Harr Motor Group Proposing Auto Body Shop Expansion in Worcester, MA by Katherine Hamilton, Worcester Business Journal
Harr Motor Group on Gold Star Boulevard in Worcester, MA, is hoping to expand with a new auto body shop on Pullman Street, according to an application submitted to the Worcester Planning Board. The space at 23 Pullman St. is owned by Bigelow Electric Company, Inc., also known as BigPower, a family-owned electro-mechanical facility founded in 1914. Bigelow Electric is downsizing but will remain in the building on Pullman Street as a tenant of Harr, said President Scott Bigelow in a phone interview. The electric company currently has a purchase and sale agreement with Harr, according to Bigelow. “It’s an opportunity for us as a local company to hit the reboot button, and it’s an opportunity for Harr to have a state-of-the-art facility,” Bigelow said, explaining that most of his company’s work is in the field now, so there’s a decreasing need for on-site facility space. Bigelow Electric, which was
then registered as Warren & Bigelow Electric Co., bought the site in 1988, according to the Worcester city assessors’ data. The property was assessed at $592,500 in 2021. In its present condition, the 66,449-square foot industrial property contains space for two tenants, and includes parking, loading and outdoor equipment storage, per the application. The building is 17,738 square feet. In a project impact statement, Project Manager Patrick Healy said Harr is proposing expanding the paved area from 63 parking spaces to 86 for employees, customers and another industrial tenant who will be based in the lower part of the building. The auto body shop would be located three miles north of the current Harr offices along I-190. Harr offers dealership and repair services for Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram and Toyota. The proposal will be considered at the planning board’s Sept. 8 meeting. Officials from Harr were not available for comment.
