Nissan’s new steel enhances fuel efficiency and driving performance Nissan has announced that it will expand the use of a new ultra-strong, high-formability steel in the vehicles it will be producing in future. First seen in the Infiniti QX50 midsize SUV, the new material combines high tensile strength with a previously unachievable degree of formability, resulting in lighter vehicles that can help lower emissions. The new material features a tensile strength of 980MPa, and was jointly developed by Nissan and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation. While maintaining the ability to absorb energy in a collision, the steel’s combination of stamping formability and strength makes it possible to form complex shapes that are thinner and lighter than those made of conventional high tensile strength steel. The ability for the steel to be cold pressed makes it suitable for mass production, which will help contain increases in vehicle costs. According to Nissan, the Infiniti QX50, which went on sale in the US in March, is the world’s first vehicle with front and rear side members made from 980MPa ultra-high tensile strength steel. The material is also used in a range of other body frame parts. Nissan launched a sustainability plan in June that calls for lowering CO2 emissions from its new vehicles by 40 percent by 2022, compared with 2000. The company is aggressively developing technologies to expand the use of ultra-high tensile strength steel, aiming for it to make up 25 percent of the company’s ‘vehicle parts by weight’. The material makes up 27 percent of the new QX50.
Champion’s 110-year pedigree Federal-Mogul Motorparts has highlighted its Champion range of cabin, air, oil, and fuel filters for optimised engine performance. The comprehensive range of Champion cabin filters offers 92% coverage of the European car parc and were developed according to the most stringent OE requirements. The cabin filters guarantee optimum performance, providing protection against not only fine dust, but also against pollens, road dust, abraded particles, soot, bacteria, industrial dusts, and other respirable ultra-fine particles. Apart from the health benefits, a new cabin filter maximises the airflow in the A/C heating system, resulting in better performance, reduced fuel consumption, no odd smells in the vehicle and also extends the lifespan of the cabin blower, therefore ensuring optimal window defogging. Champion’s OE-matching quality replacement parts avoid potentially dangerous issues, says Federal Mogul Motorparts Technical Advisor Albertus Steyn. To protect the most important components of the fuel system of both petrol and diesel engines, the brand offers a competitive range of fuel filters that offer the same performance as their OE counterparts. This assists in preventing power loss, damage, and bad starting properties due to contaminated fuel. The sensitivity of modern injection systems means that even the smallest particles can cause problems, due to the minimal tolerances of the moving parts of pumps and injectors. “Therefore, it is essential that only high-quality filters are installed in any fuel system,” Steyn concludes.
Snap-on Tyre Pressure Sensor System Tool Kit Snap-on has highlighted its TPMS diagnostic tool, which tests tyre pressure monitoring sensors, captures sensor data and relearns tyre pressure monitoring systems, and can even programme aftermarket sensors and print sensor information. It is the perfect complement to a technician’s Snap-on diagnostic platform.
The unit offers a multitude of features and benefits, including diagnosing TPM (Tyre Pressure Monitoring) sensors and determining whether or not a replacement is needed; capturing TPM sensor data and displaying PSI, ID, temperature and battery status; printing sensor information using TPMSconnect software (included) for PC or laptop; as well as the ability to relearn vehicle TPM systems by providing vehicle-specific reset procedures, when vehicle tyres have been rotated. The unit also features vehicle-specific prompts that guide TPM system relearns following sensor replacement and provides quick registration of new sensor locations after tyre rotations, as well as working Snap-on diagnostic platforms, to relearn sensor ID’s on Asian vehicles. Community commitment key to manufacturing success KLT Automotive and Tubular Products South Africa, a chassis manufacturing company that produces chassis frames to meet the requirements of Ford SA, will soon be ramping up production volumes. With its local plant just over 60 minutes from Pretoria in Hammanskraal, KLT SA runs a major contract with FMCSA for the Ford Ranger and now operates a three-shift pattern during the week, and two shift patterns on Saturdays, employing over 900 staff. According to Jubin Thakka, Group Managing Director, it became imperative to acquire specific skills sets in South Africa, since the company’s local inception. “Our chosen location, Hammanskraal was a distressed area and we believed that we could create much needed development, growth and employment opportunities. We built an in-house welding school to train and develop the people of the town
and employ from the small town to meet production targets,” explains Thakka. The operations started with a two-shift pattern, and aimed to increase to a three-shift pattern and therefore an increased volume, once more people were trained and employed. In December 2011, production had reached its expected optimal speed. “Ongoing staff training in global best practice; learnerships for youth in the community; factory tours; donations to community upliftment organisations; food subsidies for employees; free transport. Each of these embeds a company deeper into their community and ensures the stable, productive relationships needed to produce to world standard,” adds Thakka. As an Indian company with a seven-year history in Hammanskraal, KLT SA has learnt much from the country. “How companies relate on the local level will determine how well they are able to deliver on the global level. For all the automation in modern manufacturing, it will be their people who help multinational enterprises meet quality benchmarks, gain international certification and win contracts,” he concludes.

BASF Coatings awarded Red Dot for efficiency and innovation BASF’s Coatings division has been awarded the Red Dot in the “materials and surfaces” category at the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, Germany. The coatings company was honoured for its functional coating technology for passive temperature management. BASF explains that its system blends aesthetics and functionality. It works by virtue of the combination of a basecoat that is transparent to high-energy near infrared (NIR) radiation, with an NIR reflecting filler, both of which means the paint reduces the vehicle surface temperature by up to 20° C on hot summer days. It also means that the temperature inside the vehicle is reduced, allowing reduced usage of the air conditioning system. This, of course, has a positive effect on the energy consumption – especially in the field of electromobility. The paint system not only provides protection and creates a high-level finish for vehicles, it also ensures additional comfort and greater efficiency. “Modern mobility concepts such as autonomous driving or electromobility create new challenges for our developers and designers. The temperature management system is just one of our projects for future mobility.
Furthermore, we are currently working on paint systems with higher reflectivity to increase the recognisability for LiDAR sensors without affecting the aesthetical approach. Within the next years, this will be a crucial topic for autonomous driving,” explains Stephan Schwarte, head of Pigments, Dispersions & Innovative Colors EMEA at BASF’s Coatings division. Material expert Dr. Sascha Peters, who has also been part of this year’s Red Dot jury, highlights the sustainable approach of the temperature management technology: “The paint system is an outstanding example for the development towards sustainable mobility. It helps us to reduce the use of resources in a smart way. When changing to electric mobility in the future, we will hopefully see further solutions like this.” The annual “Red Dot Award: Product Design” sees a jury of 40 members evaluate all submissions, using criteria such as degree of innovation, functionality or sustainability. In 2018, designers and manufacturers from 59 nations registered more than 6,300 objects for the competition.
New Swift and Dzire get Tenneco MTV suspension technology Tenneco has revealed that it is supplying its Multi-Tuned Valve (MTV) suspension technology on two new vehicles. The first is the Swift Sport manufactured in Japan, and the second is the Dzire compact-sedan passenger car produced a tMaruti Suzuki India Limited.
The latest generation Swift, which made its debut in September at IAA 2017 in Frankfurt, Germany, will feature front struts and rear dampers from Tenneco. The automotive supplier says it has worked with Suzuki for over a decade, supplying OE front struts and rear shocks dampers for previous generation Swift and Swift Sport models. “Tenneco’s MTV valve technology has been precisionengineered to offer our customers great flexibility when it comes to tuning vehicle ride characteristics for the best possible balance of performance and comfort,” said Martin Hendricks, executive vice president and president, Tenneco Ride Performance. “Tenneco is excited to continue our long-standing relationship with Suzuki by adding the new Swift to our evergrowing portfolio of OE fitments.” The company designs and develops a broad range of passive, adaptive and semi- active shock absorbers to meet the needs of OE customers across multiple segments and markets. It produces the suspension technology for the Dzire at its Bawal plant in India, and at its Gliwice and Hodkovice plants in Europe for the Swift Sport.

Mahindra’s best dealers celebrated Mahindra South Africa has honoured its best performing dealers at an event in Durban. The automaker used the event to give dealers a look at the company’s new assembly facility, at the Dube Trade Port, located at the King Shaka airport in KZN. Arvind Mathew, the Chief of Global Operations for Mahindra & Mahindra, addressed attendees, while the coveted prize for Dealer of the Year, went to Mahindra Montana, Mahindra Pretoria North and Mahindra Brits. These three dealers were the top performers in the categories for large, medium and small dealers respectively. “Over the past five years, we have seen our market share grow e 4.6% per year as we added more models to our line-up and more customers joined the Mahindra family,” says Rajesh Gupta, the CEO of Mahindra South Africa. “Such rapid growth can be detrimental to the brand if the dealer network does not support the growing customer base with good service quality and support so we would like to thank each dealer for his part in helping us maintain our high standards.”Mahindra took the opportunities to emphasise the importance of good service quality and support, with its special Balanced Scorecard Award. This award, handed out to dealers in the small, medium and large categories, evaluates overall dealer performance - including sales, after sales and parts availability - as well as customer sales and service satisfaction. In the Balanced Scorecard Category, Mahindra Brits, Mahindra Goodwood and Mahindra Bloemfontein took top honours in the small, medium and large dealer categories. Self-driving taxis – Daimler and Bosch partner in US trial Daimler AG, the parent company of luxury car brand Mercedes Benz, has announced that together with partner Bosch, it will start testing self-driving taxis in the Silicon Valley area of California, USA in 2019. The companies made the joint announcement in July saying it was part of a test programme that will trial cars designed for city driving. They were, however, not forthcoming on where exactly the Robo-Fleet trial will take place, but explained that it will involve a passenger shuttle service, using luxury vehicles. It intends starting off using the S-Class sedans and B-Class hatchbacks, while long term it will include vehicles such as the F 105 “Luxury In Motion” concept it revealed at CES just a few years ago. The system will use a human driver, with their own steering wheel, to oversee the vehicle. Passengers will hail taxis via an app service operated by
Daimler, and will travel free of charge on selected routes within the city during the pilot. The service will be built atop the artificial intelligence platform Nvidia DRIVE Pegasus, supplied by chipmaker Nvidia, the companies told the media during their conference. Bosch already has proven experience in building active safety systems as well as semi-autonomous systems already in use. The two companies say they will work together to develop the sensors the vehicles use to perceive the world, and the software that makes the actual driving decisions. Bosch is already in the process of developing an electronic control unit – which will act as the main computer to controls functions within a self-driving vehicle. The latter will use Nvidia’s hardware chips and base software technology. Until then, it will rely on existing technology from Nvidia, like its Pegasus platform, said Michael Fausten, Bosch’s head of urban autonomous driving.
Opel announces R700m fund injection Opel South Africa – a wholly owned subsidiary of Opel Germany – has announced its parent company’s recent R700 Million investment in the parts, warranty and servicing plan offering for the local market. The local dealership network has also stepped up, investing R20 million in corporate identity facility upgrades. Unitrans, which holds the distributor rights for Opel in Southern Africa, used local signage contractors to roll out the new brand identity and improved customer experience centres. “Opel wants to stimulate additional local job creation and support local business, and our local suppliers met the German required standards,” said Brian Hunter, General Manager of Unitrans Opel Southern Africa. General Motors held the distribution for the brand until 2017 when it decided to withdraw from various right-hand drive markets around the globe. Opel says it used the opportunity to “re-focus its dealership network in South Africa” and now operates 35 fully operational dealerships, with more expected to open over the next 60 months as the brand regains its traction locally. Bill Mott, Opel director of international sales operations in Germany, commented: “We view South Africa as a very important market. South Africa is a strategic investment for
PAGE 14
Opel and our aim is to take the brand from strength to strength in South Africa and other key markets.” Hunter added: “We are delighted that investment in the Opel brand in SA has now exceeded R1.5 billion, when one combines the investment of Opel International, the Unitrans Opel distributor and the group of Opel Dealers. We estimate that this investment now employs over 1 000 people.”

VW paves the way for right to repair The Right to Repair (R2R) Campaign says it is celebrating the decision by Volkswagen to make several changes in relation to the independent aftermarket. They hope this move signals a willingness by manufacturers to start opening up the after-sales market to independent providers. “Thanks to the process started by the Competition Commission, we believe VW is also being guided by the practices in the European Union,” says Gunther Schmitz, spokesperson for Right to Repair SA. In a submission to the Competition Commission, VW stated that it would commit to ensuring that warranties will remain in place if service, maintenance or repair work is performed by independent third parties. Along with that, it committed to making tools and equipment, as well as the technical literature required for servicing and repair of VW vehicles, available from approved dealers. Lastly it stated that VW is prepared to consider training for independent service providers. “This is a great step forward,” says Schmitz. “We understand that the Competition Commission is still busy with finalising the Code of Conduct and due to the complexity of the topic many stakeholder engagements are required. In the meantime, the submission by

VW shows that some vehicle manufacturers are open to allowing the same competitive environment as is standard in Europe and will benefit the South African consumer.” He highlights that the R2R campaign aims to allow consumers to select where their vehicles are serviced, maintained and repaired at competitive prices in the workshop of their choice. “There is a need for a fair and competitive regulatory environment that enables freedom of choice for consumers and gives aftermarket Small Medium Enterprises a chance to stay in business. South African legislature needs to follow international Right to Repair trends which promote South Africa’s existing consumer and competition laws.” “We applaud VW on taking the first step and we are looking forward to seeing other manufacturers follow suit as has happened in other countries where R2R has been active.”

Disruptive technologies in the SA automotive sector Interest and investment in disruptive technologies has significantly increased over the past few years and a handful of local automotive sector firms are embracing these technologies. Automotive glass manufacturer Shatterprufe is one such business. Located in the automotive component manufacturing hub of Port Elizabeth, it is the only local OEM glass supplier for vehicle assemblers in South Africa. Dave Coffey, Managing Director of Shatterprufe and National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers (NAACAM) President, is one of these early adopters. “For Shatterprufe, it is critical to get to the aftermarket early with new products that comply with the stringent quality standards of the OEM’s.” Typically, Shatterprufe will buy an OEM product in Europe, should the vehicle not be sold locally, bring it to South Africa, develop the computer aided design (CAD) drawings, and then produce the part, which will then be sent to the international client for approval. Through exploring new scanning technologies, Shatterprufe will receive a 3-D scan of the product, convert this into a CAD file and commence development and manufacturing. This could include the 3D printing of the checking fixture. The developed part will be scanned and sent to the client for approval. For Shatterprufe, this technology can minimise the sample delivery time by four to six weeks. “We can reduce substantial time in the product development process and therefore reduce lead times to market significantly. We are also prototyping and using this scanning technology for sample approval of components for glass as well. We expect to see a full roll-out of this technology by the end of 2019,” adds Coffey. He explains that the key advantage provided by the technology is that it allows his company to get to the market first, and to secure both the local and export aftermarket volumes. The South African Automotive Masterplan (SAAM) includes ambitious growth targets for the sector over the medium- to
PAGE 18
long-term. Some of this growt h will result from the investment in these advanced manufacturing technologies, explains Coffey. “I can foresee these technologies facilitating competitiveness which will enable the growth we need.” He suggests that as organisations are always looking for opportunities to grow, and if these technologies are relevant and provide clear benefits, then the industry will willingly embrace them. From his experience, he found that people generally embrace technologies once they have seen them being demonstrated, where the technical merits of the technology are clearly outlined. However, and more importantly, the benefit of partnering a client in developing new technology should not be underestimated. The NAACAM Show says it will introduce an innovative approach to profiling automotive technologies and innovations through the hosting of technical demonstrations. Exhibitors will have the opportunity to host 20-minute technical demonstrations in the show’s purpose-built Media and Demonstration Centre. Automotive component manufacturers and technology partners will be encouraged to present a case study or conduct a demonstration on a key technology or innovation with an explicit focus on the future of manufacturing in the automotive sector. This will be followed by an informal question and answer session where delegates will have the opportunity to seek clarity or advice on the technologies, for their own operations. “These tech demos will provide unique insight for component manufacturers to gain access to practical, hands-on examples of innovative technologies, as well as provide a platform to stimulate a dialogue around integrating technology into the automotive sector”, says Coffey.

WORLD’S FIRST DIAGNOSTIC TYRE CHANGER Experts Choice! ANALYSES
During the usual mounting and demounting of the tyres, it analyses the geometry of the rim and the uniformity of the tyre (radial and side rigidity, and any geometric deformation) that may cause, above all, vibrations while driving.
MATCH-MOUNTING It solves any irregularity by optimising the coupling position of the rim and tyre (match-mounting), the only real solution to this problem, avoiding the pointless use of the tyre changer and wheel balancer. Uniformity is the first technology that allows match-mounting to be carried out directly on the tyre changer, transforming it into a real wheel diagnosis centre. Essential for the professional who wants to provide clients with a first-class service.

Toyota shares 800 localisation opportunities with South African suppliers The recent Toyota South Africa Motors “International Multipurpose Vehicle (IMV) Imported Parts Exhibition” was held in Durban and was attended by more than 40 suppliers, as well as the Durban Automotive Cluster (DAC). The attending suppliers viewed more than 800 components that are open to localisation, in what TSAM calls their IMV Localisation drive ‘3 point 5’. The exhibition allowed attendees to see the part and its volume, and then identify which they wanted to quote on, by affixing a sticker with their name onto each part. TSAM will now share the technical drawings, specifications and the quotation template. TSAM Senior Purchasing Manager, Theo Govender, explained that at the model change in 2016, double the number of parts were localised. The previous IMV (Hilux/Fortuner) had 1307 local components and the new IMV, 2673. Since this launch, in phase one of TSAM’s localisation drive, 83 parts were localised, then 127 and 88 parts are currently being localised in phase 3. With TSAM approaching midway through the IMV model cycle, and the localisation process taking up to two years, this is last window for meaningful localisation for TSAM’s flagship platform - as amortisation of tooling and other required investment is unlikely in a time frame of less than five years.
PAGE 20
TSAM Vice President of Engineering and Purchasing, John Oliver, added: “While the initial localisation was significant given the sheer volume, naturally potential localisation opportunities were missed. When sourcing began in 2012 the Rand was about R8:$1. By the time production started in 2016 it had moved to R16:$1. While it has strengthened, the benefits of greater local production are significant, just on a FOREX basis. Looking forward to the next model change it will become more difficult to localise if suppliers do not develop the capabilities required soon. TSAM has a long-term strategy to support the achievement of the SA Automotive Masterplan while remaining focussed on excellent quality and well-priced vehicle supply. This format of having suppliers come to TSAM to touch and feel the parts is more effective for both TSAM and suppliers.” Themba Mtati, MD of Yenza, who travelled from Port Elizabeth to the event concurred: “We get requests for quotations that are not aligned with our process capabilities and this must frustrate the buyers when we decline to quote. We do want to quote where we have the capabilities”.
‘This format allows us to see a huge number of parts and identify what we can quote on” he continued. Yenza doesn’t supply TSAM yet, but is positive about the opportunities offered. “We have networked with tier 1s who we could also supply into where we might not have all the machinery needed but could supply a sub-component”.
collaborative opportunities that may exist, to increase local content.”
Malusi Shezi, MD of Gamamboh Engineering from iSithebe, north of Durban, is new to the auto sector. He viewed a range of pressed parts they will quote on. “We have the presses at our facility that can produce these parts. While we are currently mainly supplying to the white goods sector, I am confident we could become a TSAM and automotive supplier too. This is an excellent opportunity for us and must save TSAM resources too.”
“The intent of the exhibition today was to support further localisation and allow our tier one suppliers to engage with potential tier 2 and tier 3 suppliers, to further develop, deepen and transform the automotive supplier chain. We are gaining a database of suppliers though the Automotive Supply Chain Competitiveness Initiative (ASCCI) and intend to replicate this event with a wider audience. Where the supplier base cannot localise, we are flexible in how to engage to achieve our objectives - a public-private partnership or engagement with international companies with proprietary design/technology to partner with a local transformed supplier are models we can pursue. We set a challenge for this year at our Annual Business Meeting for each of our tier 1 suppliers to develop a sustainable black-owned manufacturer. Step by step we will deepen and develop our supplier chain and drive the wealth and job creation for our economy. We are also looking forward to the NAACAM Show 2019 where we can engage with other current and potentially new suppliers who will be gathered.”
Oliver added: “The TSAM localisation journey is not stopping and a similar event for tier 2 and tier 3 suppliers will be arranged soon, with appropriate parts displayed. We’re also encouraging T1s to work closely with their suppliers and develop new Black-owned suppliers, as transformation of the supply base is as important as deepening local content. A strong tier 2/3-supplier base is essential. Suppliers must also consider the export opportunities possible. Toyota Argentina for instance produces about 140 000 IMVs and there is no reason we can’t export more components there. I’m also excited about the renewed focus of the OEM Purchasing Council and the work that will be done to identify the

Eqstra launches tyre mobility solution Eqstra Fleet Management and Logistics says it has invested R4.3 million in a tyre mobility solution for its customers. It adds that the new solution has also created significant business opportunities for black owned SMME’s. “With tyre spend of more than R50 million per annum, we believe that this is an ideal opportunity to effect sustainable transformation in the supply chain of the business through enterprise and supplier development, while creating value for customers and black owned SMME’s,” said Jacqui Carr, CEO of Eqstra. “We are investing in and supporting black women owned and/or black-owned, exempted micro enterprises (EME’s) and qualifying small enterprises (QSE’s), with black ownership of more than 51%,” she adds. “This solution will also allow us to provide real value for our customers by significantly reducing downtime due to tyre problems.” Eqstra has already identified three enterprises that have qualified for the programme: DSC, Siyakhande Mobile Workshops and Lebolex. Critical requirements for qualifying enterprises include those with some industry and product knowledge, some business management knowledge and an appetite for commitment and success. The company will supply its chosen enterprises with panel vans, converted where necessary and fitted-out for commercial, passenger and LDV tyre applications. Balancing machines, air conditioners and load-bin rubberising are also included. The total investment will range from R650 000 to R950 000 per supplier. The enterprises, which are situated across Gauteng, will be introduced to Eqstra’s customer base and will offer the full
PAGE 22
range of tyre services including tyre replacement, repair, balancing and servicing/rotation. Mobile units will attend to the vehicles at the customer’s premises, reducing downtime. Wheels will have to be aligned at a regular supplier, as wheel alignment requires a ‘solid’ foundation to enable effective readings and operation of machinery. However, to further assist customers, the mobile operator will be able to transfer the vehicle to such an operation for the alignment to be complete. To ensure preferential pricing for customers, the enterprises will be able to buy tyres and accessories from Eqstra’s preferred suppliers on special terms and at discounted rates. Eqstra has partnered with Raizcorp, which provides a rigorous business incubation programme to ensure the enterprises are able to offer a top quality service. The programme will include comprehensive business management processes including customer service, sales, financials and reporting, operations, marketing, human resources, legal, strategy, etc. It will also include ED/SD owner upskilling and personal development. Handing over the vehicles, Carr said the benefits to both customer, enterprises and Eqstra would be significant. “We will be able to create sustainable supply chains and offer our customers preferential pricing, superior service and reduced downtime. At the same time, we are encouraging and developing our suppliers to create sustainable businesses while simultaneously improving our BB BEE scoring.”

Isuzu announces Isuzu Industrial Hub
- Grant West
Isuzu South Africa has announced its alliance with the Propella Business Centre in Port Elizabeth, through its investment in the Isuzu Industrial Hub over the next 3 years. Located at the Propella Business Incubator, the hub will champion disruptive technology and innovation in the advanced manufacturing sector. Isuzu’s executive of corporate affairs, Denise van Huyssteen, said this support would be directed at the development of innovative projects within the industrial hub. “Since the launch of Isuzu Motors South Africa in January this year, the company has been focused on building a sustainable business for the long-term. Developing meaningful and impactful partnerships, which positively impact the community, forms a critical part of this strategy.” Incubation Manager Anita Palmer commented: “We are always on the look-out for catalytic projects that can contribute to the competitiveness of the local economy and support job creation. Through the development of appropriate technologies and providing the right type of infrastructure to entrepreneurs, we support innovative solutions and access to market that is crucial to the success of a business.” The Isuzu Industrial Hub is open for applications all year round - subject to pre-screening assessments. Applicants can either be virtually incubated, or physically incubated at the hub. The programme lasts three years and the incubatees are assigned “moaches” (a combination of a mentor and a coach), as well as an advisory board.
PAGE 24
As part of the new partnership agreement, five of Isuzu Motors South Africa’s black automotive component suppliers will also benefit from virtual incubation support provided by Propella, ranging from mentoring to business development assistance. Isuzu has also donated an Isuzu bakkie to Propella, which will be used for industry visits by Propella staff as well as the transportation of materials as needed. “The vehicle will make it possible for us to onboard new projects like a smart city vertical Urban Farm as the vehicle would be utilised to take product to market and will essentially enable us to develop a business-in-a-box concept,” said Palmer. The overarching vision of Propella is to create a Smart HiTech Incubator for a Smart City. Propella supports specific advanced manufacturing and energy sectors, industry cluster development and supply chain optimisation. Propella also received robotic welding cells donated by industry in order to assist with developing technical incubatees for supplying component parts into the local automotive and engineering sectors.

Handling damage – timing is everything - Chris Monroe We have all felt that empty feeling in our gut when a client walks back in the door with the “look” shortly after installing that new set of tyres on their BMW. As they uncomfortably begin to describe some rim damage that didn’t exist when the car was dropped off…yuck. Yes, you have policies in place to address such situations, but for whatever reason, the training on quality control has failed and now you are left to deal with the fallout. What next? It is obvious there is a quality control issue that must be addressed, but how you take the next steps are very critical to the image of your business, as well as the credibility of your team. The first step is to remain calm while reviewing the client’s concerns. Walk out to the vehicle and allow them to express what they feel is of issue. Once you have listened and observed with sincerity, start the process of restoration. In our case, we had an incorrect set up on the tire machine with a low profile run-flat that ultimately allowed contact with the rim. This scratched the lip in multiple places. In addition, the technician continued with the installation without stopping to involve the advisor so we could get in front of the issue with the client. The technician did tell the advisor, but the timing was such that the client looked at the assembly on the car prior to checking out. Imagine how much easier this would have been had the advisor gotten to the client immediately to make them aware and assure them that we would professionally restore or replace the wheel.
A better example this week, where a technician wisely notated worn lug nuts, and a partially damaged centre cap “before” we began work. He gave the advisor a quick headsup that enabled a client visit to the vehicle to see in person and discuss the concerns. Not only did we replace the brakes on the car, but also replaced 20 lug-nuts and 4 centre caps! The service concluded with the client scheduling another vehicle for service and thanking our team for being honest and helping resolve the issues. (This ain’t rocket science folks.) If you are in the automotive service business, incidents can, and will, happen. Coach and train your team on how to handle these situations, and demonstrate how important timing is with advising your client. Your shop’s reputation and credibility ride on it.
Needless to say, I spent the next day with each and every technician reviewing the situation and the importance of why we have policy and process in place. Our technicians are now well aware of what to do (stop immediately and report the issue to the advising team) if damage occurs or could occur to a client’s vehicle, and understand the importance of getting in “front” of these concerns.

AutoForum - July / August 2018
Protests, deregulation and the petrol price The increase to fuel prices in July marked the fourth straight month in 2018 that these prices increased. They came off the back of three decreases in January, February and March. And, says the Automobile Association (AA), while the outlook looks positive for a small decrease in August, the fuel price remains under pressure off record highs in 2018. The deregulation of petrol prices, and whether this would lead to lower fuel prices, was debated recently at an event co-hosted by the AA and the Wits Business School in Johannesburg. Speaking at the event, AA CEO Collins Khumalo noted that the petrol price is a symptom of a weak economy, and that dealing with increases to fuel prices needed a broader overview of the current economic climate in the country. “Road users and consumers are feeling the pressure of the increases; many households are having to cut back on other expenses to fund private or public travel costs, with consumers using illuminating paraffin among those hardest of the hit,” Khumalo pointed out. “Several options to reduce the fuel price have been put forward but the reality, unfortunately, is that the fuel price make-up is complex and a single solution will not necessarily solve the problem,” Khumalo noted.
PAGE 28
And, he said, scrapping the indirect taxes on fuel – in the form of the R3.37 a litre General Fuel Levy and R1.93 a litre Road Accident Fund (RAF) Levy – is not going to ease the pressure on consumers. “In the short-term the scrapping of these levies may reduce the fuel price but government will still have to collect this revenue through other means. Will consumers be happier with these taxes, for instance, the raising of the VAT rate, or an increase to personal income tax rates?” he asked. Khumalo also believes that the discussion around deregulation is, of course, part of that long-term debate, in which he sees the AA as an important part of the mix. Although he also points out that deregulation, on its own, will not fix the entire fuel price structure, “Importantly, it is not going to put money in the pockets of consumers immediately. This is a long-term issue, which must be discussed and debated by civil society and government.” The association debated the pros and cons at the event, but for the average South African, the end result is all that really matters.
July ended with news that the Democratic Alliance and several taxi organisations had issued a call to government to act with urgency on the fuel price and taxation issue. The DA was joined by OUTA and the Freedom Movement, who then jointly marched to National Treasury in Pretoria to highlight the issue, with the hashtag #StopTheTaxAttack. The parties want a 20% reduction in the Road Accident Fund and general fuel levies – believing this will see the petrol price drop to less than R15 a litre. At the AA event however, Khumalo had cautioned that civil action against rising fuel prices, in the form of road blockades and fuel boycotts, may not bring the desired results to those protesting, and may be dealing with the issue from the wrong angle. He added that the AA acknowledges that people are angry but that solutions are needed now, not protests which could further harm the economy. Demonstrations in SA have historically not always remained peaceful, and often degrade into pure criminal violence and looting as we have recently witnessed, specifically along the N3 route. “It is important to understand that rising fuel prices are not a petrol issue. They are an economic issue. What we all need to get behind, as a nation, is understanding how government is spending the money from the levies on fuel, and how
any wastage in expenditure can be curbed. In this way the considerable onus on consumers will, in the long run, be eased,” he said. Another major issue from the discussion was the structure of government and State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) which, Khumalo said, need to be more efficiently managed. “There is a dire need for the proper allocation of resources – and management of those resources – throughout government and SOEs. If these resources are better managed the impact of what we are seeing now would be lessened,” he concluded. The fact remains that the average consumer is growing weary of their taxes being allocated so extremely poorly or in so many cases - simply stolen. This is at the core of the popular movement to reduce the blanket taxes that are applied through systems such as VAT and the Fuel levy. Perhaps having an organisation such as OUTA behind the movement could stir up a campaign of civil disobedience much like the one that has brought the e-toll system to its knees. Whether the government and treasury like it or not, the people will have their say, and this issue effects virtually every bit of our heavily transport-dependent economy. Hopefully the average consumer has had enough to start actually doing something about it - if only they would turn that into voting decisions.

Ford Ranger series still on top of sales lists Its no surprise that over the years since Ford’s latest Ranger series was launched, it has become a top contender in the category traditionally dominated by its biggest rival. In almost organic explosion of “Ranger Culture”, many owners choose to customise their bakkies - specifically in emulation of the Raptor kit and muscled-up look. Naturally this doesn’t always work too well with manufacturer warranties. In order to address a section of the market that sees their Rangers as a status vehicle, Ford South Africa launched a “factory-pimped” version in the FX4 derivative. The side stripes, bonnet decals and large black rims are all part of a kit which is purely aesthetic - but importantly covered by the factory warranty. AutoForum has been fortunate enough to drive many of the Ranger models over the years - both the 2.2 and 3.2 models are stunners, fantastic SUV styling thouroughly enjoyable to drive as workhorses, on highways and obviously off-road. They have set a new benchmark in the category and it has been interesting to note how most competitors have had to follow the trends set by the new bakkie king.

Renault Nissan Mitsubishi alliance highlights record half-year results The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance recently announced that unit sales at its member companies rose 5.1 percent to a new record of 5,538,530 vehicles in the six months to June 30. The three alliance member companies said they saw increased demand in product segments including crossovers, sports utility vehicles, pick-ups as well as zero-emission electric and hybridelectric models. Both Renault and Nissan reported strong demand in the electric vehicle (EV) segment. Renault secured 21.9 percent of the European EV market share with ZOE and Kangoo Z.E., which also holds 38 percent of the electric LCV market share. At Nissan, demand for the new LEAF contributed to EV sales of over 47,000 in the first half, and became the best-selling electric vehicle in Europe for the first half of this year with more than 18,000 registrations. Mitsubishi Motors remained the market leader in the PHEV SUV segment with continued orders for its hybrid-electric Outlander.
Carlos Ghosn, chairman and chief executive officer of Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, said: “Our member companies continue to lift unit sales in multiple markets, reflecting our brands’ competitive and attractive offerings. This strong sales performance in the first half of 2018 shows we are on track with the forecast we set in our Alliance 2022 mid-term plan. Under the six-year mid-term plan, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi is forecasting combined sales of more than 14 million units annually by the end of 2022, up more than 30 percent from the 10.6 million units sold by the Alliance member companies in 2017. The plan also involves deepening convergence between the member companies, including the use of common platforms and powertrains, while sharing innovation in electrification, connectivity and autonomous drive technologies.

Vehicle Pricing Index dips below inflation for the 4th consecutive quarter According to TransUnion, lower vehicle price inflation is providing significant relief to embattled consumers. The latest SA Vehicle Pricing Index (VPI) for new and used vehicles dipped significantly to 2.6% and 2.5% in the second quarter of 2018. This follows the 5.4% and 3.6% recorded in the same period last year. TransUnion adds that this means the VPI for new passenger vehicles has dipped below inflation for the fourth consecutive quarter. Despite this positive news, the company cautions that the industry is at a sensitive point in the cycle. A weak rand, potentially higher interest rates and global trade wars are all likely to weigh on imported component costs, with the final cost being transferred to consumers in the months ahead. Head of TransUnion Auto in South Africa, Kriben Reddy said the current pricing trends are nevertheless “very good news” for consumers, with some car brands having managed to reduce their prices over the past 12 months. An example of this is the new Polo Vivo 1.4, which is 3.6% less expensive than a year ago and the cost of a Hyundai Grand i10 Fluid 1.2 is down 2.9%. Other cars in the entry-level band show similar declines, with the Kia Picanto down 6.3% and the Ford Figo showing no inflation for 12 months.
The used-to-new ratio, meanwhile, decreased from 2.41 in Q2 2017 to 2.05 in Q2 2018. “In the used vehicle market, the make-up of used vehicle sales has shown that 43% are under two years old and 9% were demo models, which indicates consumers are opting for under 2-year-old vehicles,” continued Reddy. Of interest is that TransUnion’s research shows that even certain luxury brands have reined in price increases. For instance, the Mercedes E class has lifted only 0.9% and the Volvo XC60 has shown no inflation over the past 12 months. While the current risks to the export and component import market are high due to global trade wars, Reddy does not expect to see a major impact in the next few months. However, he cautioned that there is likely to be a lagged effect as tariff changes in certain geographies take effect over the longer term. “The US has kicked off the process of imposing a tariff on imports and in the short term, we will see an appreciation of the rand. This will directly affect SA’s GDP growth rate,” he said.
Reddy commented: “At a time when consumers are feeling the pinch from price increases in areas, like fuel, as the economy struggles to gain ground, these lower prices provide significant relief.”
Those manufactures that stocked up in advance and have forward cover, are well placed. “They will need to relook their export markets to export at the same volumes and remain competitive.”
Lower input costs, CPI inflation, reduced interest rates and competitive financing structures, together with the streamlining of some product lines, are among the reasons underpinning the current pricing trends.
TransUnion advises consumers to remain vigilant and keep a close watch on their affordability levels and credit health in current conditions. These volatile conditions could lead to a weaker rand, increased interest rates and could, therefore, place more strain on consumers who have not worked out their total cost of ownership.
TransUnion’s data has also found that total financial agreement volumes in the passenger market have increased from the second quarter of 2017 to the second quarter of 2018, by 7%. New passenger finance deals increased by 18%, and used increased by 2%. “These factors have offset the negative impact of fuel and VAT increases which make it ideal for consumers to enter the new vehicle market.”
“Consumers must still keep a very close watch on their credit health and do their homework before making a major credit decision like buying a car,” concluded Reddy.

Documentation is key to communicating the collision repair process - John Shoemaker
The proliferation of vehicles equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) on SA roads intensifies each year. ADAS monitors the environment around the vehicle using radar, camera, laser and/or infrared sensors. With a high portion of this technology embedded in the windscreen, these developments have had a massive impact on the auto glazing repair and replacement (AGRR) industry. What was once a simple matter of changing the glass is now far more complicated. Just like the cars that we repair have changed,

Refinish tips for electric vehicles According to Spies Hecker, getting exceptional repair results at low temperatures is a huge challenge for refinishers when they carry out paint repairs on electric and hybrid vehicles. The rule of thumb, however, when repairing electric vehicles is safety first. Basic procedures must be adhered to, including switch off power, ensure there is no voltage, and ensure the power can’t accidently be switched on during the repair. Jantjies concludes: “Only when the refinisher has carried out all these safety checks should the repair commence.”
With the number of registrations of electric and hybrid vehicles steadily growing internationally, getting to grips with the refinishing of these vehicles presents new challenges. “The drying process in particular is affected. The temperature limits are clearly set by the vehicle manufacturer and of course must be observed. Overall, for the exact manufacturer’s recommendation on how to carry out a proper repair, refinishers must look at the vehicle’s documentation,” says Lucian Jantjies, national sales leader for Axalta in South Africa. The company explains that integrated refinish system solutions can deliver exceptional repair results on paint damaged electric and hybrid vehicles, even at low temperatures. “The Spies Hecker Hi-TEC Performance System provides a refinish system that meets many car manufacturers’ specifications. Permahyd Hi-TEC Base Coat 480 and Permasolid HS Speed Clear Coat 8800 – both part of the Hi-TEC Performance System - are particularly well-suited for use at the low temperatures required during the repair

of paint damage on electric vehicles,” explains Jantjies. He adds that Permasolid HS Speed Clear Coat 8800 provides fast drying at low temperatures “When Permasolid HS Speed Clear Coat 8800 is used with Permasolid VHS Speed Hardener 3250, it can be sanded at 21oC after between 35 to 50 minutes.” The air-drying option also helps save energy, compared to forced drying.
Does your business measure up?

Many businesses have delayed investment for reasons that include cost and the uncertainty of the future of collision repair, but the reality is, cars will still need to be repaired. With the advent of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in even the most affordable cars, a simple misalignment of a bracket or mounting point on a vehicle body can have serious implications. Misalignment will affect many systems on a vehicle, not just the appearance. Today a simple visual inspection of the damage is not good enough and is not conducive to quality repairs. The point is, how do you know a part doesn’t fit if you don’t know if the vehicle is straight? Many technicians will argue that experience can tell you where the damage is located, but without documentation or proof, it is at best a guestimate. In today’s vehicles, with tighter tolerances in manufacturing, we need to measure accurately. ADAS systems require that all sensors are located, aimed and calibrated correctly as even small variances at the sensors will have huge differences in detecting objects further down the road. Consequently, measuring plays a larger role than before, even in minor incidents. Measuring and diagnosing is time consuming, but if diagnosed correctly, the repair will ultimately be quicker as there will be no doubt as to where all the damage is located.
The latest measuring systems are expensive to buy and the time to train technicians in their correct use can also adversely affect productivity. However, what is the cost of rectification when a vehicle is not measured and the ADAS systems cannot be recalibrated into specification?
The new structures absorb and transfer energy through load paths that can differ from vehicle to vehicle. Energy transfer from a collision can produce indirect damage in areas that include steering, suspension, water and fume sealing, along with electronic safety systems.
The future is coming and ADAS systems will become mandatory across all models soon. Many countries are enforcing ADAS introduction by 2020!
As with all measuring systems, the ease of use and accuracy are of high importance. Electronic measuring systems today provide fast and efficient results for technicians that are far more effective and accurate than the old ladder underbody systems. If your business does not have electronic measuring today, it is costing you time and potential profitability. I cannot stress enough the pressures being placed on businesses to ensure that a vehicle is straight on completion of repairs.
New processes will require vehicles to be straight; this includes body panels where radar units are mounted. The only way to ensure a vehicle is straight will be by measuring. These measurements will also provide the estimator with a better understanding of what can be repaired and what cannot, resulting in repair efficiencies immediately. The mantra of repairing everything that comes into a business becomes a false economy, causing potentially dangerous situations when ADAS systems are involved. Measuring has always been a fundamental skill in collision repair, but somewhere along the line its importance has been lost. With tolerances on new vehicles smaller than ever, visual inspection is harder than ever, making measuring the most important part of the process, before, during and after the repair.
It is time to understand that visual inspections of new vehicles for repair estimates will not provide a realistic repair plan. This should be a Standard Operation Procedure for estimators and while it will take more time, the outcome will be a repair estimate that delivers a complete repair analysis to the customer. This also ensures a realistic time frame for repairs that will allow enough time for sublet calibrations if required. If a repair plan is optimised, through complete measuring in the beginning, it will be completed more effectively and most importantly – safely and correctly.

Repairing cars and young lives A North Melbourne, Australia, social enterprise is helping to ease the growing labour shortage in the collision repair industry, as well as reduce the incidence of youth crime. The initiative is a partnership between community organisation Mission Australia, the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC), Kangan TAFE and Suncorp Group. Young people are referred to the programme through Mission Australia, Victoria Police or Juvenile Corrections.
participants may also work toward completing an industry-recognised accreditation in panel beating or spray painting.
“Every customer that comes through our roller doors is making an investment in the futures of vulnerable young people,” said Crellin.
Participants also gain on-the-job training and work experience alongside qualified and experienced auto industry professionals and are supported by a team of training and employment specialists.
“Their support means students can turn their lives around and engage in a practical alternative to crime, corrections and detention. Our students are young people who are passionate about cars. They have made some poor choices; for many they don’t see a pathway out of the cycle of trauma. The automotive industry is an ageing workforce and this offers an effective way to encourage more young people to take on a career in the auto repair industry.”
Operating as Synergy Auto Repairs, the programme began in June 2014. It offers customers a full suite of smash repair services, while providing support for young people aged 16-20 with a history of motor vehicle-related offences.
According to Mission Australia, harnessing juvenile offenders’ interest in cars helps them build a career that matches their interests, gets their lives back on track, and into an industry with diminishing millennial workforce participation.
In addition to gaining the practical experience and employability skills needed to commence a panel-beating or spray-painting apprenticeship,
Mission Australia’s Social Enterprise Program Manager, Troy Crellin, said Synergy provides “a unique opportunity to do good”.

According to Mission Australia, an independent evaluation found participants experience strong improvement in overall well-being, social stability, and a willingness to work and stay away from
negative influences during their time at Synergy. They also develop the skills needed to build a sustainable career pathway.

“Not only is the service a positive way to reduce motoring related offences, it also provides a pathway to independence and breaks the cycle of crime. Given students are vulnerable and often have complex needs, it’s encouraging to see that almost three quarters of participants are now in further full-time work or education. It’s about providing skills for life as much as it is skills for the smash repairs workshop,” said Crellin.

Speeding up your paint prep
- Al Thomas
I once heard a new paint technician tell his friend that he loved painting, but he hated sanding. Well, I don’t think that any of us would list sanding as the task that we most look forward to when working, but we must also face the fact that if a good paint job is 90 percent prep, then sanding is one of the most important jobs done when painting a vehicle. In fact, sanding is 30 percent of paint labour. That said, like everything else in the collision industry, the faster you can get it done, the more profit that can be made. Let’s take a look at some techniques that help speed the sanding process. Washing and cleaning One of the first steps when prepping a vehicle for paint is washing (with soap and water) and cleaning (with wax and grease remover). This important two-prong step will prevent a great deal of problems that may crop up later in the process. I say may, because some painters might get away with painting a vehicle that is not clean, or they just may not recognize that some of their problems stem from not properly cleaning the vehicle before painting. Besides the obvious fish-eye problem, other problems such as dirt in the paint, missed defects and poor adhesion can all be traced back to a poorly cleaned vehicle. Some look at this step as
PAGE 54
a waste of time, while others just overlook the importance of the process. But painting over a vehicle that is not properly cleaned only leads to problems later in the process. Both “prongs” of this procedure are critical. In the soap and water step, pH balanced soap is used to remove contaminants over the entire vehicle, including the door jams, under the bonnet and the deck lid. Once the entire vehicle is soap-andwater cleaned, the technician should clean the area to be painted with a wax and grease remover that is compliant with your shop’s paint system and the regulations of your area. This cleaning removes the contaminants that were not soluble by soap and water. The vehicle can be blown dry following the cleaning process so that the next step, sanding, can start immediately. A hand-held air amplifier that is used for waterborne paint drying works very well.
Inspection Inspecting the area to be painted is vital to find any defect that must be corrected, before initial prep of the paint area. This inspection can often be done while either washing or cleaning the vehicle. Look for things that may have been missed by the tech undertaking the body-work, as well as for any defects that the estimator missed. If any are found, notify the estimator so a supplement can be written. By conducting an initial inspection while washing the vehicle, the technician can make a repair plan at that time. During the inspection process, the tech should also retrieve the paint code and write it down on the work order, if it is not already there. Having the paint code early in the process and checking that all the needed supplies are available for the job will eliminate wasted down time later on. If some supplies must be ordered, the job can proceed with the prep while the order is shipped in.
Alfred Thomas is associate professor and department head of Collision Repair at Pennsylvania College of Technology. His technical experiences include 15 years in the collision industry as a technician and shop manager, 12 years as a secondary vocational instructor, and the past eight years as lead instructor at Penn College. Before we start sanding, let’s first look at the way abrasives are graded, so that we can choose the correct one. Abrasives One of the more confusing changes in abrasives happened some years ago, but is still not fully understood by many technicians. This change is in the grading system of abrasives. For years, there was only one method of classifying abrasives; this was the CAMI or Coated Abrasives Manufacturer’s Institute system. This system allows larger percentages of grits other than the one labeled to be on the sandpaper. For example, a piece of 400 grit paper could contain some 360 grit and 500 grit particles and still be labeled as 400 grit. A second system is the FEPA — or Federation of European Producers Association — grading system. This European system, which uses a designator of P before the grit number, has a much tighter tolerance regarding grit sizes. The P (FEPA) papers have become the grit system that is most often called for in paint makers’ recommendations. Shop personnel should read, understand and follow recommendations by the paint system used in selecting grits. Actual grit sizes in the US grading system (CAMI) and the European system (FEPA) are similar up to about 220, but from that point on they vary greatly. For example, CAMI 240 grit is equal to FEPA 280, and CAMI 600 is equal to FEPA 1200. To make things even more confusing, there are two additional sandpaper grit systems: the Japanese Grading System (JIS), which does not use a designator, and the Micron grading system that uses a µ symbol following the grit number. All of these grading systems can be confusing, and if there is no chart handy to tell which one is the correct grit for a particular task, it is best to follow the paint maker’s recommendations. When a shop indiscriminately orders 400 grit paper, its technicians may not be getting the correct paper for the job at hand. Therefore, if the recommendation is to use P500 to P600 for final sanding to get the desired results, the shop should be careful to purchase P-rated paper for the paint technician to use.
The recommended method of sanding should also be followed. In fact, many paint manufacturers recommend a different grit when dry sanding by hand than when a technician chooses to wet sand. Some also have different machine sanding recommendations for wet sanding than for dry. As an example, the recommendation may be P 600-800 grit for wet sanding by hand, and P 400-500 for dry sanding by hand. When using a machine, the recommendation may be wet P 500-600 grit, and dry P 400-500 grit. As machine sanding is the more common method of sanding, technicians should be careful not to assume that the sandpaper grit they use when hand sanding will be the same as when they machine sand. A discussion about sanding and abrasives is not complete without talking about a prep cart. Rolling up to the job with a prep cart containing everything that is needed to complete the job, significantly reduces the time needed. The cart should be stocked at the start of the day with all the needed sandpapers, scuff pads, sanding paste, tape, etc. Blocking: Power vs. hand Ok, I was one of those guys you will see on the Internet “doing it my way.” I will admit that this one took me a while to try and accept. For years I thought that those who tried to block with a DA were technicians that were less concerned about a quality finish. I believed that it was impossible to make a non-wavy, smooth, flat finish without blocking by hand — wet. In fact, in cases when I was super-concerned about getting a show quality finish, I would paint-stick block the primer with a sprayed-on guide coat. This may have still been the case today, if some significant changes had not come about, such as better DAs. Even in the face of all the articles online stating that you can only get a flat blocking by hand, I now respectfully disagree.
grits of P400 or greater, help with sanding control. Also dry guide coat, which doesn’t clog the finer grit paper as fast, should be used. Yes, there is a learning curve, and you may not get the result that you’re looking for the first time you try it; but with a little practice it can be achieved. The key points are that first you use guide coat, even though you have been sanding for a long time and don’t think you need it. The guide coat will help you see when to stop sanding. One of the most common mistakes made is sanding more than necessary. The guide coat shows you just when to stop — do not continue to sand after all the guide coat had been removed. If you do, it turns the surface into a wavy mess. Another common mistake is not holding the DA flat to the surface. The better you get at holding the DA flat to the surface you are sanding and not topping over the edge or riding over body lines, the better you will become at power blocking. A fine-finish DA pad and a finish DA with the correct size pattern are also essential. Lastly, recognise that the technique for sanding is also important. The surface should be sanded completely in one direction, such as left to right, and then in the opposite direction. When the entire surface has been sanded in both directions, check it again. If more sanding is needed, repeat the process. The tool should be started ON the work surface and stopped with the tool OFF the work surface to keep from leaving marks. The sanding should be undertaken with light operator hand pressure on the tool. For those who prefer, there are 3” by 4” orbital sanders that may be used to help in the blocking process.
Hand blocking with sprayed-on guide coat, either wet or dry, has been replaced by use of a painter’s DA’s (a DA with a circular pattern that is best suited to power blocking). Interface pads, which should be used with

DA types DAs have for some time come with different handles, with different sanding pattern sizes, and different pad sizes and shapes. Though they may all look similar, they can be very different. To help on DA pattern size: 3/32 DA = 3/32 1/8 = 2/16 = 4/32 3/16 = 6/32 5/16 = 10/32 3/8 = 6/16 = 12/32
• Abrasives • Blocking: Power vs. hand • DA types • Handles • Sanding pattern • Interface pads • Guide coat
Handles The older DA with the handle that came down from the body is still a very good tool when used for the correct job. Many body men prefer this type of DA handle, because it is very aggressive. It is great when stripping paint and sanding plastic body filler. However, for better control when finish sanding, the palm DA is by far the superior of the two. The palm DA can be held flatter (with the non-palm sanders it is more difficult to keep the DA’s surface even), and it is also easier to control the amount of pressure on the tool, which should be light and steady. Sanding pattern DAs now come in a staggering array of different sanding patterns such as 3/32, 1/8, 3/16, 5/16, and 3/8. Which is best for a painter? The smaller pattern will leave a smoother finish than the more aggressive one, but it will take longer. Many painters have two DAs — they use one for blocking, say a 1/8 (4/32) or a 3/16 (6/32). They may then have a very fine 3/32 for sanding with very fine paper (P1000 to P5000) when preparing for buffing, but that is another subject, to look into another time. So if you have a DA now and it is not marked, how do you find out what size it is? You can test the pattern size by placing a piece of paper on it and lightly touching a pencil to it as it runs freely. DAs made specifically for painters have a smoother operating path and tighter pattern, and are suited for power prep, or dry blocking. Also, as the environmental laws change and more areas are mandating the removal of drains in shops, wet sanding may become more difficult. Therefore, dry sanding with vacuum pickup or
PAGE 56
sanding in prep decks may become a paint shop’s only option. Interface pads These are pads that fit between the DA pad and the paper; they also make the cutting action of the DA less aggressive over high crowns. If a technician does not use pads like these, it is more likely that a cut-through over the high crowns will result. With the use of “interface pads,” as 3M calls theirs, the surface of the sandpaper is cooler, which extends the life of the pad, especially on finer grit paper. With the use of a guide coat, a DA and pad quickly sands smooth areas over featheredged surfaces, as well as over body filler. If imperfections such as sand scratches or contour mapping are present, they are soon evident, and the continued blocking can be concentrated on the area until it is corrected. Following the first sanding, a second guide coat can be applied and a finer sanding can quickly be undertaken to ensure that all scratches are removed and the proper grit finish is obtained. Guide coat Guide coats have been used for many years, but weren’t always. Even when an aerosol spray can was used, it needed time to dry and would load up the sandpaper quickly; thus, many technicians didn’t use it. Dry guide coat, though, can be quickly applied and immediately sanded with no appreciable increase of paper loading. Its new convenience virtually eliminates any reason not to use it. Guide coats quickly and visually reveal any imperfections in the repair, so even a novice technician can see when the surface is properly prepared. Good planning eliminates wasted time and materials, and can virtually eliminate paint flaws due to poor prep. We can produce the needed flawless surface in a shorter amount of time with the use of rolled primer, finish DA, dry guide coat, and fast and clean application of glaze. In fact, if the body technicians either significantly reduce or eliminate pinholes by mixing body filler without air bubbles and use dry guide coat when sanding body filler (thus making it flatter and smoother), glaze may not be needed as much in the paint department to prepare the surface for refinishing.
