Anchor Toffee

Crafting Sweet Success in Providence, RI

Anchor Toffee in Providence is a local treasure that has quickly become synonymous with artisanal confections and community spirit. What started as a humble endeavor has grown into a thriving business, beloved by locals and visitors alike. At the helm of this sweet operation is Peter Kelly and his wife and partner Katie. Their passion for their craft is evident in every bite of their delicious toffee.

The Birth of a Sweet Idea

The story of Anchor Toffee begins like many great ventures—with a love for creating something special. Peter Kelly, inspired by a family recipe and a shared passion for sweets, decided to take a leap of faith and turn his culinary hobby into a business. What sets Anchor Toffee apart from other confections is not just the quality of ingredients or the meticulous process, but the heart and soul poured into every batch.

The journey wasn’t without its challenges. As Peter Kelly recalled during our interview, the early

days were filled with late nights, countless hours spent perfecting recipes, and a steep learning curve in the world of small business. Yet, it was his commitment to excellence and unwavering belief in his product that fueled his perseverance.

The Art of Toffee Making

Anchor Toffee is renowned for its rich, buttery toffee, a treat that has garnered a loyal following across Rhode Island. The secret to their success lies in the simplicity of their ingredients and the complexity of their process. Each batch of toffee is handcrafted using the finest local ingredients, from the rich butter to the premium chocolate that coats each piece.

Peter Kelly takes great pride in the process, which remains largely traditional, ensuring that every piece of toffee is made with the same care and attention to detail that inspired the business’s inception. The result is a product that is not only delicious but also a testament to the art of

confectionery making.

“We wanted to create something that reminded people of home,” said Kelly. “Something that was comforting and familiar, but also had a touch of sophistication. That’s what we aim to do with every piece of toffee we make.”

A Community Staple

Anchor Toffee is more than just a business; it’s a part of the Providence community. Peter Kelly is committed to supporting local causes and often participates in community events and fundraisers. He believes that his success is deeply intertwined with the support of the community, and

he makes it a point to give back whenever possible.

This commitment to community extends to business practices as well. Anchor Toffee sources as many ingredients as possible from local suppliers, ensuring that they not only support other local businesses but also maintain the highest quality in their products. It’s a philosophy that resonates with their customers, who appreciate the brand’s dedication to both quality and community.

Expansion and Growth

As Anchor Toffee’s popularity has grown, so too has the business. What began as a small operation

Anchor Toffee is more than just a business; it’s a part of the Providence community.

has expanded into a fullfledged production facility, allowing Kelly to keep up with increasing demand while maintaining his high standards. Despite this growth, Kelly remains committed to his original vision—producing smallbatch, artisanal toffee that never compromises on quality.

Their success has not gone unnoticed. Anchor Toffee has been featured in local and regional publications, and their products are now available in several retail locations across Rhode Island and beyond. Yet, despite this growth, Peter Kelly remains humble and focused on what he does best—making exceptional toffee.

“We’ve been so fortunate to have such incredible support from our customers and the community,” Kelly shared.

“It’s what keeps us going, and it’s what drives us to keep improving and growing.”

The Future of Anchor Toffee

Looking ahead, the future is bright for Anchor Toffee. Peter Kelly has plans to expand their product line, introducing new flavors and confections while staying true to the quality and craftsmanship that have become their hallmark. He is

also exploring new markets, with the hope of bringing his beloved toffee to an even wider audience.

Yet, no matter how much they grow, Kelly is determined to keep Anchor Toffee grounded in the values that have guided him from the start—quality, community,

and a deep love for what he does.

“Our goal is to keep making people happy with our toffee,” Kelly said. “As long as we’re doing that, we know we’re on the right track.”

Discover History

THE GILDED AGE COMES HOME

RHODE ISLAND'S ICONIC MANSIONS ON SCREEN

"The Gilded Age," created by Julian Fellowes, the mastermind behind "Downton Abbey," is a lavish period drama set in the late 19th century, exploring the opulent lives of New York’s elite during a time of rapid economic growth and social change in America. While the series primarily takes place in New York City, its connection to Rhode Island is both deep and significant, reflecting the state’s historical ties to the era's wealth and grandeur.

The Rhode Island Connection

One of the most notable connections between "The Gilded Age" and Rhode Island is its depiction of the era’s "summer cottages"— opulent mansions in Newport, which were the seasonal homes of some of America’s wealthiest families. During the Gilded Age, Newport became a playground for the rich, where families like the Vanderbilts, Astors, and others built extravagant homes that were far from the modest “cottages” they were whimsically called. These mansions were designed to showcase wealth and social standing, and they played host to some of the most lavish social events of the time.

Filming in Newport

"The Gilded Age" chose Newport, Rhode Island, as a key filming location, taking full advantage of the city's preserved Gilded Age architecture. Several scenes in the series were shot at famous Newport mansions such as The Breakers, Marble House, and The Elms—each of which stands as great examples of the excesses of the period.

• The Breakers, perhaps the most famous of the Newport mansions, was the summer home of Cornelius Vanderbilt II. Its grand halls, sweeping staircases, and intricate details provided the perfect backdrop for the

series' depiction of the era's opulence.

• Marble House, another Vanderbilt mansion, built by William K. Vanderbilt as a birthday gift for his wife, Alva, is an architectural marvel inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles. Its gilded rooms and lavish decor are emblematic of the era's taste for European grandeur, making it an ideal setting for scenes in "The Gilded Age."

• The Elms, the summer residence of coal baron Edward Julius Berwind, is another Newport mansion featured in the series. The Elms is renowned for its classical French architecture and beautifully

landscaped gardens, offering a window into the lives of America’s elite during the late 19th century.

Rhode Island's Role in the Gilded Age

The Gilded Age was a period of unprecedented economic growth in America, marked by the rise of industrialists and financiers whose wealth often overshadowed that of European aristocracy. Rhode Island, particularly Newport, was central to this era. The state became synonymous with luxury, leisure, and social power, as the country’s wealthiest families spent their summers in Newport, attending lavish parties and engaging in the social rituals

that defined the upper class.

The mansions of Newport, many of which are preserved as museums today, offer a glimpse into this world of excess. These homes were places of residence but more importantly, they were symbols of status, where the architecture, art collections, and interior designs were all intended to display the immense wealth and power of their owners.

Cultural Legacy

"The Gilded Age" effectively brings this period back to life, with Rhode Island's historical landmarks playing a starring role. The series doesn’t just tell a story of New York’s elite but

also underscores the significance of Newport as a social hub during this transformative time in American history. For viewers, this connection serves as both a historical reminder and a visual feast, showcasing the architectural and cultural heritage that continues to draw visitors to Rhode Island today.

In many ways, "The Gilded Age" is a celebration of Rhode Island’s role in American history, highlighting how the state was—and still is—synonymous with the glamour and grandeur of an era defined by its extremes.
