I bought Hyundai i20 Active during the NADA Auto Show this year. The thing that attracted me most about the vehicle was its looks, exterior and interior features. Besides those, this car has the best sound system and offers a big cabin space as compared to others in this segment. The seats are comfortable for both passengers and driver. I haven’t been on any long trips up until now as it’s been only 15 days that I have purchased it. However, I use it for daily commute and find it quite comfortable even on the harsh roads. Because of the good ground clearance, I don’t have to worry about any damage and the suspension works pretty well on bumpy roads, turning it into a comfortable drive. Since this car has a good power delivery, I believe the i20 Active will be a pleasurable drive even on the highways. Whereas, inside the city, the car is easy to maneuver in tight corners and because of the body frame of this car it is easy to park as well.

ello once again my friend!

With the feeling of festivity surrounding us, aren’t we all glad to have the opportunity to meet up with our beloved family or go out on lavishing vacations. Also it’s the time when the roads will be empty and would be a great time to go for a drive or ride! Speaking of which, you might actually have the opportunity to spot the star of this issue out during this open window. But mind you, this model is silent and fast so chances are it’ll zip right past you! In fact it might have already happened. We’re talking about the elegant Hyundai Ioniq Electric. This electric vehicle is one of the best we’ve ever come across and it doesn’t seem to be lacking anywhere. It’s fast, it’s beautiful and it’s efficient! Then of course, we’ve also had the opportunity to test drive the magnificent Skoda Kodiaq and this luxury SUV is nothing short of neat features and tech; it’s got a lot of nifty features that definitely remind us that it’s the little things that matter and this SUV definitely got it right. And also before the festive seasons, we had an interview with Toyota Nepal’s General Manager, Mahesh Kumar M. who gave us insights about their all new SUV, the Toyota Rush. For the motorcycle enthusiasts, don’t worry, we’ve got a test ride for you this time around and we believe it’s the hero to us everyday folks; we bring you the Honda CB Hornet 160R. This everyday naked bike is all about style, power and being a Honda, it’s got their signature refinement and efficiency as well. We also talk about another legendary motorcycle and that’s the Harley Davidson! The American motorcycle manufacturer has recently made its way into Nepal and what better time to learn more about why Harley’s are so awesome than right now? We’ll dive into the roots of what makes a Harley a Harley in the evolution of Harley Davidsons. Do you know the way power is delivered from a motorcycle engine to its rear wheel isn’t only done by chain? Yep, there is actually more than one variation and we’ve gone about what you need to know about them in “What drives your motorcycle”. We also continue the Riding Gear Series with Riding boots this time for the 6th installment. You’d probably want to give this article a read before you head off on your road trip since you’ll never know when you might learn a lifesaving tip. The Team have included some simple guidelines you can follow should you get into an accident although it’s useful information we hope you’ll never have to use it in “Fender bender, steps to take after an accident”. All in all, the Autolife team wishes you a joyous festive season and that you live these moments with your loved ones with fond memories. SUZUKI KATANA UNVIELED Suzuki Katana is back after 13-year and it looks awesome. The retro standard bike with a 999cc inline-four engine makes an impressive 147 horsepower and 79 pound-feet of torque. The powerplant has been tweaked for the Katana to deliver smoother throttle response and a wider torque band, along with improved induction and exhaust sound. It’s fuel injected, liquid cooled, and has what Suzuki calls “Low RPM Assist” which helps adjust your RPM at low revs to prevent you from stalling. The new Katana offers three-mode traction control system, which can be turned all the way off. Mode 1 has low sensitivity and is best suited for sporty riding on good, clean roads. Mode 2 turns up the sensitivity a bit and Mode 3 provides maximum protection, which is good for riding in the rain. There’s a nice central LCD screen delivering just about all of the information you could want, and the bike has a cool LED headlight with a squarish shape. It’s very reminiscent of the original Katana in the 1980s. The new bike has a twin-spar aluminum alloy frame with the main tubes running from the steering head all the way to the swingarm pivot to ensure high rigidity and low weight. The bike’s curb weight is a fairly light 474 pounds. Stopping power comes from disc brakes with Brembo calipers and standard ABS.

WITH THE TOYOTA RUSH ALREADY DOING WELL IN THE MARKET, WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR THE BRAND IN THE COMPACT SUV SEGMENT?

Well, we introduced the all new Toyota Rush in the Nepalese market to provide the customer as an option for an affordable SUV in its range. Although the model is not in comparison to our Land cruiser series, it is a perfect SUV for the Nepalese Market. The Rush has done wonders throughout every country it has been launched and we aim to reach at least 20% of the Compact SUV boom Market of Nepal within the middle of next year. In terms of our brand, I believe Toyota Worldwide is planning to introduce new models in various segments and have been focusing their attention to South West Asian and Asia Pacific countries. We believe that these new models would be appropriate for countries like ours and will be launched pretty soon in the near future.

BEING IN ONE OF THE MOST COMPETITIVE SEGMENTS IN THE FOUR-WHEELER INDUSTRY, WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES THE RUSH UNIQUE AND THE USP OF THE VEHICLE THAT MAKES IT STAND OUT FROM ITS COMPETITORS?

HOW HAVE YOU PLANNED TO GO ON ABOUT THE AFTER SALES SERVICE OF THE VEHICLE?

Not only Rush but any product we launch needs to have the best after sales service. In terms of our service personnel, we had our Toyota technicians attend the Rush’s technical training in Thailand to handle any kind of service related issues and provide the best service. In terms of our spare parts availability, we have always maintained a proper stock level to provide any of our customer with quick, prompt and easy service.

AS OF RECENTLY, HOW HAS THE MARKET SCENARIO BEEN FOR TOYOTA?

Previously we have had a major share and were market leaders in luxury SUV, pick up and commuter segments. Now, we have finally launched a SUV in our lineup for the middle high-income segment customers who can own and experience the Toyota quality.

LASTLY, WHAT OTHER VEHICLES ARE YOU PLANNING TO BRING IN THE NEPALESE MARKET?

Well, we are working on some new model introductions in the near future and we definitely want to expand our reach of lineup for the customers. As and upon confirmation, we shall release some statements in future for some confirmed introduction timings and other details for any new lineup.

This segment is definitively competitive, but what separates us or our products throughout Nepal or even worldwide is the Quality, Durability and Reliability of our products. Also, in terms of Rush, the product has been made specifically for a market like ours, with the 220mm minimum running ground clearance, ASEAN NCAP 5-star Safety Ranking, Hill Assist, 6 Airbags, EA, VSC, SUV driver point of view, Submersion Ratio of the vehicle to transverse the flooded alleyways or the river banks of Nepal. Along with such technical aspects, we believe that the Rush has an exterior that gets its design cues from Toyota’s Rav4 or FORTUNER, through its bold, dynamic design and exterior. You need to drive the RUSH to feel the reason why once people own a Toyota, they are a Toyota customer for life.

HOW MUCH OF THE MARKET SHARE ARE YOU PLANNING TO CAPTURE WITH THE RUSH? AND WHAT KIND OF APPROACH ARE YOU TAKING IN TERMS OF MARKETING THE VEHICLE?

We want to start slowly and are only targeting 20% of the current compact SUV market share. As we are in terms of product positioning and price positioning differently from the current brands presence of other products, we want to introduce the Rush as the next step to our current available models. In terms of marketing, we have been a little more aggressive with the Rush. We have been currently using print media, online media, reviews, road tests, touch and feel sessions, social media platforms and so-on. We are taking an overall 360-degree marketing strategy to put the product presence at the point of contact to the lead customers of the Toyota Rush.

M

ostly when SUV’s come into question, the rough rugged vehicles meant to go on extreme off roads is what comes to mind. Does the Kodiaq have the same structure? The Skoda Kodiaq is the first seven seater SUV offering from the brand. Mostly known for their sedans, does their SUV have what it takes to compete against its rivals? With very strong competition from rival brands such as the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavor. There has been quite a stiff competition over which vehicle out sells the other and now there is a new competitor in the segment. We will have to find out how the Kodiaq will stack up against its competition in this review. EXTERIOR The exterior of the Kodiaq states that it is more after luxury than out right off roading capability, it has the smooth flowing lines and an elegant stance rather than the macho SUV stance. The lighting duty is taken care by LED all around, from full LED headlights, LED DRLs (Day time Running Lamps), LED fog lamps and LED taillights. Everything is lit up using LED lighting. The Headlight looks similar to the one available on the Skoda Superb, it is by no means a bad thing because the headlight on the Superb was very attractive. The DRLs and how the headlights light up these lines that looks very aggressive. There is a headlight washer that pops out can cleans the headlights every 10th time you clean the windshield. The headlights sandwich the signature Skoda grille. The Kodiaq being a seven seater vehicle, it is pretty long. The sides don’t have much going on other than the flared

wheel arches and a crease line running from the headlight all the way to the taillight. At the back, the all LED taillights look very elegant when they light up. The boot has a smart unlock feature where you swipe your legs under the rear bumper to open it if your hands are occupied. Since it is electrically operated you can close it with a push of a button on the boot, another way to open/close the boot is press and hold the boot button on the key fob. INTERIOR The luxury and the interior is where the Kodiaq excels, it sort of feels like a jacked up Skoda Superb. There are small details that make the experience even more sophisticated like a rubber strip that comes out when you open any of the four doors. This is to protect the doors from bumps and it hides in while closing the door. There are two Skoda branded umbrellas on each of the front doors. The interior is very well made with premium materials used all along the dash board, doors are seats. The soft touch materials on the dash feel very nice to the touch and the light beige and black makes for a very nice visual experience. The seats are very comfortable as they are well padded and provide plenty of support. Both the front seat are electrically operated with memory function, meaning that you can save you preferred position and whenever someone changes the position you can go back to that position on the push of a button without having to figure out which position it was. The 8 inch touch screen infotainment system sits in the center of the dash with capacitive touch button on either side. There are two compartments for the glove box the bottom one is a ventilated glove box to keep your stuff cool. The A/C buttons are located under the screen. The A/C is a triple zone unit unlike the more common dual zone A/C meaning that the two people in front can have their own desired temperature while the rear passengers can have their own temperature. There is ambient lighting present in the vehicle that lights up in different colors that you can choose from. The Kodiaq plaque on the door sill is also illuminated. There is a massive panoramic sunroof, the sunroof and the blinds are electrically operated. The sunroof gives extra brightness to the already well lit cabin. The second row of seats are pretty spacious and have comfortable seats, even though there is a massive sunroof there is adequate amount of headroom for the passengers. The second row seats have a very interesting feature called the power NAP package, you can take a nap without the fear of you head slipping from the headrest. There are two support that you can open from both sides of the headrest to keep your head steady when taking a nap in the car. Skoda have also included two blankets to keep you warm and cozy while you take a nap. The third row of seats is mainly meant for children as there isn’t a lot of space for larger people. The second row seats just slide to open the way to the third row of seats which is a little tight. If the seats you tumble in front then getting into the third row would be easier. The

32

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2018

boot is decent when the third row seats are up but the seats fold flat that makes the boot level and easy to load luggage. If extra space is required the second row of seats can be folded too. There is a small LED light in the boot to make it easier at night times, but it doubles up as a portable torch light since it is removable and can be stuck to the vehicles body as it is magnetic too. PERFORMANCE The Kodiaq is powered by a 1968cc turbocharged diesel engine producing 150 PS of power @ 3500 – 4000 RPM and 340 Nm of torque @ 1750 – 3000 RPM. The torque kicks in pretty low and as soon as it crosses the peak point of the torque the power starts to kick in giving a linear acceleration. There were different driving modes available to match you driving conditions such as eco, city, sport, individual and snow. The eco and the city modes are more economy focused, the sport mode makes the accelerator response faster and the gears are held longer. The 7 speed DSG gearbox is very smooth in operation, when in sport mode

THE INTERIOR IS VERY WELL MADE WITH PREMIUM MATERIALS USED ALL ALONG THE DASH BOARD, DOORS ARE SEATS. THE SOFT TOUCH MATERIALS ON THE DASH FEEL VERY NICE TO THE TOUCH AND THE LIGHT BEIGE AND BLACK MAKES FOR A VERY NICE VISUAL EXPERIENCE

the gear changes are very fast while shifting it manually. This increases the fun of using the paddle shifter. The Kodiaq does have a 4X4 system so it can handle some off-road terrains but due to the limited 188mm ground clearance it could struggle a bit. This vehicle handles more like a sedan, even though it is long and heavy it feels very quick on its feet. The Kodiaq feels planted through turns and inspires confidence to push it harder. SAFETY The Kodiaq packed with safety equipments such as 9 airbags, Antilock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Anti Slip Regulation (ASR), Electronic Differential lock System (EDS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), parking sensors, rear view camera, automatic hands free parking, etc. All these safety features make the Kodiaq a very safe vehicle to drive around in. VERDICT The Skoda Kodiaq is not a full on off road vehicle, it is more off a luxury SUV with almost sedan like driving capabilities. There are a lot of neat touches that make the experience that much more luxurious. If you are in the market for a big seven seater SUV that is more focused towards luxury than there aren’t many vehicle in the market that can match the Kodiaq’s luxury in that category, but if you are looking for a big seven seater SUV to go off roading then the Kodiaq might not be the right pick for you. Priced at Rs. 1,49,00,000/- there are a lot of features packed in this vehicle.

WHAT DRIVES YOUR

MOTORCYCLE?

Contributed by Kalash Ratna Tuladhar, Founder at Iron Monk Works: Mr. Tuladhar is a graduate from the Minnesota State University in Automotive Engineering Technology. He formerly worked for MV Agusta and Bikers Nepal as the Head of after sales.

Hello again auto enthusiasts, this month I’ll be giving you an insight into your motorcycle’s final drive mechanism. The reason it is called the final drive mechanism is because it is responsible for transferring the energy produced by the engine to the tyres and eventually to the ground, propelling you forward. There are three commonly used mechanisms on motorcycles; chain drive, belt drive and shaft drive. Let’s see why and where these three mechanisms are used and its advantages and disadvantages.

CHAIN DRIVES

Chain driven motorcycles, as we’ve seen it is the most common drive mechanism, use two sprockets and a chain. A smaller sprocket is connected to the transmission shaft on the engine and a larger sprocket is connected to the hub of the rear wheel which are both connected by a chain. When the clutch is engaged and the transmission shaft turns the smaller sprocket, also known as the driving sprocket, it pulls on the chain and in turn rotates the rear sprocket or the driven sprocket. Chain drives are most common because it is very inexpensive and also because the maintenance on it is very simple. Although its biggest advantage is cost and simplicity in maintenance, its biggest disadvantage compared to the other drive mechanisms is it requires the most frequent maintenance. It needs to be lubricated and tensioned frequently and the whole mechanism needs replacement at frequent intervals. Riders can, however, change the gearing of their motorcycles quite easily by just swapping out different sized sprockets either at the front, rear or both, to give their motorcycles a different gearing ratio, which done with proper calculations will make the motorcycle perform a whole lot differently. That in itself is a topic of discussion for a future article.

38

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2018

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

BELT DRIVES Belt driven motorcycles are not fairly common in Nepal aside from a few Harley Davidson motorcycles we see now and then, but are used in all commuter scooters we find here. Belt drives are a little more expensive than chain drives but their biggest advantage is that it requires fairly no maintenance at all. Once the belt wears out, the only maintenance for it is to replace it. it has almost no customisability for people wanting to change their drive ratios like that available on chain drives but what it offers is a reliable problem free riding experience. The belts are similar to the timing belts found on four wheelers, which is made of rubber and Kevlar strands. This unique composition brings flexibility and strength to the belt which offers a longer life than the chain drives.

Table 1: Drive mechanisms compared DRIVE MECHANISM

MAINTENANCE COST

REPLACEMENT COST

MAINTENANCE REQ.

Chain drive Belt drive Shaft drive

Now that you have a better understanding of how and why different drive mechanisms exist, choose what best suits your needs and always perform a thorough inspection before heading out for a ride. If you take care of your vehicle, it will take care of you and won’t leave you stranded in the middle of the road. Adios and safe riding, everyone.

SHAFT DRIVES

A shaft driven motorcycle is the most maintenance free option of the three mechanisms, which transfers the energy of the engine through a metal rod all the way to the rear wheel. Its biggest advantage is that there is virtually no maintenance required and it offers the smoothest riding experience. This mechanism is widely common on rear wheel driven four wheelers. On motorcycles, this is mostly used on cruisers and adventure touring motorcycles like the BMW R1200GS. Since these motorcycles are used for long distance travels, this mechanism makes it more feasible for cruisers and adventure tourers. The biggest disadvantage is that it is very expensive, very heavy and offers no customisability. Now that we’ve seen the differences of these three mechanisms, let’s talk a little about how efficient these three systems are. The shaft driven motorcycle is the most reliable form of drive mechanism, which is treated nicely will last as long as the motorcycle itself. But due to the way it operates, having to convert the engines torque 90° once from the engine and once at the wheel causes a massive energy loss, so although they are the most reliable, they are also the most inefficient with power loss of up to 25%. Belt driven motorcycles have a fairly lower power loss compared to the shaft driven ones, at 9% but it needs frequent maintenance at around 25,000-65,000 km depending on the quality of the belt. The replacement of these belts on motorcycles is fairly difficult and time consuming, which requires the removal of the entire swing arm from the frame. They also require bigger pulleys as belts aren’t as flexible as chains and due to this reason it isn’t that feasible on smaller motorcycles as space is a big constraint. Chain drives are very maintenance heavy but they are very efficient. Their power losses are calculated to be around less than 4%. This is the reason that we see this mechanism used on sport bikes, drag bikes, dirt bikes, etc. where the rider requires maximum power transfer to the wheel. It also fits in a more compact package. But it requires maintenance every few hundred kilometres and the whole setup needs replacement at around 20,000 to 40,000 km. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

F

ossil fueled vehicles have been the most popular means of transport for the longest of times, be it two wheelers or four. It’s the massive spike in the consumption of fossil fuels leading to the depletion of its source and looks to be scarce in the future. Not only this but the amount of pollution caused by the carbon monoxide emitted by vehicles have become quite an issue so the automakers started looking for more eco-friendly alternative that we can use when we are short of fossil fuels and came the birth of electric vehicles. Electric vehicles have been around for sometime now but in the recent years is when there has been the most development in this segment, mainly due to the fact that Tesla showed the world what electric powered vehicles can do. Now other companies have joined the party and have brought in their electric vehicle. It’s not new in other countries but we haven’t seen much of electric vehicles here in Nepal, the most popular electric vehicles being the Mahindra Reva E20 and the Kia Soul EV. Hyundai showcased their electric vehicle the Ioniq at this year’s NADA show and was quite the show stopper. There would always be a crowd of people around the vehicle trying to get a proper glimpse of the vehicle. So with that much anticipation already built up with what we read in the brochure so we were stoked when we realized we were getting the chance to sit behind the wheel of this gorgeous vehicle.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

EXTERIOR

The Ioniq looks very classy, the exterior of the car has been designed with elegance in mind and all the angles exude that. The dual projector setup looks very striking with the LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lamps) located in the fog light area. The grille looks different as it is a single piece coming in a greyish shade. It has a very distinctive look that gets people looking and grabs a lot of attention. There is quite a bit of thought given to the aerodynamics of this car as it includes an active aero flap below the front grille that opens and closes. It cleverly adjusts to the right aerodynamic configuration with the two air curtains which passes air through to the front wheels from where the DRLs are located. The side profile of the Ioniq is simple yet elegant; the 16 inch alloy wheels look good with the dual tone finish to it. Our only gripe about it is that fact that it could do better with a larger set of rims like with either a 17 or even an 18 inch, but the 16 inch rim would still get the job done. The sloping roof looks very coupe like and the boot opens up like a hatch back meaning the rear glass opens up with the boot. The glass is split in two pieces, with the inclusion of the normal rear windshield, there is a portion between the taillights and above the Hyundai logo that’s made out of glass too, which lets up peak into the boot. It does look very stylish indeed but it somewhat compromises the privacy factor with the open boot. AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2018 41

INTERIOR

The interior is one of the most exciting aspects of the Ioniq, it’s packed with pretty well equipped features for convenience and safety which gives the interior a premium feel. You’re welcomed by beautiful leather seats that are electrically adjusted from the driver’s side. The subtle orange accents and stitching seen all around the interior especially the along dash board gives an especially sporty look. The seats are very comfortable and more importantly provide a good amount of support to hold you in place. You’ll find out why we said that later on. The dual zone climate control has become a staple feature of most cars as the comfort of the driver and the passenger is necessary but what’s extra in the Ioniq is it offers extra ventilated seats. The front seats can be heated or cooled however the rear seats can only be heated. Plus the steering wheel can be heated, so say goodbye to those chilly winter mornings and sweat stained backs. Getting back to the steering wheel, the flat bottomed steering wheel has a very sporty feel with all the connectivity buttons and the cruise control buttons laid out nicely on each side if the wheel. There are two paddles behind the steering wheel, one on each side. Normally it would be a paddle shifter to change gears but in this case it’s a little different. The paddles are there to control the regenerative braking control feature. If you look behind the steering wheel there is a 7 inch color TFT. LCD supervision cluster taking the over from the conventional instrument cluster. It is

42

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2018

a pretty high resolution screen with crisp graphics that change according to the mode you have chosen to drive in. There is a 5 inch touchscreen infotainment system which is pretty slick to use but is on the smaller side as cars are usually equipped with 7 inch or bigger screens. The buttons below the screen makes the using experience more fluid since it has shortcut buttons; all are laid out neatly. The gear system is quite unique compared to the conventional gear stick; it’s actually replaced with buttons to do the job. There is an individual electric gear shift button for Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive along with an electronic parking brake. Next to the gear shift buttons is the wireless charging pad for compatible smartphones so you don’t have to carry around a cable to charge your phone if it has wireless charging capability. All of this is housed within a plastic piece with a magnificent piano black finish. The electronically operated sunroof adds light to an otherwise dark cabin. The rear seats are comfortable to sit in, with decent leg room. Though the coupe like sloping roof is something we love, it however eats a little into the headroom for the tall folks. The rear seats fold in a 60:40 split to open up more luggage space. Due to the whole rear boot section opening up, it gives an access somewhat like a hatchback. The Ioniq lacks a spare wheel due to the fact that there is battery stored under the boot, where the spare wheel would usually be but it comes with a portable air pump that uses power from the vehicle to inflate just in case.

THE EXTERIOR OF THE CAR HAS BEEN DESIGNED WITH ELEGANCE IN MIND AND ALL THE ANGLES EXUDE THAT

PERFORMANCE AND HANDLING

Normally the concept in Nepal is that electric cars lack power and will struggle in a place like Nepal with such geographically diverse conditions. Also the fact that there aren’t many options when it comes to electric cars, the idea of the green energy is yet to be accepted. But give the Ioniq a try and you will understand why every car manufacturer is moving toward electric powered motors. The 28kWh churns a good 120Ps and 295 Nm of torque. There are three driving modes for you to choose from, the eco being the most battery saving mode giving more range to the vehicle. The city mode is in between the eco and the sport mode; it has decent range and a responsive engine while the sport mode goes into full power mode. The best thing about an electric motor

“

PUT THE IONIQ IN SPORT MODE AND IT TURNS INTO A TORQUE MONSTER. THE IMMENSE TORQUE WILL PIN YOU TO YOUR SEAT WHICH WILL LEAVE YOU WITH A BIG GRIN ACROSS YOUR FACE ALONG WITH AN ADRENALINE RUSH

is the instant torque which is available at all times. Put the Ioniq in sport mode and it turns into a torque monster. The immense torque will pin you to your seat which will leave you with a big grin across your face along with an adrenaline rush. There is another genius feature integrated into this vehicle which is the regenerative braking system, like mentioned earlier, the paddle shifters on the steering wheel does not change gears like the conventional paddle shifters, instead it’s used to adjust the level of regenerative braking. The left paddle increases the regenerative braking where as the right paddle decreases the level. What this does is when you lift you foot off the accelerator pedal the engine spins in the opposite direction and generates electricity that goes back into the battery to recharge itself, the level of braking depends on which level you have put the system on. The higher the level the more the battery will recharge but it sheds speed faster too. In some cases when there is some distance between you and the vehicle in front of you, you can let the regenerative braking system slow down the car for you. The steering felt very light and responsive making it a breeze to drive around town. It changed direction fast and with ease. The main concern is usually about charging electric vehicles so Hyundai designed the Ioniq with a charger that you can plug into any normal household electrical sockets. Depending on the electrical output it can charge in as little as 4 hours. On a full charge the claimed range is 220-250 kms in normal driving conditions without the AC turned on and with the AC turned and our road conditions you can expect the range to be somewhere around 170 - 200 kms.

44

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2018

SAFETY FEATURES

The Ioniq is pretty stacked up when it comes to safety features. It has 7 airbags to keep the driver and the occupant’s safe in a collision but there are even more safety features to reduce chances of that happening. With features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking system (AEB), Blind Spot Detection system (BSD), Lane Change Assist (LCA), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Proximity Sensors, Rear View Parking camera, etc. all of which work together to make sure you don’t see collision any time soon. The AEB system applies the brake automatically when it senses a pedestrian, vehicle or any other obstacles in front of you at certain speeds should you fail to react in time. The BSD system notifies you when there is something in the blind spot area of the vehicle so that you know there is something there even if you don’t see it in your mirror. The LCA helps you change lanes while driving and the LKA makes sure that you are not slowly going into another lane without signaling but this feature might not come in handy without proper lane markings. For instance when we were on the six lane highway, we let the car slowly go to the other lane with no signals and the car gave a beeping sound before correcting the lane automatically. So with all that you definitely won’t lack a sense of security while driving the Ioniq.

SPECIFICATIONS Engine: 88-Kilowatt Electric Motor Power Output: 118 hp Torque: 295 Nm Battery: Lithium-ion polymer Voltage: 360V Battery system capacity: 28.0 kWh On-board charger: 6.6 kW Drivetrain: Front Wheel Drive Front suspension: MacPherson Strut with coil springs and gas shock absorbers Rear suspension: Coupled Torsion Beam Axle Price: On Request

VERDICT

With so much hype around the Ioniq we had high expectations from it and it easily crossed our expectations and it was such a pleasure to drive around in it. Initially we were concerned about the fact that after being so accustomed to driving around in vehicles that runs on fossil fuel, driving around a vehicle which lacked engine noise would have us feeling uneasy but guess what? The experience of driving the Ioniq was so surreal that none of us actually noticed the silence. So with the immense torque, the luscious design, efficiency and the bragging rights of being environmentally friendly, we think the Ioniq is an excellent option in the market if you’re looking into electric vehicles.

THE MUCH-AWAITED

YAMAHA R15 V3.0

IS FINALLY HERE!

E

ver since Yamaha had first launched the R15 version 1.0 back in 2008, an all-new path to sports riding was paved to its enthusiasts. And since then, the R15 models have evolved and have been shaped into the R15 V2.0 in 2011 and later a facelift in 2016 which was called the R15 V1.5 or the R15-S. People have always trusted Yamaha as a premium brand and as of right now they are one of the only motorcycle brands that is offering an entry level sports bike in the 150cc category in India and Nepal. The R15 series hadn’t seen any significant upgrades after the V2.0, until now as we witnessed the launch of the R15 V3.0 at the Indian Auto Expo 2018. The V3.0 is a much sportier and premium looking iteration of the V2.0 and Yamaha has finally launched the highly anticipated Yamaha R15 V3.0 during the NADA Auto Show 2018. Let’s look into the details of the new entry level sport bike and see what makes it better than its predecessors.

46

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2018

We can definitely tell from the get go that the R15 V3.0 is a completely different model from the V2.0. The V3.0 gets an even sharper and sportier look than its predecessor. The looks of the R15 V3.0 have taken several styling cues from Yamaha’s flagship models like the R6 and the R1. The bike gets an all new LED headlight setup and LED tail lights. The new twin headlights are sleek and have helped to increase space for better air channeling from the front. The motorcycle also gets a new all-digital instrument cluster with features like instantaneous mileage, average fuel used, gear shift indicator, digital tachometer and VVA indicator. The ergonomics have also been changed to better suit the race track as it gets rear set foot pegs, lowered clip-ons and a raised seat height. The all new Yamaha R15 V3.0 gets a bigger single cylinder 155cc liquid cooled fuel-injected engine facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

with VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) that comes with a 4 valve SOHC (Single Overhead Cam) setup. The new 155cc engine on the R15 V3.0 comes mated to a 6-speed gear box and produces a maximum power output of 19bhp at 10,000rpm and peak torque of 14.7 Nm at 8,500 rpm. The new version even gets a slip and assist clutch setup that should make every day rides easier. All of these new enhancements are claimed to have improved the throttle response and performance of the bike significantly. Staying true to its light-weight nature, the full faired bike weighs in at 139kgs ensuring nimble handling. However, to keep things on the lighter end, the fuel capacity has been reduced to 11 liters which was previously 12 liters on the V2.0. The motorcycle continues to be based on the proven Delta frame chassis with telescopic front forks and a mono shock at the rear. However, the tire profile has been bumped up to 100/80 at the front and a massive 140/70-17 at the rear end. Sadly, the motorcycle misses out on USD (Up Side Down) front forks that the V3.0s get for the Indonesian market. Also, to keep the costs down, the Indian model also misses out on ABS but the brake size has been increased to 282mm at the front and 220mm at the rear. With a racing sports heritage, the Yamaha R15 V3.0 is a promising model and we can definitely expect the motorcycle to be widely accepted by the new generation of riders. Stay tuned with Autolife on a detailed review of how the Yamaha’s new sportster handles our roads or rather how the road handles it.

THE TALE OF THE HOGS

EVOLUTION OF HARLEY DAVIDSON

Harley Davidson is probably a name you’ve already heard or know about and for good reasons too. The American motorcycle brand and manufacturer is renowned throughout the world for its amazing cult following and history behind the logo. It is one of the few American Motorcycle companies to survive the Great Depression as well as many numerous subsidiary arrangements to become one of the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer and the iconic brand that it is today. Heck, Harley even has its own museum. Unfortunately for us, it’s in America but we’ve complied some interesting facts and events that occurred in Harley Davidson’s way to becoming a legendary motorcycle brand.

form somewhere right? And Harley Davidsons too came from humble beginnings. In Milwaukee Wisconsin, William S. Harley began envisioning and sketching designs for a motorized bicycle which you didn’t have to pedal that would eventually be called motorcycles and he got his childhood friend, Arthur Davidson to join in on to execute his project. They decided to build a 116cc pedal assisted motor bicycle and in two years the machine was finished and turned out to be more than nothing but valuable learning experience since the machine couldn’t climb up the hills of Milwaukee. They immediately pushed on and started on another project which would lead to the creation of the first real Harley Davidson motorcycle which had a bigger

engine of 405cc. After completion of the prototype motorcycle in 1904, Harley Davidson motorcycles started appearing in motorcycle show rooms in 1905 though in limited quantity and in 1906, Harley and Davidson built their first factory in Chestnut Street later known as Juneau Avenue, at the current locations of the HD corporate HQ. The company produced about 50 motorcycles a year and just a year later, the company increased its productions to 150 motorcycles per year. In September 1907, the company was officially incorporated and they also began selling their motorcycles to the police department, a market that have been important to them ever since around this time. In 1910, Harley Davidson trade marked the familiar logo we all have come to know. This is not something that a modern branding expert did but Harley himself made. Although over time it’s been dressed up a little bit but it really hasn’t changed much since then.

THE RISE TO GLORY From 1907 to the beginning of World War I in 1914, Harley Davidson Company increased its production from 450 units to 16,284 units which made Harley Davidson the king of motorcycle production in the world. At the end of the World War, the US military had a recorded purchase of over 20,000 Harley Davidson motorcycles. By 1920, Harley Davidson was officially the largest motorcycle company in the world. By this time, the largest motorcycle manufacturer, Harley Davidson boasted over 2000 dealers in 67 countries. In a span of 17 years, this is an amazing feat for its generation. During the 1920s, several improvements were put in place such as the new 1,212.6cc V twin which was introduced in 1922 and the teardrop gas tank which was introduced in 1925.

Harley Davidson’s factory racing team was well known as the Wrecking Crew which came from their dominance in American Racing and it is famed for the Smoked Pig which was their mascot. Now if you know anything about Harley Davidson, you’d know that they’re called The Hogs and it came from the famous Harley racer who would pick up this baby pig and run a lap around the track with it as a victory lap. In 1928, Harley motorcycle had a top speed of little over a 160kmph with the addition of the twin cam which was really fast for that timeline. But the roads weren’t able to sustain such speeds then, even the fastest car in races, the Indianapolis 500 ran about a 196kmph top speed. It just shows you that Harley is all about racing, freedom and enthusiasm. During the Great Depression, Harley Davidson’s sales fell from 21,000 units in 1929 to 3,700 in 1933. Despite this, Harley Davidson unveiled a new line up for 1934 which included a flat head engine and Art Deco styling. Then in 1937, Joe Petrali benchmarked a land speed record of over 219kmph with a streamlined knuckle head. During World War II, production of civilian motorcycles had almost entirely stopped between 1941 and 1945; the company produced almost 90,000 WLA models for military use, however, returning servicemen seemed to favor the lighter British twins. In response, Harley created the 737.42cc side valve K model. Harley Davidson acquired the design of a small German motorcycle which they adapted, manufactured and sold from 1948 to 1966.

HARLEY DAVIDSON’S FACTORY RACING TEAM WAS WELL KNOWN AS THE WRECKING CREW WHICH CAME FROM THEIR DOMINANCE IN AMERICAN RACING AND IT IS FAMED FOR THE SMOKED PIG WHICH WAS THEIR MASCOT

In the 50s, Indian Motorcycles came to an end which left Harley the only motorcycle manufacturer. And it was in 1957, the iconic Sportster was introduced. In the 60s, Harley Davidson updated the old pan head motor to the new motor under the name of shovel head. This basic engine remained in production for the next 20 years.

THE FALL Harley Davidson was nearly bankrupt in 1969 and AMF, American Machinery Foundry which was a sports and enthusiasm brand bought Harley Davidson. They attempted to maximize profits without focusing on the product and slashed the workforce. Before they even realized it, not only were they a struggling company, but the quality and performance of the bikes sagged and the once proud brand became tarnished. In 1970, Harley motorcycles were nicknamed “Hardly Drive-able”. This was a terrible chapter in the company’s life. Although most Harley fans would rather forget the years in which the company was owned by AMF, there is one AMF bike that is highly sought after by collectors and that is the 1977 XL CR; the CR stands for Café Racer. While the model which is prized now was rejected by Harley customers and only 3100 models were sold and the model was discontinued a year later. The FX S lowrider was also introduced this year.

REVIVAL OF THE HOGS In 1981, after years of AMF mismanagement, a group of company executives led by Vaughn Beals offered to buy the vision for $75 million. AMF quickly agreed and Beals led an amazing corporate turnaround. He funded new product development and implemented world class quality control. It is impossible to know what would have happened to the Harley Davidson brand if Beals had not raised enough to save it. But it’s certain that no one else could have done a better job at rehabilitating it. In 1983, they wanted to put focus on the customers so they started HOG which stands for the Harley’s Owners Group and they adapted the name from the original nickname from the hog that dated back to the time of victory laps. Although, the 80s and 90s saw them stumble, they got back on track. In 1987, Harley Davidson went public which marked the beginning of their comeback. The stock was traded on the NY stock exchange with the ticker symbol of Hog. The company petitioned to the ITC to relax the Tariffs on the imported motorcycles year before it was scheduled to lapse. The move served as a notice that Harley Davidson was capable of competing on a level playing field despite the fact

56

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2018

that the Japanese motorcycle companies then made V twin cruisers that compete directly with Harley Davidson motorcycles. In 1992, Harley Davidson, was the first company to equip its entire model except a handful of its racing models with drive belts. Modern Drive belts provide smoother ride than chains, last longer and free riders from the dreaded chain lubrication routines and adjustments. In 1994, the company enters the AMA superbike championship, fielding the water cooled, VR 1000. AMA rules specified that the Company had to also build and sell 2000 machines for road use. Despite it being ably ridden by the top riders of that time, the VR 1000 never won an AMA race.

MODERN DAY HARLEY DAVIDSON Despite spending a huge sum in legal fees and having initial success in its efforts to trademark the signature note of Harley motorcycles, they dropped their patent application at the beginning of the 21st century. Harley Davidson’s Vice President of marketing, Joanne Bischmann told reporters, “I’ve personally spoken with Harley Davidson owners from around the world and they’ve told me that there is nothing like the sound of a Harley Davidson motorcycles. If our customers know the sound cannot be imitated, that’s good enough for me and for Harley Davidson.” Now we see Harley motorcycles as the iconic brand that it is. After going through its fair share of ups and downs, Harley Davidson is a company that has withstood the testament of time and whether we know it or not, it’s one motorcycle company no one can ignore. Even in 2003, the special edition Ford F 150 pickup branded with Harley Davidson was launched by Ford for its 100th anniversary and shook the world with the odd debut. It came with all the chrome, Harley logos and color; basically it was Harley Davidson version of the F 150. And in 2008, the Harley Davidson opened its impressive new museum in time for their 105th anniversary. Later the same year, it introduced the XR 1200 inspired by XR 750 Trek machine used to win countless championships. Even in this day and age, we see a company that continues to cater to its customer with innovation and creativity. Perhaps this is why we see so many people that ohhs at the sight of a Harley and why it’s got the following that it has. One thing’s for sure: Harley Davidson motorcycles are awesome. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2018

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Miss Subi Manandhar is a certified makeup artist and a Fashion Designer. She is currently studying fashion retailing and merchandising. She has been into automobiles from a very young age, in fact at the age of 24 she already has 10 years of riding experience. Her father and brother sharing the same passion as her further enhanced her interest in automobiles. Miss Subi has a very outstanding list of vehicles parked in her garage and most men will definitely be jealous of her collection. So we talked with Miss Subi about her interests and how it all began.

HOW MUCH OF AN AUTO ENTHUSIAST ARE YOU?

Talking about enthusiasm, I’m very obsessed with automobiles. It all started since I was little because of my dad and elder brother. Moreover, I was influenced by my elder brother who’s a motor head; they always encouraged me to do adventurous stuffs like “Kta le garnu sakne activities” in typical term used by our society. And I always felt like if my brother can do it then I can do it too. A girl riding a bike is still kind of rare and some people do not even allow their daughters/sister to ride bikes, but they never stopped believing in me. So, would say I inherited their ways including how they keep their vehicles well maintained.

PREVIOUSLY, HOW MANY VEHICLES HAVE YOU OWNED AND WHAT VEHICLES ARE CURRENTLY PARKED IN YOUR GARAGE?

I don’t exactly remember the number but yes, we had a lot. We used to buy different models as part of our thrill and later we used to sell it. On the other hand, keeping many motors would be very difficult as well. Currently, Honda CBR 600 RR, Honda CD 125, Honda Steed 400, Honda XL 185, Suzuki GN 250, Suzuki GN 125, Yamaha DT 100 Enduro, Toyota MR2 Supercharger and Hyundai i10 are parked in my garage.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH DRIVING/RIDING?

Well, the first encounter with riding is something that I hold very close to my heart and due to which I’m here. As I already mentioned, my brother taught me to ride a bike. One day he casually asked me to go on a ride with him. He said, when you can ride a scooter you can definitely ride a bike too, it’s only about

balancing and the gears. He sat on the back and instructed about the clutch and everything. I did it and the chills I got deep down my veins are still fresh in my thoughts. Basically, he encouraged me that day out of nowhere but till now I feel if he tells me anything I can do it.

DO YOU PREFER DRIVING BY YOURSELF OR DO YOU HAVE A DRIVER?

I do have a driver but I always prefer driving/riding by myself because I am somewhat of a control freak and I don’t trust anyone’s driving unless it’s my dad, brother or someone who’s very experienced at driving. It really feels weird when you know how to drive. Well I do have trust issues but I have never been a passenger in anyone’s vehicle till date except my dad and my brother.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF OWNING A PREMIUM SET OF WHEELS?

This is a fun question. The pros of owning a premium wheels maintains my unique personality even in the crowded traffic. It gives me a cool look and when people see me riding those wheels and being a girl leaves their mouth open.

And yes, where there are pros there are cons as well. They are very expensive and hard to take care of and there are always insecurities when I have to park in public places; getting scratched or damages can be very hurtful. And in general people acknowledge me from my helmet and bikes so they poke me through social media. You never know who you inspire and being a girl and being a badass there’s nothing wrong with that.

TILL DATE, ON WHICH CAR HAVE YOU HAD THE BEST EXPERIENCE DRIVING?

It would definitely be Toyota MR2 Super Charger because I’m a very big fan of vintage motors and speed.

60

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2018

IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE, WHICH CAR OR BIKE WOULD YOU WANT TO OWN AS A DREAM CAR AND BIKE?

If I had to choose a car then it would be Peugeot Rcz R. I don’t know why it feels so tempting like it’s only made for me and matches my personality. But being practical for Nepal’s road, I would love to own a Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6x6 as my dream car and my dream bike would be Kawasaki Ninja H2.

WHAT IS ONE OF THE CRAZIEST THINGS THAT YOU HAVE DONE BEHIND A STEERING WHEEL?

Umm, I don’t remember doing any crazy thing behind the wheels but that doesn’t mean I don’t have fun. I’m very old school so I tend to follow rules and stay in rules consequently, I don’t do any crazy stuffs behind the wheels.

WHERE DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST DESTINATION TO DRIVE/RIDE IN NEPAL

I have only been to few places outside valley so I don’t have much experience about it but yes I think “Sinduli Highway” is the best destination for me.

IF YOU WERE GIVEN COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE COUNTRY, WHAT CHANGES WOULD YOU BRING ABOUT IN THE AUTOMOTIVE SCENE?

There are a lot of things I would like to change if I had the authority: 1) Firstly i would construct the roads as per the tax we pay 2) Make tunnels where it’s necessary like the road in abroad 3) Make the traffic rules more strict where people should also follow the rules 4) Keep speed limits in highways 5) Make a rule where each person has limited vehicle 6) As per the government’s rule we have to pay double tax for 20 years old vehicles of which I would lessen the tax. 7) Lastly, give priority to vintage vehicle which is in condition and scrap the vehicles which throws smoke.

STEPS TO TAKE AFTER AN ACCIDENT Contributed by Ashish Sinha, Founder at Iron Monk Works: In addition to being an avid motorcyclist, moto-journalist and track enthusiast, he also holds a degree in Marketing and Public Relations. He aims to bring exciting content to our readers issue after issue.

I

was recently driving home after a long day at work. Navigating the chaotic streets of Kathmandu, I made my way up the freshly marked lanes of Maharajgunj when a motorcycle attempted to pass my vehicle; frustratingly, from the left of course. The problem was that there was a 2 ton city bus parked in his way, and as the law of physics states, “no two identical fermions can occupy the same quantum state simultaneously”. The motorcycle clipped the rear right corner of the bus, smashing the bus’s tail light and a few fingers of the motorcycle riders left hand in the process. To my

STOP AT A SAFE LOCATION

While you might be upset that your vehicle has that brand-new scratch after someone hits you from behind, the middle of the road is no place to stop your vehicle and handle the situation. Make verbal contact with others that are involved in the accident and politely ask them to pull off to the side of the road, so the rest of the road users can move safely along.

ASK FOR POLICE ASSISTANCE

No matter how big or small the accident

with your insurance claim if any further actions need to be taken.

TAKE PICTURES- LOTS OF THEM!!!

While you and the police officer are now both witnesses to the incident, its important to take pictures of the scene and the damages to your vehicles as certain details might get skipped when filing an official accident report. Also, pictures don’t lie about the extent of damage that the other party might feel the need to exaggerate on later when they’re pushing for a payout for the damages either from you or your insurance company.

SEEK MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

Often, injuries don’t present themselves until a few hours or even a few days after the incident. While we are happy we survived the crash and like to believe we are invincible, there could be internal or spinal injuries that can be potentially life-threatening if not addressed by trained medial staff. Please make sure you seek assistance immediately after the accident if you have any doubts about whether you’re just dazed from the incident, or that dizziness is from hitting your head on the pavement. surprise, the motorcyclist decided not to stop and used his adrenaline to fuel his getaway from the scene. I will spare you the details of the entire scenario and the unfortunate events that followed. However, the incident had me wondering if our readers have any idea as to what to do after an accident, regardless of how minor of an incident it might be. The following are merely my own recommendations of the actions that should be taken after an accident.

might be, the involved parties usually tend to get into a pretty heated argument placing fault on each other for the damages. The police are trained to mediate and handle situations when emotions are flying high. Furthermore, the involvement of the police makes it less likely for the other party to try and intimidate you into paying up on the spot without a proper investigation. Most importantly, now you have an official authority figure who is witness to the case and will help

SERIOUS OR FATAL ACCIDENT

Unfortunately, with the state of our roads (refer to the August issue), the improper maintenance of vehicles, and the inability of most road-users to follow basic driving laws, we are bound to come across a serious accident where individuals might have been seriously injured or even cases of fatalities. So, what are the steps to be taken to properly address the situation should you find yourself in such a critical scenario? facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

NEVER MOVE A SERIOUSLY INJURED PERSON

This is something we always see in videos and pictures that are shared after a major incident. The injured are being dragged across the street and thrown into a taxi in an attempt to rush to the hospital or nearby clinic. While our government and crippling economy struggles to provide basic aid in the form of fire trucks and ambulances that can arrive at the scene of an accident in a moment’s notice, this is an attempted act of kindness from those that want to help. However, oftentimes this causes more injuries to the person than what they sustained during the accident. In short, all other options should be exhausted before moving the injured, especially with spinal, neck or head injuries.

COLLECT INFORMATION

Its important to collect all the details, even more so when there might be serious injuries to individuals. This will help the police and investigating authorities perform their investigation with more accuracy and hold the individuals at fault accountable. Some of the major details that can be complied are: • Date and Time of the Accident • Address of the accident, or approximate address and the nearest cross street • The direction the vehicles were traveling • Take photos from a few angles or sketch a diagram of the crash scene • What happened (As soon as you can write out your account of what happened, or use your mobile phone to record yourself telling all the details for your own records. It’s easy to forget the details when you are all shook up from a crash, so recording you talking about it might help). • Any notes regarding the driving conditions, the weather, visibility • Any witnesses names and contact information • The name, badge number, and contact information for any police officer who comes to the accident

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

VEHICLES WITH MAJOR DAMAGE

Now that the vehicle has been involved in a major accident, we often decide to spend lakhs fixing vehicles to make it appear accident-free and sell it off to another party in the future. This is not only unethical but may also cause another major accident in the future if the repairs have not been performed appropriately to resolve all the issues in the vehicle and make it 100% safe for use in the future. It is unfortunate that we live in a society where it takes hours for fire response teams and medical personnel to reach the scene of an accident. However we have folks such as Michael Kobold who are actively trying the better this situation with programs like the Firetruck Expedition which aims to tackle the efficiency and response time that will significantly improve how accidents scenes are handled. But regardless of how much assistance and funding is brought in, it is truly us- everyday road users to be aware of what to do after an accident.

It is unfortunate that we live in a society where it takes hours for fire response teams and medical personnel to reach the scene of an accident

HONDA HORNET 160 160R WORDS AND PHOTOS: AL TEAM

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2018

W

hat is the definition of a hero? What separates a hero from a flock of ordinary? As the saying goes, “heroes are not born but forged”, Honda, one of the most reputed and respectable motorcycle manufacturing company forged a motorcycle which is deemed worthy of this title, the Honda CB Hornet 160R back in 2016. The muscular and chiseled tank, compact & strong body, sharp and sporty design which is further solidified by the spectacular badge of wings that’s been slapped on, the Hornet appears to be no less like the superheroes of our generation which is why, this was the most awaited motorcycle in its segment and took the market by storm when it was first introduced. Fast-forward to 2018, Honda have introduced the updated version of this iconic motorcycle. Of course, the looks are overwhelming; this one looked much more modern with its led headlights and sporty graphic stickers; not to forget this one gets ABS. Looks is not the only reason why we are regarding this bike as the everyday working-class hero, to find out exactly why, keep reading.

DESIGN AND FEATURES

To start off, Honda has offered many color options with the new sportier Hornet, five to be exact; striking green, mars orange, athletic blue metallic, sports red and dazzle yellow metallic. Each color combination is equally better than the next one. Since, it has been a long time that Honda hasn’t introduced any of its motorcycles in yellow until now, so we decided to take that one for a spin. The sharp and edgy sticker goes pretty well with the muscular frame of the tank. Besides the LED headlights and the sticker job, there aren’t distinctive major changes on the design of the motorcycle. However, Honda has put a lot of effort on the minimal changes and tiny details on the motorcycle which can only be noticed when you ride it. For instance, the tiny yet useful windshield at the top of the head unit which works well when you tuck your head close to the tank in an aggressive racing body posture, giving you a clear vision along with good aerodynamics. What’s new is the instrument cluster which is better than the previous one as the speedometer and indicators have been clearly divided by silver finished housings and carries a Hornet badge on it. Unlike many motorcycles in its segments, the new hornet comes with a hazard switch. This may be a minimal option but comes handy in situations such as highway riding, heavy rain or foggy days.

HONDA HORNET 160

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE

Just like the previous Hornet, this one gets the same 162.71cc, four-stroke, air-cooled, SI BS-IV engine which churns out 14.9 bhp at 8500rpm and 14.5 Nm torque at 6500 rpm. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox which we find adequate for a single cylinder 160cc segment motorcycle. Everything is similar in terms of engine and there hasn’t been many changes as compared to its predecessor. However, there is a reason why Honda did not interfere with the engine as the engine on the Hornet is a master piece in its own way. The engine gets the refinement and smoothness of a Honda which gives you constant and linear power delivery on every twist of the throttle. But, in our opinion, the main reason behind Honda sticking with the same engine for the Hornet would be the impressive mileage it offers while delivering amazing performance. For our test ride we decided to put it up against smooth black topped roads and the patchy pothole filled off road streets of Nepal. And we must say the motorcycle performed pretty well on both kind of roads. The bike took the rash off-roads and the harsh pothole bash pretty well to be honest. There were many moments when the gritty roads almost felt like smooth asphalt which would not have been possible without the sturdy stiffly sprung suspensions and the wide section rear tyres on this bike. But take it to a smooth paved road and you will have a wide grin on your face. The big contact patch of the tyres compounded by the wide handle bars and sculpted tank gives you that extra edge of a smooth and confident ride.

BRAKING AND SUSPENSION

While the Hornet comes in many variants, the top variant having ABS and CBS with disc brakes at front and back and the minimal variant consisting of just a disc at the front, we went ahead with the minimal one just to see how well it performs. This variant comes with a 276 mm disc at the front and 130 mm drum at the rear. Despite of the old school drum brake at the rear, the braking on bike was pretty well rounded even at high speeds because of the proper weight distribution. The front disc brake has a pretty good bite which is enough to handle any emergency stopping.

66

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2018

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

THE ENGINE GETS THE REFINEMENT AND SMOOTHNESS OF A HONDA WHICH GIVES YOU CONSTANT AND LINEAR POWER DELIVERY ON EVERY TWIST OF THE THROTTLE

As for the suspensions, you get telescopic forks at the front and a mono shock absorber at the rear. Both the suspensions work effortlessly to offer a smooth and pleasant ride on any kind of terrain. The sturdy rear suspension handled bumps on the road ensuring ride stability and even in tight corners, the suspensions remained very responsive.

COMFORT AND HANDLING

Just from the way it looks you can tell it already that the bike is a saddle of comfort. The wide handle bars, comfortable seats and upright positioning provide you with nothing but a delightful ride. This is essential for a long highway ride as well as for everyday commute. However, the interesting thing is the sports capabilities the bike offers you with. Shift a little bit back towards the end of the rider’s seat and you will find yourself in an aggressive riding position for a sportier ride. All in all, a perfect commuter and fun bike to own for everyday ride.

VERDICT

The engine is one of the best in its segment; refined and powerful yet fuel efficient. The big disc and the Nissin calipers truly live up to its name with a powerful bite. The chunky tires promise stability and grip around corners and the riding position is both comfortable and sporty with the design being sharp and elegant. All of these qualities packed in a single bike at a reasonable price is the reason why we titled this machine as an everyday working-class hero. It is realistic and will be there with you on every step. Isn’t that what a basic element of any hero is? facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

OWNER’S REVIEW

It’s been almost 3 months since I bought TATA Tiago. Since this is my first car, I did a lot of research on websites and so far, every review pointed Tiago to be the best car in its segment. The Tiago is a very good-looking car in the hatchback segment and I really admire the interior that TATA has put into this car. The exterior and body build is fit for everyday commute inside the city and the engine has adequate power with good mileage and fuel capacity. I haven’t been to a long drive with this car but I have been to many places around the valley such as Nala and Godawari. The car is comfortable to drive on any kinds of road and I had no hassle going uphill as well. The steering feels smooth and it makes the car easy to drive inside alleys and dense traffic. Also, because of good ground clearance, I haven’t had the need to worry about any bumps and potholes on the road. One of the main reasons why I bought the Tiago is because of the brand, TATA. I believe that TATA has made a name for itself and that is why their vehicles have good resale values. All in all, I am very happy about buying a TATA. The people at TATA are very frank and helpful. I keep getting calls every now and then from TATA asking me about how the car is doing. I have been really satisfied with the services that they have provided me with. I have referred this car to many people who ask for my advice and the ones who have actually bought the Tiago are very happy about owning this car as well.

AUTOLIFE FEATURE

TO DO OR NOT TO DO?

WORDS: ANKIT R. TUL ADHAR

T

here are a lot of things that we might be neglecting while riding/driving around in our vehicles; this can not only put your life in danger but also the lives of other people in your proximity. Be it your carelessness or the fact that you do not know what to do at such situations, you can get into a sticky situation very quickly. When we have a clear view on what we should do and what we shouldn’t do is when things will start going right. So, in this article, we point out somethings that you should do and other things that you should not do while riding/driving a vehicle. FIRST, LET US TALK ABOUT THE POSITIVE STUFFS AND WHAT WE SHOULD BE DOING.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR VEHICLE

You must be able to understand how your vehicle operates, what kind of sound it makes and what are the main components that are prone to getting damaged. By doing this, you will immediately notice if there is any kind of problem with your vehicle or if a problem is going to show up soon.

70

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2018

MOTORCYCLE/CAR MAINTENANCE

When you have an understanding of your vehicle, you will have a clearer view on the importance of motorcycle/car maintenance as you will have a better idea of your vehicle. So, when there is a problem with your vehicle, there is a chance that you will know where it came from and have the chance to fix it yourself rather than getting stuck at someplace helplessly.

TREAT YOUR VEHICLE RIGHT

Do not treat your vehicle just as a means of transport, treat it with love and care so that it will treat you back in the same way. By this what we are trying to say is that you should take a little extra time warming up your vehicle in the morning before heading out and make small inspection while you’re at it. This will lead to a prolonged life of your vehicle, while if you don’t treat you vehicle right, redline it as soon as you start it and handle it very roughly then there is no saying when it will die on you.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

KNOW THE RULES

Now a days the traffic police have become quite strict about the rules and regulations of the roads, so knowing the rules properly will aid in avoiding any sort of trouble with the traffic officers. Make sure to follow the lanes, check your mirrors and give signals while making a move. Following the rules strictly also decreases the chances of accidents by quite a bit. NOW WE SHALL PONDER UPON WHAT WE SHOULD NOT DO TO AND ON OUR VEHICLES.

DON’T PROCRASTINATE

Procrastination is one of our favorite habits, we tend to procrastinate everything we do. While somethings might not have a diverse effect when you procrastinate, procrastinating on your vehicle’s timely maintenance can be really harmful. The damage that has been done to the vehicle might affect other parts too and that can lead to a chain reaction leading in a very expensive maintenance bill at the end of all this.

DON’T TURN INTO A ROAD RACER

Life isn’t a Need for Speed game. Just because someone over took you or tempted you to race does not mean that you have to comply with that and start a street race. Driving/riding fast and in a rash manner in such congested traffic and pot holes laden roads is a very risky thing. You never know when a vehicle, person, animal or a pot hole will show up to surprise you. This can not only harm you but it can also harm the passenger travelling with you, or a total random stranger who was just minding their own business.

DON’T GO CRAZY WITH MODIFICATIONS

By the law of our country we are not allowed to modify our vehicles, so we have to keep that in mind but there are a few meaningful modifications that are good for your vehicle like crash protection, better tires (By better tires I mean tires that are meant for the bike and match the technical specifications laid out by the manufacturer.) etc. these modifications are meaningful but modifications that can hamper your riding ability or other should be avoided such as very bright neon lights, changing the dynamics of the bike, etc.

DON’T BE THE IDIOT ON THE STREET

Like we have mentioned in point number 4 of what we should do, always follow the rules. There are a lot of people on the streets facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

that don’t abide by the rules and put themselves in harm’s way along with others around them. The main fact being not staying in their lane, not looking at the rear view mirror while switching lanes, not indicating their next move with the turn indicators, riding/driving with their high beams on, etc. These behaviors will not only impact them but also the ones that are riding/ driving close to them. If you follow these eight tips not only will your vehicle stay in a better condition but it will keep your body in a better condition too. So, start with the good habits and stop with the bad ones because it is for the betterment of everyone. AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2018 71

AUTOLIFE INDIA LAUNCH

The Grand Launch Event of the All New

HYUNDAI SANTRO

The gracious people over at Hyundai India and Lamxi Intercontinental Pvt. Ltd gave us the opportunity to witness the event and Autolife Nepal is here, live in Delhi and we are more than happy and honored to accept this invitation. Being the generous people that they are, we were accommodated at the Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, Delhi, Saket and the launch event took place at the Hotel Taj Palace in New Delhi. The grand event was nothing less than breath taking, as they were on the process of unveiling the successor to the very famous and loved car, the Hyundai Santro! The Santro was one of the First vehicles to change the Hatchback market back in the days and was well accepted by all. Now, with the new Santro, Hyundai has tried to recreate the same image that was portrayed by its predecessor. After the welcoming speech and

72

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2018

a briefing on Hyundai’s history by the M.D. and CEO at Hyundai Motor India Limited, Mr. Y K Koo, the all new Santro was unveiled. The design introduction was conducted by Sangyup Lee, Head of Hyundai Styling, while the introduction of the Santro was done by Amit Dhaundiyal GM- Product Planning, Hyundai Motor India Limited. It’s interesting to know that the Santro is the first car to be exported by Hyundai motors India to Nepal in 1998 and is the first Hyundai vehicle of India. And after 2 decades of winning the hearts of the public, the new Santro upped its game and gets a better design and looks very smart. The signature cascading grille makes its way into the Santro as well with the fog lamps placed high along the front grille. The headlights and the grille together look like a smiling face. It is powered facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

by a 1.1-liter petrol engine producing 68 bhp @ 5500 RPM and 99 Nm of torque @ 4500 RPM. The mileage is claimed to be 20.3 kmpl according to ARAI testing. It also gets a unique and practically designed air vent which provides superior cooling and that obviously translates to better performance. With that being said, there are 7 colors available for the new Santro. On the interior side of things, the new Santro comes with two tone beige and black finish with the use of elegant champagne gold. There are also neat features such as a 7-inch infotainment system which supports Apple car play and Android Auto, which is a segment first. Another first in the segment feature is that it houses a voice recognition system and it comes along with the Hyundai iblue smart app. Other than that, the Santro also gets Rear AC vents, which adds to the comfort of the rear seat passengers. The space has been increased from before to provide more leg room and headroom for the occupants. Being placed between the Eon and Grand I10 means it will take on vehicles such as the Renault Kwid 1.0, Suzuki Celerio, Tata Tiago, etc. The Santro looks to bring a tough fight to its competitors. Nevertheless, we would also like to thank Laxmi Intercontinental Pvt. Ltd., sole authorized dealer of Hyundai motors in Nepal and Hyundai India for giving us the opportunity to attend and witness the launching of the marvellous and new Hyundai Santro.

AUTOLIFE GEARS

THE ESSENTIALS FOR THE RIDERS’ SAKE

Riding BOOTS Gears: COMPILED BY: PRASHANT MANANDHAR

Hello and welcome back to our 6th edition of the Riding Gears series: The Essentials for The Rider’s Sake. If you haven’t been following our previous issues of Autolife, then this is the segment where we talk about proper riding gears and why people need to invest in them for the safety that they provide. Back in our first installment of the riding gears series, we had talked about the essential riding gears and touched base on the 5 most basic gears; i.e. helmets, riding jackets, gloves, riding pants and boots. We talked about how people have always been investing so much on motorcycles but haven’t given a thought about riding gears to protect themselves from harm’s way. But sadly, many just presume that a helmet is enough to protect them and think of purchasing other gears as an added expense. However, with this series we have been trying to change the misconception and want our readers to understand that the investments made on riding gears is not an added expense, rather it will save you from a lot of expenses later on if you get into an accident. Well, having an arsenal of riding gears is awesome and will definitely save you from a lot of hassles of medical treatments. We can see a lot of people opting for motorcycles as an easy means of transportation, especially with the massive traffic in Nepal. But for some riders, it’s not just a means of commuting but they have been relishing on the freedom of riding a motorcycle and enjoy the thrill of riding. However, as we have been saying it in our previous issues, being a two-wheeler, motorcycles do have some risks involved in it as it does not provide the structural protection that a car or any other four-wheeler would. A car would keep the driver from harm’s way but sadly that’s not the case with motorcycles. Thus, having riding gears is a necessity to keep the rider safe in case of an accident. In our previous issues, we have already talked about helmets, gloves, jackets and pants in detail; giving information about why these are important and how it protects the rider. This time around we will be looking into one of the most

74

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2018

debatable gears, motorcycle boots. Most of the time, many riders overlook the need to wear motorcycle boots and keep their ankles and feet completely unprotected. But if you think about it, your ankles and feet are one the most vulnerable parts of your body while riding a motorcycle. Motorcycle boots are more important than most riders realize. Ankles are some of the most delicate joints on your body and can break easily under heavy load and tension. So as to protect them, these boots are specially designed to keep the impact during accident as low as possible. Riding boots come with added protection around the ankle area and full-length boots come to the

rider’s shin and offer optimum protection with shin guards. Motorcycle boots are generally made from a thick, heavy leather and may include energy absorbing and load spreading padding, metal, plastic and/or composite materials to protect the rider’s feet, ankles and legs in case of an accident. Also, some boots come with waterproof membrane lining so that you can still keep riding and protect your ankles during the rainy monsoons. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

So, why wear motorcycle boots anyway? For most instances, many people don’t realize that during a motorcycle accident, most of the injuries affect the foot and leg. In a collision or skid, the first thing you do is keep your foot down, and with no proper boots, there would be no grip leading to injury. Apart from that, if you think about it, motorcycles are pretty heavy machines and whenever you are at a stop you balance it with a foot or both of them. Suppose that you are only wearing slippers and then you step on one those pesky potholes; which the Nepalese roads are pretty much infested with; and you lose your balance, fall down and the whole weight of the motorcycle is weighing down on your ankles and the before you even know it, you would have already broken that delicate joint of yours. To make easier for all of you reading this, we’ve made it easier by pointing out some of the main reasons to be wearing protective footwear. So, let’s move on to the pointers.

IMPACT AND OPEN WOUND PROTECTION

While riding a motorcycle, your feet are exposed and that leaves them vulnerable to instances that a vehicle, including your own, might rollover your feet and crush your bones. To prevent this, it is recommended to wear shoes/boots that are reinforced – typically with hard plastic components. Not only do protective riding boots protect you from such mishaps, they even significantly reduce the chance of suffering from injuries from a crash.

FULL ANKLE AND FOOT SUPPORT

As mentioned earlier, not only do you need to balance yourself but an average 150 kg motorcycle with your legs during a stop. So, you need adequate ankle support to allow you to do this safely. Also, in case of an accident, your feet are subject to getting twisted radically and you might just end up with a twisted or broken ankle. However, motorcycle boots are designed to be sturdy with protective fittings on them to prevent your ankles from contouring a lot.

OFFERS GOOD TRACTION

As a natural instinct, when you find yourself losing control of your motorcycle, the general tendency of most riders is to put the feet down to stabilize. To do this successfully, you need have a good pair of footwear with good grips. Well, as you might have figured out, riding boots are well equipped to do so as well.

WEATHER PROOF

As mentioned previously, your feet are usually exposed when riding a motorcycle, and this means that they are exposed to the varying weather elements. You wouldn’t want to be riding with cold feet or with soaked up wet feet as well. This would mean that you would be stripping yourself from a well-rounded ride experience and this could even hamper with shifting gears and controlling the rear brake. Most motorcycle boots come with weather protection such as warm inner linings and waterproof membrane linings.

THE NECESSITY TO LOOK LIKE A BADASS

Lets face it, nobody wants to be a squid and look stupid on a motorcycle. Motorcycles have always been something that gives out a badass vibe. Well, riding gears do the same as well. Style is a very important aspect of a motorcycle rider’s get-up. Nothing compliments a rugged leather jacket like some heavy-duty riding boots. And nothing goes better with a fashionable AlpineStars riding outfit than some slick racing shoes to go with them.

Johnny English Reborn is a 2011 British spy action comedy film which is the sequel to Johnny English (2003). It stars comedy legend, Rowan Atkinson reprising his role as the title character. Like its predecessor, the film parodies traits from the James Bond film series and clichés of the spy genre. But of course, we’re recommending this movie because of the car that Johnny English drives in this movie because it’s a RollsRoyce Phantom Coupé which comes with an experimental 9.0-liter V16 engine! There are only a few of these engines in existence which were produced during tests for the Phantom Coupé, and they were not used in production models. For the production of the film, Atkinson approached the company and requested that they install one into a car, making the vehicle seen in the film unique and it definitely is a treat to witness. A sequel to the film, Johnny English Strikes Again is set to release in October 2018 and there we get to see Johnny in the Aston Martin V8!

K&N PERFORMANCE AIR FILTERS

MOTORHEAD’S JUKEBOX:

FM-84: ATLAS AND RICE WINE: FLOOD FOR THE NIGHT

FM-84: ATLAS Somehow the nostalgia of the 80’s synthpop fits right in with the night time. We like to think that it’s the idea of having city lights illuminate the road as you dive by, making the whole scene look futuristic. Carrying the same idea is FM-84’s album Atlas. Full of great synth sounds that make you feel like Miami Vice, it’s just great to drive home at night, or anywhere for that matter. OUR FAV TRACKS: Everything, Running in the Night, Let’s Talk FOR CHILLING OUT

RICE WINE: FLOOD Like the title of the album, it’s a flood of feel-good emotions that just screams the thought of cool air gushing through the sun roof. With minimalistic vocals you don’t need to remember, just hum to, and lo-fi beats, it has some great tracks perfect for a lazy drive to clear the head. So put this on and let the sun roof ruin your hair, it’s all worth it. OUR FAV TRACKS: Hello Good Morning, Today, Bye Goodnight

VIRTUAL SIMULATOR:

RIDE 3

If you’re finding yourself face to face with a 5-digit full system exhaust upgrade, save yourself the trouble and get yourself a performance air filter and the one we’re particularly going to be talking about is the brand K&N. If you haven’t heard of K&N before, they’re best known for their performance and high air flow filters. They’ve become immensely popular amongst auto enthusiasts as they provide customengineered tubes which deliver better airflow than the air filters you get with your vehicle’s stock setup. The basic science behind air filters is the more air means better performance. They contain even more products like K&N’s line of washable replacement cabin air filters which are designed to filter incoming air using innovative filtration technology protecting the vehicle’s occupants, interior, and HVAC system from pollutants. On top of that, they’re a relatively affordable investment and you can easily fit in one which is all the more reason why you should consider fitting one into your machines.

Ride 3 is not just another motorcycle racing game but it’s more like a realistic simulation. Right from the get go, you have more than 230 bikes at your disposal consisting many of the different motorcycle genres. The game also lets you customize them to your liking both in terms of performance and aesthetics. But what really makes Ride 3 THE motorcycle game is its realistic graphics and audio. With an almost realistic motion animation and on-point audio of the exhaust note, you’ll be familiar with all the bikes from the real world in no time. The game is perhaps the most complete digital Motorbike Encyclopedia as it not only contains a wide variety of motorcycles in its catalogue but also 30 tracks all around the world which was created from scratch and reproduced using photogrammetric technology and drone-scanning of both historical and contemporary! So unlock, collect and access new challenges, get a unique, volumebased Single Player experience where each volume tells the story of a specific bike category, manufacturers’ history or iconic track. 80
