Right Decision in 1994 – KB’s R&D is a Success Story` Evaluation of the Actual Status – The R&D Institute became an integral part of the KB world-wide R&D organization, and handled as one of the most flexible and dynamic unit – The engineering activities in Budapest are fully accepted in the organization – The efficiency of the engineering work is on the same level as anywhere in the company – at lower cost, with much higher organizational flexibility – The cultural issues, which raised some problems at the beginning have disappeared – The Institute became a company wide R&D service organization – Fully embedded in the Hungarian research and development community through our intensive co-operation with the local universities, institutes, suppliers. – Based on our experience in this field, several persons of the KB’s R&D management play 8 important social roles in the Hungarian R&D community 8

The best form of co-operation is the research consortium with the characteristics: – Each participant contracts the supporting organization directly – Rules of co-operation, control of IP rights is described in consortium agreement – The partner follow same rules and principles regardless of their type (university, industrial partner) – Defined and practiced project control, primarily (but not exclusively) lead by the industry partner Impact: – Valuable, more practice relevant results from the university side – Consequent know-how transfer among the participants – Leading (coordinating) role of the industry partner results in better understanding of the requirements set by larger companies for SMEs 13 and universities

Giving Organizational Frame to the Co-operation Engineering Promotion Program leads to joint laboratory •

A new program was initiated in order to relief the capacity situation in the pre-development and provide trained and already experienced manpower for complex engineering programs The program is based on university resources (mostly PhD and higher level graduate students, and some selected graduate students), with the following characteristics: – The topics will be defined (practice relevant research themes), tracked and managed by KB, – Complete financing is provided by KB for the research, more support for the practical realizations, – The individuals, proving their capabilities will have the opportunity to continue their carrier at KB after receiving their PhD degree (or even before) – The program provides a direct link to external knowledge and resources 17

Primarily pre-development and research projects are subsidized when university is involved • People are employees of the university for a certain time period • Subsidy provides full coverage of the personal costs of the 34,5 people in 2010 Impact: • The university have access to highly qualified people from the industry for a certain time at no cost • The company does not loos this persons, but can re-hire them when the situation becomes stable again
