RODEO NEWS JANUARY 2024

AGM RESULTS JUNIOR SPORTLIGHT CURRENT STANDINGS AUSTRALIAN PROFESSIONAL RODEO ASSOCIATION

FROM THE

COMPETITION BOARD

Hi all, I would like to start off by welcoming the newly appointed Event Directors to the Competition Board. Shane Kenny comes on as the Team Roping representative and Gene McDonald is the Steer Wrestling representative. I’d also like to thank the outgoing Event Directors, Cameron Milner, Brett Cross and Troy Wilkinson for their time and contributions while they served on the board. The 2024 rodeo season is well and truly underway, and it is great to see the outstanding number of entries at our rodeos. With a couple of our recent rodeos being postponed or delayed due to prevailing weather conditions, I would like to explain to our members that decisions made around these circumstances are extremely hard to make and are not made lightly. The safety of our animals is number one and the last thing we want to do is risk injuring any livestock, whether it be bucking stock or timed event horses. Our livestock welfare is a priority and always will be. I would like to thank all the existing and new committees for affiliating with the APRA for the 2024 season. It is great to see a number of rodeos already on the calendar for 2024. If you know or are speaking to a committee member, affiliate or promoter in your rodeo travels, please thank them for their efforts. Lastly, I would like to wish all competitors the best of luck this year. I believe it’s going to be a tough year to make the National Finals in all the events, so good luck and safe travels.

FROM

HEAD OFFICE

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas. The office will be back to full operation next week, and with the Christmas run in full swing down south, please note that entries cannot be taken if your membership is not up to date, or you have outstanding fines. If you have any queries about a fine/fee you have been issued, please feel free to give me a call. From 1st January, we will be enforcing any ineligible to enter messages within the system. If you are unable to make a rodeo, we can take cancel outs up to Monday 12pm prior to the rodeo. Once Draws are generated (Monday after 12pm) – you can turn out by notifying Head Office. You will incur the full entry fee for the events you entered plus a $10 turn out fee. The reason behind this is once the Draws are down and stock drawn, our Stock Contractors have allocated stock to you and the Committee is paying for that head of stock for you to participate. The committee is also paying officials. Your nomination has resulted in expense and organising efforts for you to compete. Life happens and to accommodate this, if you are turning out due to a medical condition or veterinary condition, a medical certificate or vet certificate must be supplied to Head Office – this will reduce your turnout fee to $30. With the office in full swing again – normal programming for Central Entries will be reinstated from Wednesday 10th January. Entry dates are published in the Rodeo News each month, on our website, and entries are advised each week on Facebook. We are looking forward to 2024 with exciting times in the Rodeo industry!

Barrel Racing 45.29 A tractor drag of the arena surface must be done at the commencement, completion and after a maximum of 10 Competitors (or less) in both the slack and performance. Ie; if there are 24 competitors drawn in the slack and 10 in the performance then a tractor drag must occur after 10 competitors (or less) in the slack and vice versa. This is the responsibility of the committee or stock contractor. If a tractor is unavailable then a similarly suitable implement is acceptable. Amend to: A tractor drag of the arena surface must be done at the commencement, completion and after a maximum of 7 Competitors (or less) in both the slack and performance. Ie; if there are 24 competitors drawn in the slack and 7 in the performance then a tractor drag must occur after 7 competitors (or less) in the slack and vice versa. This is the responsibility of the committee or stock contractor. If a tractor is unavailable then a similarly suitable implement is acceptable. Reason: Due to animal welfare issues with some arena’s being unsuitable to hold up to a maximum of 10 competitors prior to a rake, and either judges or event directors having to make a call at short notice to lessen the amount, a figure of 7 competitors will take out the potential backlash on officials to set up in favour of individuals. Due to the popularity of the barrel race with the crowd, this could potentially encourage committees or promoters to add more competitors in the performance rounds (for example if they add 14 to a performance then only one rake prior to this round and one rake after 7 is required). Overlap of other affiliates for a Novice barrel race are not to run on the same day or complex as an APRA event. Reason: There is already a rule that the Junior Barrel race is not to be run on the same course as the open course if this open event has not been completed. This is to ensure the ground has the best chance to stay consistent between rounds and all the way through to the end of the Open event. Although Novice barrel racing is popular and encouraging to both new and existing members we need to be mindful that ground conditions for the rodeo barrel racing has to be at it’s best for the safety and effectiveness of a professional level competition. Aussie, Aussie Aussie! Almost every Australian cowboy or cowgirl has dreamt, at least once or twice, about getting their chance to roll the dice in that little yellow arena in Las Vegas, America. Over the decades Australians have proved we have what it takes to climb the highest mountains in professional rodeo.

35 years ago, Dave Appleton paved the way as he etched his name into history as the 1988 PRCA Allround Cowboy World Champion and the first Australian to claim a world title. Glen O’Neill continued to provide the inspiration, becoming one of the greatest saddle bronc riders to strap spurs on in an era of Billy Etbauers and Dan Mortensens. The shining centerpiece of his trophy cabinet and phenomenal career, a 2002 PRCA Saddle Bronc Riding World Champion buckle. Over the years Australians have been treated to watching our homegrown cowboys chance it all for those 10 nights in Vegas. We’ve seen the likes of Scott Johnston, Adam Newman, Darren Clarke, and Sam Spreadborough repping the boxing kangaroo. And most recently, a kid from Mackay, called Ky Hamilton. This year we double dipped the treat jar and added Damien Brennan to the mix, making it two Aussies under those bright lights. By the grace of social media, the internet and the Cowboy Channel, we now get front row lounge chair seats to every single angle of the action and what a show they put on! We rode the rollercoaster with Ky, while Damien kept us strong and solid all week long. The Aussie duo managed simultaneous round wins, not once but twice. Damien (SB) climbed from the bottom of the pack to finish 5th overall, and 4th in the coveted Average at his very first NFR. Ky added the Bull Riding Average to his round wins and became only the third Australian in history to etch his name on a gold buckle as the 2023 PRCA Bull Riding World Champion!

“NEVER CUT YOURSELF SHORT. THE SKY’S THE LIMIT. SET BIG GOALS, THEY MIGHT SEEM UNREACHABLE AT THE TIME, BUT YOU’LL SURPRISE YOURSELF IF YOU STAY AFTER IT.” Damien Brennan on what he would tell the young cowboys and cowgirls in Australia aspiring to follow in his footsteps.

new season

NEW ROOKIES “GO HARD. GIVE IT YOUR ALL AND ENJOY THE PROCESS. AND MOST OF ALL, HAVE FUN ALONG THE WAY.” Brendon Crawley ~ 2023 Rookie Bareback Riding Champion

You only ever get one shot at becoming a rookie champion! Being a rookie is unique in terms of you’re only ever a rookie once, for one season. An APRA Rookie title is a special accolade, on the bucket list of many up-and-coming cowboys and cowgirls. And each new rodeo season it’s exciting to watch the rookie races unfold. We see runaway champions. We see neck and neck contests right down to the last rodeo of the season. But most importantly we see cowboys and cowgirls take their skills, talent and competitive spirits to the next level. Rookies travel and enter rodeos they’ve never been to before. They become competitors, pushed by the open competition and other rookies chasing the same goal. They learn, adapt and conquer. And they become the cowboys and cowgirls of tomorrow.

We asked some of the 2023 Rookie Champions what advice they would pass on to the Rookie class of 2024.... “DEDICATE 100% TO YOUR SPECIFIC EVENT/S. IF YOU PUT IN 110% AND TICK ALL THE BOXES YOU CAN TOWARDS SUCCESS, WIN LOSE OR DRAW AT THE END OF THE SEASON, YOU WILL BE FULFILLED COMPETITIVELY. AND THE BEST THING IS, IF YOU PUT ALL THAT WORK IN, EVEN IF YOU DON’T WIN, YOU HAVE A FULL SEASON’S WORTH OF EXPEREINCE TO WORK WITH NEXT SEASON.” Toby Hale ~ 2023 Rookie Hi Point Cowboy Champion

“KEEP YOUR FOCUS ON COMPETING AGAINST THE STOCK NOT THE RIDERS. WORRYING ABOUT HOW JOE BLOGS IS RIDING ISN’T GOING TO HELP YOU RIDE THE STOCK YOUR ON.” Michael Johnston~ 2023 Rookie Saddle Bronc Riding Champion

“DEFINITELY GO AT IT AND HAVE A GOOD CRACK. BUT DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF, YOUR HORSE OR YOUR EXPERIEMCE WITH YOUR FELLOW ROOKIES. Adanni Walker ~ 2023 Rookie Hi Point Cowgirl Champion

Junior Spotlight 16 year Molly Harper has been a force to reckon with in the Junior Barrel Racing this Junior season. From north Queensland to South Australia and in between, Molly and her horse Kisses have dominated everywhere they have been. Kisses was originally bought as a breakaway horse for Molly to learn to on back in 2021, but the dynamic duo from Victoria have become barrel racing sensations! ON HER IMPRESSIVE GREY MARE “KISSES’ AND HER STANDOUT DEBUT RODEO SEASON.... ON HER PLANS TO FINISH THE JUNIOR SEASON STRONG...

“To go to as many rodeos as I can and to keep my horse fit and healthy in hopes for winning the Pro Tour.”

“Kisses has been running for less than 12mths. We headed to Nebo for the first rodeo of the new junior season and I was unsure if I should run her or my other main horse. She’d only ever run at a rodeo twice before this. I ended up running her and she placed second. After that we won our first pro rodeo at Pittsworth. She continued to win and place at 11 out of 12 rodeos on our northern trip!”

HER FAVOURITE WIN SO FAR...

ON HER SIZEABLE LEAD IN THE JUNIOR BARREL RACING STANDINGS...

“I’m very surprised. But I’m excited to see how this season ends and hopefully we can hold our spot.”

“Either Cloncurry or Townsville. They are two of my favourtie rodeos to go to.”
