Terry Evison has had a big year. The Pine Grove cowboy absolutely shattered the seasons earnings records for the most money ever won by a cowboy in a single regular season. He banked $72,579.15 in rodeo winnings to best Cameron Southern’s record of $45,253.68 from 2023. The three event timed event hand, also claimed the Steer Wrestling Pro Tour title and topped another earnings record by over $7,000 In true all around cowboy fashion, Terry was also a standout in the Rope & Tie and Heading races, entering the NFR in second place, and surpassing previous earnings records in both events. While Terry was busy in the arena, he and partner Leslie also welcomed their third child, daughter Taniah into the world.

“I wasn’t really going to go rodeoing anywhere other than where we had the contracted cattle” admits Terry. “Leslie wasn’t riding, and we had some things that we wanted to get done at home.” But the 37year-old hay farmer knows that in rodeo when an opportunity presents itself it’s wise to take it. Australian titles are “always hard to win.” A sizzling summer and southern rodeo run gave Terry the permission to pursue the season a little harder. “It wasn’t planned to go hard or to go up north, but I thought that with such a good start I’d should at least try and finish it out ”

Terry continued to add a wedge of winnings to his tally, banking $16,011.30 at Cloncurry and Mount Isa rodeos alone. As the season ended, he had punched himself 4 NFR qualifications, impressively making it at both ends in the Team Roping. Already with 2 Australian Heeling titles and an All Around title to his name, it’s the steer wrestling event that is his favourite “Steer Wrestling is something that you can’t do forever.” And while he’s disappointed that he didn’t have a strong finish in his preferred event, his recordbreaking season was enough to see him crowned the All Around Cowboy of Australia.

“It’s pretty special. It’s a hard task to be at your best across three events consistently. It takes a lot of hard work and practice.” And after a back and forth battle all season long with Campbell Hodson, Terry still wasn’t sure he’d done enough. In fact, he thought he hadn’t. His NFR “started out pretty rough, I missed one straight up in the team roping and the steer wrestling on the first night I thought that had kind of taken me out of it ” He felt like he spent the rest of the rounds trying to catch back up. The timed event cattle contractor acknowledges the workload involved in caring for and organising the NFR cattle was a great distraction. “I didn’t have too much time to think about myself, I was too busy with the cattle. I didn’t even realise I’d won it until they announced my name at the presentations ”

This All Around Cowboy title marks Terry’s fourth gold buckle and second All Around Cowboy win. Not showing any signs of slowing down or dropping an event, Terry is keen to attack 2025 and see how things play out. “We’ll see how the start of the season goes and work from there ”

Leanne Caban is showing no signs of relinquishing her strong hold on the All Around Cowgirl and Barrel Racing titles as 2024 sees her win the double for the third consecutive year. The 56-year-old Emerald, Queensland based cowgirl was nothing short of dominating once again this season. And while Leanne has quite the habit of winning gold buckles, she’s the first to admit the shine isn’t rubbing off. “I think with age you learn to appreciate every single title. Every one of them is really special and I don’t take any of them for granted ”

A huge part of Leanne’s success is the big, long-legged gelding and 2024 Horse of the Year, Akka Dakka. Leanne is a passionate horse trainer and Akka is undoubtedly the star graduate of her program. Bought as a gangly 2-year-old, the road to gold buckles wasn’t an easy one. Thinking back to a baby Akka, Leanne remembers “he wasn’t the easiest He was quirky and could be a little cold backed, you always had to kind of encourage him along without getting after him otherwise you’d end up in the dust ” A kissing spine diagnosis in 2019 set the duo’s plans back when Leanne made the decision to operate on Akka. Surgery, many months off and then rigorous rehab ensued. Now, at 15yrs old, Akka has no signs of the troubling back condition. “You just know that he is going to try every single time. He just enjoys his job, and it never seems to faze him to just go do it.”

An enthusiastic all around cowgirl, Leanne is also a force in the Breakaway Roping. “It’s always my goal to do well in the All Around, and I’d love another Breakaway Roping title. I practice my roping a lot and I do like my roping.” While horse sharing and family commitments prove to sometimes be a challenge in the roping department for the mum of two and wife, she makes it work. “I’m just trying to balance life and do the best I can ”

With Akka at the top of his game and no signs of slowing down, Leanne plans to carry on rodeoing the same as she has been. “I’m just going to do the same as what I’ve done the last few years and go to what I can around our life and work commitments.” It’s not lost on Leanne the calibre of horse that she has in Akka. While she may be older than a lot of the barrel racers, she’s using her wisdom and experience to maximise her horsepower “I’m so fortunate to have Akka and the confidence that comes from knowing that you have a horse like that that can win for you.”

Leanne already has made a good start to her 2025 campaign, and excitingly is going to make the trip to The American qualifier in January With ‘Hammer,’ her daughter Maddie’s horse already over there, Leanne is mounted and set to go “Maybe, if anything, this year’s titles are that little more special, because of The American opportunity.”

Jarrod McKane claimed back-to-back Australian Bareback Riding titles and his third gold buckle in 2024. The Pro Tour winner had a standout season and went into Gracemere with an all but uncatchable lead. Mathematically, it was possible for cowboys to catch him Realistically, he was never going to let that happen. The dominating cowboy was a little disappointed in his NFR, but still managed a win in round 2 and finished second in the average to hold off a red-hot Brendon Crawley for the title.

“It feels good to win another one.” A cowboy who makes riding bareback horses look easy; he admits titles like these never come easy “They’re always hard to win You still have to put in the hours ” While still only 23 years old, Jarrod reflects on the experience he has garnered since that first title back in 2021 “I probably know a little bit more about horses and that now, just how to work with horses a bit better.” And with that has come consistency he explains. “I’m riding more consistent, that all just comes down to experience. There’s still a lot of hard work and dedication amongst it too.”

Jarrod is a lover of hard work it seems As a full time shearer during the week, and a bareback rider on the weekends, his body is put to the test. “I used to be a bit of a gym body, but I’ve gone away from that a little bit and just rely more on the spur board and work to keep me in the shape I need to be in. I think I’ve just learnt that my body actually needs to rest.” While he finds the shearing great for his general fitness and “it keeps you mentally fit,” he concedes he has to balance it with some other things like the sauna to maintain his flexibility that the bareback riding demands

The Wodonga based superstar is a new dad to Lenny, with his partner Molly, and is loving the new adventures that brings to rodeo road “He comes with us everywhere and it’s adding a bit of excitement to it. It’s fun taking him and showing him new things.” Jarrod is looking forward to 2025, where it’ll consist of a bit more of a family focus. Molly will chase her rookie year in the breakway roping and he’s looking forward to supporting her through that. “She has come everywhere with me and backed me, so I’m going to do the same for her ”

As for himself, Jarrod has no plans on slowing down just yet. “I’m still enjoying it and having fun.” He’s excited to venture to The American qualifier in Kentucky in January, but admits it’ll just be a quick trip over and back. A young family and work commitments will mean Australia will be his main playground for the near future Not one to get too far ahead of himself, Jarrod’s not making any long-term plans in terms of his riding career “It’s been a pretty good ride so far. And as long as I keep enjoying it, I’ll keep getting on them.”

Angela Simpson didn’t have a gold buckle on her mind at the beginning of the 2024 season. Instead, she had surgery on her worn-out shoulder that had caused her pain and grief for a long time. Healed up and good to get back in the arena by February the Emerald based cowgirl headed south for some rodeos. An Australian title wasn’t her primary focus, she just wanted to enjoy her horses and rodeoing. “There wasn’t really a plan at all Every time I’ve ever planned to do something or chase something it’s never really worked out, so I just was happy to be placing and getting cheques and see where it led.”

Ange paired her strong southern run with an absolutely outstanding northern run, including a bucket list win at the mighty Mount Isa, to finish out the season atop the leaderboard. She admits that handling pressure has never been her strong point and so going into the NFR with a lead and as an odds-on favourite title contender she decided to change her approach from previous years “I just tried to stay relaxed and go rope. I think the biggest thing was believing in myself.”

The other key component to Ange’s success is her arsenal of horsepower. With a truckload of good ones, it was 2024 Horse of the Year Tuff that she called on for the four rounds in Gracemere “I really relied on Tuff at the NFR I just knew he wouldn’t let me down He gives me 100% every time When I’m on him I don’t have to worry about anything.” The easy-going bay gelding knows his job. And Ange knew hers.

There were no doubts as the last calves were run at Gracemere, who had claimed the gold buckle Banking a cheque in every round, including a win in round 2, Ange claimed the season trifecta by adding the NFR Average win and an Australian Title to her 2024 haul. A feat that is not lost on Ange as she knows and loves how competitive the cowgirls are in the breakaway roping. In fact, it’s her favourite thing about roping. “I love the competition.”

Ange is approaching 2025 with a similar plan to that of 2024 “I don’t really have a plan I’ll probably go down to the Christmas rodeos and see how things go.” As she reflects on her standout season and her first Australian title, the allround hand admits “it takes a lot of time, hard work and practice.” Not shy on working at perfecting her craft, there’s no doubt we’ll be seeing Angela Simpson in the winner’s circle again in 2025

AUSTRALIAN AUSTRALIAN AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONS CHAMPIONS CHAMPIONS

Aaron Bookluck is well on his way to being the greatest team roper that Australia has ever seen. The 35year-old from Nilma North in the deep south of Victoria is the 2024 Australian Team Roping Heeling Champion. The win marks Aaron’s fifth gold buckle and fourth on the heeling side. “It’s awesome to win another one, it feels great I started out the season with the goal to win the Pro Tour and then hopefully the Australian title.” Aaron ticked both of those goals off, and also broke a season earnings record along the way, but not without a push from another of the all-time greats in Shane Kenny. “He’s always a tough cowboy to get around.”

Aaron’s roster of team roping partners is nothing short of the best of the best There are always names like Campbell Hodson, Georgie Kapeller and Ben Smith pencilled in next to his name on rodeo sheets However, it’s his partnership with lifelong friend and roping partner Terry Evison that has proved the most lucrative for him. The duo literally grew up roping together and their partnership is one to be admired. “We never question each other; he looks after his end, and I look after mine.” There’s confidence in familiarity and that’s evident when you see Aaron and Terry rope together. “We don’t really discuss much, we might quickly talk about a steer but it’s pretty brief ”

The dynamic duo banked big wins all over in 2024, but none bigger than their $5250 payday at the famed Curry Merry Muster. Aaron has spent a lifetime perfecting his roping craft and spends countless hours in the practice pen. However, when it comes down to it the laid-back cowboy doesn’t let himself think too much about the actual roping “I just stick to the basics that were taught to me when I started, and I don’t try to change anything. The one thing I try to always do is ride a good corner, that helps me a lot.” Aaron carried that same mindset into his week at Gracemere, intent to not do too much thinking and to let the rope do the talking.

“The NFR plan was to stay focused, rope consistently, and try to win a few rounds along the way.” With a no time in the opening round, Aaron and Terry bounced back to make a statement in the second round. The Victorians were 4.9 seconds to win the round and clock the fastest time of the NFR They went on to split second in the next round and place second in the coveted average. “I didn’t do as good as I would’ve liked on the last steer, but it was enough to secure the title.”

One of the few cowboys to etch his name beside Australian titles at both ends of the team roping, Aaron is not shy about wanting more gold buckles “Johnny Osbourne has won seven, I’d love to go around him.” With the early part of the rodeo season in the south, he admits the plan is to try start the 2025 season off as well as he did this season and warrant travelling away from his home state, family and work commitments to chase down another title. And while he has proven he can rope with the best of them at both ends, for the time being we’ll see him stick to the heeling side “Heeling is definitely my favourite ”

AUSTRALIAN AUSTRALIAN AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONS CHAMPIONS CHAMPIONS

Campbell Hodson is back in the gold buckle circle. The Charters Towers cowboy has made a habit of claiming Australian titles in his rodeo career and 2024 saw him add another two, now making him an 11 times Australian champion. Campbell finished the NFR week in Gracemere as the Australian Team Roping Heading Champion and Rope & Tie Champion. At 27 years old, his trophy cabinet now includes 4 Rope & Tie titles and 3 Heading titles, to go with his 4 All Around Cowboy wins.

The father of two hit the rodeo trail hard right from the beginning in 2024, but the motives were more family driven than anything else Packing up sons Colby 3, and Caleb 1, Campbell and his partner Tylen headed south to escape the north Queensland heat for several months. “We decided that it was probably our last chance to go and do something like that as a family while the boys are the age they are, and we had less commitments at home. It was lots of fun; we got to do a lot of stuff with the boys that we don’t normally get to do when we’re at home working.” While enjoying the family time, trying to raise the bar in the arena is always in the back Campbell’s mind

After watching new season earnings records be set in 2023, the all around standout quietly set about trying to raise the bar. “I did think that it would be kind of cool to get that achieved.” And while he narrowly missed getting his name etched next to that record in the All Around race, Campbell did win more than anyone ever has before in both the Heading and the Rope & Tie The passionate horse trainer admitting that this year’s successes feel “that bit more special” due to his outstanding team of horses. “The horses have been a big part of it. In the past I’ve always dabbled in mounting out and this year almost everything I won was on my own young team of horses.”

Headlining Campbell’s horsepower is his 12yo Rope & Tie gelding Shorty “He’s just so easy He never lets me down.” On the heading side of things, he has the big eye-catching grey gelding Sonic and backing them up is Wombat, the 2024 Horse of the Year in both the Rope & Tie and Heeling. While they all have different stories, every member of Campbell’s team has come through his training program, and that’s one of the things he’s most proud of. “Horsepower is a big thing,” and Campbell’s equine partners are a testament to his dedication and work ethic to be the very best he can be

After a sensational regular season, Campbell’s NFR start was a little shaky “I missed the first two calves straight up ” With the pressure on him to get things tidied up in the last few rounds, he relied on his years of experience and roping ability. “I actually wasn’t too worried. I’ve been guilty of backing off and safetying up in the past.” With that not being an option, we saw Campbell do what he does best, and that’s win. Out of the average in the Rope & Tie, Campbell blasted through his last calf to win the round He then added a win in the Team Roping average with partner Brendan Kenny to seal the deal on both titles and surely cement himself as one of the best we’ve ever seen with a rope in his hand.

Ryley Gibb claimed his fourth Australian title in a come from behind battle that literally came down to the wire. Admitting that when it was all said and done, he still didn’t know if he’d won it or not. “It was really close, like a few hundred dollars I think, and none of us could work out who’d won it.” The 29-year-old Charters Towers local had gone into the finals a lot further down the pack than we’re used to seeing. “I knew I had a chance, but it was always going to be a bit of an uphill battle.”

A regular at the top of the steer wrestling standings, Ryley entered the NFR mid-pack after a dislocated wrist early in the season saw him sit out a lot of rodeos. “I landed on it wrong on Australia Day at Bundalong and didn’t realise until the next morning it was actually dislocated.” The injury put Ryley on the bench for 3 months. The fencing contractor by day, made his first runs back in May, with some catching up to do

With a small title chance coming into Gracemere, but no spotlight on him, Ryley appreciated the pressure being on some of the other big men instead of himself. “I enjoyed this NFR a lot more. The last few years I’ve gone in first or second and this year I was down the pack and had nothing to lose.” With no pressure came fewer nerves and Ryley was able to just concentrate on making runs Although known for his picture-perfect technique, he admittedly didn’t get off to the start he’d hoped

“I didn’t start off real good I was kind of getting on top of those fresh steers and it wasn’t working.” After not placing in the first two rounds, Ryley was excited to draw a good one in the third round. “I messed him up a bit and was longer than I wanted to be. I thought then that I might have blown my chance.” The fourth round would see him decide to lay it all on the line and see where the chips fell. “I drew the only steer that I didn’t want, and I was mad about it for a little while ” With nothing he could do about the steer he had drawn, he decided to change his thinking and attack the opportunity at a gold buckle. “I thought well let’s just try blow the barrier out and see what happens.”

What happened was a 4 45 second run to win the round and finish Ryley second in the average and saw him reclaim the Australian title. Now with four gold buckles to his name and on track to becoming one of the greatest steer wrestlers of his era, Ryley admits that it’s the comradery amongst the competitors that is the most special. “The group of boys is just unreal. Everyone is always there backing each other all the time. That’s my favourite thing ”

AUSTRALIAN AUSTRALIAN AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONS CHAMPIONS CHAMPIONS

Michael Johnston has risen to the top of the saddle bronc riding ranks in a hurry. The Wellington, NSW based cowboy was last year crowned as the APRA Rookie Champion and went one better in 2024 to finish as the Australian Saddle Bronc Riding champion. While Michael’s dad is Scott Johnston, the internationally acclaimed saddle bronc rider, Michael himself never really grew up dreaming about riding broncs. He’d dabbled in some junior steer riding and the like, but it wasn’t until his dad suggested he enter the saddle bronc ride at Yass rodeo that he even entertained the idea of being a bronc rider. “I ended up winning the first time I got on one. But if it wasn’t for him suggesting it, I don’t think I ever would have started.”

Fiercely competitive, Michael is a believer in “giving it everything you got or don’t do it.” And that is how he has approached riding bucking horses ever since that first one in Yass. “I would not be riding anywhere near as good without dad’s help. Just all the little things he sees here and there” Michael confesses about having his father’s input and knowledge in his back pocket. While some would feel the pressure of living up to their father’s legacy, Michael treats it as a blessing. “I don’t feel any pressure and he doesn’t put any pressure on me. It’s just riding broncs and having fun doing it.”

Riding consistent all year and giving himself a title chance come the NFR was Michael’s quiet goal all year long. The horse breaker and farrier banked big wins at several of the Xtreme events including Marrar, Tumut and the short go at Corryong throughout the season, putting himself in a good position going into the finals. Michael’s game plan going into Gracemere was no different to any other rodeo. “My mindset was just to keep riding broncs the same as I had all year long. Whatever you draw you just have to ride it as good as you can.” One of the most valuable things his dad has instilled in him is you have to stay in the moment and ride your bronc jump for jump. “You can’t worry about anything else or anybody else, that’s no help.”

Michael’s approach paid off. “The first round I wasn’t really happy with, it felt a bit rough.” However, it was good enough for third money in the round and would be the lowest he placed for the entirety of the finals. He went on to ride cowboy favourite Whiskey Boy for 85.5 points to win the next round. Backing it up with another win in round 3 on his way to claiming the average title, Michael admits he still didn’t realise he’d done enough for the gold buckle. “I knew it was close, but it wasn’t until they called my name out at the presentations that I realised I’d won it.”

Michael’s biggest concern during the NFR was not about bronc riding. His wife Elise was at home in NSW, heavily pregnant with the couple’s third child and they were hoping she could hold on until Michael made it home. In perfect timing, son Kasey was born 5 days after his dad was named an Australian champion. Now a father of three, raising his young family is Michael’s highest priority. With plans to travel to Kentucky to contest The American qualifier and whatever doors that opportunity may open, he acknowledges that chasing rodeos on the world stage is not a realistic option. 2025 will more than likely “be a bit quiet. I plan to start getting on some bareback horses and work a bit harder at my bull riding.”

Dylan Weir is the Australian Bull Riding Champion. A title he had his mind set on all year long. The quiet spoken cowboy had big goals as the 2024 season opened and he successfully smashed them all. With big wins at the likes of Nebo rodeo and Penrith Xtreme Bull Ride, Dylan won more money bull riding than anyone ever has and broke the season’s earnings record His efforts allowed him breathing room at the NFR to the tune of $20,000 “It was a bit nerve wracking going into the finals, just having so much of a lead and trying not to throw it away.”

From Brungle Creek near Tumut in NSW, Dylan didn’t come from a rodeo background. He grew up riding horses and going to campdrafts. “We used to go to the local rodeos and watch.” Growing up down the road from good mate and fellow cowboy Tom Kerr, the pair used to race home from school to get on the bucking drum together. While he initially started out riding both saddle broncs and bulls, he was quick to recognise that the bucking horses “weren’t for me.” And so, he decided to focus all of his attention on perfecting his craft bull riding. “I love the adrenalin rush!”

Dylan’s rodeo plans were put on hold when he and partner Tyla, welcomed their first son and were faced with complications with young Waylon’s heart. “He spent the first 8 months in Syndey in hospital and I didn’t rodeo at all. I just worked and travelled back and forward from Sydney.” With his son’s health back on track, Dylan set out to make bull riding a priority this season. The 24-year-old left no stone unturned, proving that you can truly achieve anything you set your mind to. “I’d never really set a goal before with my rodeoing You have to know where you’re headed before you can do good ” Dylan believes

A equal second place cheque in the first round of the NFR and an average cheque were enough to seal the deal for Dylan. His finals were a little less than he expected from himself, but the mentally strong bull rider is always focused forward. “I drew really good, and some things just didn’t go to plan You have to try not to worry about it and focus on what’s ahead ” With his first gold buckle in the bag, Dylan is keen to start the campaign for the next one.

As Christmas approaches, so does Dylan and Tyla’s second child. The cowboy plans to make a quick trip to Kentucky to try his luck at The American qualifier, but with a fresh baby at home to enjoy the family man isn’t too keen to be gone long 2025 will see him back following the APRA calendar and out to prove that he can do it all over again this season.
