CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL CHICAGO Located a block off of the Magnificent Mile and a block from Lake Michigan , the site over looks the Museum of contemporary art and an adjacent park. The hospital design utilizes shared spaces and views of Lake Michigan to encourage healing and community within the hospital. The patient rooms are on the north western facade overlooking the park and
lake. The green space from the park moves up the building into green roofs that double as play grounds. The hospital holds the urban edge acting as a beacon terminating the end of Meis Van Der Rohe Way. The children’s rooms connect with shared and private balconies and the halls undulate to reveal play spaces. The south eastern core of the building is reserved for medical exam and procedural spaces.

“ I go to Nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in tune once more.” - John Burroughs Each room has both a personal and shared balcony to encourage neighborly interaction, while allowing for private family spaces as well. The halls of the hospital billow creating alcoves of play spaces to encourage floor interaction. The hospital features two large play grounds which occupy the lower roof tops of the emergency department and lobby.

Each Floor has a dedicated family space for visitors that looks out over the park toward the lake.
Floors have a centralized nurse’s station and waiting area to optimize floor control and allow view to each patient room
The halls undulate, creating spaces for children on the floor to congregate. These spaces utilize cork and chalk boards to engage the children and encourage creativity.
Each room has two shared balcony spaces to allow an extra play space among neighbors.
Each room features an attached modern nurse’s work station to minimize paperwork, file mix ups, as well as allow for discrete checkups.
A built in bunkett accommodates overnight visits and doubles as toy storage. Each room centers around family and making kids feel at home.

ROSE LEE’S HOUSE: DESIGN BUILD FOOTWASH A 16 student studio in Newbern, AL. The house was designed for Rose Lee Turner and her two sons in rural Alabama. The house was built as a core with expansion, in an effort to keep her existing house for as long as possible. Once the core was completed the existing home was demolished and construction on the expansion began. We designed a courtyard house to vary Rose’s degree of privacy and a large front porch to encourage large neighborhood gathering. In addition to taking part in the overall design of the home, I led the material design and acquisitions, and was a member of the roof team.

NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM MONTGOMERY Project lies on the banks of the Alabama-Coosa River in downtown Montgomery, AL. The proposal is part of a greater master plan to revitalize downtown and features a river walk connecting a series of destinations. The proposed Natural History Museum features gallery spaces, lecture halls, gift shop/ restaurant and an aquarium in approximately 8,500 sq feet and spanning a 30 foot bluff to the river.
The project uses glue laminated beams to bridge the bluff and a cantilevering truss system to embrace the river’s edge and blur the lines between shore and the river. The curves reflect the flow of the river and the plan pushes and pulls like the tides and the rhythm of the railroad.

Like many of the larger southern cities, it has been in decline since the mid 1900’s. The abandoned river front had once been the site of industry. As part of a revitalization master plan, Montgomery is reclaiming the river as a place to connect and explore the outdoors. After exploring the site, I developed a plan that pulled from the natural environment and capitalized on the 30 foot bluff to frame views and protect the site from flooding. Circulation happens around the masses with glazing on both sides to carry day lighting into the interior spaces. This also exposes the structural truss system which allows the building to jut over the riverbed. The roofing system demonstrates a hierarchy of spaces and highlights destinations within the building.

BREW HAUS BIRMINGHAM Our site is situated on an abandoned site in the heart of downtown Birmingham, Alabama. During initial analysis I determined the city was lacking low cost accommodations. I designed a brewery and hostel to explore the opportunities for intersection and interactions between these programs. Each complement the area’s emerging beer culture and create a node on the emerging trail system.
I explored the intersections and linkages of spaces, people, and program within the spaces during a 6 week cherrett project.
The site is in the heart of the historical railroad district where the city first grew up; as well as located in the intersection of the city’s new park and trail system, which is bringing a renewed life to the city.

The Programs intersect creating new ways for visitors to engage and allow for chance encounters. The intersection of brewery and hostel creates a common area/ game room that can be enjoyed by both user groups. The Bakery and Tasting room share a courtyard and amphitheater space on the exterior that pulls green space from Line Park.
The concept of intersection is continued in the material selection and how they meet and interact. The heavy masses are clad in a corten mesh that becomes more translucent in zones of high activity with glazing behind it enclosing the structure and creating a thick wall system. In opposition the glass bar exposing its structural truss system is pushed through the heavy boxes.

SMALL TOWN INITIATIVE CLAY COUNTY Clay County is a poised to be a gateway to Alabama outdoor recreation. Located halfway between Atlanta and Birmingham and nested in the foothills of the Appalachians. It is home to scenic views, trails, and the highest point in Alabama, Mt. Cheaha. Using assets based planning we focused on Ashland, Lineville, and the section of Highway 9 that connects the two. We focused on leveraging the proximity to destinations and directing growth to maintain the small town character of the area, while stimulating the economy.

Development Concepts: - Preserve, protect, and promote small town and rural character and attributes -Capture the potential of economies that reinforce your opportunities of place: Agri-centric businesses and services -Become the “trail head for regional recreation and tourism - Create places to come together in the heart of the downtowns - Be a leader in local and regional cooperation
SMALL TOWN INITIATIVE CLAY COUNTY |27
Highway 9 Development Ashland and Lineville are 5 miles apart along the Hwy 9 corridor. Included along the corridor are several regional assets: the new Clay County High School, the County Airport, and the regional livestock sale barn. We have advised against the continued development along Hwy 9 and suggest ed instead that commercial development be rerouted to the downtowns. Preserving the rural character and mitigating strip develop-
ment. Instead build responsible development that reinforces the agrarian sense along Hwy 9 that results in the protection of the corridor. I developed several types of development that would build tourism and recreational economy. An equestrian community that would encompass residential developments with equine support facilities; for horse lovers who don’t want the acreage, equestrian, primitive, and RV camping facilities along crooked creek, and a regional livestock showing and rodeo arena.

BIRD + HOUSE SPARROW A 3 part project first semester of first year. We built a bird house, then wrote a paper on an assigned bird species. Next we reinvented the traditional bird house to encompass the traits our particular bird with the craft of our first bird house. The Sparrow is a modest protective bird. They don’t possess the showy colors of many tropical species. Everything they do is to protect the nest, except when they sing. They will perch high in the branches and share their song for no particular reason with anyone willing to listen. These are the traits revealed within the sparrow + house.

PARK PLACE : MULTI-FAMILY HOUSING The new Railroad Park has reactivated the south side of the downtown corridor and energized development. Working under an architect at Giattina Aycock Studio, on a multifamily apartment complex with retail and club room on the street level. I worked on the development of options for a standard corner unit plan in the 21 standard unit complex I also took the lead on the design for the pool plan, garden terrace, and club room amenity spaces for the project.

CHILDREN’S OF ALABAMA: HOSPITAL ADAPTIVE REUSE During the 25 year long relationship with Children’s of Alabama GA has positioned itself as project architect for the hospital. After the construction of a new expansion building they are looking to optimize the space in their existing facility. Working under an architect I took as built measurements for a adaptive reuse of an occupied space. The department was hiring more people so needed to re format the space for the best use. Then laid out space for the proposed renovation.
