RODEO NEWS

END OF SEASON STANDINGS

As another competition season draws to a close, on behalf of the Competition Board I would like to congratulate all the cowboys and cowgirls who have secured Pro Tour Wins and NFR qualifications. We have seen a phenomenal increase in the amount of money won right across the board in every event, and qualifying for the NFR has proven tougher than ever before.
The association has seen over $3million paid out in prize money and numerous members break season earnings records across the Open Pro Tour and Rookie Titles. Congratulations to all of those cowboys and cowgirls! The increasing money on offer for our members to compete for is incredible and I think we can all agree, that it’s exciting to think about where it’s heading in the future.
A key focus of the Competition Board this year has been judging and revamping the association’s approach to our processes around educating and approving judges, new and existing. At Cloncurry rodeo we launched our Judge’s Clinic course, and we thank all the members who took the time to attend. Furthermore, we have recently added the course content to our website for everybody to easily access.
It is our plan to hold a clinic in each circuit, with clinics already tentatively booked for Wangaratta, Tumbarumba, and Kapunda. Any member is welcome to attend a clinic, and we encourage you to do so even if you do not wish to pursue the judging path. It is a great opportunity to learn and refresh the rules of your event/s and gain an insight and appreciation into what is expected of judges.
Finally, I would like to thank the entire Competition Board for the work they have done this season, their dedication to the sport of rodeo and for making my life easier as chairman.
Spring time! My favourite part of the year in Warwick – storms (hopefully), Warwick Cup, roses and of course the Warwick Rodeo!!
We are winding down to the final rodeo of the season with Tibooburra holding an Extreme Broncs event this weekend completing a busy year for competitors, affiliates, and APRA.
NFR is fast approaching with Qualifiers being contacted and spots confirmed. Thank you to Jill Lyons and the NFR committee who have put in a mammoth effort to get the event up and running!
Memberships are due this month and renewals can be paid via direct debit into our account, by card on contacting the office or cheque in the mail. Memberships will need to be current to enter events in October. If you are paying by Direct Debit, please use your membership number and name as a reference so we know which member is paying. If your contact details and bank details have changed, please fill out a new membership form – these can be found on the website www.prorodeo.com.au under the APRA INFO tab APRA MEMBERSHIP.
The AGM is set to be held Thursday 26th October at 8am at the Douglas Feez Pavilion, Warwick Showgrounds. Everyone is welcome to attend the AGM, but only financial members may vote on the day. If you are unable to make it, you can vote via proxy form, and we will also be livestreaming on the day. The AGM is about members, so please contribute any way you can. We have an Executive Director’s position vacant, and several Event Directors up for election.
Bring on 2023-2024 Season, all the best to our competitors, affiliates and as always, we are here in the office for any questions you have.
Clinics are free and all members are welcome and encouraged to attend a clinic! Improve your knowledge, gain a better understanding of the rules and get an insight into what is expected of our rodeo judges You are not required to go on and become an approved judge
A clinic involves a comprehensive course covering the rule book, judging practices and the expectations of a judge. It aims to be informative, easily understood and to provide an insight into the role of a rodeo judge
3
A judging test involves questions and scenarios based around the APRA rulebook Questions relate to each of the individual events, animal welfare and general judging obligations.
Once you have attended a clinic, sat and passed a judging test you need to complete a judging application form and it will be submitted to the Competition Board for approval.
Judging clinics are being planned for each circuit and formal details will be advertised once they are finalised. If you are interested in a clinic being held in your area or would like to register to attend a clinic, please contact the APRA Office

45.29 A tractor drag of the arena surface must be done at the commencement, completion and after a maximum of 10 Competitors (or less) in both the slack and performance Ie; if there are 24 competitors drawn in the slack and 10 in the performance then a tractor drag must occur after 10 competitors (or less) in the slack and vice versa. This is the responsibility of the committee or stock contractor. If a tractor is unavailable then a similarly suitable implement is acceptable

A tractor drag of the arena surface must be done at the commencement, completion and after a maximum of 7 Competitors (or less) in both the slack and performance Ie; if there are 24 competitors drawn in the slack and 7 in the performance then a tractor drag must occur after 7 competitors (or less) in the slack and vice versa. This is the responsibility of the committee or stock contractor. If a tractor is unavailable then a similarly suitable implement is acceptable.
Reason: Due to animal welfare issues with some arena’s being unsuitable to hold up to a maximum of 10 competitors prior to a rake, and either judges or event directors having to make a call at short notice to lessen the amount, a figure of 7 competitors will take out the potential backlash on officials to set up in favour of individuals Due to the popularity of the barrel race with the crowd, this could potentially encourage committees or promoters to add more competitors in the performance rounds (for example if they add 14 to a performance then only one rake prior to this round and one rake after 7 is required).

Add Novice Barrel race rules; Entries and payment to head office via central entries
A Novice Barrel Horse declaration to be filled in and received upon entering Must be paid out as per APRA prizemoney rules therefore no divisional payouts.
A Novice Barrel race or additional Junior age group barrel races are not to be approved at Limited Event Rodeos If a promoter or committee runs a novice without notification on affiliation form, insurance for this event will not apply. Overlap of other affiliates for a Novice barrel race are not to run on the same day or complex as an APRA event. The horse can win a total of 3 novice barrel races with the APRA This horse must not have won an Open Barrel Race or 17 and Under Junior barrel race at any other recognized rodeo association. Entry fee to be set with APRA administration levy of $22.00 in mind ($13.20 insurance for all competitor and $8.80 central entry fee)
One run per rider/horse combination. Limit of two runs per rider. Novice barrel racing must not be run on the Junior or Open course. Ideally it will be run on completion of rodeo however if it is conducted prior to start of rodeo a complete repack and leveling of surface must take place to ensure there is no evidence of ruts or tracks that may interfere with the rodeo barrel racing. Overlap of other affiliates for a Novice barrel race are not to run on the same day or complex as an APRA event.
Reason: The APRA needs control over how the Novice Barrel Race is ran from both a financial benefit to the association through administration levies and from an insurance point of view to ensure the novice is ran on the same basis as the Open and Junior sanctioned events.

Reason: There is already a rule that the Junior Barrel race is not to be run on the same course as the open course if this open event has not been completed This is to ensure the ground has the best chance to stay consistent between rounds and all the way through to the end of the Open event. Although Novice barrel racing is popular and encouraging to both new and existing members we need to be mindful that ground conditions for the rodeo barrel racing has to be at it’s best for the safety and effectiveness of a professional level competition

Rodeo is going out back, way out to the Back O’ Bourke. The APRA rodeo set for Oct 14th is not the first rodeo to grace the rural NSW township, but it is the first rodeo in a long time. 23 years to the day in fact. And this time around, it’s in honour of a highly respected local and former saddle bronc rider Peter Simmonds.
Peter was one of the main organisers of the original stampede and in recent years had the idea, along with his brother Greg, to start the ball rolling on once again bringing rodeo back to Bourke. Early in 2022, in the midst of that idea, the Simmonds family lost Peter to cancer. They decided to step up and keep that ball rolling in honour of him. And, while weather wreaked havoc twice on their plans in 2022, things are shaping up for a standout show in 2023. Committee member, Steph Simmonds predicts big things. “It's bound to be a huge event. Hands down one of the biggest in the area and lots of people traveling far and wide (even NZ) to be present in Pete's honour.”
The top 6 saddle bronc riders will compete in a memorial chute out for a Bob Berg buckle, and the prizemoney across the board is impressive. “We wanted our prize money to be up there with the best rodeos. With my husband being in the industry himself, we know all the competitors chase that prize money for their championship points, so it was very important for us to make sure our rodeo was on their schedule.” In honour of Peter, the Back O’ Bourke Stampede committee plan to eventually build their rodeo to its former glory, “One day we’d love for it to be the highest paying rodeo again.”
Everyone who knew Pete, knew he was an amazing man, loved by many, so it only seemed right to make the Back O’ Bourke Stampede a memorial for him.

Venue and Camping Details
• Horse Health Declarations to be completed and presented to the secretary’s office at the event. The venue PIC Number is: QGFR2000
• Competitors camping only is available at the venue. There is limited power, however APRA are currently looking into sourcing some generators for the camping area. Water, showers, and toilets all available. Plenty of space to make portable yards for horses.
• CQLX is located only 2.2km from Gracemere Shopping world (Woolworths etc) and the Gracemere Hotel. Rockhampton is 12km away and is a large regional centre with many attractions including shopping, movies, sporting facilities (golf, bowling), restaurants and bars. Yeppoon Beach is also only a short 55km drive. Plenty to do whilst you are in the region!
• Competitor camping is available from Monday afternoon 6th November 2023
• PLEASE NOTE: There is a new stable complex within the competitors camping area, however, unfortunately they are NOT FREE, and must be booked through the CQLX office. This is part of the contract APRA has with CQLX for the venue and unfortunately out of our control. We’d appreciate it if you could cooperate with CQLX on this as they will be monitoring the area on a regular basis.
• All dogs must be restrained and tied at camping areas at all times. No dogs are allowed outside of the competitors camping area, i.e., no dogs allowed at the arena or spectator areas.
Competitors are entitled to one companion for the duration of the NFR. Competitors must supply the name of their companion to be included on the gate entry list. If your companions name is not on the gate entry list, then they will not be given a companion arm band and will need to proceed to purchase a ticket from the spectator’s entrance gate. Companion names must be submitted in your Qualifier Registration Form. Please note, changes can be made to your companion’s name in the lead up to the event, however final names must be received by no later than Monday 6th November 2023.
Competitors will need to attend the competitors gate entry before commencement of round 1 to receive their competitors arm band. This must be worn for the duration of the three days of the NFR. No entrance will be allowed into the event without your competitors arm band. No replacements issued.
This year there will be a designated competitors and companions grandstand which will be separate to the spectator’s area and located at the timed event end of the arena. Competitors and companions will need to show their arm bands to security to gain access to the spectator’s area.
