Toolbox developed for Farmers Distributor Bearings International (BI) and Gondolier, importer of Jonnesway Professional Tools, have collaborated on a toolbox aimed at the specific requirements of the agricultural industry. This comprehensive toolbox, containing Jonnesway Professional Tools selected by farmers for farmers, was unveiled officially at Grain SA’s NAMPO Harvest Day in May last year at Bothaville in the Free State. It has subsequently become a key offering under BI’s Agri-Smart banner for integrated solutions for the agricultural industry, Product Manager Hilton Woest explains that the toolbox features spanners, screwdrivers, an electric current testing pen, pliers, punches, files, a hacksaw with spare blades, and a large hammer, all contained in a compact and sturdy case that can fit comfortably behind the seat of any bakkie. Gondolier media and events co-ordinator Christie Brill highlights the successful eight-year partnership with BI. “We have an exclusive Jonnesway distribution network across the entire sub-Saharan Africa region, and have appointed Jonnesway distribution partner BI to focus on the industrial, agricultural, and manufacturing markets. Apart from BI’s local network, which covers all the major farming communities, it also has an extensive footprint in Africa.” A large range from Jonnesway’s international catalogue is being used in Africa. “Jonnesway Professional Tools is developing constantly, which allows us to specialise in customised toolkits, working together with BI to ensure that we provide our customers with complete solutions.”

PAGE 6

.

This is where the idea came about to develop a special toolbox for the farming community in particular. “We have pursued an important particular objective: providing customers with the right quality and right selection of tools, which has a massive impact on time, productivity, and ultimately profitability,” Brill highlights. Both companies are involved in continuous developments for both customers and distributors, to enable access to select portals in order to view information about used-with items, promotional notifications, and in-depth product information such as exploded-view diagrams. Woest adds that BI will continue to foster its long-standing relationship with Jonnesway by means of flexible stock checks, which means identifying the fastest-moving items, and ensuring adequate stockholding countrywide, or identifying any gaps in the product line-up that need to be filled. “Our aim is always to be able to provide our customers with an optimal solution tailored to their specific needs.”

Groupe PSA to test autonomous cars in China Groupe PSA in late January, obtained a licence to start autonomous driving tests on open roads in China (Chongqing), the first French carmaker to do so in China. The group explains that its autonomous car experience in Europe helps it to adapt to the local environment to meet Chinese market needs. It adds however, that the challenge is to integrate Groupe PSA’s technology into the Chinese ecosystem with special cases since the environment, infrastructure, map system and road users are different. The group is the first car manufacturer to have tested the autonomous

car on open roads in France from July 2015 onwards, as well as the first carmaker to obtain the authorisations to carry out autonomous mode tests with “non-expert” drivers in March 2017. Carla Gohin, Vice President, Innovation of Groupe PSA, commented: “Obtaining the license for autonomous driving tests on open roads in China is a remarkable milestone for Groupe PSA, as China is the largest automobile market in the world and is witnessing the boom in the development of autonomous driving technology. He concluded by saying “This marks an important step for our AVA ‘Autonomous Vehicle for All’ program, which aims to provide safe and intuitive autonomous cars for all customers. From this fresh start, we’ll continuously bring our cutting edge technology to Chinese customers.

No time for a ‘wait and see’ approach in SA manufacturing Foreign investors and SA industry players seem to be taking a ‘wait and see’ approach to industrial and manufacturing growth, putting the country at risk of falling behind its neighbours. However, investment in automation now could help boost the manufacturing sector, with benefits for the country’s overall economic growth. That’s according to automation industry stakeholders, speaking ahead of Africa Automation Fair 2019. Frikkie Streicher, Business Development Manager at Vega, says automation and Industry 4.0 presents huge opportunities for SA to start exploiting and beneficiating its natural resources costeffectively and efficiently. “Automation could address challenges across industries – boosting manufacturing production and reducing injuries... but the industry has been slow to invest, for several reasons. There are concerns about SA’s political landscape, potential job losses and their impact on labour forces, and infrastructure challenges. Large-scale investment in smart manufacturing won’t take place in an environment not perceived to be stable.”

PAGE 8

He adds many industries are battling funding challenges. “It’s unfortunate that we are failing to embrace advanced automation, because the opportunities are vast, especially in the SA context where we have lagged so far behind the world. We risk being overtaken on the continent by North Africa and investor-friendly countries such as Ghana, Rwanda and Mauritius. SA needs to simultaneously create a stable landscape for investors, build out critical infrastructure and get our workforces up to speed to become globally competitive.” Dave Wibberley, MD at Adroit Technologies, adds: “We can put down intelligent sensors and cloud technologies, but unless a manufacturer is embracing world-class manufacturing models, eliminating waste and driving value flow, Industry 4.0 tools and technologies will not be truly transformative.” Wibberley says SA manufacturing leaders at this stage are typically those in the automotive industry, with international principals, and not local companies.

New multi-collision airbag in development for KIA Kia Motors has announced the development of a new multicollision airbag, which, it explains, is designed to significantly improve airbag performance in multi-collision accidents. Multi-collision accidents are those in which the primary impact is followed by collisions with secondary objects, such as other vehicles, trees, or electrical posts, which occur in three out of every 10 accidents.

“By improving airbag performance in multi-collision scenarios, we expect to significantly improve the safety of our drivers and passengers,” said Taesoo Chi, head of the Hyundai Motor Group’s Chassis Technology Centre. “We will continue our research on more diverse crash situations as part of our commitment to producing even safer vehicles that protect occupants and prevent injuries.”

Current airbag systems do not offer secondary protection, when the initial impact is insufficient to cause them to deploy. However, the multi-collision airbag system allows airbags to deploy effectively upon a secondary impact by calibrating the status of the vehicle and the occupants.

Once commercialised, the system is expected to be implemented in future new KIA vehicles.

The new technology works by detecting occupants’ positions in the cabin following an initial collision. When occupants are forced into unusual positions, the effectiveness of existing safety technology may be compromised. Multi-collision airbag systems are designed to deploy even faster when initial safety systems may not be effective, providing additional safety when drivers and passengers are most vulnerable. By recalibrating the collision intensity required for deployment, the airbag system responds more promptly during the secondary impact, thereby improving the safety of multi-collision vehicle occupants.

Ford’s 25 human aid projects from 2018 Ford employees and dealers devoted their time to helping others in 2018. A total of 25 projects were conducted across the Sub-Saharan region, with thousands of man hours dedicated to improving lives and assisting impoverished communities in South Africa, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Mozambique and Uganda. “Ford Global Caring Month is our flagship community initiative each year, and it was fantastic to witness the exceptional level of energy and enthusiasm from our employees, dealers and distributors that went into the 2018 projects,” said Neale Hill, managing director of Ford Motor Company Sub-Saharan Africa Region. Education was the main focus of many of the projects completed in South Africa, with employees from the Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria and the Struandale Engine Plant in Port Elizabeth dedicating their time to improve crèches, early learning centres, schools and skills development facilities in impoverished communities. This was bolstered by the creation of vegetable gardens and the repair of hydroponic tunnels for schools and

community feeding schemes, as well as the construction of recycling facilities and conducting environmental clean-up and education campaigns. Ford dealers in South Africa also played their part, with Barloworld Ford in Tygervalley, Cape Town, painting and decorating shipping containers that are used as clinics and classrooms, as well as developing gardens around the facility. Ritchie Auto in Richards Bay set out to refurbish the local Autism Treatment Centre, and also set up a fully equipped computer learning centre. In Sub-Saharan Africa markets, Ford and its local distributor in Ethiopia, Ries Engineering collaborated with The Muday Association on a project that aims to uplift and improve the quality of life for 1 050 single mothers and children in the local community. Other projects included addressing deforestation in Madagascar, providing assistance to improve the living conditions of elderly residents at a nursing home for the underprivileged in Mozambique, and a project aimed at uplifting and improving the quality of life for children and young people with disabilities in Uganda.

Breakeven point key for car “downsizing” According to vehicle finance company Wesbank, many South African motorists who are feeling the burden of inflation, soaring fuel prices, the recent repo rate hike and last year’s VAT increase are now considering moving into more cost-effective cars. They warn however, that the transition alone can be costly and there’s certainly an optimum time to trade in a car.

The breakeven point in an ownership cycle varies on a case-bycase basis and is affected by factors such as missed payments, extra payments, the size of a deposit and depreciation of respective vehicles. It’s possible to bring the breakeven point forward by putting down larger deposits and financing over shorter loan periods.

Lower monthly repayments and fuel bills will ease the pressure on household finances, but motorists can forget the significant losses that can be made by trading a car at the “wrong time”. The best time to trade in a vehicle is when the trade value is in line with the settlement amount owed to the bank it’s financed with - the breakeven point. Trading in before this time could see a consumer paying in, just to get out of the finance contract.

The new vehicle market is extremely competitive and many manufacturers offer incentives to help buyers settle outstanding balances. These trade in assistance programs can make up for some shortfall for motorists who have not quite reached their breakeven point, essentially buying them some time in the ownership cycle.

WesBank’s data shows the majority of vehicle finance contracts are in place for six years or 72 months. In these cases, a breakeven point would normally arrive at between 24 and 36 months, depending on the size of the deposit at time of sale.

PAGE 12

The country’s underperforming economy, however, means manufacturers are spending less on these marketing schemes so it’s worthwhile to shop around in order to find the best deals. Patience is key in any car buying journey – whether it’s trading up or down, or for first-time car buyers.

Even more bad news as road fatality statistics released The 2018/2019 festive season crash and fatality statistics were released in mid January and disappointingly showed a 5.6% increase in the death toll compared to the same period last year. Transport Minister, Dr Blade Nzimande, provided a number of reasons for the high death toll including drinking and driving, recklessness and negligence – including unsafe overtaking – as well as distraction, fatigue, unroadworthy vehicles and stray animals. The managing director of MasterDrive, Eugene Herbert, says it is noteworthy that the highest number of deaths occurred amongst passengers. “While there are various reasons for this, now is a good time to also consider the role of passengers in ensuring they make it to their destination safely. The misconception that only front passengers need to wear a seatbelt persists. Every passenger needs to make a point to wear their safety belt and drivers should also check that everyone is buckled up before even starting the car. “Passengers also need to play their role in assisting the driver. This can be as a second set of eyes, reducing distractions for the driver or ensuring that they stop regularly for breaks. If a passenger is not confident in the way their driver is driving, rather express your concern than lose your life. Road safety is the responsibility of every road user and should be given the highest priority by all.”

Once again reckless driving has played a major role in the tragedy on the roads. “We repeatedly stress the importance of each driver accepting responsibility for their own role in the state of our roads. Until each organisation and person commits to obeying the laws of the road, drives courteously and puts genuine effort into becoming a safe driver, we are unlikely to ever see any real and consistent change to these statistics.” “It is a pity that we have regressed from the improvements seen last year. It is even more tragic that so many lives will be affected by the state of the roads this festive season. Our thoughts and condolences go out to every Surely in a country like SA where our statistics are so ridiculously high and compunded by the fact that so many cars have many passengers - a campaign directed at passengers also needs to be explored? If a driver is driving recklessly the passengers surely need to refuse to let them carry on behaving that way. Its time to come up with other plans when the proof is clear from all to see the current campaigns have no effect on our statistics at all. Passengers and pedestrians make up a high percentage of the victims - why not educate and empower them? Their own lives are being toyed with and they seem not to mind!

Mahindra grows SA presence and promises new dealers Mahindra announced in January that it had capped its best year yet with its highest monthly sales ever in December, including a new sales record for the calendar year. The automaker confirmed the sale of 440 new Mahindra SUVs and pick-ups in December, bringing its tally for the full year to 5 486 new vehicles. “Breaking through the 5 000 barrier in 2018 culminated in a very busy year for Mahindra,” says Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa. “During the year, we firmly entrenched our position as a truly South African company with the opening of our first assembly plant north of Durban. The sales growth of both our locally produced Pik Up models and SUV range has subsequently skyrocketed.”

PAGE 14

According to Naamsa, Mahindra grew by 26% in 2018, while the overall new vehicle market shrunk by 1%. Last year, the carmaker celebrated SA as its second home outside of India. “For the year ahead, we hope to grow at an even faster pace. We will utilise the flexibility that our local assembly facility offers to introduce new models and special editions of the Pik Up and will soon launch a brand-new model in one of South Africa’s fastest growing vehicle segments,” says Gupta. “Mahindra will also invest in the expansion of its dealer network, starting with a new dealer location in Cape Town and an additional dealer in Johannesburg in January.”

PowerMax Turbo upgrade for Ranger 3.2’s TurboDirect has launched an upgrade for the 2011 -2015 Ford Ranger 3.2’s and claims increased overall performance, and flow by 20% - boosting power from 147 to 172kW The Honeywell Garrett PowerMax turbocharger, available exclusively from TurboDirect S.A, is a direct fit Turbo Charger designed for the 3.2L Duratorq 5-cylinder diesel engine platform found in the 2011 – 2015 Ford Ranger PX and Mazda BT-50 (aka pre-facelift model). This forged, fully machined compressor wheel design stemmed from the ball bearing GTX Gen II product line, increases flow by 20% over the OE wheel. The revised turbine wheel and turbine housing makes this turbocharger a completely new redesigned unit, which is unlike the popular hybrid upgrade turbochargers. The hybrid is simply a larger compressor wheel with no turbine improvements. With the correct engine calibration, this enables the engine to be tuned up to 172Kw from OE standard of 147kW. All Honeywell Garrett PowerMax direct fit turbo chargers are outline interchangeable with the OE turbo charger ensuring a perfect fit. Adding some hardware compliment upgrades like exhaust, intake, and intercooler, will allow power levels of around 200KW to be achievable.

PAGE 16

This GTX Gen II compressor wheel aerodynamics has a wider compressor map for improved performance and 20% more flow than the OE turbocharger. “This upgrade fitted exclusively through TurboDirect S.A will only cost R15 500.00 ex vat and includes oil, oil filter, as well as new OEM gaskets” explains Chris Kambouris founder and Managing Director of TurboDirect S.A. Ford and VW launch global alliance Volkswagen AG and Ford Motor Company announced their first formal agreements in a broad alliance that positions the companies to boost competitiveness and better serve customers in an era of rapid change in the industry.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Volkswagen CEO Dr. Herbert Diess and Ford CEO Jim Hackett confirmed that the companies intend to develop commercial vans and medium-sized pickups for global markets beginning as early as 2022.

PAGE 18

The alliance will drive significant scale and efficiencies and enable both companies to share investments in vehicle architectures that deliver distinct capabilities and technologies. The companies estimate the commercial van and pickup cooperation will yield improved annual pre-tax operating results, starting in 2023. In addition, Volkswagen and Ford have signed a memorandum of understanding to investigate collaboration on autonomous vehicles, mobility services and electric vehicles. Both companies have started to explore opportunities, and they have also said they were open to considering additional vehicle programmes in the future. The teams will continue working through details in the coming months. “Over time, this alliance will help both companies create value and meet the needs of our customers and society,” said Hackett. “It will not only drive significant efficiencies and help both companies improve their fitness, but also gives us the opportunity to collaborate on shaping the next era of mobility.” Diess added: “Volkswagen and Ford will harness our collective resources, innovation capabilities and complementary market positions to even better serve millions of customers around the

world. At the same time, the alliance will be a cornerstone for our drive to improve competitiveness”. The alliance, which does not entail cross-ownership between the two companies, will be governed by a joint committee. This committee will be led by Hackett and Diess along with including senior executives from both companies. Ford and Volkswagen both have strong commercial van and pickup businesses around the globe, with popular nameplates such as the Ford Transit family and Ranger as well as the Volkswagen Transporter, Caddy and Amarok. The companies’ collective light commercial vehicle volumes from 2018 totalled approximately 1.2 million units globally, which could represent the industry’s highest-volume collaboration as production scales. Demand for both medium pickups and commercial vans is expected to grow globally in the next five years. The alliance will enable the companies to share development costs, leverage their respective manufacturing capacity, boost the capability and competitiveness of their vehicles and deliver cost efficiencies, while maintaining distinct brand characteristics. Through the alliance, Ford will engineer and build medium-sized pickups for both companies which are expected to go to market as early as 2022. For both parties, Ford intends to engineer and build larger commercial vans for European customers, and Volkswagen intends to develop and build a city van.

WORLD’S FIRST DIAGNOSTIC TYRE CHANGER Experts Choice! ANALYSES

During the usual mounting and demounting of the tyres, it analyses the geometry of the rim and the uniformity of the tyre (radial and side rigidity, and any geometric deformation) that may cause, above all, vibrations while driving.

MATCH-MOUNTING It solves any irregularity by optimising the coupling position of the rim and tyre (match-mounting), the only real solution to this problem, avoiding the pointless use of the tyre changer and wheel balancer. Uniformity is the first technology that allows match-mounting to be carried out directly on the tyre changer, transforming it into a real wheel diagnosis centre. Essential for the professional who wants to provide clients with a first-class service.

CEO, Jakkie Olivier, says that the organisation has received around 60 applications from businesses to join the National African Association for Automobile Services Providers NAAASP. “Once members, these businesses will be eligible to join the transformation project, which has been running for seven months now.” He adds that ultimately they would like the project to reach 150 businesses. “What’s exciting is that we already have four businesses that are close to compliance to become fullyaccredited members of the RMI.” Joy Oldale, transformation director for the RMI, says the project has been met with much enthusiasm from the sector. “These business owners are passionate about what they do and want the opportunity and support to enter the formal sector. Unfortunately, many are semi-skilled and have not had the opportunity to receive any qualifications,” she says. As part of the project, these businesses will be registered on the New Venture Creation (NCV) L2 and, through an incubator approach with mentors and coaches, will need to complete the required credits to receive a qualification.

PAGE 20

The project will also assist the members with a business plan, funding, training staff, and ensuring the property and business meets all compliance criteria. Oldale explains that the RMI is working closely with the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) and Small Enterprise Finance Agency (SEFA) on this project. “We have done roadshows with SEDA and SEFA and conducted surveys to understand the challenges and what needs to be done. Now we are in the implementation phase. Already we are seeing great results so watch this space.” Transformation of the sector is a priority for the RMI, says Olivier. “There is so much potential for job creation and new businesses. Our NAAASP members are spread over 10 regions including Pretoria, Virginia, Port Elizabeth, Durban, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Rosslyn, Polokwane and Vaal Triangle. All of these areas face unemployment issues. Through this project and those to follow we will start to see change,” he concludes.

The future of driving - according to Nissan Nissan made use of the 2019 CES trade show to unveil its future vision for a vehicle that helps drivers “see the invisible”. The automaker explains that this is made possible by merging both real and virtual worlds, creating the ultimate connected-car experience. “By helping you see the invisible, I2V enhances your confidence and makes driving more enjoyable,” said Tetsuro Ueda, an Invisible-to-Visible, or I2V, is a future technology created by expert leader at the Nissan Research Centre. “The interactive Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the company’s vision for changing features create an experience that’s tailored to your interests how cars are powered, driven and integrated into society. I2V is powered by Nissan’s Omni-Sensing technology, which acts as a hub gathering real-time data from the traffic I2V works by merging information from sensors both outside environment and from the vehicle’s surroundings and interior. and inside the vehicle, with data from the cloud. This SAM (Seamless Autonomous Mobility) technology analyses the enables the system not only to track the vehicle’s immediate road environment through relevant real-time information, and surroundings but also to anticipate what’s ahead – even showing what’s behind a building or around the corner. To make the ProPILOT semiautonomous driver support system provides information about the car’s surroundings. driving more enjoyable, guidance is given in an interactive, human-like way, such as through avatars that appear inside the The technology maps a 360-degree virtual space around the car car. to provide information about things like road and intersection status, visibility, signage or nearby pedestrians. I2V can also connect drivers and passengers to people in the Metaverse virtual world. This makes it possible for family, friends or others to appear inside the car as three- dimensional, augmented-reality avatars to provide company or assistance. Talk about movies becoming reality! And it can go even further to make drivers enjoy their experience even more – such as projecting the scenery of a sunny day inside the vehicle, when it is raining outside. When visiting a new place, the system can search within the Metaverse for a knowledgeable local guide who can communicate with people in the vehicle in real time. Information provided by the guide can be collected with OmniSensing and stored in the cloud so that others visiting the same area can access the useful guidance. It can also be used by the onboard artificial intelligence system to provide a more efficient drive through local areas. During manual driving, I2V provides information from Omni-Sensing as an overlay in the driver’s full field of view. The information helps drivers assess and prepare for things like corners with poor visibility, irregular road surface conditions or oncoming traffic.

The professional driver appears as a projected avatar or as a virtual chase car in the driver’s field of vision to demonstrate the best way to drive. Nissan adds that I2V will also be able to display information about congestion and estimated travel time; it can communicate unique details to better inform the driver about the road ahead, removing unknowns to ease driving stress. I2V will give alternative suggestions, even down to the best-moving lane in heavy traffic, by using real-time local data mapping via Omni- Sensing. Upon arrival at a destination, I2V can access SAM to scan for parking spaces and park the vehicle for the driver in situations requiring difficult parking manoeuvres.

The driver can also book a professional driver from the Metaverse to get personal instruction in real time.

New driverless tyre testing Continental has commissioned the first driverless tyre test vehicle for a wide range of road surface types, at the company’s test site in Uvalde, Texas, in the U.S.A. The focus of the new testing is to make the test results for Continental’s passenger and light truck tires more conclusive and minimise the impact of the test procedure on the results. The vehicle is based on Continental’s automated Cruising Chauffeur, developed for freeways. The test vehicle is controlled using a satellite-based navigation system and is equipped with camera and radar sensors, enabling it to react immediately to people, animals, or other unexpected objects on the track, even without a driver. “In critical situations, the tyres’ level of technology is the deciding factor in whether a vehicle brakes in time,” explains Nikolai Setzer, member of the Continental Executive Board and head of the Tyre division. “With tyre tests which use an automated vehicle, we achieve highly conclusive test results and thereby ensure the premium quality of our tyres.” The company admits that one of the challenging tasks in tyre production is to carry out quality tests while tyres are in use. Newly developed rubber compounds and tyre models have to be tested under real life conditions, showing how well they perform on gravel roads, for example. Driving the test vehicles places huge demands on the drivers, as even the smallest deviations on the test track can have a huge impact on the quality and comparability of the test results.

Thomas Sych, head of Tyre Testing at Continental, explains: “The automated vehicle enables us to reproduce processes precisely, meaning that every tyre in the test experiences exactly the same conditions. This way, we can be sure that differences in the test are actually caused by the tyres and not by the test procedure.” In addition to the significantly improved comparability of the results, the tyre test using automated vehicles will also reduce the maintenance work required for the test tracks. Because the vehicle is sent on a route that varies by just a few centimeters each time, the test track is subjected to less wear and tear, thus requiring considerably less maintenance. “Thanks to close collaboration with colleagues from many different areas of Continental, we have made a lot of progress with our prototype for the tyre test. Our focus now is on further developing the necessary camera and radar systems for this special case of off-road routes, so that the vehicle can react appropriately when people, animals, or other vehicles unexpectedly appear on the route,” explains Sych. “We know from our own research, such as the Continental Mobility Studies, that trust is extremely important for the mobility of the future. We are fully aware of this responsibility when developing these new technologies.”

R2R expands across industries As South Africa is preparing for implementation of an (R2R), the European Union, United States and other countries are starting to implement R2R in other industries. “The concept and principles of R2R started in the motor industry more than 20 years ago in the EU and US. The same concepts and principles are now being implemented in many industries from computers and cell phones to washing machines and agricultural machinery,” says Gunther Schmitz, Chairman of the Section-21 company, Right to Repair South Africa (R2RSA). The growing inability of the consumer to repair products is leading to increased waste, with electronic waste now one of the most rapidly growing parts of the waste stream. The UN estimates that 60 million tons of electronic waste is generated each year and Americans alone throw out 416,000 smartphones every day. To deal with this growing concern, the European Parliament has approached the EU Commission, member states and producers with several recommendations. One includes that consumers should have the option of going to an independent repairer. Technical, safety or software solutions which prevent repairs from being performed, other than by approved firms or bodies, should be discouraged. Other points include that essential components, such as batteries and LEDs, should not be fixed into products, unless for safety reasons; and spare parts which are indispensable for the proper and safe functioning of the goods should be made available at a price commensurate with the nature and life-time of the product. In the US, until 2013, carmakers routinely kept vital diagnostic and repair tools out of the hands of independent workshops, despite protests from the industry and attempts at legislation to make the practice illegal. Massachusetts then passed automotive right-to-repair legislation, and within a few months carmakers agreed to use the state’s rules as a national standard. This change is said to have set a benchmark for other industries. “While R2R was originally driven by independent workshops and parts manufacturers we now see consumer rights groups

PAGE 26

and environmental organisations supporting the Right to Repair. This confirms that the positive benefits for the consumer, the environment and the economy are being acknowledged globally and cross industries. It also supports R2RSA’s view that the right to repair is a basic right in any economy and is becoming the international norm, not the exception, as manufacturers and dealers in SA would like us to believe,” he says. “The reality is that if we don’t see change in the motor industry, we could be facing a time, in the not so distant future, where consumers who can’t afford to have their cars repaired at a dealer will simple not be able to have their cars repaired. This is because affordable independent repairers won’t have the information, tools or training to repair cars as more and more components become coded,” explains Schmitz. “And what will happen to these vehicles that, simply, the owner can’t afford to repair? Sold, scrapped, who knows…” He says this is why the Right to Repair campaign is calling for transparency when it comes to access to information, tools and training so the aftermarket can be well-equipped to service cars in or out of warranty. “Independent workshops are more than happy to buy this information at a reasonable price. Right now, however, this is not an option in South Africa. In Europe, for example, this information is housed in a data cloud and workshops have access through an interface on a subscription basis. The information also includes essential service information from the OEMs so mechanics have all the tips at their disposal.” “While R2RSA is focusing on the automotive repair market, we embrace the right to repair conceptually across other industries as we believe that this will be positive for the consumer in terms of choice and will lead to a more competitive economy.” Schmitz says the code of conduct, due to be published soon, will encourage much-needed progress.

Latest VPI shows continuing challenges for car makers and dealers The latest TransUnion Africa Vehicle Pricing Index has been released, and the new report highlights the role of the constrained economy, a VAT hike, and petrol price increases, in pushing VPI below inflation for the 6th consecutive quarter, although the outlook for 2019 is looking more positive. According to TransUnion, new and used vehicle prices showed an annual increase of 2.5% and 1.6% respectively in Q4 of 2018. There was a small increase in the rate of growth for new vehicles, which had an annual rate of price inflation of 2.4% a year earlier (Q4 2017), but was a marked decrease in the rate of price inflation for used vehicles which stood 3.5% in Q4 2017. This was, however, lower than consumer price inflation over the same period, which ended on 4.5% in December and followed a high of 5.2% in November 2018.

improve: “Even when the consumer decides to proceed with a purchase, it is often at a lower price point, which places pressure on manufacturers and dealers and erodes their profit margins.”

VPI also revealed that new and used passenger vehicle finance deals decreased year-on-year by 7% and 15% respectively, while the used-to-new ratio decreased from 2.22 in Q4 2017 to 2.03 in Q4 2018. Total financial agreement volumes in the passenger vehicle market also decreased by 12% between Q4 2018 and Q4 2017.

“Thirty-nine percent of used vehicle sales during the period were for cars that were less than two years old, while 10% were for demo models. In the South African market, there is a significant price differential between new and used vehicles, so demo models and used vehicles less than two years old offer attractive alternatives to purchasing a new vehicle – especially as the baseline price of new vehicles now sits at the R200 000 to R300 000 band,” adds Reddy.

Commenting on the results, Kriben Reddy, Head of TransUnion Auto in Africa, said: “Challenging economic conditions have seen manufacturers reduce the price of new vehicles in real terms as a way of stimulating sales. It is important to consider the overall cost of owning a vehicle not just the purchase price. Factors such as household disposable income and consumer confidence are also part of the changing dynamics of the vehicle market.” Consumer confidence is key The latest consumer confidence data* released in January held steady after a substantial deterioration in confidence levels across all income groups were recorded in November 2018. Reddy confirms that low consumer confidence levels have a direct impact on whether a consumer will consider entering into the buying cycle or wait for conditions to

PAGE 30

According to the latest TransUnion Africa Vehicle Price Index report, the percentage of new and used vehicles being financed below R200 000 now stands at 37% – marginally up from last quarter’s 36% – and mostly consist of used cars.

After fuel prices surged to record highs in October 2018, consumers saw some relief in January 2019 when prices fell by more than R1 per litre. Reddy explains: “Although further fuel price drops are expected, this is unlikely to have a significant impact on vehicle sales. Aside from the increase in VAT, a depreciating Rand and slow economic growth, consumers also face the looming prospect of electricity tariff increases as an embattled Eskom tries to recover.” The latest figures from NAAMSA showed total new vehicle sales had declined by 1% year-on-year, although export sales have consistently recorded growth. The automotive industry is a substantial driver of the country’s economy and contributes 7.7% to South Africa’s annual GDP.

“Unless broader economic growth is stimulated, the automotive sector won’t see a significant improvement in the near term,” continues Reddy. “There are only so many levers manufacturers can use to stimulate market demand, including pricing, marketing incentives, trade-in assistance and tools such as residual value that can ease the pressure on consumers’ cash flow. However, measures such as residual value can add up over time and push consumers out of the buying cycle. At a dealer level, there are indications that the market is swinging toward used vehicles, which tend to have a larger margin than new vehicle sales. After-sales service is also a potential growth area for dealers and can ease the pressure from lower sales while the market recovers.”

Reasons for optimism Despite the challenges currently facing the market, Reddy believes there is reason to be optimistic: “The latest GDP figures show encouraging signs of an economic turnaround, which should translate into improved consumer confidence and better trading conditions. While new vehicle sales are likely to show flat or marginal growth in 2019, there is potential for improved growth in the used car market provided quality stock is available. Dealers will need be cognisant of consumers that are struggling with constrained cash flow and indebtedness – offers will need to be tailored accordingly.”

CHRIS TALKS TURBOS

AutoForum - January / February 2019

What to do if you are having Turbo Problems -By Chris Kambouris

This could well be the turbocharger itself, or perhaps something within the engine causing the problem so it needs to be checked first before replacing the turbocharger, many turbo’s can be repaired, and/or parts replaced. Many vehicle owners and workshops have little knowledge of turbochargers and the correct procedure in identifying if the problems and causes of turbo failures, so it’s advisable to get expert advice from trained personnel. This is invariably from the company that holds the official agency for all the brands of turbocharger’s installed as original equipment (OE) in the vehicle. The OE turbocharger fitted to your vehicle when it was displayed on the showroom floor can be replaced or repaired, if required at approximately 50% less than the vehicle agents charge for the identical unit. This excludes cars that are still under warranty - as they may have the cars turbo covered in their service or maintenance plan. What usually happens to the other vehicles is that the car will arrive at the workshop and several things could happen. 1. The turbo is replaced at high cost, without checking what caused the turbo to fail - which could be several reasons originating from the engine itself. Without an accurate diagnosis, the turbo problem could well still exist with the replacement of the new unit. 2. Without an accurate diagnosis of the failure, the turbo may be repaired with replacement parts, but with a lack of the correct experience, knowledge and equipment - this could be a recipe for disaster, leading to another failed turbocharger. 3. The owner will find a new cheap aftermarket turbo which is manufactured to incorrect tolerances and/or materials which will not last another service life, costing him/her more money in the short term. Often these turbochargers do not include any form of warrantee. 4. Other bad options are fitting a reconditioned unit which has not been reassembled with genuine parts. All VNT (variable nozzle turbine aka variable geometry turbochargers) turbocharger manufacturers such as Garrett, BorgWarner etc have a non-repair policy for all their VNT turbochargers. The equipment and intellectual property related to the calibration of these types of turbochargers are not published into the public sector, and because of this no original repair parts are

PAGE 32

available for the repair of these turbos. This includes 99% of the diesel powered passenger vehicles and bakkies on our roads today. 5. Some turbo repairers may use Chinese copied internal parts inside the turbocharger in order to repair/recon or build a service exchange turbocharger. Beware of repaired, service exchange turbochargers for passenger vehicles utilising any form of variable geometry technology. The solution is to obtain the correct technical information from the officially appointed importers and agents for the specific turbocharger. Ensure that the diagnosis of the failure is obtained from qualified persons with the technical expertise and ability before proceeding any further. This diagnosis will determine the path to rectifying the problem and may involve additional work to the engine prior to repair or replacement. Many turbo car owners make these mistakes it ends up costing them a fortune, and their vehicles engine may consequentially be damaged through a turbo failure. As founder, owner and MD of TurboDirect SA, and with more than 20 years’ experience, my team has the technical knowledge and qualified diagnostic ability to offer all the services a customer needs. TurboDirect will accurately diagnose the problem, whatever it may be, and give a full report. We are able to do all the repairs and fitment if required, at affordable prices. Additionally, all work is supported by the manufacturer’s guarantee on both product and workmanship, as we are the official OE agents for all the genuine turbochargers for Southern Africa. PPE expenditure saves lives as well as business costs Failure to adhere to best practices in occupational health and safety can have adverse financial implications for companies, says Anton Zwanepoel, Business Unit Manager at Innovative PPE Solutions, a subsidiary of Innovative Solutions Group. “We have in recent times, seen lawsuits approaching R100 million lodged on behalf of workers who were not properly protected from the hazards inherent in their workplace. Work stoppages and labour disputes arising from safety issues result in hugely inflated production costs and, most importantly, too many lives are lost or wrecked in accidents that never should have happened, because companies compromised on their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) expenditure,” Zwanepoel says.

In recent years, employers have become more aware of the dangers inadequate safety equipment poses on employee wellbeing and the company’s bottom line. During 2015-2016, companies lost over 27 million working hours due to injuries on duty, according to Eurostat. Injuries on duty in South Africa are recorded by the Department of Labour and the Workman’s Compensation Fund. However, there have been calls for a more accurate reporting system to record the number of injuries and claims per annum.

He says organisations should spend between 5% and 10% of their operating costs on initial PPE purchases, which include the likes of comprehensive safety gear for employees, ventilation in the workplace, fire extinguishers and cleaning materials.

But employers often lament the high costs associated with the implementation of safety regulations in the workplace. Choosing to exclude a comprehensive safety plan altogether or opting for unscrupulous suppliers of PPE.

“Global trends show that in the financial year of 2015-2016 there were over 51% of workplace deaths from falling from heights and 50% of serious workplace injuries occurred from slipping and tripping, according to Eurostat”.

“If management is conscious of dangers in the workplace, safety is bound to improve significantly. Safety performance will become value driven and safety excellence will be maintained with the use of proper PPE, together with employees understanding the necessity of PPE in the workplace.”

“PPE has immense benefits for both employers and employee. Employers are less likely to face legal action. Adhering to a solid PPE plan also increases the lack of accidents, which reduces production costs, staff turnover and improves service delivery,” Zwanepoel adds.

“PPE is there to save lives. It is there to prevent injuries. It protects employees in their work

TS spins-off from Honeywell and rebrands as Garrett Honeywell Group announced that its Transportation Systems (TS) business will rebrand itself “Garrett – Advancing Motion”. The Garrett name ties back to Honeywell’s turbo origins in the 1950’s, when entrepreneur and engineer Cliff Garrett led a project team to develop a turbocharger for a Caterpillar D9 crawler tractor which launched in 1954, marking the beginning of the turbocharged era for the automotive industry. Since then, Transportation Systems technologies and innovations have been used by nearly every major global auto maker. The result is approximately 100 million vehicles that use their products, with an average launch rate of 100 new applications annually - across petrol, diesel, natural gas, electric and fuel cell powertrains. Honeywell Transportation Systems has been using the Garrett name to brand its current portfolio of aftermarket replacement and performance upgrade turbochargers for petrol and diesel

passenger and commercial vehicles. The decision was made to name the new company Garrett, acknowledging its long history of innovation, while adding the tag line “ Advancing Motion” to embrace both the future and the broader portfolio of differentiated products and services that Garrett offers its global customers. “There is a strong emotional attachment to the Garrett name, which has stood for pioneering turbo technology for more than 60 years and has made an indelible mark on the driving habits of millions of vehicle owners as well as the history of automotive engine performance,” said Transportation Systems President and CEO Olivier Rabiller. “Moving forward, the Garrett name will continue to be synonymous with turbocharging technologies and also support the tangible progress and investments we have made in electric products, software and connected vehicles, and the future growth we see reshaping our industry.” “We believe the next generation of vehicles will require a complementary mix of high-performance technologies to meet more stringent global environmental standards and demands for safer and more reliable electrified powertrains and connected cars,” said Rabiller. “We see our role as an enabler for redefining and advancing how technology will move people and goods. Garrett Advancing Motion captures both our traditional automotive domain experience as well as our capability for applying cross-industry excellence to solve problems.” “The new company is well-positioned as a global leader in turbocharger technologies with best-in-class engineering capabilities for a broad range of engine types across automobile, truck and other vehicle markets,” says Chris Kambouris founder, owner and MD of TurboDirect SA - the official agents for Garrett Turbo’s in Southern Africa. “It will build upon its established track record as an industry leader by providing innovative solutions helping auto makers develop electrified powertrains with their e-Boosting. solutions and connected vehicles using their software for safe and secure performance. We will be looking at releasing some exciting news and plans going forward into 2019.”

Overview of India’s automotive industry At the annual Motor Industry Association of Zimbabwe congress in November 2018, the Hon. R. Masakui, Ambassador of India in Zimbabwe, captured the delegates attention with his presentation on India’s automotive industry and commitment between the Indian government and the automotive sector to continue with their successful ongoing development plans. Masakui described the Indian auto industry as the world’s 4th largest with sales increasing 9,5% year-on-year in 2017 to 4.02 million units excluding 2-wheel vehicles. India’s commercial vehicle manufacturing ranked 7th globally and automotive exports across the board grew 26,56% during April-July 2018. He said: “India expects to be a leader in the 2 and 4 wheeler market by 2020, with an average growth rate of 3.05% over the period 2016 -2026.” Outlining the market size, Masakui stated that of the 29.07 million vehicles manufactured in the country in the 2018 financial year – sales of 24,97 million were achieved and that between April and July 2018 automotive production increased 16,69% year-on-year to reach 10,88 million units. Premium motorcycle sales in India exceeded 1 million units in the 2018 financial year and that sales of electric 2 wheelers made up 55 000 of these. In terms of Foreign Direct Investment from data released by the Dept. of Industrial Policy and Promotion, India attracted US$ 19,29 billion during the period April 2000 and June 2018.

Masakui described India’s Automotive Mission Plan(AMP) 2026 “as a collective vision of the Government of India and India’s automotive industry” and was a document aimed at multiple stakeholders both “locally and abroad to communicate the government and industry’s intent and objectives pertaining to both vehicle and component manufacturers”. The plan details the 10 year targets for 2026 in terms of size, contribution to India’s development, global footprint, technology, competitiveness, institutional structure and capabilities. “One of its goals is to confirm the Indian automotive industry as a major export hub supported by a comprehensive and stable policy dispensation.” He closed with the statement: “the AMP envisages that the Indian Automotive Industry will grow to between US$250 – 280 billion by 2026, based on an average GDP growth 5,8%

Body repair sector to undergo a paradigm shift to remain relevant Richard Green, national director of the South African Motor Body Repairer’s Association (SAMBRA), believes that the RMI affiliate organisation’s members and their short-term motor insurer business partners in SA face an extremely challenging short-term future. Green adds that the period will “undoubtedly see a paradigm shift,” as he explains that both partners are overtraded and require substantial overhaul to remain relevant and profitable. Borne from Axalta’s ChromaDyne line of colour coats formulated for global automotive manufacturers, Sahara is partly inspired by global trends for warmer shades highlighted in the company’s Global Automotive Colour Popularity Report. Yellow/gold vehicles are most popular in India and China, while the number of brown/beige vehicles increased in North America more than any other region. Sahara is Axalta’s fifth Colour of the Year following Radiant Red (2015), Brilliant Blue (2016), Gallant Gray (2017) and StarLite (2018). ADAS and safety systems driving the future of automobiles Many say that new technology is driving the future of automobiles. More and more vehicles on the roads today utilise Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) such as adaptive cruise control, automatic braking and collision avoidance systems. Although some industry experts project a decline in the rate of growth and revenue for the United States collision repair industry, others say there will be plenty of work available based on the increasing complexity of cars that incorporate ADAS and safety systems. Are you ready to repair adas?

- From the Desk Of Pierre Nicolau, resident Celette France and Managing Director Celette Asia Pacific

The automobile industry is going through a transformative change. Manufacturers are constantly searching for innovative ways of making cars lighter, more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly by way of reduced emissions. The increased use of high and medium-strength steel, aluminium and carbon fibre has allowed manufacturers to improve the structural integrity of vehicles while keeping the overall vehicle weight to a minimum. To make these cars safer, breakthrough technologies such as ADAS (Advanced Driver

Do you really need an oil /water separator? - by Lori Lorenz

Do you have a wash-bay? If so, then it is likely you also have an oil water separator, because your council probably made you install one. Oil water separators are probably the most neglected and least understood pieces of equipment in our industry, and I question how many of us really need them. You need a full understanding of this piece of equipment to debate its need, or lack thereof, with your council. In this article I will explain some of the issues, which could save you in excess of $100,000 for equipment you may not need. Before we go any further, let us familiarise ourselves with the components of a wash-bay. A wash-bay is designed to contain all dirty water; from there it goes into a small pit (about 500 x 500mm) where solids, like sand and dirt, should be collected before the oily water enters the holding tank. Depending on the size of the washbay, this tank should hold between 3000 and 4000 litres of water and it is an integral part of the oil water separation system. From there the oily water is pumped through the oil water separator and oil comes out at one end and clean water at the other. There are several oil water separator systems and the simplest is the triple interceptor. It is an in-ground concrete box, about the size of a bathtub with three chambers that are separated by walls and open on the bottom. The idea is that oily water enters the first chamber where the lighter oil rises to the surface and the clean water passes through the opening of the separation wall to the next chamber. This process is repeated a third time to assure oil-free water. Although this is

PAGE 56

relatively cheap, it is not suitable for our industry and I will explain why later. There is also the vertical gravity separator, an Australian invention, and the coalescing separator, which is the most common. All these systems have advantages and disadvantages – your supplier will advise you as to which is the most suitable for your application. As part of my on-site apprentice training, we look at the workplace’s wash-bay, and I get the apprentice to check how much oil has been collected in the oil drum. We have never found even a drop of oil. I then get them to stick their finger into the oil-outlet pipe and again they never detect any oil whatsoever. One could conclude that they never wash down any oil, but this is not the whole story. It could also be that these workplaces are not using the correct degreaser. If you are not using a quick break degreaser your $100,000-plus investment is a waste of money. You may as well wash your cars in the street and this is where it gets technical, leaving many council inspectors a bit overwhelmed. Oil and water do not mix, we all know that, but with a bit of help from detergent, oil can emulsify. A good example is a very oily frying pan; we add a bit of detergent and water and everything turns in to a milky liquid that we can rinse off. When we use degreaser in an engine bay, we do the same; we emulsify the oil with the help of detergent (degreaser) and hose it off. But now we have a problem, the oil water separator can no longer

separate the oil because it is emulsified, and this is what most people don’t understand. An oil water separator can only work if the oil is lighter than water. This would occur naturally, but an oil water separator will speed up this process and it literally shakes the oil out of the water. However, if the oil is emulsified – linked with the water – this process does not work, and we need to wait until the degreaser breaks down and releases the oil. If we pump the emulsified oily water through the oil water separator, it will go straight to the sewer, not a drop will go into the oil tank and no trace of oil can be detected in the oil outlet pipe. Most professional outlets stock quick break degreaser and it is usually stated on the label. If you are not sure, a simple test can tell whether you are using the right stuff. Fill a glass jar with water, add some oil and some of your degreaser, give it a shake and wait for 10 minutes. If it separates you are in business, and if not, educate your distributor. Quick break degreasers are no more expensive and you will not be able to tell any difference in their performance. Earlier, I mentioned the 3000 to 4000 litre holding tank that is an integral part of the system. Without it, even when using quick break degreaser, the oil cannot be separated. The purpose of the holding tank is for the water to rest, giving it time for the quick break degreaser to break down,

to release the oil and let it float to the surface. The bigger the tank, the longer the water can rest, and a better result can be achieved. The oily water is then scooped from the surface with either a skimmer box or a floating skimmer and pumped through the oil water separator. You may now also understand why the triple interceptor is not suitable when we are using degreaser. It would take hours for the oil to separate and these devices are simply way too small to hold water for such a long time. You may also have realised that the separator and pump pose a negligent cost compared to the wash-bay. In the introduction I hinted that you may not even need a wash-bay with an oil water separator – let me explain why. The issue is simple – if you are using degreaser to wash oily engine bays and oily, greasy parts, you will need it, but how often are you doing this? Every day, once a month, or twice a year? If you are just washing cars to prepare them for your clients you are washing off dirt, road grime and perhaps some dust from the workshop – nothing that would be collected by your oil water separator. Most councils don’t have a problem if you wash these cars in your driveway. Now, if you are washing the odd oily engine once a month, is it worth investing in a wash-bay or would you be better off to take the car to the nearest coin operated wash-bay? I know this costs money, but is it really that expensive?

extra time it takes to go there. What about the mechanic next door? How many times could you degrease over there for a carton of beer and they would love you forever? Another option is to spray the degreaser and use rags to wipe off the oil/grease and dispose of them in the bin. Yes, washing is faster, but also 800 ‘buckaroos’ more expensive. In the past I have placed a large piece of cardboard (bumper bar packaging box) on the floor to catch any dirt and grease; I sprayed the engine bay and used rags to wipe off. I then used a bucket with water and another rag to wipe again wet. Any oily water that dropped on the cardboard was later disposed of in the industrial bin; clean, simple and significantly cheaper. Some crafty operators pour coolant into the washbay. I wonder what they are trying to achieve, perhaps they think it’s good for the environment? The oil water separator can only separate oil from water; everything else goes into the sewer, so you may as well pour coolant down the drain in the first place.

The law is very clear on this issue. We are not allowed to pollute and there are also standards on the water quality we can release into the sewer system. From my observation over several years, many shops – not just collision repairers – use the wrong degreaser. I very much doubt that despite their significant investment in a wash-bay with all the mod cons, they meet these standards. As a matter of fact, they most likely unknowingly pollute just as much as the backyarder who degreases next to the creek. In the end, it does not matter how you achieve it, but if you release your dirty water without oil and grease into the sewer, it would be very difficult for a council to legislate that you need a wash-bay. However, before you start an argument with your local council inspector, you need to make sure that you have procedures in place. All staff need to be aware and understand how and where to wash cars and how the cleaning products are to be used.

Let’s depreciate our $100,000 wash bay over 10 years and use it once a month – the cost is a staggering $800 per wash, not including interest rates. When you are looking at it from this perspective, the coin operated wash-bay sounds like a real bargain, even when considering the
