WELCOME The Australian Youth Orchestra is one of the world’s most prestigious and innovative training organisations for young pre-professional musicians. Our training pathway has been created to nurture the musical development of Australia’s finest young instrumentalists across metropolitan and regional Australia: from the emerging, gifted, school-aged student, to those on the verge of a professional career. AYO presents tailored training and performance programs each year for aspiring musicians, composers, recording engineers, orchestra managers and music journalists aged 12 to 30 years. AYO occupies a special place in the musical culture of Australia, where one generation of brilliant musicians inspires the next, where aspiring musicians get a taste of life as professional musicians, and where like-minded individuals from all over the country gather for intense periods to learn from each other, study and perform. On the world stage, AYO is a cultural ambassador for Australia undertaking no fewer than 21 international tours across Europe, Asia and America; performing in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls and festivals, and working with some of the world’s leading conductors and soloists including Sir Charles Mackerras, Christoph Eschenbach, Sir Mark Elder, Simone Young, soprano Lisa Gasteen, and violinists Joshua Bell and Ray Chen. In 2016, the orchestra will embark on its 22nd tour, joined by Austrian conductor Manfred Honeck and pianist Hélène Grimaud with performances in Europe, China and Australia. Today, more than 65% of musicians working in Australian orchestras are AYO alumni and countless AYO alumni are members of the finest professional orchestras worldwide.

AYO YOUNG SYMPHONISTS Roger Benedict MUSIC DIRECTOR Roger Benedict has held the position of Principal Viola with both the Sydney Symphony and London’s Philharmonia Orchestra, and appears frequently as viola soloist. In addition to regular conducting engagements with the Sydney Symphony, he has also collaborated with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, the UK’s National Youth Orchestra and Southbank Sinfonia (London). A devoted orchestral trainer, Roger is Artistic Director of the Sydney Symphony Fellowship Program, and has coached the European Union Youth Orchestra and conducted orchestras at the Sydney Conservatorium and the Australian National Academy of Music.

ORCHESTRAL PROGRAM The program encompasses all aspects of the preparation and rehearsal of full-scale symphonic or chamber orchestra repertoire. You will perform in one of the two full symphony orchestras or the string chamber orchestra. The culminating concerts are sure to bring the house down, and the buzz of it will stay with you forever.

Scottish born classical accordionist James Crabb’s Genevieve Lacey is a multiple award winning recorder repertoire ranges from original contemporary works virtuoso, serial collaborator and artistic director (Four Winds to transcriptions from Baroque to the 21st Century. Genevieve has a substantial recording catalogue and a high-profile career as soloist with orchestras and ensembles around the world, performing music spanning ten centuries, with artists as diverse as Danish pipe and tabor player Poul Høxbro, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Paul Kelly (Conversations with Ghosts), London filmmaker Marc Silver (en masse), big hART(Namatjira) and Black Arm Band/Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (ngangwurra means heart).
Conductors Brad Cohen CONDUCTOR Brad Cohen is recognised as a leading interpreter of the bel canto repertoire, conducting the operas of Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini internationally and on disc. Brad works extensively with contemporary operatic composers and pursues an active symphonic conducting career, having conducted orchestras including MSO, WASO, London Philharmonic, Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Brad is Artistic Director of West Australian Opera, where in 2015 he conducts Faust. In 2015 he returns to Opera Holland Park for Flight.
Erik Nielsen CONDUCTOR Iowa native Erik Nielsen studied conducting at the Curtis Institute of Music and received his bachelor’s degree as a double-major in oboe and harp at The Juilliard School. He joined the Frankfurt Opera in 2002, where he was Kapellmeister from 2008 until 2012. He will take up the positions of Chief Conductor of Bilbao Symphony Orchestra in September 2015 and Music Director of the Theater Basel with effect from the 2016/17 season. Recent and future engagements include London, New York, Vienna, Paris, Dresden, Zurich, Budapest, and the Bregenz Festival in a wide repertoire ranging from Handel to Henze.

CHAMBER ORCHESTRA DIRECTOR
Violinist Monica Curro is currently in her 18th year as Assistant Principal 2nd Violin of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and was previously a core member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra for 5 years. She graduated with a BMus from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in 1987 and completed a Masters Degree at Michigan State University in 1991, studying with Walter Verdehr. She has also played with Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. In 2009 Monica was invited as the only Australian to play in the World Orchestra for Peace conducted by Valery Gergiev for concerts in Poland and Sweden. She joined them in 2010 for concerts in London and Salzburg, in Abu Dhabi for 2011, in New York and Chicago for 2012, and in London for 2014. She is a founding member of contemporary chamber ensemble PLEXUS which has commissioned over 70 composers and premiered 22 new works in 2014. When

SOUND PRODUCTION
For young composers, there can be few experiences more powerful than the engagement with the talents gathered at AYO National Music Camp. With its emphasis on practical performance outcomes, this program provides a fantastic opportunity for the aspiring composer.
This unique program looks at music production as well as interview technique and editing associated with broadcasts. The participants record all AYO National Music Camp concerts and work closely with the ABC for the concert broadcasts.

Alexandre Bloch CONDUCTOR
Manfred Honeck, Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since 2008, received his musical education in his native Austria. Several years as member of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera have given his conducting a distinctive stamp. He began his career as assistant of Claudio Abbado in Vienna. After early posts in Zurich, Oslo and Leipzig he became Music Director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and, subsequently, the Staatsoper Stuttgart. Much acclaimed for his successful work in Pittsburgh, he is also in high demand as guest conductor and has conducted the leading orchestras around the globe.
Admired for his enthusiasm and energy, Alexandre Bloch was recently appointed Principal Guest Conductor of Düsseldorf Symphoniker. The French Conductor came to international attention as winner of Donatella Flick’s LSO Conducting Competition in October 2012. In the 14/15 season Alexandre Bloch made a number of debuts including Seoul Philharmonic, Düsseldorf Symphony and Norwegian Radio. Following highly successful debuts across the 13/14 season he returned to Royal Northern Sinfonia, BBCNOW, Ulster Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, Poznan Philharmonic, Musikollegium Winterthur and NWD Philharmonie. Forthcoming plans include returns to the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.
Hélène Grimaud PIANO Hélène Grimaud is undoubtedly a multifaceted artist. Her deep dedication to her musical career, both in performances and recordings, is reflected and reciprocally amplified by the scope and depth of her environmental and literary pursuits. Throughout this season, orchestral engagements include her return to the Berlin Philharmonic with Valery Gergiev, Orchestre national de Lyon with Leonard Slatkin and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra with Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Grimaud is also an ardent and committed chamber musician who performs frequently at the most prestigious festivals and cultural events with a wide range of musical collaborators. Repertoire

AYO CHAMBER PLAYERS One of the peak programs for players seriously engaged in chamber music. AYO Chamber Players offers the opportunity to learn from and work with some of the world’s greatest chamber musicians.

In 2016, AYO Chamber Players will be directed by two outstanding Australian ensembles, the Goldner String Quartet and PLEXUS. Together these ensembles offer a vast range of experience and repertoire for aspiring chamber musicians to draw upon.
PLEXUS PLEXUS features three of Australia’s most vibrant and versatile musicians, Monica Curro (violin), Philip Arkinstall (clarinet), and Stefan Cassomenos (piano). The name PLEXUS reflects this ensemble’s devotion to supporting and engaging an ever-growing network of exceptional artists across a variety of disciplines. PLEXUS is dedicated to the commissioning and presentation of new music and collaborations. Since launching in 2014, PLEXUS has commissioned over 70 composers, including 22 world premieres in 2014, and 23 world premieres in 2015, at venues including the Melbourne Recital Centre and Federation Square.
The Goldner String Quartet The Goldner String Quartet has widespread and longstanding recognition for excellence, as not only Australia’s pre-eminent string quartet but as an ensemble of international significance. All members have occupied principal positions in organisations such as the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Australian Chamber Orchestra. Since its London debut at Wigmore Hall in 1997 the Goldner String Quartet has regularly returned to London and major festivals in the UK, Europe and the Asia Pacific region. In 2001 the Quartet made its American debut. Closer to home, the Goldner String Quartet has performed in China, Korea, Singapore and Brunei and has undertaken several extensive tours of New Zealand. The Goldners are strongly committed to teaching the next generation of string quartets. When

MSO STRING FELLOWSHIPS
This annual concert project has become a season highlight in Hobart seeing AYO musicians join with the full Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra to perform exciting works for a large scale orchestra.
In two stages, the MSO String Fellowships begin with an intensive week of one-on-one coaching from your Melbourne Symphony Orchestra mentor, including concerto and excerpt workshops and professional development sessions, culminating in an audition for casual engagement with the MSO. Following a successful casual audition selected Fellows will be invited to participate in stage two, being engaged by the MSO for up to three weeks work as a casual musician.

Choose your program(s) AYO recommends that you apply for all programs that you are eligible and available for. Decide which instrument(s) You may audition on more than one instrument. The following instruments are eligible: flute, piccolo, oboe, cor anglais, clarinet, E-flat clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, contrabassoon, horn, trumpet, tenor trombone, bass trombone, tuba, percussion, timpani, harp*, piano*, violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Wind instrument applicants are encouraged to audition on their respective doubling instruments, e.g. piccolo, cor anglais, E-flat clarinet, bass clarinet, contrabassoon. AYO may be able to assist you in sourcing these instruments for the purpose of the audition.

Upon completion of the online application and payment process orchestral excerpts and portfolio requirements will be available to you. Instrumental applicants must be available to attend an audition in the city of your choice.

Receive an offer Audition and interview results will be emailed to applicants and first round offers released on 6 October 2015. Program Fees Full payment of your fee(s) are required upon confirmation of acceptance of each program following a successful audition and/or interview and program offer. Withdrawal from any program after your acceptance, for any reason other than certified medical grounds, may result in the forfeit of fees at the rate of $50 per calendar month from 30 November 2015 for withdrawal from AYO National Music Camp or 31 December 2015 for all other programs. If withdrawal occurs less than four weeks prior to a program commencing then the full fee may be forfeited. Payment Plan

Apply for financial assistance and scholarships Successful applicants can apply for financial assistance and scholarships from 6 October to 20 November 2015. See page 28 for further details. 25
Audition and interview requirements Live auditions for instrumental programs All instrumentalists are required to attend a live audition in order to be eligible for 2016 AYO programs, with the exception of piano and harp applicants. Applicants are required to prepare and perform a set of AYO orchestral excerpts. These excerpts will be available for download from the AYO website upon completion of the application and payment process. The sooner you apply, the sooner you will receive your excerpts. In addition, all applicants (except percussion and timpani) are required to perform a short piece of your own choice, without an accompanist. It is recommended that applicants choose a work, or section of a work, which addresses the following points: / Clearly demonstrates the applicant’s technical proficiency / Emphasises the applicant’s musicianship / Perform contrasting musical material / No more than 5 minutes in length Applicants are not required to perform complete works, a carefully selected passage of a longer piece is acceptable. Due to time constraints, the audition panel may elect to hear only part of the applicant’s piece. Applicants are strongly advised to check the selection of their piece with their teacher. AYO will make an audio-visual recording of all live auditions for archival purposes.

Non-Instrumental Programs
Three categories of applicants are eligible to submit recorded auditions:
Applicants for Orchestral Management, Words About Music, Sound Production and Composition programs at AYO National Music Camp are required to submit a portfolio, including CV, written materials and scores etc.
/ All piano and harp applicants must submit an audio-visual recorded audition / String quartets, wind quintets and piano trios applying for AYO Chamber Players must submit an audio-visual recording of a recent performance, or a recording made specifically for the 2016 AYO audition process / Applicants from regional areas, or those who are unable to audition on their scheduled day for certified medical reasons, may submit an audiovisual recorded audition If you are unable to audition on your instrument’s scheduled day please contact AYO as soon as possible to confirm details for submitting a recorded audition. Approval to submit a recorded audition is at the discretion of AYO. Details on how to prepare and submit your recording will be available for download from the AYO website upon completion of the application and payment process. It is essential that the recording of your own choice piece is unaccompanied and specifically recorded for the 2016 AYO audition process. Applicants are advised to seek advice on how best to make an effective and successful recording. It is in your best interests to provide the high quality recording possible to ensure you are accurately assessed. The final date for receipt of all recorded auditions is Friday 7 August 2015. Materials received after this date will not be eligible for consideration.

Financial assistance and scholarships The AYO has a generous financial assistance program which offers financial assistance and scholarships to help participants offset registration fees and travel costs associated with attending AYO programs. All applications for financial assistance are means-tested. Full details of how to apply for financial assistance will be emailed with offers following a successful audition.

This scholarship will provide financial support Ian and Cass George for the recipient to participate in AYO’s programs in Louise Gourlay OAM 2016 and to pursue further study, travel, or instrument Peter and Faye Grant acquisition. The scholarship is awarded through a David Greatorex AO and Deirdre Greatorex competitive application process that includes a recorded Kenneth Hunt Memorial Fund audition together with a written case for support. Henry Jacono Memorial Fund The Ernest V. Llewellyn Memorial Fund Annual Awards Christopher John for string players Klavier Music Association Inc. Following Ernest V. Llewellyn’s death in 1982 this Fund Klein Family Foundation was established by a group of his friends and colleagues Professor Kwong Lee Dow AO to honour his life and work, and has as its principal Ernest Llewelyn Award objective the advancement of string playing in Australia. The Lydia Morberger Piano Trust Annual awards provide support for young string players Simon and Leonie Marks wishing to undertake advanced studies, or to attend master classes, workshops or seminars such as AYO Alan McCormack and Elizabeth Brand programs, in Australia and overseas. Dr George Michell AM The Richard Pollett Memorial Award Mike Mulvihill National Music Camp Trust Richard Pollett, a former violinist of the Australian Gerard Patacca Youth Orchestra, died tragically in a road accident on 27 September 2011. He was 25. The Richard Pollett Rosemary and Gwenneth Pryor Memorial Award has been established by Richard’s The Standish Roberts Trumpet Scholarship family and close friends in association with the Australian Fe Ross in memory of Deborah Lander Youth Orchestra to honour his memory. Discretionary Peter Seymour Memorial Fund awards will be made annually to provide support and encouragement to young violinists who display outstanding Dr Robyn Smiles Friends of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra personal and musical attributes.
