For those of you who don't know me, my name is Toby Collins and I’m from Maldon, Victoria. I’m a saddle bronc rider and bull rider I spent my junior rodeo years competing with the APRA before spending a significant number of years overseas competing in America and living the cowboy dream. During the week I’m a farrier and horse breaker and I thoroughly enjoy all aspects of the cowboy life.
I fondly remember my younger days in the APRA and the start that it gave me to pursue my cowboying career. I feel that it’s time to give back to the rodeo world and learn how things work behind the scenes of the association My time overseas has given me a wider perspective of the rodeo world and I believe that the knowledge and experience that I have, makes me a valuable member of the Competition Board.
I’d firstly like to congratulate Greg Hamilton on winning another Pro Tour Saddle Bronc Riding title. The dual between Greg and Clayton Braden has been exciting to watch in the final stages of the season and highlights that Saddle Bronc riding is alive and well in Australia. I’d also like to congratulate Callum Clement on his APRA Rookie Saddle Bronc Riding title. The depth of young and talented bronc riders in Australia is outstanding and the future is promising. Congratulations also to all of the other Pro Tour and Rookie Champions of 2024, enjoy the success of your hard work.
The upcoming Bronc Match in November is an exciting event on the saddle bronc riding calendar and is shaping up to showcase Australian talent on a stage like we’ve never seen before. With the historical Warwick rodeo in the coming weeks and the NFR just around the corner, it is an exciting time of year in the APRA. I wish everybody competing the best of luck and safe travels.
SADDLE BRONC RIDING DIRECTOR

Thank you to the Gravener’s for their generosity in sharing Barry’s saddle, so we could honour his rodeo achievements.
If anyone would like to display a trophy saddle, please give me a call.
With just over a month to go we are busier than flies on fresh manure!
Final preparations are well under way and from a coordinators point of view, I’m both nervous and excited as time draws near, but I’m pumped and ready to help the amazing APRA team put on a memorable event with focus on highlighting the outstanding talent we have in our competitors and increasing awareness and attendance to the NFR.
We are very fortunate to welcome returning and new sponsors and appreciate the much-valued support they provide. A special thanks to Logan Lucas from head office for her sponsor announcements via the APRA social media platforms. They look amazing. Keep an eye out for them in the coming weeks.
For information on the NFR, the APRA website is a good point of contact. Directly from the website you can purchase NFR merchandise and NFR gate tickets We also have a soon to be released APRA Juniors Range of footy shorts as a collaboration with the APRA and NFR sponsor, Aussie Footy Shorts Tickets are still available in the Polaris Ranger Raffle, and these can also be found on the APRA website. Each round of this year's NFR will be livestreamed directly on the APRA website also.
A strong advertising campaign begins in October with Southern Cross Austereo including ticket giveaways, promo ads and interviews with organisers This year we have a gold coin donation courtesy bus running a loop around Rockhampton and Gracemere to CQLX all thanks to Bellequip. Our Bling and Speed bar will feature a live action screen so you don't miss a minute of the rodeo and will be open until midnight each night, so competitors are able to mingle after competing. Saturday night, local band ‘Coighty and the Kickstands’ will lead our ‘Party with the Champions’ afterparty
The battle for a back number has been exciting to watch. Back numbers are on order and competitor packs are being prepared with some wonderful inclusions for our valued sponsors. Once the top 15 in each has been finalised, competitors will receive registration packs. These registration packs will provide more detailed information including entry fees and prizemoney. Once again, the APRA is recognising horse, bucking stock, personnel and affiliate of the year awards These will be voting on by the top 15 competitors
As the clock ticks down, we look forward to bringing you an NFR to remember. Production teams are onsite this month to ensure that we can showcase our cowboys and cowgirls in the best light for our local, national and international audiences!

The story goes that Dick White’s Father and Uncle took him to Marrabel rodeo as a 5yo boy and from that day on Dick wanted to be a cowboy. And a cowboy he was. His rodeo career encompassed many things including a sneaky name change, an iconic photo, and a famed bucking horse named Red Terror.
In his early teenage years, Dick’s father heavily disapproved of the young South Australian’s desire to rodeo. Against his father’s wishes Dick entered up anyway and so ‘Johnny Gray from Queensland’ was born The sneaky alias worked for a short period until a wreck at Berri rodeo saw young ‘Johnny’ end up in hospital and an attending police officer recognised the lad as Dick White from Kapunda With his talents and desire undeniable, Dick’s father eventually gave his son his blessing and Dick’s cowboy career boomed.
A famed saddle bronc rider, with feats such as covering the renowned Curio amongst his achievements, it was the iconic photo of Dick riding Cloudbuster at the 1959 Carrieton rodeo that catapulted the cowboy to worldwide fame. Cloudbuster’s reputation as one of Australia’s toughest broncs and Dick’s ability to demonstrate control and technique during the ride and subsequent photo made for a life changing moment. The photo spearheaded a marketing campaign for RM Williams and Dick became an Australian symbol of toughness and perseverance.
Dick was of the era were cowboys competed in every, or at least many, of the rodeo events. His storied career entails an ARRA Steer Wrestling title, and he was a skilled trick rider, but his great love was bucking horses. “He just loved rodeo in general” reminisces his daughter Anita, “however he was most proud of his bronc riding. And bucking horses were the love of his life ” As his competing years slowed down, Dick ventured into owning bucking horses. His standout performer ‘Red Terror’ being renowned all over the countryside
A rough and tough cowboy, maybe Dick’s greatest attribute was his generosity and kindness. Keen to help and guide any young up and coming cowboy who approached him, Dick and wife Janet often welcomed cowboys into their home “Whatever he could do for anyone, he would” Anita proudly remembers. And perhaps Dick said it best in a tv interview shortly before his untimely passing, “If I had my time again, I’d be a cowboy!”
Errol Lather grew up in and around rodeo From Branxholme in the southwestern districts of Victoria, Errol’s childhood was dairy farms, contract mustering and droving. “I sort of grew up with all that around me, the horses and the cows ” His parents “bought into some bucking horses and the horses kind of took over from the cows. I had just been hanging around it (rodeo) since I was a kid ” Starting out in the poddy rides and moving his way through to the steer ride, it was in his late teens when he found his true passion; saddle bronc riding. And it all came about with a bet.
17 and having never been on a bronc before, Errol found himself at a little bush show out from Coleraine, Victoria “It was a hall and just a bit of an arena One of my mates bet me I wouldn’t go in the saddle bronc ride I said you pay my entries and I’ll get on.” The entry fees were $2. Entries were taken on the day and bucking horses were drawn for The nerves were a little high when Errol drew what everyone knew was a good horse. “I end up splitting the win for $12. That was the end of me then, I got the bug.”
Errol tried his hand at most of the rodeo events. “I rodeo bulls for a fair bit, but I would always tear a muscle in my groin, my bareback riding was a bit of a failure. Saddle bronc riding and steer wrestling were my main events. But I really loved the saddle bronc riding. I concentrated on it more.” Several years after that infamous bet that kickstarted his bronc riding, Errol left home and travelled with the Gills tent show and got his feet wet on the rodeo trail It was an easy time to be a cowboy Cowboys were quite well respected and revered wherever they went. Work found them along the way from town to town and life was uncomplicated. “I was winning a fair bit so that made life easier ”
While everyday living was a little bit simpler the competition was far from easy Errol rode against the likes of Ken Coleman, Dave Harman, and Jim McGuire “There were quite a lot of good bronc riders about A lot of them didn’t travel too much, but they were all hard to beat ” It was also a period of growth and change for saddle bronc riding in general “The saddles were changing over No one knew a lot about them, and there was no such thing as rodeo schools Everyone was just making their own way We would sit down and discuss it, but we had to work a lot of things out for ourselves, it was a big learning curve.” The way rodeos looked and were run was also changing, with the introduction of contracted stock and smaller arenas. “One of the best things about my time was we got the chance to ride a lot of different style bucking horses. A lot of those committee horses, you didn’t know what you were getting on, that was a bit exciting as a kid.”
An Australian Saddle Bronc Riding title in 1971features as one of Errol’s highlights of his esteemed career. “I was only 20, and I never expected to win a title that year.” Errol cherishes his Australian title memories and those of winning the Sportsman of the Year Award in his local community of Hamilton Hamilton is an area heavily entrenched in football, and for a cowboy to beat all the footballers for a sportsman of the year award was a feat in itself
Reflecting on his rodeo career, Errol never expected a Hall of Fame induction. “It means a lot to me. And the more I think about it, the more it means. I loved travelling, and meeting people. It took me all over Australia. I was also going to rodeo I thought, it was just something that I loved.”
Terry Evison didn’t just break the all-time season earnings record for any cowboy in the history of the APRA, he shattered it Accumulating a total of $72,579 15 in winnings across three events during the season, the timed event superstar finished the 2024 season as the Pro Tour All Around Cowboy and Pro Tour Steer Wrestling champion. Notably, he also finished second in the standings for the Team Roping Header and Rope and Tie, and impressively surpassed previous season earnings records in all four title races
The record-breaking effort wasn’t even on Terry’s radar in the beginning. His partner Leslie was pregnant with their third child and Terry had planned to “not really go anywhere I was just going to do a handful of rodeos where I had contracts to supply cattle.” But a strong start early on got the Victorian hay farmer keen to keep going “I started winning a bit and I decided to go on with it.”
$72,579.15
$25,514.30
“The season earnings record is probably the thing I’m the most proud of with everything I achieved in 2024.”
The winning never really stopped “I don’t feel like there was one big moment or pivotal win Just a lot of little consistent wins that added up ” With a decent amount won at the halfway point in the season, Terry decided to make the trip north “That was probably the hardest part of the season, going away up north without Leslie and the kids for six weeks.” He made the sacrifices count, banking $16,011.30 alone between Cloncurry and Mount Isa rodeos.
“Practicing regulary” has been the secret to Terry’s consistency in 2024 And he’s carrying that over into his NFR preparation We’ll see him compete in the Steer Wrestling, Rope and Tie, and at both ends in the Team Roping with Aaron Bookluck and Georgie Kapellar “I’m not going to think about it too much, I’ll just try to do what I’ve done all year.”
$45,735.53
$41,438.43
Leanne Caban continues to etch her name into APRA history by winning both the 2024 Pro Tour All Around Cowgirl and Pro Tour Barrel Racing titles, claiming the double win for a third consecutive year.
Leanne acknowledges that her success is a team effort and isn’t without its challenges. “My goal was to just go to where I could get to in between all the commitments at home But the credit goes to my phenomenal horsepower that keeps showing up when it counts ”
The phenomenal horsepower that Leanne is crediting includes Akka Dakka, her dominating barrel racing superstar, and Biddy, the ever-reliable breakaway roping mare “Through a tailored feeding program, important muscle therapy techniques and a great farrier I have managed to keep all the horses working at their best all season. Keeping my horses in the best shape possible has been by key to success ” That and a great support network
“The most pivotal win of 2024 was defintely winning Nebo for the third consecutive year.”
Leanne admits that her family has been crucial to her stellar season. “My husband Dale is my biggest supporter, and he works hard to make sure we can all continue to do what we love with the horses and rodeos ” With commitments at home including cattle and horses to care for, being on rodeo road can be challenging for Leanne. Her “incredible” season is all thanks to family like Dale, and her Mum who travelled north with her this year
As far as the NFR is concerned, Leanne’s not changing anything. “The plan is to have my horses feeling great and to practice hard in the roping pen.
I’ll do a couple of rodeos leadi into the NFR to keep the competitive edge mentally ”
$32,617.00
Greg Hamilton won $32,617 to hold out Clayton Braden and secure his second Saddle Bronc Riding Pro Tour title His 2024 efforts were just shy of breaking the season earnings record set by Cameron Southern in 2023 Not bad considering Greg isn’t a fan of leaving home too much anymore. “I hate leaving home now that I’m getting older, but travelling with good guys and the chance to get on good broncs kept me going.”
“My wife and travelling partners have been my biggest supporters this year and without them I would have just stayed home” Greg admits. The Mitchell based cowboy broke his season wide open when he won Bowen River Xtreme Broncs The win banked Greg $3687 The cowboy consistently banked cheques all over Australia from Yelvertoft to Tooloombilla in Queensland to Tumut and Corryong in the south.
“I’m going to do what I’ve done all year, and just have fun.”
Describing his season as “surprising,” Greg believes its his attitude that has contributed to his success this year. “I think the key this year has been having a better attitude and not worrying about anything other than trying to ride good and to have fun doing it ” He’s not the youngest guy in the draw and finishing as the number one Saddle Bronc Rider means a lot to him “Considering how many good young bronc riders there are around, to be able to compete with them and end the year in front, makes me feel like I may have a few mores years left in me.”
Greg is in an ideal position to earn himself his second Australian title going into Gracemere in November. With a pack of young kids trying to chase him down, Greg’s plan is built around his years of experience. “The plan is pretty simple. Just go and rid lik I’m behind and not to try and protect th I’m going to do what I’ve done all year an just have fun ”
Jarrod McKane has spent another APRA at the top of his game and the top of the leaderboards, cementing his place as one of the best bareback riders of his generation He admits this season was hectic, with the southern run consisting of a lot of rodeos each weekend and his fiancée Molly pregnant with their first child changing the dynamic of the way he travelled The Victorian shearer ended the season with a record breaking $45,326 05 in earnings and his third APRA Pro Tour title
While the numbers say it's not impossible for Jarrod to be beaten in the Australian Title race come November in Gracemere, it is very likely we will see him claim his third gold buckle. He acknowledges that his 2024 season is a testament that every rodeo matters. “I think it shows that every rodeo counts, big or small, and it all adds up in the end.” And his earnings record is a cherry on top. “It’s a nice little bonus” and a reward for all the hard work to continually hone his craft.
$45,326.05
“I was just trying to enjoy myself and enjoy riding bucking horses.”
With dominating rides all over Australia, Jarrod’s win in Sydney at Easter time is his highlight. He’s a fan of the three head format claiming it’s something “ you can’t really fluke. I feel like I didn’t win at as many places this year, but I placed consistently everywhere.” This season was about “just having fun and not treating it as a job as such. I was just trying to enjoy myself and enjoy riding bucking horses.”
New dad to little cowboy Lenny, Jarrod thanks those closest to him for all their support throughout the season. “My family and friends have been my biggest supporters this year.” Well and truly in the driver’s seat coming into the NFR, Jarrod plans on maintaining the same attitude that’s worked for him all season long. “The idea is to keep pushing forward and do the best job I can.”
$20,470.98
At the beginning of the 2024 season Angela Simpson was recovering from shoulder surgery and doing everything she could to be back to full strength and get back in the arena By the end of the season Ange was the number one Breakaway Roper in Australia With a campaign that didn’t start until February, Ange won in all corners of the country A standout northern run which saw her win big at Charters Towers, Mount Isa and Capella in the fourth quarter of the season, secured Ange her first Breakaway Roping Pro Tour title
Ange didn’t hesitate when asked to name which of her many wins in 2024 meant the most. “Mount Isa. It’s been one I’ve worked towards winning for a long time. I don’t think there’s another rodeo as exciting as Mount Isa to win.” The win highlighted the Emerald cowgirl’s consistency throughout the year. She acknowledges that “consistency and patience” has been her key to success this year. “I’ve spent a lot of quality time in the practice pen.”
“This wasn’t something that I had actually thought about. It just happened and I guess that’s where my consistency and patience has paid off.”
Ange credits her family and close friends for supporting her rodeo ambitions and believing in her abilities. A truck driver during the day (and nights) sees Ange working big hours. “My Mum and sister help look after my horses while I work.” They can also be found “penning up calves late at night so I can practice.” Not only does the cowgirl have a strong support system, but she also has depth in her horsepower. We’ve seen Ange shine on both her bay gelding Tuff and her pretty mare Destiny all year round.
As far as the approaching NFR is concerned, Ange isn’t thinking too much about it “I don’t really have a plan ” The allround hand will continue to focus on the things that are important to her, enjoying her horses and her roping and seeing where it takes her
Campbell Hodson is the 2024 APRA Pro Tour Team Roping Heading and Pro Tour Rope & Tie Champion We’ve come to expect standout performances from the Charters Towers cowboy and this season was no exception. Taking his young family on the road, Campbell committed to rodeoing in the south early on and so began a back and forth between himself and Terry Evison at the top of not one, but three pro tour standings When it was all said and done, Campbell had broken 2 season earnings records, for both the Rope & Tie and the Heading and also substantially surpassed the All Around Cowboy season earnings set by Cameron Southern last year.
Notably Campbell added almost an extra $10,000 to his own seasons earning record in the team roping header department However, more impressively we saw him shatter the seemingly untouchable Rope & Tie season earnings record held by the godfather of rope and tie in Australia, Shane Kenny, since 2008 We’ve seen Shane mentor Campbell since his junior days and it seems fitting that Campbell be the one to rewrite one of the roping king’s records.
Rope & Tie
$29,479.38
Team Roping Header
$28,114.08
“It wouldn’t be possible without my amazing little family.”
With a team of outstanding horses, and an arsenal of classy team roping partners, Campbell is well on his way to becoming one of the best we have ever seen He bested the rope & tie field at two of the biggest APRA rodeos on the calendar by almost more than 2 seconds each time to add $5801 from Cloncurry and $3962 from Nebo to his 2024 account. Touchingly, on presentation of his buckle at Cloncurry, he gifted it to the event sponsor’s son, no doubt fanning a rodeo flame in the young boy
There is no doubt, come NFR time in Gracemere, Campbell will bring the heat. The timed event sensation has won and dominated all of his events on the same day on numerous occasions this season. He is a legitimate chance to win three Australian titles in November and add to his already impressive Australian title haul With his two little boys, Colby and C cheering him on from the arena fenc Campbell will surely be exciting to watch
Aaron Bookluck is one of the greatest team roping heelers in APRA history and his 2024 season has been a performance to remember The Gippsland cowboy finished atop the Team Roping Heeling standings to win his 8th APRA Pro Tour Heeling title He also shattered the previous season earnings record when he banked $27,279.55 for his season’s efforts. In his own words Aaron describes his 2024 as simply “unbelievable.”
Always an exciting cowboy to watch rope, Aaron started his season off strong at the southern rodeos closer to his homebase of Nilma North, Vic. However, it was a big win at Cloncurry in August, that stands out the most to him. The win paid $5250 to Aaron and his long-time team roping partner Terry Evison The dynamic duo have roped together since their junior days and together they have won almost everything there is to win in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association. We will see Aaron heeling them down for Terry in Gracemere in November as he edges closer to a phenomenal 5th Australian title
Winning a Pro Tour is a really big thing.”
For Aaron 2024 has been about “making sure I stay solid and keeping it all as simple as it can be. I only worried about my runs and keeping my horse fresh and free.” The laid-back roper credits his inner circle for helping make the rodeoing possible “My Dad, sister, and partner Georgie, as well as my good mates at home have made it easier for me to get away to rodeos.”
For Aaron, the winning feeling never seems to get old His 8th Pro Tour Heeling win “is a really big thing” to Aaron “It’s something we all want to win, alongside an Australian title ” He admits that it didn’t come easy, with all-time great Shane Kenny nipping at his heels all season long. “Having to battle it out with Shane Kenny, he’s a tough cowboy to get around.”
The NFR promises to be more of exactly what we’re used to seeing from Aaron “The plan is to stay solid but try and win rounds at the same time.”
Dylan Weir describes his standout Bull Riding season as simply “successful.” The Brungle Creek based cowboy has been on a mission all season to bank big cheques and set the bar high not only for himself, but for every other Bull Rider trying to chase him down in the APRA Bull Riding standings “I set myself a couple of goals and I achieved both of them – winning the Pro Tour Bull Riding title and also breaking the record for the most money won in the Bull Ride.” Achieving the end of year win “ means everything” to the young cowboy. It’s the standout bull rider’s first Pro Tour win and “it makes all the time and kilometres worth it ”
He had big wins all over the map but counts Nebo as his highlight. A pivotal win for Dylan as “it’s one of the biggest rodeos and it’s one that everyone wants to win ” While the winning seemingly came easy for Dylan this season, it never comes without challenges “Travelling to big shows and leaving my family behind was hard, especially because my partner Tyla and son Waylon have been my biggest support system.”
$46,831.10
“The mind is a powerful thing and if that’s right, then everything else will come naturally.”
“Friends and the people that I travelled with during the season have also been a massive help with getting down the road,” admits Dylan But it’s his body and mind that he credits to his 2024 success “Keeping my body and mind fit,” has been a big focus for Dylan “The mind is a powerful thing and it that’s right, then everything else will come naturally ”
Dylan will carry a $20,000 plus lead into the 2024 NFR and has no plans off backing off the gas pedal “I plan to show up and do what I’ve done all season – turn up and ride my bulls ” But the young cowboy isn’t stopping there, already admitting that his goals for 2025 are bigger and bolder “I’ve already set goals for next season beat my own earnings record and win another Pro Tour ”
