My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult The unique collaboration that is My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult started in 1987 when Groovie Mann (Franke Nardiello) and Buzz McCoy (Marston Daley) came together to make an art film of the same name. The movie didn’t work out but the resulting band ended up being an early (and important) act for indie label Wax Trax! Records. Over the last twenty plus years they’ve made their unique sounding electronic dance music that pulls from industrial, disco, and funk and flirts playfully with B-Movie and satanic themes. They’ve recently released their new album The House of Strange Affairs and are planning a supporting tour. We were lucky enough to have Buzz McCoy himself answer a few questions. Let’s start at the beginning. How did you and Franke meet and why did you guys hit it off? You two have been making music together since 1987. What do you think is so successful about your creative relationship? Buzz McCoy : Franke and I met in ’86 when Ministry’s Twitch tour came [through] AUXILIARY summer 2019

Boston. He was working lights/production for the tour. The band had a night off before the show and I took Paul Barker (who I knew from the early 80s Boston music scene when he was in a band called Blackouts and I in a band called Zero Zero) and a few other folks out for Thai food. Franke was one of those people, and 22

Bone & Busk The brand formerly known as Totally Waisted evolved into high-end couture but never lost its goth touch. In September 2018, Bone & Busk moved into Parkdale, a Toronto neighborhood that feels like Queen Street West used to.

The corset is the Holy Grail of goth fashion and a staple of cosplay and dressmaking in general. Bone & Busk is here to supply this vital thing as well as crowns, bridal couture, jackets and other ready-to-wear items from a cozy shop in Parkdale, Toronto. It’s no surprise that Parkdale would get a versatile haute couture and goth fashion retail combo when gentrification displaced many such shops away from Queen Street west of Spadina, where you might have expected to see them in the 90s. Indeed, gentrification didn’t just make Parkdale a better place for this shop; gentrification took down the original studio out of which this brand once worked, a shared Akin Collective artists’ space. About fifteen years ago, you might have seen Kate Mior’s work being traded as Totally Waisted, as she explains: “I was a new designer, I was making lower end product you know, and had a different, I mean it was a very similar aesthetic but definitely different quality level and different target demographic.” It turned out another company was quicker to trademarking the name, but by that point, her work was evolving to the next level: “I also was kind of not married to the name anymore because at that AUXILIARY summer 2019

point I was already doing higher end trade shows and higher end product to go along with it.” The selection of the new name was a fruitful crowd sourced effort. “What I really like about the name is it does two things, it’s a sleek streamlined name, but it also references back to my previous career which was as a street performer, which a lot of people would vernacularly call us buskers.” The names of products themselves is not crowd sourced, but certainly meaningful. “The kimono is actually named after my friend Samar who is the first Tunisian to get a PhD at Cambridge University in England, she’s a good friend of mine. The Brooke dress is named after one of my favorite models Brooke, and all the coats are actually named after famous people from history, so our signature coat the Wilde coat is obviously named after Oscar Wilde; we have a Franz coat named after Franz Liszt, a Frederic coat named after Frederic Chopin, so you know my naming is all over the place.” Finding a customer demand balance is important, because Bone & Busk is not
