TREE HOUSE

A RESIDENTIAL HOUSE DESIGN FOR SINGLE FAMILY LIVING

SITE

Yim Tin Tsai Village, Sai Kung, Hong Kong

BREIF To shape a 343 cubic meter experimental house for single-family living

RESIDENTIAL PROJECT

FORM STUDY

Many residential house in Europe has pitched roof. Its design can allow more sunlight to get into the interior. Also, it has many ability to create unique shape. TRAPEZIUM SHAPE

Trapezium shape is special and full of ability. Its geometric shape inspried me a lot.

I am trying to shape a house by using trapezium element, such as slanting roof and wall. As my housing type is tree house, it is more unique and natural comparing to those in Hong Kong. That’s why I want to allow more natural lighting go into the interior by using glass material and slanting roof. People can feel more closely to and live with the nature. -8-

TESTING MODEL First, I try to make the roof more slanted, so it can allow more sunlight to get in. However, the lower angle of the slanting roof can save more useful spaces, therefore, higher the spatial quality.

1 No outdoor space

2 Transition outdoor area

Tree House has more advantages over the other country houses in getting touch with nature. I reckon I should make good use of this point and give out more outdoor space. The outdoor platfrom is not only use for transition but also a place to relax and gathering. The lifestyle of the user may affect by the spactial planning, more outdoor area allow user to walk outside of her at and stay close to nature. It is a great idea to those who are under pressure and stress -- take a time to be calm and enjoy living at the moment!

I draw some sketches of the site to let me understand more about the surrounding. The tree house is facing to North, the sunrise on the left hand side of it. There will be quite hot as it always has sunlight get inside. In addition, the house is facing the salf fram and trees. It is a good view to build a balcony facing to North. Also, it can use to block the sunlight get into the house directly.

USER Aubrey

USER & SPACE

As I love living with nature, more windows can allow nature lighting to get in. Also, using wooden materials can create a harmony atmosphere, such like being in nature. Moreover, having a balcony allow me to go outside and enjoy fresh air. In addition, I love art and design so that I would like to have a studio at home. Also, I love being with friends, so the outdoor area and the open kitchen can allow me to gather with friends.

GRAND LOBBY

MORSE CODE REPLICATION A GRAND LOBBY DESIGN FOR HONG KONG FILM ARCHIVE

SITE

50 Lei King Road, Sai Wan Ho, Hong Kong

BREIF To identify the existing conditions of HKFA lobby and make a design proposal with a sustainable focus

COMMERCIAL DESIGN PROJECT

- 15 -

PROBLEM DEFINITION

This project is to identify research and survey the existing conditions of the HKFA project area and make a design proposal with a sustainable focus. In this regard, the project based on this three focus points: SPACIAL PROBLEM Improve the spacial arrangement in the ground lobby

PROVIDE SERVICES Provide services for industry people and general public

ATTRACT TEENS Encourage teens to learn more about Hong Kong movie

BECOME WORLD-CLASS To be a world-class film archive to conserve local film heritage

First of all, the exisit problem of HKFA is the site location. As Sai Wan Ho is an old district which surrounded by residential building, and most of the resident are olderly. It is not a common district that general public will come arross. Moreover, the spacial planning is so messy. There has no circulation to lead way for visitors. Also, the information counter has combined with the security and it is too pack. On the top of that, there is a problem of the unclear signage. They are hidden behind the information counter, too small for read and not eye catching enough. Lastly, the program of the film archive are not balance. The service and archive parts are like 30% and 70%, and the arrangement of program cause the spacial problems. exsiting plan

- 16 -

Therefore, to solve the spacial problems, the design should have clear zoning and structured circulation. It should integrate different functions in a zone to create cohesion. In order to make a circulation, signage is very important. So, the signage in lobby should be eye catching and able to lead the route.Besides, the program should balance the service and research parts. Therefore, they can be order into both 50% service and 50% archive.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Features of Hong Kong

WHAT IS MOVIE? In my point of view, movie is the copy of our daily life, more exactly; it reflects the culture of the place we are living in.Of couse, movie has many categories and it transmit different messages. However, it always contains hidden messages to educate or inform the audience. The main category of Hong Kong movie is action film, which includes Crime films, Kung Fu movies, Gangster films and Superhero. The features of these movie are the overlayed identities in movie and the repeated stories layout. Also, they have many copies of season based on one film. Moreover, the movie poster designs of Hong Kong Crime film just like copy and paste.

MORSE CODE REPLICATION The lines and dots with replication create density and rthythm, which are like morse code. As I have mentioned, movie carries out hidden messages that morse code does. Therefore, i use morse code as my design concept. I apply the design elements like density, repeated patterns , replication, dots and lines into my design. Here are the different combination of using dots and lines, I use these features to create a oor pattern in the cafe.
