I just bought the Hyundai Creta last September so, it hasn’t been long that I have owned it. Initially, I wasn’t sure about which car I would take for family use and after looking at all the available options, I found the Hyundai Creta to be the best option for me. The Creta had a certain aesthetic appeal to it which really grabbed my attention and I just went for it. So far, the word that strikes out to me regarding the Hyundai Creta is “comfort”. It’s not too big nor too small so, for me it’s the ideal size for a Compact SUV. I really enjoy the ambience of the Creta and I have to say the car looks amazing, both from the inside and outside. The functioning of the engine and all the other internal components of the Hyundai Creta feels very smooth. I’ve also made it a point to take it for servicing regularly, so, there hasn’t been any problem with the performance. The ground clearance of the Creta is on the higher side so, it isn’t a problem at all, given Kathmandu’s road conditions. So far, the mileage I get is 12-13 kmpl which I believe is pretty amazing taking into consideration the jam-packed traffic. Overall, the performance is smooth and Creta hasn’t given me any problems till date so I am happy with how things are going.

I find the customer service of Hyundai Nepal to be excellent. They make it a point to call their customers timely and are informative about the servicing timings. They are very professional when it comes to marketing and they’ve come a long way from the past. I mean recently they’ve been giving out the Russian world cup lottery tickets to their customers and I also liked how they provide the first 12 services completely free of cost. The Hyundai Creta is something I would definitely recommend to my friends and family. Actually, I would recommend Hyundai Nepal as a whole because of their professional customer service.

OWNER’S REVIEW

It’s been at most, 5 months that I’ve had the Tata Tigor. It was last Dashain when the various schemes for the newly launched compact were out and it took me a while to think about whether to get the Tigor or not. But in the end, I decided to get it booked and then the Tigor was finally delivered to me on October. I’ve had an experience of 12 years with my old car. After all that time, I believed it was time that I should change to a new car. I was still in the process of deciding which car I wanted when I received a call from Tata Nepal where they politely explained about their Tata Tigor which had recently launched. Since I was looking for a new drive and also, I thought the Tigor was priced fairly and thought to myself that it wouldn’t hurt to go take a look at it. When I first saw the Tata Tigor, I definitely found the sedan like structure appealing. The Tigor also suited the variety of requirements I had for my next car. I liked the design of its interior and I found it to be very spacious with the boot space being really big as well.

Suresh Kumar Sukla

Executive Committee member, Federation of Industries in Nepal Industrial Estate (FINIE)

The Tata Tigor’s suspension was ideal and it provided for a smooth ride quality especially when you’re going out of valley. Performance wise I’d have to say the engine is almost flawless. I like how the Tata Tigor reminds me to ride in eco mode from time to time. It tells me the mileage in various situations like in the city or the highway which are all displayed on the dash. I feel the Tata Tigor is a matured car. We always think that Tata is good at making only heavy vehicles but after I drove the Tigor, it changed that perception. When it comes to service, Tata makes an effort to call its customers regularly. They inquire about the documentation of the Tigor and give thorough details on how to go about it. They even have a good network with their customer service team since they’re able to quickly get in touch with their seniors to make a decision. Tata has also conducted events where they did a fuel testing for the Tigor. I’ve been to Delhi on the Tigor and it was from that trip where I came to know that the Tata Tigor was well equipped for long drives. The suspensions, pick-up and ground clearance all provided an excellent ride quality. There’s a village where I go to which requires a 20km drive around a mountain and the Tata Tigor really thrived there. So, I would really have to highlight the suspension and the ground clearance for this instance. So yes, I have done it before and I would definitely recommend the Tata Tigor to whoever asks.

MERCEDES BENZ e63 S AMG Launced in India

TOYOTA EXCHANGE MELA 2018

Mercedes Benz has finally launched the most awaited E-Class Series in India, the Mercedes Benz AMG E 63 S 4Matic. This is a premium car which can achieve 0-100kmph in a matter of 3.4 seconds. Not only does the AMG E 63 S 4Matic+ provide you with style and comfort but also a punch of performance. The AMG E 63 S 4Matic+ gets its power from the AMG 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 engine producing a peak power of 603bhp and a peak torque of 850Nm and that makes it to be one of the most powerful E-Class ever made. This machine can reach to top speeds of 255kmph (electronically limited) and the speed shift dual-clutch transmission makes the fun incredible.

Toyota Nepal recently organized the Toyota Exchange Mela from the 9th of June up until the 10th of June at Naxal Banquet, Kathmandu. The Toyota Exchange Mela offered a brand-new Toyota car before your old car gets devalued. Toyota Exchange Mela was an extravaganza of entertainment and vehicles. The event offered free checkup camp, spare part outlet, on the spot bank finance, accessories outlet, test drive and on the spot valuation.

Talking about the exterior, the car carries the essence of the standard E-Class. Additionally in the front, the bumper is updated with a more aggressive styling. The AMG E 63 S 4Matic+ comes with a slightly larger air intake and a sporty exhaust setup at the rear. The wheel arches are also slightly wider from standard E-Class cars. The matte black AMG 20inch alloy wheels will definitely make you fall in love with the AMD E 63 S 4Matic+. The rear end gets a clearly defined lip spoiler on the boot lid matching the exterior color; it gets the rear apron with diffuser and the quad chrome-plated twin tailpipe with trim elements on the optional sports exhaust system. The car also features a trim strip in silver chrome on the rear apron. Now, let’s talk about what the AMG E 63 S has to offer what most manufacturers don’t, known as the Drift Mode, it is an electromechanically controlled connection that ties the rear axle to the front axle. This is then calculated continuously according to the driving conditions and the driver’s input and that is where the drift mode comes into its own. You can activate the Drift mode in the ‘Race’ drive program using the shift paddles, provided that ESP is deactivated and the transmission is in manual mode. When the drift mode is activated, the AMG E 63 S 4MATIC+ becomes a pure rearwheel drive.

Makes IT’s WAY TO

DISTRIBUTED BY LIFE AUTOMOBILES PVT. LTD.

The Nepalese automotive industry has gone through quite the boom in recent years with a lot of new brands and vehicles entering the market. This year however, the government has decided to increase the taxes by quite a bit which is expected to drastically effect the automotive sector. This however doesn’t seem to intimidate an American Automotive brand in particular. The pioneer of American SUVs “JEEP “ is all set to enter the Nepali market with its very successful product the Jeep Compass. The American manufacturer is very well known internationally for producing very capable off-road machines. It also has one of the fastest SUV currently available in the automotive market the Grand Cherokee Track Hawk. The new Compass has a lot of design

resemblance from its elder sibling, so much that some people refer to it as the smaller Grand Cherokee. The signature seven slot grille has been carried over to the Compass as well. The headlamps are sleek and house a LED daytime running lamps in them. The fog lamp has been incorporated into the bumper and has a dual tone effect. The SUV profile is carried very well with big wheel arches under which the 18inch allow wheels have been fitted. The bold design has been brought over to Jeeps smallest offering, but the smallest offering is not meant to be under looked. It comes with a respectable 1.4L MultiAir petrol engine producing 162 PS and 250Nm of torque and a 2.0 L MultiJet diesel engine producing 173PS and 350Nm of torque. The petrol engine can be had with a six speed manual gearbox or a seven speed DCT facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Automatic Gearbox. While the diesel engine will only be available with the six speed manual, though in the future the nine speed automatic gearbox will be offered too. However the petrol variant will only be offered in a 4x2 setup while the diesel will get the option of both the 4x2 and the 4x4 option. The interior of the Compass looks upmarket with a good amount of room for the driver and the passengers. It offers 480 liters of cargo space and if that is not enough then you fold the rear seats to unlock more cargo space. The capacity goes up to 770 liters with the seats down which is very handy. The Compass has a lot to prove since it will be competing against vehicles that have been around for some time and have gained a loyal customer base. The main competition will come from vehicles like the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, MG GS, Toyota Rav4, Nissan Xtrail, Honda CR-V, XUV500, etc. with such tough competition it has a lot to prove. The compass will be available in three trims, Sport, Longitude and Limited.

hile the inverters sit in a dusty corner of our well-lit houses, the name of Mr. Kul Man Ghising, has become more popular than rock stars and movie icons in recent months. As of May 14th, the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) proudly announced that the country is load-shedding free. Yet we find ourselves and others negligent towards the proper upkeep of our vehicle lights that ensure the safety of ourselves and others on the road. In the ‘90s, police check-points were few and far within the capital. On the rare occasion you would come across one, the ‘Police Uncle’ would ask for your vehicle papers and driver’s license and ensure that all your lights on the exterior of the vehicle were operational. Fast forward a few decades and the prime motive of a checkpoint has changed. Ma-Pa-Se checks are rampant, and rightfully so; but rarely do the authorities or vehicle owners show concern over busted tail-lights, missing side-lights, or headlights that are not turned on at all after dark.

Improper lighting on your vehicle can cause the following roadway dangers: DECREASING YOUR OWN VISIBILITY When you use your high-beams in poor weather such as fog or rain, the light can actually reflect off of water particles, making it harder to see oncoming traffic, animals, and pedestrians. In addition, burnt bulbs or broken brake lights make it extremely difficult for others to spot you. MISJUDGING DISTANCE Brake lights and corner markers are designed to help outline the structure of the vehicle. Without these, others on the road cannot quickly and precisely identify and outline the vehicle in order to avoid a collision, especially on improperly lit streets. Headlights, on the other hand, are designed to illuminate the immediate surrounding with the use of low beams, while the high beams are reserved to help scan farther than normal lights. However, if you forget that your high beams are on or use them all the time, they can cause you to misjudge the distance in front of your vehicle. Not only can this cause delayed braking accidents, but it can also cause collisions by blinding the drivers in opposing lanes. BLINDING ONCOMING TRAFFIC In pitch dark, the use of high beams are mostly unavoidable. However, if you fail to turn your high beams off when vehicles approach you, facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

the light can temporarily blind the drivers and cause them to swerve into traffic. This may include swerving into your vehicle! INCREASING ROAD RAGE On our chaotic and crowded streets, we witness road rage on almost every commute. Having your brights on while driving behind someone is not only rude, but it can also blind and distract other drivers, infuriating them to the point where they may take dangerous and deliberate actions to retaliate. Stopping or turning without indicating can also instigate other drivers and lead to unwanted confrontation. The above dangers can easily be averted if all road users would address a few key safety features that come outfitted in our vehicles from factory. LET’S BEGIN WITH OUR HEADLIGHTS While a well-lit street would be ideal, the NEA and KMC have been struggling to keep up with the massive road expansion projects that are in dire need of lighting. Amidst dark alleys and even the poorly lit stretches of Ring Road, we find ourselves squinting at the blinding and crookedly set-up lights of oncoming vehicles. Add rain into the equation and we suddenly have a dangerous cocktail of slippery roads and bright beams reflecting off the wet sheen of the tarmac. While we blame others, our own vehicles might not have proper headlight adjustment. A quick stop at your local mechanic or dealer, and a request with the technicians to properly aim your lights should fix this issue. INDICATORS While our local transport still figures out what directional side lights to turn on while stopping and turning on to the road, there is still a majority of us that forget to use them while changing lanes or making turns. It all boils down to the chaos that is going on around us with vehicles passing on the left and distractions such as that cow that won’t move out of your lane. Yet, a simple click of the blinkers could let those around you know which way you intend to turn. BRAKE LIGHTS Having spent a little over a decade of my life away from Nepal in the United States of America, I have first-hand experience on how a dim or burnt-out brake light is more than enough to get you in trouble with the law. A warning or a fine are your options when it comes to improper vehicle light maintenance. To come from such strict regulation to the dim lit streets of Kathmandu was more intense than the culture shock. A broken or disconnected brake light is one of the biggest reasons for rear end collisions. Without a functional brake light, we have no means of communicating with the vehicles behind us. PARKING LIGHTS In a city where there are no parking spots, parking lights seem redundant. Yet, we find high-end SUV’s pulled over to the side of the road while picking up some vegetables from street-side-vendors, or running into the ATM for some cash. The parking lights and corner-makers play a vital role in letting others know that there is an obstacle ahead in the crowded streets that we share. Make sure they are operational and turned on when you stop in your lane or pull over on the roadway.

OFF-ROAD LIGHTS There seems to be very limited knowledge and regulations on street approved lights. Most aftermarket LED or HID off-road lights are improperly aimed and pose a high risk to all others on the road. Keep them on for only the darkest situations and be courteous to other vehicles when you see them coming towards you. The best option is to slow down and turn them off when you are in the city! Keep them strictly for off-road use only; as stated on most reputable light housings. As social beings, communication is key to daily survival. We have spent decades polishing the sign language for the deaf and mute, and if we can figure that out, we can surely take some time out of our busy lifestyle to check a few filaments that enable us to communicate our intentions with those around us. A quick monthly check with you in the driver seat, and a family member or a friend walking around the vehicle ensuring all lights are properly functioning can not only save you a lot of hassle on the road but could possibly save your life. Please pass these tips to your friends and family, and especially new drivers. Do it for the safe of your own safety.

Fast Track

The Evolution of Automotive Technology COMPILED BY: PRASHANT MANANDHAR

W

e often tend to believe that we are living in an age of technology, an era with fast changes taking over the world with technological advancements and innovations. If we look back at history, we can see how all of these advancements have taken place merely in the past hundred years. However, everything has been fast tracking as of recently with every new invention and the future does indeed seem like a technological odyssey coming into reality. We can go on and on about how technology has been growing and the world is being shaped with it, but here we delve into how vehicular technologies has evolved through out the years.

Cars have changed a great deal through out the years, and the technological advancements of vehicles in the past hundred years is just something to take into consideration, from basic mechanics to high-end technological marvels. Cars can mean a lot of different things to different people from horseless carriages to hot rods. At times, these automobiles can even be considered as a platform for technology. Thus, here we have put together a timeline of the most important advancements in vehicular technology.

MODEL T

1908

1911

The first mass produced car was released by Ford to the public. Model T was the world’s first car produced by an assembly line which made the car much cheaper and therefore widely affordable. The massproduced commercial auto becomes the technological starting point for new ideas with which future developers could work.

ELECTRIC IGNITION STARTERS

Starting your car gets much easier and safer. Previously, a crank system was used to start the motor which were considered to be dangerous because the engine could jump as the car started, occasionally injuring the driver. The first electric starter was used on a Cadillac in 1912 and they were soon widely adopted. developers could work.

FOUR WHEEL BRAKE

1929

28

It wasn’t until the 1920s that the cars got a brake on each of the four wheels. By the end of the decade, almost all the cars came with four-wheel brakes to make stopping much safer and easier. It was also a humble precursor to ABS system with superior stopping power.

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2018

1969

3-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Automatic transmission was already something that was under development before and had already seen a lot of iterations. However, it wasn’t until the late 60s that this technology was widely seen as a feature on most of the popular makes and models.

POWER STEERING

1956

1934

Power steering becomes a common feature in the post-War autos of the ‘50s. Power steering first appeared on a Chrysler Imperial and then in a Cadillac a year later. Power steering uses hydraulics to amplify the pressure on the tires as you turn the steering wheel, making it easier to steer the vehicle.

COIL SPRING SUSPENSION

Independent coil spring suspension comes into existence in 1934 — first in the front, later for the back wheels, too. The metal coil spring compressed itself to absorb the shock you feel when driving over bumps in the road, improving the handling of the car.

ABS TECHNOLOGY

1971

Anti-Lock Braking System, is a clever technology that stops the wheels from locking up during sharp braking, preventing skidding. It was originally used on trains and Concorde aircraft, before being adapted for a Chrysler Imperial.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER

1973

1982

The first catalytic converter was produced making emissions more cleaner and easier to get around. It is designed to clean up the polluting exhaust fumes by reducing toxic emissions created by the engine.

ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION

Throughout the history of automobiles, there hasn’t been a standard way of mixing air and fuel to get the most out of an engine. However, electronic fuel injections are regarded as the most widely used technology now. It wasn’t until the early 80s that sensor and microprocessors were used to mix fuel and air making the process much more efficient and precise.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AIR BAGS

1984

After years and years of development and testing, air bags are finally safe enough to be a standard safety feature in a car. By 1984, manufacturers had figured out cost-effective and safe ways to deploy airbags.

DRIVER ASSIST FEATURES

2010s

Carmakers now have features that help and assist the driver while driving the car as well with dozens of automated technological features such as lane departure warnings, blind spot warnings, cross traffic alerts, etc.

TESLA AUTOPILOT

2014

Elon Musk was the first to offer autopilot technology on the Model S. The Tesla Autopilot is the first commercially available driver assistance that can steer the car and even change lanes on the motorway.

2020

SELF-DRIVING CARS

AUTOMATIC PARKING ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS

1994

In 1994, the 16-pin connector became essential for all carmakers as it also gave mechanics access to key information about the car for repairs. This is how on-board diagnostics have come around to be mandatory on cars.

2003

REVERSING CAMERA

The now widely used navigation system, GPS was introduced in 2000. However, the first electronic navigation system was already developed half a decade before in 1995.

This technology has helped in avoiding many of the reversing mishaps that can happen. With the help of little cameras fitted at the rear of the car, now you can stream live footage of the area behind the car as you reverse the vehicle. This technology was first used in a Nissan Primera.

THE SMART KEY

HYBRID ENGINES

2002

NAVIGATION SYSTEMS

1995

1998

In 2003, Toyota was the first to introduce its intelligent parking assist which helped drivers while parking their cars and assisted in parallel parking as well.

In 1998, Mercedes-Benz was the first to offer the smart key. Some of the first versions were credit cardsized slivers of plastic, but those evolved into the fobs we have today. Over the past couple decades, smart key fobs have made getting in and starting your car nearly effortless.

2000

Engines using both electric power and fuel has been developed for the first time. Hybrid electric vehicles get their first mass-production shot at the turn of the century. Changing the fuel that cars used in the first place could be one of the most profound potential steps in automotive evolution.

“

Autonomous vehicles are the future and are the next step in automotive technology. Google has set 2020 as the release date for its self-driving cars and this is the next big thing that all car manufacturers are willing to get their hands on.

Seeing the way that automotive technology has developed over the years, we can definitely be positive that the future has a lot in store for us. We only expect to see new additions in the cars that we get our hands on in the future.

Technological advancements of vehicles in the past hundred years is just something to take into consideration, from basic mechanics to high-end technological marvels.

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2018

W

ith most of the newer car launches being either a hatchback, a crossover or an SUV, we can see a clear difference in the choice of the current market. The hatchback and the SUV categories have been heated up for quite some time now and the crosshatch segment, is not looking to be left behind by any means. With a lot of cars already competing in that category with the likes of the Hyundai i20 Active, Polo Cross, Fiat Avventura, Toyota Etios Cross, etc. Ford wanted a share in this market too! But rather than placing the Ford Freestyle in the Crosshatch Segment it opted to create a segment of its own called the CUV (Compact Utility Vehicle). Although it’s basically the same thing as a crossover hatch, it has just been given a different name and will be competing with the same lot of cars!

EXTERIOR

The Ford Freestyle is similar looking to the other crossover with a slightly raised ride height and body cladding to give it the rough look of an SUV. The styling elements on the Freestyle is a little different than the current generation Figo (the car it is based on) because it features a new updated design which will soon be introduced on the Figo as a facelift. The headlights looks smart with the honeycomb grille between the two and the fog lamps are enclosed in a “C” shaped plastic piece. The front and rear end gets a silver skid plate like design while the sides have a black plastic cladding on the wheel arches. The Freestyle has enough space for a 16 inch rim but does away with a 15 inch wheel to keep the ride quality in check. It seems Ford has a thing for the color Grey so the Rims and the ORVMs (Outside Rear View Mirrors) are all finished in grey. While these are the major changes on the exterior, you can make your freestyle a little more unique with Ford’s accessories which includes a body stripe kit in which a racing stripe runs down the middle of the car from the front end to the back. The other option is the Roof Wrap, where the roof is wrapped in a contrasting black shade. If these accessories are not enough then you can get the optional Spoiler as well which will give your car an even sportier look. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2018 31

INTERIOR

The interior is the main distinguishable part between the Figo and the Freestyle. While the Figo had a nice interior, the Freestyle is a step above it. The coffee brown finish on the dash looks nice and the Freestyle gets a 6.5 inch Sync 3 touch screen infotainment system which the Figo clearly lacked. The Freestyle has a very minimalistic touch when we look at the dash because there aren’t a lot of buttons to get you confused. The layout is simple and is easy to get used too. The Sync 3 infotainment system was very intuitive to use and is amongst one of the best if not the best infotainment system in the class. The seats looked nice and were very comfortable, providing good support. The room in the back was pretty good too, with ample amount of leg room and head room. The climate control was easy to use but it wasn’t a dual zone climate control. If we had to nitpick then it has to be the awkward placement of the push start button and the voice control which gets really annoying at times. The push start button is placed on the left side behind the steering wheel and at times it is difficult to locate. There is a female voice that comes on at times when you are using the infotainment system, it is ok for a while but gets really annoying after it continuously comes on when trying to use the infotainment system. The speakers were really nice though and had a good amount of bass in them. Just like the exterior accessories you can get seat covers for the Freestyle but it is not applicable in the models with side and curtain airbags.

PERFORMANCE

The trend of inline 3 cylinders is on the rise and the engine fitted in the petrol variant is a 3 cylinder too. The 1.2L 3 cylinder engine from the Dragon series produces a surprising 96 PS of power @ 6500 RPM and 120 Nm of Torque @ 4250 RPM. The 1.5L 4 cylinder diesel engine produces 100 PS of power @ 3750 RPM and 215 Nm of torque @ 3000 RPM. The model we tested was the 1.2L petrol variant. The engine was very punchy and responsive. It likes to rev high into the rev band which is unlike other 3 cylinder engines. Though like the other 3 cylinder engines, it gets a bit loud when you rev it. The motor felt pretty strong and had a very fast response time, which made driving that much more fun. The steering wheel had a nice feel to it and was very easy to maneuver. The car has a higher ground clearance but it handled pretty well. The suspension did their duties well and proved to be capable on difficult terrains too.

SAFETY

Safety has been given a lot of priority in the new Freestyle and a lot of safety tech has been included, of which some are first in class. The first and the foremost important safety feature are the Airbags, the top end Titanium Plus variant comes loaded with six airbags. While the rest of the variants have two airbags. ABS (Antilock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution) comes standard too, which really helps in the braking department. The car features Active Rollover Prevention (ARP) which makes sure that you don’t rollover your car, which is a segment first. As other manufacturers are yet to bring this technology to the crossover class. It also has reversing cameras and parking sensor to make parking easier and a lot safer.

VERDICT

The Ford Freestyle is a very good car and is one of the best offerings in its category. It does have some limitations and has places where improvements are necessary. Like they say no one is perfect, similarly no car is perfect too, but Ford have done a pretty good job with their new vehicle and have brought it as close to perfection as they could. They have taken huge steps forward in the right direction and we only hope that it keeps on getting better and better. The Freestyle starts from Nrs. 26,99,000/- to Nrs. 34,49,000/- for the petrol variant while the diesel starts from Nrs. 29,99,000/- to Nrs. 35,99,000/- for the Titanium plus variant. The Freestyle makes a very strong case for itself and ifww you are looking for a hatchback or a crossover than you should definitely give the Freestyle a shot.

SAVE DRIVE MONEY! BETTER! One of the most important decisive factor while purchasing a daily commuter, apart from the budget and the resale value, is definitely the mileage it gets. The manufacturers also know that mileage is an important factor for the consumers and they display it prominently in their marketing campaigns. But with experience comes knowledge, or so they say, and we know from experience that the advertised mileage is just as real as a unicorn in a fairy-tale. There are two metrics that are considered in the measurement of a vehicle’s mileage: fuel efficiency and fuel economy. In layman terms, fuel efficiency (as the name suggests) measures how efficiently fuel is being burned in the engine and is measured in litres per 100 kilometres or L/100km. Fuel economy is the distance a vehicle can cover with one litre of fuel and is measured in kilometres per litre or km/L. We as consumers, are most familiar with the term fuel economy (km/L) generally mentioned as fuel mileage. Although, as commuters, we should focus more on the fuel efficiency or the fuel consumption side of things. A vehicle with good fuel economy might not be so different on the fuel consumption side of things. Let’s consider a run-of-the-mill Indian commuter motorcycle for example; one model is advertised as having 82km/L and the other having 70km/L. Considering fuel economy, the first motorcycle seems like the better alternative, and that is what we have been trained to look at when buying vehicles. But if we consider fuel efficiency or consumption, which we should, there isn’t much difference in either of them; 1.22L/100km for the first one and 1.43L/100km for the second one. Even though there is a difference in the fuel economy, it isn’t a significant difference in terms of fuel consumption when we consider the amount of fuel used from both motorcycles for a 100km ride. Now, let’s consider something from two different categories, like a person wanting to upgrade from a 150cc sports motorcycle to a 400cc masculine street machine, the advertised fuel mileage for the sporty motorcycle is 42km/L and the masculine machine is 26.5km/L. Now if we look into the fuel consumption of both of these vehicles, the sporty motorcycle consumes 2.38L/100km whereas the masculine machine consumes 3.77L/100km. That is a difference of 1.39L/100km!

44

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2018

With the increasing prices of fuel, it is becoming ever more important to consider not only the fuel economy, but also the fuel consumption on our daily commuter. Most of the time it is not possible to change our vehicles for a more efficient one, but there are some ways that I will share with you so that you can get the best out of the vehicle that you have. Many of us think that a vehicle is a maintenance free device that just requires petrol from time to time and an oil change every now and then. But what we fail to realize is the impact of preventive maintenance on a vehicle. By following a strict preventive maintenance schedule, not only do we prolong the life of a vehicle and save money on expensive repairs, we can also reduce the fuel consumption by as much as 30%. This results in major fuel and money savings in the long run. Something that has been repeatedly mentioned about tyres, and it can’t be stressed more, maintain your tyre pressure. Under-inflated tyres increase the rolling resistance of a vehicle, resulting in increased fuel consumption. While stuck in traffic jams or the usual infinity-long traffic stops at major intersections, don’t let your vehicle idle for more than a minute. Idling engines consume about 2 to 3 litres of fuel per hour (on 4 wheelers) and emit more pollution than while driving. With no signs of Kathmandu becoming dust-free in the near future, regular air filter replacements just might not be enough anymore. The easier the air gets into the engine, the more efficient the engine gets, which leads to lower fuel consumption. Have your spark plugs checked and gapped to the manufacturer’s specification; a complete combustion cycle increases efficiency. And if needed replace all spark plugs in unison. An oxygen (O2) sensor plays a vital role in the fuel consumption parameter, a dirty or faulty O2 sensor will not be able to accurately measure the required fuel to be injected into the engine. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

An aggressive driving style with heavy acceleration and hard braking is a very inefficient way to drive. Some newer vehicles have an instant mileage display, use that display to learn an efficient driving style trying to achieve as high a number as possible. A good driving style can increase fuel efficiency by as much as 30%. If you are on the highway, try to maintain a steady speed with minimal braking and overtaking as possible; a cruise control system would be ideal but given Nepal’s surprises on the roads, do use with caution. Drive in the highest gear possible without causing the engine and gearbox to strain, the higher the gear, the better the fuel consumption. Remove unnecessary weight from your vehicle (aka junk in the trunk). Do you really need to haul around 10 pairs of shoes just to go to work? Or do you really need a 5kg subwoofer in your car?

Plan your route before-hand, try to use secondary roads that are less prone to traffic jams and try to avoid roads that are not black-topped (which probably means every road in Kathmandu). Consolidate errands into one long trip rather than frequent short trips, to ensure that travel is done when engine is in optimum operating temperatures. On motorcycles, make sure your foot isn’t pressing the rear brake or your hand pulling on the clutch lever unknowingly; this will reduce efficiency and increase wear and tear. During regular check-ups of your vehicle, check that your wheels are turning freely; for that, have your wheel bearings, wheels, rotors, axles and brake pads all within specification. If your driving is limited to just on road, choose a fuelefficient tyre to drastically improve the fuel consumption of your vehicle. I know, I know having a bulky off-road tyre on your SUV looks cool, but what about the environment? Have your AC system inspected, cleaned and filled with the specified amount of refrigerant; an improperly functioning AC system can draw a lot of power from the engine which causes increased fuel consumption. So, with these 16 tips to help you save fuel, money and the environment, I hope to have helped you understand that driving is not just about getting from point A to point B. It is about getting from A to B using the least amount of fuel possible. I wish to hear back from you to know if these tips worked for you; or if you have a trick of your own that you would like to share, please feel free to send it in to our facebook page. Until next time, adios.

orrect us if we’re wrong, but one of the most loved hatchbacks in the market has to be the Suzuki Swift. Its hot hatch inspired styling gives it a very sporty yet elegant look. It has always been known for its endless modification options and there are some very uniquely modified Swifts driving around the city. The Swift has managed to win our hearts ever since the day we first saw it. It did get an update mid-way through its life but it was mostly just facelifts with some additional feature to keep up with the rapid advancements of automotive technology. But this time around, it went through a major overhaul and now we love it even more. We took the Swift ZXI out for a spin to find out if this much awaited and anticipated car lives up to the hype. We’ll take you through the changes and the improvements that have been made over the previous Swift. So, let’s not keep you waiting any longer and get on with the review, shall we?

EXTERIOR

Like we said earlier, we have been in love with the Swift’s design ever since we first saw it. But the newer Swift leveled up a few notches on the hotness scale with its new and improved styling. The headlights are shared with the Suzuki Dzire and it still looks very striking in the Swift.

The LED headlight with the LED DRLs (Day time Running Lamps) is available only in the ZXI (O). The front grille has been reworked which gives it a bolder look. The hot hatch design element has been carried over and you can tell that Suzuki has taken design very seriously this time around. The rear door handles have been moved from its usual place to the black area near the window which gives it a 3-door hot hatch like look and feel. Unless you look at it carefully, without acknowledging this creative design, you will most probably mistake it for a 3-door car at the first glance. Either that or the person will be standing confused, searching for the door handle. Trust us, we’re not exaggerating, the door handles just blend in that well. The side profile of the car is sleek with gentle curves along the lines. The 15 inch alloys look very elegant and compliment the look of the car very well. Moving on to the rear, the taillight

has been completely re-done. It is an LED unit enclosed within a boxy outer shape. The already attractive rear section of the previous gen Swift looks more attractive with the new upgrade.

INTERIOR

The interior has been kept as minimalistic as possible. There aren’t many things that will divert your attention away from the road ahead. The media player takes up most of the dash board space. It’s got two A/C vents situated just above the media player and the A/C control dials just below the display. However, it misses out on the 7 inch touchscreen infotainment system which is available in the ZXI (O) variant. The flat bottomed steering wheel adds to the sportiness of the vehicle. It carries over the steering mounted audio controls for added convenience. The top end model, the ZXI features passive keyless entry and push button start/stop function which sounds really cool. You can just leave your car keys in your pocket and drive off without having to bother reaching for it. The seats were well bolstered

and provided good support to both the driver and the passenger. Also in comparison to the previous gen Swifts, the rear space has seen improvements, since, it offers more leg room and head room.

PERFORMANCE

The Swift definitely drives like how it looks. The tried and tested 1.2L VTVT petrol engine produces 81.8 Hp @ 6000 RPM and 113 Nm of torque @ 4200 RPM. The power figures are not close to any hot hatches but the 855 KG kerb weight of the car makes it feel really peppy. Thanks to that, the Swift has a good power to weight ratio. The torque comes in at the higher side of the rev band, which shows how much this engine loves to be revved and pushed to its limits. When you do that, that’s when you will see its true character. The flat bottom gives it a very sporty feel while driving and combined with the sharp handling ability of the car gave us more confidence to push it harder. However, we can’t say the same about the suspension because it is a little on the softer side. The softer suspension ensures a more comfortable ride, but that slightly sacrifices the confidence while driving. It entirely depends upon how you use the car, if you are going to use it like an everyday commuter then it will do the job. Your commutes will go very smooth with the sharp handling, peppy yet fuel efficient engine and soft suspension comfortable. But if you are one to push cars to their limits then you might notice that the soft suspension won’t be the best choice. The Swift comes equipped with two disc brakes upfront and a drum unit at the rear, the brakes have a nice bite to them and stopping is not an issue. The addition of ABS (Antilock Braking System) and EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution) make stopping much safer and easier.

THE SWIFT TICKS MOST OF THE BOXES RIGHT AND IS POSITIONED IN SUCH A SPOT THAT THE PEOPLE OF ALL AGES WILL BE ATTRACTED TO IT

VERDICT

The new Swift has set its priority right! That is to take the top spot in its segment and increase the fan base of the vehicle. The very sporty looking hatch is a very good choice for those looking into buying a mid-sized hatch. The only gripe that we have with this vehicle is the fact that the top end ZXI (O) variant is currently unavailable. The addition of LED headlights with LED DRLs, a 7 inch touchscreen infotainment system and more attractive allow wheels, would make the swift even more desirable. Current the Swift is only available in the VXI and the ZXI variant priced at NRS. 28,99,000/- and 31,99,000/respectively. The swift ticks most of the boxes right and is positioned in such a spot that the people of all ages will be attracted to it. It is a very sporty looking vehicle but it is not so angular and sharply designed like most of the sporty hatches, so it is sporty with a dash of elegance to it.

Mr. Sulochan Rajbhandari is an avid mountain biker, who loves exploring the varying geography of Nepal. Mr. Rajbhandari is the Managing Director at Gravity De Consult which deals with international liaisoning. Mr. Rajbhandari prefers to pedal his way around different places in the morning as a way of recreation and keeping his body healthy. So we talk with him about his love for mountain bikes and automobiles.

CAN YOU GIVE A SHORT INTRODUCTION ABOUT YOURSELF, HOBBIES AND YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE?

I am a 51 year old businessman and an avid mountain biker. My life pretty much revolves around mountain bikes. The first thing I do in the morning after I get up is go for a quick ride which helps me keep my body in shape and it also helps me clear my mind.

HOW MUCH OF AN AUTO ENTHUSIAST ARE YOU?

By now you must have got the message that I am more of a mountain bike fanatic than an auto enthusiast. I have been into mountain bikes for a long time. But I have been driving for quite a long time too.

DO YOU PREFER DRIVING BY YOURSELF OR DO YOU HAVE A DRIVER?

Most of the time I drive by myself because it pleases me to handle my machine by myself. Only time I let someone drive is when I have a handful of work and multitask getting from a place to another. Because it is a wise decision to not drive when your mind is diverted. Also when you have a busy schedule finding a parking space is a big hassle, so getting rid of that problem by having a driver is a big time saver.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF OWNING A PREMIUM SET OF WHEELS?

There are tons of fun when you ride a premium mountain bike. The bike itself is pretty light, which makes every ride enjoyable on any terrain. Plus, you get that extra speed to maneuver in any kind of situations which no other normal bike offers you. The geometry of the frames and the suspension give you better traction and control in rugged terrain or when descending downhill. All of this cannot be expected from a cheaper mountain bike so there are more pros to owing a premium set of wheels. The only downside in owning a premium mountain bike is its maintaining expenses.

TILL DATE, ON WHICH CAR/BIKE/ CYCLE HAVE YOU HAD THE BEST EXPERIENCE DRIVING/RIDING?

I’ve been to many places on my mountain bike but one of the most memorable experience till date has to be at lower Manaslu Circuit. This amazing mountain biking experience is something that is hard to put into words or capture in pictures. You have to be there and feel it.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE, WHICH CAR WOULD YOU WANT TO OWN AS A DREAM CAR & DREAM CYCLE?

I think my dream car will remain only as a dream until there is a high way which deserves such kind of machine. I will wait for that day when the government comes up with good infrastructures. Until then, I choose not to dream of my dream car. As for a cycle, I have always looked up to owning a Scott Contessa Spark 700. Since, I already own a specialized Stumpjumper, Contessa is something more than just another sets of wheels.

WHAT IS ONE OF THE CRAZIEST THINGS THAT YOU HAVE DONE BEHIND A STEERING WHEEL?

There are some sensible days and some crazy days. Some of the best moments in life are the ones you cannot tell anyone about.

WHERE DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST DESTINATION TO DRIVE/RIDE IN NEPAL?

is a combination of all kinds of terrain. Recently, the government paved asphalt which is pretty smooth to ride on your vehicles. Since the entire region is a dry land and has so much off road to offer. It is one of the best place to enjoy your mountain bike or off road vehicles.

IF YOU WERE GIVEN COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE COUNTRY, WHAT CHANGES WOULD YOU BRING ABOUT IN THE AUTOMOTIVE SCENE?

If I had complete control of the country, first thing what I would do is make cycle lanes in as many places as I could. I consider myself an environmentalist when it comes to automobiles. By introducing cycle lanes, not only would people be encouraged towards bicycles but I believe that the pollution and the over population of vehicles will decrease gradually. It would also make cycling a lot safer as other vehicles would have their own lane and the cyclists will have their own.

I personally would recommend Mustang for the best driving experience. This place AUTOLIFE JUNE 2018 55

he wait is finally over as the Apache RR310 is all set to launch in Nepal. After its first appearance at EICMA 2016 as the concept Akula 310, TVS has conceived the race bred Apache RR310 and launched it in India in 2017. The Apache RR310 receives much of the Racing DNA of the Apache family in top spec racing components while staying commuter friendly.

same time allowing the rider to make smooth racing maneuvers. The bike has a tight wheelbase of 1365mm which adds to its maneuverability. More to add on, the RR310’s agility is its engine position within the structurally efficient trellis frame. TVS decided on a reversed inclined DOHC engine. This setup makes for a compact and low center of gravity, which inspires swift turning capabilities.

The riders’ triangle has been designed to give the rider a more balanced weight distribution which translates to less strain to the back and the wrist, and at the

Now coming down to the powerhouse of the bike, the 312.2cc engine generates a maximum power of 34PS at 9700rpm and maximum torque of 27.3Nm at

7700rpm. The Apache RR310 comes with a 6 speed gear box tuned to respond with racing precision. It gets a KYB suspension that ensures optimum dampening. The braking department is handled by a 300mm petal type rotor in the front and a 240mm in the rear (same type). In addition, it comes with dual channel ABS as standard which is a plus point in terms of safety. Something that we can look forward to in this bike is the patented heat dissipation feature which is claimed to effectively nullify heating issues which we commonly experience from motorcycles of this segment. Much of it can be contributed to the gill vents, the well-engineered coolant system in the engine and the ram vents. The Apache RR310 has been engineered to be highly aerodynamic and much of that is thanks to the extensive amount of time TVS claims to have tested it in a wind tunnel. This is something we can’t wait to test out. The Apache RR310 was originally called the Akula 310 which translates to “shark” in Russian and the styling cues are definitely inspired by the marine predator. The headlight assembly reminds you of a sharks head, the vents resemble the gills, the tail assembly has a signature look that will let anyone behind you know what you’re on. We’d have to say that the RR310 is definitely going to be an exciting addition to 300cc motorcycle segment and we can’t wait to see how this fine craft fares on our roads. Stay tuned for more coverage on this apex predator.

AUTOLIFE FEATURE

A RIDER’S GUIDE TO

BIDING THE MONSOON WORDS: SHAQUILLE S. GHOTANE

Nothing is better than the sound of heavy rain when you are falling asleep. Too bad the same can’t be said when you’re heading out to begin your day, especially if you commute on a two wheeler. Everyone dreads arriving at work soaked all the way to your undergarments. Unfortunately, getting wet isn’t the only problem that the monsoon brings. These wet conditions spawn plenty of road hazards. So it is a good idea that we know what to expect in these kinds of situation. Let’s talk about different scenarios that can happen in wet conditions. You might actually be aware of some of the points but you could always use this as a check list or a safety refresher.

RIDER’S SAFETY

away with a bruised hip and a nasty hole in my favorite jacket.

TRACTION

There are a few things you can do to keep yourself from sliding like avoiding wet patches; stay on dry lines left by the cars and bikes in front of you.

Well, wet surfaces would obviously mean the roads will get a little more slippery so, it would be wise to exercise caution. Let me tell you a true story; one fine Monday morning, the rain had just subsided and I was on my way to college. Luckily, the traffic wasn’t dense so, I was able to commute leisurely. Then I reached that part where I needed to climb an uphill road between Ratopul and Gaushala. I pulled in on the throttle a bit so I wouldn’t lose speed going against gravity then suddenly a dog runs across just a few meters ahead. I hit the brakes as soon as I saw it and even though I made sure I pulled in the brakes in a progressive manner, I must have used too much of it because the next thing I remember was my head hitting the ground followed by the rest of my body. Luckily, there weren’t any vehicles behind me. So, you have got to stay alert in wet conditions. And if you were concerned about my injuries, I got

60

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2018

KEEP THE DISTANCE

The brakes aren’t as effective in wet conditions since they can’t grip the rotors as well. So you’ll probably want to compensate by keeping more space than you usually do with vehicles in front of you so you’ll have plenty of time to react to changes in the situation.

VISIBILITY The onslaught of heavy rains orchestrates poor traffic conditions. The rain tends to make it difficult to see ahead in traffic and the visor collecting water droplets make it worse. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

With everyone’s vision compromised, the roads become hazardous. So, here are some ways to help you get through this sticky situation.

WEAR BRIGHT CLOTHES

The best form of safety gear is possibly one that prevents the accident in the first place. No normal person goes out with the intention to hit you but sometimes it happens because they couldn’t see you. Wearing bright contrasting clothes lets people see you from afar, so it significantly reduces the chances of you getting hit. Reflective strips, fluorescent colors or basically anything that grabs attention will help.

HEAD LIGHTS

Turning on your headlights will also increase visibility. Usually, it’s a general practice abroad for two wheelers to have their headlights on all the time for this very reason. Recently, it’s also coming into practice in our country after the introduction of the BS4 standard. Although it may seem like a disadvantage since leaving the headlights on will drain the battery but the batteries aren’t supposed to die so easily and the advantages of having them on actually makes it a better idea to keep them on.

have some level of grip when you need to put your foot down. They are designed to be worn over your shoes. But if you’re not interested in that then there’s always the option of putting plastic bags over your shoes, if you are up to it that is.

RAIN GEAR

I don’t need to tell you that rain coats/covers are your best chances in keeping you from becoming a human wet towel. They will protect you from getting completely soaked while you commute. Personally, I’d prefer to go with an individual rain coat since I don’t want to be attached to my bike in the event of a slide. If you find yourself buying one then try a size or two above your usual size so you’ll have room to put them on over your normal daily wear and maybe along with a backpack.

PLASTIC BAGS AND ZIP LOCK BAGS

Carrying plastic bags or Zip lock bags will come in handy when you find yourself facing a downpour. You can use plastic bags as a shoe saver or you can put your laptops or notebooks in them before putting them in your backpack so you add a dry layer. You can also put your phone or license and bluebook inside a Zip lock bag.

SAVING YOUR STUFF WATCH OUT FOR MUD

Generally in Nepal, rain leads to mud. If you’re commuting on a rainy day, your bike/ scooter tends to collect cakes of mud. So give your trusty steed a wash. Get all that mud off while it’s still wet. One good reason you’ll want to do this is mud can potentially damage the surfaces it sticks to.

SHOE SAVER

Riding motorcycles obviously means you’re exposed to various elements. Then add rain to that and it spells disaster. Now, your shoes are probably the most exposed part of body when you’re on a bike, so you’re more likely to get soggy shoes having gone through the rain. Luckily, there are products that you can find in our country that are designed to keep your shoes from getting soggy. What I’m talking about are Shoe savers. They are like rain coats for shoes. They are made from similar materials of the rain coat and have a sole attached to it so you

UNFORTUNATELY, GETTING WET ISN’T THE ONLY PROBLEM THAT THE MONSOON BRINGS. THESE WET CONDITIONS SPAWN PLENTY OF ROAD HAZARDS

HONDA GRAZIA

THE

GRACEFUL COMMUTER WORDS & PHOTOS: AL TEAM

I

n a day and age, when people are always looking for comfort and convenience, sometimes commuting through the busy streets of Kathmandu valley can be a hassle. It seems like almost everyone is in a rush to reach somewhere on time and are looking for something that can help them get by through all of this. This daily commute for some are public transportations which are always crowded and cramped up, and many just want to have a private vehicle of their own to escape from these aggravations. But then again there lies a big question, what do we look for to get by on our daily commute? Most of the times, the option that people choose out of convenience is a two-wheeler. Sometimes motorcycles can be too much for

people looking for the ease of use and comfort and this is where scooters shine through. Scooters are one of the easiest tool for daily commutes and this can be made pretty evident by the how scooters are taking over the market. Talking about scooters, let us move on to what Honda has been up to in the scooter market. We have all witnessed how Honda scooters, like the Aviator and the Dio, have been doing exceptionally well in the market. Now, they have a new addition to their range with the all new Honda Grazia. With the recent launch of the Grazia, we decided to take it out for a spin and bring you our thoughts on how this scooter performs.

DESIGN AND FEATURES

The first thing that you will notice about the Grazia, is how Honda has put in some serious effort to make the scooter stand out with sharp angular lines throughout the body, giving it some sort of a sporty feel. However, all of this has been done elegantly and we must say the shade of red, that we got for the test ride, just looked amazing. Looking at it from the front, it looks like the scooter takes inspiration from the CBR series of motorcycles with a sharp and muscular front. The Grazia gets an all LED Headlight setup which is a first in its segment. Also, it gets an all-digital console with speedometer and tachometer on the top with a second smaller console that displays the trip meter, fuel gauge and time. Another interesting feature on the Grazia is the Eco Speed Meter. Unlike the eco-meter that we usually see on scooters, the unit on the Grazia has 3 indicator lights to show the most economical speed. Apart from this, the scooter gets an all new 4-in-1 key system that includes seat lock switch which gives you access to the 18 liters of storage space. Also, you get a side space compartment upfront where you can store your mobile phone and there’s even to install a port through which you can charge your phone. All in all, the Grazia is equipped with an array of features that make the scooter so convenient. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2018 63

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE

The Grazia comes with a 124.9cc, single cylinder, air cooled engine based on the Activa 125. The engine comes mated to a CVT system and produces maximum power of 8.5bhp at 6500rpm and maximum torque of 10.5NM at 5000rpm. The engine on the Grazia is just as graceful as it looks and it just feels really refined. Honda has always been known for their amazing refinement of their engine and the Grazia stays true to the statement. Hit the electric start button on the Grazia and the extremely refined nature of the engine is immediately apparent. The motor is in its element for low to midrange power and is easily one of the quickest scooters off the line. The Grazia can effortlessly pull off speeds above 65Kmph without any wobbling and we must say that it did feel really balanced and stable even at higher speeds. The performance of the Grazia is something that will definitely grow on you. The scooter barely has any vibrations and feels just as smooth as butter. The power delivery is smooth through out the rev range and as mentioned earlier, you can barely feel any vibrations, even on higher revs. While Honda has positioned the Grazia as an urban scooter, it is capable of handling highway runs with ease. The scooter was easily capable of going up to speeds of 75kmph but the engine started feeling a little stressed after that. Overall, the Grazia’s performance is something that you would only expect from a Honda.

COMFORT AND HANDLING

The Grazia comes with a seat height of 766mm and a ground clearance of 155mm. The seats on the Grazia were broad and there was plenty of space for two people to sit on comfortably. Even the leg space was on the bigger side, taller people won’t have much of an issue of having their knees getting cramped on the Grazia. The telescopic forks also held up pretty well and handled most of the potholes. The plush seats combined with the suspensions and soft grips of the handlebar kept the vibrations at bay. The Grazia gets 10-inch alloys at the rear and 12 inches at the front with 100/90-10 and 90/90-12 tubeless tires. The handling felt pretty light and the scooter was manageable even while doing quick flips to get through the traffic. The handling on the Grazia felt very smooth and well balanced. Also, with a weight of only 107kgs, the Grazia was a treat to ride in the urban jungle of Kathmandu and the rideability wasn’t at all taxing to the rider. Also, to make things better, the scooter comes with combibraking system and we have to say that the brakes did their job exceptionally well. Overall, the Grazia is a fun, comfortable and easy to handle urban commuter.

VERDICT

For a 125cc scooter, there’s hardly any place that you can complain about the Grazia. Honda has indeed pulled off a perfect combination of looks and performance on the Grazia. The scooter is a fun urban commuter and a breeze to ride around in the city. The engine has a pretty smooth feel to it and has almost close to no vibrations at all and the Grazia is indeed really practical on both streets and highways. Also, the new features on the Grazia serve as an attraction to young professionals and college students who need a friendly commuter to get by on a daily basis. With a price tag that starts from Rs. 2,01,900/- and backed by all the features along with the looks and smooth performance, we think that the Grazia can definitely do good in the 125cc scooter segment.

BAJAJ MOTOGRAPHY

AN ODYSSEY OF THE

DOMINARS WORDS: PRASHANT MANANDHAR | PHOTOS: ANKIT R. TULADHAR

The sense of connection with where you go, the places, the new landscapes, the environment and the true feeling of freedom are only some of the essence that you can get with travelling on a motorcycle. The adventure of venturing into new destinations and setting on a journey of an experience moving through time and space on an amazing machine is something that every avid motorcyclist dream of. This is all what Bajaj Motography is set out to state; the odyssey of 13 Dominars set out to explore the open roads of Tibet and provide the riders with an exhilarating experience of adventure. It was indeed a trip of a lifetime for all the riders. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2018 69

The essence of motorcycle lifestyle and travelling is what Bajaj Motography stood for, all in all. The whole tour lasted for 10 days, starting off on 20th May, 2018 and ending on 29th May, 2018. For this trip to the roof of the world, 11 Dominar owners were selected through a screening process conducted by Bajaj, a month prior to the event. So now, how did we, Autolife, come around to be a part of Motography? First off, apparently, I happened to own a Dominar and got selected for the trip, and to top it off Bajaj wanted Autolife to be a part of Motography, that’s how me and my teammate Ankit Tuladhar came around to be a part of the journey. The other 10 riders that were selected for Motography were Atish Chaudhary, Prashid Pandey, Suman Maharjan, Rupesh Shrestha, Jampa Dorje Gurung, Dev Shrestha, Roshan Maharjan, Prabin Tiwari, Kosis Parajuli and Abdul uncle, the most senior among us and one hell of a rider. The good people at Bajaj were kind enough to take care of all the travelling process for all of us and all the accommodation, fueling expenses and any other travel expenses were taken care of. In the end, thanks to Bajaj it was all about ride experience and none of had to worry about any of the hassle of travelling. It wasn’t just all about a motorcycle trip as well, it was even better. First off, Bajaj was generous to all the riders by providing each and every one with riding gears. Each rider got an amazing riding jacket from Alpha Riding Gears with the Motography logo branded on the arms, a badass helmet, gloves and riding boots from Acerbis. To top it all off, all the motorcycles even got impressive sticker job from VS moto. Everything just meant that we were all in for one hell of an experience that we are going to get to keep for the rest of our lives. Not just that, but Motography was something that brought together the aspects of motorcycle riding and the art of story telling as well. The riders were even a part of a competition of a sort, where the two lucky winners who would make the best videos of the trip would get two GoPro Hero 6. All in all, the whole trip was one complete package of exciting endeavors.

The tour started off early morning on the 20th May, 2018; all the riders got together and gathered at Golchha Organization’s office at Naxal at 5 a.m. There we got to meet our two marshals, Pasang Khambache Sherpa and Akhil Thakuri, who escorted us through the whole tour. We even had 2 personnel from Grande International Hospital for medical back up and a mechanic from Bajaj to make sure that both the riders and motorcycles were top notch throughout the whole tour. So, we were all set to travel to the roof of the world and reach our ultimate destination, the Everest Base Camp. After all the formalities were done, we set out for the ride somewhere around 7 am leaving the Golchha Organization Office. For the first day, we had to get through the border and reach Tibet, so we took the highway through Galchhi to Nuwakot then towards Rasuwa. The first day saw us riding through all kinds of different road conditions and by the looks of the highways of Nepal, we had to get through rough patches and complete off roads at times. All the rocky uphills and graveled roads did seem like a challenge at first because the Dominar wasn’t built for such terrains. But to everyone’s surprise the bike held itself quite well and conquered everything that we threw at them. Finally, after riding for almost 8 hours and roughly 165 kms, we finally reached the Nepal-China border at Rasuwa. But apparently due to some technical issues from the other side of the border, we couldn’t cross our bikes through and get it across. So, we had to leave our bikes there and we left for Kerung on the cars that the guide had booked for us. Our first night was spent at Kerung, acclimatizing to the slight altitude ascend and preparing facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

ourselves for the second day of ride. The weather was chilly and the sceneries were beautiful and the timings were what all of us were not used to, the sun would still be up, as late as 9 pm. Kerung was a small settlement which almost resembled a hill station. For the second day, the first thing on our head was when are we all getting to ride our bikes again. So, after having our breakfast at Kerung, we headed out to get our bikes across the border. But to our surprise the processings were still not taken care of and we had to wait in the parking lot of the Chinese Immigrations. After an agonizing long wait, which felt like an eternity, we finally got our hands on our bikes around late afternoon and finally, we were back on track. After all the offroading the previous day, we were pleased to see all the well-

pitched smooth roads with twists and turns all till Kerung, a heaven for all motorcycle riders. It was already evening and we still had somewhere around 300kms to cover till our next stop at New Tingri. It was a long and tough day of riding which led on to being a late-night ride as well. In between, we crossed one of the highest altitudes of the whole ride, 5200 meters, on our way. Things started getting chilly and all of us were only hoping that we would get to our stop soon. It was already midnight by the time we got to Old Tingri for our dinner, but we were still 70 kms from where we were lodging for the night. After rigorous riding through day and night, we were finally at our hotel at New Tingri. We were lodged at some of the best places around Tibet and the accommodations were top notch. So, there wasn’t anything facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

to complain about after long hard day of riding. By the end of second day we had already covered 530 kms. For the third day, we headed out to Shigatse from New Tingri and set on the straight open roads of Tibet. Throughout the whole trip, Shigatse was among the more developed cities after Lhasa which was our next stop. So, on the fourth day after 1044 kms of riding from Kathmandu, we finally reached Lhasa. I have to say, that Lhasa had something mesmerizing about it and reflected the beauty of Tibet. It indeed was a beautiful city and over the time, Lhasa has developed quite well. And to add to the beauty of Lhasa, the view of Potala palace was just extraordinary. The fifth day was a rest from all the riding and a day for all the riders to soak up on the beauty of Lhasa and some even visited the Potala Palace. After a day of rest and getting everyone’s energy revitalized for another day of riding, we set on for our 6th day, the ride to Gyantse from Lhasa. The sceneries on the open roads were just breathtaking and there were times when you realize how a motorcycle can connect you to places, igniting a sense of happiness that only riding can deliver. The long hours of riding didn’t feel tiring with all the amazing sights that we came across and just like it our 6th and 7th day passed by with 1670kms and lodged at New Tingri again at the end of the day. Through all the various altitudes and high winds that almost blowing our bikes off of the roads, we were close to our ultimate destination, the Everest Base Camp. 7 days had passed by and our trusted steeds were still going strong. The Bajaj Dominar is indeed a capable ride and didn’t

seem give up, no matter what we threw at them. It even held up well against all the high altitudes and didn’t die out on us. There did seem to be a certain lag in the power output but nothing that would be bothersome. Still going strong, on the 8th day, we started our ride to the base camp. It was amazing how the roads were so well developed; we came down almost 100 turns through a pass on our way to the base camp. Everything just felt ecstatic and the beauty was just beyond something that was describable. The moment all of us reached the base camp, we were just all quiet, sinking in to the mesmerizing beauty of the view right in front of us. Mt. Everest was just right in front of us and we knew that finally we had conquered what we all came to do and realized all the amazing memories that we had created in the past week. Finally, we are almost at the end of Motography and on the 9th and 10th day we were back on the track to getting back home. After a tiring roadtrip, all of us were left with unforgettable memories from the roof of the world. And in the end, Motography was something that showcased the capabilities of the sports tourer, Dominar. Not only that, but all of us will be taking away one thing or the other from the whole trip; some maybe from the Potala Palace, some from the beautiful sceneries or be it with the massive Tibetan Mastif and the Yaks that we saw on the roads. At the end of the 10 days, there was a bond that was created among the riders which will stay on even after this. Rounding off at 2400kms, Motography was indeed a lifetime worth of memories and something that definitely created a statement of its own.

AUTOLIFE GEARS

THE ESSENTIALS FOR THE RIDERS’ SAKE

Riding GLOVES Gears: COMPILED BY: PRASHANT MANANDHAR

We are back with yet another series of riding gears where we will be talking about the importance of another piece of safety gear. We have explained in our first series about why it is essential to protect yourself in case of an accident or a crash with the help of safety gears. Whereas, in our second installment of riding gears, we talked about the importance of wearing a helmet and how it can protect you during accidents and crashes. We have tried to make it evident how a motorcycle does not provide the structural protection that a car can, which is why every one needs to give riding gears a thought and invest in them. This time around we will be looking into riding gloves and discuss on how they are a vital aspect for motorcycle riding. Motorcycle safety gear is incomplete without a pair of gloves. Apart from making the rider look stylish, gloves protect the knuckles, fingers, palms, wrist and all the vital parts of the hand from injuries and abrasions. Without a good pair of riding gloves, you would be compromising on the safety of your hand. It’s almost unimaginable to get by an week with bruised hands. Day to day activities that involve your hands from eating to going to the loo would be a nightmare with bruised hands. So, just like how everyone thinks helmets are important for protecting your head, people need to make sure that they always have a pair of riding gloves when riding motorcycles.

with extra paddings around the palms and the inner parts of the hands to lessen the impact during a crash. Also, some gloves are armored around the knuckles, wrists and fingers, protecting the joints and bones. Apart from being a safety apparel, riding gloves are fashionable too and make you look like a badass. All in all, you cannot go wrong with investing in a good pair of riding gloves. Moving on, let’s talk about some of the reasons to

Everyone has a survival instinct and whenever we tend to fall off, it’s just our reflex action to throw our hands out to catch ourselves from the fall. This is true even when riding motorcycle, so, when we are in motion and crash, the palm of our hands are the first to contact the ground and take most of the impact. To make matters worse, our palms have very delicate skin and has a lot of nerve endings. This basically means that they get bruised really easily. In a high-speed accident, your hands are being thrown about like weights at the end of a rope; they slam to the ground, drag or might get stuck under a moving body. Having a good pair of gloves can lessen the damage and save you from a lot of hassle and pain that you will have to deal with due to bruised hands. Motorcycle gloves can be found in different forms with some being made from different kinds of leathers such as cowhide, goatskin, etc. or from strong textile materials with abrasion resistant qualities. Riding gloves come in different forms ranging from race gloves, full length gauntlets, fingerless, and motocross styled gloves. But basically, all of these serve the same purpose of protecting your hands. Riding gloves come

always have a pair of gloves on at anytime or any season through out the year. We have talked about what could happen if we don’t have gloves on, now we look into the reasons that make these riding gears as important as we have all heard it to be. REASON NO. 1

Falls are unpredictable. No matter how long you have been riding for or how skilled you are, you can still fall. Accidents can happen anytime, therefore, it is better to always have a pair of gloves on to save yourself from getting bruised hands. REASON NO. 2

If you have ever had a small cut on your hands, you know very well how much it hurts. Your hands are what connects you to the motorcycle and are important for riding. In order to protect your hands from many different elements so you can continue to ride with ease, wear your gloves.

Are they available in different sizes? – Comfort is just as important as safety. You need gloves that are comfortable and secure. Do they come with matching motorcycle clothing? – This is something optional, but you need to think about being fashionable as well, don’t you? We have covered almost everything from the reasons for wearing gloves to what to look for while getting yourself a pair of gloves. However, many riders overlook the importance of riding gloves just because they aren’t mandatory by law. But we honestly think that riding gloves are just as important as wearing a helmet. So, just think about getting by a week with bruised hands and then you can think about missing out on gloves.

REASON NO. 3

Instinctively, you always throw out your hands to catch yourself during a fall and protect other body parts during a crash. Doing so means that you can bruise your hand really bad if you are not wearing proper riding gloves. REASON NO. 4

Gloves can even help to prevent hand numbness. If you are someone who has been riding for a long time, you probably know that your hands tend to get numb during long rides. You need to feel your hands to have complete control over your motorcycle, so never miss out on the gloves. REASON NO. 5

Grip is another safety feature that gloves offer. Sweaty palms mean that they can slip any moment and you could eventually lose control of your motorcycle. Gloves make sure that you don’t have to worry about losing your grip. We have been emphasizing a lot on the essentials of wearing a good pair of riding gloves. But, what do we need to look for while we are investing in riding gloves? There is a vast range of gloves in the market with various protective features. To make browsing a little bit easier, consider this checklist: Do they have anti-slip grip? – As mentioned earlier in reason no. 5, having anti-slip gloves will stop your hand from slipping and keep you in complete control of your motorcycle. Do they have padded palms? – Palms are very sensitive and can get bruised easily. Padded palms reduce the impact on your palms during a crash. They even help in reducing the vibrations transferred to your hands and prevent numbness.

MARIO KART 8 DELUXE The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is arguably the pinnacle of the Mario franchise and is the very best representation of the Mario Kart series. The core gameplay concept of Mario Kart is characters from the Mario series each with different capabilities racing against each other while they pick up items like banana peels and bombs to use to their advantage. The graphics is a full 1080p at 60fps during gameplay and also includes a battle mode. The monsoons are upon us and the road conditions deteriorates even more. Not to forget that the visibility out there during a rainy day is going to be pretty bad. Even if you have the sharpest eye which can see the smallest hazard potential, the same can’t be said for others. Being seen is important so you’ll want to wear something that will screams for attention. Normally, the go to safety color would be fluorescent yellow but we’re not trying to burn retinas here so we’re going with fluorescent orange which is a pretty cool color if you ask me. It’ll grab any weary motorists eyes and at the same time you won’t look like a dork. No offence to those that wears the fluorescent yellow. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
