Annual New Vehicle Affordability Study

New vehicles cost less than they did a decade ago, according to a new study that examines automobile prices from 2011 to 2021

Synergy Research, a division of the Synergy Media Group has just released their annual New Vehicle Affordability (NVA) Study which examines the affordability of new vehicles and compares that to both the inflation index and other major consumer expenditures for a ten-year period. The latest study compares 2021 vehicles with 2011 vehicles. All data is sourced from the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) Auto Prices, counting both new cars and new trucks rose 5.30 percent over the last ten years. When factoring in the overall inflation rate of 16.93% over the same ten years, in actual dollars, automobiles are significantly more affordable than they were ten years ago.

“Yet even though automobiles are cheaper in real dollars, they are light years ahead in improvements over the vehicles that were available in 2011 . There have been tremendous advancements in technology, safety and efficiency. Technology means that more connectivity and communication integration. Safety systems including ABS, Stability Control and traction control are essentially standard, and many vehicles, including even some of the least expensive vehicles, now come standard with Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, and many other active safety features. They have more airbags and those are all more advanced or smart airbags. They also have better structural integrity, so in the event that you are in an accident, new vehicles will protect you much better. And finally, efficiency is increasing, with the average vehicle getting 5 more miles per gallon according to the EPA. And lastly, the actual cost of fuel is lower, which makes it less expensive to drive.”

Synergy’s head of Research and Strategy, Stephen Fasano said “Comparing major categories of consumer spending including housing (+25.4%), food (+19.0%), health insurance (+67.5%), and education (+78.24%), So if you think the cost of new cars is too high, it automobile prices the lowest of that core group, and turns out that they’re not only better, but are even even below that of inflation.” more affordable than they were a decade ago. l

There will be both 90KW and 107KW battery versions available, with the larger rated at 478 miles on the Euro cycle, (US figures not available yet, but should be a bit lower). For performance the EQS should go from 0-60 about 4 seconds. The EQS will be available in two different versions and should be available starting this summer. Pricing has not yet been announced.

Kia EV6: Kia showcased it’s all new EV6 GT, a fully electric vehicle with some serious performance specs and technology features. The EV6 is an entirely new vehicle from Kia and is the first vehicle to be based on the new Electric Global Modular Platform (e-GMP). The GT version will have 577 horsepower and all-wheel drive will be standard. 16 INTERVIEW: DENIS ROCHEFORT Synergy Media: I’m here with Denis Rochefort, the general manager of Porsche Westwood in Westwood, Massachusetts. Denis, thanks for joining us today. Denis Rochefort: Thank you. No problem. Synergy Media: Denis, tell us about your history in the auto business. Denis Rochefort: I’ve been in the auto business for about 13 years; my father was in the business so I kind of grew up in it. I got out of grad school in 2007 and I had an Acura. I love cars, and I went to work for an Acura dealer. Then I spent some time moving around with Mercedes Benz and then got the chance in 2015 to work for Porsche of Warwick. I moved through the ranks there and eventually became the General Manager. Then last year, I was offered the opportunity as General Manager at Porsche Westwood, which is one of the biggest stores in New England. So, it’s been quite a fun transition. I really would never want Denis Rochefort: Porsche is really to leave Porsche, it’s just one of those looking towards the future of mobility brands that just does everything right. in general. They’re all about sports cars, and passion behind cars, but they’re Synergy Media: I’m sure you have also looking at mobility solutions for passionate customers with Porsche who the next generation. And battery electric love their cars and are excited every time cars are what that is. So the Taycan, it’s a redesign or new model comes out? hands down one of the most incredible cars I’ve ever driven in my life. And it Denis Rochefort: For sure, the truly takes that Porsche passion to the customers have been the best part. We next level. So we’re going to see a nice have wonderfully successful people, little split in the next decade or so where intelligent and smart people, and then Porsche is going to spend a lot of time you get everyday people that wanted a and money on the future of mobility with Porsche their whole life. And they’re here battery electric cars, and then they’re for the passion of the brand. There are also going to spend a lot of time and people from all walks of life at Porsche, effort in the classic internal combustion and everybody’s here for a good reason. engines, classic cars, race cars, etcetera. It’s generally a happy experience. So, you’re going to get the best of both worlds with Porsche. Synergy Media: It seems like it wasn’t that long ago when Porsche went from just Synergy Media: A few years ago, they producing sports cars to adding SUVs, introduced a new 911, I was lucky enough which have been hugely successful. to be at the worldwide introduction in LA. I remember the new design, and the Denis Rochefort: SUVs are the most incredible excitement about it. The whole dominant vehicle type in the world, and industry was buzzing about it, maybe in the US, aside from pickup trucks, three years ago? that’s true as well. I agree with the sentiment that, if you’ve got to sell the Denis Rochefort: It was a 2020 model, SUVs to make the money to be able to but it was in 2019 when they released, it still build the fun stuff like race cars and so two years ago. GT cars and super/hyper cars, then go for it. And the beauty is that these SUVs they Synergy Media: Is the cadence normally build are sports cars themselves. I mean, that they’ll start with a new model, and the Macan GTS is probably one of the then a GT version will follow? best all-around sports cars ever made. So it is what it is, it’s business, and they do Denis Rochefort: Each model line for it smart. They’re not overbuilding them. 911s will go about seven years. They’ll So they’re keeping to their roots and it have a .1 version and then a .2 version, affords them the ability to build the fun which is a minor up upgrade for the last stuff that we all like. two or three years. And typically, about two years in, they’ll come out with the Synergy Media: One of the big stories in GT3 version, and the following year, the last few years has been the Taycan, they’ll do a GT3 RS version. They’ll do Porsche’s entry into the electric car one version of the GT cars for each, so category. Can you tell us more about that? a .1, .2 - and they’ll typically do a GT2

or a speedster version once every generation, so once every seven or eight years. Synergy Media: So now let’s get into the GT3. What does a GT3 by itself mean in relation to a standard 911? You’ve got the Turbo which is the top of the line prior to the GT3, and then the GT3 - is it above the Turbo or just different from it? Isn’t it faster and more powerful than the Turbo? Denis Rochefort: The GT3 is the track-focused 911. So the top of the line 911 is the Turbo S coupe and cab - that car will do zero to 60 in 2.4 seconds, it does 205, 206 miles an hour at top speed, it has allwheel drive, but it’s comfortable for you to be driving around every day. The GT3 is actually not as powerful, not as fast, but it has a lot more aerodynamics. So, on a track cornering and whatnot, it is faster. So it’s really a different animal. It has a naturally aspirated engine because the GT car series, the World and European series for GT3, requires a certain type of engine, so they stick with that. But it’s really just the driver’s car. It’s not as comfortable as a Turbo to drive but it is manageable. It’s not like a full blown race car, it really is just a race car for the street. You can drive it to the track and on the track. Synergy Media: What does the RS mean when you add that to the standard GT3?

“ Porsche is really looking towards

the future of mobility in general. They’re all about sports cars, and passion behind cars, but they’re also looking at mobility solutions for the next generation. And battery electric cars are what that is.”

Denis Rochefort: RS in typical race nomenclature is the race sport; it’s the higher level of track-focused car. So with RS cars, Porsche takes the aerodynamics to the next level. Usually, the wings are extremely large for downforce at high speeds, the brakes are much bigger, the wheels are much bigger. There’s Aero inlets and outlets, brake ducts in the hood. And those cars are all PDK now, which is Porsche double clutch automatic transmission, so to get the utmost performance out of the car, Porsche will do everything they can to make sure it’s the fastest car on the track. So, you’ll never see a manual RS 911. They’ll be

PDK from now on. The last generation Every dealer has to build every Porsche, that had a manual RS was the 2011 997.2. whether it’s a base Macan or a GT3 RS. I’m never going to see that car again. It’s going to go away and go to someone else later. So we go back and forth. We have long discussions about it all the time. But I don’t think any good local client should ever have to pay a premium for a Porsche. But if somebody’s not a local client, has no real business with our dealership, wants our car, and is willing to pay market conditions? Then so be it. These cars are made for enthusiasts, they’re made to be driven, they’re not made for speculation. Every dealer has their way, but you’ve just got to navigate lightly. I don’t think it’s fair for someone who’s local and invested in the dealership to have to pay premium for a car. Synergy Media: So, Denis, when you look at the future of Porsche, it seems like, as you explained, there’s kind of two different roads that they’re taking: the battery electric path, obviously a big part of everyone’s future, and then staying pure with pure sports cars. I read recently that Porsche just had some development in the last 10 days, something about the efficiency of a normally aspirated or a combustion engine. So it seems like they’re very dedicated to that too in the future. Denis Rochefort: From what I heard, it was about a synthetic gasoline, yeah. They’re invested in the future of mobility

in general. You know - how can we sustain this this passion? How can they sustain their legacy of cars that are still on the road and still being traded? Another topic we talk about all the time at the dealership here is what’s next? When are they going to block combustion engines from driving in the cities? When is all this going to change? And then what? Porsche, luckily, is a highly profitable business, and that affords them the opportunity to spend some time researching other ways.

Synergy Media: We’d like to learn a little more about Porsche Westwood. Can you tell us more about its history? Denis Rochefort: Sure, Porsche Westwood’s latest iteration is at 411 Province highway, which is a brand-new facility that was built in 2017. So it’s been a standalone Porsche facility for about four years. And there was about four years of planning and construction prior to that. The Westwood name started in 2005, with the building across the street, where it was attached to Audi Westwood from about 2005. We were previously part of the Claire Auto Group, owned by the Clair family, and prior to that it was located in West Roxbury since the 80’s. Back then, and even into the 2000’s you had most Porsche dealers that were also Audi dealers, and often had shared showrooms and maybe one Porsche model on display. But of course, that’s all changed, and Porsche dealers have grown quite a bit, and we’re one of the biggest. Synergy Media: How long has Porsche Westwood been part of the Prime group?

I was used to before. Even the private incredible 4.9 out of five. Can you tell group before, it was a smaller group, but us about any policies or procedures it was a private group. that you’ve instilled in the store that ensure customer satisfaction? Then I went to Penske, which is a public company, and the public company Denis Rochefort: I tell my team all the atmosphere is much different. They have time that we’re not necessarily in the 300 dealerships worldwide, and seven car business or not necessarily in the other Porsche dealerships, sisters stores retail business or the service business, in the group. There’s a lot of pressure, we’re in the customer service business. and it’s just big, it’s hard to wrap your The reason why dealerships exist is for head around. Where working for Prime, customer service, especially nowadays, not only are we’re in a great spot, on the when there’s so many different ways to Automile and the middle of Mass, and get what you want. the middle of New England, I now have a really good executive team that I can Since I started as a GM, and especially work with on a day-to-day basis which I when I started here at Porsche Westwood, really like. I immediately focused on employee engagement. I really care about employee satisfaction, employee engagement, because if I can spend that effort and that time, the results will be much greater than I have a good team of people that just customer satisfaction and customer really care about Porsche care engagement. While I can’t make a few hundred or a few thousand customers all about the success of Porsche care happy, I can make 35 employees happy, about their clients, and they’re who will hopefully go out and keep as many customers happy as we can. just into the cars and car culture.

Denis Rochefort: When I got into this car business in 2007, I worked for the Claire family who owned the Acura store down the road in Walpole. And about a month into my first job in the car business, the Prime Automotive Group bought the whole Claire group. So we became part of the Prime Automotive Group in 2007. And then they bought more dealerships and They’ll see a lot of people who are merged, they became Prime Automotive engaged with cars and see us a lot Group I believe in 2018 or so. which is essentially included the group of existing more in around New England than dealerships, plus more dealerships that we were in the past.” were purchased. Now the group is owned by private equity company in New York, and for the most part, we have new executives. So even though I worked with Prime group before, it’s actually much And I also see a lot of growth and growth different dealer group than was back in opportunities in the future with this 2007, when I started, company. With a dealer group of about 40 stores, it’s pretty considerable size, Synergy Media: What do you like about the even though it’s still private. But the way working for the Prime Automotive Group? that we’re restructuring and building this company, it leaves a lot of opportunity Denis Rochefort: The beauty of being for me, especially as someone who at Porsche is that I’m right in the main has experience working with the large campus, so the CEO and CFO and a lot public group. But I also can think of it as of the VPS are right next door at Audi. working for a small, private store, too. So And a lot of them are Porsche fans. So I get the best of both worlds. they come through the store a lot and I get to see my executive often. They Synergy Media: As of today, the day work with me, and they’ve been very of this interview, your dealership has proud to see Porsche grow, and have me a 4.6 rating on Google out of five. on board. It’s much different than what And on Facebook reviews, it’s an

We all know that one bad customer will go out and fire off a lot of bad reviews on the internet and give us bad ratings here and there. But for the most part, it’s just that everybody here knows that it’s customer happiness we’re concentrated on. I don’t believe anyone should make buying a Porsche a negative experience. We work with the guys and the girls and the team to, to make sure everything is positive, and everything moves forward.

Now, it’s not to say the customer is always right. I look after my team, because it goes both ways. We do everything we can to make sure customers are happy and satisfied and get what they want. And they have a good experience. But if ever turns wrong, and the customers go the other way, I’ll protect my sales team or my employees. So I think it’s really more than just customer satisfaction, it’s really the dichotomy of customer satisfaction, and employee satisfaction. And they go hand in hand.

19 INTERVIEW: DENIS ROCHEFORT

“ Since I started as a GM, and

especially when I started here at Porsche Westwood, I immediately focused on employee engagement. I really care about employee satisfaction, employee engagement, because if I can spend that effort and that time, the results will be much greater than just customer satisfaction and customer engagement.”

So I’ve just been good at balancing that, and the team knows that I look after them, and I back them up and give them all the support, they need to take care of their clients. And then, as far as reviews, we have a 99 on our CSI out of 100 right now for the whole quarter because we do everything we can to give the customer a good experience, and that helps with the reviews we receive. And giving us a fivestar review is always something that they can do for us that that helps. As far as specific things, I hired a customer experience manager whose sole job is to ensure the customer experience is a good one. He does everything for making sure unhappy clients get taken care of to making sure the bathrooms have nice soap and flowers in them, and he’s really good. He’s been with the dealership for years. So, he really knows what to do. And he puts a lot of pride in making sure we have a good environment for our clients. We also hired a delivery specialist so that all of our customers take delivery of a car, while they have their salesperson, they also have a delivery specialist to work with, who goes over the car, and we do a “reveal presentation” in our delivery bay where we cover the car and do a do a real reveal, with the red carpet around the side. So it’s the little things like that too. But really, it’s just it’s the employees when it comes down to it, I could do whatever I want to put those things into place or processes into practice. But if the employees aren’t engaged, then they’re not going to do it. And right now, we’ve got a really good team here. Synergy Media: Is there anything else you’d like people to know about your dealership? Denis Rochefort: Porsche Westwood has always had a great reputation. I know all the Porsche dealers in New

England, and I know all the all the General Managers and a lot of the other managers and employees and reputations. I think people would be surprised to know how engaged a lot of our team members are in Porsche and just being passionate about the cars and car events, and racing and track events etcetera. Our GSM has been here for 22 years. So that whole history of Porsche Westwood, going back to West Roxbury. We’ve had a manager who’s been here for the whole ride. And people know him. And there’s always a familiar face in this dealership. And along with that, he’s very passionate about cars, he’s passionate about racing. I think a lot of customers, or even Porsche enthusiasts, if they knew how dedicated a lot of our employees were to Porsche brand outside of just our Porsche dealership, I think they’d be surprised, and we’re only going to be pushing that more. I’m probably one of the first General Managers in this store over the years, who’s been truly passionate about Porsche. So, bringing that renewed enthusiasm to this store in such a great central location in New England, it’s going to be really good for

APRIL 2021

the dealership. And we’re growing, so it’s only going to get better. We have a brand-new facility, that everyone can see, but I think they might not know the people inside yet. And we’ve really assembled a great team here. So I think that’s the one thing that people should know, that we’re not just here for the paycheck, we’re here because this is what we love to do. We come to work every day, because we love Porsche, I asked that question to all my employees: “Why do you come to work every day at Porsche Westwood, you could go anywhere, and you could, you could work anywhere?” And they got to really think about, and I think over the last nine months of me being here, we’ve kind of teased out the people that maybe didn’t want to be here. So now I have a good team of people that really care about Porsche care about the success of Porsche care about their clients, and they’re just into the cars and car culture. They’ll see a lot of people who are engaged with cars and see us a lot more in around New England than we were in the past. l
