COMPETITION BOARD FROM THE

As the Easter runs have drawn to an end, we have seen a massive start to the senior rodeo season with more rodeos and higher posted prize money than ever before in the southern states. This has brought a large number of competitors down for the southern run which in turn has made the competition throughout the steer wrestling extremely tough.

This time of year also brings the end of our junior season with the top 10 Jnr competitors gearing up to throw their hats in the ring for the Junior National Finals in Emerald Queensland. Congratulations to all the rodeo committees thus far for their hard work but especially to the committees that have gone the extra mile and have committed to running full junior rodeo programs this season. The junior membership is the cement of longevity for our much-loved sport and the reason for many competitors to keep turning up each weekend. We have seen a huge growth in the number of junior breakaway ropers and junior team ropers, which has tripled over the last 3 years. This is a credit to our committees and stock contractors for providing the events and correct stock to encourage our junior members in their chosen events.

Good luck to all of our juniors for the last few rodeos inside the junior season. We look forward to watching you all battle it out for a gold buckle!

Gene McDonald

HEAD OFFICE FROM THE

The Easter Run has kept us hopping in the office! Thank you for your patience while we took entries, processed payouts and checked results before publishing. Congratulations to everyone who took home a cheque and everyone that competed in multiple rodeos.

A big thank you to all the committees who affiliated with us over the Easter Run. Without them, we cannot hold rodeos and we appreciate all the endless hours they dedicate to securing sponsorship, organising camping, manning the gates, running the bar and the steak sandwiches and all the unnoticed work that goes into holding a rodeo.

As an association, I think we should always be mindful that our committees consist of volunteers who give up their time to ensure the smooth running of events, and they deserve respect and appreciation for their efforts. Please give a hand if you can when attending Rodeos and look after their home grounds.

Looking to affiliate with the APRA for your next event? Head Office is open 8am-4pm Monday to Friday, and we are always happy to answer questions and assist with getting your rodeo up and running. CHAINSAW CHAINSAW The iconic

Long before the era of social media and even the existence of the internet, an Australian bucking bull managed to build a reputation, and furthermore a public fan base that remains unmatched. His name was Chainsaw. And fans would chant his name religiously at the top of their voices every time the superstar bucked. He was featured in XXXX beer advertising, sung about in songs, and known far and wide. “I just always thought that it was so neat that people who knew nothing about rodeo knew about this bull. You could run into people that would have no connection to rodeo at all, and they would all know of the bull called Chainsaw” said Daryl Mills.

Mills was one of the few cowboys to ever hear the whistle aboard the mighty bucker. An elite list of cowboy greats that includes Dave Johnston, Troy Dunn, Brendan Antone, Dean Pace, Mick Gray, Daryl Mills and Garry Longley. Both Daryl Mills and Troy Dunn would go on to become World Champion bull riders. “I think in comparison Chainsaw would have held his own with any bull anywhere at the time” acknowledged Troy Dunn. Troy was the only cowboy to cover him more than once, scoring on him 5 out of the 6 attempts. A controversial slap during that 6th attempt costing the cowboy a perfect 100% record on the greatest bull in APRA history.

Bought out of the Homebush saleyards in 1983, the wild little brahman cross bull would go on to win 8 straight APRA Bucking Bull of the Year titles A promising young bull rider, George Hempenstall and mentor Pat Condon, where at the sale looking for some new practice bulls Upon inspection of the day’s yarding there were two older bulls and a little creamy bull to choose from Pat instructed stock agent Norm Gavin to buy the two older bulls for him, and when the truck turned up to drop them off the little creamy bull ran off the truck with them “For $185 you can have the little fella” in a stock agent fashion Norm suggested to George

CHAINSAW CHAINSAW The iconic

In true cowboy thinking, George used his PO Box number, 327, for the little bull’s ear tag. Wild and unruly, he busted up and essentially knocked down a set of timber yards and quickly earnt himself the name of Chainsaw. It wasn’t long before Chainsaw had a practice pen reputation of unrideable. Wanting to pursue overseas opportunities and needing money, George sold him to John Condon, Pat’s son. John entrusted Chainsaw into the hands of well-respected stock contractor Garry McPhee and as they say, the rest is history

Garry promoted the bull from Merrijig to Sydney to Mount Isa and back and Australians from all over became intrigued by the unrideable bucking bull Always the last bull to buck at a rodeo, crowds would be in a frenzy chanting his name and eager to see his famed big twisting belly roll with all four feet high off the ground Almost as famous as his bucking style was Chainsaw’s victory lap after dislodging a cowboy He’d parade around the entire edge of the arena, head in the air, proud of the superstar he was Chainsaw passed away in 1996 but his legend forever lives on in Australian folklore

2.85 seconds to split the win in Round

“I wear my first gold buckle It took me so long to win, that I don’t think I’ll ever take it off This one, however, seems a bit more special It’s extremely satisfying being able to back the first one up with another one ”

“I use a Rattler Viper in a 9 0 size It’s a lot smaller size than most people use, but it suits me and my style. It’s littler in my small hands and I feel like I can control it better than other ropes and sizes

“Deadly is my biggest blessing. He’s only tiny, but nobody has ever told him as such That calf was super fast and I backed in knowing that he would pin his little ears back and run it down for me ”

“Nobody had caught up to that calf, let alone caught it, without breaking the barrier in previous rounds That calf was exactly what I needed to draw to keep me aggressive and not give me the option to back off ”

“Those pink boots are a little too bright for my liking, but I’d won a lot in them in the lead up to that run and I wasn’t about to chance my luck Now they’re our signature ”

“It was a softer round, but I didn’t have the luxury of playing it safe. I needed to win the round and to somehow get myself back into the average.”

JUNIOR SPOTLIGHT

On rodeo day, 17-year-old Cade Ferguson is a busy competitor Throwing his name in the draw for a long list of events at both ends of the arena. The kid from Cloncurry consistently enters the junior bull ride, junior steer ride, junior barrel race, junior breakaway roping, junior team roping, second division saddle bronc, second division bull ride and the open team roping. “And occaisionally the open rope and tie and open saddle bronc.” He’s cashed cheques in almost every one of those events this summer as he looks to make the most of his final year of junior competition. “I’ve been doing more rodeos than I’ve ever done, just being at so many has been a heap of fun and a great experience. A massive thankyou to my parents, family and mates. And thankyou to all of my sponsors. I couldn’t have done any of this without them all.”

ON WHAT’S HIS FAVOURTIE EVENT OF THAT LONG LIST...

“I can’t say i have a favourite event, but I definitely love the roughstock end more Just because the adrenalin rush of amking a good bull ride or bronc ride is one of the best feelings anyone could ever ask for.”

ON HIS SUPPORT NETWORK...

“There’s no way I’d be able to do as many events as I do without help Often Mum is warming up my horses while I’m riding roughstock or Dad is putting my rope on my bull while I’m roping. And my sponsors help me out with my entry fees. I’m extremely grateful to all those who have helped me throughout the years."

ON HOW HE’D LIKE TO FINISH OUT HIS LAST JUNIOR SEASON...

“My main goal for this season is to qualify for every event in the Junior National Finals. And then I’d like to try and win the average at the finals for as many events as I can ”

ON WHAT HE’S BEST AT...

“I don’t believe I have a best event. I try my hardest in each event I go in. And I love to do every single one of them.”

ON WHAT THE FUTURE MAY HOLD...

“I hope to eventually head to the USA to try my luck out over there.”
