Anna Crisp took the win in the Ladies Breakaway Roping at Nebo Rodeo. The win not only banked the NSW cowgirl over $5000 in prizemoney, but also a qualification to represent Nebo Rodeo at the coveted Rope for the Crown event in Las Vegas in December. Longtime supporter of breakaway roping, Katie B proudly sponsored the winner with an extra $1000 and a clothing package for the international event. Thankyou Katie and good luck in December Anna.

COMPETITION BOARD FROM THE

Congratulations to all the junior competitors who have made the junior finals and to their parents for making this possible. It is the 9th year that we have been running the junior finals in Emerald. We are excited that they have gone from strength to strength, and we look forward to seeing you all here in June, to crown our new Junior Australian Champions Thanks to the committees that have supported the juniors and run all the junior events at their rodeos, they are the future of our sport, and we need to encourage committees that don’t run junior events to help support our future of rodeo. It is great to see so many of our home-grown junior competitors mixing it with the best of the business and to the ones that are flying the Australian Flag overseas.

Big congratulations to Nebo rodeo and their committee on another outstanding rodeo. Ten years ago they changed to APRA, changed from an outdoor arena to an undercover arena, and the crowd and prize money just keeps getting bigger and better every year. This has been very driven by two past and present competing cowboys, Glen and Jarrod, and it is a credit to you both and your committee.

With times getting hard for committees, I encourage our members to get on their local committees or committees near them. We need some new faces on them as the older committee members are stepping out of it, which are leaving big holes, and this will take an effect on the rodeos whether they can run or not.

Remember we need our members input into the APRA so we can run a good Association, so if you have anything to offer get in contact with any of our directors.

As the rodeos are headed north, safe travels down the road to those that are heading to Queensland.

Shane Kenny

The Online Member Portal has arrived It has been well received in the preliminary testing phase, and we invite you to join up and start enjoying online entries Please use the email which is attached to your Membership to sign up, make sure you verify your email (check your junk/spam folder for the verification email), then simply enter your entries with preferences if applicable, then continue to the cart for payment. You will receive a receipt for your records.

Many thanks to the members who have put their hand up to be the first to try the portal, we really appreciate your time and feedback. The online Member Portal was a huge project, and we thank Xelleron for developing the program, Jill Lyons and Kayla Grayson for the project set up and initial ideas, and Kayla who has invested many, many hours in developing, designing and testing the portal for the APRA. Thank you to you all.

The main advantages of entering online;

80 YEARS

Jack StantonRemembers Remembers

Jack Stanton was born at Tamworth, NSW in 1907.

This is an interview he did for the Scone Advocate, Friday, March 22, 1946

I first remember life on the Barnard River, where my Mum and Dad had a selection The home was erected on the riverbank We had no tank and I can remember Mum washing in the shade of a big oak It was a quiet place, and a packhorse mail came through from Nundle to Glenrock twice a week. At times the mailman had two packhorses, one for the mail and the other for the rum. Someone would be getting married or turning twenty-one, that would be the excuse.

There must have been a lot of people down the Barnard, aged 21, because we never saw the parson go down. Dingo Cook was one who used to call on us. His job was to poke about on the selections with his .32 (rifle) and shoot the dingoes and they say he never missed. He used to tell us kids about the big tin of mustard he saw once; it proved to be a square tank painted for advertising purposes to resemble the old Keen's mustard tin Dingo fell for it and so did we

Mr Wright, the owner of Barry Station, a place that joined ours, had two small boys who couldn't ride, so we got two bags made and used to pack the boys over the range to Nundle I just couldn't remember how the bags were made, but I consider the kids must have been made of the old pioneering stuff to take the jolts and jars of a packhorse for a trip of 20 miles. My brother Les and I were more fortunate; we had a good pony each, and I think we learned to ride before we learned to walk, as we both turned out better riders than we did hikers. When bullock and buckjump riding started in this part of the country, we were able to take our part with a fair run of success.

In 1930 I won the NSW bullock-riding championship, worth 25 guineas and a 15 guineas cup and championship sash; 32 riders took part in this contest and three states were represented. Myself and Ted Rushbrook, a good rider from Tamworth, were the only riders to leave the chute with one hand free; the remaining 29 rode with both hands down, and over half of them were bucked off The next year I won the same event again when 26 riders took part The standard of riding had changed in just 12 months only two riders used both hands and only six were thrown This event was held at Armidale The yards and chutes were erected in the middle of the arena The chute faced the grandstand and was wide enough for two bullocks. Some of the bullocks turned in the chute, and we had to let them back into the yard and hunt them up again. It was a slow job with a single chute in those days, but as the game was a novelty to the spectators, all eyes used to focus on the one big centre act, and they would wait patiently until the old bovril (bullock) came bucking out.

Bucking events were slow, trees or posts used to be erected to tie the horses to at some arenas, whilst at some places a man would have to hold while his mate saddled and mounted. Some horses were harder to hold than they were to ride, and being too many ‘guns’ for the holder, would get away and spill their bucking energy with the saddle It was all part of the performance We boasted to have the best horse holders in the world (Queensland thrown in) Col Schutes, Ben Singleton, Hilton McTaggart, and Frank Maynard were men who could hold any horse by the head I wanted to back Hilton McTaggart one time for ten pounds to hold a certain outlaw till I saddled him and they could put two cattle dogs on to him whilst we were in action, but the guy backed down Bridles or head stalls were used with two reins, riders supplied their own gear On some horses we used short flanks, whilst on some we used long flanks. One could always trust his mate to keep the tickler tight.

80 YEARS

We supplied our own buckers and, believe me, they, were the goods Cecil Pearce and Colin Bell often came down from Queensland with their horses, Rolling Pin, Bedourie, The Hawk and Cyclone, and they rode with a good deal of success My most successful years were from 1930 to ‘35 I was selected in '35 to go to Africa to ride under contract to the well-known showmen, David T Meekin and Fred Yeoman After returning I gave the game away from a professional point of view, and just rode at carnivals near to home I have won 103 contests which may be a record. I have no record of the total amount of prizemoney, but most of the contests were small ones at day sports and country shows. What may be another record is, that I have won six buckjumping contests straight - the Upper Hunter Championship at Scone, which may have been the hardest contest to win in the northern line. Dan Edwards was second, and, I think, Cecil Pearce third. Snowy Thompson, of Wembley fame, was amongst the contestants.

I am often asked who was the best rider ten years ago. I could name twelve riders who could win, beating one another in turn, and by saying that, Joe Atkinson may have been and would be as far as I would be game to venture He was an all-round, smart little horsemen who stood up to many years of hard riding and was an accomplished showman with whip and rope Twenty years ago, Tom Handley may have been and today, there are so many riders with equal ability, it would be beyond me to make a choice For raking high, Lance Skuthorpe has the noble art and I give him the belt for raking I for one don’t believe in trying to rake; it’s impossible to rake a good bucking horse or bullock I say here and now that when a good bucker turns it on, he’ll show his supremacy over man under any conditions that governed the rules of bush carnivals or rodeo. I will refer you to reference the old original chestnut, Rocky Ned, and the Streak, the well-known bucking stag; at their best, no rider had a chance. Many riders say they were never thrown. Well, I would suggest more water with it.

Today, the game has improved and will still improve to a far greater thing. We who blazed the track can now take a seat on the rails and tell you how good we were, but before I get told to shut up, my last shot for this issue is to advise every rough rider in the game to do the right thing for himself and his fellow competitors by becoming a member of the Roughriders’ Association The forming of this Association is the greatest step that riders have ever made Your single voice is no good The voice of the Association will be your voice for a fair go in a game that should be fair

Jack Stanton was member number 2 when the Australian Rough Riders’ Association (ARRA) was formed in Sydney in 1944. (Gib Bloxsome was member number 1). Jack was from Tamworth, NSW, and represented Australia in Africa in 1935 when he was the Australian Buckjump Champion.

He was a strong Advocate for the ARRA and was partly responsible for the best riders in the country joining the Association at the time. He was known as one of the best horse breakers of his time and taught many others the skills of breaking and riding rough horses. He spent many years as a drover throughout New South Wales and Queensland. His son, John Stanton of Macksville, NSW, became a champion rider and is perhaps the best known and most successful campdraft competitor in Australia.

“My Saddle here is only new I’d only done one rodeo in it before the NFR, so I had to quickly adjust to the feel of it ”

“This bronc Classic Cowboy is one of the nicest horses to ride and it’s always a pleasure to see your name beside him every time I’ve drawn him, I’ve won the event on him.”

The broken thumb from a mid-NFR bull riding incident saw Cameron make the decision to turn his last two bulls out and concentrate on saving his riding hand for the Saddle Bronc Riding. A decision which helped earn him a gold buckle.
