Ashley Erickson is the Texas regional editor for Competitor magazine, a staff writer for The Austin Times and spends her free time freelancing, tweeting as @aaericks and training with Rogue Running. She is also the sales operations specialist at Pervasive Software. Ashley moved to Austin from Southern California two years ago, and is almost fully adjusted to her new life as a Texan. This month’s issue features her second article for austinwoman and she loves the community of strong women she is discovering in Austin.

What surprised you about your story on Revelation Fitness? Any “revelations?”

(Please pardon the pun.)

I realized I am a lot more out of shape than I thought! I had heard of Revelation Fitness before and have a few coworkers at Pervasive who went through the program, but I was surprised at just how detailed the program really is. I am glad I got to do the orientation and a workout to see just how hard their clients work – and how much it pays off. The level of care that trainers put into each client’s progress inspired me to put that same level of care into my own fitness routine.

What are your fitness goals and New Year’s resolutions for 2011?

I just started the ZOOMA Half Marathon training group at Rogue Running, so my main fitness goal for 2011 is to keep up with the group and finish the Half Marathon next April here in Austin. After that? My goal is to keep up my running once I am not in a structured group.

Any tips on how to make them stick throughout the year? How do you ensure exercise and fitness are a part of your daily life? (I see your running tweets and they inspire me!)

Training groups are a great way to keep motivated.

Austin is such an active city, if you don’t have time to join a group, find a running buddy. Having someone out there going through the sweat and miles with you definitely keeps you on your game. The hardest part is getting out there – once you start moving your feet and feel your progress – it becomes easy!

My Surprising Resolutions M

y New Year’s resolutions surfaced in early December. And it wasn’t some dreamy list I created early one morning over a cup of coffee.

My New Year’s resolutions popped up unexpectedly. Forcefully.

It happened right in the middle of doing “December” things: Shopping, decorating and baking. Busy girl. Working hard to get my obligatory holiday madness accomplished alongside a brand new, full-time job.

In late November, I was hired as the community affairs director at Spirit 105.9 FM. Great people. Great mission. Great job.

But guess what? Things weren’t working out so great for me at home. Coming home after dark to a cold house and a hungry family was a ginormous pile of mother guilt that I had never experienced before. It stressed me out. A lot.

I kept thinking of my youngest, Sara, coming home to an empty house. And my weary husband coming home to a teary, torn wife. So we sat down and talked about options. And then I did something kinda crazy.

I walked in on Day Four of my full-time job and asked my boss if perhaps, maybe … he would consider taking my position parttime. He was surprised. Startled. He asked why. This is what I told him: “I know this is a surprise to you. And honestly, it’s a surprise to me too. But I realize that I’m not able to be the mom and wife I want to be working 40 hours a week. I see now that I need to be home when Sara gets home from school. I know she’s 17 and she can drive and let

herself in the door – but my priority is to be home for her. Because I only have a-year-anda-half left before she leaves for college. So, I want to be home. And I need to be home. For her and for my husband. I didn’t know when I started this job how it would work – and how I would feel. But my priorities are mixed-up right now. I’m not spending the time needed on my most important priorities. So, I am seeking a change. And I am truly sorry that I am probably upsetting your expectation. I really hate that. But … my family comes first so I need to re-think my time. To undo and redo my schedule. Please know I respect your decision – whatever it is – after this conversation. But I was wondering if there’s any way this position could move to part time – instead of full-time – I know that it would work better for me. And my family.”

And do you know what my boss said (after the shock and surprise was gone and he had 24 hours to think it through)?

He said, “Yes.” Amazing but true.

That situation got me to thinking. No matter how hard and scary it might be – and no matter what you think you’ve got to lose – you’ve got to do the thing that sits well with your soul. And with

the people that you love the most. Because at the end of the day, all you’ve got to spend on your family is your time. The other stuff you buy them – all that glitzy Christmas stuff? It won’t matter in the long run. It probably doesn’t even mean much now.

And it made me realize the best resolutions we make are not the dreamy, pie-inthe-sky resolutions that we never end up keeping; rather, they are the problems that startle us unexpectedly and challenge our priorities.

So my New Year’s Resolution is simply to put the people I love first. To spend time on them. It is the one resolution I’m likely to love keeping.

ast week, I got a letter in the mail from a weight loss company. I don’t want to say which one exactly, so let’s just call them “Schweight Schwatchers.” The letter talked about taking care of your health in the New Year, or something ridiculous like that, and on the top of the page was a huge, blue headline that screamed, “We Want You Back!”

“Well, okay,” I thought, while I shoved a cream cheese-covered bagel in my mouth with one hand and held the letter in the other. “But was I ever there in the first place?”

A few minutes later, as I washed down my morning kolaches with a jug of half-and-half, I remembered: “Yes, I did, in fact, join Schweight Schwatchers once!” It was two-or-three years ago, and I signed up for a free, one-week trial after a rather naughty weekend I spent in a downtown hotel room with a case of Girl Scout cookies.

Only, if memory served, the free trial didn’t go so well because I blew all of the points I was allotted for the entire week in a single day by inhaling a box of Krispy Kremes and a pitcher of

margaritas. (Although, in all fairness, I actually did lose weight that week because I had a raging stomachache for the next six days and could only eat peanut butter and watermelon slices while sprawled on the couch. Which I think might actually be the South Beach Diet.)

Because the letter’s message about eating healthy intrigued me, I put it in my purse and carried it around with me all day. At lunchtime, I pulled it out while I went through the McDonald’s drive-thru and reread it as I demolished a big bag of trans fat and sodium. At dinner, I laid it on the table and tried to not get any deep-dish pizza grease or chocolate milkshake on it. But by the time my French pastry dessert cart rolled around, I was even more confused.

“Why is Schweight Schwatchers after me now?” I wondered, as I put in an exercise DVD and sat in the recliner to watch it while gobbling popcorn. Is it because when I recently vacationed in Hawaii, I only ate pork with a side of pork? Is it because whenever we drive past my gym, my husband says, “Someday you

But all that said, how exactly did Schweight Schwatchers know that I need to come back? I mean, they have no idea if I’m a size 6 or a size 16, right? So did they enlist spies to obtain undercover videotape of me ordering the Fatass Enchilada Plate at Rosie’s Tamale House? Or maybe they’ve been secretly monitoring my grocery store purchases. Or maybe, and this is even more disturbing, this was some kind of Cellulite

Intervention! Maybe someone turned me in after seeing me try to pull off the jodhpur look last fall. Or after watching me get stuck in one of those tiny, medieval chairs in the kindergarten room. OMG, does Schweight Schwatchers have a 1-800-Fat-Stoppers hotline for informants?

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that the reason Schweight Schwatchers contacted me was probably just because they had me on their mailing list.

They can’t actually see me, so they don’t know that I’m in good shape or that, all kidding aside, I actually eat a healthy, low-fat diet most of the time. No, they just assumed that I want to lose weight because every

single woman in America in the month of January wants to lose weight. At least the ones in my Brie-of-the-Month club do.

I looked at the letter a few more times while enjoying my before-bedtime snack of Pinot Grigio and fettuccine alfredo, and then finally put it in the recycling bin. While I appreciated the message Schweight Schwatchers was selling, and would maybe take them up on their oh-so-flattering suggestion to rejoin them at some point in the future, today wasn’t going to be that day.

Nope. No way.

t’s 2011 and I want to send Happy New Year wishes to all my readers and their pets! And now it’s time to get down to business. For me, that means a few resolutions. This year’s top two include spending more time with my family (pets included) and getting in great shape through an improved diet and steady exercise. Very original, I know. But I often wonder what my pets’ resolutions might be? I’d be willing to bet the house they’d eat more and sleep more if they could. But that ain’t gonna happen, and besides, do pets even know there’s a calendar year? Makes one wonder.

So what are your resolutions? With our busy lives, sometimes it’s hard to motivate ourselves to both work out and spend enriching, meaningful time with our dogs who, in some cases, can lead very sedentary existences. Sadly, this is the number one contributing factor to canine obesity and several other health and behavioral problems. (They’re just like us!) They need to move around and get that blood flowing. And just as it does for humans, exercise is as basic as it gets to improving the quality and length of pets’ lives. FitDog Austin is run by Vickie Menchhofer who brings over 23 years of experience in exercise instruction. She’s a certified group fitness instructor and personal trainer. At her FitDog bootcamp classes, Vickie and her dog Lexi make sure that you and your doggie fit in, get fit and have a fun, high-energy workout. You also get the uber-cool bonus that you and your dog get to work as a team throughout the class! Not only do you get a real workout, you and your pet experience an altogether different kind of challenge.

Menchhofer started this program with the stated mission of, “Increasing the wellness of people and their dogs while enhancing the human-dog bond through education, fitness, and fun.” Structure varies from classto-class, but will always include a variety of exercises that alternate between cardio and muscular activities. In a typical class, you can expect aerobic exercises like walking, running or sprinting, which challenge the heart and lungs; agility and speed work, which are trained in different ways using cones, ladders and hurdles; muscular endurance with weights; and also functional training to improve tone and balance. You’ll increase body stability, core strength and flexibility – and learn stretches to help your dog. And, besides the physical part, a great added benefit is the connection you make with your pet, and the socialization that being in a program with other dogs allows for him or her.

Class sizes vary but would on average be a maximum of 10 human/dog teams. If it grows bigger, a second instructor will be added to the class. So attention to you and your furry mate is very personal. Anybody can attend classes anytime, all ages and fitness levels are welcome and modifications for exercises are shown so that levels from beginners to advanced will get a customized

workout. However, there are some requirements that everyone needs to follow. Your doggie needs to be older than four months and have all his or her shots current. She or he should be a well-behaved dog and know basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” “down,” “come” and, of course, be able to walk on a leash and wear a collar. You should also bring along treats and toys for rewards and water to keep your pup hydrated. It’s important to note that the class is not a dog training class.

Some tips will be offered, but the main focus will be getting you and your pet in shape. As for the human requirements, bring along some hand weights, a mat, a towel and a bottle of H20.

The first class is always free and Menchhofer holds classes at three different locations: Zilker Park, Bull Creek District Park and Brushy Creek Sports Park in Cedar Park.

Check the schedule so you won’t have trouble finding one that fits your needs. FitDog offers very affordable class packages too. If you purchase a one-class pass it will be $15, five classes for $70 and 10 classes for $130. If none of the locations or scheduled times work for you, Menchhofer can always come to meet you at a place of your choosing for a personal training session with your dog.

Menchhofer is also certified in canine massage, so after a long week of training, you can purchase a massage session for your dog for $40 and Vickie can provide dog body work in your home.

cranberry-orange granola ingredients: 2 1/2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats 1/3 cup chopped walnuts 1/4 cup slivered almonds 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/3 cup maple syrup 1/3 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar 1 tsp grated fresh orange rind 1/2 cup fresh orange juice 1 tsp vanilla extract 2/3 cup sweetened, dried cranberries (such as Craisins)

method: 1. Preheat oven to 300°.

2. Combine first 4 ingredients in a medium bowl.

3. Combine maple syrup and next three ingredients in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat about 3 minutes or until sugar is dissolved, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, and stir in vanilla.

4. Pour syrup mixture over oat mixture, stirring until oats are coated. Spread oat mixture evenly in a thin layer on a jelly-roll pan coated with cooking spray. Bake at 300° for 20 minutes; add cranberries, and stir gently. Bake an additional 40 minutes, stirring halfway through.

5. Remove from oven, and cool completely. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

To many people, the word budget is just another way of saying "you can't have it." But a budget actually is a way to get what you want, as long as you understand that financial choices must be made and you make those decisions wisely.

What Exactly is a Budget?

In its most basic form, a budget is an organized, systematic method to determine how much money you have coming in, how much money you have going out and how to reconcile the two.

But a budget is more than simply tracking financial transactions. It is an important tool to help you achieve a wide range of financial goals.

Your immediate goal should be to live within your means.

The Physique Transformation Program Is Helping Austin Get Fit + Achieve Goals Nicole Mendlik, former RevFit client-turned-trainer.

ustin is inarguably one of the most active cities in the country. From the trails of Lady Bird Lake to the roads of the Hill Country and everywhere in between, our passion for running, riding and living healthy is evident. Our city offers so much in the way of staying fit that there is something for everyone looking to stay in shape and set fitness goals. Even with these options, it is not uncommon to have trouble shedding that extra pound or feeling like there is not enough time to hit the trails because of other commitments.

Revelation Fitness (RevFit) identified these issues within the Austin community and set out to find the solution. Consisting of three specialized programs, RevFit brings personalized training to its clients, taking all of the guesswork out of training programs, diet and goal setting. Known as a Physique Transformation Program, RevFit now has roughly 10 trainers serving over

100 clients in Austin. RevFit was started by Mariah MacDonald, who was later joined by partner Jim Nettles.

“I had been doing weight training on my own and had been able to lose weight and gain muscle. However, I hit a wall before hitting my goal and needed that extra boost and knowledge, so I called Mariah,” stated Nicole Mendlik, former client turned RevFit trainer.

Jim met me on my lunch break for an orientation session, an hour-and-a-half meeting he does with all clients before they begin one of the three 12-week programs available. Here, he takes initial measurements and pictures, sitting down with the client to set their goals and go over the expectations of the program and their individual contract. Jim eagerly stated, “The goals are most important, and the more specific the better; they help form the partnership between the client and their trainer.”

Mariah and Jim refer to the goal-setting process as “ship burning,” a term coined from the film The Hunt for Red October. Mariah explained, “This simply means that once a client sets specific goals, such as the photo shoot RevFit provides for the client after their program is complete but books the day of their orientation, there is no turning back or retreating.” Along with goal-setting, trainers encourage clients to write weekly updates, either in the form of Facebook status updates, blog posts or even e-mails to a small group of friends, for feedback and to share their progress along the way.

This orientation program prepares each client for what is ahead. All of the programs are varied versions of the same key process: weekly updates and client-specific program tweaks with a personal trainer.

Clients love that after their program is complete, they really have the tools to keep going on their own. don’t meet with a trainer face-to-face. Trainers still provide weekly counseling and nutrition programs, personalized in-home workouts and cardio homework and weekly adjustments based on the client’s progress.

The second program option, On-Location Boot Camps, are great for those who want to participate in the program but prefer to work-out in groups. You and your friends, coworkers, spouse and other family members can sign-up together and have a trainer meet you at the location of your choice for group training sessions. This option still includes the personalized diet and nutrition programs, counseling, cardio homework and weekly adjustments, but allows for you to use and provide motivation to those participating with you. The final option is the In-Home Physique Transformation Program, which is perfect for solving the problem of not having enough time to go and work out. In this program option, a Master Trainer will come to your home or a location of your choosing three times a week for personalized training sessions, along with offering the nutrition counseling, cardio homework and weekly program tweaks.

When I asked Nicole to describe her time in the program, she explained it in this way: “Women are always looking for the fastest way to make their legs leaner, butt smaller and abs tighter. RevFit not only

trains and monitors your progress as you go, it teaches you and gives you the tools to continue your fit lifestyle long after your program is completed to stay lean and fit. If you compare three months to the years you gain on your life by doing the program, it is a quick fix, no-nonsense solution and lifestyle change for a leaner, healthier you.”

Jim touched on a lot of this sentiment during the orientation session. He said that they do sometimes have clients re-sign for boot camps, but clients love that after their program is complete they “really have the tools to keep going on their own.”

The partnership between trainer and client is where the diet, nutrition and training tools come from. Trainers have to know their clients’ calorie intake and output every week, which is calculated by the client everyday through their Calorie King account provided by RevFit. Trainers meet every Tuesday and once a client’s name is called out, their specific trainer must be able to relay all of the information for the week regarding calories and show a photo the client provides. This allows the trainers to make recommendations as a team for the weekly diet or training tweaks, bringing out trainers’ specific skills and specialties and allowing for collaboration that ultimately will benefit the client. If the client doesn’t take their weekly photo or track their calories as

instructed, their trainer can’t provide the changes weekly to help the client reach their goal. Therefore, all three of the programs rely on the partnership between trainer and client heavily.

As Revelation Fitness continues to expand, getting ready to open in Seattle, Dallas, Houston and Chicago, so will the number of accomplished goals across the country. , though a Midwesterner from Missouri, looks like lots of beautiful Texas blondes seen around Austin.

She’s leggy and striking with an easy air of quiet confidence that not every woman can carry off. One might be tempted to make stereotypical assumptions about her before getting to know her. Bets are they’d turn out to be dead wrong.

Barely 40, Rae is wise beyond her years. An experienced businesswoman with the soul of an artist and the depth of a person who understands that personal relationships are what feed and nourish us, Rae is loyal and effusive about the people in her life. “Without my family and the support that we give one another,” says Rae, while sipping champagne poolside on the roof deck of her newly acquired downtown condominium, boasting stunning Lady Bird Lake and downtown Austin views, “I don’t know that I could have reached this level of success.” She seems slightly uncomfortable even saying the word “success,” probably because she understands that the word is entirely subjective, and that one can be ‘successful’ in many different realms without having achieved financial wealth or recognition in the business community. “It’s because of the people, the relationships I have in my life, that I am here today. I didn’t do all of this alone.

I had a dream, I pursued it, but I had a lot of support and encouragement that allowed me the guts to get here.” “Here” is the CEO and creator of her own nationally recognized cosmetics line, Rae Cosmetics.

“My entire family has always supported me,” she reiterates. She has three siblings and both her parents – her mother a psychologist, her father a retired construction company owner – are still living and are active in helping addicted, troubled teens get their lives on track through guided wilderness and outdoor experiences. “We are very close and I have definitely always known that I am loved. That alone makes every decision easier.”

Nevertheless, Rae’s childhood, though secure, was not without struggle. She had a weight problem that she says made her shy and self-conscious. Even today, she admits she thinks too much about food. “I don’t eat cheese or fried foods. I gain weight really easily. Sometimes I still think of myself as fat. I realize it’s neurotic.” She emphasizes that in high school, she was known as a great artist, so she believes that having a talent and using it helped her get through those difficult years. “I had good friends, and no one in my family ever made fun of my weight. But still, it’s not easy being an overweight teenager. I was always petrified someone would make fun of me.”

Rae says she was so shy she could hardly talk to strangers or go on job interviews. She says that her sister, Cynde Whitson, was her savior. “When I got out of high school, she and I moved in together, and she basically taught me to slowly overcome my shyness.” But Rae admits to still feeling like that shy teenager sometimes. Cynde, who now lives in Houston, once did job interviews posing as her sister on the phone, or ordered pizza for her. “She couldn’t even do the simplest things, because she was so terrified of being made fun of. It was paralyzing,” remembers Whitson. When she went

away to college for a year in Arkansas, Rae’s shyness kept her away from the cafeteria entirely, and she dropped a lot of weight. “When guys started paying attention to her,” says Whitson, “and she began feeling better about herself, she became less inhibited. She’s still a little shy, but she’s overcome it, for the most part.” Whitson says that it was evident to the family that Rae was creatively talented even as a little girl. “She won awards for photography, for painting, for sewing and fashion design. It all started when she was just a little girl.” It was only a matter of time before Rae would recognize her gifts herself and begin believing she could use them.

Today, Rae has definitely found a way to overcome her self-consciousness in the business world, even in an industry that is wildly oversaturated. She began Rae Cosmetics with a $10,000 loan from her parents and $5,000 in savings.

She has no investors, so growth remains gradual but steady. She has employees who go onsite to do makeup for clients,

Though the company’s beginnings were humble, Rae’s drive made it grow because she saw the need and believed in it. “Getting the line started, I was working as a makeup artist on photo shoots and I’d have to redo makeup at least three or four times during a shoot because of the heat here in Austin. So I started playing with the makeup, adding water to thin it, noticing that if you use a thinner makeup, then you only have to put it on heavier in spots, to cover blemishes or blotches.

I realized I could maybe start making my own line. I went online and started looking for makeup manufacturers and I found one in New Jersey where they mix many cosmetic lines. So I went to visit and began to start working with chemists, telling them what I wanted them to do. I wanted my cosmetics to be fragrance-free, and most of them are also oil -free. Most of my line has SPF in it, and everything is designed to be

It should go on in the morning and last through the evening with only a few minor touch ups.” When asked the financial worth of her business today, Rae grins. “The business is priceless. We have quadrupled in size since the launch of our first products in August 2005.” She deserves to be a tiny bit glib, after all.

“Rae Cosmetics is different,” Rochelle Rae explains, when asked what sets her apart from the abundant competition.

“We make makeup for women who live in hot, humid climates. It’s not heavy, it doesn’t make you look ‘made-up,’ and it’s all cruelty-free.” Rae, in fact, has a pet rabbit named Baby that is also the company’s mascot, so to speak! “She travels with me and spends lots of time at Rae Studio. She’s litter box-trained and has never been in a cage,” she says with the look of a proud mother. Rae has no children of her own, but is very close to her four-year-old niece for whom she designs Halloween costumes every year. When asked about how she would advise young mothers to raise daughters who are unafraid to pursue their dreams, Rae’s shyness shows. “I’m not sure I’m the person to ask, since I have no children of my own. I suppose I would tell mothers to encourage their daughters to investigate their interests, to try to do many things, even if it’s scary. I’d say it’s important that they know that life is not always easy, that they have to work hard. We all fail, but it’s in how we cope with failure that matters. I don't think children should be protected from every little stumble. We learn from our mistakes and we find the strength to get through them.”

Spoken like someone who’s made a few mistakes along the way, Rae doesn’t seem preoccupied with any of the stumbles she’s experienced; rather she seems

It’s an expensive, difficult place to live when you’re just starting out. I learned a lot of lessons about survival there.” But coming to Austin, she says, was the perfect decision. “This town is so perfect for me. The cost of living is manageable, there’s water everywhere and places to be active all the time. In the Midwest, the way of living is a lot different and not as conducive to a healthy lifestyle.”

Her good friend Kim Gerlich attests to Rae’s tenacity and free, can-do spirit.

“We’ve been friends for 15 years now and from Day One, she has impressed me with her talent of turning a vision into reality. To this day, when I think back to women who have inspired me over the years, Rochelle is Number One!” Before she was married, Rae lived on Lake Austin and owned her own boat. (She is now on her fourth boat.

“They keep getting a little better and a little nicer,” says Rae, who recovered the seats herself in her first, used boat.) “She was the first woman I’d ever met who could fix her own boat when it broke down, sometimes with the boat full of girlfriends!” says Gerlich. She remembers Rae often having to stop a boating expedition to go up to her studio apartment on the lake and meet with a client.

“We’d all wait on the water while she’d have her meeting or make up a client for a photo shoot. Then she’d run back down and we’d go back out on the lake.”

Gerlich says that Rae’s work ethic is one-of-a-kind, as is evidenced by her company’s continued climb to success.

“Still, even with the success she’s achieved, Rochelle is humble and a good friend who can always be relied upon.” The storefront in central Austin’s 26 Doors is her headquarters, but her cosmetics are carried in 30 spas and boutiques around the country.

Rae’s husband, Zack Fuentes, also 40, remembers when they met and what drew him immediately to Rae, besides her stunning good looks and the fact that she taught him to wakeboard. “Part of what makes Rochelle so attractive is the fact that she is an extremely genuine and kind person. It’s immediately evident when you meet her. Friends, family and clients all benefit from her thoughtfulness,” he says, with a great deal of respect. But, for this busy couple (Fuentes is the midst of getting a tech startup off the ground), splitting time between work and marriage can be challenging. “Rochelle and I have the same type of schedule: busy. But separating our personal lives from our business lives is the key to spending real quality time together when the day is over. We realize that it's extremely important to be present when you’re with your spouse and not thinking about work.” Rae says that what keeps the marriage working is trust. “We do a lot of things separately because we work in different industries. Trust is key.”

with QA + Rochelle AW: Who is your favorite visual artist, and why?

Rochelle Rae: During a trip to Paris, I visited the Musée d'Orsay and saw works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. I was so amazed by his incredible use of color. He paints faces that looked perfectly normal from a distance, but on closer inspection, you realize they are swishes and blocks of green and blue or purple. He really understood how lighting affected the appearance of the skin and painted what he actually saw, not what he was supposed to see or thought he saw.

AW: How much time now do you spend on your painting?

RR: I am really so busy with Rae there has been no time for painting. I hope to start committing time to painting again someday soon.

AW: How important do you think it is for women to find their creative passions and express them?

RR: It is so very important for everyone to have a passion. How empty life would be if we didn’t feel passionately about a person, purpose or craft. I feel passionate about so many things. It makes me happy and I feel like I have a purpose. If you do what you love, it’s so much easier to love life.

AW: What do you like to do on a Saturday night in Austin?

RR: Most of my Saturday nights are pretty quiet. Saturdays are busy at Rae Cosmetics, so dinner and wine is a perfect ending to a crazy day. When I do go out, I usually meet a friend or two for dinner and go listen to a band. I love going to fashion shows and to the ballet. If I lived in New York, I think I would see a Broadway play once a week.

AW: If you could travel anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would you go, and why RR: I want to go everywhere and see everything. I am a true lover of the beach and warm weather, so I’d really like to go to Bali. I’ve heard it referred to as the “Ultimate Island.” I had a philosophy teacher in college that lived in Bali who was a wonderful storyteller. Those stories stayed with me.

AW: If you could give one piece of advice to women wanting to start their own product sales company what would that advice be?

RR: Listen. In Austin, entrepreneurship is really encouraged here. There are so many successful business people here willing to give advice and help. Listen to their advice and learn from their accomplishments and failures. Find a mentor.

AW: If you were only allowed to leave the house with one item of makeup to take you through the day, what would it be?

RR: Lip gloss. I, of course, wear Rae Cosmetics, so everything else stays on great all day.

AW: What makeup tip do you have to take a woman from a long, busy and active day into the evening without having to start over?

RR: Wear Rae Cosmetics, specifically designed to stay on all day. If you want to go a bit more dramatic for the evening, go a little thicker with your eyeliner and darken your eye shadow for a more smoky look. Throwing on some red lipstick is the easiest way to glam it up for the evening.

AW: What is your worst trait?

alking into the Round Rock Area Serving Center is like walking into a small town. Rows of people sit in chairs waiting to shop for food in the food pantry.

People swarm the racks of clothes in Treasures, the thrift store, and poke their way around the piles in the Furniture Store. Behind all this, hundreds of volunteers sort, price, hang and deliver the goods to help the less fortunate. And that’s just the first floor.

The most amazing truth about this multifaceted organization is how efficiently and smoothly it all runs. One major factor in this success is Executive Director Lori Scott.

Scott has served as the director of the Serving Center for 10 years. Her commitment to this organization and her abilities as a leader, are only a few of the reasons why Scott is our inaugural “WOW” woman.

Scott loves Round Rock, and is as involved in her community as one person can be. She is currently a member of 14 organizations, with leadership roles in most of them. She is on the board of directors for the Round Rock Chamber of Commerce, St. David’s Medical Center and Women Impacting the Nation.

She does all that and makes time to be a wife and mother. She has been married to her husband Mike for 32 years, and her three children: Greg, 25, Allyson, 24, and Libby, 22, all attend Texas A&M University.

• When she commits to something, she commits. Scott served as president of the Round Rock Rotary Club, and was inducted into the Rotary Roll of Fame. Rotary clubs meet weekly, and she has nine years of perfect attendance.

• She is a girly tomboy. Scott is not afraid of hard or dirty work. She loves sports, especially college football and baseball. On the other hand, she worked in retail management for several years, and has a thing for shoes. “Last time I counted,” Scott said, “I had over 50 pairs of shoes in my closet (that I wear, of course!).”

The Serving Center provides a food pantry, Round Rock Coats for Kids, clothing and furniture vouchers, Computers for Kids, community gardens, The Volunteer Center, adult computer classes in English and Spanish and financial assistance. They also run Treasures, a clothing and furniture thrift store open to the public.

• They help a lot of people. More than 55,000 people receive assistance from the Serving Center each year. Every morning the serving center doors open at 7:30 a.m. Even though the pantry doesn’t open until 10 a.m., people pour in and wait in the lobby to escape the weather.

• You can help. Donations of clothing, furniture, books and appliances are always needed. The center is a huge operation, with only four employees. This means the vast majority of the work done is by volunteers. No matter what your area of expertise, there is a capacity for you to serve. The Serving Center needs receptionists, interviewers, pantry volunteers, cashiers and people to sort and price merchandise. Volunteers are also needed to sort food donations, pick up food donations, tend gardens, restock pantry shelves, drive the truck, pick up furniture, unload trucks and enter data. You’re Never Too Old to Get Your Groove On Co-Eds and Grandmas Alike Enjoy Good Sex

oes anyone remember the 1980’s sitcom, The Golden Girls? That show was hilarious! While each of the actresses was a comedic genius in her own right, Rue McClanahan’s portrayal of the oversexed Blanche was often sidesplitting. Blanche would “take on” anything in trousers and saw herself as an irresistible sex kitten. She was an interesting character given that the characters in the show were all past middle age and Sophia, played by Estelle Getty, was a senior citizen. The show addressed many issues regarding women’s sexuality that were groundbreaking for the time, such as Blanche’s insatiable sexual appetite and sexual persona despite being a “mature” woman, sex after menopause, the death of a spouse and/or partner during or immediately after intercourse and lesbian

attraction and lesbian relationships in mature women. The really great thing about The Golden Girls is that it showed that women of all ages, even mature women, still have a healthy appreciation for and still like to engage in sexual activity.

A common misconception is that older people, especially older women, are no longer interested in having sex or being sexual.

Nothing could be further from the truth!

Numerous studies have shown that older women, some well into their 80’s, are still interested in, and engaging in regular sexual intercourse. Cindy Meston, PhD, is a professor of clinical psychology at The University of Texas at Austin and has extensively studied human sexuality and women’s sexuality in particular. In 2007, she and David Buss, PhD, published Why Humans Have Sex

(Meston CM, Buss DM. Archives of Sexual Behavior 2007; 36:477–507) This served as the starting point for their subsequent book, Why Women Have Sex: Understanding Sexual Motivations from Adventure to Revenge (and Everything in Between) published in 2009.

From her work, Meston has found that women engage in sex for a variety of reasons, ranging from pure physical release, to try a new technique, for the pure fun of it, to show love for one’s partner and, in a small percentage of women, to position themselves for a raise or promotion. Anything that is calming or relaxing is an aphrodisiac and can be a precursor to foreplay.

older women, women aged 31 - 45 (and likely beyond) engage in sex for a wider variety of reasons than do younger women, perhaps owing to more life experiences from which to draw. While Meston and her colleagues have yet to do a long-term study focusing on how the frequency of sex changes during a woman’s life and how major life events impact a woman’s sex life, one thing is for sure, women of all ages like sex, engage in sex and enjoy sex.

Kyle Stephenson, MA, is a sex therapist and PhD candidate at The University of Texas at Austin. His primary area of study is women’s sexual satisfaction and his most recent study, When Are Sexual Difficulties Distressing for Women? The Selective, Protective Value of Intimate Relationships, (© 2010 International Society for Sexual Medicine, Journal of Sexual Medicine) shows that while many women may experience waning sexual desire, not all women are distressed about their situation. In his research, older women are more likely to experience higher rates of sexual dysfunction, but younger women are more likely to be distressed by any sort of dysfunction or waning sexual desire. Some researchers have found that multiple sexual problems, depression and partner sexual dysfunction are major factors contributing to female sexual distress. However, Stephenson notes that the quality of a women’s intimate relationship plays a key factor in whether or not waning desire, especially if it arises as a result of sexual dysfunction, creates distress for women. If a woman is in a stable intimate relationship, she is less likely to be distressed by her sexual dysfunction or waning sexual desire than if she is in a less intimate relationship. Since older women

are more likely to be in stable intimate relationships, older women are less likely to be distressed by their desire or dysfunction issues.

Intimacy is a major contributing factor to sexual satisfaction in women of all ages.

Pat Love, EdD and author of Hot Monogamy has found that there are nine areas that need to be fulfilled in women in order for them to experience “great sex.” Love also says that women who experience great sex have the ability to focus on the present moment.

“The Amygdala, the information processing areas of the brain, must be calm and stressfree in women. Women who are unable to ‘turn off’ their thoughts (about the laundry, the dog, etc...) and focus on what’s going on in the moment are less likely to be aroused and hence less likely to enjoy the sexual encounter.

Love says that a major factor in female sexual satisfaction is a woman’s perception of her body. Women with low body images tend to have low desire, low arousal and a low sexual satisfaction. According to Love, it doesn’t matter how much a woman’s partner tells her that he desires her and finds her attractive, it’s how a woman feels about herself that really counts and influences her sexual response. When it comes to body image, older women tend to be more comfortable with their bodies than younger women.

They have made their peace with how their bodies look and have changed and in the context of a long-term, stable relationship, are more comfortable “in their own skin.”

Women like sex and women enjoy engaging in sexual activities. What has happened is that “good sex” has been defined

by the accepted male standards as external beauty, genital contact/arousal and orgasm. As Love notes, “For women, sex is not all about the genitals. Women want and have a right to expect kindness, support and to feel good during and after a sexual encounter.” As judged by these parameters, one must wonder if many of the women diagnosed with hypoactive sexual desire disorder actually have a sexual disorder or are they just dissatisfied with their current sexual situations as a result of a lack of desire for “the same old thing?”

There is still much to learn about women’s sexuality. Unfortunately, research on women’s sexuality is still mostly focused on women’s sexual dysfunction, not on what women want and what gives them pleasure.

Currently, funding for research in women’s sexual pleasure is limited and is not funded at all by the National Institutes of Mental Health. It is seen as too controversial and in some circles, not an intellectual topic worthy of conversation.

But it is erroneous to believe that women don’t like sex or don’t enjoy sexual encounters. As defined by the male paradigms of external beauty, genital contact and orgasm as the final marker of a successful sexual encounter, many women aren’t interested in sex for just sex’s sake. They have no desire to engage in sex that leaves them feeling ugly and/or unfulfilled. When women are relaxed, content within the home of their own skin, are focused on the moment and enjoying connection, intimacy, romance and the sensations of their own bodies and that of their partners, then sex for women of all ages is very pleasurable and they desire to engage in sexual activity repeatedly.

Customize decorations to suit your theme. Decorations set the mood for any party. Here, we’ve used a frosty blue and white snowflake motif, warmed with cocoa-colored accents, woolly scarves, hats and gloves. Use a dramatic centerpiece to add visual interest to your hot chocolate bar. This centerpiece is made using a glass vase wrapped with shimmering scrapbook paper and filled with decorative silver and blue sprigs, which you can buy at your local craft store.

The snowflakes hanging from the branches are frame ornaments, displaying designs and phrases from the printables collection. More snowflakes, cut from cardstock, are hung on the backdrop, adding greater height to the centerpiece. Stacked cups on either side of the table help to balance the tablescape. We also added a touch of whimsy to the table by repurposing a woolly scarf as a table runner.

Set up a hot chocolate tasting bar. Let the hot chocolate tasting bar act as the focal point for your party. Each guest can create his or her own perfect cup of hot chocolate, using a variety of gourmet cocoa mixes, hot water and milk. You could use flavors like Vanilla, S’mores, Peppermint and White Chocolate.

Yum! But don’t stop there; provide plenty of toppings, so that each cup is a truly custom creation. Whipped cream and marshmallows are a must, but go a step further and set up a mixing station with toppings such as peppermint chips, crushed Heath toffee bar, milk/dark/white chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, chocolate shavings, crushed butterscotch and peanut brittle (shown to right). Thai food is generally healthy, with recipes using lots of vegetables, little oil and lean meats. Austin’s Jam Sanitchat has taken it a step further, using mostly local, organic and sustainable ingredients at her cute, South Austin shop.

A

lthough she didn’t know it right away, food and cooking were in Jam Sanitchat’s cards from the very beginning. As a 5-year-old, the Bangkok native followed her grandmother around in the kitchen, paying attention, picking up an interest, and soaking up knowledge as she went. The smart young lady excelled at school and graduated from Chulalongkorn University in 1994, getting a job as an editor at an English language magazine. With her entrepreneurial spirit on the rise, she started her own business as a publisher, and eventually decided to continue her studies abroad. She arrived in Austin in 2001 as a graduate student, obtaining her Master’s Degree in communications from UT in 2003. She was to head to the East Coast to pursue a PhD at Rutgers, but life had other plans for her.

To make ends meet, while waiting to leave, she summoned her memories and experience from her days in her grandmother’s kitchen. After a few recipe-filled phone conversations with her mother, she started offering cooking classes in her own kitchen and at people's homes under the name “Thai Cooking with Jam.” It was during this time that she met Bruce Barnes, then the manager at Hoover's Cooking. She fell in love with Barnes and with cooking and she stayed in Austin.

All of a sudden, she needed a new plan. She started a stand at the Sunset Valley Farmers' Market to promote her cooking classes, her catering services and her delicious food. It was here that the whole notion of “eating local” clicked. “In Thailand, because the season is so long, there is no such thing as “local” or “seasonal” ingredients. You find everything at the markets, yearround. I just didn’t understand what was meant [by] ‘eating local.’” After a hiatus in which their son Leo was born, Jam returned to work at the Austin Farmers' Market downtown and at the Triangle. But with Bruce's experience in the restaurant business and Jam's growing passion for cooking, the next step seemed to be a no-brainer– in a small but ideal

space in Bouldin Creek, the couple opened Thai Fresh in August 2008, offering freshly made meals, Thai groceries and her cooking classes, which by this point had a loyal following.

“At the markets, I met all these farmers and their produce and meats were so fresh, I just wanted to use it in my cooking, but many of these ingredients are not traditionally used in Thai cuisine.” At the same time, she started paying attention to the geograp-hy of the State of Texas, and of the country as a whole, and realized that the meaning and need for shopping locally makes sense in every way.

“Everything is fresher, and therefore healthier,” she explains. So, rather than spending the extra money on expensive specialty produce, she began buying organic products from her friends at the farmers’ markets. “I started substituting local broccoli and cauliflower in dishes where we would normally use Chinese broccoli, for example. People don’t realize that Chinese broccoli is in the same family as collard greens, which are popular in Texas and plentiful at the markets. Right now, we are using a lot of sweet potatoes because they are in season. They are great in our curries. I like experimenting with local ingredients and adapting them to fit into my Thai recipes,” she says. For example, bison and

lamb are not traditional Thai ingredients, but Jam has adapted them very well to a number of her dishes. She uses the same approach in her cooking classes, encouraging her students to think outside the recipe and substitute what’s available. “The farmers’ markets are a great influence and inspiration for local ingredient adaptation,” she says. Jam and Bruce are also gardeners, and every season something they grow is featured at the restaurant. “Last summer we had piles of cucumbers,” she says. “We made lots of cucumber salad, and Thai pickles, which are very traditional. We eat them with steamed rice topped with chicken, for breakfast. We also had enough tomatoes that we didn’t have to buy from outside sources.” She grows herbs like lemongrass, Thai basil, Thai lime leaves, cilantro and even galangal, all used at the restaurant. Between what they grow and what she finds at the market, very few things at Thai Fresh come from conventional grocery stores or purveyors.

When the building next door became available last year, Thai Fresh expanded. They now have more grocery shelves, a large selection of teas, home baked pastries, and plenty more seating. Jam plans to add wine pairings to her cooking classes, now that she can accommodate more students. She also started

experimenting with ice cream making, using classic techniques and adapting local, seasonal produce and Asian ingredients. Her coconutfresh corn ice cream is wildly popular; other flavors include Meyer lemon, Thai basil, peach, and fig. Many are dairy-free, made using coconut milk as a base rather than cream.

This year will bring more exciting additions at Thai Fresh. “We plan on having a recipe station, where people can pick up a recipe and shop for the ingredients right here. We will have “ready-to-cook” dishes to go. Everything will be prepped, chopped and portioned, ready to take home and cook. We’ll also have readymade sauces, like for pad Thai and pad see ew,” she says. These will also be available at the Downtown Farmers’ Market stand, where Jam dishes up traditional Thai street breakfast food, like rice soup and fried chicken on rice on Saturday mornings.

Although purists may not consider Thai Fresh “authentic,” the food is made in Thaistyle, using lots of flavorful spices and the freshest meats and vegetables available; it is delicious, healthy and affordable. Best of all, it is local in every possible way.

Pad See Ew Noodles are "good luck" food for the New Year.

Jam says: "In Chinese tradition, the long noodles represent long and prosperous lives. When you eat the noodles, you are supposed to eat the whole length without cutting. Traditionally, we use Chinese broccoli in this dish. You can also use bok choy, regular broccoli, cauliflower or carrots. I have used collard greens, too, and they are great. Shop at your local farmers’ market and experience with different greens and vegetables."

1 lb. wide or thin (vermicelli) rice noodles 1/2 lb. bite size chicken/pork/beef/tofu 2-4 tsp. light soy sauce 6 stalks Chinese broccoli, (4-5 cups cut up) 3-4 Tbsp. vegetable oil 6 cloves chopped garlic 2-3 Tbsp black soy sauce or dark soy

sauce or thick soy sauce 2-3 tsp. sugar, to taste 3 large eggs, warmed to room temperature 1/4 tsp. ground white pepper Pickled chilies (sliced Serrano or jalapeno peppers pickled in white vinegar)

Soak flat rice noodles for about an hour or vermicelli for about half an hour. Cut Chinese broccoli into two-to-three inches long. Cut stems by slicing on the bias so that stems will cook evenly. Heat oil in a deep pan or a wok. Sauté the chopped garlic in the oil for a few seconds until fragrant, then add the chicken or pork. Stir until the meat is cooked, toss in the noodles along with black soy sauce and light soy sauce. Stir and spread out over heated surface of the wok.

Sauté and flip the noodles a few more minutes and then add the vegetables. Stir and spread mixture over the surface and allow pan-frying for a minute, keep folding in vegetables. Sprinkle with some sugar. Stir and mix well. Push the noodles up along the sides of the wok to make an empty space on the side or make a well in the middle. Crack in the egg and scramble lightly until eggs are mostly cooked. When the eggs are cooked through, break into smaller chunks and toss in with noodles. Sprinkle with white pepper and toss. Transfer to a serving dish and serve warm with a pickled chili sauce and dried Thai chilies. Enjoy!

Coconut soup w/ chicken Serves 4 2 cups water or chicken/ vegetable stock 2 cups coconut milk 1 tbsp fish sauce 1 tsp palm sugar (any brand) 2 stalks lemongrass 2 red shallots 4 Thai chilies 8 slices galangal

3 kaffir lime leaves 5 oz oyster mushroom/ artichoke hearts/hearts of palm/banana blossom 8 oz chicken, tofu, shrimp or salmon Fish sauce to taste 3 tbsp lime juices 1 tbsp coriander leaves

In a pot, combine stock with coconut milk. Bring to boil. Bruise lemongrass, shallots and two Thai chilies using mortar and pestle. Add along with galangal and lime leaves to boiling stock. Simmer for a few minutes, and then add chicken and mushroom, turn down the heat and continue to simmer until chicken is cooked. Season with fish sauce and sugar. In a serving bowl, mix fish sauce, lime juice, the rest of Thai chilies (minced) and coriander. Ladle in the soup, stir and check seasoning. It should be rich, salty, sour and hot.

In the past, south-of-the-river dwellers were often hard-pressed to find a cozy place to enjoy a glass of good quality wine. Fret no more, South Austin! We found three lovely spaces that have filled that niche just fine.

The Lounge at Aviary After discovering a similar concept while living in New York, Shanna Eldridge and husband Marco Fiorilo imagined owning a store where customers could browse through an eclectic selection of home décor and local art and “test drive” the furniture while drinking a glass of wine or a beer. The dream came true a year ago, when they finally were able to add a lounge to their oh-so-cool South Lamar store, Aviary.

“Every item our customers use is for sale,” says Eldridge, who has been obsessed with home décor since childhood. “I used to change my room all the time, it drove my mom crazy.” Now, she has a store to play with, although she still finds the time to change the colors of her home’s walls periodically. At the Lounge at Aviary, if you fall in love with the glass you are using, you can walk out with a new set of them.

All chairs, loungers, tables, pillows, and lamps are for sale; customers are encouraged to sit on the furniture in the gallery, on the patio, or at the bar, enjoy a fine beverage and relax. “Of course we don’t sell that specific piece of furniture,” Eldridge explains. “We have more in the warehouse, or we can custom order for you.”

Behind the bar, the living room style setting with a comfy rug, bean bags and banquettes, invites a pause to sip something tasty while catching some of the couples’ favorite TV shows on the big screen. Aside from an ever-changing selection of unique wines, beers and nightly specials – husband Marco changes the list as often as she changes the décor- you can enjoy a plate of cheeses from Houston’s Polla or charcuterie selections from Buda’s Salt & Time. The 30-second ads featuring Conrad’s voice are airing this fall on nationally and regionally televised football games. The airtime is provided to participating universities free of charge. The ads also will be featured at sporting events on the University campus.

Conrad, who lives in New York City, said the key message she hopes to convey to the many varied audiences hearing the ads is that “anyone who wants to excel in anything will find that opportunity at The University of Texas at Austin, and I’m proud of that.”

She said her feelings about the University have been “a journey” that has taken her from having a lack of interest in her alma mater to feeling extremely proud with a sense of belonging to a university that is “helping to make a difference in the world.”

“This is the meaning of ‘Hook’em Horns,’” Conrad said. “To win over people’s hearts and thoughts and minds and transport them to bigger dreams and bigger places. That’s how I translate ‘Hook’em Horns.’”

Conrad has been one of the world’s most celebrated mezzo-sopranos over a long and distinguished career. A 1959 graduate of the

University, she was at the center of a national civil rights controversy in 1957 when she was removed from the lead role in the opera Dido and Aeneas because she was cast opposite a white student who was the male lead. Conrad’s life is chronicled in the documentary When I Rise: The Story of Barbara Smith Conrad, produced by the University’s Dolph Briscoe Center for American History.

Conrad said her emotional journey in her feelings about the University was a long road that required her to “confront those demons that haunted us.” “I had to confront racism, it’s lethal and horrible, but we found ourselves wanting the best for everyone at the end of the day,” Conrad said. She said she thanks God for the other Texas Exes who, many years ago, extended a welcoming hand and said, “Come along, Barbara, join us.”

Through the years, her relationship with University has strengthened. The Texas ExStudents’ Association named her a Distinguished Alumnus in 1985, and the University has honored her with the founding of the Barbara Smith Conrad Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Fine Arts.

Conrad said her visits to the University have taught her there are “great minds wandering around that university” and she feels fortunate to have met some “great people, great thinkers, people completely dedicated to raising the standards for all people.”

She said it is brilliant professors such as these who have made The University of Texas

at Austin “among the finest” institutions in the country.

“If you are dreaming to become someone of consequence, whether a nurse, doctor, or lawyer, you have a chance at a school like that,” Conrad said. “One thing I’ve learned is that everyone works very hard at that university to make it an inspiring institution.“ Four of the new broadcast spots promoting the University extend a tone and concept introduced eight years ago in ads that featured the voice of the late Walter Cronkite, legendary broadcast journalist and university alumnus. Cronkite died in July 2009 at the age of 92. A fifth ad highlights the University’s “Hook‘em Horns” rallying cry. The images in the “Hook‘em” ad were collected from Longhorns around the world who were engaged in the project through social media. All of the ads close with Conrad proclaiming the university’s well-known and celebrated motto, “What Starts Here Changes the World.”

“Our previous ads focused on the university and its relationship to the creative community of Austin,” said Don Hale, vice president for public affairs. “Most of the new ads bring the viewer right to the University and display the beauty of the campus. Barbara Conrad’s voice lends a new style and class to these spots.”

The ads were produced by the offices of Public Affairs and Development. Original music was created by the Austin-based firm Tequila Mockingbird.
