From The Publisher Thank you for taking the time to review the 2010 Porsche Cayenne S hybrid edition of Automotive Street Style magazine. We are excited about all the new content offered in our media platform. In this issue of Automotive Street Style, we have made a conscious decision to continue to bring a diverse approach to our content layout. While living in Las Vegas I have the unique ability to report many of the Las Vegas happenings that may appeal to our national audience. This month we decided to contribute two Celebrity Garage articles instead of one. Our “Hot Shots” page is steadily becoming a reader favorite and USA Basketball deserved a little extra attention. At Automotive Street Style, we strive to present a magazine that will inform, inspire, educate and entertain our reader with our new format that includes articles about automobiles, style, culture and community. We have enjoyed producing this month’s magazine and hope you will enjoy spending time here with us. I invite you to return often to see what’s new, and write to us and give us your comments. We would love to hear from you. And always remember, life is as beautiful as you allow it to be! Take a moment to notice and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. Cheers!

What’s New: Stop & Stare « Kenwood Subwoofers Kenwood USA 1.800.KENWOOD | www.kenwoodusa.com We love the look of the new KFC-W3012. Kenwood’s engineers put a little more effort behind the improved cosmetic design, but more importantly, the woofer also has a shallower mounting depth and longer cone excursion. RMS power is rated at 400 watts with a max peak power of 1,200 watts. The woofer offers silver 8-gauge push-type input terminals, ideal for quick system hookup even with the use of a wider gauge speaker cable.

Nonetheless, we think this is a decent selling point, especially for an inexpensive unit.

STYLE
Top 5 Fashion Mistakes Simple Changes Correct The Mistakes Most Men Make According to Clinton Kelly
1. White Socks With Dress Shoes
Teaming white socks with dress shoes may have enjoyed brief popularity as a quirky style statement in the mid-’90s, but there’s a good reason this combo has failed to make a strong comeback. Dress shoes should only be worn with dress socks, which are wool or cotton socks in dark hues like black, blue, gray, and brown. White socks, in contrast, should be reserved solely for pairing with athletic shoes and track pants.
2. Buttoning Blazers Incorrectly
Even with a wellmade suit, fastening the wrong number of buttons on your blazer can cause it to pull and stretch in awkward directions, making it seem ill-fitting, so pay attention to the advice that follows. Doublebreasted jackets should nearly always be buttoned. With a two-button suit, fasten the top button and with a three-button suit, you have a choice between fastening the top two buttons or the middle one only. And no matter what kind of blazer you’re wearing, always unbutton it when you sit down.
8
3. Stuffed pockets
Your pants pockets are a place to put your hands, some spare change and perhaps a slim wallet. They are not a place to keep a bulky wallet filled with cash and two-monthold receipts, your cell phone, three sets of keys, and a stash of business cards. Bulging pockets detract from an otherwise streamlined look, so if you notice any square lumps in your pants, it’s a sure sign that it’s time to get a bag. An all-purpose bag that translates easily from work to play is a messenger. Briefcases for businessminded guys and carryalls for active men are additional options. At the very least, rather than stretch out your pants by filling your pockets to the max, you should consider donning a blazer with interior pockets to distribute your daily necessities over a larger area and maintain a sleek appearance.
4. Oversized clothes
One of the greatest male fashion fallacies is that loose clothing looks better than more fitted threads. The truth, however, is that even on larger men, body-skimming styles are more flattering. Of course,
“body-skimming” is not synonymous with “skin-tight.” What we’re referring to are clothes that glide comfortably over your body and show your physique to its best advantage. If you’re not sure whether you’re supersizing your clothes, try going one size down from what you normally wear next time you go shopping and compare the difference. You’ll know your clothes are too big if you have trouble discerning your body shape in them.
5. Socks with sandals
It’s shocking how many men persist in wearing socks with sandals despite how horrendous it looks. This monstrous fashion mistake could perhaps be forgiven if there were a practical purpose for pairing socks with sandals, but there isn’t any. If it’s cold enough to warrant wearing socks, then your feet will feel warmer in shoes. And at the beach, getting sand in your socks is simply uncomfortable. The point here is that if you’re guilty of committing this heinous fashion crime, do yourself and everyone else a favor and just stop.

COVER STORY
2011 Porsche
Cayenne S Hybrid
A Truly Electrifying Porsche By Lyndon Conrad Bell
Arguably the ride that saved the 911, Porsche’s Cayenne was introduced in 2003 as insurance against future downturns in sports car sales. Given Porsche’s largest market is the United States, when a hedge vehicle was planned, an SUV was selected as the ideal piece. Back in 2003, as you may recall, Americans were firmly in the grasp of SUV fever. Anybody building one pretty much had a license to print money.
14
Thus, Cayenne was born in that image and today is the company’s top selling vehicle––which it has been every year since it was introduced. Of course, things have changed somewhat since 2003––environmental concerns are more in the forefront and the memories of near five dollar a gallon gas haven’t quite faded. So now it’s time for the savior to come in a new flavor; witness Cayenne Hybrid.
In true Porsche fashion, the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid is capable of extraordinary feats of automotive prestidigitation. According to Porsche’s spokespeople, Cayenne Hybrid can run up to 86 miles per hour on electricity alone. Unlike most hybrids, the Porsche’s system is tuned to give more assist at highway speeds, as opposed to around town. A direct injected supercharged V6 pumping 333 horsepower through
Automotive Street Style | September 2010 | Cover Story: Porsche Cayenne Hybrid
an eight-speed automatic transmission is the primary power source. The engine is supplemented by a 47 horsepower electric motor. Using the quirky algorithm employed to determine the total output of a hybrid powertrain, this pencils out to 380 horsepower and an anticipated 24 miles per gallon for the Cayenne Hybrid. Rocking 427 ft-lbs of torque at 1000 rpm the Cayenne Hybrid is quick––0 to 60 happens in 6.1 seconds. Top speed is estimated at 150 miles per hour. A hydraulic clutch lives between the engine and the motor, allowing the engine to shut down when it isn’t needed. The battery pack resides in the well formerly occupied by the spare tire. Which, of course, means the Cayenne Hybrid gets run-flats. Nickel-metal-hydride cells store electricity and all the usual hybrid energy management stratagems are employed. The engine shuts down under light loads; the electric motor restarts the engine when it’s needed again. Braking produces regenerative energy, which is stored in the batteries as
electricity. On the road, all the goodness of the Cayenne shines right through. The vehicle retains its legendary balance, acceleration and agility. Porsche calls this concept Intelligent Performance and is employing it in an upcoming version of the Panamera sedan as well. Naturally, any technology that goes on a Porsche road car spends time on the track too. A 911 GT3 R Hybrid lead part of the 24 Hours of Nurburgring endurance event earlier this year. And plans abound in Stuttgart for the electrification of all of its legendary vehicles. This makes the Cayenne Hybrid the first of many truly electrifying Porsches.

NEWSWORTHY: DETROIT

he first thing Mark asked me when I stepped out of the glaring Detroit summer sun and into his yellow cab was whether I was in Detroit for the US Social Forum. I was, I told him. How was I finding the city? he wondered. Fine, I said, though I hadn’t really had much of a chance to explore the place that was being pegged as
16
the symbol of American economic decline. Mark, who asked that his last name not be used for personal privacy, laughed and offered me an exclusive tour of Detroit beyond the art nouveau sculptures and bright glass of the area surrounding the conference center. And with this came Mark’s story - as a former auto worker, as a Detroit native and
as a cab driver who has traversed the city’s streets. During the ride we chatted about the decline of the big three auto manufacturers that have left Detroit facing unemployment rates of 14.6 percent in May 2010 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and, at one point, leading the nation’s foreclosure rates. Mark said he estimates
Automotive Automotive Street Street Style Style || September September 2010 2010 || Marketplace Newsworthy
the actual unemployment rate, which does not count part-time workers looking for full-time jobs or frustrated job seekers who have abandoned their job search altogether, to be approaching 50 percent, particularly in the AfricanAmerican community. Many of those now unemployed, he noted, had not gotten college
degrees because they thought there was the guarantee of a steady job with an auto company or one of the multiple parts contractors waiting for them. Mark, a skilled worker who had graduated with a BA in political science, has not found the job climate hospitable since he took early retirement two years ago. www.automotivestreetstyle.com www.automotivestreetstyle.com
Mark’s hope is for green jobs to rejuvenate Detroit and cities like it around the country. He doesn’t know when this could happen or if it is even realistic, but he also has no plans to move his five kids - two of whom are in college and three still finishing high school out of the city in which he was born and raised.

ake Tahoe – the large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada of the United States. At a surface elevation of 6,225 ft, this beautiful lake with its clear emerald waters is located along the border between California and Nevada, west of Carson City, Nevada. Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America. Its depth is 1,645 feet making it America’s second-deepest (the deepest is Crater Lake in Oregon, at 1,945 feet deep). The lake is believed to have been formed about 2 million years ago and is a part of the Lake Tahoe Basin with the modern lake being shaped during the ice ages. It is known for the clarity of its water, its breathtakingly beautiful beaches and the panorama of the surrounding mountains on all sides. The area around the lake is also referred to as Lake Tahoe, or simply Tahoe by the locals. Lake Tahoe is a major tourist attraction for California and Nevada. In the winter, Tahoe becomes a “winter wonderland” and is home
18
to a number of “world class” ski resorts open for skiing, snowboarding or just plain ole’ snow ball throwing. In the summer, there is outdoor recreation that provides the best in water sports, hiking and mountain biking for the perfect summer vacation. The mountain and lake scenery are beautiful attractions that take your breath away throughout the year. On the Nevada side you will find many large casinos where you can indulge yourself in the exciting nightlife that includes non-stop gaming and live entertainment. The highways into Tahoe provide year-round access from Reno, Carson City and Sacramento.
Things To Do…
Take a boat ride over to Emerald Bay. Emerald Bay provided the setting for one of the first summer homes at Lake Tahoe. Emerald Bay includes the only island (Fanette Island) in Lake Tahoe and the only water fall (Eagle Falls) that flows directly into the Lake. Magnificent cedars and pines set off by shear granite cliffs make this one of the most scenic
areas in the entire United States. Vikingsholm, a stunning mansion built on the shore of the Bay in 1929 is considered to be one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture existing in the United States. For tour information, visit www.vikingsholm.org. Take a Heavenly Gondola ride to Heavenly Valley. “You’ll think you’ve died and gone to…”well, anyway, “the views from a Heavenly Gondola are truly awe–inspiring.” Heavenly Gondola transports you in an eight–passenger cabin 2.4 miles up the mountain in 12 minutes, all the while offering up eye– catching views of Lake Tahoe. Sightseers can keep the excitement going by paying a visit to Adventure Peak, the last stop on the gondola before returning to lake level and the Heavenly Village. hen Helen H. thought of throwing her husband a fiftieth birthday party, she knew exactly what his gift would be. For almost three decades she had heard countless stories from her husband about his longtime dream of owning a high performance sports car, specifically a Porsche 911 convertible. Her plan was to get a better than used car and fix it up. “My husband kept telling me that after he got his Porsche it would be a dream come true and everyone better be calling 911, so I had his license plates personalized” Helen said. She also knew her friends at AS2

would help take this car from zing to bling. · Continuing 911 tradition, the “flat” (horizontally opposed) six-cylinder engine was mounted in the rear, but it underwent considerable change. In addition to switching from air cooling to water cooling, the engine had dual-overhead cams rather than a singlecam configuration, with four valves per cylinder instead of two. Essentially, it was a 3.4-liter version of the engine used in the smaller
Boxster, producing 296 horsepower-more than the prior 3.6-liter. Considered the “classic” Porsche, the 911 Carrera first came in 2 2 coupe form with rear-wheel drive. Cabriolet convertibles and Carrera 4 models (with all-wheel drive) joined later. A six-speed manual transmission was standard.

WORDS OF WISDOM
The golden rule is endorsed by all the great world religions; Jesus, Hillel, and Confucius used it to summarize their ethical teachings. And for many centuries the idea has been influential among people of very diverse cultures. These facts suggest that the golden rule may be an important moral truth. In the Bible, The Parable of the Good Samaritan illustrates the Golden Rule. The Golden Rule or ethic of reciprocity is an ethical code, or a morality, that states; One should treat others according to how one would like others to treat them.
1. Treat others as you would like to be treated (positive, active form) 2. One should not treat others in ways one would not like to be treated (prohibitive, passive form) 3. Do not treat others in ways you would not like to be treated (prohibitive, active form. Also called the Silver Rule) The Golden Rule has a long history, and a great number of prominent religious figures and philosophers have restated the above four forms of the Rule in various ways.

The Golden Rule is arguably the most essential basis for the modern concept of human rights, in which each individual has a right to just treatment, and a responsibility to ensure justice for others. A key element of the Golden Rule is that a person attempting to live by this rule treats all people, not just members of his or her in-group, with consideration. The Golden Rule has its roots in a wide range of world cultures, and is a standard which different cultures use to resolve conflicts. The Golden Rule has a history that long predates the term “Golden Rule” (or “Golden law,” as it was called from the 1670s). It was present in certain forms in the philosophies of ancient Babylon, Egypt, India, Greece, Judea, and China. Principal philosophers and religious figures have stated it in different ways, but its most common English phrasing first appeared in a Catholic catechism around 1567 (certainly in the reprint of 1583): That English phrasing is a translation of ancient Greek manuscripts; and in the original Greek it is attributed to Jesus of Nazareth in the Biblical book of Matthew: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” (Matthew 7:12, Matthew 22:39, Luke 6:31) Improve the quality of your life as well as the lives of those around you by following these “Words of Wisdom”.
