Our training pathway has been created to nurture the musical development of Australia’s finest young instrumentalists across metropolitan and regional Australia: from the emerging, gifted, school-aged students, to those on the verge of a professional career. AYO presents tailored training and performance programs each year for aspiring musicians, composers, recording engineers, orchestra managers and music journalists aged 12 to 30 years. AYO occupies a special place in the musical culture of Australia, where one generation of brilliant musicians inspires the next, where aspiring musicians get a taste of life as professional musicians, and where like-minded individuals from all over the country gather for intense periods to learn from each other, study and perform. AYO YOUNG SYMPHONISTS AYO Young Symphonists is where the musical journey of AYO begins. Based on the wisdom that great music is the best source of inspiration and learning for any musician, this program opens a window onto the joy of symphonic music-making. You’ll join with the best young musicians of your own age from around Australia to experience the satisfaction of playing together and taking your musical skills to a whole new level. You’ll also work with directors and tutors who are among Australia’s most respected musicians, sparking your enthusiasm for making music that will continue to inspire you and make you want more. BRETT KELLY Music Director Australian Youth Orchestra alumnus, Brett Kelly has a successful career as Principal Trombonist of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and regularly conducts leading Australian and New Zealand symphony orchestras. Brett has been a core member of three influential Australian contemporary music ensembles. He has been the featured conductor on numerous CD recordings and conducted the orchestral scores of many international films.

AYO NATIONAL MUSIC CAMP AYO National Music Camp is a transforming experience. From the day you arrive it is an exciting whirl of new faces and first encounters with the best young Australian players. Over the next two weeks each day brings exciting discoveries and the buzz never stops. With fabulous music at its heart and a team of musical leaders of international standing to inspire you, you’ll experience a musical summer of exhilarating challenges, exuberant camaraderie and uplifting performances. It’s full-on, but once you’ve had a taste of it, you’ll know why a large number of musicians in Australia rate AYO National Music Camp as the place that inspired them most deeply. ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE LI-WEI QIN Cello Li-Wei Qin appears all over the world as a soloist and chamber musician, and is a guest professor at Shanghai and Central Conservatory of Music in China. Li-Wei won the First Prize in the prestigious 2001 Naumburg Competition in New York, and was awarded the Silver Medal at the 11th Tchaikovsky International Competition. Raised in Melbourne, he received the Young Australian of the Year Award in 2002. DAVID ELTON Trumpet David Elton joined the Sydney Symphony as Principal Trumpet in 2012. He is a founding member of the Australian Brass Quintet, and is committed to teaching the next generation of musicians having held teaching positions and presenting masterclasses in Australia and internationally. David was also a first prize winner at the International Trumpet Guild’s Solo Competition held in the USA.

AYO NATIONAL MUSIC CAMP ORCHESTRAL PROGRAM TWO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAS AND A STRING CHAMBER ORCHESTRA WILL PERFORM UNFORGETTABLE CONCERTS INSPIRED BY MUSICAL LEADERS OF INTERNATIONAL STANDING. ELIM CHAN Conductor Elim Chan became the first female winner of the Donatella Flick LSO Conducting Competition in 2014 and is currently the Assistant Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. From the 2017/18 season she will be the Chief Conductor of Sweden’s NorrlandsOperan. Prior to her visit to Australia Elim will debut with the Mariinsky Orchestra, the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra, and make her North American debut with Detroit Symphony.

As a member of the London Symphony Orchestra and Fiorini piano trio Belinda McFarlane performs throughout the world. She appears as an orchestral and chamber music coach for the Australian Youth Orchestra and for the LSO, and as guest lecturer at the University of Queensland. As a member of the Australian World Orchestra she is also their Youth Education Advisor. Belinda was Concertmaster of the AYO on its acclaimed Bicentennial tour.
Dietrich Paredes is the Music Director of the Caracas Youth Orchestra, one of the flagship orchestras from El Sistema, Venezuela’s celebrated movement of youth orchestras. As a distinguished violinist he has performed with the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra and was Concertmaster of the Youth Orchestra of the Americas. Dietrich is one of the most promising young maestros to emerge from Venezuela and regularly conducts orchestras throughout Europe and America.

COMPOSITION
Producing the sound of orchestras and ensembles for broadcast and recording is an art. This program equips you with the technical know-how that is essential for sound production and mixing. You’ll also learn interview and editing techniques associated with broadcasts. It is a unique hands-on experience leading to professional quality outcomes.
Some say composing can be a lonely profession but for these two weeks it’s exactly the opposite: you’ll be among colleagues and friends in a shared endeavour of music-making. With an emphasis on practical performance outcomes, you’ll see your work come to life as it is rehearsed and performed by the musicians and tutors of the Orchestral Program.

AUSTRALIAN YOUTH ORCHESTRA The AYO February and July Seasons will give you a taste of the rich possibilities of today’s world of orchestral music-making. Alongside the country’s other best young musicians, you’ll work with exciting international musical leaders on inspiring repertoire in prestigious Australian venues. In 2017, the Australian Youth Orchestra celebrates its 60th anniversary. In February, you’ll perform a concert at the historic Sydney Town Hall the site of AYO’s first concert in 1957 before going on to work with Nigel Westlake and Lior on their award-winning collaboration, Compassion.

AYO JULY SEASON NIGEL WESTLAKE Conductor Nigel Westlake’s compositions have earned numerous accolades, including the Gold Medal at the New York International Radio Festival and 15 APRA awards in the screen and art music categories. Compassion, written in collaboration with Lior, won the Aria Award for Best Classical Album in 2014. He made his conducting debut with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in 1997 and has since conducted performances and recordings of his own works with all the major symphony orchestras in Australia. LIOR Soloist
ANDREW GOURLAY Conductor Andrew Gourlay is the Music Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León, and previously Assistant Conductor to Sir Mark Elder and the Hallé Orchestra. A trombonist and pianist by training, he studied conducting at the Royal College of Music, and performed with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, and many of the UK’s leading orchestras. In 2010, Andrew won first prize at Cadaques International Conducting Competition, resulting in him securing concerts with 29 orchestras around the world. Lior is one of Australia’s most successful independent artists. Critically acclaimed as a songwriter and performer, he is the winner of two ARIAs and an APRA award. He is a regular performer at festivals both in Australia and internationally collaborating with the likes of SIA, Passenger, Joseph Tawardos and of course Nigel Westlake on Compassion. In 2015, Lior was the sole Australian artist to perform at the 100 year anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli.

AYO CHAMBER PLAYERS AYO CHAMBER PLAYERS OFFERS YOU INTENSIVE ENSEMBLE TRAINING IN A CREATIVE ENVIRONMENT THAT WILL BOTH ENHANCE AND INSPIRE YOUR DEVELOPMENT AS A CHAMBER MUSICIAN. You can apply for this program as an individual musician or as an established ensemble. Integrated into the Musica Viva Festival in 2017, you’ll be immersed in an international celebration of chamber music and will have the opportunity to learn from and work with some of the world’s greatest chamber musicians. Be inspired by artist-in-residence Lambert Orkis, who has achieved international recognition as a chamber musician appearing worldwide with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter since 1988 and performing recitals with cellist
Mstislav Rostropovich for more than eleven years. Joining the program will also be the Elias String Quartet, who are internationally acclaimed as one of the leading ensembles of their generation, and the brilliant Zuckerman Trio. The line-up of world-class musicians involved attests to the high standards of the AYO Chamber Player experience. Challenge yourself to take your performance skills to the next level, and gain a true insight into being a professional musician and the great personal rewards that you can only get from being in a professional orchestral environment. Wind instrument applicants are encouraged to audition on their respective doubling instruments, e.g. piccolo, cor anglais, E-flat clarinet, bass clarinet, contrabassoon. AYO may be able to assist you in sourcing these instruments for the purpose of the audition. 3. APPLY ONLINE Apply online at ayo.com.au Applications for 2017 programs are open 30 May to 17 June 2016. Applications for Arts Administration and Composition programs close on 12 August 2016. A non-refundable application fee of $88 is charged to each applicant to cover administration and processing costs. Only one application fee is required, regardless of how many programs you wish to apply for or how many instruments you apply on.
There will be no live auditions for harp, piano or existing chamber ensembles. All other instrumental applicants must be available to attend an audition in the city of your choice. Telephone interviews will be conducted for the Arts Administration programs. Audition and interview requirements are on page 25, and can also be found online along with the audition and interview schedule for each state. 5. RECEIVE AN OFFER Audition and interview results will be emailed to applicants and first round offers released on 5 October 2016. Program Fees Full payment of your fee(s) is required upon confirmation of acceptance of each program following a successful audition and/or interview and program offer. Withdrawal from any program after your acceptance for any reason other than certified medical grounds will result in the forfeit of fees at the rate of $50 per calendar month from 30 November 2016 for withdrawal from AYO National Music Camp, or 31 December 2016 for all other programs. If withdrawal occurs less than four weeks prior to a program commencing then the full fee may be forfeited. Payment Plan AYO is able to assist you with paying your fees by setting up a payment plan. Full details will be sent out with program offers following a successful audition. 6. APPLY FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AND SCHOLARSHIPS Successful applicants can apply for financial assistance and scholarships from 5 October to 18 November 2016. See page 24 for further details.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE + SCHOLARSHIPS We have a generous financial assistance program which helps participants offset the program fees and travel costs associated with attending AYO programs. Financial assistance is open to all successful applicants and is meanstested to ensure those with the greatest need receive assistance. Full details of how to apply for financial assistance will be emailed with offers following a successful audition or interview. AYO is pleased to offer three scholarships for orchestral musicians to support their participation in AYO programs, as well as to pursue additional development opportunities. The Accenture Scholarship, generously donated by our Principal Sponsor and Digital Partner, is open to all successful applicants of the AYO February and July Seasons. The Ernest V Llewellyn Memorial Fund and The Richard Pollett Memorial Award are open to both AYO and non-AYO musicians.

ACCENTURE SCHOLARSHIP The Australian Youth Orchestra’s Principal Sponsor and Digital Partner, Accenture, offers a $10,000 cash scholarship to an outstanding musician selected for the Australian Youth Orchestra. This scholarship will provide financial support for the recipient to participate in AYO’s programs in 2017 and to pursue further study, travel, or instrument acquisition. The scholarship is awarded through a competitive application process that includes a recorded audition together with a written case for support. THE ERNEST V. LLEWELLYN MEMORIAL FUND ANNUAL AWARDS FOR STRING PLAYERS Following Ernest V. Llewellyn’s death in 1982 this Fund was established by a group of his friends and colleagues to honour his life and work, and has as its principal objective the advancement of string playing in Australia. Annual awards provide support for young
string players wishing to undertake advanced studies, or to attend master classes, workshops or seminars such as AYO programs, in Australia and overseas. You do not need to be an applicant or participant in AYO programs to apply. THE RICHARD POLLETT MEMORIAL AWARD Richard Pollett, a former violinist of the Australian Youth Orchestra, died tragically in a road accident on 27 September 2011. He was 25. The Richard Pollett Memorial Award has been established by Richard’s family and close friends in association with the Australian Youth Orchestra to honour his memory. Discretionary awards will be made annually to provide support and encouragement to young violinists who display outstanding personal and musical attributes. AUDITION + INTERVIEW REQUIREMENTS LIVE AUDITIONS FOR INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAMS All instrumentalists are required to attend a live audition in order to be eligible for 2017 AYO programs, with the exception of piano, harp and established chamber ensembles. Applicants are required to prepare and perform a set of AYO orchestral excerpts. These excerpts will be available for download from the AYO website upon completion of the application and payment process. In addition, all applicants (except percussion and timpani) are required to perform a short piece of your own choice, without an accompanist. It is recommended that applicants choose a work, or section of a work, which addresses the following points: / clearly demonstrates the applicant’s technical proficiency / emphasises the applicant’s musicianship / perform contrasting musical material / no more than 5 minutes in length Applicants are not required to perform complete works in their audition, a carefully selected excerpt of a longer piece is acceptable. Due to time constraints, the audition panel may elect to hear only part of the applicant’s piece. Applicants are strongly advised to check the selection of their piece with their teacher. AYO will make an audio-visual recording of all live auditions for archival purposes.
