Following the remarkable 2016 Chiron, which boasted 1,479 horsepower and 1,180 lb-ft of torque, the Tourbillon has big shoes to fill. The Chiron itself was an evolution from the iconic Veyron, known for its speed and luxury. However, the Tourbillon sets a new standard with a plug-in hybrid system, combining a new V-16 combustion engine with three electric motors, producing a staggering 1,800 horsepower. This powertrain allows the Tourbillon to reach speeds surpassing 275 mph, embodying the ultimate blend of performance and luxury.
The Bugatti Tourbillon’s power comes from a unique combination of a newly developed 8.3-liter V-16 engine, engineered in partnership with Cosworth, and three carbon-sleeved permanent-magnet motors. The front motors each generate 335 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque, while the rear motor matches these specs. The engine alone produces 986 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid system is anchored by a T-shaped 24.8-kWh battery pack that runs down the car’s spine, where the driveshaft would typically be. This battery
pack doubles as a structural member, enhancing the car’s rigidity and safety. The CCS-capable battery can recharge from empty to 80 percent in about 12 minutes, peaking at just over 80 kW, ensuring that the Tourbillon is not only fast on the road but also quick to recharge.

Mate Rimac, the visionary behind Bugatti-Rimac, insisted that emotion should not be sacrificed for progress. The Tourbillon embodies this philosophy, blending the raw power and sound of a V-16 engine with the precision and
efficiency of electric motors. The result is a hypercar that not only performs at the highest levels but also delivers a driving experience filled with passion and excitement.
The Tourbillon’s 8.3-liter naturally aspirated 90-degree V-16 engine, developed with Cosworth, was chosen for its combination of power, sound, and simplicity compared to the previous W-16. Bugatti engineered both flat-plane and cross-plane crank versions of the engine, ultimately deciding on a cross-plane version with a 3-plus-foot-long crankshaft for better performance and sound as it races to its 9,000-rpm redline. This engine is paired with a new eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which works seamlessly with the rear electric motor.
Bugatti has made a concerted effort to make the Tourbillon a better handler without sacrificing its GT-like abilities. The new carbon-fiber monocoque chassis is supported by a Formula 1–inspired exposed carbon-ceramic rear diffuser and a carbon-composite 3D-printed front end. These structures fit around the powertrain’s radiators and front motors while still allowing for a small frunk equal in size and shape to the Chiron’s.
The Tourbillon’s dual-valve electronically adjustable suspension features front and rear multilinks with additive-manufactured aluminum A-arms at all four corners. Massive eight-piston front brakes and six-piston rears, operated by-wire for the first time in a Bugatti, provide unparalleled stopping power, while the active rear spoiler assists braking by tipping into the air at a 55-degree angle.
On the software front, the Tourbillon benefits from advanced traction control and torque-vectoring systems developed by the Rimac team. A variety of drive modes, including a Top Speed mode necessitating an intricate metal V-16-shaped key, are also in the works, ensuring the Tourbillon can adapt to various driving conditions and preferences.
The interior design team aimed to produce a timeless experience, avoiding screen inflation. In front of the driver sits a fixed-hub steering wheel that rotates around a hidden collar on the steering shaft, keeping the Bugatti logo permanently upright.
Behind the wheel are three mechanical gauges created by a private label Swiss company that builds high-end watches. These gauges, featuring exposed, finely meshed gears behind sapphire
glass, display vital information such as oil and coolant temperature, fuel level, state of charge, speed, and power. The sole screens in the new Bugatti are a small multifunction display beneath the speedometer and a small screen that pops up from the top of the machined and crystal glass-outfitted center stack. The rest of the cabin is adorned with rich stitched leather and carbon fiber, creating an environment that is both luxurious and driver-focused.
