THROUGH TIME
A JOURNEY
FloridaRob Steele and the Historical Society of Martin County
In the serene town of Stuart, Florida, Rob Steele has found a home that resonates deeply with his passion for history and community. As the President and CEO of the Historical Society of Martin County, Steele oversees the Elliott Museum and the Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge, two historical landmarks that play a crucial role in preserving and celebrating the region's rich heritage.
DISCOVERING STUART AND ITS RICH HISTORY
Rob Steele’s journey to Stuart began five years ago when he first visited the Elliott Museum on Hutchinson Island. “I realized this was a place I'd like to be,” Steele recalls. Stuart's less developed, quieter, and calmer nature stood out to him, offering a stark contrast to the bustling locales of Florida. This quaint charm and the strong, collaborative arts and culture community in Stuart drew Steele in, and he has been dedicated to enriching the cultural landscape ever since.
THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF MARTIN COUNTY: A LEGACY OF PRESERVATION
The Historical Society of Martin County was established in 1955, initially to care for the House of Refuge Museum on Hutchinson Island. This institution, dating back to 1876, provided crucial shelter to shipwrecked sailors. Over the years, the society expanded its mission, taking over the Elliott Museum in 1961, which was built in honor of Sterling Elliott by his son, Harmon Elliott. The museum started as a 15,000-square-foot building and has since grown to a 50,000-square-foot stateof-the-art facility, thanks to extensive renovations completed in 2013.
THE ELLIOTT MUSEUM: A HUB OF ACTIVITY
The Elliott Museum is more than just a repository of historical artifacts; it is a vibrant cultural center that engages the community through a variety of dynamic exhibits and events. “We try and structure ourselves to be the barn that the community dances in,” Steele explains. The museum’s extensive car collection, including over 100 vehicles and a unique rotating display known as the
Boomerang, draws automotive enthusiasts from all over. However, cars are just one aspect of the museum's diverse offerings. At least 30% of the museum’s space is dedicated to art, featuring local, touring, and international exhibits. The museum's schedule is packed with a constantly rotating selection of exhibits, ensuring that visitors always find something new and exciting. Highlights have included a record-breaking King Tut exhibit and a Norman Rockwell exhibit that captivated visitors by connecting them to the past in a deeply personal way.
THE HOUSE OF REFUGE: A HISTORICAL LANDMARK
Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge, the oldest building in Martin County, offers a unique glimpse into the past. Established as one of ten houses of refuge built in Florida in the late 1800s, it served as a sanctuary for shipwrecked sailors. Over the years, it has functioned as a Coast Guard station, a U.S. Navy outpost, and a turtle rescue station. Today, it stands as a museum under the Historical Society's care, offering guided tours and showcasing the area's maritime history.
ENGAGING THE COMMUNITY
The Historical Society of Martin County is deeply committed to community engagement. The Elliott Museum and the House of Refuge host a wide array of events, from weddings and lectures to paranormal investigations and music performances. Every Wednesday, the museum's parking lot becomes a vibrant space for a "come as you are" car show, attracting local car enthusiasts. In collaboration with the Atlantic Classical Orchestra, the museum also offers a chamber music series in the spring. This eclectic mix of events ensures that there is always something for everyone, fostering a sense of community and shared cultural experience.
A DESTINATION FOR ALL
Located just across the second bridge on Hutchinson Island, both the Elliott Museum and the House of Refuge are easily accessible and offer a perfect day trip for locals and visitors alike. The museum’s close proximity to Stuart Beach allows visitors to combine a cultural excursion with a relaxing day by the ocean. A tiki restaurant nearby provides a convenient spot for lunch or dinner, making it an ideal outing.
The success of the Historical Society of Martin County is a testament to the dedicated staff and volunteers who create a welcoming and enriching environment for all who visit. “Our goal is to touch hearts and uplift spirits,” Steele says. The society’s efforts to preserve and celebrate local history ensure that Stuart remains a vibrant and culturally rich community.
VISIT AND LEARN MORE
For those interested in exploring the rich history of Stuart, the Elliott Museum and the House of Refuge offer a wealth of experiences. The Elliott Museum is open from 10 AM to 5 PM, seven days a week, and the House of Refuge from 10 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Saturday, and 1 PM to 4 PM on Sundays. For more information, visit their website at hsmc-fl.com or call 772-225-1961. Whether you are a history buff, an art lover, or simply looking for a unique outing, the Historical Society of Martin County promises an unforgettable journey through time.

Christopher Vitale and THE OLD COLORADO INN
Preserving History and Hospitality in Stuart, Florida
The Old Colorado Inn stands as a testament to the town's rich history and enduring charm. The Vitale family has transformed this historic property into a beloved boutique hotel, blending the old with the new to offer guests a unique and welcoming experience.
A Legacy of History
The Old Colorado Inn dates back to 1914, coinciding with the founding of Stuart. Originally known as The Coventry Hotel, it served as a hotel and apartment complex before eventually transitioning to solely apartment units. In 2007, Christopher Vitale’s parents acquired the property, marking the beginning of a significant restoration journey. “My family’s goal was to preserve the historic charm while bringing the property up to date,” Christopher explains. This effort culminated in the reopening of the hotel in 2011.
Restoring and Expanding
to their new venture. His father, a real estate attorney and realtor, had been investing in local properties since moving to Florida. “The 2008 financial crisis was a turning point,” Christopher recalls. “With the downturn in real estate, my father decided to revive the hotel as a lodging establishment.” This decision proved to be fortuitous, setting the stage for the Inn’s success.
"THE OLD COLORADO INN STANDS AS A TESTAMENT TO THE TOWN'S RICH HISTORY AND ENDURING CHARM."
The initial reopening featured just six rooms in the main building. Recognizing the hotel’s immediate success, the family began expanding, adding more rooms and acquiring historic cottages and houses. “We’ve collected seven cottages and houses, some dating back to 1890,” Christopher notes. These additional accommodations have become integral to the hotel’s unique offering, each room and cottage exuding its own distinct historical character.
Family Roots and Real Estate Expertise
Christopher’s parents, originally from Staten Island, New York, brought a wealth of real estate experience
Overcoming Challenges
The journey hasn’t been without its challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic posed a significant obstacle, temporarily halting operations. “We used the downtime for deep cleaning and preservation,” says Christopher. The Inn adapted by offering long-term rentals to stay afloat during the difficult period. By 2021, the hotel rebounded strongly, benefiting from a surge in tourism as people sought new travel experiences post-lockdown.
A Unique Guest Experience
What sets The Old Colorado Inn apart is its blend of historical charm and personalized hospitality. The Vitale family’s dedication to preserving original architectural elements, such as Dade County pine hardwood floors and antique wood ceilings, adds to the Inn’s unique appeal. “Our mission is to welcome guests like family,” Christopher emphasizes. This commitment to hospitality has fostered a loyal clientele, many of whom return year after year.
Expanding the Legacy
As the Inn grew, the Vitales undertook ambitious projects to preserve historic structures. They relocated several houses to their property, saving them from demolition. “Moving houses is a challenging but rewarding process,”
Christopher explains. One notable project involved moving a large, two-story house via barge along the river. “We preserved everything except the chimney,” he recalls, highlighting the meticulous care taken to maintain the house’s integrity.
A Hub for Events and Gatherings
While The Old Colorado Inn primarily functions as a lodging property, it plays a significant role in hosting guests for local events. The Inn’s “Family Reunion Compound,” consisting of four houses around a pool and courtyard, offers a perfect setting for large family gatherings. “The compound can accommodate up to 31 adults and provides a private, exclusive experience,” Christopher notes. This unique offering has made the Inn a popular choice for family reunions and group stays.
Embracing the Community
Christopher Vitale’s love for Stuart is evident. Having lived there his entire life, he appreciates the town’s blend of historic
charm and modern amenities. “Stuart’s coastal, relaxed atmosphere and historic elements make it special,” he says. The vibrant downtown district, with its restaurants, boutique shops, and frequent events, adds to the town’s appeal. “Every weekend there’s something happening, from concerts to farmers markets,” he enthuses.
A Bright Future
Looking ahead, The Old Colorado Inn continues to thrive, offering guests a unique blend of history, charm, and exceptional hospitality.
The Vitale family’s dedication to preserving Stuart’s heritage while providing top-notch service ensures that this historic gem remains a beloved destination for years to come.
For those seeking a memorable stay in a beautiful, historic setting, The Old Colorado Inn offers an experience like no other. Its combination of rich history, personalized service, and a prime location in the heart of Stuart makes it a standout choice for visitors looking to explore and enjoy the Treasure Coast.

The Boating Capital and Sailfish Capital of the World
STUART, FLORIDA
Stuart, Florida, is a town where the rhythm of life is set by the ebb and flow of the tides. Nestled along Florida’s Treasure Coast, Stuart’s connection to the water is not just a feature of its geography but a fundamental part of its identity. It’s no wonder that this charming coastal town has earned the title of “The Boating Capital” and is also renowned as the “Sailfish Capital of the World.” But what makes Stuart so special, and why is it the ultimate destination for boating and fishing enthusiasts? Let’s dive into the heart of Stuart’s nautical culture.
Boating Paradise
Stuart is more than just a pretty face with scenic waterfronts; it’s a haven for boaters. The town’s prime location at the confluence of the St. Lucie River, the Indian River Lagoon, and the Atlantic Ocean makes it a gateway to endless water-based adventures. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor, a
passionate angler, or simply someone who loves being out on the water, Stuart offers something for everyone.
One of the reasons Stuart is so beloved by boaters is its extensive network of marinas. The town is home to a variety of marinas, ranging from small, quaint spots perfect for a quiet day on the water to large, full-service facilities equipped to handle everything from yachts to sport fishing boats. Popular marinas like Sunset Bay Marina, Sailfish Marina, and Pirate’s Cove Resort & Marina offer top-notch amenities, making them ideal spots for both locals and visitors to dock their boats and enjoy a day or a weekend on the water.
Boating events are also a staple of life in Stuart. The annual Stuart Boat Show is a highlight, drawing thousands of boating enthusiasts from across the country. This event showcases the latest in marine technology,
from luxury yachts to fishing boats, and offers everything from boat demonstrations to informative seminars. For those looking to buy, sell, or simply admire boats, the Stuart Boat Show is an unmissable event.
The Sailfish Capital of the World
Beyond its general love for boating, Stuart holds a prestigious title that sets it apart: the Sailfish Capital of the World. This title isn’t just a catchy nickname; it refers to the town’s rich fishing heritage and the exceptional conditions that make it a prime spot for sailfishing.
The waters off the coast of Stuart are teeming with sailfish, especially during the peak season from November to March. This abundance is largely due to the unique underwater geography off the Treasure Coast, where the warm Gulf Stream currents meet the cooler coastal waters. This creates an ideal environment for baitfish, which in turn attracts large numbers of sailfish.
Fishing in Stuart is an experience like no other. The thrill of battling a sailfish, known for its speed and acrobatic leaps, is a draw for anglers from all over the world. Stuart’s charter fishing industry is robust, with experienced captains and well-equipped boats ready to take both novice and experienced anglers out for a day of unforgettable fishing. The Stuart Sailfish Club, one of the oldest sport fishing clubs in the country, further cements the town’s status as a premier fishing destination. The club hosts the annual Light Tackle Sailfish Tournament, a prestigious event that attracts top anglers to test their skills in these rich waters.
But why the sailfish? Sailfish are considered by many to be the ultimate game fish. They are not only fast, reaching speeds of up to 68 miles per hour, but they also put up a spectacular fight when hooked. Their iconic sail-like dorsal fin and vibrant blue color add to their allure, making them a prized catch. "WHAT STARTED AS A SIMPLE BACKYARD GAME HAS NOW EVOLVED INTO A SPORT WITH OVER 4.8 MILLION PLAYERS IN THE UNITED STATES ALONE..."
PICKLEBALL
HOW THIS TRENDING SPORT MADE ITS WAY TO STUART
Pickleball, a sport that has seen a meteoric rise in popularity over the last decade, is quickly becoming a favorite pastime in Stuart, Florida, and the surrounding areas. This game, which combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, is loved for its accessibility, simplicity, and the fun it offers players of all ages and skill levels.
The History of Pickleball
Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by three dads—Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum— looking to create a new game to entertain their families. With a badminton court and no available rackets, they improvised with ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball. The game was named after the Pritchard family dog, Pickles, who would chase after the ball and run off with it.
What started as a simple backyard game has now evolved into a sport with over 4.8 million players in the United States alone, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association. The growth of pickleball has been particularly notable in the last few years, with courts popping up in parks, community centers, and country clubs across the country. Its rapid growth is attributed to the game's social nature, its low barrier to entry, and the fact that it provides a good workout without the intensity of some other sports.
The Rise of Pickleball in Stuart, Florida
Stuart, a small coastal town in Florida, has not been immune to the pickleball craze. The town and its surrounding areas offer several great
venues for both newcomers and seasoned players to enjoy the game.
1. YMCA of the Treasure Coast
The YMCA of the Treasure Coast is a hub for indoor pickleball. Located at 1700 SE Monterey Rd, Stuart, FL, this facility boasts two indoor pickleball courts that are fully equipped and accessible. The courts are wellmaintained, and the facility offers additional amenities such as restrooms and food services. Membership is required, but it's an ideal spot for those who prefer to play in a controlled environment.
2. Langford Park
For those who prefer outdoor play, Langford Park is an excellent choice. Situated near Stuart, Langford Park offers four outdoor pickleball courts with permanent nets and lines. The courts are set in a beautiful park, providing a great atmosphere for casual games or more competitive matches.
3. Justin Wilson Memorial Park
Another outdoor option is Justin Wilson Memorial Park, which also has four courts dedicated to pickleball. Like Langford Park, these courts are well-maintained with permanent lines and nets, making it easy for players to get a game going at any time.
4. Stuart Yacht & Country Club
If you're looking for a more exclusive setting, the Stuart Yacht & Country Club might be
the perfect place. This private club features two permanent pickleball courts, offering a more secluded and community-oriented environment for play. Membership is typically required, but the facilities and atmosphere make it worthwhile.
5. Halpatiokee Regional Park
Halpatiokee Regional Park is another fantastic venue in the Stuart area. Known for its extensive outdoor recreational activities, this park also offers pickleball courts. It's a perfect spot for those who enjoy combining their love of nature with their passion for pickleball. The park's expansive green spaces and beautiful surroundings provide an excellent backdrop for a day of play.
Why Pickleball?
The appeal of pickleball lies in its simplicity and inclusivity. It’s a sport that can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of age or fitness level. The smaller court size and slower pace compared to tennis make it more accessible, while still providing a good cardiovascular workout.
Additionally, pickleball has a strong social component. It’s common for players to meet up in the mornings or evenings, making it as much a social activity as it is a sport. This aspect of the game has helped build a strong sense of community among players, contributing to its rapid growth.
As pickleball continues to grow in popularity, Stuart, Florida, and its neighboring communities are becoming prime locations for the sport. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a complete beginner, there’s a court waiting for you. With several great venues to choose from, there’s no better time to grab a paddle and join in on the fun. Whether you prefer the indoor courts at the YMCA or the outdoor facilities at Langford Park or Halpatiokee Regional Park, you’ll find a welcoming community and a great game waiting for you.
"WHETHER YOU'RE A SEASONED PLAYER OR A COMPLETE BEGINNER, THERE'S A COURT WAITING FOR YOU."
LA GRANDE MARTIER
Lisa Councilman and A Historic
Gem in Stuart, Florida
Discover Lifestyle
LaGrande Martier stands as a vibrant testament to history, blending rich architectural heritage with the lively ambiance of a modern dining and event venue. Lisa Councilman, the current owner of this historical treasure, has passionately preserved its unique charm while inviting visitors to step back in time and experience the allure of the early 20th century.
A Storied Past
La Grande Martier was built in 1919, designed in the French Mediterranean Revival style. This architectural choice was influenced by the desire to evoke the charm of European cities like Venice and Paris. "The building was meant to be the most modern and majestic post office in America," Lisa explains. Its design included a promenade lined with post office boxes, allowing 24/7 access to mail, a significant convenience at the time.
The building’s history is intertwined with the Prohibition era. Initially designed before Prohibition, the bar within La Grande Martier transformed into a speakeasy in 1920. Behind a velvet curtain, patrons found a hidden world where they could enjoy a drink, thanks to the infamous Rum Runner Bill McCoy. "The term 'the real McCoy' originated right here in Stuart," Lisa notes, highlighting McCoy’s reputation for delivering unadulterated liquor.
Architectural Marvels and Historical Relics
The building's architectural features are a marvel in themselves. The original Miami Dade pine ceilings and clay tiles have been meticulously preserved, showcasing the craftsmanship of the era. The post office also housed a vault, now a wine vault, designed to protect gold-backed paper money from notorious bank robbers like the Ashley Gang. "The vault is 24 inches of solid steel encased in cinderblock," Lisa points out, emphasizing its historical significance.
A Journey Through Time
The promenade area, once a bustling hub for receiving and sending mail, now serves as a testament to the building’s multifunctional past. "This room was the library," Lisa says, pointing to an area where ladders once reached high shelves of books. The French terrace, reminiscent of Parisian streets, housed the town's first entrepreneur's store, selling homemade jams, jellies, and honey.
Ghostly Tales and Family Heritage
"VISITORS TO LA GRANDE MARTIER CAN EXPECT NOT ONLY A DELIGHTFUL DINING EXPERIENCE BUT ALSO A CAPTIVATING JOURNEY THROUGH TIME."
La Grande Martier is not just a historical site; it’s also reputed to be home to a couple of friendly ghosts. Lisa recounts stories of Letty, a former entrepreneur who now mischievously breaks expensive items like air conditioners and walkin coolers. Another spirit, Laura, the matriarch of the Ashley Gang, adds a touch of "hanky panky" by causing minor mischief, ensuring that the lively spirit of the past remains present. Lisa believes these ghosts support the family-operated, woman-owned business. "They were successful early entrepreneurs here in Stuart," she says. The sense of continuity and respect for history is palpable, making La Grande Martier a living museum of sorts.
Community and Events
Visitors to La Grande Martier can embark on a historical journey, starting with the speakeasy behind the post office boxes. This secret bar, complete with a two-way mirror for screening patrons, captures the clandestine spirit of the Prohibition era. Lisa shares fascinating anecdotes about Bill McCoy, who supplied fine liquor to the speakeasy, and the ingenious methods used to transport and hide the contraband.
Today, La Grande Martier is a dynamic venue for events, blending its historical essence with modern amenities. It features a 5700-square-foot space supported by an original fire extinguisher sprinkler system, the first of its kind in Stuart. The venue hosts live music most days during the season, with performances on a 125th-anniversary baby grand piano adorned with 24-karat gold. The breezeway bar is another highlight, designed to capture the natural breeze from the river, providing a cool, naturally air-conditioned space. This architectural ingenuity reflects the building’s thoughtful design and its adaptation to the Florida climate.
Preserving and Celebrating History
Lisa Councilman's dedication to preserving La Grande Martier's historical integrity while adapting it for contemporary use is evident in every corner of the building. From the original floors and tiles to the carefully restored ceilings, La Grande Martier is a celebration of Stuart’s rich history and architectural heritage.
Visitors to La Grande Martier can expect not only a delightful dining experience but also a captivating journey through time. Whether enjoying a prohibition-era cocktail in the speakeasy or attending a live music event, the venue offers a unique blend of history, culture, and entertainment.
La Grande Martier, under Lisa’s stewardship, continues to be a cherished landmark in Stuart, Florida, inviting guests to revel in its storied past while creating new memories in a setting that honors its historical roots.

NAVIGATING THE WATERS OF STUART WITH TREASURE COAST RIVER CRUISES
with Captain Bill and Caroline
In the picturesque town of Stuart, Florida, Captain Bill and his wife Caroline Westervelt have established Treasure Coast River Cruises, offering an immersive and memorable experience on the water. With a rich history of boating and a deep love for the area, they have created a business that not only showcases the natural beauty of Stuart but also offers a personal touch that keeps customers coming back.
A Passion for the Water
Capt. Bill has "saltwater in his veins" - he grew up spending every spare moment boating and fishing, so he cherishes Stuart's year-round access to temperate waters. "I've lived here longer than anywhere else and have no intentions of leaving," he says. In 2019, after leaving his previous career and with the support of Caroline, they founded Treasure Coast River Cruises. Despite the initial challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, they persevered and transformed their business model to offer private sightseeing trips, which quickly became a hit.
A Unique Experience in Stuart
Treasure Coast River Cruises started with a small sixpassenger pontoon boat, and due to its popularity, they have since expanded their fleet to include a larger Coast Guard-certified vessel named Sweet Caroline, accommodating up to 12 passengers. "Our
goal was always to share what we love about the area, not just as an attraction but as an experience," says Bill. The diverse waterways of Stuart offer everything from the pristine waters of the Stuart Sandbar to the old Florida charm of the spoil islands, complete with alligators and Spanish moss.
"FOR THOSE LOOKING TO EXPLORE STUART FROM THE WATER, TREASURE COAST RIVER CRUISES OFFERS AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE."
Diverse Offerings
The company offers a variety of cruises, both public and private. Year round public cruises include the popular weekend sunset cruises, as well as seasonal offerings, like trips to the St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park tour. "We worked with the Florida Parks Department to start offering this trip, and it's been a great addition to our calendar," says Caroline. Private cruises can be customized to the customers' preferences, whether it's a relaxing day at the sandbar, a scenic tour of the St. Lucie River, or a personalized charter.
A Personal Touch
Captain Bill and Caroline's dedication to customer service sets them apart. "We treat every group like they were friends visiting us," says Bill. This philosophy has helped them build strong relationships with their customers, many of whom return for multiple trips. "We have a fantastic customer base that comes back whenever they're in town," adds Caroline. Their flexibility in accommodating special requests, such as adjusting pick-up times or customizing the itinerary, further enhances the customer experience.
Wildlife and Nature
One of the highlights of the cruises is the variety of wildlife; on any of the waterways it’s possible to spot dolphins and manatees as well as alligators in the upper reaches of the St. Lucie River. The area is home to migratory birds like swallow-tailed kites and roseate spoonbills, as well as native species such as bald eagles and wood storks. The cruises offer a unique opportunity to see these animals in their natural habitat, providing an educational and exciting experience for all ages.
Special Events and Seasonal Trips
Treasure Coast River Cruises also offers special event trips, such as Stuart Air Show viewing and fireworks cruises. These trips provide a unique vantage point for watching fireworks over the water, making them a popular choice for both locals and visitors.
Exploring Hidden Gems
The St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park is one of the hidden gems that Treasure Coast River Cruises brings to life. Located at the northern tip of Jupiter Island, this park is accessible only by boat. "It's been about four years in the making to get this trip coordinated with the state, and we're excited to finally offer it," says Caroline. The trip includes a 45-minute cruise to the park, a guided tour by a ranger, time on the beach, and a return cruise. Additionally, the public Port of St. Lucie Botanical Garden Cruise returns this fall.
Join the Adventure
For those looking to explore Stuart from the water, Treasure Coast River Cruises offers an unforgettable experience. Captain Bill and Caroline's passion for the area and commitment to their customers ensure that every trip is special. Stuart Marine Services
Ensuring Safe and Reliable Boating
In the scenic coastal town of Stuart, Florida, Kevin VanDecker has established Stuart Marine Services as a premier boat inspection and surveying company. With a steadfast commitment to ensuring the safety and reliability of both small and large watercraft, VanDecker and his team provide comprehensive boat inspections that give boat owners and buyers peace of mind.
INTRODUCING KEVIN VANDECKER AND STUART MARINE SERVICES
Kevin VanDecker, the owner of Stuart Marine Services, brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the marine industry. Located in Port Salerno, Stuart, his company specializes in small craft and yacht surveys. "We inspect boats to ensure they are safe and operating properly," says VanDecker, highlighting the meticulous approach his team takes in each inspection.
THE IMPORTANCE OF BOAT SURVEYS
A boat survey is akin to a home inspection, but conducted on the water. VanDecker emphasizes the necessity of hiring a boat inspector to examine areas that are not visible to the naked eye. "While a boat may look good above the water, it's crucial to inspect what's going on beneath the surface, in the areas you can't see," he explains. This comprehensive inspection process ensures that potential buyers and current owners are fully aware of the boat’s condition, preventing costly surprises down the line.
COMPREHENSIVE BOAT INSPECTIONS
Stuart Marine Services inspects a wide range of boats, from 16-foot runabouts to mega yachts. Whether it's a powerboat or a sailboat, VanDecker’s team leaves no stone unturned. "We inspect everything on the boat, from the fiberglass to the electronics," he states. The team checks for air voids, delaminated surfaces, soft spots, through-hulls, valves, seacocks, and hoses. Every system on the boat, including the electrical and electronic systems, is rigorously tested to ensure proper functionality.
DETAILED AND THOROUGH REPORTING
VanDecker prides himself on providing detailed and thorough reports. "We capture everything from model numbers to serial numbers and provide a very detailed report to the buyer," he notes. These reports are invaluable, especially for first-time boat buyers who may not be familiar with all the boat’s systems. VanDecker often educates buyers during the inspection process, pointing out important features and potential issues, thereby helping them understand and operate their new purchase safely.
PRE-INSPECTION RESEARCH AND PREPARATION
Before setting foot on a boat, VanDecker conducts extensive research. This includes checking the boat's
history for any insurance claims or Mayday calls. "We do a lot of preliminary research so we know what we're looking at before we arrive," he explains. This preparation allows him to approach each inspection with a clear understanding of the boat's background and potential problem areas.
IN-WATER AND OUT-OF-WATER INSPECTIONS
Stuart Marine Services offers both in-water and outof-water inspections. For boats on trailers or the hard, VanDecker uses specialized equipment to thoroughly inspect the hull and other components. For those unable to haul their boats out of the water, the team can perform inspections using a paddleboard to access and examine the bottom of the boat. "We offer this service to help customers who can't haul out their boats," VanDecker explains, ensuring that all boat owners have access to comprehensive inspections.
REAL-LIFE IMPACT: CASE STUDIES
VanDecker's inspections have often led to significant discoveries that save boat buyers substantial amounts of money. He recalls finding a 92-inch area of delamination on a 65-foot Sea Ray, which was subsequently covered under warranty thanks to his detailed report. "Our inspections can uncover major issues that would otherwise go unnoticed," he says, underscoring the importance of a professional survey.
POST-INSPECTION SUPPORT AND NEGOTIATION
Beyond inspections, Stuart Marine Services assists clients in renegotiating boat prices based on the findings. VanDecker explains, "A detailed survey report can be used to renegotiate the cost of the boat or to ensure necessary repairs are made." This service adds significant value for buyers, ensuring they make informed decisions and avoid potential pitfalls.
EDUCATING NEW BOAT OWNERS
VanDecker also takes the time to educate new boat owners. "We walk them through all the systems, showing them how to operate everything safely and securely," he says. This hands-on approach helps new owners feel confident and knowledgeable about their purchase, enhancing their overall boating experience.
CONCLUSION
Kevin VanDecker and Stuart Marine Services stand as pillars of reliability and thoroughness in the boat inspection industry. With a deep commitment to ensuring the safety and functionality of every boat they inspect, VanDecker's team provides invaluable services to the boating community in Stuart, Florida, and beyond. Whether you are a first-time buyer or a seasoned boat owner, Stuart Marine Services offers the expertise and dedication necessary to keep you safe on the water.
