The biggest news in the automotive world this month has to do with the fuel efficiency testing regime at Mitsubishi. Though it looks like the problem is largely confined to cars that were sold in the Japan Domestic Market, there is a likelihood that the brand may fall afoul of regulators in other domains, as the scope and scale of the problem seems to grow with the passage of time. There has been an immediate fallout in the share price of the company and no one really knows what awaits the brand going ahead – particularly in relation to the scale of penalties that may await it. At the same time, the saga around the Volkswagen dieselgate scandal hasn’t gone away. In news from the United States this month, there seems to be a judicial backing to VW’s composite plan of buying back or reprogramming most of the half million cars affected by the issue. This could potentially have ramifications that could spread – like whether customers in Europe would be offered a similar deal or indeed whether the company would have to buy the cars and also pay the hefty fine per car. It has been a tough year for the brand, with its woes weighing down on the larger group’s rather good performance, in the process even affecting the balance sheet of the Porsche holding company. We are back again at the meeting of two trends in the market, at least locally in Oman and the region. On the one hand we have an economic ambience that is seeing downward pressure on volumes, a more challenged financing market and a large degree of job worries. On the other – car manufacturers are coming into the market with a whole new crop of models, upgrades and technology shifts that would normally have been lapped up in a buoyant marketplace. The challenge is to find that unique appeal or selling proposition that will get a customer to make the purchase. After all, it is the norm in tough times to put off a car purchase choice, especially if you already drive a serviceable motor. However, it isn’t all doom and gloom. While volumes are down on a year on year basis, it hasn’t translated into a proportionate reduction. Some brands are managing to keep a better control on the dip in numbers, while a few have actually achieved marginal growth. The name of the game is to make the most out of the existing market, while reducing costs from avoidable choices. Could we say that the customer (who is still ready to buy this year) has a field day? While prices don’t seem to be coming down, the range of value additions are rising, with some marketing campaigns almost resounding of a very ‘Dubai’ flavour. The idea is to entice the customer into the showroom and with a bouquet of add-ons and cash back on top of that to get him or her to sign on the dotted line. The coming Ramadan season will no doubt be very interesting if the car sellers in town manage to top these current offers.

Automan is now in its 16th year of publication. Expect a great deal from us through the year in terms of all your favourite automotive content

NEWWHEELS 2016 Porsche 718 Boxster and 911

6

MAY 2016

Porsche used Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina track as a base to highlight the features of the new 718 Boxster and the new 911, allowing invitees to drive these cars on track and around Abu Dhabi. So how does the Boxster feel with its new 4-cylinder engines? And is the 911 worth the wait? Read on.

W

hen the master of the rearengined sports car sends an invite to drive one of their latest releases, you would make the time for it. So, it was with a great of alacrity that we accepted Porsche’s invite to participate in a couple of days driving two of their latest cars – the 718 Boxster and the new 911. During the launch event, Deesch Papke, Chief Executive Officer of Porsche Middle East and Africa FZE, commented: “We are proud to showcase two benchmark models that usher in a new era of Porsche sports cars. The 911 has won more races than any other model, whilst seamlessly balancing exceptional utility. It embodies the sports car genes that have defined all Porsche models for over 50 years. The latest version is the most evolved to date. “Meanwhile, 20 years on from its first introduction, our new roadster also merges tradition with performance innovations. The 718 Boxster continues Porsche’s tradition of four-cylinder flat engine models, defined by legendary race

cars of the 1950s and 1960s which won numerous races, including the renowned Targa Florio and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Descending from the original 718 RSK race car, the model is now more powerful, lighter and fuel efficient.” So, while the two cars were unveiled in one of the pitlane garages, the interest levels in the cars were boosted by the subsequent presence of phalanxes of these cars rolling out on the pitlane itself. The assembled journalists were split into two groups, with one lot to drive the 718 Boxster that evening, while the other group took the 911s. The next day’s prelunch session saw us swap over. The Porsche 718 Boxster At the outset the smaller sports car has had a significant change in terms of the powerpacks – the two versions come with either a 2.0-litre regular turbocharged 4-cylinder boxer engine that generates 300hp and 380Nm of torque, or the larger 2.5-litre unit that is equipped with the VTG

(variable turbine geometry) turbocharger whose technology is sourced from the 911 Turbo and offers power output of 350hp and 420Nm of torque. Thus, moving away from the older six-cylinder unit does not seem to have made for a bad case either in the regular Boxster or the Boxster S. Of course the provision of the turbocharging in both versions has made for a huge increase in the torque available in both variants, 100Nm for the smaller engine and 60Nm for the larger. What this does is offer a better takeoff boost and that makes a tangible difference in both versions as the car itself has become marginally lighter, while a whole lot of technological changes in the suspension and control systems then add on to the elegant performance. The styling of the car has been changed so that the 718 Boxster as it is now known is visually distinguished from the older Boxster. These small changes add a lower and edgier nose, open door handles and a better defined air intake ahead of the

rear wheel. Another clear identifier is the addition of the four-point headlight treatment. The soft-top gets a windbreak between the two seats to add to the islanding of the cabin with the roof down. You can feel the air-conditioner and hear the sound system without too much interruption. Of course, the S also gets an option of the Sports Chrono package as well as Porsche’s active suspension using magnetic fluid. The other two major additions are selectable drive mode through a circular steering wheel mounted knob as well as a sport response button in the centre of that, which primes the car for instant race mode for 20 seconds. Handling is extremely good and even as you power up, you hardly notice the turbocharger other than in the spool up whine. The car packs in a kick while offering superb braking. The PDK equipped versions of the car also get engine stop/start to increase the efficiency it delivers. 911 Carrera and Cabrio The bigger of the two cars has its own share of excitement as it comes into the next iteration. It is seen as the further development of the 991 platform and it 8

MAY 2016

takes all the strengths of the car from the previous year. There are some critical styling changes, with a move towards making the car look wider than before, as well as to the use of the four-point headlight treatment. The cabrio also looks more ensconced in a cocoon with the wraparound the rear seats. The engine options on the Carrera and Carrera S are the 3.0-litre 6-cylinder unit with varying degrees of turbocharging. The regular Carrera gets an output of 370hp with torque of 450Nm, while the S has 420hp and 500Nm of torque. Of course, we were also told about the 911 Turbo which is a 3.8-litre six-cylinder that also features the biturbo arrangement of the smaller two engines while delivering 540hp of power and a very different panel treatment above the engine bay. The 911 Carrera S also gets the option of rear-axle active steering that makes for a much more agile and responsive package, especially when the Carrera S also gets the full advantage of the drive modes, active suspension control and the added ability to almost turn off the car’s active stability control. The Cabrio’s roof mechanism also seems to have been cleaned up and made exceedingly smooth, we love the way

the rigid panels come together under the flexible outer skin. Similar to the 718 Boxster, the 911 too gets a whole new generation of PCM and makes for seamless integration with iPhones as well as a whole new generation of operating system that meshes in Navigation improvements along with better camera and sound. However, it is in terms of performance that the new 911 really excels. The extra power and torque available on the Carrera S is well matched with the rear-axle steering, stability management with a sport mode, PDCC and a lower chassis (10mm lower than before). The new steering wheel inspired by the 918 Spyder also gets the mode knob that the 718 has – specifically offering drive mode choices between Normal, Sport, Sport+ and individual. The performance figures for the 911 for the 0-100km/h sprint ranges from 4.2 seconds on the regular biturbo, to the 3.9 seconds of the S and further to the 3.0 seconds of the 540hp Turbo. Verdict While the track events were designed to bring out the handling characteristics of both the 718 Boxster and 911, it was

really the stomping ground for the higher powered versions of each, especially as the sport mode of stability management coupled with the sport mode button does bring a huge degree instant oomph to the cars. The rear-axle steering of the 911 Carrera s is brilliant and has made a very

effective migration from the GT3 territory to the more popular cars. The 718 Boxster is a definite move away from being a mini-911 to developing a distinct identity of its own – one that still keeps performance at the heart of the equation.

The 911 on the other hand brings a new technology package to the blistering performance you would anyway expect of the breed. It sits well away from other contenders in terms of identity but still manages to be the single most interesting marque on the block. MAY 2016

NEWWHEELS 2016 Honda Civic

T

he single underlying message behind the Honda Civic launch this time was an expectation that the car would bring back the charisma of its predecessor from a decade ago. Honda’s regional management and assembled journalists seemed to be equally expectant as the covers came off the new Honda Civic and the black grilled RS version sitting on the stage did not disappoint. 10

MAY 2016

So what has changed in the car? The first change is that the platform has been enlarged, while the roofline of the car seems to have been sculpted out to accommodate taller occupants of the second seat. In fact Honda’s assertion that the car was closer to the D-segment in interior room is well placed. The rear bench has been poured into the rear of the car, curving around at the edges

and the extra millimetres available on the wheelbase has added into the extra legroom available. With a reasonably short driver ahead, the gap between rear of that seat and the front edge of the second row is almost limousine-like. In terms of styling the change is quite dramatic, with a far more aggressive sculpting around the fascia as well as a broader treatment of the rear deck.

The latest generation of the Honda Civic was launched in the region with a regional media drive event following on from the launch in a five star hotel. The latest Civic is designed to address all the criticism levelled at its precursor. Now, a mixture of a sweeping coupé-like profile, excellent proportions, new styling and class-leading interiors offers a Civic that brings the spirit of the 2006 model right back. Automan attended the event and drive – we bring you our first impressions of the car.

Additionally the headlamps and taillights get an LED treatment, with the RS also getting elegant 17” 5-spoke wheels and rear spoiler alongwith paddle shifters inside the cabin. Engine choices have changed along with the move to a 7-speed CVT transmission. The base engine across the LXi and EXi is the 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine with an output of 158hp @ 6500rpm (with a cut-off at

around 6,800rpm) and 187Nm of torque at 4,200rpm. the higher specced engine that comes on the RS is actually the smaller volume 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that offers 180hp at 6,000rpm and a higher torque of 220Nm along the band of 1700 to 5500rpm. The difference in torque is very evident and meshes well with the 7-notch CVT to the level that it really lives up to the RS tag in its appeal to a younger owner. The next bit of kit that has changed is the entire IP and centre console that is dominated by Honda’s new Android based tablet display that pairs quite effectively with either IPhone or Android phone for a pretty good smart phone interface. The drive out to Fujairah was dominated by long spells on the highway and a staggered roster that saw every participant get time in an EXi or RS as driver and passenger as well as in the reference vehicles – a Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra. To be fair, the Corolla was not the top of the line and the Elantra was the previous generation car, not the 2016 model. However, what this comparison does is give one a clear idea of how much the C-segment itself has changed in the last generation – now the interiors of these cars are governed by touch-type

tablet interfaces and classy plastics, while the exteriors are dictated by bolder lines and LED lights. The move towards integrating more electronics on-board the Civic has led to the introduction of LaneWatch too, the camera linked safety system that allows the driver to mind the far blindspot. Honda seems to believe that it does not need to cover the near side. Additionally the interfaces available have increased – more USB ports as well as a dedicated area under the central divider to place your phone. And the rear view offers the dynamic tracking lines you need. The result of the first drive was quite good – we believe that the new Honda Accord resolves a host of perceived deficiencies with the existing model, with loads of power even at the base configuration - the bluetooth and 5” screen is quite a departure while the 7” tablet mode with Paddle shifters and a nicely sculpted interior makes for the perfect young aspirational driver’s favourite cabin. The car is manufactured in the United States and this brings with it the advantage of the FTA between the US and Oman in terms of a price advantage. The prices of the car range from the mid7000s to just under 10,000 Rials for the RS. MAY 2016

NEWWHEELS Rolls-Royce Black Badge

Rolls-Royce now offers the exclusive Black Badge treatment in Oman Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has announced a new facet of the ultra-luxury marque’s personality, a dark and edgy lifestyle statement: ‘Black Badge’. A permanent new sub-brand, Black Badge was unveiled earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show and transforms the character of both Ghost and Wraith. The new subbrand is expected to appeal to those people who are elusive and defiant, the risk takers and disruptors who break the rules and laugh in the face of convention. It is in this spirit that Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has announced that Black Badge ‘Inspired by dark edgy lifestyle’, is now available to order from Al Jenaibi International Automobiles, the sole authorised dealership for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in The Sultanate of Oman.

Brett Soso, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Regional Director for Middle East, Africa, Central Asia & South America commented on the reveal of Black Badge by saying, “Following the launch of Wraith in 2013, many of our new customers have gravitated towards the revitalised Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, as the brand most capable of encapsulating their truly individual lifestyles. Through the introduction of Black Badge, we are able to further satisfy the demands of these new customers for a more dark and assertive Ghost and Wraith, to suit their personalities and lifestyles and offer the most commanding presence on the super-luxury landscape.” The multiple layers of paint and lacquer that go into creating Black Badge Black are

repeatedly hand polished – the most exacting painting and polishing process ever used for a solid paint colour. The result is the deepest, darkest and most intense black ever seen on a production car surface. The centrepiece of the Black

Badge cabin is the aerospacegrade aluminium-threaded carbon fibre composite surfacing. The launch of Black Badge further demonstrates Rolls-Royce Motor Car’s luxury credentials as the world’s leading super-luxury brand.

NEWWHEELS 2016 Harley Davidson Roadster

Harley-Davidson Sportster range gets new ‘Roadster’ iPhone 6 every week. The Montero Sport is powered by a 3.0L MIVEC V6 petrol engine that produces 219 hp@6,000rpm and 285Nm@4,000rpm making for a reasonable power pack. This is mated to Mitsubishi’s new 8-speed automatic transmission that delivers a smoother, more luxurious ride and improved fuel efficiency. The car also comes with a very comprehensive list of active and passive safety features. MMC’s own RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body design and a total of up to seven SRS airbags provide occupants with outstanding passive safety. Active safety features include a Forward Collision Mitigation system (FCM), Blind Spot Warning system (BSW), and the Ultrasonic misacceleration Mitigation System (UMS). Handling stability, ride and quietness have also been taken to the next level through optimisation of the suspension and improvements to the body mounts. The all-new Montero Sport also uses a furtherevolved version of MMC’s own SuperSelect 4WD-II four-wheel drive system. This is complemented by other features including Hill Descent Control, selectable 2WD and 4WD modes, intelligent assistance in challenging conditions, and the new Off-road Mode that enhances traction and provides even better allterrain performance and stability on demanding surfaces. Together with its advanced suspension and outstanding all-around clearance, all these features combine to provide a one of a kind vehicle with both on- and offroad capabilities.

Harley-Davidson has added to the 1200cc V-twin range of the Sportster with a new Roadster. Part of the Dark Custom lineup, the Roadster offers a look that harks back to the bikes of the 1950’s and 1960’s. The bike features 19-inch front cast alloys and an offset-split 18-inch cast alloy rear wheel. “The wheels were inspired by classic laced wheels, and are the most intricate cast wheel we’ve ever created,” said Harley-Davidson Industrial Designer Ben McGinley. “The interlacing spokes shoot outward toward opposite sides of the wheel, creating a dramatic visual effect. These wheels are also very light for their size, which contributes to the Roadster’s handling performance.” Additionally the Roadster features

43mm inverted single-cartridge forks with tri-rate springs with greater travel – 4.5-inches in front and 3.2-inches in the rear. The bike gets ABS as standard with dual floating rotors in the front. “Since its introduction in 1957, the Harley-Davidson Sportster has proved capable of constant reinvention, and the Roadster writes a new chapter in that story,” said Harley-Davidson Director of Styling Brad Richards. “We’ve watched our customers take the Sportster in so many different directions. The Roadster is a mash-up of styling genres, but the intent was to build a rider’s motorcycle, a Sportster that’s lean and powerful and connects the rider to the road.”

Bridgestone launches innovative customer scheme

B

ridgestone in the region have announced the launch of a new outreach program that will see their officials and their distributors reach out to their customers with a combination of education about tyre safety and maintenance instructions. In addition to that the company is also launching an offer for customers that is linked to a three-year warranty on the purchase of their tyres. In this scheme, buyers are issued with a tyre data card that tracks their ownership of the tyre and on the tyre getting damaged, the dealer will either repair it for free (if he considers it repairable) or offer a tiered discount structure on a new tyre. The structure is interesting in that it takes the minimum useable tread depth of 1.6mm as the base – if the tyre has crossed that then the tyre needs replacing at the customers cost. In cases where the tread depth is above 1.6mm 18

MAY 2016

a percentage of tyre use is calculated and an appropriate discount is offered. Speaking at the event, Kensuke Yoshida, Director Consumer Product Business, Bridgestone Middle East & Africa pointed out that Bridgestone Corporation has held the global number one spot in terms of volume and turnover for the past eight years. He further added, “’Serving Society with Superior Quality’ is the mission statement of Bridgestone. Our commitment to quality stems out of a passion for improving the safety and lives of people everywhere. As a leading company in the industry deploying our business globally, we are expected to provide tyres that provide utmost safety. Bridgestone is the world’s largest tyre and rubber company, we strongly believe conducting Tyre Safety educational activities is Bridgestone’s responsibility.” The current scheme is also

part of a consumer education program that takes on from a similar intensive approach organised in Japan every year on April 8th by the tyre industry’s nodal body. Bridgestone Middle East & Africa will be holding a series of visits across the GCC countries in which 100 safety advisors will visit 150 outlets, using their visits to educate customers about tyre safety and maintenance. The campaign is visually centred around the depiction of tyre treads on the palm of a hand – to inform customers that the tyre’s contact patch on the ground is often only that large. Speaking about the specifics, Yusuke Tokoshima, Deputy GM for Consumer Business, Bridgestone Middle East & Africa said, “Internal market research shows that approximately 30% of vehicles on the road are with improper inflation pressures. Some of these tasks are hassle-free,

easy to maintain and should be carried out at least once a month. We want to raise awareness and highlight that regular maintenance can prevent accidents and prolong tyre life in addition to prioritizing tyre safety throughout the region.” Bridgestone has also released a quick to-do list for car users that will help in looking after your own tyres: • Do a daily visual check • Check that all tyres have appropriate inflation pressure • Check the sidewalls for cracks or unusual bulges and remove any foreign objects (e.g. stones or nails) that could puncture your tyre • Do a Monthly Tyre Pressure Check • Do not forget to check the inflation pressure of your spare tyre • Check for Irregular Wear

Celebrating Queen’s 90th birthday in true British style Jaguar Land Rover and Mohsin Haider Darwish LLC, the official retailer partner in the Sultanate of Oman, were proud to partner in the celebrations of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday organised by the British Embassy last month. The event was organised at the Port Sultan Qaboos on the 19th of April 2016 to coincide with the arrival of the world famous Cunard liner ‘The Queen Elizabeth’ in Muscat. An exclusive event was organised in an air conditioned tent on berth 1/2 of the port with the liner serving as a majestic back drop. More than 200 guests comprising of VIPs, government officials, representatives

of the British and Omani business communities and Omani graduates of British educational establishments attend the event. Themed as one of the British street parties which have historically served to commemorate momentous events such as VE Day at the end of World War II or the Queen’s Jubilees, millions took part in street parties in 1977 for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. The tradition continued for years with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002, the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April 2011 and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June 2012. Speaking on the occasion HE Jon Wilks, Her Britannic Majesty’s Ambassador

said: “Today we are celebrating Her Majesty’s long reign and the great, historic relations between Great Britain & the Sultanate of Oman. But we are also turning to the future, confident that our two countries will remain committed to each other in a relationship of growing importance. We wish long life to Their Majesties Sultan Qaboos bin Said and Queen Elizabeth. What better setting to do it, than in Port Sultan Qaboos alongside the Cunard liner Queen Elizabeth at an exciting time for the future vision of tourism in Oman with the country’s planned development of the Port as the Sultanate’s showcase tourism and leisure venue.”

For sixth year running, US-based Ward’s Auto has evaluated the interiors of new and substantially updated cars released in 2015. Forty seven cars were shortlisted and not so surprising seven of the top 10 spots have been captured by luxury brands. Here is the list of winners alphabetically, by brand and brief description of the award winning features.

AUDI TTS

BMW 7 Series

Cadillac XT5

Chevrolet Camaro

Chrysler Pacifica

Significantly upgraded with seemingly endless list of features, such as the gesture control, wireless phone charging, and illuminated speakers for the Bower & Wilkins sound system.

The sixth-generation Camaro sets a new standard for an interior in the segment and the effort boils down to improved material choices and the incorporation of many more soft surfaces, as well as the available ambient lighting system. 22

Virtual Cockpit concept in the TT family eliminates the central infotainment screen in favour of a high resolution multifunction instrument display. The TTS comes with a rich mix of leather, bespoke stitching and aluminium trim.

The new XT5 replaces the SRX and the use of “first-rate materials” include semi-aniline leather, satin-finish wood, microsuede headliner, and metallic accents.

Chrysler’s Pacifica MPV replaces the Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Town & Country, and the export-only Chrysler Grand Voyager. It features much richer design and material. Just as impressive were the second and third row Stow ‘n Go seats.

Lexus RX

Mercedes-Benz GLC

Nissan Maxima

Honda has come back in the game confidently with a new model that’s much larger, more expressive, and aesthetically spot on interior.

The new GLC’s interior comes across as supremely comfortable along with high-resolution display in the instrumentation area and a voice recognition system that works well.

The car’s interior is richly laid out, but also doesn’t neglect its “utilitarian purpose” with its massive boot helped out by second row seats that lie nearly flat.

The new Maxima made a brilliant first impression with expert craftsmanship in its cabin. Noteworthy elements are its two-tone flat bottomed steering wheel, active noise cancellation and sound enhancement, and its “liquid chrome” trim.

‘s Take

Traditionally, Ward’s 10 Best Interiors list include mainstream, affordable vehicles. Since, the average price of a new vehicle in the US has gone up, the benchmark that defines mainstream and affordable vehicles has also been affected.

Volvo XC90

The premium SUV commanded admiration for its diagonally grained wood, the Oreffors crystal transmission shifter, the massive tablet-style infotainment interface, and the thoughtful elimination of button clutter. MAY 2016

Mazda says no to RX sports coupe At last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, Mazda introduced its stunning RX-VISION concept and all eyes were on a possible production announcement. There’s a bit of disappointment in that respect as Mazda has formally said that a new

RX is not on the cards. Mazda’s global director and senior managing executive officer, Yuji Nakemine said the RXVISION was “kind of a dream of bringing that to the market in the future.” He went on to specify

there is “no specific plan to mass-produce the vehicle.” Nakemine also hinted that only if the company will make good money with existing products it will be able to spend more on engineering.

‘s Take

Mazda’s approach is suggesting cautious optimism and basically saying the company isn’t willing at this point to spend a lot of money to develop a new rotary-powered car. Meanwhile, it is reported that Mazda has filed a patent application for a new rotary turbocharged engine. Let’s hope a new RX model is launched in 2020 to coincide Mazda’s centenary in business.

Toyota discontinues Scion sub brand Toyota’s youth oriented subbrand in US, 13-year-old Scion, better known for quirky designs has failed to catch on despite some good engineering. To compound the problem, low petrol prices in the US are making small cars hard to sell. As a result, Toyota will stop selling or promote Scion and instead will offer the re-badged line-up as Toyota models beginning with the 2017 model-year.

‘s Take

Although Scion’s struggles have been evident for some time, Toyota had invested design energy and marketing power in the brand. Appropriate for the time, Toyota envisioned Scion as an entry point for cost-conscious, young buyers. In that respect, the strategy worked. The average age of a Scion buyer was 36 years old, and 70 per cent of the brand’s buyer’s had never purchased a Toyota before. But critically panned design and product choices such as the iQ mini car was seen as a misfit in the portfolio. Moreover, the brand failed to reach Millennial buyers through innovative marketing. Scion now joins other auto brands that have recently gone defunct, such as Chrysler’s Plymouth, Ford’s Mercury and GM’s Hummer, Saturn, Saab, Pontiac and Oldsmobile. All this ended as a case of too little, too late.

Jaguar has announced the SVR badge will not be restricted to V8-powered cars, as smaller engines and EVs are also on the agenda. In an interview with CarAdvice , Jaguar’s director of public relations, Richard Agnew, revealed the company’s performance division called “Special Vehicle Operations” (SVO) will work on SVR models with smaller engines and even on electric vehicles. This means there will be SVR-badged cars with fewer cylinders than the F-Type SVR which has a mighty V8 supercharged 5.0-liter. He reconfirmed the company’s plans to introduce an electric vehicle and he believes there is great potential in a performance EV given the way power and torque are delivered in an electric vehicle. Agnew went on to specify a SVR electric vehicle is going to be “bloody quick,” but didn’t wish to elaborate on the subject as it’s too soon to talk about such a model. That doesn’t mean the six-year-old 5.0-liter V8 engine is on its way to retirement, on the contrary. Jaguar’s chief engineer, Mike Cross, says the eight-cylinder engine hasn’t reached its full potential yet and there are ways of squeezing more power above the current 575 horsepower (423 kilowatts) and 516 pound-feet (700 newton meters) in the aforementioned F-Type SVR. It remains to be seen which other JLR models will get the SVR treatment to join the existing Jaguar F-Type and Range Rover Sport SVRs. What we do know is Special Vehicle Operations is also working on warm SV-badged models that will be positioned underneath the full-blown SVRs.

2016 Jaguar F-Pace

Jaguar is making a bold move with the F-Pace. It enters territory that is seen as the natural space of Range Rover, but it is trying to do this without treading on claws. We drive the F-Pace on the roads of Montenegro Author: Raj Warrior | Photography: Supplied

I

t isn’t as if the place is unknown. We’re of course referring to Montenegro, the venue for the latest global launch from Jaguar. From our school days we knew that the new republic was one of the footnote constituents of the old Yugoslavia. And landing in a small airfield near Kotor bay, the kick-off point for our drive, did nothing to change our perception of the country. After all, in how many places in the world can you walk off an aircraft into a limousine and drive off without the smallest customs formalities or indeed of immigration – only our passports were needed, not us. But that’s not to put down Montenegro. If anything, we rather liked the quaintness and lack of suspicion and definitely fell in love with the scenery. For reference, remember the newer of James Bond’s Casino Royale movies? It was filmed here. So what were we doing in the grand film set of the Bond movie, with a brand that prefers to be seen as the bad guy’s choice? The vehicle in question is the new Jaguar F-Pace, a move into the premium crossover segment that has been built up over the past year, with events including a loop-the-loop on the shores of the Thames with the car. Why is it important for Jaguar and how does it slot in with the group’s SUV and utility vehicle presence through the Land Rover and Range Rover badges? The Jaguar F-Pace does use a lot of the synergies of having the expert 4WD team inhouse. But the story begins a little before that. For one, it is the ideal move into the crossover territory for the brand, building on the floorpan and platform of

30

MAY 2016

the brand new XE and XF, a platform that had been designed for this move in the first place. Body construction is solidly aluminium and alloy based, although, as engineers inform us the door panels are still steel (purportedly for weight balance although we do think that it may also have something to do with side intrusion requirements). Design “We designed the all-new F-PACE to be first and foremost a Jaguar. That’s why it has exciting proportions, a dynamic stance, pure surfaces and a beautiful sensuality about it. Its progressive, purposeful appearance has clearly been influenced by the F-TYPE. “Every Jaguar should draw your eye from 200 metres away and I believe the all-new F-PACE’s presence on the road is second to none in this class. The Lightweight Aluminium Architecture gave us the design freedom to create a car with latent poise – a svelte car with attitude. “It looks assertive yet not aggressive. But it’s also versatile and equipped with realworld answers to everyday questions. The all-new F-PACE is an all-weather, all-surface Jaguar sports car, life-proofed for five people and their belongings.” This quote was voiced to us at the event and is part of the press kit and is attributed to Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar. It serves as a good nodal point to analyse what’s happened to the design story. There are large sweeping references to the broader Jaguar visual identity, including the air intake on the fenders and the grille treatment. Even the lights

look very familiar from the sedans and the F-type does serve as the inspiration for some of the styling. But it’s very much a story of getting the basic proportions right in the first place. So the F-Pace carries the aggressive grille, longish bonnet, A-pillar that sits well back of the front axle and a good match up of front and rear overhangs, while offering a profile that is almost shooting brake like along with a beltline that rises towards the rear. You aren’t going to mistake the F-Pace for any Land Rover or Range Rover. As for the interiors, there has been a huge move towards making the car a tech hub, which we will see migrating to

other Jaguar models too. The transmission controller is still the rotary knob, but the crossover doesn’t get the terrain selector of the hardcore SUVs. Instead, all the dirty work is done through a rather simple toggle of Normal, Dynamic or Adaptive Surface Response settings from a transom mounted selector. The 3.0-litre supercharged engines that the car gets for the region are no slouches. Rated in at either 340 or 380PS, the 90 degree V6 arrangement accommodates a Roots type supercharger in the V. Pick up is rather dramatic on the straights with the more powerful unit claimed to hit 100km/h in only 5.1 seconds. But that does

not mean that you’ll feel it right when you need it as we found out a few times when overtaking on the small two lane roads that Montenegro uses instead of highways. You are forced to dip in to the paddle shift and moved down to add to the boost and the engine responds nicely. It’s at times like this that you have to remind yourself this is a Jaguar crossover, not a car. Of course, with the powerful engine, torque distribution becomes an artform. The movement of power between the axles begins with the standard mode of all power to the rear. Jaguar tells us that their reaction time for a shift is as low as 165 milliseconds. That is the time it takes to change from all to the rear axle to a 50:50 distribution. That’s how long it takes some performance gearboxes to shift a gear up or down. That’s quick! Now, combine that ability to move power and torque around with the controller behind Adaptive Surface Response. What this does is move the logic behind Terrain response with its fixed and selectable settings for power delivery to something that’s a lot more analogue in the way it reacts. The whole idea is to let the car feel its way across poor terrain. To add to the pleasure and to make sure that the driver doesn’t spoil the show by unnecessarily giving some power when he shouldn’t, the system allows the driver to select a crawl speed (linked rather oddly to first triggering the hill descent control and then toggling ahead). It’s called All

34

MAY 2016

Surface Progress Control. Once set, the car can comfortably climb a rather muddy and slippery hill slope, even moving itself over obstacles like stones and small bushes, all the while ensuring that wheel spin is minimised and torque delivery maximised. We are rather curious to find out how the vehicle will do in deep sand. While ride response is controlled dynamically as well, there is no ride height control aka air springs. Again, we will put that down to the rather conscious decision of keeping the F-Pace distinct from the Range Rover goodies. Technology package In many respects, we believe that it will be the technology package that will differentiate this crossover from anything else in the market. And the fact that it is a Jaguar. At the heart of the tech package is a system called InControl that quite literally puts you in control. What it has done is migrate the ownership and control of your car almost into the ‘cloud’ as the tech guys like to say. For instance, you can download the relevant apps to your phone that allow you to plot a driving route in advance and send it to your car. Once you are in the car, the navigation takes you on the route and your system allows you to inform people of not only where you are, but whether you will be delayed for any reason. That’s just one of the examples. The other is an available activity band that doubles up as the key for the car. It’s very handy when

MAY 2016

35

The tech package pivots around InControl that allows for a user interface that ranges from drive customisation to choice of music and even the colour of the ambient lighting. And the experience is set to grow with additionally apps being developed for the ecosystem built on a proprietary Linux base – like the activity band that serves up locking and unlocking. Of course don’t discount the 15-speaker sound system and laser driven heads-up display. 36

gearbox makes for one happy driver. With dry weight starting off at just above 1820kgs for the 3.0-litre petrol engine car, pick up is nifty though not overly dramatic, while steering feel is very direct, using a traditional electromechanical system. That helped a lot on the really twisty sections of the two-lane road we drove over, with the car responding well to the Dynamic mode setting. Weight balance is good, although under braking the car feels like it understeers just a little. The engineers have done a good job of minimising the unsprung mass. The car offers torque vectoring and you feel the car actually adding in to your effort to hold the path. In fact the path was so tight on occasion that we had to switch on the 360 degree view cameras to figure out if we had any leeway. Perfect choice of driving environment, although not helped by the presence of inclement weather.

you go swimming or surfing – just leave your key in the car along with all your other valuables and then lock the car by tapping the band against the J of Jaguar on the tailgate. When you come back, press the boot release and tap it on J once again and lo presto the car unlocks. We don’t yet have an answer for what happens if the band shorts out or gets lost in the surf. The system also offers almost natural voice control if you don’t want to use Siri and learns your usage patterns. Driving Impressions Jaguar like in its growl and pick up, the car’s combination of 380PS on tap, a very rev happy engine and the ZF 8HP70 8-speed

Verdict It’s not a tough call at all. If you look at the premium Crossover market, you already know what the competition is like for a 5-seater highly agile unit with the right badge and features. And then look at the engines on offer, with either of the 3.0-litre supercharged units putting out more power than most competition. It is pegged directly against the Audi A5 and Porsche Macan, although is is slightly larger than the two. And it comes with a price tag that makes for a really compelling argument in its favour. But it is the technological package that combines with the performance one to really set the F-Pace apart. The car’s systems integrate well with your lifestyle and offer a means to carry it over into the automotive sphere. Nerdy driving at its best. MAY 2016

Lamborghini LP 580-2

We celebrate what we believe to be a rather exclusive drive of the Lamborghini Huracรกn LP580-2 that was unveiled in China a couple of days after we drove it in Oman Author: Raj Warrior | Photography: Elvis John Ferrao

T

he Italian supercar manufacturer from Sant’Agata Bolognese has not put a foot wrong in the past few years, staying true to its roadmap of producing some of the most intense sports cars in the world. Lamborghini has in fact been so successful with the model that their CEO has been moved to other pastures in the greater Volkswagen group, to open up a new sporting identity for Audi. But that doesn’t mean that the excitement is slowing down in Bologna. Take the

latest iteration of the Huracán to launch – the LP580-2. True to the model they followed with the Gallardo, Lamborghini have unveiled a two-wheel drive version of the platform, albeit with a slightly detuned engine but with some awesome road manners on hand. “The Lamborghini Huracán LP 580-2 continues the Lamborghini tradition of pure, visionary and technology-driven models,” says Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. “The rear-wheel drive

model fits perfectly into our Huracán family, appealing to those wanting an even more intense driving experience, or who currently drive other rear-wheeldrive marques and aspire to driving a Lamborghini. This is the purest expression of a Lamborghini to date, with classleading technological refinements. It is a serious car for serious drivers: it is maximum driving fun.” We were pleasantly surprised with the opportunity to spend a weekend driving the car on the roads of Muscat. If we MAY 2016

needed any reason to feel like we stuck out like a sore thumb, this was it. A bright green colour on that fascinating profile and the roar of an unfettered V10 engine was enough to bring out the kids and their mothers from the houses around. Our ‘no joyride’ policy served up no joy, but the car itself is an anything magnet – you name it. If anything, the 580-2 feels slightly better balanced in its visual stance. The front sits low, with a slightly different arrangement to the air intakes (apparently to maximise the downforce on the front axle). The rear deck gets a small lip that also aids the targeted downforce on the rear axle. And the car gets a unique set of 19” wheels that keeps it visually distinct from the 6104. The loss of top end horsepower should not be any worry to the buyer. For starters the 580-2 is 33 kilograms lighter, with a

weight balance of 40% on the front axle and 60% on the rear. The body structure is a continuation of the part aluminium, part carbon-fibre unit of the Huracán, with the stressed area around the C-pillar and behind the driver being made in one composite moulding. So now you have 580 horsepower on tap completely for the rear wheels to dispense to the road surface and that brings with it the need to put in a tailored traction and stability control package that factors in the rear-wheel drive arrangement. The differently tuned engine does not feel throttled at all. In fact, what seems to have been done is to move the mapping in favour of a better lower and mid-range performance. The power pack seems like it is poised on a knife edge, tap the accelerator and yoiu get that instant boost

of torque with the engine still in the low ranges. In some ways this engine behaves like a turbocharged unit (that it isn’t). And the top end seems to stretch on forever. The car offers a top speed of 320 km/h with the standing hundred achieved in 3.4 seconds. But its the journey up to that point that really makes the difference, The car’s drive mode controller is called ANIMA (that’s Italian for soul) or Adaptive Network Intelligent Management, although we think the four words were chosen because they best fit. This offers the choice to toggle between Strada, Sport and Corsa modes, with each of the drive modes offering a specific pattern to the car’s handling and response as well. This is because the magnetic suspension components are also tuned

The car sprints away like its tail is on fire. Every motion, every next flick of the gearshift lever is lived in the instant. It is in cars like the Huracán that you realise an almost ethereal connection with the intensity of the moment. in, effectively hardening or softening the response at wheel points depending on weight transfer and slip. The V10 engine is mated to a seven speed dual clutch gearbox with extremely quick shift times. You can even get the joy of launch control if you are comfortable with using both your feet. But that wasn’t allowed for the test drive (rightly so, we guess). Driving Impressions The last bit of driving we had done in the Huracán was on the Ascari track with the 610-4. Admittedly, the experience cannot be replicated on Oman’s roads, where the car’s silhouette and colour also serve as a police magnet. So while we got close on the 0-100 km/h mark with regular launch, we didn’t go near the top end. We had a run-in with the cops while out photographing the car, but fortunately weren’t doing anything stupid. The car sprints away like its tail is on fire. Every motion, every next flick of the gearshift lever is lived in the instant. It is in cars like the Huracán that you realise an almost ethereal connection with the

intensity of the moment. A good example is the car’s sport mode. The engine rumbles a wee bit louder, the razor sharp responses of the gearbox tantalise and you see the rev meter leap upwards towards the 8500rpm redline. But the seat padding is perfect, your view of the road is almost completely defined to a focal point amidst the growing blur and you are having to look three to four hundred metres ahead to plan your next move. Intense. In the Corsa mode, the wheels allow for a degree of slip as well as the stability control understands that you may just need to let the tail wag a little before it helps along. There seems to be a degree of torque vectoring built in too as the car seems to anticipate a hard corner and feed into it rather than fight it. We’ve done two other cars of a similar type over the past few weeks - the Audi R8 V10 and the Ferrari 488 Spider but we are bound to have no comparisons with these cars. Needless to say, the drive experience in each is so different that it really wouldn’t have made a difference. There’s no real comparison. You would be

looking at the LP580-2 for its overdose of low down torque, smooth revving engine and almost letter perfect handling. Verdict The Lamborghini LP580-2 is the sports car that serves both to offer a great price point and dollops of power and performance. It is actually the purer form of the Huracán platform as it presents the real joy of always rear-biased power. Yes the front lifts when you floor although even that is electronically (or magnetically in this case) dampened. But you would also look at the LP580-2 because it is such a useable car. Not if you have anything more than a golf bag, but what with the combination of cabin features that it does offer (including a fully LCD driven cockpit) and the ability to raise the nose at slow speeds (useful for getting over speed breakers and garage ramps) and the engine’s ability to offer a good level of fuel efficiency (relatively) by switching off a whole bank of five cylinders seamlessly when you aren’t taxing the accelerator, you have a fun loving car for the gentleman driver.

2016 Ferrari 488 Spider

44

MAY 2016

We’ve been in love with the Ferrari 488GTB, so it’s little wonder then that the Spider brings out a gleam in our eyes. We drive the car in the UAE. Author: Raj Warrior | Photography: Raj Warrior

I

t’s not every day that we get an invite from Ferrari to join them in the United Arab Emirates to spend some quality time with their latest addition to the test drive fleet. After all, when you are talking about sports cars valued at a quarter of a million dollars or thereabouts, you aren’t likely to find too many opportunities. Yes, we accepted the invitation and were put up in rather opulent style and then handed over the keys to the 488 Spider parked on the porch of our hotel. The 488 Spider was launched officially at last year’s Frankfurt Motorshow. And in June last year, we were driving the GTB variant on the track at Fiorano as part of a global press reveal. That in itself indicates how important the Spider is to

the product equation of the V8 engine powered 488 series. Visually the car stays true to most of the signature themes of the 488, including the elaborate aerodynamic modelling of the front lower valance, the overt fenders, LED equipped headlamps, the mirrors out on stalks as well as the styling around the air intakes for the rear bay (including, one must add the oddly styled door handles that increase the airflow efficiency into the engine bay by more than enough to justify the effort). The difference, as is the case here is all to the rear of the driver. The 488 Spider has to take on the mantle previously worn by the 458 Spider and it does this by sticking to the by now tried and tested formula of

a retractable hardtop made of lightweight aluminium. This allows the hard top to deploy and stash away in some rather limited real estate over the car’s engine, while keeping the profile tight. Visually, with the roof up, you may confuse the head-on view with the GTB. May, but it’s not likely if you do a double take. Of course the major difference from the rear is that the large fastback pane of glass covering the engine has disappeared, leaving the twin flying buttresses along the sides that now have a sculpted channel in between. The join lines between the panels of the retractable hard roof are visible from the side but only just and the rear on view is rather more interesting than on the GTB. MAY 2016

45

Treading its own visually distinct path, the Spider also has the wherewithal to deliver as a lifestyle choice. The roof does its jig in under 14 seconds (even in motion at upto 30 km/h) and weighs in at only 25 kgs. Additionally, once the roof is down, the cabin gets a glass windbreak that isolates the cabin to the level that you can hold a regular conversation while doing highway speeds as well as listen to the music on the radio. We took the car out on a hot and tepid Dubai morning and spent the whole of the morning cruising around with the air-conditioner at full blast and the roof down. It was cool enough in the cabin but you don’t want to do that with the cloud cover gone. The commonalities between the Spider and 488GTB are rather strong and striking. Almost nothing changes in the cabin other 46

than the provision of the roof switch. The car gets Apple’s CarPlay as standard and on pairing your iPhone with the system you are presented with the usual graphic welcome and layout. And the whole of the rest of the car stays true to the successful formula. It’s made of various types of aluminium alloy sheets with 11 different grades used to make up the spaceframe. From the data available it looks like the torsional stiffness of the Spider is the same as the Coupé despite the latter being an integral unit. It’s amazing how the engineers have managed this - no doubt by strengthening the sills and around the A-pillar. The engine too is the V8 turbocharged unit that powers the GTB. 3,902cc of volume coupled with the twin scroll turbo and some rather ingenious engineering

around the intake and exhaust piping have made for an engine that does more than enough justice as the replacement to the larger volume outgoing unit on the 458. The peak power on offer is 670PS with a torque of 760NM. Performance figures are a flat 3 seconds for the standing 100km/h with the standing 200km/h attained in 8.7 seconds. Top speed is claimed to be 325km/h although we didn’t try that. However, we had local auto journalist and all round good guy Gautam Sharma on board, who came along for logistics support and he did try to flog the maximum he could out of the car in the few isolated stretches we found. The V8 engine is paired with an F1 style seven speed transmission with a rather tall gearing up on the seventh gear. The control unit tries to send the car into a fuel

saving drive mode, especially when you’ve left the manettino in Sport mode. Once you bump that up to Race you don’t get the over eagerness to shift up. But for the times that engine prefers trundling along in the seventh gear, the mapping has reserved peak torque just for that – that’s why quite unlike a regular turbocharged engine’s torque curve, here you get the torque rising in little steps to max out above 3,000rpm. What this seeks to do is to balance the needs of the sensible side of the luxury car along with the outright sporty nature of the Spider.

The 488 Spider offers the current Ferrari cabin layout, with driver centred controls. The knobs and switches to the left and right of the driver control car setup on the left (including traction) and media and infotainment on the right.

Driving impressions Whether you leave the manettino in Sport or Race, the feeling is the same although there’s a difference in degree of thrust. The engine loves being revved and we can fully comprehend the reason for the performance figures on the car. It matches the GTB in almost every department. The beauty about the Ferrari cabin is of course how everything is centred in on the driver’s wheel and instrument binnacle. The centre console is completely secondary and may not exist in your umwelt as you floor the accelerator and speed away.

The progression through the gears is almost comical in its simplicity. Tap, tap, tap and you are already at highly illegal speeds, while the tachometer very happily invites you upwards to the 7000rpm redline. With a slightly bad stretch of road ahead all we had to do was hit the damper control with the left thumb and go off the gas pedal for a heartbeat. Even the position of the turn indicators is just perfect. We’ve had the privilege of throwing the GTB around a hard corner with side slip control at its best , allowing us to slide into a trun at very high speeds while

maintaining our intended path. We didn’t want to try the system on the Spider on public roads, but know what its capable of with the electronic bodyguard on-board. Verdict We’ve been asked this question before, at an event where another sports car was being highlighted and our answer is still pretty much that if we had the money to spend, the sports car in this category that we would most likely buy would be the 488. With the Spider the appeal has become just a little bit more intense. And can you blame us for it?

2016 Mitsubishi Montero

M

itsubishi Motors unveiled the third generation of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport in Thailand late 2015 and as promised released it as 2016 model year for export markets. From a career perspective, this SUV line-up has an interesting history to begin following its Gen I launch in Japan in 1996. It was available for export markets by 1997 and depending on where it was sold, Mitsubishi tried to give it an appropriate market name. As a result, the model was identified as the Challenger in Japan, Pajero Sport in Europe, Montero Sport in North America, South America and the Philippines, Nativa in parts of Latin America, the Caribbean and the Middle East, Shogun Sport in the United Kingdom and Strada G-Wagon in Thailand. Gen I was mechanically based on the Mitsubishi Strada pickup truck and shared many components and some body parts including front doors. Gen II was based on the ladder frame chassis of the Triton or L200 pick-up and was gradually introduced to selected markets like Russia, South-East Asia and the Middle East following its 2008 debut at the Moscow Auto Salon. 50

MAY 2016

Market demand for body-on-frame type SUVs still healthy in the Middle East and auto majors building and selling them have ensured that they are now more stylish and come with generous features. The latest model to represent the segment from Mitsubishi is its all-new Gen III 2016 Montero Sport. Automan attended the car’s launch and first drive event in Oman last month Author: Chandan Basu Mallik

Meanwhile, the SUV market has been continuously evolving with focus areas including design, engineering, comfort, performance and features. As a result, Mitsubishi has reworked this model quite extensively inside out in a bid to get a standalone personality and profile. The Montero Sport’s key rivals in the region would include Toyota Fortuner and Chevrolet Trailblazer. There’s lot of evidence that the creative team thought out the design which now includes the brand’s contemporary `Dynamic Shield’ face which now adorns contemporary Mitsubishi models these days. Although it doesn’t seem to share much with other Mitsubishis in terms of design language, it does have a stronger presence thanks to standalone design language which has brought in lot of angular sheet metal surface treatments. So, when parked next, to say, the Outlander, the key differentiators in stance and appearance become much clear. While overall silhouette is similar to the outgoing model, the new detailing ensures a modern and youthful profile on its 2,800mm wheel base and 4,785mm length. The front MAY 2016

face features a more fluid front grille with chrome surrounds and angular headlamp cluster. When view from the side three quarters, the Montero Sport gains a more prominent character line, flared wheel arches that take in 265/60R18 wheel combo. Considering that the SUV has pick-up underpinnings, these smart influences and new design elements gives it a more upscale character and stays away as much as it can from its utilitarian pick-up truck roots. The rear end signature is a set of unique for the segment stylish vertical tail lights which blend nicely with the car’s overall edgier settings. Fit, finish and panel gaps are good and no cost cutting is evident so far. While modern looks have been achieved, it doesn’t come at the cost of structural safety engineering. In fact, the Montero Sport uses Mitsubishi’s RISE or Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution body design and has a total of seven airbags for full occupant protection. In terms of active safety features, aside from the prerequisite ABS with EBD, the all-new Montero Sport features a lot of firsts for the Japanese brand including: Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM), Blind Spot Warning (BSW) and Ultrasonic misacceleration Mitigation System (UMS). And helping it slot into small parking spaces, it has a multi-around monitor that gives a 360-degree Bird’s Eye view around the car. Inside the car, the cabin feels it was designed to be practical and utilitarian and its close association with its crossover siblings becomes evident. There are a few bin parts from the current Outlander like the MMI system, steering column, information displays among a few others. But, the effort made in making the car more user friendly and cosy is evident all around. Plastics used feel much better to touch and the test car came with two-tone colour scheme. While the interior is much better, but it doesn’t offer the premium feel of an Audi or Mercedes. Compared to the outgoing model, the front seats are comfortable and supportive and driver ensures optimised adjustability aided with the tilt/telescoping steering wheel. The seats wide enough and comes with low bolsters on the seat cushion. Second and third row seats are also nicely designed. This is interesting as one of key rivals -- the Toyota Fortuner is slightly taller and wider than the Montero Sport and yet there’s no apparent compromise in comfort or space management. The Optitron instrument cluster is traditional and as expected comes with crisp and clear read outs. Meanwhile, switchgear is easy to sort out. Despite smaller windows, all around visibility is quite good. It also boasts a few upmarket touches like dual-zone automatic climate control, “multi-around view” monitor, and an electronic parking brake. Mitsubishi’s small detail changes to make a difference in the midsized SUV segment should eventually pay off. Depending on markets, the feature pack offered will vary and so will the powertrain options. The SUV for Oman is powered by a

3.0-litre MIVEC V6 engine that produces 219hp at 6,000rpm and 285Nm at 4,000rpm when mated to Mitsubishi’s new 8-speed automatic transmission. The car even features paddle shifters on the steering wheel for manual up or downshifts. Meanwhile, a new Super-Select 4WD-II system uses electronic controls with an off-road mode and hill descent control. A low-speed transfer case with lockable centre differential is engaged using a console knob similar to that found in Range Rovers. Compared to its Triton/L200 pick-up sibling, the Montero Sport has also benefited from tweaks made to its suspension design and engineering improvements to the body mounts for better isolation which in turn improves the vehicle’s handling, stability and ride comfort, according to Mitsubishi. Driving impressions On paper, 219hp might sound a bit low for a mid-sized SUV, but one has to remember that in some markets it is powered by even lesser output engines. What matters is the torque delivery in this class of vehicle. The engineering changes have definitely improved the Montero Sport most departments. The car’s exhaust note is nice and since the powertrain is also tuned for fuel efficiency [17 per cent], to some it may feel sluggish initially. But unlike CVT set-ups [Outlander for instance], the transmission is a gem to operate and is very smooth with hardly noticeable changes in-between shifts. Even the manual Tiptronic works well and even in this mode, the gear mapping is controlled by the electronics which means gears will hold as long necessary and will upshift automatically whenever required. A stiffened chassis and revised suspension makes the handling tighter, without sacrificing ride comfort. The car is quite smooth on road and suspension does well to absorb road imperfections even before it reaches the driver and occupants. Even with its standardised suspension set-up and reasonable ground clearance, off-road, the SUV has a lot to offer through the pre-set driver-friendly terrain response system which is delightful to operate and hence venturing out off-road is not an issue. Overall, it doesn’t feel like a soft crossover, but is able to exhibit confident manners, road holding in a car-like environment. This aspect, we think is the strongest differentiator between the Outlander V6 and the Montero Sport when it comes to performance and capabilities. Verdict The sturdy Mitsubishi Montero Sport is built for durability and allterrain capability. Using rugged body-on-frame construction, the Mitsubishi Montero Sport is intended to be a tough and reliable sport utility for the more adventurous user who is looking beyond a crossover in terms of performance and handling but wants creature comforts and latest features found in luxury cars. 2016 Ford Focus Ecoboost

54

MAY 2016

Ford’s ubiquitous Focus is seen as the brand’s main C-segment entry. The 2016 model year brings with it a change of engine to the peppier 1.5-litre Ecoboost unit and some changes inside. Does the car still stand out? Author: Raj Warrior | Photography: Elvis John Ferrao

T

he largest volume seller in the region is the C-segment family sedan. It has remained so, despite the launch of compact SUVs and more affordable B-segment alternatives. And the Focus continues to be one of the largest selling in this segment of cars. It has been a landmark model for both Ford Europe and America and the company is using this quick refresh to make it more so. While the model is essentially a carry on from the 2015 model year, this year its 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine option is being replaced with the more powerful 1.5-litre Ecoboost engine with 150hp of output.

This marks another model in the region that has been kitted out with the Ecoboost. The turbocharged engine is becoming a primary part of Ford’s arsenal as it revamps its models and makes its stable more amenable to the tighter CAFE standards. Even without the new engine, the Focus has a lot going for it. It is built on a very reliable platform that hasn’t needed too much fiddling with. The Model is available in three different body styles – hatchback, sedan and wagon and even offers an ST version that pushes the advantages of FWD power with a handy six-speed

manual gearbox. And we aren’t even discussing the potential of the powerful Focus RS yet. Styling has been a strong point of the Focus, the car looks edgy and very modern and has made a very nice transition through the model generations as it integrated new technologies and ideas. The sedan manages to retain some of the hatchbacks edginess past the C-pillar but that’s largely because the rear box has been kept a bit foreshortened. If you look at the car closely you will realise that the front overhang is a little more than you would expect, but that’s MAY 2016

55

The Ford Focus Ecoboost packs a smaller 1.5-litre 150hp unit into the engine bay, but at the same time has to handle the ventilation needs of the hotter turbocharged unit. Cabin space is generous though newer competition has moved ahead. But the car continues to be a leader in the handling and safety departments. Our test car had engine start/stop although we are told that it’s no longer available on the model from this year. Additionally cruise control also now features an alternative mode that allows you to set a max speed and drive normally, useful in city areas aith lots of speed cameras.

56

MAY 2016

the result of an inclined engine as well as lots of equipment ahead of the cylinders. The inside of the cabin has become a little bigger than before with the centre console now hogging a large part of the dashboard. A monochromatic display sits on top off and visually offset from the generally classier instrumentation below it although the general feeling of almost vertical louvres and knobby switches is carried across the Figo and Fiesta as well. Cabin space and comfort are top level as is the quality of the air-conditioning. In terms of space and comfort, the Focus continues to remain very Europe specific, with many competitors having expanded their offered cabin volume and comfort because the global consumer now demands more. However, what really does set the Focus apart is its ‘focus’ (so to speak) on safety, with one of the best packages available along with ESP, Traction control and the like. It also brings with it the virtues of torque vectoring making the car one of the best drives in its class. Driving Impressions The more powerful engine is based on Ford’s Ecoboost that combines turbocharging with direct injection while offering the ability to switch to a partial

Atkinson cycle to reduce consumption. The finer control offered over the firing sequence with the ability to time valve opening and closing properly makes for a fine balance being on tap. There’s no doubt that the new powerpack is quicker off the block than before. Mated with the six-speed auto gearbox with SelectShift the car can effect a good sprint but that is once you factor in the little bit of turbo lag that you encounter. Once you keep the engine revved above 2,000 rpm that is no longer a factor so the car can be driven rather sportily if needed although it isn’t quite in the class of the older 2.0-litre unit that offers more linear performance. Of course the torque vectoring helps in curves, and a very good place to check that out would be a tightening radius turn like we have in a couple of places in Muscat. The torque delivery is well controlled and there is a little selective braking too just to feed into the turn. Suspension response is comfortable and thankfully kept just a little tighter than the median while NVH levels are very much top of class. The electric power steering is noticeably light and responsive although at times there is a hint of vagueness especially around the dead centre point. It does weight up nicely as you dial into a curve. Add to that instrumentation

that is sculpted with little tactile telltale signatures and you can do most of the steering wheel control without actually taking your eyes off the road. The one change we would really like is Ford changing the selectShift arrangement to offer tap to shift on the knob instead of the little +/- toggle. It’s not a problem when the car gets the paddle shifter but that’s above the pay grade of our test car. Verdict The Focus didn’t really need this midlife change of engine other than it fitting in better with Ford’s global responsibilities and ambitions. But since it is being changed, it is good that the power and performance quotient is moving upwards. Having a turbocharged engine brings with it a certain thrust either on added oomph or far better mileage – in this Ecoboost the balance is nicely done, for both parameters are given equal importance. Our advice would be to get the highest specced variant that you can afford, since you will appreciate the system’s integration with your external USB and phone sources as well. We would have definitely considered the 1.5-litre Ecoboost in our comparison segment if we were buying a C-segment car. It still has a great value feel about it. MAY 2016

2016 MG GS

Morris Garages or MG has bounced back as a brand with some very interesting new models. The last Dubai motorshow saw it unveil the GS in the region and the compact SUV has now come to Oman Author: Raj Warrior | Photography: Elvis John Ferrao

E

veryone may not want to buy a compact SUV , but every manufacturer seems to want to manufacture one. After all the value proposition is right there – you are extending an existing car platform to accommodate a higher ride height, a straighter sitting posture and hopefullyt some extra luggage over that the car carries. And there you have it – a crossover that can then be marketed for more money than a car. In this case the latest brand to enter the crossover space. MG is a brand owned now by SAIC of China and has moved its manufacturing completely to China. The new crossover is built on a new scalable architecture called the SSA platform that has been jointly developed with SAIC and the model takes a lot of cues from the CS concept that they fielded a few years ago. That design and much of the engineering work and engineering processes continue to be done by British personnel. The GS is compact in size with dimensions of 4500mm x 1855mm x 1699mm on a

wheelbase of 2650mm. The height is kept a little lower than expected at 1699mm by keeping a sharply coupé like profile. this is aided by the fastback tailgate. The frontal styling is also something that remains etched in your mind as the grille takes pride of presence with two slivers of grille sweeping away from it with a large lower airdam area that combines the foglights, honeycomb mesh and large bumper elements. And yes, the car also gets a front and rear rub plate to protect the ends of the underbody. The platform sits on a ground clearance of 185mm and thus isn’t really meant to be an outright off-roader despite being equipped with a rather powerful engine in the 220PS, 2.0-litre turbocharged unit that offers torque of 350Nm. This is mated with a six-speed automatic gearbox with paddleshift gear controller. The engine is also shared with other SAIC models including the Roewe RX5 but in this case is used to make a difference with the other offerings in the region. We had been introduced to the car initially

at the motorshow, with an outdoor display highlighting the off-roading abilities of the model. These will no doubt continue to be the main draw, including the AWD with lockable centre differential. Apparently there is an option available with upto 4 diff locks, but we don’t see that coming to the region anytime soon. The cabin is definitely well thought out. The quality of touch points and plastics is above par, with some instrumentation actually looking good enough to be on premium brands. The central display is one such story. It is good, but it suffers from a bit of glare induced drop in visibility and the graphics seem out of place by a couple of years. None of that is a deal breaker though – if we were buying the car we would put an antiglare film on the display and not have any worries. The advantage is that the rearview camera shows a video stream that is of a higher resolution than many others do and the overlaid path markers move along with the turn of the steering wheel. The MG GS offers a rather good package in the crossover segment, almost offering a premium product in a mainstream brand. Its main selling point is the styling and build quality partnered with a very peppy engine, although the turbocharger shows laggy moments and a lot of heat build up in the bay. Instrumentation and features like hill hold and auto brake hold are straight out of the premium segment.

60

MAY 2016

Another feature you don’t expect in a car from China is the automatic switchover engine start/stop system. For some time we didn’t believe it worked until we were out away from the city. It does. Driving Impressions Honestly, the GS is more powerful than we expected. It competes head on with the regular batch of 2.4 and 2.5-litre cars and offers some healthy power and torque. But the catch is that the turbocharger does have a noticeable lag and you tend to paddle your way into a cog that keeps the engine revs above 2,000rpm, especially when you are indulging in a lot of overtaking. It really helps that torque is available in the mid-range to push ahead. The brakes are good, suspension response is firm and predictable and steering input is linear. The car is also equipped with hill descent and ascent control through its automatic brake hold. Naturally this translates into an electronic parking brake arrangement. Verdict The GS has the wherewithal to be competitive in its segment and offers a feature to feature benefit in most cases. Now it will need to be offered at the right price keeping in mind its positioning. MAY 2016

2016 Infiniti QX60

Infiniti has comprehensively enhanced its QX60 crossover SUV for 2016, introducing a wide range of changes that improve the exterior design and its driving dynamics, while showcasing new features and technologies that improve comfort, convenience and safety

62

MAY 2016

T

he QX60 is a key model in Infiniti’s portfolio of cars and global sales of the model during the first eleven months of 2015 reached 48,684, year-onyear, representing a growth of 24 per cent in the US alone. The incoming car reflects an evolution of Infiniti’s current design DNA and in revised form accentuates its powerful elegance and craftsmanship. The exterior of the QX60 reflects Infiniti’s typical design-led organic flow approach and execution of muscular shapes and flowing lines. The look is unmistakably Infiniti and the new QX60 features familiar signature brand design cues such as the dramatic double-arch front grille, doublewave bonnet and crescent-cut D-pillar. At the front, the redesigned double-arch grille is flanked by standard-fit bi-xenon headlamps. There is greater use of LED lighting, including new LED daytime

running lights. Complementing the revised headlamps are front fog lamps, which feature LED lighting and chrome finishers. The lighting extends to the side and rear of the vehicle, with side indicators and taillights sitting flush to body and incorporating the turn signal in red. The rear hatch has also received attention, featuring a new chrome finisher, while retaining its power lift function. Above the rear hatch a new roof-mounted and body colour “shark fin” antenna has been added, working in-conjunction with the in-glass antenna. Incorporated into both front and rear bumpers are new, flush-mounted sonar sensors. Except for two additions at the centre of the front bumper, these body-coloured sensors no longer have a surrounding bezel, adding to the premium appearance.

The upgraded cabin gets better sound insulation and revised engine mounts for smoother and quieter rides. The QX60 utilizes a flat platform floor, which not only allows for a more dramatic design approach but also enhances interior space and flexibility. The second-row seating features almost six inches travel, adjustable either to the benefit of passenger leg room or rear cargo space, as required. Traditionally a compromised area, the third-row seating is able to accommodate children or adults with practical head- and knee room. Access to the third row of seats is facilitated by wide door openings and the long forward travel of the secondrow seating. The second-row seating’s unique forward movement function also negates the need to remove any child seat fitted to the second row when accessing

MAY 2016

MAY 2016

the third-row seating. In addition, both second- and third-row seating incorporate a split folding function, 60/40 for the second row and 50/50 for the third row, to further increase versatility and practicality. Both rows also recline for greater occupant comfort. Handling and performance get a lot of attention and the car’s new suspension components and settings combine to deliver superior levels of both comfort and agility, while a revised steering system delivers greater feedback for a more rewarding drive. The smooth and aerodynamic shape of the QX60 achieves an unchanged drag coefficient of 0.34. The new model manages airflow over, under and around the exterior to promote road holding and high-speed stability. A front underbody spoiler, integrated rear spoiler and rear tire deflectors contribute to achieving zero lift across both front and rear axles. Available in both front-wheel drive and optional Intelligent All-Wheel Drive versions, depending on markets, the QX60 is offered with a choice of powerful and efficient powertrains - 3.5-litre V6 petrol or Hybrid. The V6 engine produces 265 horsepower at 6,400 rpm with peak torque of 336 Nm available at 4,400

rpm. The Infiniti Drive Mode Selector (DMS) allows the driver to vary throttle response and gearshift patterns to optimize performance for the conditions and their own preferences. The driver can select from four drive modes - Standard, Sport, Eco and Snow - using a rotary dial mounted in the centre console. To enhance stability and feel through the controls when cornering, the Active Trace Control system links with the QX60’s standard Vehicle Dynamic Control system (upgraded for 2016), to automatically apply the brakes in a specific pattern and then smooth engine torque characteristics while accelerating. Completing the dynamic changes, a retuned vehicle-speed-sensitive power steering system, now requiring just 2.9 turns lock-to-lock, offers the driver increased response to steering inputs and enhanced feedback. Seven new equipment packages and a new range of exterior colours for 2016 allow customers to take a truly tailored approach in specifying the QX60 premium crossover to meet their individual needs and preferences. The 2016 Infiniti QX60 is available across the Middle East from AED 185,000.

CONCEPTUAL Chery FV2030

At the Auto China autoshow last month in Beijing, Chery introduced the futuristic FV2030 concept Chinese automaker Chery is looking at its future seriously and took one of its domestic motor shows to showcase what it had in mind. Described as an interpretation of the company’s future thinking and outlook, the radically styled FV2030 is a crossover coupe featured the brand’s ‘Life in Motion’ design language 66

MAY 2016

and came with a bold front face with a ‘floating’ grille, massive air intakes, and a relatively high bonnet. The styling continued further back as the concept has semi-transparent gullwing doors, gloss black mudguard arches, massive alloy wheels shod with specially designed tyres. Designers also created eye-catching side

skirts and camera pods which replace the traditional side mirrors. Last but not least, the FV2030 has a tailgate-mounted spoiler, an aluminium skid plate, and a floating LED taillight bar. Chery didn’t have much to say about the interior but the minimalistic cabin has white leather seats and LED lighting.

More interestingly, the automaker envisions a “fantasy” 3D holographic display that provides vehicle and infotainment information. Since the FV2030 was a presented more as a design concept, the car maker didn’t offer any specific mechanical

details but officials at the show did confirm the model as a new energy vehicle which could have an electrified powertrain. The crossover also featured “smart pilotless technology” which meant it had several autonomous driving features.

electric motor that produces more than 600 PS. BAIC says Arcfox-7 was designed at the company’s new R&D facility in Barcelona, Spain. It features a sleek shape that is highlighted by muscular wheel arches and a curvaceous rear. Up front, it has a very

low-profile look that consist of tapered LED headlights, low-slung bumper and aerodynamic canards. The rear features an integrated spoiler, thin taillight strips and a diffuser-integrated bumper. Completing the exterior features of the car are the side skirts, lightweight multi-spoke alloy

wheels and scissor-type doors. Inside is a digital dashboard display, bucket seats, fourpoint racing harness and a fingerprint scanner that acts as the car’s engine start/stop function. Providing the necessary grunt is a 6.6kWH battery pack that is connected to an electric motor that cranks out 611 PS. Even with a curb weight of 1,775 kg, the Arcfox-7 can sprint from 0-96 km/h in 3 seconds before reaching a top

speed of 249 km/h. Estimated maximum range of BAIC’s electric supercar is rated at 299 km. The Arcfox-7 also has three driving modes; Economy, Comfort and Race. According to BAIC, it adjusts the ride height of the supercar accordingly. Stopping power is provided by carbon ceramic brakes, with the front axle getting six-piston callipers while the rear axle has fourpiston calipers.

CONCEPTUAL Volkswagen T-Prime Concept GTE

In a world premiere at Auto China 2016, Volkswagen debuted the T-Prime Concept GTE as a future full-size sport utility vehicle with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive

W

ith the new T-Prime Concept GTE, Volkswagen is trying to convey that it is mastering the art of range differentiation possibilities even within the individual SUV model series. On the one hand, this concept shows the contemporary VW SUV design and at the same time it takes entirely new approaches like the chrome radiator 70

MAY 2016

grille that extends across the entire width of the front end and integrates the LED headlights. With this impressive ‘face’ VW says it is creating an entirely new product sub-brand. Another identifying design feature of future Volkswagen fullsize SUVs are the opposing window and character lines. The window line begins in the hood and ends in the side window

of the D-pillar at the rear. The so-called character line, meanwhile, begins in the rear lights, slices through the rear wheel arches with a razor-sharp undercut and ends in the front wing. The two opposing lines lower the SUV’s visual centre of gravity and, as in a sports car, they form athletic muscular surfaces over the wheel arches, a clearly identifiable waist and a

highly dynamic shoulder section. The T-Prime Concept GTE is based on the Group’s modular longitudinal platform (MLB) and is slotted above the Touareg. At 199.6in in length it is actually longer than the first-generation Phaeton. Sporting

width of 78.7 in and 67.2in height it presents itself with balanced proportions. The production ready concept is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo charged four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and an electric motor integrated into that gearbox. Working in tandem, the powertrain will produce as much as 375hp and 516lb-ft of torque. On electric alone, the car will travel for up to 48km. Charging time using a standard (European) 220-volt outlet is eight hours from flat, or just two and a half hours when using a dedicated charging station than can offer at least 7.2 kW.

The technologically advanced interior is loaded with touchscreen panels, gesture control, and voice command systems. The 12in instrument panel and 15in infotainment display are housed behind one continuous, curved glass panel that’s set to preview production systems to follow as soon as next year. There’s a pair of 10.1in tablets in the back and a 9.6in display between the rear seats to adjust the climate control. Even the transmission is operated by wire from a glass scroll wheel, leaving just the pedals, stalks, and steering wheel as the only conventional controls.

CONCEPTUAL Shell Project M

Wraps came off “Project M”, a city-car concept designed by Gordon Murray and backed by Shell at Beijing

S

hell unveiled a city car concept which according to the minds behind the project has been based on the idea to create an energy-efficient city car through conventional design principles. The core idea is that it is now possible to engineer a car using cutting edge technology available today through a process of “co-engineering” whereby vehicle body, engine design and lubricants are all created together. The Shell Concept Car is a total rethink of the Gordon Murray Design T25 city car produced in 2010. The new concept is built around Gordon Murray Design’s patented iStream® platform where it combines cutting-edge lightweight technology in its construction. The car weighs just 550kg 72

MAY 2016

and is built using selected materials which have a low energy and CO2 footprint. Gordon Murray’s experiences in Formula One™ racing have been used to develop the car, particularly its crashworthiness and lightness. From a styling perspective, the Shell Concept Car offers a new take on the ‘tall and narrow’ look, and dials up the fun factor with its sporty central driving position and two passenger seats behind. The design produces an extremely novel seating arrangement allowing three people to be carried despite the car’s diminutive exterior dimensions and gives it a turning circle smaller than that of a London taxi, making it ideal for urban driving.

A number of the car’s components were created using 3D printing to accelerate the construction of this prototype vehicle. The car also uses recycled carbon fibre for its body that can be assembled for a quarter of the price of a conventional steel car and almost the entire car can be recycled at the end of its life. The car makes use of a modified version of Shell’s Drive App via a smartphone. This App provides the driver with real time feedback via an on-screen graphic which emphasizes the fact that fuel consumption is highly dependent on driver’s behaviour. Shell produced a prototype oil to improve the vehicle’s energy efficiency for this concept. Shell’s Lubricants technology team created bespoke engine oil, based

on its premium product Shell Helix Ultra with PurePlus Technology. In parallel, engine guru Osamu Goto’s group at Geo Technology optimised the three cylinder petrol engine by re-designing and optimising many of the internal engine components associated with friction. On the cold portion of the NEDC, these fluids reduced CO2 emissions by 7.1 per cent and on the combined cycle by 5.0%, compared to standard lubricants available in the UK, again highlighting the value of co-

designing engine and fluids. The Shell Concept Car was independently tested at a UK certified automotive testing facility alongside a range of other cars under comparable conditions to measure fuel economy and CO2 emissions. The car’s gasoline consumption has been measured using a range of vehicle testing protocols covering both steady state and urban driving styles. Sample test results include a steady state consumption of 2.64l/100km at 70km/h.

Formula One

N

ico Rosberg dominated the Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix after a Sochi race in which his main rivals struck trouble. Teammate Lewis Hamilton fought his way up from 10th on the grid to secure a Mercedes one-two, as Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen completed the podium. It was Rosberg’s fourth win of the season and his seventh in succession, and gives him a 43-point lead in the driver standings. Hamilton, meanwhile, believed he 74

MAY 2016

had the pace to win, but yet again saw his challenge compromised as falling water pressure obliged him to back off after he had reduced a 12.9s deficit to 7.5s between laps 23 and 36. Where the world champion at least finished second this time, however, it was another pure disaster for 2016’s other unlucky man, Sebastian Vettel. He was hit from behind by Chinese nemesis Daniil Kvyat in Turn 2 on the opening lap as he pushed the Ferrari inside Daniel Ricciardo’s sister Red

Bull. Then as Vettel appeared to slow slightly with a resulting rear puncture he was again hit from behind by Kvyat and sent spinning hard into the wall in Turn 3. The Russian was given a 10s stop-go penalty and three penalty points, but Vettel was done. Ferrari’s scant consolation came with Raikkonen’s subdued third - Ferrari’s 700th podium - in a race at which the Scuderia had expected to match Mercedes. Valtteri Bottas was strong

initially despite losing second place on the opening lap to Raikkonen; the Williams driver got that back after a safety car intervention because of Vettel’s accident and a resultant Turn 2 clash further back between Haas’s Esteban Gutierrez, the Force India of Nico Hulkenberg, Marcus Ericsson’s Sauber and Rio Haryanto’s Manor, as racing resumed on the fourth lap. But soon both Hamilton, who had jumped Massa at the restart, then Raikkonen, deposed the white car, leaving

Williams to take fourth and fifth with Bottas leading team mate Felipe Massa home. Max Verstappen looked set for a strong sixth for Toro Rosso until his Ferrari engine broke on the 34th lap, handing the position to Fernando Alonso who had made a blinding start for McLaren. The Spaniard pushed home to his first points of the season, and it was a double score for the Woking team as Jenson Button likewise opened his 2016 account with 10th place after a big fight with Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz, who incurred a 10s time penalty and two penalty points for forcing

Renault’s Jolyon Palmer off track earlier in the race. Between the two McLarens, Kevin Magnussen also made use of a great start to finish seventh and score Renault’s first 2016 points after a great drive, as Romain Grosjean put Haas back in the points after fighting off the recovering Sergio Perez. The Force India driver, after picking up a rear puncture from Ricciardo’s front wing on lap one, had cannily switched from supersoft to soft tyres under the safety car, but had to stop for fresh rubber later on when running sixth.

M

ercedes’ Nico Rosberg kept all the drama of the Shanghai Grand Prix behind him to secure his sixth successive F1 victory, winning comfortably from Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull’s Daniil Kvyat. After leading early on before suffering a puncture, Daniel Ricciardo came through to consolidate a good day for Red Bull with fourth, followed by the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen and Williams’ Felipe Massa. Lewis Hamilton, who started last for Mercedes after his qualifying woes, came through a battling afternoon which featured five pit stops to finish seventh, just ahead of the Toro Rossos of Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz. Williams’ Valtteri Bottas rounded out the top ten, with all 22 cars completing the race. 76

MAY 2016

It was Red Bull who led into Turn 1 at the start, Ricciardo getting the jump on polesitter Rosberg from P2 on the grid. On row two, however, the Ferraris made relatively poor getaways - which would lead to trouble through the opening turns. Kvyat sparked it, scything decisively down the inside of Vettel at Turn 2. Surprised, the German jinked to the left, and into the path of Raikkonen - the pair made contact, pitching Raikkonen into a half spin and forcing him to pit with damage. Vettel, meanwhile, lost ground and dropped to eighth. There were further consequences. Hamilton lost his front wing after contact with Felipe Nasr as the Sauber driver tried to avoid the melee, while Romain Grosjean damaged his Haas’s nose on the

sister Sauber of Marcus Ericsson. Further drama followed when Ricciardo’s tyre deflated on lap three, forcing him to pit and consigning the Australian - like Hamilton and Raikkonen - to fighting back for the rest of the race. The track now littered with debris, the safety car was deployed, prompting the bulk of the field to pit for fresh rubber. When the race resumed on lap eight, Rosberg headed an otherwise unlikely lead pack that featured Williams’ Felipe Massa, McLaren’s Fernando Alonso and Manor’s Pascal Wehrlein, none of whom had stopped. Rosberg was rarely troubled thereafter, but behind him the action continued at a breathless pace. Kvyat was soon into second, while by mid-distance Vettel had fought his way back into third.

Red Bull replace Kvyat with Verstappen Max Verstappen will replace Daniil Kvyat at Red Bull from the forthcoming Grand Prix in Spain onwards, with Kvyat moving back to sister team Toro Rosso. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said the switch would allow Verstappen to showcase his ‘outstanding’ talent, and also help Kvyat ‘regain his form’. The move comes just days after Kvyat was heavily criticised - by Horner included after twice coming together with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel in Russia. “Max has proven to be an outstanding young talent. His performance at Toro Rosso has been impressive so far and we are pleased to give him the opportunity to drive for Red Bull Racing,” Horner said.

Mercedes have ‘no idea’ how Hamilton dragged car home in Russia Mercedes say they still do not understand the ‘miracle’ by which Lewis Hamilton was able to get to the chequered flag in Russia, after revealing he had ‘zero’ water pressure for the last 16 laps of the Grand Prix. In an open letter on their website addressed to fans, the team also outlined how Nico Rosberg’s lead was also jeopardised by ‘alarming’ read-outs from the MGU-K, which forced the German to complete the race in a ‘safe’ mode. Mercedes conceded that both incidents highlighted how they have ‘not met your own expectations’ in terms of reliability in 2016. “We were baffled and gutted by the repeat MGU-H failure on Lewis’ car in qualifying,” Mercedes explained in reference to the Briton’s issues Kvyat kept ahead until lap 35, when - the pair having just stopped - Vettel dived down the inside at Turn 14 to snatch a second he protected until the flag. Kvyat was a close third, booking a Grand Prix podium for only the second time in his career. Red Bull’s great day was completed as Ricciardo drove a brilliantly to recover to fourth, despite being 17th at the end of lap four. After switching to medium tyres on the 37th lap he caught and passed Hamilton, Bottas and Massa, to finish only 6.7s down on his team mate. Raikkonen, too, recovered well, passing Bottas, Hamilton and Massa in the final stint to take fifth. Massa, meanwhile, was able to keep Hamilton at bay after a tense scrap.

MOTOGP

A

ustin saw ‘The Doctor’ crash out of a race for the first time in over a year and after a difficult start to the season some were wondering if he’d find his 2015 form again. But in Jerez Rossi bounced back from a crash like almost never before and took his most dominant win to date, once again silencing any doubts. Having now taken 113 wins in the World Championship, this isn’t the first time Rossi has crashed one race and won the next. Few fans will forget the infamous ‘donkey helmet’ Rossi wore for the 2009 San Marino GP. In Italy, and many other parts of the world, people who make silly mistakes are often called a donkey, 78

MAY 2016

the helmet a bit of self-deprecating humour after Rossi crashed out of the Indianapolis GP. His crash in Indy in 2009 was his first DNF since 2007 and while there was no special helmet for the Spanish GP, both Misano and Jerez witnessed an almost identical outcome as Rossi won from pole position and put himself right back in Championship contention. But in Jerez Rossi also showed off a new set of tricks. For the first time in his premier class career Rossi led every lap of a race after starting in pole position.. Once again it’s a three-way battle for the championship, Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo proving they have the pace to finish on

the podium almost every weekend and Marc Marquez showing just how much he’s grown up since 2015. Were this the Spanish GP a year ago, few would have been surprised to see Marquez fall while trying to close the impossible gap to Lorenzo and Rossi. Instead he produced a calm and mature ride, focusing on getting solid points and protecting his championship lead after a difficult race. Marquez has yet to make a mistake this season, the only rider to take to the podium in all four races. As both Lorenzo and Rossi have shown in the past, consistency wins championships not outright speed.

Repsol Honda Team rider claims fourth win at the Circuit of The Americas –his tenth on North American soil. A mistake for Dani Pedrosa takes him out of the fight for second place. Marc Marquez returns to Europe with a successful haul from the MotoGP World Championship’s American leg, following up on his win last weekend in Argentina with a victory in the USA. The Repsol Honda rider now has an amazing ten straight

victories Stateside –eight in MotoGP, and two in Moto2. Starting from pole position, Marquez took the holeshot in the race and led from the first lap to the chequered flag. His teammate, Dani Pedrosa, was unable to make it two podiums from as many weekends, but was involved in the hunt for second place. After a good start, the Spaniard moved up into fifth on the first lap, fourth by Lap 3 and was situated behind Andrea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo. However, chatter from the front end of his bike took him out of the race when braking at Turn 1 of Lap 6, also bringing down Dovizioso. With this result, Marquez tops the overall standings with 66 points and Pedrosa is fifth with 27.

Jorge Lorenzo to leave Yamaha Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. announces that its partnership with Jorge Lorenzo will be discontinued at the close of the 2016 MotoGP season, when Lorenzo will move on to new racing challenges. Since Lorenzo joined the Yamaha Factory Racing Team in 2008, they won three MotoGP World Championships (2010, 2012 and 2015), clinched 41 race wins and have been on podium 99 times out of 141 races. TOUGH TIMES BRING OUT THE MAkE-DOERS For anyone who has been in the media field for long enough, the term agency is used with the same sort of frequency as you would have in throwing out a “good morning”. Every facet of the communication world is populated by agencies and though you hear so many names of agencies there aren’t really that many different types. Or are there? As a journalist, the agency tpe that I most often interact with is the public relations agency. I’ve always wondered, why would you call yourself a public relations agency when you actually never interact with the ‘public’. The symbiotic relationship that the PR agency has is with the denizens of the media and if you really want to stretch it a bit, with the new age media of the social network. We are the tools in their handy bag, in their quest to reach out to the public. That would make them press relations agencies. So how does it go again – brand to PR agency to media to public? Is there a path in reverse? Perhaps one that involves customer workshops, surveys, mystery shopping etcetra? Yes, there are many return paths, but they all have their own specialised agencies. In this increasingly fragmented world of super-specialised agencies, we need to also pay homage to the mother of the breed – the advertising agency. It flourishes on the back of a rampantly consumer-driven economy and even manages to make in-roads into fields like government schemes, getting social messages out and publishing your financial reports. The premise here is that an agency has all the skills, talent pool and resources that individual clients and brands cannot raise without building in an unnecessary cost overload. But then, I’ve seen that most brands that really care about their ‘message’ already have the experts and resources to do so onboard. The agency is just the implementor, while helping in the creation too.

Raj Warrior is now managing editor of Automan and has been in the thick of the Automotive journalism field from the past 18 years. Want to comment or have your say? Email at raj@automan.me Identify yourself or your message will be trashed and your id blocked

Which, brings me back to the title – why use an agency if you have the folk who know what needs to be done already? Why pay them a fee or a commision for jobs that you could get done yourself? The reason I ask this is because, I’m seeing the threshold again – the point at which a challenging economic macro environment is causing managements to question the cost of doing business as usual. If you need to trim costs, would you cut corners by reducing your dependence on an external agency, often cutting them out altogether OR would you start by losing the talent that you have in the company? The business of automotive communications is a good example – to launch a car, you will need the skills to publicise your car to the broader market. Traditionally that would mean using advertising agencies and traditional media outlets including print, TV, satellite and cable as well as outdoor media like billboards and other places to shout out. But now there is the field of internet based media, social networks, mobile phone interactions and the growing area that is bundled under BTL or below-the-line communications. By the way (BTW) there are specialised agencies to handle these roles. Then let’s not leave out event management, logistics, government interaction, translation and even professional meet-and-greet agencies. I’ve seen an increasing number of automotive related events being handled by in-house teams, with these teams having to take on the duties that all these disparate agencies normally provide. It’s a good thing to see the level of dedication that a focussed team can bring into this, often with a high degree of professionalism. The danger is when this attitude of making do with what you have at hand translates into cutting corners on the deliverables. And the sad truth of the matter is that sometimes, that happens. But then, many of my recent interactions with teams that chose to go it solo have also given me a fresh perspective on the entrepreneurship that can be found in many of us. Your message may not be perfect, your path may seem a little bumpy and the final achievement may not be letter perfect the way a mega agency could deliver – but it does the job. And in the process, maybe you’ll find a future career setting up an agency of your own.
