Stage 5 Speculate Spatial Relationship/Event
Intention: To learn to speculate a spatial argument through drawings and models.
Sketches of Cities & Eyes 1 - Valdrada After selecting Valdrada as the topic, I tried to draw some sketches and imagine how the city looks like in reality. The sketches show the elements I use in Valdrada, which lines, dots and form are reflected and repeated, as well as positive and negative space are created in a same space.
Constructing a plaster model city According to the keywords and sketches of Valdrada - Cities & Eyes1, we started t o vi su al i z e th e city by using the elements from t h e b o o k.
REFLECTED CITY
REFLECTED CITY
The map shows the plan of my imagine city of Valdrada. There are positive and negative space in the map. However, the map are too random and do not under control.
The sketches show my development of exploring the spatial arugement, designing the module.
After that, we use foam to make development model, we think of a good way to make mass production. As we already have the form, we just cut out the negative part from the cube. We have five modules and each module has seven pieces.
SPATIAL SYSTEM The spatial system is studied under a 4x4x4 grid system. The study focus on the relationship between column, wall, ceiling and beam.
wall
ceiling
enclosed beams
enclosed column
The above spatial conditions are avoided in the module since they are over defining an interior space.
FINAL MODULES
The forms are generated by playing with column and beam(ceiling). They are all made under a 4x4x4 grid system to advance interlocking. Closed loop are prevented in the design which may over-define interior space. The lower 5 modules in the photo is the negative space of the upper 5. They are not efficient in presenting the theme. However, it may be interesting to have them in the city as a visual weight.
Development model
The series of studies from most enclosed to completely open and some scaled development modules.

Mapping Yau Ma Tei in 1:50
To learn to draw space in time and motion.
In stage 2, we went to site visit in Yau Ma Tei, doing observation, drawing sketches and recording photos. I found many in-between spatial quality in Yau Ma Tei, in between the street and the store. Finally, I put all these spaces into my 1:50 drawings of section and plan, with explaination and exploration.
Selected site in Yau Ma Dei
1 大家食 - Arthur street
3 Clothes Store - Hi Lung Lane
2 R.K. Store - Hi Lung Lane 5 恆豐辨館 - Wing Sing Lane
6 Display of furniture shop - Shanghai Street 8 Warung Susi store - Canton Road
Site 1 - 大家食 / Arthur street
PLAN VIEW
THERE ARE DINING AREA PLACED OUTSIDE THE RESTAURANT. PEOPLE WALK BY THE STREET, THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE DINING AREA IS CLOSE.
SECTION
THE SPACE IN BETWEEN THE ROAD AND PAVEMENT ARE LIMITED, SOME PEOPLE FORCE TO WALK DOWN A LEVEL TO THE ROAD. SOME PEOPLE SHARE THE PAVEMENT WITH DINING PEOPLE.
THE SPACE BETWEEN OUTDOOR DINING AND INDOOR IS SEPARATED BY A WALL.
Site 2 - R.K. Store / Hi Lung Lane
PLAN VIEW
THERE ARE TABERNACLES BETWEEN THE R.K. STORE AND THE NEARBY BUILDING, WHICH CREATE A SEMI OPEN SPACE.

THERE ARE TABERNACLES BETWEEN THE R.K. STORE AND THE NEARBY BUILDING, WHICH CREATE A SEMI OPEN SPACE. PEOPLE SIT IN BETWEEN THE BACK ALLEYS AND STORE, OPEN TO PUBLIC.
THE TABERNACLE EXTENDS TO THE STREET, CREATING A COVER FOR THE PEDESTRAIN. ALSO, THE STORE OCCUPIES THE BACK ALLEYS.
Site 3 - Clothes Store / Hi Lung Lane
SECTION
THE CLOTHES DISPLAY ON THE WALL, OCCUPYING THE BUILDING SURFACE AND THE STREET. THE CLOTHES CREATE LEVELING AND LAYERING, PEOPLE CAN CHOOSE THE GOODS BY STANDING ON THE STREET.

Site 5 - 恆豐辨館 / Wing Sing Lane
SECTION
THE DEPTH OF THE STORE IS LOW. THE STORE KEEPER OCCUPIES THE STREET WITH HIS GOODS. THE STORE IS SEMI-OPEN, LIKE THE PART OF THE STREET.

Site 6 - Display of furniture shop / Shanghai Street
SECTION
THE DISPLAY AREA OCCUPIES THE ENTRANCE OF THE BUILDING, LIKE AN EXHIBITION TO THE STREET. PEOPLE CAN LOOK CLOSER TO SELECT THE GOODS FROM THE DISPLAY.
Site 8 - Warung Susi store / Canton Road
SECTION
THE CUPBOARD AND REFRIGERATOR CREATE DIFFERENT LEVELING IN THE FACADE, THAT PEOPLE WILL FEEL FREE TO GET IN.
SECTION
THE LEVELING OF THE ENTRANCE LEADS PEOPLE TO GET INSIDE THE STORE. THE IN-BETWEEN SPACE OF THE STORE AND STREET ALLOWS PEOPLE TO STAY LONGER.
Experimental space of In-between
This drawing explores the in-between quality of space. My aim is allowing people to feel free in the space, by leading them walk in and out continuously.
Base on the extaction, I create another collage which could present the in-between quality of space.
Rationalize the collage
USING COLUMNS AND THIN WALL TO CONNECT WALL AND CEILING, INSTEAD OF THICK WALL.
HIGH CEILING ALLOWS MORE NATURE LIGHTING TO GET INSIDE, ALSO WITH GOOD AND FRESH VENTILATION.

04
Developing Spatial detail To learn to materialize spatial idea.
I went to record some materials from Yau Ma Tei, and tried to put them into my drawing.
PHYSICALITY AND MATERIALITY - 1 to 1 material exploration
Continuously adding more layers and framing.
Material exploration from collage
This is the entrance leads people walk into my space, I try to add material on it. And it creates another feeling - incompleteness, fragmented.
I try to draw the details in the entrance, the fragmented materials and solid block create the sense of incompleteness. When people go inside it, they do not able to identify whether they are in side or outside.
I start drawing the details in some part of my collage. Also, I reference it from the 1 to 1 material exploration model.
Studies of wooden framing and thershold detailing
Concrete casting for 1 to 1
05
Speculate Spatial Relationship/ Event To learn to speculate a spatial argument through drawings and models.
Afther drawing the section by hand, I try to make a cad version and turn it to 3D model.
