For those unable to attend in person to the upcoming AGM, a zoom link will be made available to members to participate in the AGM. This link will be released in coming days.
August is always a favourite time of year with the renowned Northern Run in full swing and the weather most likely warmer the further North we go. It’s not just the great weather we all chase but the chance to claim prestigious wins with fantastic payouts.
As the entry numbers come in, we have seen a decline in entries from the previous year at some of the rodeos. The cost of living no doubt a big contributor to this decline. I want to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to come along to the AGM in Mt Isa and be involved through discussion on how we can keep helping make this great association grow. As a member don’t be afraid to ask questions and put fresh ideas forward.
I also want to encourage members to be mindful of how you can assist committees to ensure the smooth running of their event. As a barrel racer, don’t hesitate to contact me for assistance if your turn has come to set the course. Or even if it isn’t your turn, show up anyway and learn how it is done. Some may see it as an inconvenience and a little unfair that we have to contribute to setting the course but I see it as the perfect opportunity to have a good look and feel of the surface. If we can do this early enough and there are any issue, we can bring it to the committee or contractors attention to have the problem rectified without jeopardising start times. It is also greatly appreciated by both judges and committee’s if anyone jumps in to roll a drum in and out of the arena and be present to stand drums up during the competition. A small contribution goes a long way.
One more thing we can all do for the professionalism of our association is to always be conscious of how we present ourselves and have a positive impact on promoting rodeo. Remember our dress code, be amazing role models and use social media to promote positively. Wayne McGhee broached the subject perfectly at the Junior National Finals about how he sees someone that truly embraces the cowboy code and lives life by it. Put on your cowboy hat, cowboy boots and cowboy shirt and be proud that other people will see you as just that – A cowboy/girl!!!
Wishing you all safe and prosperous travels as we roll toward the home stretch of the season.
BARREL RACING DIRECTOR
This month marks my first 12 months in the APRA and gee didn’t that fly! I’ve really enjoyed the challenge of learning about the APRA and your wonderful industry, and I’ve been lucky to be able to pick up the phone and find a helpful voice on the end of it when I’ve had questions, no matter how ridiculous they were. So, thank you to everyone who’s helped me this past year: Directors, Members, committees and my staff. I can’t wait to see what the next year holds!
We are well into the Northern Run with Pittsworth, Taroom, Charters Towers and Richmond already successfully held. Competitor numbers have been excellent, and the committees should be commended for the quality of events they are holding.
The online portal has been well adopted and we are experiencing about 40% of entries being received via the Member Portal. It does seem that Bigpond and iCloud accounts were blocking our system email, so please if you have had difficulties accessing your verification emails – give me a call in the office and I can work around it for you.
Thank you to all those that were involved in the trial process of the Member Portal and everyone who has provided feedback. We appreciate the help in achieving our aim of making the Member Portal easy to use and beneficial to members.
I’d also like to send congratulations to Kayla Grayson and her family after welcoming a little girl in June Kayla has been working on the new APRA software and member portal and is currently on maternity leave and we wish her all the best during this special time
2025 Dates are rapidly being filled, so if your committee would like to affiliate with us again, please let us know as soon as your dates are finalised Affiliating with APRA includes public risk insurance for your event through Affinity Insurance, Head Office support, event promotion through the monthly Rodeo News and our new website, entry taking including APRA Member Online portal, complete event paperwork and the option for Head Office Payouts
We offer support from the planning stage to well after your event, so please give us a call if you’d like further information The AGM will be held next Wednesday is Mount Isa, we need a quorum to proceed with the meeting so if you are in Isa, please attend the meeting For those at home, we will have a zoom link available so you will be able to join in the meeting as well Details will be provided next week before the meeting
Extreme Steer Wrestling Australia has launched with a bang in Charters Towers, after a successful inaugural event. 34 of Australia’s finest cowboys toughed it out for the chance at a stack of cash and a handcrafted breast collar. Hometown cowboy and 3-time Australian Champion, Ryley Gibb was a dominant winner. “It’s a great feeling to win the first one. No matter how much money is up, everyone always wants to get their name on the board first.”
Ryley claimed wins in both the long and short rounds, as well as the average, banking $3731.94 to boost him up the national standings after having to sit on the sidelines for 3 months with a wrist injury earlier in the season. “I dislocated my wrist at Bundalong and had to have surgery. This is a great win to help make up for those rodeos I missed and it’s a great time to get on a roll with all of the money that is on offer over the next month of rodeos. I’ll definitely make the effort to get to Marrar now for the next one ”
Marra, NSW is the next stop for the Extreme Steer Wrestling Australia calendar where we’ll see them pair up with the Xtreme Broncs program. We’ll then see events at Geelong, Vic and another yet to be confirmed southern location. The series of Steer Wrestling events will culminate with a finals event early in 2025. This exciting new venture is the outcome of “a bunch of mates getting together and brainstorming how we could improve the steer wrestling in Australia,” acknowledge Gene McDonald Tom Willoughby and Gene have been the driving force behind bringing bigger and better opportunities for steer wrestlers to reality.
Gene highlighted that the long-term goal for the affiliate is quite simple. “Our aim is to make steer wrestling better and give cowboys opportunities that they have never had before ” The duo relied on their personal experiences and knowledge of rodeo to design a format that they believe promotes those goals and showcases their event like never before. “It’s about bringing steer wrestlers together, wanting to compete for more money and growing our event within rodeo,” says Tom.
“We can’t be any happier with how our first event went. We also can’t thank the Charters Tower’s rodeo committee enough They believed in our idea and were generous enough to welcome us into their venue and rodeo program We have some wrinkles to iron out, but they’re only little and we’re committed to improving with every event we run.” Tom confirmed that each event will post a minimum of $5000, follow the ‘one round and a short go’ format and when it comes to the series’ final, “you won’t nod your head for any better money anywhere else in Australia as a steer wrestler.”
Ryley Gibb won the Cowboy’s Closet short go to seal the win in Charters Towers.

“Rosie’s Boy is just a good horse to have Every time I’ve drawn it I’ve won or placed good ”
“I have a bit of trouble with the hat Sometimes it plays good, but other times it just doesn’t want to be there ”
“Technique wise, everything looks good in this photo The horse is bucking and I’m beating it to the ground with my feet. If you have your feet in them before their feet hit the ground all of their power doesn’t get sent up your arm ”
“I don’t have a game plan as such for a ride You can never really tell what a horse is going to do in a ride, you just need to concentrate on doing your job and let it all play out ”
“I went into the NFR in second place. I never looked at any standings or numbers like some people do. I just believe in letting it play out, and luckyily it worked in my favour.”
To celebrate 80 years of professional rodeo in Australia, the APRA has launched an exciting merchandise line including caps and fishing shirts. To view and shop the entire range, head over to the new website and hit the ‘Shop’ tab.
We’d love to see you out and about in our APRA merchandise. Tag us in your socials and help us share the celebration!
In 1959 the Rotary Club of Mount Isa had an idea to run a rodeo to help put their little outback town ‘on the map.’ Fast forward to 2024 and the Mount Isa Rodeo is the biggest rodeo in the Southern Hemisphere.
Until 2009 the rodeo made its home at Kalkadoon Park. As famous for its coloured chutes and huge arena as it was for 737’s flying low overhead preparing to land next door at the airport The rodeo has built a reputation as the one to win, been recognised internationally and is a tourist bucket list stop And it has without a doubt, put Mount Isa on the map.
The APRA wishes goodluck to every member competing at the Mount Isa rodeo this week.
