BREW HAUS BIRMINGHAM, AL Role/Responsibility- Designer/Student Our site is situated on an abandoned site in the heart of downtown Birmingham, Alabama. During initial analysis I determined the city was lacking low cost accommodations. I designed a brewery and hostel to explore the opportunities for intersection and interactions between these programs. Each complement the area’s emerging beer culture and creates a node on the emerging trail system. The site is in the heart of the historical railroad district and located in the intersection of the city’s new park and trail system. This site is the epicenter of both the birth of the city along the tracks and the site of renewal as the trains draw new inhabitants and tourist alike back into the center of the city. I explored the intersections and linkages of spaces, people, and program within the spaces during a 6 week cherrett design project.

URBAN STUDIO SMALL TOWN INITIATIVE CLAY COUNTY, AL Role/Responsibility- Team member Student/Designer Urban Studio works with communities to supply them with a long and short term plan and the resources to apply for grants for implementing the plans. Clay County is a poised to be a gateway to Alabama outdoor recreation. Located between Atlanta and Birmingham and nested in the foothills of the Appalachians. It is home to scenic views, trails, and the highest point in Alabama, Mt. Cheaha. Using assets based planning the team focused on Ashland, Lineville, and the section of Highway 9 that connects the two. Working with the community through town meetings, we focused on leveraging the proximity to destinations and directing growth to maintain the small town character of the area, while stimulating the economy. URBAN STUDIO |14

Development Concepts: - Preserve, protect, and promote small town and rural character and attributes -Capture the potential of economies that reinforce your opportunities of place: Agri-centric businesses and services -Become the “trail head for regional recreation and tourism - Create places to come together in the heart of the downtowns - Be a leader in local and regional cooperation

Highway 9 Development Ashland and Lineville are 5 miles apart along the Hwy 9 corridor. Included along the corridor are several regional assets: the new Clay County High School, the County Airport, and the regional livestock sale barn. We have advised against the continued development along Hwy 9 and suggest ed instead that commercial development be rerouted to the downtowns. Preserving the rural character and mitigating strip development. Instead build responsible development that reinforces the agrarian sense along Hwy 9 that results in the protection of the corridor. I developed several types of development that would build tourism and recreational economy. An equestrian community that would encompass residential developments with equine support facilities; for horse lovers who don’t want the acreage, equestrian, primitive, and RV camping facilities along crooked creek, and a regional livestock showing and rodeo arena.

CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL CHICAGO, IL Role/Responsibility- Designer/Student Located a block off of the Magnificent Mile and a block from Lake Michigan , the site over looks the Museum of contemporary art and an adjacent park. The hospital design utilizes shared spaces and views of Lake Michigan to encourage healing and community within the hospital. The patient rooms are on the north western facade overlooking the park and lake. The green space from the park moves up the building into green roofs that double as play grounds. The hospital holds the urban edge acting as a beacon terminating the end of Meis Van Der Rohe Way. The children’s rooms connect with shared and private balconies and the halls undulate to reveal play spaces. The south eastern core of the building is reserved for medical exam and procedural spaces.

Each Floor has a dedicated family space for visitors that looks out over the park toward the lake.
Floors have a centralized nurse’s station and waiting area to optimize floor control and allow view to each patient room
The halls undulate, creating spaces for children on the floor to congregate. These spaces utilize cork and chalk boards to engage the children and encourage creativity.
Each room has two shared balcony spaces to allow an extra play space among neighbors.
A built in bunkett accommodates overnight visits and doubles as toy storage. Each room centers around family and making kids feel at home.
Each room features an attached modern nurse’s work station to minimize paperwork, file mix ups, as well as allow for discrete checkups.

ROSE LEE’S HOUSE: DESIGN BUILD FOOTWASH Role/Responsibility- Lead Material Aquisition,
Roof-Team Member, Cladding Lead A 16 student studio in Newbern, AL. The house was designed for Rose Lee Turner and her two sons in rural Alabama. The house was built as a core with expansion, in an effort to keep her existing house for as long as possible. Creating a flexible home reflecting the transient nature of modern society. Once the core was completed the existing home was demolished and construction on the expansion began. We designed an expandable courtyard house to vary Rose’s degree of privacy and a large front porch to encourage large neighborhood gathering. In addition to taking part in the overall design of the home, I led the material design and acquisitions, and was a member of the roof team. Using resources available, we dismantled a local barn using the salvaged heart pine to create the four roof trusses and to wrap the interior walls. RURAL STUDIO |28

BIRD + HOUSE : SPARROW Role/Responsibility- Student/Designer A 3 part project, we built a bird house, wrote a paper on species of bird, and then reinvented the traditional bird house to encompass the traits our bird with the craft and materiality of the first bird house. The Sparrow is a modest protective bird. They don’t possess the showy colors or an extravagant nest. Everything they do is to protect the nest, except when they sing. They will perch high in the branches and share their song for no determined reason with anyone willing to listen.

RESEARCH LITEE Case Study Worked in Chennia India with Larsen and Toubro to develop a tool for quickly analyzing thermal comfort of apartments in the design phase. Utilizing Ecotect and historical weather data, the thermal comfort levels were taken from 4 different layout configurations.
Role/Responsibility- Student/ Thermal Comfort Teammember Each layout consisted of different glazing exposures and building materials. The orientation of each layout plan was then rotated so the exposures would face either north, south, east, or west. The tool would suggest occupancy times and how to improve
thermal comfort. CITY COMPARISON

Role/Responsibility- Graphics/ Research team data for the dashboards. Designed iconography and infographics, and completed the dashboards.
COMPETITIONS Role/Responsibility- Student/ Designer A competition to design a new mounds to spatially define the park adjacent to the award spaces; reflecting the raised winning railroad park. The railroad that cuts through the design was to complement city and the mountains that the existing park; continuing characterize its edge. With its momentum within the city. 3 defined spacial uses, but It seeks to intertwine play without edged allowing for spaces, market spaces, and unlimited potential for the serenity within the city. Using discovery of new spaces.

Park Place Giattina Aycock Studio
Role/Responsibility- Jr. Designer
The new Railroad Park has reactivated the south side of the downtown corridor. I worked under an architect at Giattina Aycock Studio, on a multifamily apartment complex with retail and club room on the street level.
Developed options for a standard corner unit plan in the 21 standard unit complex I also took the lead on the design for the pool plan, garden terrace, and club room amenity spaces for the project.

During a 25 year long relationship GA Studio has positioned itself as the hospital’s project architect. After the construction of a new expansion building CoA is looking to optimize the space in their existing facility.
Working under an architect I took as built measurements for a adaptive reuse of an occupied space. Then laid out space for the proposed renovation.

Efficiency is crucial to most industries; healthcare and construction aren’t exceptions. The 32 doctors of CVA knew they could gain efficiency by consolidation.. They did not know that by applying
lean operations principles it would enable them to build fewer square feet with better patient throughput. I did a post occupancy analysis to understand the success/ failure of the design.
