to set in your gums. Prenatal issues can be linked to the mother’s poor dental health and can be as serious as low birth weight and even premature birth.
No one wants to be in pain, and dental pain has been described by some as being worse than child birth! The best way to prevent dental pain and emergency situations is to consult with your dentist to replace any old and failing fillings before the tooth is symptomatic. Many people seek dental treatment only when they have pain. But did you know, if you remove any infection and decay before you feel it, the treatments will cost much less and can be done pain-free. By ensuring all of your teeth are healthy today, you can avoid costly and painful emergencies and thus keep your teeth longer.

Paige and Natalie provide in-depth consultation and diagnostic testing to put together a comprehensive profile of an individual. This includes an assessment of eating habits, lifestyle, symptoms, and current medications in order to best determine your nutritional deficiencies. What is it like during the initial consultation? During the initial consultation, our goal is to get to know you and determine which changes can be made in a way that encourages long term success. The first session is focused on each individual's lifestyle and habits. We discuss sleep, energy, mood, diet and exercise. During this conversation, we determine the most efficient way to start on the path to reaching your goal. No one session is ever the same. Mostly because everyone 2 6 Guide to Good Health 2 0 1 6
is different, from their genetic makeup to their daily routines. Our approach and recommendations are solely based on your individual needs. We encourage you to make small changes—which over time can be highly impactful. Often people think they have to make a huge lifestyle change to get their health back on track. However, small steps count and all progress is success.
What is a common challenge clients have? One of the most common challenges is people not knowing what to eat and when. We have a lot of people who say, “I just don’t know what to eat.” It’s also important to note that we are not the food police. Although, we do like to discuss the difference between healthier choices and unhealthier choices, we all have been inundated from TV and Internet with good vs. bad food when truly it can be simplified to encouraging healthier habits within your current lifestyle. Natalie makes sure all clients know this as this takes the pressure off a little bit. Overeating is the main culprit, along with not providing the body with the nutrients it really needs. Paige implements supplemental solutions when nutrient deficiencies are present. The successful approach we put forth is to educate people on how to moderate food choices to make healthier decisions and supplement where necessary.
How do you help them? We establish goals with our clients and typically have no more than three things to work on per week. These goals are a combination of our recommendations and you telling us what you are wanting and willing to do. We ask what you feel will be realistic. We always offer support along the journey—this may be through simple email check-ins or follow-up sessions. The goal, and the clients readiness to make changes determines how much support you may need. This is all determined during the first session, and a plan of action is set up based on these factors. We strive to be your partners in health all along the way.
Is it hard to maintain the results? Making behavior and lifestyle changes is never easy. However, once the ball begins rolling, and you start to feel better mentally and physically, then it’s easier to stay on a path to great health. We are here as a support system for that path. Our aim is to achieve long term success. Again, how you feel is an accumulation of what you are doing the majority of the time. If you are choosing healthier options most of the time, you will see this reflected in your health.
revolutionary breast screening 3D mammography—the revolutionary breast screening that detects 41 percent more cancer.
Ask an Expert
The year 2015 was an exciting one for radiology as we watched the expansion of a new technology, 3D mammography, or breast tomosynthesis. ARA acquired five new 3D mammography units and we are pleased to say that we will continue to add units throughout 2016 as the 3D mammogram becomes the new standard of excellence in care for breast screening.
Austin Radiological Association Austin Radiological Association 512.453.6100, ausrad.com
What is 3D mammography? This technologically advanced scan gives radiologists the ability to view inside the breast layer by layer. During this simple exam, multiple images, or “slices,” are taken of different angles of the breast, exposing fine details that might be obscured by overlapping tissue. Breast imaging radiologists can now view a mammogram in a brand new way.
What is it like getting a 3D mammogram? Exactly like getting a standard mammogram except the scan takes a few seconds longer as the machine arm passes over the breast. There is no additional breast compression and the scanner is able to produce both a standard and 3D mammogram simultaneously.
What are the benefits of 3D mammography?
Who should have 3D mammography?
• 41 percent more cancer detected. By revealing more of the breast tissue, 3D mammography improves early detection of cancer. Studies have shown an up to 41 percent increase in the number of invasive breast cancers detected. • Fewer callbacks. Because radiologists can have a closer look at features in the breast, they are better able to distinguish between benign and cancerous abnormalities. That means fewer women get called back for additional imaging, cutting down on anxiety and expense. With 3D mammography, the need for additional imaging has been reduced significantly.
Studies have shown that all patients can benefit from this revolutionary technology regardless of breast density or family history. Early detection is the best defense against breast cancer and 3D mammography has been shown to be more effective at detecting cancer than conventional mammography. Women should begin having yearly screening mammograms at age 40.
Is it safe? Technological advances have reduced the radiation dose needed for mammography and the benefit of early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer far outweighs the risk. Our mammography facilities are accredited by the American College of Radiology.
Is it covered by insurance? 3D mammography (also known as breast tomosynthesis) is covered by Medicare and by a number of other insurance companies, although not all. ARA staff will help each patient determine their insurance status.
Where can I get a 3D mammogram? ARA Diagnostic Imaging has introduced 3D mammography to a number of our 17 outpatient offices. Please go online at ausrad.com or call 512.453.6100 to find the location nearest your work or home and make an appointment.

Know Your Numbers Ask an Expert “Disease prevention is a numbers game that can be controlled. Take steps to be aware and accountable. ”
Knowledge is power and can save your life.
Heart disease, the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States, claims more lives than all forms of cancer combined. Because of this staggering statistic, St. David’s HealthCare recommends taking steps to reduce your risk factors and knowing the important indicators of your health. Dr. Suzanne Wetherold explains why “knowing your numbers” and family history can lead to a longer, healthier life.
Suzanne Wetherold, MD St.David's HealthCare 512.407.7000 austinheart.com Suzanne Wetherold, M.D., is a cardiologist at Austin Heart. She practices at Heart Hospital of Austin, which is part of St. David’s HealthCare.
What are the key indicators for heart health?
What are the target numbers for a healthy heart?
What can women do to reduce their risk of heart disease?
Medical conditions strongly correlated with heart disease include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and being overweight. As such, it is important to know the following numbers:
• Blood pressure should typically be less than 120 systolic and less than 80 diastolic for an adult age 20 or over.
Healthy numbers mean a healthy heart. Women can significantly reduce their risk of heart disease by taking the following steps:
• Blood pressure – the force of blood against the arteries when the heart beats and rests
• A BMI range of 18.5 to 24.9 and a waistline smaller than 35 inches is considered healthy.
• Cholesterol – a fat-like substance that is found in all cells of the body
• A normal blood sugar level is less than 100 mg/dL after fasting, and less than 140 mg/dL two hours after eating. When measuring these key indicators, be aware of where you stand—and also pay attention to where you are going. If your numbers are high, but trending down with each check, that’s a sign you’re on the right path to a healthier heart.
• Glucose levels – sugar stored in the blood as the body's main source of energy • Body mass index (BMI) – the measurement of body fat based on weight and height Most of these numbers are tested at annual checkups, so it’s important to “know your numbers” and understand what they mean. By keeping these numbers within the recommended healthy range, individuals can improve their heart health and reduce the risk of heart disease. Also, it is just as important that people know their family history and risk of hereditary diseases. Patients should share this information with their healthcare providers to evaluate risks and determine steps toward prevention.
2 8 Guide to Good Health 2 0 1 6
• A total cholesterol score of less than 180 mg/dL is considered optimal.
At what age should women “know their numbers”? The earlier the better! Heart disease can occur at any age, and it can take years before any symptoms appear. According to the American Heart Association, prevention of a heart attack begins at age 20. Visit your doctor for regular checkups and become aware of your heart health numbers. The frequency of follow-up visits will depend on each person’s level of risk.
1. Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and low-fat dairy products. 2. Exercise regularly. Try to walk, run, bike or dance at least 30 minutes, five days a week. 3. Quit smoking and limit alcohol. 4. Manage stress by getting enough sleep, taking time for yourself and using meditation or calming techniques. 5. Visit a physician regularly for annual health checks and determine high-risk medical conditions. Disease prevention is a numbers game that can be controlled. Take steps to be aware and accountable. “Knowing your numbers”—and how they compare to healthy, normal levels—is a powerful way to take charge of your health. Heart Hospital of Austin offers an easy screening for heart disease. In just minutes, a HeartSaver CT scan can detect heart disease in its earliest and most treatable stages—long before there are any symptoms. Similar to having an X-ray, the screening is fast, painless and highly accurate in determining the extent of calcified blockage in the coronary arteries. Women ages 45-70 can self-refer for the screening. If outside that age range, a physician referral is required.
TREAT YO SELF
Put yourself first in 2016
Have a case of the Mondays? Feeling down and out? Refer to this list whenever you’re in a slump and, as always, do as Parks and Rec’s Donna Meagle and Tom Haverford do and ‘Treat. Yo. Self.’ By Molly McManus
GO ON A WALK. Studies show that daily walking strengthens your heart; lowers disease risk; tones your arms, core, legs and derriere; boosts vitamin D levels and gives you energy. Want more out of your walk? Once a week, take a “gratitude walk” and focus on all the positive things in your life.
RUN A BATH. Who doesn’t love a good soak with romantic candlelight, a glass of red wine and a great novel? Get an aromatherapy candle or some bath oils, and slip into deep relaxation.
MEDITATE. Find a park, a beautiful spot on Lady Bird Lake or a peaceful area of your home. Meditation helps with centering and mental clarity, and increases creativity, happiness and emotional stability while decreasing stress, anxiety and physical ailments, such as high blood pressure. Not into meditation? Take a yoga class. Yoga has all the benefits of meditation, plus it’s a really great workout. For those of us who love a bargain, here are a few free meditation and yoga classes offered throughout Austin: Q Meditation in Austin meditation group, Wednesdays, 7 p.m., meditationinaustin.com Q AOMA meditation class on Sundays, 5 p.m., aoma.edu Q Yoga at Cherrywood Coffeehouse, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m., cherrywoodcoffeehouse.com Q Yoga at Lululemon (downtown location), Tuesdays, 7:30 p.m., lululemon. com
MAKE A MULTIPLECOURSE MEAL…FOR YOURSELF. Look up interesting recipes, find a wine or cocktail that pairs well, put on a podcast (Serial, anyone?) or your favorite album and enjoy the solitude and hard work you put in for you. Include a decadent dessert or a meal that brings back happy memories.
GET A FACIAL OR MASSAGE. Facials can soften expression-induced lines around eyes, lips and brows, help expel acne-causing toxins and de-puff and brighten the eye areas. Go to an experienced aesthetician or do a quick Google search to find how to perform your own facial at home, free of charge. Massage is proven to help alleviate stress, tight muscles and pain; lessen depression and anxiety; increase joint flexibility and promote tissue regeneration. It’s a great alternative to a chiropractor or physical therapist, and instantly makes you feel better.
TAKE YOURSELF ON A DATE.
GET A MANI/PEDI. This is all about pampering yourself and giving some much-needed attention to those phalanges. Another option? Get your hair cut or styled, or schedule a makeup consultation. Sometimes looking beautiful on the outside can help you feel beautiful on the inside.
CHECK SOMETHING OFF YOUR BUCKET LIST.
CLEAN OUT… SOMETHING.
It doesn’t matter if it’s to the movies, dinner, an outing to an art gallery or some hot event happening in town, going on a festive excursion with yourself, for yourself, can be a very rewarding experience.
Whether it’s your car, attic, closet or desk, cleansing is good for the soul. You may not love the act of cleaning (try channeling Thich Nhat Hanh), but it has been shown to reduce stress. Not only that; you will instantly gain a sense of accomplishment.
TRY SOMETHING NEW.
PLAN A VACATION.
Getting outside your comfort zone can be challenging, but challenging yourself builds confidence, and you may stumble upon something you would’ve never known you liked if you hadn’t tried it.
TURN OFF THE ELECTRONICS. Try it for a couple of hours, or better yet, an entire day. It’s more difficult than you may think, but it will open you up to endless possibilities that have nothing to do with work emails or your friends’ latest Facebook posts.
BUY SOMETHING IMPRACTICAL BUT FABULOUS. Whoever said retail therapy was a bad thing? (Velvet slippies, cashmere socks, velvet pants, cashmere turtleneck. Treat yo self!)
Whether it’s a close-in getaway or an out-ofcountry expedition, plan a weekend or week when you can truly unwind. Traveling feeds into your curiosity and adventurous nature, and allows you to spend time with yourself and loved ones outside of the, at times, monotonous routine.
WRITE IN A JOURNAL. Take a page out of Julia Cameron’s The Vein of Gold, and commit to three pages of daily, longhand morning writing. According to Cameron, the pages will center, empower, comfort, stimulate, intrigue, challenge and activate you. They need not be literary masterpieces, just whatever comes to your head: “I need to grocery shop today,” or “Sarah was really weird at work yesterday.” Whatever is up there, put it on paper. It’s a way to clear the clutter and focus on the more important things in life.
VOLUNTEER. Volunteering helps people, creates connection and, more importantly, it feels great! Research links acts of generosity to better health and happiness.

taking care of your skin The do’s and don’ts of caring for your skin.
Taking the best care of your skin includes seeing a dermatologist for a healthy skin check. Skin cancer prevention and being sun smart keeps skin healthy and beautiful for a lifetime.
Dr. Daniel J. Ladd, Jr. Tru-Skin Dermatology 512.451.0139, tru-skin.com Daniel J. Ladd, Jr., D.O.is the Medical Director and Founder of Tru-Skin™ Dermatology in Austin, Texas. He earned his BA from the University of Texas at Austin and received his medical degree from Des Moines University in 1999. He completed his Dermatology residency at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri in conjunction with the Dermatology Institute of North Texas in 2004. In addition to general dermatology and cosmetic dermatology, Dr. Ladd is board certified in Mohs micrographic surgery.
How can I tell if I need a skin check with a dermatology provider? Many things increase your risk of getting a skin cancer. The more you have the more important it becomes to get a skin check with a dermatology provider. Let's review a few: Age: Overall, 1 in 5 or 20 percent of Americans will get at least one skin cancer at some point in their lives. If you are over the age of 65 your risk of skin cancer increases to 1 in 2 (50 percent). That's a huge number of people. However, you should not wait until you are 65 years of age to get your first skin check if you have multiple other risk factors for skin cancer. Gender: Men are more likely than women to get skin cancer, but both men and women are susceptible. Family: If you have Northern European ancestors you have a higher risk of skin cancer. This is because the skin genes those ancestors passed on to you were built for climates that are much less sunny than our Texas sky. However, skin cancer rates for all skin types/ethnicities have been increasing. If you or anyone in your family has had skin cancer that also puts you at a higher risk. Eyes: Having blue or green eyes is a risk factor. Spots: Having multiple freckles and/or multiple moles are risk factors. 3 0 Guide to Good Health 2 0 1 6
Sunburns: If you sunburn easily, that's a risk factor. In fact, if you had a blistering sunburn during your childhood that doubles your risk of skin cancer. Indoor Tanning: Everyone wants to look good and feel good. I can't tell you how many people tell me, "Tanned fat looks better than pale fat." Indoor tanning is the problem with this thinking because most of the UVA ultraviolet rays that tanning facilities use actually penetrate much deeper in your skin and do more damage than regular sunshine, which is mostly UVB. This is why people who are in the habit of indoor tanning have a higher risk of skin cancer.
and/or squamous skin cancers, every 3 months. Most patients who have either had a skin cancer in the past or who have multiple risk factors for skin cancer are seen every 6 months. Those with very few risk factors and no history of skin cancers are typically seen once a year. Of course these are just guidelines. If a patient sees a new mole, a changing mole or a skin lesion that won't heal or is bleeding, we recommend they schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
How often should I get my skin checked by a dermatology provider?
Tru-Skin Dermatology is excited to be the first in central Texas to offer the newest innovations in skin cancer treatment, specifically SRT-100 and EBT (electronic brachytherapy). These non-invasive new technologies are revolutionary, because for the first time we can offer patients a pain-free option for treating skin cancers and keloid scars. Many skin cancer patients have already experienced Mohs surgery, which has excellent cure rates but requires the patient to tolerate needles, scalpels and stitiches. When I explain to patients that SRT and EBT can deliver excellent cure rates without surgery they breathe a tremendous sigh of relief.
This depends on how many risk factors you have for skin cancer. However, the majority of patients I see during a typical day in clinic are long overdue on their skin checks. Some people know they need a skin check but get too busy to schedule one. Others simply don't realize how important getting a skin check is. Always ask your dermatology provider to perform a head to toe skin exam and tell you if you have any suspicious spots. At Tru-Skin we see our highest risk patients, who have had a recent melanoma skin cancer or multiple basal

Hormones and You Since hormones rule your body, have your hormonal balance assessed by an endocrinologist to optimize your health. Dr. Simone Scumpia of Austin Thyroid and Endocrinology outlines everything you need to know about hormones and their effect on the body.
Simone Scumpia, MD FACE FRCP FNLA Austin Thyroid & Endocrinology 512.467.2727, austinthyroid.com Dr. Simone Scumpia treats all thyroid and endocrine (hormonal) ailments with emphasis on optimal health and biological age.
HORMONES AND ENDOCRINOLOGY Endocrinology is the science of hormones, which affect every cell and every function in your body. The glands secreting these hormones form your endocrine system, a tightly interconnected system with thousands of feedback loops. It is far more complex than any supercomputer today. Hormones control everything in your body from birth to death. Without hormones, your body cannot function. Examples of hormones: estrogen, testosterone, insulin and hormones like thyroid, cortisol, adrenal and pituitary.
WHAT ARE ENDOCRINE DISEASES? They are diseases caused by a malfunction of one or more endocrine glands in your body. Examples: thyroid, osteoporosis, metabolic syndrome and obesity, hirsutism, menopause, low testosterone in males, andropause and impotence, polycystic ovaries, irregular or lack of menstrual periods, high and low calcium, and diabetes.
WHAT FACTORS AFFECT YOUR ENDOCRINE SYSTEM? Aging, other diseases, stress, environmental and genetic factors do influence your endocrine system. Aging changes how hormones are produced and absorbed by your body. Genetic factors and other diseases can do the same. Stress triggers a cascade of hormones that affect your heart, kidneys and other organs. Recent research identified endocrine disrupting chemicals in our environment.
WHY SEE AN ENDOCRINOLOGIST? Hormone treatments must be followed by a hormone specialist 3 2 Guide to Good Health 2 0 1 6
(endocrinologist) the same way heart disease is followed by a heart specialist (cardiologist). An endocrinologist has years of special training in diagnosing and treating your hormone imbalances. Endocrine diseases are often missed, since symptoms are often subtle and easy to brush aside. An endocrinologist starts out with a thorough physical evaluation looking for these telltale sings, then follows up with a battery of blood and other lab tests. Often, additional highly specialized tests are involved to identify the root cause of your hormonal imbalance.
WHAT IS THYROID DISEASE? Thyroid disease affects 30 million Americans, yet half of them do not know they have it. It is called the “silent disease.” One in eight women will develop a thyroid disorder in their life; women are five to eight times more likely than men to develop hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. Thyroid ailments include Graves’ and Hashimoto disease, goiter, thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. Thyroid problems require lifelong attention. Each person has a different genetic set point for TSH, the thyroid stimulation hormone.
WHAT IS OSTEOPOROSIS? Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. Osteoporosis affects one in two women and one in four men over the age of 50 and is generally missed. Bone fracture is considered to be the heart attack of the bone and can have major consequences on your quality of life, from reduced mobility to potential loss of mobility altogether. A bone density test is the only way to test for osteoporosis. We
perform such testing and provide consultation on bone metabolism and osteoporosis treatment.
HORMONE MYTHS DEBUNKED The facts about some hormone myths: -Bioidentical hormones are not human identical and may cause complications. -Fountain of youth hormones (otherwise known as human growth hormones) can cause serious side effects when used for anti-aging. -hCG diets (HCG) by themselves do not cause weight loss, but can cause irregular periods for women and breast enlargement for men. -Hormone treatment of fatigue, depression or anti-aging should be avoided due to many side effects it can cause. -Adrenal fatigue is not a real disease, but adrenal failure is a life threatening disease.
WHAT IS OPTIMAL HEALTH AND BIOLOGICAL AGE? Medicine addresses disease treatment and prevention. Optimal health and biological age deal with your health before disease prevention or treatment. We focus on optimal health, the ideal yet achievable health of your body as you reach middle age and beyond. Our specialized equipment allows us to measure and evaluate your biological age, a measure of how well or poorly your body is functioning relative to your actual calendar age. Biological age is a composite of several “ages” such as brain age, bone age, heart age and vessel age. Optimal health focuses on your wellness before disease can be identified; it is a step before disease prevention and does improve the quality of your life.
Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery Ask an Expert “Common symptoms include difficulty with night vision and driving, glare from headlights and difficulty reading.”
Westlake Eye Specialists explainS the advancements in cataract surgery.
Cataract surgery is an inevitable part of the aging process given our increase in life expectancy as well as the desire for an active lifestyle necessitating good vision. Cataracts affect more than half of Americans over age 65. Gone are the days when cataract surgery was an inpatient hospital ordeal. Today, this procedure has become streamlined and incredibly sophisticated. The latest of these technological advances is laser assisted cataract surgery.
Zarmeena Vendal, MD Westlake Eye Specialists 512.472.4011, westlakeeyes.com Dr. Zarmeena “Meena” Vendal is the owner of Westlake Eye Specialists. She specializes in the treatment of diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts, as well as providing comprehensive ophthalmic care. Her surgical specialties include glaucoma lasers, glaucoma surgery, cataract surgery and PRELEX refractive surgery.
WHAT IS A CATARACT? A cataract is clouding or yellowing of our own natural lens inside our eye. This occurs slowly as we age as a result of protein build-up in the lens. Cataracts prevent the passing of light to the inside of the eye and cause glare and loss of vision as a result. Common symptoms include difficulty with night vision and driving, glare from headlights and difficulty reading. Fortunately, this is a totally curable condition with outpatient surgery.
WHAT DOES THE SURGERY ENTAIL? Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure that can be as short as 15 to 20 minutes long. The entire lens is removed through micro-incisions and replaced with an artificial lens implant made of acrylic that usually does not have to be replaced. Surgery is performed under IV sedation, one eye at a time, and once a cataract is removed, it never grows back.
3 4 Guide to Good Health 2 0 1 6
WHAT IS LASER CATARACT SURGERY? Until recently, cataract surgery was always performed with a blade. Now we have the ability to use femtosecond lasers, similar to Lasik, to assist in cataract surgery. The laser measures the patient's eye shape prior to the procedure and customizes the incisions as a result. The incisions are then constructed with the help of the laser computer and without a blade. Usually, the entire laser treatment is finished under 30 seconds! In that time, the physician is able to create up to six different incisions to aid with the surgery.
WHY CHOOSE LASER? The laser procedure has many benefits, making it a great tool to use during surgery. Each treatment consists of an ultrasound, which helps customize incisions specifically to each patient. The incisions are then constructed in a very predictable fashion with great accuracy and seal incredibly well as a result. The
laser is also very effective in treating astigmatism. While blade surgery cannot reliably remove astigmatism because it is very difficult to place corrective incisions at the right depth, the laser is able to measure the patient's cornea accurately and place the incisions at the perfect depth. Astigmatism is managed quite effectively as a result. Finally, the laser can be safer in certain eye conditions as opposed to the blade.
WHICH LASER IS THE BEST? Westlake Eye has had great results with the LenSx laser. This particular laser creates excellent corneal incisions and has led the way in FDA approval and software upgrades. In addition, the support staff for this laser is outstanding and ensures that it is in perfect condition. Performing well over 500 laser surgeries to date, Westlake Eye strives to deliver cutting edge technology to patients and the laser has been a great addition to its practice, with patients reporting they are pleased with the results.

I’ve always said that breast reconstruction and cosmetic surgery are intimately intertwined and that you don’t have to accept a different standard of beauty because you’ve previously had cancer. Those are my core beliefs—the very cornerstones of my philosophy regarding your reconstruction experience. As a female surgeon with fellowship training in microsurgery and reconstructive surgery, I blend both my expertise from MD Anderson and my cosmetic surgery experience from UT Southwestern, to offer every patient a balanced and beautiful cosmetic result. When considering reconstruction, it’s important that we participate in an open dialogue. I’m
actually learning about you during this process as much as I’m advising you, because let’s face it, there are no cookie-cutter reconstructions. Every patient is unique, and your individuality affects your final outcome. That’s why it’s my belief that a consultation should be exactly that—an ongoing conversation resulting in the refinement of ideas and options before proceeding with your treatment plan. I find my breast cancer patients to be inspiring— your tenacity and resilience challenge me to find better, more aesthetic solutions for you. Currently, I offer the full range of reconstructive options including DIEP flaps, implant-based reconstructions, oncoplastic procedures, fat grafting, and additional revisions and refinements. I also specialize in other cosmetic procedures such as breast augmentation and reduction, body contouring, tummy tucks and mommy makeovers.
